Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is an aggressive malignancy originating from the parafollicular C cells. Preoperatively, thyroid nodule fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and pathogenic gene mutations are definitive in approximately one-half of cases. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous, noncoding, single-stranded RNAs that regulate gene expression, a characteristic that confers the potential for identifying malignancy. In the current study, the authors hypothesized that differential pairwise (diff-pair) analysis of miRNA expression levels would reliably identify ****in FNA samples.
The relative abundance of 10 different miRNAs in total nucleic acids was obtained from ThyraMIR test results. Diff-pair analysis was performed by subtracting the critical threshold value of one miRNA from the critical threshold values of other miRNAs. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that the effectiveness of intensive treatment for locoregionally advanced head and neck cancer (LAHNC) depends on the proportion of patients' overall event risk attributable to cancer.
This study analyzed 22,339 patients with LAHNC treated in 81 randomized trials testing altered fractionation (AFX; Meta-Analysis of Radiotherapy in Squamous Cell Carcinomas of Head and Neck [MARCH] data set) or chemotherapy (Meta-Analysis of Chemotherapy in Head and Neck Cancer [****-NC] data set). Generalized competing event regression was applied to the control arms in MARCH, and patients were stratified by tertile according to the ω score, which quantified the relative hazard for cancer versus competing events. The classifier was externally validated on the ****-NC data set. The study tested for interactions between the ω score and treatment effects on overall survival (OS).
Factors associated with a higher ω score were a younger age, a better performance status, an oral cavity site, higher T and N categories, and a p16-negative/unknown status. Many group-living primate species have evolved the capacity for some individuals to live alone for part of their lives, but this solitary life stage has rarely been the subject of focused research. The mantled howler monkey (Alouatta palliata) is a social primate species with bisexual dispersal that lives in mixed-sex groups with low male-to-female sex ratios. Consequently, males often spend a long period of their lives as solitary individuals. This study compares the tree use, feeding, and long-distance vocalization behavior of solitary and group-living mantled howler monkey males living within a fragmented rainforest in Costa Rica, La Suerte Biological Research Station. Based on differences in competitive ability between solitary and group-living males, we predicted that lone males would be found in significantly smaller feeding and resting trees, consume more low-quality foods, and produce shorter howling bouts made at lower rates than group-living males.
We collected data on tree use and feeding during 30-min focal samples on male focal animals, recording data at 2-min intervals. We measured the trees in which the monkeys fed and rested for two or more intervals, and recorded the plant parts consumed. We recorded howling behavior using all-occurrences sampling.
Lone males used significantly smaller feeding and resting trees, consumed more low-quality foods, and howled at lower rates but had longer howling bouts triggered by anthropogenic noise more than group-living males.
Our results demonstrate that lone males differ in their behavioral ecology compared to group-living males, thus improving understanding of the solitary male life stage in primates.

Eleven criteria correlating electrocardiogram (ECG) findings with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) have been previously published. These have not been compared head-to-head in a single study. We studied their value as a screening test to identify patients with reduced LVEF estimated by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging.
ECGs and CMR from 548 patients (age 61+11years, 79% male) with previous myocardial infarction (MI), from the DETERMINE and PRE-DETERMINE studies, were analyzed. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) of each criterion for identifying patients with LVEF≤30% and≤40% were studied. A useful screening test should have high sensitivity and NPV.
Mean LVEF was 40% (SD=11%); 264 patients (48.2%) had LVEF≤40%, and 96 patients (17.5%) had LVEF≤30%. Six of 11 criteria were associated with a significant lower LVEF, but had poor sensitivity to identify LVEF≤30% (range 2.1%-55.2%) or LVEF≤40% (1.1%-51.1%); NPVs were good for LVEF≤30% (range 82.8%-85.9%) but not for LVEF≤40% (range 52.1%-60.6%). Goldberger's third criterion (RV4/SV4<1) and combinations of maximal QRS duration>124ms+either Goldberger's third criterion or Goldberger's first criterion (SV1 or SV2+RV5 or RV6≥3.5mV) had high specificity (95.4%-100%) for LVEF≤40%, although seen in only 48 (8.8%) patients; predictive values were similar on subgroup analysis.

