In developing countries, there are several adult tuberculosis (TB) patients suffering from profound undernutrition. Undernutrition is a significant risk factor for developing tuberculosis. In the world, TB is one of the top ten and leading causes of death. To appropriately intervene death of adult TB patients, it is crucial to understand the magnitude of undernutrition and its associated factors among them. The study assessed undernutrition and mortality among adult tuberculosis patients in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Institutional-based retrospective study was conducted in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from January 2019 to August 2019. The sample size was allocated to the selected health facilities proportional to their size, and study subjects were enrolled to the study during the study period. Polymerized-type I collagen (polymerized-collagen) is a downregulator of inflammation and a tissue regenerator. The aim was to evaluate the effect of intra-articular injections (IAIs) of polymerized-collagen among patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA) in delaying or preventing joint replacement surgery.
. This was a cohort study of 309 patients with knee OA. Patients with mild-to-moderate disease were treated weekly with IAIs of 2 mL of polymerized-collagen for six weeks (
= 309). Follow-up was for 6-60 months. The primary endpoints included the following determinations (1) therapeutic effect; (2) survival from total knee replacement surgery (TKR); (3) Western Ontario and McMaster University Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and pain (visual analogue scale, VAS). Clinical improvement was defined as a decrease in pain exceeding 20 mm on the VAS and the achievement of at least 20% improvement from baseline with respect to the WOMAC score. Radiographic analysis was performed at baseline and 60 months. The joint space width in the medial, lateral, and patellofemoral compartments was calculated.
Patients who received IAIs of polymerized-collagen had a statistically significant improvement in the primary criteria (
< 0.05). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis of the therapeutic effect demonstrated 98.8% survival at 60 months with TKR as the endpoint. There was no significant reduction in joint space in any compartment based on the analyzed radiographs. No serious adverse events were recorded.

Despite the research progress in the thoraco-lumbo-pelvic balance, cervical spine balance has only recently gained increasing interest. To our knowledge, there is a lack of research regarding sagittal occipitocervical spine balance restoration following posterior occipitocervical fusion (POCF).
The primary outcome measure is the evaluation of sagittal cervical alignment roentgenographic parameters and the secondary is the functional outcome (NDI), following POCF for upper (C1 & C2) cervical trauma (UCT) in coexistence with upper cervical spine degeneration.

The present study aimed to develop a commercial active packaging system of ground beef, by exploiting the antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of a traditional Greek alcoholic distillate called "tsipouro". Commercial packages (500 g) were used and 40 mL of "tsipouro" was added in absorbent pads placed underneath the ground beef, while 10 mL was also mounted under the packaging film, facing the headspace. Samples were packaged in 80% O2 20% CO2 and stored at 0, 4, 8, and 12 °C. Total Viable Counts, pseudomonads, Brochothrix thermosphacta, lactic acid bacteria, yeasts-moulds, pH, colour (L*, a*, b*), odour (buttery and acidic), and ethanol migration to ground beef (SPME/GC-FID) were determined. Moreover, mathematical models (square root and Arrhenius) describing the effect of temperature on determinant indicators of spoilage and quality deterioration like growth of dominant microorganisms and red colour reduction were developed and validated under non-isothermal conditions. B. thermosphacta dominated the microbial association of ground beef, while LAB were second in dominance, revealing a high growth potential at all assays. a* value (redness) was gradually decreased in controls, while samples treated with "tsipouro" showed more stable red colour during storage. We tested a putative departure from the four seasons calendar in the phenology of Culicoides and the vector subassemblage in the Florida panhandle. Two years of weekly abundance data, temporal scales, persistence and environmental thresholds were analyzed using a tripartite Culicoides β-diversity based modeling approach. Culicoides phenology followed a two-season regime and was explained by stream flow and temperature, but not rainfall. Species richness fit a nested pattern where the species recruitment was maximized during spring months. Midges were active year-round, and two suspected vectors species, Culicoides venustus and Culicoides stellifer, were able to sustain and connect the seasonal modules. Persistence suggests that Orbivirus maintenance does not rely on overwintering and that viruses are maintained year-round, with the seasonal dynamics resembling subtropical Culicoides communities with temporal-overlapping between multivoltine species. Given that clinicians often rely on technological aids-such as clinical decision support systems (CDSS) and drug interaction software-to identify and resolve DDIs in patients with complex drug regimens, this narrative review provides an appraisal of the performance of existing technologies. Opioid-specific CDSS have several system- and content-related limitations that need to be overcome. Specifically, we found that these CDSS often analyze DDIs in a pairwise manner, do not account for relevant pharmacogenomic results, and do not integrate well with electronic health records. In the context of polypharmacy, existing systems may encourage inadvertent serious alert dismissal due to the generation of multiple incoherent alerts. Future technological systems should minimize alert fatigue, limit manual input, allow for simultaneous multidrug interaction assessments, incorporate pharmacogenomic data, conduct iterative risk simulations, and integrate seamlessly with normal workflow.Glutathione (GSH) was initially identified and characterized for its redox properties and later for its contributions to detoxification reactions. Hymenopteran stings are the most common animal insult injury encountered in the emergency department. With increasing global spread of imported fire ants in recent decades, the rate of Formicidae assault has become a serious problem in many countries. Formicidae-associated injuries gradually increased in Taiwan in recent decades and became the second most common arthropod assault injury in our ED. The present study aimed at comparing the clinical characteristics of Formicidae sting patients with those of the most serious and common group, Vespidae sting patients, in an emergency department (ED) in Taiwan.

