    Asthma is a prevalent chronic inflammatory airway disease that is characterised by airway remodelling and airway hyperresponsiveness. Drawing upon Singer and Clair's syndemics model, I focus on synergistic interaction among chronic kidney disease (CKD), diabetes, and COVID-19 in Pakistan. I argue that over 36 million people in Pakistan are standing at a higher risk of contracting COVID-19, developing severe complications, and losing their lives. These two diseases, but several other socio-cultural, economic, and political factors contributing to structured vulnerabilities, would function as confounders. To deal with the critical effects of these syndemics the government needs appropriate policies and their implementation during the pandemic and post-pandemic. However, Pifithrin-α (p53 inhibitor) and N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) could reduce cell apoptosis, lung structural damage and oxidative stress, accelerate the expression of Bcl-2, while suppressing the expression of Bax, total caspase-3 and cleaved caspase-3.     Eosinophilic Otitis Media (EOM) is a relatively newly defined entity of recurrent and resistant otitis media.

    To perform a systematic review of otologic manifestations, diagnosis and management of eosinophilic otitis media (EOM).

    393 patients diagnosed with EOM of 26 studies met inclusion criteria and were assessed for demographics, otologic manifestations, diagnostic criteria fulfilled, and medical and surgical treatments.

    Most common otologic manifestations were hearing loss (65%), otitis media with effusion (16%), tympanic membrane perforation (13%), and otorrhea (13%). 93% had a predominantly eosinophilic middle ear effusion, 95% had asthma, 85% had a highly viscous middle ear effusion, 71% had nasal polyposis, and 58% had resistance to conventional treatment. For treatment, 39% received intratympanic steroid injections, 33% received systemic steroids, 17% received steroid ear drops and 13% received a biological agent. 39% of patients underwent a surgical intervention with 26% receiving functional endoscopic sinus surgery and 18% receiving myringotomy with tube insertion. Success rates were highest with use of intratympanic steroids (45%), systemic steroids (26%), and biological agents (58%).

    Intratympanic steroids show the most efficacy in treating EOM, and aggressive optimization of asthma may be beneficial in resolving otologic symptoms. Surgery should be reserved for refractory cases and complications.

Eighteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with a variety of stakeholders including Latinx cancer survivors (n = 8), their family caregivers (n = 5), and cancer care providers (n = 5). Data were analyzed thematically to describe occupational participation. Latinx families lived in political, economic, language, and social contexts that facilitated and hindered their well-being. Survivors simultaneously experienced occupational deprivation and posttraumatic growth. To promote occupational justice, occupational therapy practitioners and researchers are called to partner with Latinx survivors and their families to facilitate skills needed for everyday participation.

Autophagy is an intracellular pathway involved in nutrient recycling. Recently, autophagy has been reported to play a role in regulating host cytokine response to several viruses, including vesicular stomatitis virus and human immunodeficiency virus. Previous in vivo studies using mouse model has shown that inhibition of autophagy reduces RSV-induced cytokine production. However, the role of autophagy in modulating RSV-induced cytokine response in human cells has not been reported. We investigated the role of autophagy in regulating the production of the cytokines C-X-C motif ligand 8 (CXCL8) and C-C motif ligand 5 (CCL5), in RSV-infected human bronchial epithelium BEAS-2B cells. Fluorescent microscopic analysis showed that RSV infection induced autophagosome formation in BEAS-2B cells. This autophagy inducing ability of RSV was further confirmed by flow cytometry. The effects of pharmacological inhibition of autophagy by SAR405 or chloroquine on cell death and cytokine release were quantified using lactate dehydrogenase assay and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), respectively. We found that SAR405 or chloroquine did not cause cell death. Importantly, ELISA analysis showed that pharmacological inhibition of autophagy by SAR405 or chloroquine did not affect the productions of both CXCL5 and CXCL8. In contrast to the previous studies using mouse model, our data suggest that pharmacological inhibition of autophagy may not be a suitable strategy in controlling RSV-induced airway inflammation.
    To assess whether preoperative levels of physical activity predict the incidence of post-operative complications following anatomical lung resection.

    Levels of physical activity (daily steps) were measured for 15 consecutive days using pedometers in 90 consecutive patients (prior to admission). Outcomes measured were cardiac and respiratory complications, length of stay, and 30-day re-admission rate.