We investigated the regulation of ion transport across the lipid bilayer to understand differences in biological activity for a series of amphiphilic polymethyloxazoline - polyethyleneimine copolymers. The results confirmed that the tested structures were able to increase the permeability of the lipid bilayer (LB) membrane or its rupture. Black lipid membrane (BLM) experiments show that the triggered conductance profile and its character is strongly correlated with the polymer structure and zeta potential. The polymer exhibiting the highest antimicrobial activity promotes ion transport by using a unique mechanism and step-like characteristics with well-defined discreet openings and closings. The molecule was incorporated into the membrane in a reproducible way, and the observed channel-like activity could be responsible for the antibacterial activity of this molecule.Low-melting-point (LMP) metals represent an interesting family of electrode materials owing to their high ionic conductivity, good ductility or fluidity, low hardness and/or superior alloying capability, all of which are crucial characteristics to address battery challenges such as interfacial incompatibility, electrode pulverization, and dendrite growth. The sensing surface was modified into graphene oxide (GO), and an antibody was fixed by using the amine-aldehyde linker. GO enhanced the antibody immobilization and the consequence electric current flow upon interacting with IL-8. The detection limit of IL-8 was reached to 10 pg/mL in a linear range from 1 to 10,000 pg/mL with the regression of y = 0.7246x - 0.906 (R² = 0.9758); further, the sensitivity falls at 1 pg/mL. The surface does not show the antifouling effect with control antibody, and proteins, indicating the specific IL-8 detection. The detection of IL-8 helps in diagnosing and solving the related problems of asthmatic patients.The lengthy process to generate transformed plants is a limitation in current research on the interactions of the model plant pathogen Pseudomonas syringae with plant hosts. Here we present an easy method called agromonas, where we quantify P. syringae growth in agroinfiltrated leaves of Nicotiana benthamiana using a cocktail of antibiotics to select P. syringae on plates. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate that transient expression of PAMP receptors reduces bacterial growth, and that transient depletion of a host immune gene and transient expression of a type-III effector increase P. syringae growth in agromonas assays. We show that we can rapidly achieve structure-function analysis of immune components and test the function of immune hydrolases. The agromonas method is easy, fast and robust for routine disease assays with various Pseudomonas strains without transforming plants or bacteria. The agromonas assay offers a reliable approach for further comprehensive analysis of plant immunity.
Transannular patch, which results in pulmonary insufficiency (PI), is usually required during repair of tetralogy of fallot (TOF). In this study, we compared three types of pulmonary valve reconstruction techniques during transannular repair of TOF.
Between February 2014 and January 2018, 50 patients with TOF underwent primary repair with transannular patch. These patients were divided into three groups. In Group 1, (n = 15), a single gluteraldehyde-treated autologous pericardial patch (standard method) was reconstructed as monocusp. In Group 2, (n = 16) Nunn's bileaflet pulmonary valve reconstruction technique was used with pericardial patch. In Group 3, (n = 19), Nunn's bileaflet technique was performed with expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membrane. The outcomes of the patients and early and midterm competency of the pulmonary valves were analyzed.
These techniques were significantly effective in early postoperative period. Freedom from moderate to severe PI were 73.3%; 100% and 89.4%, respectively. Mortality, duration of intensive care unit and hospital stay were similar between the groups.