To extend the existing knowledge on social patterning of adolescents' sex hormones, in the current study, we studied social patterning of sex hormones in a national sample of male and female American adolescents, with a particular interest in the role of race and SES. For this cross-sectional study, data came from the baseline data (wave 1) of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, a national longitudinal prospective study of American adolescents. Several groups have instituted helmet initiatives with varying success across the world. Helmet use has been well documented to prevent traumatic brain injury. Despite the known benefits, many people, including university students, refuse to utilize helmets when riding bikes, mopeds, or motorcycles. We recognized a need within our community regarding the lack of helmet use at University of Florida and developed a program to institute change.
We identified community champions and hosted weekly round table discussion initiatives. Through these round table discussions we identified events already going on within the community and developed new opportunities to promote helmet use. We had stories from survivors and parents, utilized school administration support, and partnered with local bike shops.
The pilot initiative was successful in increasing awareness across the city and got stakeholders excited in the process. It also spearheaded more data driven initiatives that will look at reduction of traumatic brain injuries in the clinical setting.
This project highlights the University of Florida Helmet Initiative that has already generated renewed interest in safety and traumatic brain injury prevention. The school of nursing has implemented safety protocols and further support is being garnered by the administration across campus. Interestingly, we find that no existing techniques can measure all second moments simultaneously with QFI-limited precision; there exists a fundamental trade-off between precisely measuring the mean orientation of a molecule versus its wobble. This theoretical analysis provides crucial insight for optimizing the design of orientation-sensitive imaging systems.
Patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome are at risk for developing cardiac dysfunction which is independently associated with worse outcomes. Transthoracic echocardiography is an ideal imaging modality for goal-directed assessment and optimization of cardiac function and volume status. Prone positioning, while demonstrated to improve oxygenation, offload the right ventricle, and reduce short-term mortality in acute respiratory distress syndrome, has previously precluded transthoracic echocardiography on these patients. The purpose of this study was to assess the ability to perform focused transthoracic echocardiography examinations on acute respiratory distress syndrome patients in the prone position.

