  • The existence of crosstalk between quorum sensing systems limits their application in a complex environment. In this study, two completely orthogonal quorum sensing systems with self-produced autoinducers were built in one cell to enable the systems to be signal orthogonal and promoter orthogonal to each other. The systems were designed on the basis of the las system from Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the tra system from Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Both were optimized with respect to the orthogonality of signals and promoters by using a series of synthetic biology strategies and high-throughput screening. To demonstrate the utility of CRAGE-Duet, we created a set of strains from the plant-growth-promoting rhizobacterium Pseudomonas simiae WCS417r that expressed various fluorescence marker genes. The selected synthetic regulatory parts had good stability in both nutrient-rich and minimal media. The precise combinatorial modulation of galP (GalP = galactose permease) and glk (Glk = glucokinase) from Escherichia coli by using three synthetic regulatory parts with different strengths was confirmed in a phosphoenolpyruvatecarbohydrate phosphotransferase system with inactive V. natriegens strain to alter the glucose transport. To address the current limited availability of these compounds, we herein demonstrate the production of benzopyran, furanocoumarins, and pyranocoumarins in Streptomyces xiamenensis by employing prenyltransferases and two substrate-promiscuous enzymes, XimD and XimE. To avoid the degradation in S. xiamenensis, furanocoumarins and pyranocoumarins were also successfully produced in Escherichia coli. The production of linear furanocoumarins (marmesin) and angular pyranocoumarins (decursinol) reached 3.6 and 3.7 mg/L in shake flasks, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the microbial production of the plant metabolites furanocoumarins and pyranocoumarins. Our study complements the missing link in the biosynthesis of pyranocoumarins by leveraging the catalytic promiscuity of microbial enzymes.Microbial contamination, especially in large-scale processes, is partly a life-or-death issue for industrial fermentation. Therefore, the aim of this research was to create an antimicrobial contamination system in Bacillus subtilis 168 (an ideal acetoin producer for its safety and acetoin synthesis potential). First, introduction of the formamidase (FmdA) from Helicobacter pylori and the phosphite dehydrogenase (PtxD) from Pseudomonas stutzeri enabled the engineered Bacillus subtilis to simultaneously assimilate formamide and phosphite as nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) sources. Thus, the engineered B. subtilis became the dominant population in a potentially contaminated system, while contaminated microbes were starved of key nutrients. Second, stepwise metabolic engineering via chromosome-based overexpression of the relevant glycolysis and acetoin biosynthesis genes led to a 1.12-fold increment in acetoin titer compared with the starting host. Finally, with our best acetoin producer, 25.56 g/L acetoin was synthesized in the fed-batch fermentation, with a productivity of 0.