    A total of 78 patients' datasets were analysed (12 patients were excluded due to non-compliance). Based on steps performed they were divided into quartiles; 1 (low physical activity) to 4 (high physical activity). There were no significant differences in age, smoking history, COPD, BMI, percentage predicted FEV1 and KCO and cardiovascular risk factors between the groups. There were significantly fewer total complications in quartiles 3 and 4 (high physical activity) compared to quartiles 1 and 2 (low physical activity) (8 vs 22;
    = .01). There was a trend (
    > .05) towards shorter hospital length of stay in quartiles 3 and 4 (median values of 4 and 5 days, respectively) compared to quartiles 1 and 2 (6 days for both groups).

    Preoperative physical activity can help to predict postoperative outcome and can be used to stratify risk of postoperative complications and to monitor impact of preoperative interventions, ultimately improving short term outcomes.

The aim of this study was to examine WQ-3810 and its derivatives WQ-3334 and WQ-4065 as the new drug candidate for wild-type Salmonella and that carrying QnrB19. Materials and Methods The half maximal inhibitory concentrations (IC50s) of WQ-3810, WQ-3334 (Br atom in place of methyl group at R8), and WQ-4065 (6-ethylamino-3,5-difluoropyridine-2-yl in place of 6-amino-3,5-difluoropyridine-2-yl group at R1) in the presence or absence of QnrB19 were assessed by in vitro DNA supercoiling assay utilizing recombinant DNA gyrase and QnrB19. Results IC50s of WQ-3810, WQ-3334, and WQ-4065 against Salmonella DNA gyrase were 0.031 ± 0.003, 0.068 ± 0.016, and 0.72 ± 0.39 μg/mL, respectively, while QnrB19 increased IC50s of WQ-3810, WQ-3334, and WQ-4065 to 0.44 ± 0.05, 0.92 ± 0.34, and 9.16 ± 2.21 μg/mL, respectively. Conclusion WQ-3810 and WQ-3334 showed stronger inhibitory activity against Salmonella Typhimurium DNA gyrases than WQ-4065 even in the presence of QnrB19. The results suggest that 6-amino-3,5-difluoropyridine-2-yl group at R1 is playing an important role and WQ-3810 and WQ-3334 to be good candidates for Salmonella carrying QnrB19.

  • ABA-independent transcriptional regulatory systems and ABA-responsive regulation function in drought-responsive gene expression. DEHYDRATION RESPONSIVE ELEMENT (DRE) is an important cis-acting element in ABA-independent transcription, whereas ABA-RESPONSIVE ELEMENT (ABRE) cis-acting element functions in ABA-responsive transcription. In this review article, we summarize recent advances in research on cellular and molecular drought stress responses and focus on phosphorylation signaling and transcription networks in Arabidopsis and crops. We also highlight gene networks of transcriptional regulation through two major regulatory pathways, ABA-dependent and ABA-independent pathways, that ABA-responsive subclass III SnRK2s and ABA-unresponsive subclass I SnRK2s mediate, respectively. MLST analyses identified six different Sequence Types (ST) that clustered in two monophyletic groups specific for Leptospirainterrogans, and L. borgpetersenii. This study provided about the prevalence of leptospires in wild mammals in Sardinia, and increased our knowledge of this pathogen on the island. In this review article, we summarize recent advances in research on cellular and molecular drought stress responses and focus on phosphorylation signaling and transcription networks in Arabidopsis and crops. We also highlight gene networks of transcriptional regulation through two major regulatory pathways, ABA-dependent and ABA-independent pathways, that ABA-responsive subclass III SnRK2s and ABA-unresponsive subclass I SnRK2s mediate, respectively. Silencing of SOX2 or CCAT1 inhibited HepG2 cell proliferation, migration, and invasion as well as decreased the expression of CCAT1 and EGFR. CCAT1 silencing reduced EGFR expression, but EGFR expression was increased in HCC tissues and HepG2 cells, which promoted proliferation, migration, and invasion in vitro. EGFR upregulated miR-222-5p, leading to downregulation of CYLD. miR-222-5p inhibition or CYLD overexpression repressed cell functions in HepG2 cells. We examined 198 glycolysis-related genes that showed differential expression in metastatic and non-metastatic osteosarcoma samples in the TARGET database, and identified three genes (P4HA1, ABCB6, and STC2) for the establishment of a risk signature. Based on the signature, patients in the high-risk group had poor outcomes. An independent Gene Expression Omnibus database GSE21257 was selected as the validation cohort. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was performed and the accuracy of predicting the 1- and 3-year survival rates was shown by the areas under the curve. The results were 0.884 and 0.790 in the TARGET database, and 0.740 and 0.759 in the GSE21257, respectively. Furthermore, we applied ESTIMATE algorithm and performed single sample gene set enrichment analysis to compare tumor immunity between high- and low-risk groups. We found that the low-risk group had higher immune scores and immune infiltration levels than the high-risk group.     Hamstring muscle architecture may be associated with sprint performance and the risk of sustaining a muscle injury, both of which increase during puberty. In this study, we investigated the m. biceps femoris long head (BFlh) cross-sectional area (ACSA), fascicle length (FL) and pennation angle (PA), and sprint performance as well as their relationship in under 13 to 15 youth soccer players.