Several groups have instituted helmet initiatives with varying success across the world. Helmet use has been well documented to prevent traumatic brain injury. Despite the known benefits, many people, including university students, refuse to utilize helmets when riding bikes, mopeds, or motorcycles. We recognized a need within our community regarding the lack of helmet use at University of Florida and developed a program to institute change. We identified community champions and hosted weekly round table discussion initiatives. Through these round table discussions we identified events already going on within the community and developed new opportunities to promote helmet use. We had stories from survivors and parents, utilized school administration support, and partnered with local bike shops. The pilot initiative was successful in increasing awareness across the city and got stakeholders excited in the process. It also spearheaded more data driven initiatives that will look at reduction of traumatic brain injuries in the clinical setting. Analyzing the sensitivities of the best performing Random Forest model showed that the lower opioid requirements are predicted with better accuracy (89%) as compared with higher opioid requirements (43%). Feature importance (% relative importance) of model predictions showed that the type of procedure (15.4%), medical history (12.9%) and procedure duration (12.0%) were the top three features contributing to model predictions. Overall, the contribution of patient and procedure features towards model predictions were 65% and 35% respectively. Machine learning models could be used to predict postoperative opioid requirements in ambulatory surgery patients and could potentially assist in better management of their postoperative acute pain.We wanted to investigate whether Isoniazid (INH) can directly stimulate activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) and enhance production of collagen. Treatment of human hepatic stellate cell line LX2 with or without 5μM INH for 24 to 72 hours was performed to look into content of cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1), activity of NADPH oxidase (NOX) and intracellular oxidative stress. Protein level as well as mRNA expression of alpha smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and collagen1A1 (COL1A1) were assessed by western blot and real time PCR. In some experiments pyrazole (PY) was pre-treated to LX2 cells to induce CYP2E1 prior to INH treatment. CYP2E1 level as well as NOX activity was gradually increased with INH treatment in LX2 cells till 72 hours. Following 72 hours of INH exposure, intracellular glutathione (GSH) level was found to be reduced compared to control (p less then 0.01) and showed expression of α-SMA, indicating activation of HSC. In this study, we aim to (1) enable susceptibility distortion correction with historical and/or limited diffusion show generalizability of the proposed approach to datasets that were not in the original training / validation / testing datasets. These datasets included varying populations, contrasts, resolutions, and magnitudes and orientations of distortion and show efficacious distortion correction. The method is available as a Singularity container, source code, and an executable trained model to facilitate evaluation.There has been rapidly accelerating interest in the utilization of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as non-invasive methods for rapid point-of-care medical diagnostics. There is widespread variation in analytical methods and protocols, with little understanding of the effects of sample storage on VOC profiles. This study aimed to determine the effects on VOC profiles of different storage times, at room temperature, prior to freezing, of sealed urine samples from healthy individuals. Analysis using Field Asymmetric Ion Motility Spectrometry (FAIMS) determined the alterations in VOC and total ion count profiles as a result of increasing room temperature storage times. Results indicated that increasing exposure time to room temperature prior to freezing had a threefold effect. Firstly, increased urinary VOC profile variability, with a plateau phase between 12 and 48 hours, before further degradation. Secondly, an increase in total ion count with time exposed to room temperature. Finally, a deterioration in VOCs with each sample run during the analysis process. This provides new insight into the effect of storage of urine samples for VOC analysis using FAIMS technology. Lithium-induced nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI) is a rare and difficult-to-treat condition. We describe the case of an 81-year-old woman with bipolar treated with lithium and no previous history of diabetes insipidus. She was hospitalized due to disturbance of consciousness and was diagnosed with, hypercalcemia, hyperparathyroidism, and NDI. Adult female tyrosine hydroxylase haploinsufficient (TH-HZ) **** exhibit behavioral impairments, premature immunosenescence and oxidative- inflammatory stress. All these deteriorations are associated with a lower lifespan than wild type (WT) counterparts. The aim was to analyze whether the cohabitation with WT animals could revert or at least ameliorate the deterioration in the nervous and immune systems that female TH-HZ **** show at adult age. Female TH-HZ and WT **** at age of 3-4 weeks were divided into following groups control TH-HZ (5 TH-HZ **** in the cage; TH-HZ100%), control WT (5 WT **** in the cage; WT100%), TH-HZ > 50% and WT 50% (2 TH-HZ and 5 WT **** in each cage). At the age of 37-38 weeks, all **** were submitted to a battery of behavioral tests, evaluating sensorimotor abilities, exploratory capacities and anxiety-like behaviors. Subsequently, peritoneal leukocytes were extracted and several immune functions as well as oxidative and inflammatory stress parameters were analyzed. The results showed that the TH-HZ less then 50% group had improved behavioral responses, especially anxiety-like behaviors, and the immunosenescence and oxidative stress of their peritoneal leukocytes were ameliorated. However, WT **** that cohabited with TH-HZ **** presented higher anxiety-like behaviors and deterioration in immune functions and in their inflammatory stress parameters. Sarcopenia, defined as a decrease in the skeletal muscle mass and its function, is associated with a poor clinical outcome in several malignancies. We aimed to examine whether sarcopenia can be a predictor of incompletion of concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) and survival for head and neck cancer (HNC) patients.
Forty-one male HNC patients who received CCRT were enrolled in the study. Cross-sectional muscle areas at the third lumbar vertebral level were normalized by the squared height of the patients and were termed the lumbar skeletal muscle index (LSMI, cm
/m
), a marker of sarcopenia. Patients were divided into high (30/41, 73%) and low (11/41, 27%) LSMI groups. The LSMI cut-off value was set at 39.7 cm
/m
based on a receiver operating characteristic curve for incompletion of CCRT. The groups were compared for survival rate by the Kaplan-Meier method. Factors predicting incompletion of CCRT were investigated among several variables.
