Increasing ozone concentrations are becoming a severe problem for air pollution in China and have an adverse impact on human health. Here we evaluate premature deaths attributable to long-term exposure to ambient ozone in China between 2013 and 2017 with an air quality model at 5 km resolution and the latest estimates of the relative risk to health. Changes in precursor emissions explain most of these increases, with differences in meteorology accounting for 21% and 16% respectively. Interannual variations in population-weighted ozone and premature respiratory deaths at a provincial level are **** larger than those at a national level, particularly in northern, central and eastern China. These findings emphasize that ozone should be an important focus of future air quality policies in China, and tighter controls of precursor emissions are urgently needed.
Phthalates are plastic softeners with anti-androgenic properties. Prenatal exposure has led to lower testosterone (T) levels and smaller testicles in adult rats. To our knowledge, no studies have examined associations between prenatal phthalate exposure and sex hormone concentrations in infants.
To study associations between phthalate exposure in Danish pregnant women and T, luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), Δ4-androstenedione (adion), 17α-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP) dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) concentrations in their infants (N=479) during mini-puberty.
Concentrations of 12 phthalate metabolites from six phthalate diesters were measured in urine samples collected from 2010 to 2012 from 479 pregnant women participating in the Odense Child Cohort at gestational week 28 (range 20.4-30.4). Serum T, LH, FSH, adion, 17-OHP, DHEAS, weight and height were measured approximately three months after expected date of birth. Associations between prenatal phthalate exposure antio during mini-puberty in boys prenatally exposed to phthalates, which may suggest impairment of Leydig cells. The children will be followed as they approach adrenarche and pubarche in order to assess if long-term adverse effects persist.

In this study, the soil was collected from a mid-latitude agricultural site in Liaoning Province, China, which was spiked with cadmium (Cd2+) and lead (Pb2+). Four immobilization treatments were set up, including (i) corn stover biochar, (ii) organic fertilizer, (iii) combined biochar and organic fertilizer, and (iv) the control group. The immobilized soils were subjected to 16 freeze-thaw cycles to temperatures of -10 °C, -20 °C, and -30 °C. It was found that freeze-thaw cycling increased the labile cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) content in the soil (i.e., exchangeable). The organic fertilizer treatment performed best in short-term immobilization, which was demonstrated by the amount of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) extractable lead (Pb) being 17.3-53.3% lower than that of the other treatments, and 7.2-31.5% lower for cadmium (Cd). Biochar, on the other hand, displayed better long-term performance under freeze-thaw cycling. This is probably because the biochar's organic carbon content is relatively stable, and therefore, releases relatively little dissolved organic carbon (DOC) which could re-mobilize heavy metals. Furthermore, additional sorption sites are formed and the abundance of oxygen-containing functional groups increased when biochar breaks down during freeze-thaw cycles. Overall, the joint application of biochar and organic fertilizer had the greatest immobilization effect, which inhibited the cracking of soil aggregates, reduced the labile metal content, and displayed both short- and long-term immobilization effectiveness. This review provides state of the art knowledge on the mobility of iron nanoparticles in porous media, mechanisms involved in subsurface retention of nZVI based on continuum models and field scale application. Minimally invasive sacroiliac-screw (SI-screw) fixation of the pelvis is used in energy trauma (Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen (AO) classified) and fragility fractures (Fragility Fracture of the Pelvis (FFP) classified). However, available clinical data are based on small case series and biomechanical data seem to be contradictory.
The present single center retrospective cohort study investigated percutaneous SI-screw fixation and augmentation over 15 years. Groups were compared concerning the general epidemiological data, mobilization, complication rates, duration of stay, and safety of SI-screw insertion. Multivariable analyses were performed using logistic regression.