Higher NETs were detected in the airways of children with ventilator-free days less than 20 days. Increased airway cell IFN signaling, neutrophil activation, and NET production is associated with PARDS. Higher levels of airway NETs are associated with fewer ventilator-free days.Dietary phosphate intake is closely correlated with protein intake. However, the effects of the latter on phosphate-induced organ injuries remain uncertain. Herein, we investigated the effects of low (10.8%), moderate (23.0%), and high (35.2%) dietary casein and egg albumin administration on phosphate-induced organ injuries in rats. The moderate and high casein levels suppressed renal tubulointerstitial fibrosis and maintained mitochondrial integrity in the kidney. The serum creatinine levels were suppressed only in the high casein group. Phosphate-induced muscle weakness was also ameliorated by high dietary casein. The urinary and fecal phosphate levels in the early experiment stage showed that dietary casein did not affect phosphate absorption from the intestine. High dietary egg albumin showed similar kidney protective effects, while the egg albumin effects on muscle weakness were only marginally significant. As the plasma branched-chain amino acid levels were elevated in casein- and egg albumin-fed rats, we analyzed their effects. The distribution patterns were shaped by features extrinsic to the species, such as the hydrogeological properties of the aquifers, and by species' intrinsic characteristics such as the preference for a given habitat type and dispersal abilities. Higher NETs were detected in the airways of children with ventilator-free days less than 20 days. Increased airway cell IFN signaling, neutrophil activation, and NET production is associated with PARDS. Higher levels of airway NETs are associated with fewer ventilator-free days.Dietary phosphate intake is closely correlated with protein intake. However, the effects of the latter on phosphate-induced organ injuries remain uncertain. Herein, we investigated the effects of low (10.8%), moderate (23.0%), and high (35.2%) dietary casein and egg albumin administration on phosphate-induced organ injuries in rats. The moderate and high casein levels suppressed renal tubulointerstitial fibrosis and maintained mitochondrial integrity in the kidney. The serum creatinine levels were suppressed only in the high casein group. Phosphate-induced muscle weakness was also ameliorated by high dietary casein. The urinary and fecal phosphate levels in the early experiment stage showed that dietary casein did not affect phosphate absorption from the intestine. High dietary egg albumin showed similar kidney protective effects, while the egg albumin effects on muscle weakness were only marginally significant. As the plasma branched-chain amino acid levels were elevated in casein- and egg albumin-fed rats, we analyzed their effects. Transgenic cotton expressing Cry51Aa2.834_16 Bt toxin (hereafter referred to as MON 88702) has the potential to be an important tool for pest management due to its unique activity against tobacco thrips, Frankliniella fusca. Unlike other Bt toxins targeting lepidopteran cotton pests, MON 88702 does not cause direct mortality but has an antixenotic effect that suppresses F. fusca oviposition. Previous work has shown neonicotinoid seed treated (NST) crops have similar behavioral effects on thrips. This study used non-choice and common garden experiments to examine how the presence of MON 88702 cotton and soybean (another F. fusca host) with and without NSTs might alter F. fusca infestation distributions. In a no-choice environment, significant larval establishment differences were observed, with untreated soybean plants becoming most heavily infested. In choice experiments, plants expressing MON 88702 or were neonicotinoid treated had significantly lower larval establishment. Larval density decreased as dispersal distance increased, suggesting reproductive decisions were negatively related to distance from the release point. Italy has been the first European country recording an elevated number of infected forcing the Italian Government to call for total lockdown. The lockdown had the aim to limit the spread of infection through social distancing. The purpose of this study is to analyze how the pandemic has affected the patient's accesses to the Ophthalmological Emergency Department of a tertiary referral center in central-northern Italy, during the lockdown period. The charts of all patients that came to the Emergency Department during the lockdown period (March 10 -May 4, 2020) have been retrospectively collected and compared with those in the same period of 2019 and the period from 15 January- 9 March 2020. A significant reduction of visits during the lockdown has been observed, compared with those of pre-lockdown period (reduction of 65.4%) and with those of the same period of 2019 (reduction of 74.3%). Particularly, during the lockdown, minor and not urgency visits decreased whereas the undeferrable urgency ones increased. For each farm and each lactation period, a mixed model statistical analysis was performed with daily milk production as response, and group, day as well as the interaction between those two factors as fixed factors. Chi-square test was used to compare abortion rate and prolonged inter-oestrous interval rate between treatment and control groups. A significant increase in milk production in the vaccinated group was observed in farms 1 (1.023 L/day) and 3 (0.611 L/day) during EL (p less then 0.001) and in farm 2 (1.799 L/day) during ML (P less then 0.001). In addition, at farm 2, vaccinated cows produced more milk than non-vaccinated cows starting from 80 DIM. No differences were found between groups in abortion rates or prolonged inter-oestrous interval rates. Data demonstrate that cows in herds endemically infected with BVDV and vaccinated with live double-deleted BVDV vaccine produce more milk; the difference in milk production occurs during early lactation.