    We measured 85 players in under-13 (n = 29, age = 12.5 [0.1]y, height = 155.3 [6.2]cm, weight = 43.9 [7.6]kg), under-14 (n = 25, age = 13.5 [0.3]y, height = 160.6 [7.7]cm, weight = 47.0 [6.8]kg), and under-15 (n = 31, age = 14.4 [0.3]y, height = 170.0 [7.7]cm, weight = 58.1 [8.8]kg) teams. We used ultrasound to measure BFlh ACSA, FL and PA, and sprint tests to assess 10- and 30-m sprint time, maximal velocity (vmax), and maximal acceleration (αmax). We calculated Pearson r to assess the relationship between sprint ability and architectural parameters.

    All muscle architectural parameters increased from the under-13 to the under-15 age group (BFlh ACSA = 37%, BFlh FL = 11%, BFlh PA = 8%). All sprint performance parameters improved from the under-13 to under-15 age categories (30-m time = 7%, 10-m time = 4%, vmax = 9%, αmax = 7%). Studies in male rodents have built upon the discovery of long-term potentiation (LTP), and acceptance of this activity-dependent increase in synaptic strength as a mechanism of encoding, to identify synaptic receptors and signaling activities that coordinate the activity-dependent remodeling of the subsynaptic actin cytoskeleton that is critical for enduring potentiation and memory. These molecular substrates together with other features of LTP, as characterized in males, have provided an explanation for a range of memory phenomena including multiple stages of consolidation, the efficacy of spaced training, and the location of engrams at the level of individual synapses. In the present report, we summarize these findings and describe more recent results from our laboratories showing that in females the same actin regulatory mechanisms are required for hippocampal LTP and memory but, in females only, the engagement of both modulatory receptors such as TrkB and synaptic signaling intermediaries including Src and ERK1/2 requires neuron-derived estrogen and signaling through membrane-associated estrogen receptor α (ERα). Moreover, in association with the additional ERα involvement, females exhibit a higher threshold for hippocampal LTP and spatial learning. We illustrate 2 cases of NUT carcinoma, one located in the lung, which closely resembled a neuroendocrine carcinoma, and the other one with assumed lung origin demonstrating metastatic dissemination with diffuse bone involvement, which was clinically first suspected to be a hematological malignancy. Due to its undifferentiated nature, NUT carcinoma may be confused with many entities. NUT immunohistochemistry is considered to be sufficient for the diagnosis. Fluorescence in-situ hybridization analysis and next-generation sequencing are currently used to confirm the diagnosis.The waterjet debridement is now a standard practice in contaminated or infected diabetic lower extremity wounds. The bacterial clearance of the waterjet debridement remains an important parameter that should be predicted in this application. Patients' etiology and pathogen diagnosis were established as diabetic lower extremity contaminated wound. The high-power waterjet (Versajet™, Smith-Nephew) was used in the treatment group and conventional surgical methods were used in the control group. The bacteriological swab samples were collected before and after the debridement. The results of bacterial culture were analyzed. A total of 74 patients were included in our study, 40 patients in the treatment group and 34 in the control group. Patient characteristics were well matched. The preoperative bacteriological swab samples of the 2 groups showed no significant difference between each other with a P value of .1022. The culture result of postoperative bacteriological swab samples in the treatment group was significantly lower than control with a P value of .0099. The odds of bacterial clearance were greater in the treatment group than in the control group (odds ratio, 5.139; 95% confidence interval, 1.386-18.41). Intelligent Cardiovascular Disease Prediction Empowered with Gradient Descent Optimization model produces the optimal results among under consideration classification algorithms. 98.54 % accuracy has been achieved by the GDO based model while performance evaluation it. 99.43% sensitivity (recall) and 97.76% precision have also been recorded.     A deficit in Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN), acknowledged to be linked to dyslexia, has rarely been investigated as a potential explanation of the reading difficulties that children with intellectual disability (ID) often face. The existing studies mainly focused on adolescent or adults with ID matched to typically developing (TD) children on verbal mental age, or used a single RAN task.