Between 2005 and March 2020, 448 patients with 642 inserted SI-screws were identified. To explore the tenogenic responsiveness of hBM-**** and hWJ-**** to human Growth Differentiation Factor 5 (hGDF-5) we supplemented each at doses of 1, 10, and 100 ng/mL of hGDF-5 and determined proliferation, morphology and time-dependent expression of tenogenic markers. We evaluated the expression of collagen types 1 (COL1A1) and 3 (COL3A1), Decorin (DCN), Scleraxis-A (SCX-A), Tenascin-C (TNC) and Tenomodulin (TNMD) noting the earliest and largest increase with 100 ng/mL. With 100 ng/mL, hBM-**** showed up-regulation of SCX-A (1.7-fold) at Day 1, TNC (1.3-fold) and TNMD (12-fold) at Day 8. hWJ-****, at the same dose, showed up-regulation of COL1A1 (3-fold), DCN (2.7-fold), SCX-A (3.8-fold) and TNC (2.3-fold) after three days of culture. hWJ-**** also showed larger proliferation rate and marked aggregation into a tubular-shaped system at Day 7 (with 100 ng/mL of hGDF-5). System dynamics (SD) modeling is a methodology that can describe the structure and behavior of a complex system. The current paper describes the development of an SD model of burnout. First, an expert- and literature-informed causal loop diagram (CLD) of burnout is developed. Then, a novel approach is developed to collect personal retrospective scenario data. Finally, the CLD and data are translated into a quantitative SD model. The potential of the SD model is illustrated by simulating the behavior of three realistic personas during the onset of and recovery from burnout. The outbreak the SARS-CoV-2 (CoV-2) virus has resulted in over 6.5 million cases of COVID19, greatly stressing global healthcare infrastructure. Lacking medical prophylactic measures to combat disease spread, many nations have adopted social distancing policies in order to mitigate transmission of CoV-2. While mathematical models have suggested the efficacy of social distancing to curb the spread of CoV-2, there is a lack of systematic studies to quantify the real-world efficacy of these approaches. Here, we first demonstrate that implementation of social distancing policies in US states corresponded with a reduction in COVID19 spread rates, and that the reduction in spread rate is proportional to the average change in mobility. We validate this observation on a worldwide scale by analyzing COVID19 spread rate in 134 nations with varying social distancing policies. Globally, we find that social distancing policies significantly reduced the COVID19 spread rate, with resulting in an estimated 65% reduction (95% CI = 39-80%) in new COVID19 cases over a two week time period. These data suggest that social distancing policies may be a powerful tool to prevent spread of COVID19 in real-world scenarios.

Though the study area has been implementing standardized Health Management Information System (HMIS), there was a need for information on how well structures were utilizing information and this study was designed to assess HMIS data utilization.
Facility based retrospective study was conducted in Southern Nations Nationalities and People's Region (SNNPR) in April, 2017. We included data from 163 sample facilities. Data use was evaluated by reviewing eight items from performance monitoring system that included activities from problem identification to monitoring of proposed action plans. Each item reviewed was recoded to yes or no and summed to judge overall performance.

The outbreak the SARS-CoV-2 (CoV-2) virus has resulted in over 6.5 million cases of COVID19, greatly stressing global healthcare infrastructure. Lacking medical prophylactic measures to combat disease spread, many nations have adopted social distancing policies in order to mitigate transmission of CoV-2. While mathematical models have suggested the efficacy of social distancing to curb the spread of CoV-2, there is a lack of systematic studies to quantify the real-world efficacy of these approaches. Here, we first demonstrate that implementation of social distancing policies in US states corresponded with a reduction in COVID19 spread rates, and that the reduction in spread rate is proportional to the average change in mobility. We validate this observation on a worldwide scale by analyzing COVID19 spread rate in 134 nations with varying social distancing policies. Globally, we find that social distancing policies significantly reduced the COVID19 spread rate, with resulting in an estimated 65% reduction (95% CI = 39-80%) in new COVID19 cases over a two week time period. These data suggest that social distancing policies may be a powerful tool to prevent spread of COVID19 in real-world scenarios. The permanent maternal environmental (c2) effects of different lactation persistency indices accounted for 2-9% of the total phenotypic variance in this study. Estimated genetic correlations of lactation persistency indices with all studied reproductive traits were low to moderate and negative (-0.11 to -0.68), except for calving interval. Phenotypic correlations of lactation persistency measures with studied reproductive traits were low (0.01 to 0.15). We retrospectively analyzed clinical data of 201 patients with severe and critical COVID-19. The patients were admitted to the West Campus of Union Hospital of Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology. The data included age, gender, chronic disease, lymphocyte count, and SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid test results. The age of patients in critically ill group was higher than in severely ill group (p = 0.019). The lymphocyte count of critically ill patients was lower than of severely ill patients. The cutoff