Multivariate analysis showed that a pre-treatment low LSMI (P = 0.033) and age over 70years (P = 0.023) were the only significant predictors for incompletion of CCRT. The 2-year disease-specific survival (DSS) rate was significantly lower in the low LSMI group (61%) than in the high LSMI group (97%, P = 0.012), whereas there were no differences in the DSS rate between the low and high body mass index groups.

Whether adjuvant chemotherapy (AC) has a survival benefit for all patients with pathological stage pT1N1M0 (Stage IB) gastric cancer (GC) remains controversial.
All patients with surgically resected, histologically confirmed pT1N1M0 GC between January 2011 and December 2017 at the National Cancer Center, China, were retrospectively reviewed.
A total of 179 patients with pT1N1M0 were identified. Survival analysis showed that both overall survival (OS) and cause-specific survival (CSS) were significantly different between patients treated with and without AC (p < 0.01). Independent risk factors for reduced OS identified in the Cox regression analysis in patients with pT1N1M0 cancer were sex (male sex, hazard ratio [HR] 2.470, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.294-4.718), examined lymph nodes (EN) (EN ≤ 15, HR 2.402; 95% CI 1.329-4.341), and AC (treated without AC, HR 2.554; 95% CI 1.393-4.681), which were also independent risk factors for reduced CSS. We divided patients with pT1N1M0 into three risk categories (high, moderate, and low) according to two significant prognostic factors (sex and EN) and found that both OS and CSS were significantly different between the three risk groups (p < 0.05).
An additional survival benefit related to AC is expected for selected pT1N1M0 patients. Male patients with EN ≤ 15 may be particularly appropriate candidates for AC.

Lithium enters the collecting duct's principal cells mainly via the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) located on their apical membranes, ENaC shows high selectivity for both sodium and lithium, is upregulated by aldosterone, and inhibited by triamterene. To our knowledge, this is the first publication on triamterene use in lithium-induced NDI patients.The social environment can influence the functional capacity of nervous and immune systems, and consequently the state of health, especially in aged individuals. Adult female tyrosine hydroxylase haploinsufficient (TH-HZ) mice exhibit behavioral impairments, premature immunosenescence and oxidative- inflammatory stress. All these deteriorations are associated with a lower lifespan than wild type (WT) counterparts. The aim was to analyze whether the cohabitation with WT animals could revert or at least ameliorate the deterioration in the nervous and immune systems that female TH-HZ mice show at adult age. Female TH-HZ and WT mice at age of 3-4 weeks were divided into following groups control TH-HZ (5 TH-HZ mice in the cage; TH-HZ100%), control WT (5 WT mice in the cage; WT100%), TH-HZ > 50% and WT 50% (2 TH-HZ and 5 WT mice in each cage). At the age of 37-38 weeks, all mice were submitted to a battery of behavioral tests, evaluating sensorimotor abilities, exploratory capacities and anxiety-like behaviors. Subsequently, peritoneal leukocytes were extracted and several immune functions as well as oxidative and inflammatory stress parameters were analyzed. The results showed that the TH-HZ less then 50% group had improved behavioral responses, especially anxiety-like behaviors, and the immunosenescence and oxidative stress of their peritoneal leukocytes were ameliorated. However, WT mice that cohabited with TH-HZ mice presented higher anxiety-like behaviors and deterioration in immune functions and in their inflammatory stress parameters. Sarcopenia, defined as a decrease in the skeletal muscle mass and its function, is associated with a poor clinical outcome in several malignancies. We aimed to examine whether sarcopenia can be a predictor of incompletion of concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) and survival for head and neck cancer (HNC) patients. Forty-one male HNC patients who received CCRT were enrolled in the study. Cross-sectional muscle areas at the third lumbar vertebral level were normalized by the squared height of the patients and were termed the lumbar skeletal muscle index (LSMI, cm /m ), a marker of sarcopenia. Patients were divided into high (30/41, 73%) and low (11/41, 27%) LSMI groups. The LSMI cut-off value was set at 39.7 cm /m based on a receiver operating characteristic curve for incompletion of CCRT. The groups were compared for survival rate by the Kaplan-Meier method. Factors predicting incompletion of CCRT were investigated among several variables. Multivariate analysis showed that a pre-treatment low LSMI (P = 0.033) and