    The aim of this study was to compare the RAN pattern and skills of children with ID and low reading skills to the ones of TD children with matched reading skills.

Dietary treatments constituted grass hay fed ad libitum to all treatments plus supplemented with mixed diet of 48% wheat bran, 15% molasses, 35% cotton seed cake, 1% salt and 1% limestone (T1); 43% wheat bran, 20% sorghum grain, 35% noug seed cake, 1% salt and 1% limestone (T2) and 47% wheat bran, 16% molasses, 35% sesame seed cake, 1% salt and 1% limestone (T3). At the end of the experimental period, six lambs randomly chosen from each treatment were slaughtered to determine the carcass traits and meat quality. Results showed that most carcass and meat traits were affected by diets. Average daily gain (ADG) was higher (P 0.05) while intramuscular fat was higher in T3 (4.18%) than T2 (3.87%) and T1 (3.79%) (P less then 0.01). The study indicated that carcass traits and meat quality could be modulated through dietary manipulation.Although mixed methods research proves significant in understanding complex social phenomenon, inadequate research has explored its utility in heat exposure studies. The convergent mixed methods analysis comprising 320 surveys and two focus group interviews were used to evaluate the social impacts of occupational heat stress on Ghanaian mineworkers to enlighten policy choices for the purpose of complementarity. The study contributes to mixed methods study by affirming the practical use of between-method triangulation and complementarity. The merged quantitative and qualitative results also showed adequate corroboration and complementarity between both data, to illustrate the social impacts of work-related heat stress on mining workers as heat-related comorbidity, productive capacity loss, anxiety, slow pace of work, and inadequate social well-being. The mixed methods results would inform policy options on the health and safety of work settings, managing occupational heat stress, and adaptation guidelines in the mining industry.The COVID-19 pandemic has interrupted the education of millions of students across the world. Finding an acceptable optimal solution among multiple solutions for a specific problem is known as optimization. Different machine learning algorithms have been applied as Support Machine Vector (SVM), K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Naïve Bayes (NB), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Random Forest (RF), and Gradient Descent Optimization (GDO). Intelligent Cardiovascular Disease Prediction Empowered with Gradient Descent Optimization model produces the optimal results among under consideration classification algorithms. 98.54 % accuracy has been achieved by the GDO based model while performance evaluation it. 99.43% sensitivity (recall) and 97.76% precision have also been recorded. From the prediction results of the system, it's satisfactory to utilize it for cardiovascular disease diagnosis. The proposed system will be helpful for the analysis of cardiovascular disease. These findings were consistent with irritation fibroma of hard palate, a rare entity, which should be considered as a possible diagnosis for tumors of the area by every physician.The exfoliation of layered materials into two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors creates new structural domains, for example, basal planes, defect-rich in-planes, and edge sites. In this study, a custom-designed microdroplet cell-based spatially resolved PEC approach was employed to identify the structural parts and to measure the PEC activity of the mechanically exfoliated MoSe2 and WSe2 nanosheets for bulk, few-layer, and monolayer specimens. The PEC performance decreased with the decreasing thickness of nanoflakes, and the relative PEC activity (photo/total current) reduced by introducing more defects to the 2D flakes 1-3% loss was found for in-plane defects and 30-40% for edge defects. While edge sites act as charge carrier recombination centers, their electrocatalytic activity is higher than that of the basal planes. Although chest radiograph and following CT scan has given an incidental diagnosis of right hydropneumothorax, treatment with drainages and video-assisted thorascopic surgery, instead, has allowed us to formulate correct diagnosis of cysts in LAM.We introduce wFLFM, an approach that enhances the resolution of Fourier light-field microscopy (FLFM) through a hybrid wide-field image. The system exploits the intrinsic compatibility of image formation between the on-axis FLFM elemental image and the wide-field image, allowing for minimal instrumental and computational complexity. The numerical and experimental results of wFLFM present a two- to three-fold improvement in the lateral resolution without compromising the 3D imaging capability in comparison with conventional FLFM.