In conclusion, variants in NF1 and NF2 genes, amplification of key driver genes, and somatic and mitochondrial INV variants may play important roles in the development of pancreatic schwannoma and neurofibroma.Pancreatic cystic insulinoma is an uncommon tumor. Perioperative localization remained challenging if the tumor is atypical with cystic feature or in small size. Near-infrared (NIR) imaging is a technique by injecting fluorescent dye intravenously, which accumulates to the target lesion and creating signal by laser sources. The signal helps surgeons to identify the lesion during operation, but little experience has been reported regarding the use of imaging NIR technique for localizing cystic insulinoma. We present a 29-year-old female patient with a symptomatic pancreatic cystic insulinoma (1.2 cm) as assessed by clinical symptom, laboratory evidence, and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography. With an aid of NIR imaging technique, this cystic tumor was localized easily at operation. Also, the fluorescence imaging visualized the tumor part, guided us to identify the safe margin, and preserved the normal pancreatic structure. Pathologic report confirmed that the tumor was a well-differentiated cystic insulinoma. This case demonstrates that pancreatic cystic insulinoma in small size can be intraoperatively localized by NIR imaging, a relatively safe and easy technique.
Currently, insulin and/or heparin/low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) serve as an early lipid-lowering treatment for hypertriglyceridemic pancreatitis (HTGP). However, whether the clinical prognosis of combining LMWH with insulin is superior to using insulin alone remains unknown. This trial will compare the clinical outcomes of LMWH with insulin and an insulin regimen for emergency lipid-lowering treatment in HTGP patients.
In total, 476 eligible participants will be recruited from 18 hospitals throughout China. Participants in the LMWH group will receive LMWH combined with insulin, whereas insulin alone will be administered to those in the insulin group. The patients will be followed up at 3 and 6 months after discharge. Adverse reactions will be evaluated by the safety monitoring committee. Safety outcomes and adverse events will also be recorded.
The study is registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (No ChiCTR1900023640). Recruitment will begin in August 2019 and will be completed in December 2021 (http//www.chictr.org.cn/index.aspx). No data are available now.

In 2017 and 2019, the World Health Organization defined grade 3 neuroendocrine tumors (G3 NETs) and neuroendocrine carcinoma (G3 NEC) in the pancreas. The validity of this classification remains to be verified.
Clinical data were collected and analyzed for 39 G3 pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (PanNENs) patients between 2009 and 2018.
The tumor-node-metastasis stage (P = 0.0260), differentiation (P = 0.0115), and Ki-67 index (P = 0.0371) are prognostic factors for G3 PanNENs by Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. Among 39 patients, 18 had a Ki-67 index of less than 55% and well-differentiated morphology (G3 NET) and 16 had a Ki-67 index of 55% or greater and poorly differentiated morphology (G3 NEC). Grade 3 neuroendocrine tumor had a significant better prognosis than G3 NEC (median overall survival time, 25 months [95% confidence interval, 10.854-39.146 months] vs 12 months [95% confidence interval, 6.316-17.684 months], P = 0.0164). Based on Cox regression analyses, tumor-node-metastasis stage (P = 0.016) was identified as the independent prognostic factor for G3 PanNENs.

The multidrug regimen with fluorouracil, leucovorin, irinotecan, and oxaliplatin (FOLFIRINOX) is widely used for recurrent pancreatic cancer after pancreatic resection. However, there are concerns about severe toxicities and poor tolerability of FOLFIRINOX in these patients because some suffer from surgery-associated malnutrition, weight loss, and diabetes mellitus. We evaluated the toxicity and tolerability of FOLFIRINOX in these patients.