  • Dysregulated expression of MicroRNAs (miRNAs) plays substantial role in the initiation and progression of both diabetes and periodontitis. The aim of the present study was to validate four miRNAs in saliva as potential predictive biomarkers of periodontal disease among patients with and without diabetes mellitus (DM). MiRNAs were extracted from the saliva of 24 adult subjects with DM and 29 healthy controls. Each group was subdivided into periodontally healthy or having periodontitis. In silico analysis identified 4 miRNAs (miRNA 155, 146 a/b and 203) as immune modulators. The expression of miRNAs-146a/b, 155, and 203 was tested using quantitative PCR. The expression levels in the study groups were compared to explore the effect of diabetes on periodontal status and vice versa. In our cohort, the four miRNAs expression were higher in patients with periodontitis and/or diabetes. miRNA-155 was the most reliable predictors of periodontitis among non-diabetics with an optimum cut-off value of less then 8.97 with accuracy = 82.6%. MiRNA 146a, on the other hand, was the only reliable predictor of periodontitis among subjects with diabetes with optimum cut-off value of ≥11.04 with accuracy = 86.1%. The results of the present study concluded that MiRNA-146a and miRNA155 in saliva provide reliable, non-invasive, diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers that can be used to monitor periodontal health status among diabetic and non-diabetic patients.Procyandin A2 (PCA2) is a polyphenolic compound which is isolated from grape seeds. It has been reported that PCA2 exhibits antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects, but its molecular mechanism is still poorly understood. This study tests the hypothesis that PCA2 suppresses lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation and oxidative stress through targeting the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathways in RAW264.7 cells. PCA2 (20, 40, 80 μM) exhibited no significant cytotoxicity in RAW264.7 cells and showed an inhibitory effect on an LPS-induced nitrite level. Pro-inflammatory cytokines like tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), nitric oxide (NO), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were suppressed by PCA2 with a concentration range of 0-80 μM. The mRNA levels of TNF-α and IL-6 were inhibited by PCA2 (80 μM). The hallmark-protein expression of the NF-κB (p-IKKα/β, p-IκBα, and p-p65) and MAPK (p-p38, p-JNK, and p-ERK) pathways were decreased by PCA2 in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. In addition, immunofluorescence results indicated that PCA2 (80 μM) promoted the translocation of NF-κB/p65 from the cytoplasm into the nucleus. PCA2 upregulated the expressions of Nrf2 and HO-1 and downregulated the expression of Keap-1. Simultaneously, PCA2 (80 μM) reversed LPS-induced Nrf2 translocation from the nucleus into the cytoplasm. Collectively, PCA2 protect cells against the damage from inflammation and oxidative injury, which suggest a potential therapeutic strategy for inflammatory and oxidative stress through targeting NF-κB, MAPK, and Nrf2 pathways in RAW264.7 cells.The continuous flow intersection [CFI) is an unconventional intersection design which has been used in many cities all over the world. However, as an important parameter for the geometric design, signal timing, and operation evaluation, the saturation flow rate at CFI has not been carefully examined. In this paper, a saturation flow rate adjustment model for CFI intersections is established based on field data under the calculation framework of the HCM2016. Four movements related with CFI, namely the left-turn at the CFI approach, through movement at the CFI approach, left-turn at the pre-signal, and exit movement at the pre-signal, are discussed. The proposed model is validated and the relative error is less than 10%. The treatments to mitigate the negative impact on the saturation flow rate at the CFI are also recommended. The results show the saturation flow rate of the first three movements are decreased due to the CFI control. For the left-turn, through movement, and left-turn at the pre-signal, the degree of the reduction of the saturation flow rate are mainly related to the heavy vehicle ratio, the proportion of lane changing vehicles, and the length of displaced left-turn lanes, respectively.In 2014, the EU funded a four-year European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Action to address the topic of childbirth. The Action used inter and trans-disciplinary approaches to address birth from multiple perspectives and drew on complexity theory and the concept of salutogenesis (wellbeing). Self-collection of diagnostic specimens at home offers an avenue to allow people to test for SARS-CoV-2 infection or immune response without traveling to a clinic or laboratory. Before this study, survey respondents indicated willingness to self-collect specimens for COVID-related tests, but hypothetical willingness can differ from post-collection acceptability after participants collect specimens.

    153 US adults were enrolled in a study of the willingness and feasibility of patients to self-collect three diagnostic specimens (saliva, oropharyngeal swab (OPS) and dried blood spot (DBS) card) while observed by a clinician through a telehealth session. After the specimens were collected, 148 participants participated in a survey about the acceptability of the collection, packing and shipping process, and their confidence in the samples collected for COVID-related laboratory testing.

    A large majority of participants (>84%) reported that collecting, packing and shipping of saliva, OPS, and DBS specimens were acceptable.

Self-collection of diagnostic specimens at home offers an avenue to allow people to test for SARS-CoV-2 infection or immune response without traveling to a clinic or laboratory. Before this study, survey respondents indicated willingness to self-collect specimens for COVID-related tests, but hypothetical willingness can differ from post-collection acceptability after participants collect specimens.

    153 US adults were enrolled in a study of the willingness and feasibility of patients to self-collect three diagnostic specimens (saliva, oropharyngeal swab (OPS) and dried blood spot (DBS) card) while observed by a clinician through a telehealth session. After the specimens were collected, 148 participants participated in a survey about the acceptability of the collection, packing and shipping process, and their confidence in the samples collected for COVID-related laboratory testing.