  • According to mitochondrial cytb sequences, both species are reciprocally monophyletic relative to other species of the A. adloffi species group, and present positive barcoding gap values. Interestingly, both new species form a grade that is closely related to Austrolebias aff. minuano 1, an undescribed species that occurs at the opposite margin of the Laguna dos Patos. Among the other evaluated species, A. bagual, A. aff. minuano 1, A. nigrofasciatus, A. pelotapes, A. pongondo, A. arachan, and A. viarius also revealed to be reciprocally monophyletic, whereas A. minuano and A. adloffi revealed to be paraphyletic in regard to A. charrua and A. aff. minuano 2, respectively, and A. nachtigalli is subdivided in two clades, one of which including A. reicherti, which points to the need of a taxonomic review of the group. In addition, we discussed the conservation status of the new species, corrected the type locality of A. pongondo, and provided a dichotomous identification key of the A. adloffi species group.Heteragrion gorbi sp. nov. These species were collected in waterbodies located along the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB) and the eastern slope of the country Caecidotea buzwilsoni sp. nov., Caecidotea chicoensis sp. nov., Caecidotea alvarezi sp. nov., Caecidotea mintzita sp. nov., Caecidotea zacapuensis sp. nov., and one additional species Caecidotea villalobosi sp. nov. is described from the Papaloapan basin at the Atlantic Slope of Mexico. The taxonomic treatment for each species includes a detailed description, figures of characters of diagnostic importance and comments. We also provide an updated map of Caecidotea records in Mexico. This work substantially increases the number of epigean Caecidotea known to occur in Mexico to 11 species, a new total of 99 species described to North America.The genus Toxicodryas, historically included with the renowned Australasian cat-eyed snakes of the colubrid genus Boiga, currently includes two widespread species (T. blandingii and T. pulverulenta) in western, central, and eastern Africa. We leverage findings from a recent phylogenomic and historical demographic analysis of this genus (based on 2848-4471 Rad-seq loci from across the genome), with robust sampling from throughout the ranges of both species, to define two additional taxonomic units, with species boundaries corresponding to river barriers. Additional morphometric data from scores of examined museum specimens and literature records bolster the recognition of these two new cryptic species. We hypothesize that T. blandingii occurs west of the confluence of the Congo and Ubangi rivers, whereas a cryptic new species that is found east of this biogeographic barrier has significantly higher numbers of ventral scale counts in both sexes, additional significant differences in several scale counts, and lower venom toxicity.     According to mitochondrial cytb sequences, both species are reciprocally monophyletic relative to other species of the A. adloffi species group, and present positive barcoding gap values. Interestingly, both new species form a grade that is closely related to Austrolebias aff. minuano 1, an undescribed species that occurs at the opposite margin of the Laguna dos Patos. Among the other evaluated species, A. bagual, A. aff. minuano 1, A. nigrofasciatus, A. pelotapes, A. pongondo, A. arachan, and A. viarius also revealed to be reciprocally monophyletic, whereas A. minuano and A. adloffi revealed to be paraphyletic in regard to A. charrua and A. aff. minuano 2, respectively, and A. nachtigalli is subdivided in two clades, one of which including A. reicherti, which points to the need of a taxonomic review of the group. The taxonomic treatment for each species includes a detailed description, figures of characters of diagnostic importance and comments. We also provide an updated map of Caecidotea records in Mexico. This work substantially increases the number of epigean Caecidotea known to occur in Mexico to 11 species, a new total of 99 species described to North America.The genus Toxicodryas, historically included with the renowned Australasian cat-eyed snakes of the colubrid genus Boiga, currently includes two widespread species (T. blandingii and T. pulverulenta) in western, central, and eastern Africa. We leverage findings from a recent phylogenomic and historical demographic analysis of this genus (based on 2848-4471 Rad-seq loci from across the genome), with robust sampling from throughout the ranges of both species, to define two additional taxonomic units, with species boundaries corresponding to river barriers. Additional morphometric data from scores of examined museum specimens and literature records bolster the recognition of these two new cryptic species. We hypothesize that T. blandingii occurs west of the confluence of the Congo and Ubangi rivers, whereas a cryptic new species that is found east of this biogeographic barrier has significantly higher numbers of ventral scale counts in both sexes, additional significant differences in several scale counts, and lower venom toxicity.