age over 70years (P = 0.023) were the only significant predictors for incompletion of CCRT. The 2-year disease-specific survival (DSS) rate was significantly lower in the low LSMI group (61%) than in the high LSMI group (97%, P = 0.012), whereas there were no differences in the DSS rate between the low and high body mass index groups. The prevalence of sarcopenia in HNC patients receiving CCRT was 27%. Its presence before treatment was a significant predictor of incomplete CCRT and poor DSS rate in HNC patients. A total of 179 patients with pT1N1M0 were identified. Survival analysis showed that both overall survival (OS) and cause-specific survival (CSS) were significantly different between patients treated with and without AC (p < 0.01). Independent risk factors for reduced OS identified in the Cox regression analysis in patients with pT1N1M0 cancer were sex (male sex, hazard ratio [HR] 2.470, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.294-4.718), examined lymph nodes (EN) (EN ≤ 15, HR 2.402; 95% CI 1.329-4.341), and AC (treated without AC, HR 2.554; 95% CI 1.393-4.681), which were also independent risk factors for reduced CSS. In this work, we review the most recent inherent literature in light of key methodological issues and provide a quantitative summary of the results from phase II-III randomized trials of immunotherapic agents combined with chemotherapy in the setting of interest. Hints regarding future directions are also discussed.Europium, terbium, dysprosium, and samarium are the main trivalent lanthanide ions emitting in the visible spectrum. In this work, the potential of these ions for colorimetric applications and colour reproduction was studied. The conversion of spectral data to colour coordinates was undertaken for three sets of Ln complexes composed of different ligands. We showed that Eu is the most sensitive of the visible Ln ions, regarding ligand-induced colour shifts, due to its hypersensitive transition. Further investigation on the spectral bandwidth of the emission detector, on the wavelengths' accuracy, on the instrumental correction function, and on the use of incorrect intensity units confirm that the instrumental correction function is the most important spectrophotometric parameter to take into account in order to produce accurate colour values. Finally, we established and discussed the entire colour range (gamut) that can be generated by combining a red-emitting Eu complex with a green-emitting Tb complex and a blue fluorescent compound. The importance of choosing a proper white point is demonstrated. The potential of using different sets of complexes with different spectral fingerprints in order to obtain metameric colours suitable for anti-counterfeiting is also highlighted. This work answers many questions that could arise during a colorimetric analysis of luminescent probes.
The hand-off process between pediatric anesthesia and intensive care unit (ICU) teams involves the exchange of patient health information and plays a major role in reducing errors and increasing staff satisfaction. Our objectives were to (1) standardize the hand-off process in children's ICUs, and (2) evaluate the provider satisfaction, efficiency and sustainability of the improved hand-off process.
Following multidisciplinary discussions, the hand-off process was standardized for transfers of care between anesthesia-ICU teams. A pre-implementation and two post-implementation (6 months, >2 years) staff satisfaction surveys and audits were conducted to evaluate the success, quality and sustainability of the hand-off process.
There was no difference in the time spent during the sign out process following standardization-median 5 min for pre-implementation versus 5 and 6 min for post-implementation at six months and >2 years, respectively. There was a significant decrease in the number of missed items (airway/ventilation, venous access, medications, and laboratory values pertinent events) post-implementation compared to pre-implementation (
≤ 0.001). In the >2 years follow-up survey, 49.2% of providers felt that the hand-off could be improved versus 78.4% in pre-implementation and 54.2% in the six-month survey (
< 0.001).

When feeding an enzymatically-pretreated and centrifuged rough beer with permanent haze (HP) of 2 or 14 European Brewery Convention unit (EBC-U), its primary clarification under periodic CO2 backflushing yielded a permeate with turbidity of 1.0-1.5 EBC-U at a high permeation flux (2.173 ± 51 or 593 ± 100 L m-2 h-1), **** greater than that typical of powder filters. The final beer was brilliant (HP = 0.57 ± 0.08 EBC-U) with almost the same colloidal stability of the industrial control and an overall log reduction value (~5.0 for the selected beer spoilage bacterium or 7.