    A large majority of participants (>84%) reported that collecting, packing and shipping of saliva, OPS, and DBS specimens were acceptable.
    Dysregulated expression of MicroRNAs (miRNAs) plays substantial role in the initiation and progression of both diabetes and periodontitis. The aim of the present study was to validate four miRNAs in saliva as potential predictive biomarkers of periodontal disease among patients with and without diabetes mellitus (DM). MiRNAs were extracted from the saliva of 24 adult subjects with DM and 29 healthy controls. Each group was subdivided into periodontally healthy or having periodontitis. In silico analysis identified 4 miRNAs (miRNA 155, 146 a/b and 203) as immune modulators. The expression of miRNAs-146a/b, 155, and 203 was tested using quantitative PCR. The expression levels in the study groups were compared to explore the effect of diabetes on periodontal status and vice versa. In our cohort, the four miRNAs expression were higher in patients with periodontitis and/or diabetes. miRNA-155 was the most reliable predictors of periodontitis among non-diabetics with an optimum cut-off value of less then 8.97 with accuracy = 82.6%. MiRNA 146a, on the other hand, was the only reliable predictor of periodontitis among subjects with diabetes with optimum cut-off value of ≥11.04 with accuracy = 86.1%. The results of the present study concluded that MiRNA-146a and miRNA155 in saliva provide reliable, non-invasive, diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers that can be used to monitor periodontal health status among diabetic and non-diabetic patients.Procyandin A2 (PCA2) is a polyphenolic compound which is isolated from grape seeds. It has been reported that PCA2 exhibits antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects, but its molecular mechanism is still poorly understood. This study tests the hypothesis that PCA2 suppresses lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation and oxidative stress through targeting the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathways in RAW264.7 cells. PCA2 (20, 40, 80 μM) exhibited no significant cytotoxicity in RAW264.7 cells and showed an inhibitory effect on an LPS-induced nitrite level. Pro-inflammatory cytokines like tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), nitric oxide (NO), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were suppressed by PCA2 with a concentration range of 0-80 μM. The mRNA levels of TNF-α and IL-6 were inhibited by PCA2 (80 μM). After the safety of TL herbal tea was established, 10 more subjects took TL 12 grams daily. Clinical and biochemical tests were assessed at baseline and at 2 weeks.

  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic human pathogen and a leading cause of nosocomial infections. Due to its high intrinsic and adaptive resistance to antibiotics, infections caused by this organism are difficult to treat and new therapeutic options are urgently needed. Novel peptidomimetic antibiotics that target outer membrane (OM) proteins have shown great promise for the treatment of P. aeruginosa infections. Here, we have performed genome-wide mutant fitness profiling using transposon sequencing (Tn-Seq) to identify resistance determinants against the recently described peptidomimetics L27-11, compounds 3 and 4, as well as polymyxin B2 (PMB) and colistin (COL). We identified a set of 13 core genes that affected resistance to all tested antibiotics, many of which encode enzymes involved in the modification of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or control their expression. We also identified fitness determinants that are specific for antibiotics with similar structures that may indicate differences in their modes of action. These results provide new insights into resistance mechanisms against these peptide antibiotics, which will be important for future clinical development and efforts to further improve their potency.The inappropriate use of antibiotics and an inadequate control of infections have led to the emergence of resistant strains which represent a major threat to public health and the global economy. In this study, high throughput sequencing of the 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene (amplicon sequencing) and metagenomics were used to analyze the composition and function variations of gut microbiota communities between captive and wild Amur tiger populations based on total 35 fecal samples (13 from captive tigers and 22 from wild tigers). Our results showed that captive Amur tigers have higher alpha diversity in gut microbiota, but that the average unweighted UniFrac distance of bacterial taxa among wild Amur tigers was **** larger.     Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic human pathogen and a leading cause of nosocomial infections. Due to its high intrinsic and adaptive resistance to antibiotics, infections caused by this organism are difficult to treat and new therapeutic options are urgently needed. Novel peptidomimetic antibiotics that target outer membrane (OM) proteins have shown great promise for the treatment of P. aeruginosa infections. Here, we have performed genome-wide mutant fitness profiling using transposon sequencing (Tn-Seq) to identify resistance determinants against the recently described peptidomimetics L27-11, compounds 3 and 4, as well as polymyxin B2 (PMB) and colistin (COL). We identified a set of 13 core genes that affected resistance to all tested antibiotics, many of which encode enzymes involved in the modification of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or control their expression. We also identified fitness determinants that are specific for antibiotics with similar structures that may indicate differences in their modes of action.   • Antimicrobial resistance is one of our most serious health threats. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), effecter molecules of innate immune system, can defend host organisms against microbes and most have shown a lowered likelihood for bacteria to form resistance compared to many conventional drugs. Thus, AMPs are gaining popularity as better substitute to antibiotics. To aid researchers in novel AMPs discovery, we design computational approaches to screen promising candidates.