value of lymphocyte count to distinguish between the critically ill and the severely ill was 0.735 × 109/L (p = 0.001). The cutoff value of lymphocyte count for SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid test results turning negative in severely and critically ill patients with chronic diseases (hypertension, diabetes, and coronary heart disease) was 0.835 × 109/L (p = 0.017). The cutoff value of lymphocyte count for SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid test results turning negative in severely and critically ill male patients was 0.835 × 109/L (p less then 0.0001). Lymphocyte count could be an effective indicator to predict COVID-19 severity. It may also be useful in determining the time for nucleic acid test results to turn negative in COVID-19 patients with underlying chronic diseases or male COVID-19 patients with severe and critical conditions.An accurate preoperative diagnosis of parotid tumors is essential for the selection and planning of surgical treatment. Various modern cross-sectional imaging and cytologic investigations can support the differential diagnosis of parotid tumors. The aim of this study was to achieve a comprehensive and updated review of modern imaging and cytologic investigations used in parotid tumor diagnosis, based on the latest literature data. This literature review could serve as a guide for clinicians in selecting different types of investigations for the preoperative differential diagnosis of parotid tumors. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with its dynamic and advanced sequences is the first-line imaging investigation used in differentiating parotid tumors. Computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography (PET)-CT provide limited indications in differentiating parotid tumors. Fine needle aspiration biopsy and core needle biopsy can contribute with satisfactory results to the cytological diagnosis of parotid tumors. Dynamic MRI with its dynamic contrast-enhanced and diffusion-weighted sequences provides the best accuracy for the preoperative differential diagnosis of parotid tumors. CT allows the best evaluation of bone invasion, being useful when MRI cannot be performed, and PET-CT has value in the follow-up of cancer patients. The dual cytological and imaging approach is the safest method for an accurate differential diagnosis of parotid tumors.Non-destructive analysis of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites is important for confirming the long-term safety and durability of concrete structures. In this study, a pulse-heating infrared thermography technique was used to detect and characterize bonding defects of externally bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) on concrete surface structures. The CFRP composite contains various bonding defects of three different sizes located at five different depths. Sequential thermal images were obtained to describe the temperature contrast and shapes of the bonding defects. Through analysis of the maximum temperature response, we investigated the effects of defect size and depth on the defect temperature response. The relationship between the defect depth and maximum temperature response was used to quantitatively estimate the defect depth. In addition, finite element simulations were performed on the CFRP composites with bonding defects to investigate the temperature response of various defects, which showed good agreement with the experimental results. As a result, a seven-item single-factor model was selected for CONFLICT1-AGE, and a five-item single-factor structure was chosen for CONFLICT1-RES. The use of immune checkpoint inhibitors has dramatically improved the chance of surviving malignant melanomas; however, the effect comes at the cost of toxicities that are difficult to predict. Upper endoscopy revealed an ulcerated mass in the first portion of the duodenum. The patient underwent a segmental duodenal resection and distal gastrectomy with Roux-en-Y reconstruction. A diagnosis of dedifferentiated liposarcoma was rendered on the resected specimen. At 16 months' follow-up, the patient remains without evidence of disease recurrence. We have presented a case of primary duodenal liposarcoma, which is among the rarest locations for gastrointestinal sarcomas with only three previous reports in the literature. Liposarcomas should be included in the differential for submucosal masses of the duodenum.
An isolated metachronous recurrence in the mesorectum from a primary ascending colon cancer is a rare finding that has not been previously reported. This may represent a form of retroperitoneal spread, sometimes referred to as "drop metastasis," which is an uncommon mechanism for metachronous recurrence.
A 38-year-old male presented to the Emergency Department in January of 2018 with profound anemia. A colonoscopy revealed innumerable colonic polyps. He reported having multiple family members diagnosed with colon cancer and was subsequently diagnosed with familial adenomatous polyposis with rectal sparing. Total abdominal colectomy with ileorectal anastomosis was performed, revealing a T3N1a adenocarcinoma of the ascending colon. The patient subsequently underwent 12 cycles of adjuvant FOLFOX. Surveillance imaging in late 2019 revealed a suspicious mass in the superior perirectal soft tissue without any other sites of potential disease. Completion proctectomy was performed in January 2020, 2 years after the initial resection. Pathology revealed a mesorectal tumor deposit located 1.5 cm distal to the ileorectal anastomosis. No evidence of mucosal involvement or nodal metastasis was identified.

Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration (PCD) is one of the classic PNS and is characterized by acute or subacute onset of ataxia and/or presence of onconeural antibodies. A 61-year-old male with ataxia, vertigo, and headache later developed dysarthria, multidirectional nystagmus, hyperactive delirium, auditory hallucinations, psychomotor agitation, and myoclonus. Toxicological, metabolic, infectious, and autoimmune etiologies were assessed and reported negative. An osteolytic lesion was observed in the right iliac crest via computed tomography (CT). A positron emission tomography-CT reported increased fluorodeoxyglucose uptake of a right iliac and right inguinal ganglion. After biopsy of the right inguinal ganglion, a BRAF mutation-positive melanoma metastasis from an occult primary cancer was diagnosed. Dermatologic, ophthalmologic, and endoscopic gastrointestinal assessment did not reveal a primary malignant melanoma. The patient's movement disorders and neuropsychiatric symptoms improved with quetiapine, prednisone, azathioprine, and cyclophosphamide. Oncological management was conducted with MAPK pathway inhibitors (i.e., dabrafenib and trametinib). Movement disorders associated with neuropsychiatric symptoms are complex to diagnose. PNS are rare and often associated with antibodies against neural antigens expressed by the tumor. She was then reevaluated, and due to her history of breast cancer, a biopsy from the scalp was performed and revealed alopecia neoplastica. At the same time that the skin lesions were recognized as disease involvement, the patient presented with dyspepsia, and endoscopy of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract also revealed metastasis to the stomach and bowel. Gastrointestinal metastasis may occur with several types of cancer, but the stomach and bowel are rare metastatic sites for breast cancer.

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is a thrombo-inflammatory disease that is primarily treated with anticoagulation. Better understanding the inflammatory aspects of APS could lead to safer, more effective, and more personalized therapeutic options. To this end, we sought to understand recent literature related to the role of neutrophils and, in particular, neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in APS.
Expression of genes associated with type I interferons, endothelial adhesion, and pregnancy regulation are increased in APS neutrophils. APS neutrophils have a reduced threshold for NET release, which likely potentiates thrombotic events and perhaps especially large-vein thrombosis. Neutrophil-derived reactive oxygen species also appear to play a role in APS pathogenesis. There are new approaches for preventing and disrupting NETs that could potentially be leveraged to reduce the risk of APS-associated thrombosis. Neutrophils and NETs contribute to APS pathophysiology. More precisely understanding their roles dissolution, and altering neutrophil adhesion. Such approaches may ultimately lead to better clinical management of APS patients and thereby reduce the chronic burden of this disease.
Because of overlapping phenotypical presentations, the diagnostic differentiation of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) remains challenging. Thus, this study aimed to examine the diagnostic value of distinct imaging features obtained by high-resolution 3-T MRI for the diagnostic differentiation.
Seventeen patients with PsA and 28 patients with RA were imaged at high resolution using 3-T MRI scanners and a dedicated 16-channel hand coil. All images were analyzed according to the outcome measures in rheumatology clinical trials' (OMERACT) RAMRIS (Rheumatoid Arthritis Magnetic Resonance Imaging Score) and PsAMRIS (Psoriatic Arthritis Magnetic Resonance Imaging Score) for the presence and intensity of synovitis, flexor tenosynovitis, bone edema, bone erosion, periarticular inflammation, bone proliferation, and joint space narrowing. Next, odds ratios (OR) were calculated to determine the strength of the associations between these imaging features, demographic characteristics, and the outc with PsA and may consequently allow the imaging differentiation of PsA and RA.Climatology has increasingly become an important discipline for understanding tourism and recreation, especially in the era of contemporary climate change. Climate indices, in this respect, have been useful tools to yield the climatic attractiveness of tourism destinations as well as in understanding their altering suitability to various tourism types along with the changing climates. In this study, a major gap for a comprehensive climate index tailored for ski tourism is aimed to be fulfilled. For this purpose, initially the Ski Climate Index (SCI) is specified, based on fuzzy logic and as informed by literature and through extensive co-creation with the ski tourism industry experts, and applied to an emerging destination, Turkey, based on regional climate modeling projections. The index is designed as a combination of snow reliability and aesthetics and comfort facets, the latter of which includes sunshine, wind, and thermal comfort conditions. Results show that the Eastern Anatolia region is climatically the most suitable area for future development, taking account of the overriding effects of natural and technical snow reliability. Future research suggestions include the incorporation of more components into the index as well as technical recommendations to improve its application and validation.