Perioperative localization remained challenging if the tumor is atypical with cystic feature or in small size. Near-infrared (NIR) imaging is a technique by injecting fluorescent dye intravenously, which accumulates to the target lesion and creating signal by laser sources. The signal helps surgeons to identify the lesion during operation, but little experience has been reported regarding the use of imaging NIR technique for localizing cystic insulinoma. We present a 29-year-old female patient with a symptomatic pancreatic cystic insulinoma (1.2 cm) as assessed by clinical symptom, laboratory evidence, and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography. With an aid of NIR imaging technique, this cystic tumor was localized easily at operation. Also, the fluorescence imaging visualized the tumor part, guided us to identify the safe margin, and preserved the normal pancreatic structure. Pathologic report confirmed that the tumor was a well-differentiated cystic insulinoma. This case demonstrates that pancreatic cystic insulinoma in small size can be intraoperatively localized by NIR imaging, a relatively safe and easy technique. Currently, insulin and/or heparin/low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) serve as an early lipid-lowering treatment for hypertriglyceridemic pancreatitis (HTGP). However, whether the clinical prognosis of combining LMWH with insulin is superior to using insulin alone remains unknown. This trial will compare the clinical outcomes of LMWH with insulin and an insulin regimen for emergency lipid-lowering treatment in HTGP patients. In total, 476 eligible participants will be recruited from 18 hospitals throughout China. Participants in the LMWH group will receive LMWH combined with insulin, whereas insulin alone will be administered to those in the insulin group. The patients will be followed up at 3 and 6 months after discharge. Adverse reactions will be evaluated by the safety monitoring committee. Safety outcomes and adverse events will also be recorded. The tumor-node-metastasis stage (P = 0.0260), differentiation (P = 0.0115), and Ki-67 index (P = 0.0371) are prognostic factors for G3 PanNENs by Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. Among 39 patients, 18 had a Ki-67 index of less than 55% and well-differentiated morphology (G3 NET) and 16 had a Ki-67 index of 55% or greater and poorly differentiated morphology (G3 NEC). The development of novel approaches to control unwanted immune responses represents an ambitious goal in the management of a number of clinical conditions, including autoimmunity, autoinflammatory diseases, allergies and replacement therapies, in which the T cell response to self or non-harmful antigens threatens the physiological function of tissues and organs. Current treatments for these conditions rely on the use of non-specific immunosuppressive agents and supportive therapies, which may efficiently dampen inflammation and compensate for organ dysfunction, but they require lifelong treatments not devoid of side effects. These limitations induced researchers to undertake the development of definitive and specific solutions to these disorders the underlying principle of the novel approaches relies on the idea that empowering the tolerogenic arm of the immune system would restore the immune homeostasis and control the disease. Researchers effort resulted in the development of cell-free strategies, including gene vaccination, protein-based approaches and nanoparticles, and an increasing number of clinical trials tested the ability of adoptive transfer of regulatory cells, including T and myeloid cells. Here we will provide an overview of the most promising approaches currently under development, and we will discuss their potential advantages and limitations. The current models of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) binding and antigenic prediction are still inaccurate. In this study, 360 9-mer peptides with verified immunological activity were selected to construct a prediction of tumor neoantigen (POTN) model, an immunogenic prediction model specifically for the human leukocyte antigen-A2 allele. Based on the physicochemical properties of amino acids, such as the residue propensity, hydrophobicity, and organic solvent/water, we