The bacterial aetiology is complex, sometimes involving more than one pathogen, playing a major role in the infection prognosis and development of microbial resistance. This study evaluated the current state of the aetiology, clinical and pathological characteristics of DFU in a single diabetes centre in order to provide some specific measures to prevent it. Materials and Methods This retrospective study was conducted on patients with diabetes mellitus (252 individuals diagnosed with DFU) between January 2018-December 2019. All participants were assessed based on their clinical characteristics, including complications of diabetes and pathological and microbiological evaluations. Results The present research revealed that diabetic foot ulcer prevalence was higher in males than in females and higher in type 2 diabetic patients than in type 1 diabetic patients. The patients with diabetic foot ulcer were older, had a higher body mass index (BMI), longer diabetic duration and had more diabetic complications, such as retinopathy, diabetic polyneuropathy and diabetic kidney disease, than patients without diabetic foot ulceration. Conclusions Taking into account all factors involved, including the aetiology and the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of these isolates, planning the suitable treatment options of patients is possible.Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are associated with the fewest number of mutations among known cancers. Eligible subjects rolled over from the placebo-controlled trials (n = 477) or were de novo (n = 2,214) and received 1 to 3 treatments over a maximum of 84 weeks. Safety and efficacy were evaluated at least every 4 weeks up to Week 36 (Treatments 1 and 2) and Week 12 (Treatment 3). Select subjects could be retreated after Week 12 if glabellar lines returned to baseline.
Safety results are reported for 2,691 subjects, of which 882 received a second treatment and 568 a third. Treatment-related adverse events (AEs) occurred in 17.8% of subjects, which were generally mild and resolved. No serious AEs were treatment-related. Eyelid ptosis occurred in 0.9% of treatments. Adverse events were consistent across treatments and no new safety signals were observed.

Omnivores alone account for the highest shifts in time of the numerical abundances of the remaining species, providing computational evidence of the importance of the degree of omnivory in the stabilization of soil biota.Predicting how species will respond to increased environmental temperatures is key to understanding the ecological consequences of global change. The physiological tolerances of a species define its thermal limits, while its thermal affinity is a summary of the environmental temperatures at the localities at which it actually occurs. Experimentally derived thermal limits are known to be related to observed latitudinal ranges in marine species, but accurate range maps from which to derive latitudinal ranges are lacking for many marine species. An alternative approach is to combine widely available data on global occurrences with gridded global temperature datasets to derive measures of species-level "thermal affinity"-that is, measures of the central tendency, variation, and upper and lower bounds of the environmental temperatures at the locations at which a species has been recorded to occur. Here, we test the extent to which such occupancy-derived measures of thermal affinity are related to the known thermal limits of marine species using data on 533 marine species from 24 taxonomic classes and with experimentally derived critical upper temperatures spanning 2-44.5°C. We show that thermal affinity estimates are consistently and positively related to the physiological tolerances of marine species, despite gaps and biases in the source data. Our method allows thermal affinity measures to be rapidly and repeatably estimated for many thousands more marine species, substantially expanding the potential to assess vulnerability of marine communities to warming seas.Scalable assessments of biodiversity are required to successfully and adaptively manage coastal ecosystems. Assessments must account for habitat variations at multiple spatial scales, including the small scales ( less then 100 m) at which biotic and abiotic habitat components structure the distribution of fauna, including fishes. Associated challenges include achieving consistent habitat descriptions and upscaling from in situ-monitored stations to larger scales. We developed a methodology for (a) determining habitat types consistent across scales within large management units, (b) characterizing heterogeneities within each habitat, and (c) predicting habitat from new survey data. It relies on clustering techniques and supervised classification rules and was applied to a set of 3,145 underwater video observations of fish and benthic habitats collected in all reef and lagoon habitats around New Caledonia. A baseline habitat typology was established with five habitat types clearly characterized by abiotic and bs and other ecosystems to characterize and predict local ecological assets for assessments at larger scales.Dispersal affects the spatial distribution and population structure of species. Although overall results showed significantly high relatedness within colonies (suggesting high levels of philopatry in both sexes), local male genetic structure at the 1,050 km distance indicated greater dispersal distance for females from the eastern sector of the breeding range. We focused on the head shape of aquatically foraging snakes as they fulfill several fitness-relevant functions and show a large amount of morphological variability. We used 3D surface scanning and 3D geometric morphometrics to compare the head shape of 62 species in a phylogenetic context. We first tested whether diet specialization and size are drivers of head shape diversification. Next, we tested for many-to-one mapping by comparing the hydrodynamic efficiency of head shape characteristic of the main axes of variation in the dataset. We 3D printed these shapes and measured the forces at play during a frontal strike. Our results show that diet and size explain only a small amount of shape variation. Shapes did not fully functionally converge as more specialized aquatic species evolved a more efficient head shape than others. The shape disparity observed could thus reflect a process of niche specialization.