    In this work, we design a deep learning model that can learn amino acid embedding patterns, automatically extract sequence features, and fuse heterogeneous information. Results show that the proposed model outperforms state-of-the-art methods on recognition of AMPs. By visualizing data in some layers of the model, we overcome the black-box nature of deep learning, explain the working mechanism of the model, and find some import motifs in sequences.

    Waterlogging is one of the most serious abiotic stresses affecting wheat-growing regions in China. Considerable differences in waterlogging tolerance have been found among different wheat varieties, and the mechanisms governing the waterlogging tolerance of wheat seeds during germination have not been elucidated.

    The results showed no significant difference between the germination rate of 'Bainong 207' (BN207) (after 72 h of waterlogging treatment) and that of the control seeds. However, the degree of emulsification and the degradation rate of endosperm cells under waterlogging stress were higher than those obtained with the control treatment, and the number of amyloplasts in the endosperm was significantly reduced by waterlogging. Transcriptomic data were obtained from seed samples (a total of 18 samples) of three wheat varieties, 'Zhoumai 22' (ZM22), BN207 and 'Bainong 607' (BN607), subjected to the waterlogging and control treatments. A comprehensive analysis identified a total of 2775 differentially ewaterlogging tolerance of this cultivar.

In East Asia, the Sichuan Basin and surrounding mountains constitute an understudied region that exhibits a "ring" of high species richness overlapping the eastern edge of the global biodiversity hotspot Mountains of Southwest China. We examine the distributional history and genetic diversification of the Emei mustache toad Leptobrachium boringii, a typical "ring" element characterized by disjunct ranges in the mountains, by integrating time-calibrated gene tree, genetic variability, individual-level clustering, inference of population splitting and mixing from allele frequencies, and paleoclimatic suitability modeling.

    The results reveal extensive range dynamics, including secondary contact after long-term isolation via westward dispersal accompanied by variability loss. They allow the proposal of a model that combines a large variation. The model for the formation of disjunct ranges may apply to many other taxa isolated in the mountains surrounding the Sichuan Basin.   • Fertility sparing surgery for patients with early stage ovarian clear cell carcinoma is controversial. We aimed to investigate the impact of fertility sparing surgery on the oncologic outcomes of young patients with stage I ovarian clear cell carcinoma.

    The National Cancer Database was accessed and patients with pathological stage IA or IC ovarian clear cell carcinoma, aged
    45 years, were selected. Based on site specific surgery codes, patients who underwent fertility sparing or radical surgery were identified. Overall survival was evaluated following generation of Kaplan-Meier curves, and compared with the log rank test. Multivariate Cox analysis was performed to control for possible confounders. A systematic review of literature of the Pubmed, EMBASE and Web of Science databases was also performed to summarize all reported cases.

    A total of 57 (35.8%) and 102 (64.2%) patients underwent fertility sparing and radical surgery. There was no difference in overall survival between patients who had fertility sparing and radical surgery (p=0.92); 5 year overall survival rates were 89% and 87.9%, respectively. After controlling for the performance of lymphadenectomy and disease substage, fertility sparing surgery was not associated with worse survival (hazard ratio 0.83, 95% confidence interval 0.30 to 2.32). A systematic review of the literature identified 132 patients with stage I disease who underwent fertility sparing surgery; a total of 20 patients (15.2%) experienced a relapse at a median of 18 months from surgery.

Pairwise comparison was used to determine temporal trends and Cox hazards tests with Bonferroni correction were used to determine overall survival.

    To conduct a landscape assessment of public knowledge of cardiovascular disease risk factors and acute myocardial infarction symptoms, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) awareness and training in three underserved communities in Brazil.

    A cross-sectional, population-based survey of non-institutionalised adults age 30 or greater was conducted in three municipalities in Eastern Brazil. Data were analysed as survey-weighted percentages of the sampled populations.

    3035 surveys were completed. Overall, one-third of respondents was unable to identify at least one cardiovascular disease risk factor and 25% unable to identify at least one myocardial infarction symptom. A minority of respondents had received training in CPR or were able to identify an AED. Low levels of education and low socioeconomic status were consistent predictors of lower knowledge levels of cardiovascular disease risk factors, acute coronary syndrome symptoms and CPR and AED use.