found that the predictive capability of POTN is superior to that of the prediction programs SYPEITHI, IEDB, and NetMHCpan 4.0. We used POTN to screen peptides for the cancer-testis antigen located on the X chromosome, and we identified several peptides that may trigger immunogenicity. We synthesized and measured the binding affinity and immunogenicity of these peptides and found that the accuracy of POTN is higher than that of NetMHCpan 4.0. Identifying the properties related to the T cell response or immunogenicity paves the way to understanding the ****peptide/T cell receptor complex. The current study tested a preliminary cascade model of parent dysfunction-i.e., internalizing psychopathology and emotion dysregulation-whereby parent dysfunction is transmitted to children through the impact of parental emotion socialization on child emotion regulation. Participants were 705 mothers (Mage = 36.17, SD = 7.55) and fathers (Mage = 35.43, SD = 6.49) of children aged 8 to 12 years who self-reported on their internalizing psychopathology, emotion regulation difficulties, and emotion socialization practices, and on their child's internalizing psychopathology and emotion regulation. Using a split sample method, we employed a data-driven approach to develop a conceptual model from our initially proposed theoretical model with the first subsample (n = 352, 51% mothers), and then validated this model in a second subsample (n = 353, 49% mothers). Results supported a model in which the transmission of dysfunction from parent to child was sequentially mediated by unsupportive parental emotion socialization-but not supportive parental emotion socialization-and child emotion dysregulation. The indirect effects from the final model did not differ by parent gender. Findings provide preliminary support for a mechanism by which maternal and paternal internalizing psychopathology and emotion dysregulation disrupt parental emotion socialization by increasing unsupportive emotion socialization practices, which impacts children's development of emotion regulation skills and risk for internalizing psychopathology.Prior research suggests that the pandemic coronavirus pushes all the "hot spots" for risk perceptions, yet both governments and populations have varied in their responses. Class attendance was documented on a weekly basis (behavior frequency) during the semester. Before, during and immediately after each class, participants filled in the Feeling Scale (affective valence). Furthermore, at the beginning of each class, they answered a question about their automaticity in arriving at the decision to attend the class (instigation habit). We used a two-level modeling approach to predict subsequent automaticity by the different constructs at the previous attendance. Results The cumulative frequency of prior class attendance did not significantly enhance the automaticity of the decision to re-attend the class. There were significant effects of valence on automaticity on the between-subject level, i.e., a one-point higher mean valence score was associated with a 0.62 point increase in automaticity (p = 0.001). No moderation effects of affect on the association between behavior frequency and automaticity were observed. Conclusion Behavior repetition, albeit not significant, and positive affective states at the end of an exercise class may be beneficial in building exercise instigation habits. In four studies, we show that marketing communications can elicit anticipatory nostalgia, and this emotion can either enhance or reduce consumer enjoyment of the experience, depending on the experience valence or the individual's level of life satisfaction. Specifically, mediated by anxiety, anticipatory nostalgia decreased enjoyment and positive affect in pleasant situations, but it enhanced enjoyment and affect in unpleasant circumstances. A total of 2971 adolescents, aged 10-19 (M = 14.6, SD = 1.5), who were recruited from eight schools in Santiago, Chile (n = 2022), and eight schools in Medellín, Colombia (n = 949), completed the DSS-Personal, the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), and a questionnaire of individual sociodemographic characteristics. Factor structure, internal consistency, and validity of the DSS-Personal were assessed.