Over the last decade, the definition of healthy sexuality has remained elusive while the boundary delineating unhealthy sexuality has radically changed. These changes are not reflected in current approaches to sex offender treatment which continue to focus on suppression of offenders' sexuality. Our attention to the management of sexual behaviors has led to a diminished, and perhaps impoverished, curiosity and understanding of what is driving problematic sexual behavior and also moves us further from an understanding of what leads to "healthy" sexual behavior. It is our contention that a consideration of sex offending behavior through the lens of early childhood trauma will lead to an improvement in our ability to assist these offenders in the development of sexually happier and more fulfillinopment of sexually happier and more fulfilling lives while being able to function within the parameters of society's standards for legal behavior. Neutrophil-derived reactive oxygen species also appear to play a role in APS pathogenesis. There are new approaches for preventing and disrupting NETs that could potentially be leveraged to reduce the risk of APS-associated thrombosis. Neutrophils and NETs contribute to APS pathophysiology. More precisely understanding their roles dissolution, and altering neutrophil adhesion. All images were analyzed according to the outcome measures in rheumatology clinical trials' (OMERACT) RAMRIS (Rheumatoid Arthritis Magnetic Resonance Imaging Score) and PsAMRIS (Psoriatic Arthritis Magnetic Resonance Imaging Score) for the presence and intensity of synovitis, flexor tenosynovitis, bone edema, bone erosion, periarticular inflammation, bone proliferation, and joint space narrowing. Climate indices, in this respect, have been useful tools to yield the climatic attractiveness of tourism destinations as well as in understanding their altering suitability to various tourism types along with the changing climates. In this study, a major gap for a comprehensive climate index tailored for ski tourism is aimed to be fulfilled. For this purpose, initially the Ski Climate Index (SCI) is specified, based on fuzzy logic and as informed by literature and through extensive co-creation with the ski tourism industry experts, and applied to an emerging destination, Turkey, based on regional climate modeling projections. The index is designed as a combination of snow reliability and aesthetics and comfort facets, the latter of which includes sunshine, wind, and thermal comfort conditions. Results show that the Eastern Anatolia region is climatically the most suitable area for future development, taking account of the overriding effects of natural and technical snow reliability. Future research suggestions include the incorporation of more components into the index as well as technical recommendations to improve its application and validation. This review will examine the current, although limited, literature on the development of healthy sexuality for sex offenders, as well as some of the related controversies surrounding sex offender specific therapies. Over the last decade, the definition of healthy sexuality has remained elusive while the boundary delineating unhealthy sexuality has radically changed. These changes are not reflected in current approaches to sex offender treatment which continue to focus on suppression of offenders' sexuality. Our attention to the management of sexual behaviors has led to a diminished, and perhaps impoverished, curiosity and understanding of what is driving problematic sexual behavior and also moves us further from an understanding of what leads to "healthy" sexual behavior. Pairwise comparisons showed that the AcVA sequence shares 47.81-57.78% nt sequence identity at the complete genome level, 41.89-56.41% aa sequence identity at the polyprotein level, and 50-63.8% aa sequence identity at the coat protein level with other members of genus Potyvirus. Clinical experience with landiolol use in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and a severely depressed left ventricular (LV) function is limited. We compared the efficacy and safety of landiolol with that of digoxin as an intravenous drug in controlling the heart rate (HR) during AF associated with a very low LV ejection fraction (LVEF).We retrospectively analyzed 53 patients treated with landiolol (n = 34) or digoxin (n = 19) for AF tachycardias with an LVEF ≤ 25. The landiolol dose was adjusted between 0.5 and 10 μg/kg/minute according to the patient's condition. The response to treatment was defined as a decrease in the HR of ≤ 110/minute, and that decreased by ≥ 20% from baseline.There were no significant differences between the two groups regarding the clinical characteristics. The responder rate to landiolol at 24 hours was significantly higher than that to digoxin (71.0% versus 41.2%; odds ratio 4.65, 95% confidence interval 1.47-31.0, P = 0.048). The percent decrease in the HR from baseline at 1, 2, 12, and 24 hours was greater in the landiolol group than in the digoxin group (P less then 0.01, P = 0.071, P = 0.036, and P = 0.016, respectively). The systolic blood pressure (SBP) from baseline within 24 hours after administering landiolol was significantly reduced, whereas digoxin did not decrease the SBP over time. Hypotension ( less then 80 mmHg) occurred in two patients in the landiolol group and 0 in the digoxin group (P = 0.53).Landiolol could be more effective in controlling the AF HR than digoxin even in patients with severely depressed LV function. We analyzed 218 patients with NSTEMI without CK elevation (NSTEMI-CK) for whom BNP was available. In the NSTEMI-CK group, patients were assigned to high- and low-BNP groups according to BNP values (cut-off BNP, 100 pg/mL). The primary endpoint was defined as a composite of all-cause death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, non-fatal stroke, cardiac failure, and urgent revascularization for unstable angina up to 3 years. Primary endpoints were observed in 60 (33.3%) events among patients with NSTEMI-CK. Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed a significantly higher event rate for primary endpoints among patients with high BNP (log-rank P less then 0.001). After adjusting for covariates, a higher BNP level was significantly associated with long-term clinical outcomes in NSTEMI-CK (adjusted hazard ratio, 4.86; 95% confidence interval, 2.18-12.44; P less then 0.001).The BNP concentration is associated with adverse long-term clinical outcomes among patients with NSTEMI-CK who are considered low risk. A 69-year-old man underwent pembrolizumab therapy as a second-line treatment. He had myalgia and a slightly elevated creatinine kinase (CK) on the day of the second administration of pembrolizumab. Five days later, the patient was admitted with severe fatigue and an abnormal gait. Physical examination revealed reduced muscle reflexes and proximal muscle weakness. An electrocardiogram (ECG) demonstrated a wide QRS complex ventricular rhythm. A marked elevation of cardiac enzymes, including CK, myoglobin, and cardiac troponin I, was detected. Myocardial biopsy revealed inflammatory cell infiltration and the partial impairment of myocardial tissue. The electromyogram was normal, but inflammation in myofibers was noted in a muscle biopsy. Myocarditis and myositis as immune-related adverse events (irAEs) were suspected, and the patient began intravenous steroid therapy and plasma exchange.

Molecular orbital framework is of central importance in chemistry. Often used by chemists and physicists to gain insight into molecular properties, Hartree-Fock or Kohn-Sham orbitals are obtained from rather crude treatments and, strictly speaking, are not observables. Yet, quantum mechanics offers a route for connecting general many-electron wavefunctions with reduced quantities-density matrices and orbitals-which give rise to observable properties. Such mapping makes possible, in principle, reconstruction of these objects from sufficiently detailed experimental data. This Perspective discusses Dyson orbitals and various types of natural transition orbitals and illustrates their role in modeling and interpreting different types of spectroscopic measurements.Constructing matrix product operators (MPOs) is at the core of the modern density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and its time dependent formulation. For the DMRG to be conveniently used in different problems described by different Hamiltonians, in this work, we propose a new generic algorithm to construct the MPO of an arbitrary operator with a sum-of-products form based on the bipartite graph theory. We show that the method has the following advantages (i) it is automatic in that only the definition of the operator is required; (ii) it is symbolic thus free of any numerical error; (iii) the complementary operator technique can be fully employed so that the resulting MPO is globally optimal for any given order of degrees of freedom; and (iv) the symmetry of the system could be fully employed to reduce the dimension of MPO. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the new algorithm, the MPOs of Hamiltonians ranging from the prototypical spin-boson model and the Holstein model to the more complicated ab initio electronic Hamiltonian and the anharmonic vibrational Hamiltonian with the sextic force field are constructed. It is found that for the former three cases, our automatic algorithm can reproduce exactly the same MPOs as the optimally hand-crafted ones already known in the literature.Studies using molecular dynamics (MD) have long struggled to simulate the failure modes of materials, predicting unrealistically high ductility and failing to capture brittle fracture. The primary cause of this shortcoming is an inadequate description of bond breaking. While reactive force fields such as ReaxFF show improvements compared to traditional force fields, the charge models used yield unphysical partial charges, especially during dissociation of ionic bonds. This flaw may be remedied by using the atom-condensed Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT) approximated to a second order (ACKS2) charge model for determining partial charges. In this work, we present a new ACKS2-enabled Reax force field for fracture simulations of lithium oxide systems, which was obtained by training against an extensive set of DFT, multireference configuration interaction (****), and ****+Q reference data using genetic optimization techniques. This new force field significantly improves the bond breaking behavior, but still cannot fully capture the brittle fracture in MD simulations, suggesting more research is needed to improve simulation of brittle fracture.A scheme for the calculation of molecular properties within the framework of unitary coupled-cluster (UCC) theory in both the electronic ground and excited states is presented. As first computational tests, the second-order