    Analysing the routine practice data of British Heart Foundation National Audit of Cardiac Rehabilitation between April 2012 and March 2018, an observational study was conducted. Patients with new-onset post-cardiac event depressive symptoms and no previous documented history of depression constituted the study population.

    The study identified specific baseline comorbid conditions of patients with new-onset depressive symptoms including angina, diabetes, stroke, emphysema and chronic **** problems that were determinants of poorer mental health outcomes (HADS) following CR. Higher total number of comorbidities, increased weight, physical inactivity, smoking, presence of heart failure and being single were other determinants of a negative change in depression.   • Fertility sparing surgery for patients with early stage ovarian clear cell carcinoma is controversial. We aimed to investigate the impact of fertility sparing surgery on the oncologic outcomes of young patients with stage I ovarian clear cell carcinoma.

    The National Cancer Database was accessed and patients with pathological stage IA or IC ovarian clear cell carcinoma, aged
    45 years, were selected. Based on site specific surgery codes, patients who underwent fertility sparing or radical surgery were identified. Overall survival was evaluated following generation of Kaplan-Meier curves, and compared with the log rank test. Multivariate Cox analysis was performed to control for possible confounders. A systematic review of literature of the Pubmed, EMBASE and Web of Science databases was also performed to summarize all reported cases.

    A total of 57 (35.8%) and 102 (64.2%) patients underwent fertility sparing and radical surgery. There was no difference in overall survival between patients who had fertility sparing and radical surgery (p=0.92); 5 year overall survival rates were 89% and 87.9%, respectively. After controlling for the performance of lymphadenectomy and disease substage, fertility sparing surgery was not associated with worse survival (hazard ratio 0.83, 95% confidence interval 0.30 to 2.32). A systematic review of the literature identified 132 patients with stage I disease who underwent fertility sparing surgery; a total of 20 patients (15.2%) experienced a relapse at a median of 18 months from surgery.

    To conduct a landscape assessment of public knowledge of cardiovascular disease risk factors and acute myocardial infarction symptoms, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) awareness and training in three underserved communities in Brazil.

    A cross-sectional, population-based survey of non-institutionalised adults age 30 or greater was conducted in three municipalities in Eastern Brazil. Data were analysed as survey-weighted percentages of the sampled populations.

    3035 surveys were completed. Overall, one-third of respondents was unable to identify at least one cardiovascular disease risk factor and 25% unable to identify at least one myocardial infarction symptom. A minority of respondents had received training in CPR or were able to identify an AED. Low levels of education and low socioeconomic status were consistent predictors of lower knowledge levels of cardiovascular disease risk factors, acute coronary syndrome symptoms and CPR and AED use.