As the economic impacts of the pandemic have become salient, governments have begun to slash their budgets for mitigating other global risks, including climate change, likely imposing increased future costs from those risks. Risk analysts have long argued that global environmental and health risks are inseparable at some level, and must ultimately be managed systemically, to effectively increase safety and welfare. In contrast, it has been suggested that we have worry budgets, in which one risk crowds out another. Methods 226 participants (64% females, mean age 24 years) who attended weekly sports and gym classes at two universities were followed for 13 weeks. Class attendance was documented on a weekly basis (behavior frequency) during the semester. Before, during and immediately after each class, participants filled in the Feeling Scale (affective valence). Furthermore, at the beginning of each class, they answered a question about their automaticity in arriving at the decision to attend the class (instigation habit). We used a two-level modeling approach to predict subsequent automaticity by the different constructs at the previous attendance. Results The cumulative frequency of prior class attendance did not significantly enhance the automaticity of the decision to re-attend the class. There were significant effects of valence on automaticity on the between-subject level, i.e., a one-point higher mean valence score was associated with a 0.62 point increase in automaticity (p = 0.001). No moderation effects of affect on the association between behavior frequency and automaticity were observed. Conclusion Behavior repetition, albeit not significant, and positive affective states at the end of an exercise class may be beneficial in building exercise instigation habits. In four studies, we show that marketing communications can elicit anticipatory nostalgia, and this emotion can either enhance or reduce consumer enjoyment of the experience, depending on the experience valence or the individual's level of life satisfaction. Specifically, mediated by anxiety, anticipatory nostalgia decreased enjoyment and positive affect in pleasant situations, but it enhanced enjoyment and affect in unpleasant circumstances. This operation seems to be a good choice for improving the quality of life of people with coronary pathologies, once the possible existing risks have been assessed.The South African Mental Health Act of 2002 advocates the de-institutionalization of treatment of patients with mental disorders, so that the mental health care users or patients are treated in their communities. Although this approach is often used to discharge patients from hospital, no feasibility assessments are conducted to ascertain adequate care for these patients. The objective of the study was to explore the experiences of family members who provide home care for patients with serious mental disorders. A qualitative explorative design was used to interview 20 primary caregivers whose family members were readmitted to a public psychiatric hospital in Pretoria. Data were analysed using NVivo version 11. The findings are that caring for patients with serious mental illness at home is difficult, sometimes unbearable, because the families have to deal with violence perpetrated by the patients, safety concerns, financial difficulties and emotional turmoil, and wish that the patients would be kept in institutions. The absence of required skills and resources to care for the mentally ill at home exposes the patients and their families to emotional, financial and social difficulties, and results in unfavourable outcomes for both the patients and their families.Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising cancer treatment which involves a photosensitizer (PS), light at a specific wavelength for PS activation and oxygen, which combine to elicit cell death. While the illumination required to activate a PS imparts a certain amount of selectivity to PDT treatments, poor tumor accumulation and cell internalization are still inherent properties of most intravenously administered PSs. As a result, common consequences of PDT include skin photosensitivity. To overcome the mentioned issues, PSs may be tailored to specifically target overexpressed biomarkers of tumors. This active targeting can be achieved by direct conjugation of the PS to a ligand with enhanced affinity for a target overexpressed on cancer cells and/or other cells of the tumor microenvironment. Alternatively, PSs may be incorporated into ligand-targeted nanocarriers, which may also encompass multi-functionalities, including diagnosis and therapy. In this review, we highlight the major advances in active targeting of PSs, either by means of ligand-derived bioconjugates or by exploiting ligand-targeting nanocarriers.The ability of hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) inflorescence extract to counteract lipid oxidation was studied in stripped linseed oil. The ethanolic extract was characterized in terms of terpenes (6.00 mg/mL), cannabidiol (4.99% w/w), phenolic compounds (1.80 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/mL), antiradical, and metal ion-chelating activities (50% effective concentration (EC50) of 2.47 mg/mL and 0.39 mg/mL, respectively). The stripped linseed oil, used as control (CO), was mixed with hemp extract (HO) or α-tocopherol (EO) at a ratio of 0.6% (w/w) and stored for 7 days in darkness at 40 °C. Hemp extract reduced the oxidation and lipolysis processes. At the end of the storage, HO showed a significantly higher level of α-linolenic acid (ALA; 26.64 g/100 g), lower peroxide value (PV) (21.19 meq O2/kg oil), and lower hexanal content (7.67 mmol/kg oil) than those found in the control. In contrast, EO showed a marked lipolysis (the free fatty acids increased by 42.57%) and a noticeable oxidation, since the ALA content decreased by 2.10% and a PV of 50 meq O2/kg oil was observed. This study demonstrates that hemp inflorescences can be used as a source of natural antioxidants in vegetable oils and lipid products to retard their oxidation, especially those characterized by a high degree of unsaturation.This paper proposes a novel interconnected observer to get good estimates of attitude and gyro bias from high-noise vector measurements. To obtain higher estimation accuracy, an approach to calculate time-varying gains for the proposed auxiliary observer is designed under the premise of considering noise terms in the rate gyro and vector sensors.