UCC method (UCC2) and the one employing third-order amplitudes (also eigenvectors) together with the second-order density matrix, denoted as UCC3(2), are applied to the calculation of dipole moments for a series of small closed- and open-shell systems as well as 4-cyanoindole and 2,3-benzofuran and compared to full configuration interaction or experimental results. For the aromatic organic molecules, the UCC2 method is shown to be sufficient for the ground-state dipole moment, whereas the UCC3(2) scheme is superior for excited-state dipole moments.Directional control over surface plasmon polariton (SPP) waves is a prerequisite for the development of miniaturized optical circuitry. Here, the efficacy of single and dual component SPP steering elements is explored through photoemission electron microscopy. Our imaging scheme relies on two-color photoemission and counter-propagating SPP generation, which collectively allow SPPs to be visualized in real space. Wave-vector difference mixing between the two-dimensional nanohole array and photon momenta enables SPP steering with directionality governed by the array lattice constant and input photon direction. In our dual component configuration, separate SPP generation and Bragg diffraction based steering optics are employed. We find that array Bragg planes principally influence the SPP angles through the array band structure, which allows us to visualize both positive and negative refractory waves.A theoretical study of the mechanisms of electroluminescence (EL) generation in photoactive molecules with donor and acceptor centers linked by saturated σ-bonds (molecules of the Aviram-Ratner-type) is presented. The approach is based on the kinetics of single-electron transitions between many-body molecular states. This study shows that the EL polarity arises due to asymmetric coupling of molecular orbitals of the photochromic part of the molecule to the electrodes. The gate voltage controls the power of the EL through the occupancy of the excited singlet state. The shifting of the orbital energies forms a resonant or a non-resonant path for the transmission of electrons through the molecule. The action of the gate voltage is reflected in specific critical voltages. An analytical dependence of the critical voltages on the energies of molecular states involved in the formation of EL, as well as on the gate voltage, was derived for both positive and negative polarities. Conditions under which the gate voltage lowers the absolute value of the bias voltage that is responsible for the activation of the resonance mechanism of EL formation were also established.

Explicit expressions for the expectation value of a general one-particle operator correct through second order in perturbation theory have been derived and coded for the electronic ground state as well as for excited states of predominant single-excitation character. The resulting equations are shown to be equivalent to those of the second-order ADC/ISR procedure. As first computational tests, the second-order UCC method (UCC2) and the one employing third-order amplitudes (also eigenvectors) together with the second-order density matrix, denoted as UCC3(2), are applied to the calculation of dipole moments for a series of small closed- and open-shell systems as well as 4-cyanoindole and 2,3-benzofuran and compared to full configuration interaction or experimental results. For the aromatic organic molecules, the UCC2 method is shown to be sufficient for the ground-state dipole moment, whereas the UCC3(2) scheme is superior for excited-state dipole moments.Directional control over surface plasmon polariton (SPP) waves is a prerequisite for the development of miniaturized optical circuitry. Here, the efficacy of single and dual component SPP steering elements is explored through photoemission electron microscopy. Our imaging scheme relies on two-color photoemission and counter-propagating SPP generation, which collectively allow SPPs to be visualized in real space. Wave-vector difference mixing between the two-dimensional nanohole array and photon momenta enables SPP steering with directionality governed by the array lattice constant and input photon direction. In our dual component configuration, separate SPP generation and Bragg diffraction based steering optics are employed. We find that array Bragg planes principally influence the SPP angles through the array band structure, which allows us to visualize both positive and negative refractory waves.A theoretical study of the mechanisms of electroluminescence (EL) generation in photoactive molecules with donor and acceptor centers linked by saturated σ-bonds (molecules of the Aviram-Ratner-type) is presented. The approach is based on the kinetics of single-electron transitions between many-body molecular states. This study shows that the EL polarity arises due to asymmetric coupling of molecular orbitals of the photochromic part of the molecule to the electrodes. The gate voltage controls the power of the EL through the occupancy of the excited singlet state. The shifting of the orbital energies forms a resonant or a non-resonant path for the transmission of electrons through the molecule. The action of the gate voltage is reflected in specific critical voltages. An analytical dependence of the critical voltages on the energies of molecular states involved in the formation of EL, as well as on the gate voltage, was derived for both positive and negative polarities.