METHODS The Med Assist app was developed based on the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Nielson usability model. Beta testing was conducted from March to May 2016 at a primary care clinic in Kuala Lumpur. Ambulatory care patients who scored ≥40% on the electronic health literacy scale, were aged ≥21 years, and were taking two or more long-term medications were recruited. Two rounds of in-depth interviews were conducted with each participant. The first interview, which was conducted upon participant recruitment, was to assess the usabil and uHealth (http//mhealth.jmir.org), 31.01.2020.The extensive feedback from the auditory cortex (AC) to the inferior colliculus (IC) supports critical aspects of auditory behavior but has not been extensively characterized. Previous studies demonstrated that activity in IC is altered by focal electrical stimulation and pharmacological inactivation of AC, but these methods lack the ability to selectively manipulate projection neurons. We measured the effects of selective optogenetic modulation of cortico-collicular feedback projections on IC sound responses in ****. Activation of feedback increased spontaneous activity and decreased stimulus selectivity in IC, whereas suppression had no effect. To further understand how microcircuits in AC may control collicular activity, we optogenetically modulated the activity of different cortical neuronal subtypes, specifically parvalbumin-positive (PV) and somatostatin-positive (SST) inhibitory interneurons. We found that modulating the activity of either type of interneuron did not affect IC sound-evoked activity. Coity only during specific behavior, for example, perhaps when we are listening for a specific sound like the ringing of a phone. Understanding how the brain processes sound is important for understanding how we communicate and why we appreciate music. It could also help in treating hearing loss. A forward genetics approach revealed how an epistatic interaction between a ζ-carotene isomerase mutant (ziso-155) and ccr2 blocked the biosynthesis of specific cis-carotenes and restored PLB formation in etioplasts. We attributed this to a novel apocarotenoid retrograde signal, as chemical inhibition of carotenoid cleavage dioxygenase activity restored PLB formation in ccr2 etioplasts during skotomorphogenesis. We show that the novel Tpx-roGFP2 is a superior probe for the trypanothione redox couple and that the mitochondrial matrix harbors a trypanothione system. Inhibition of trypanothione biosynthesis by the anti-trypanosomal drug Eflornithine impairs the ability of the cytosol and mitochondrion to cope with exogenous oxidative stresses, indicating a direct link between both thiol systems. Tpx depletion abolishes the cytosolic, but only partially affects the mitochondrial sensor response to H2O2.   • A series of related acetylacetonate-carbonyl-rhodium compounds substituted by functionalized phosphines has been prepared in good to excellent yields by the reaction of [Rh(acac)(CO)2] (acac is acetylacetonate) with the corresponding allyl-, cyanomethyl- or cyanoethyl-substituted phosphines. All compounds were fully characterized by 31P, 1H, 13C NMR and IR spectroscopy.     A series of related acetylacetonate-carbonyl-rhodium compounds substituted by functionalized phosphines has been prepared in good to excellent yields by the reaction of [Rh(acac)(CO)2] (acac is acetylacetonate) with the corresponding allyl-, cyanomethyl- or cyanoethyl-substituted phosphines. All compounds were fully characterized by 31P, 1H, 13C NMR and IR spectroscopy. We discuss the lack of discharge policies, identifiable processes or plans specifically tailored to this population as a healthcare and policy gap, and we identify key areas for better understanding and addressing this issue.Each of canada's provinces and territories needs to modernize its basket of insured health services to reflect a broader conceptualization of healthcare. The narrow focus on hospital and physician services excludes multidisciplinary care models, such as those reflected by Family Health Teams in Ontario, Groupe de médecine de famille in Qué****and primary care networks in Alberta. In these models, a wider range of services and supports is being used to respond to changing demographics and patterns of morbidity, and whose residents' care needs include social workers, mental health providers, personal support workers and dietitians.The association between suicide risk and sexual minority status can be understood from the perspective of the social determinants of health, an approach that requires the development of culturally sensitive knowledge. The aim of this study was to characterize young gay and lesbian people's subjective construction of their experience of having lived and survived a suicidal process. Qualitative interviews were conducted and analyzed as products based on life events. In the participants' accounts, we identified hostile contexts associated with suicide, trajectories associated with gay/lesbian identification processes, and milestones related to victimization experiences as part of the intentionality and rationality of suicide.

    Baseline stress and rumination was related to worse health behavior; mindfulness was related to better health behavior. Hierarchical linear modeling showed that all maladaptive health behaviors significantly increased the day of the sporting event compared to individuals' baseline levels. Rumination significantly predicted a spike in alcohol use and sexual risk taking behavior on the day of the Championship game.
    Risk factors for maladaptive health behaviors include stress and rumination, while mindfulness is protective. Interventions may work to make sports events on campus safer for students (e.g., condoms, reminder emails, mindfulness interventions for at risk groups); more research is needed.

Using minority stress theory as a framework, this article aims to highlight the myriad negative mental and physical health outcomes related to body image concerns and eating disorder symptomatology in sexual minority men. Recommendations are provided to guide psychological practice related to body image concerns in sexual minority men.

    A sample of 925 full-time university students enrolled at the host institution were recruited. Participants were primarily undergraduates (70.2%), women (77.1%), and owned an Apple smartphone (70.3%).
    Participants completed an online questionnaire including a modified version of the Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS) and demographics (i.e., degree pursing, gender, type of phone, faculty). Descriptive statistics for SAS sum score were calculated. Univariate ANOVAs were performed to explore differences in smartphone addiction among demographics.
    Mean SAS sum score was 92.00 (i.e., "moderate" addiction level), 95% CI [90.52, 93.49]. Significant ANOVAs were found for degree, phone type, and faculty. Post-hoc tests revealed undergraduates and Apple users reported significantly higher smartphone addiction.
