Additionally, our work suggests that the long distance CK signaling involved in preferential root foraging may function as a supply signal modulating demand signaling strength. Previous studies have identified that WRKY transcription factors can regulate ABA signaling pathway. Here, we identified an Oswrky29 mutant with enhanced dormancy in a screen of T-DNA insertion population. OsWRKY29 is a member of WRKY transcription factor family which located in the nuclear. The genetic analyses showed that both knockout and RNAi lines of OsWRKY29 had enhanced seed dormancy whereas its overexpression lines displayed reduced seed dormancy. When treated with ABA, OsWRKY29 knockout and RNAi lines showed greater sensitivity than its overexpression lines. In addition, the expression levels of ABA positive response factors OsVP1 and OsABF1 were higher in the OsWRKY29 mutants but were lower in its overexpression lines. Further assays showed that OsWRKY29 could bind to the promoters of OsABF1 and OsVP1 to inhibit their expression. In summary, we identified a new ABA signaling repressor OsWRKY29 that represses seed dormancy by directly downregulating the expression of OsABF1 and OsVP1.Zinc (Zn) is an essential micronutrient for plants and humans. Only a very limited information is available on structural features and mechanism of Zn transport of plant ZIP family transporters. In this article, we present a detailed account on structure, function, regulations and phylogenetic relationships of plant ZIP transporters. We give an insight to structure of plant ZIPs through homology modeling and multiple sequence alignment with Bordetella bronchiseptica ZIP (BbZIP) protein whose crystal structure has been solved recently. We also provide details on ZIP transporter genes identified and characterized in rice and other plants till date. Altitude denotes a comprehensive complex of environmental factors affecting plant growth in many aspects, e.g., UV-light radiation, temperature, and humidity. To reveal how plants alter ecological adaptation to altitude through genes, we used Populus szechuanica var. tibetica growing on the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau. F ST between the low- and high- altitude population was 0.00748, Q ST for leaf width, length and area were 0.00924, 0.1108, 0.00964 respectively. With the Elliptic Fourier-based morphometric model, association study of leaf shape was allowed, the dissection of the pleiotropic expression oding of genetic control with respect to leaf shape and constitute an entirely novel perspective regarding leaf adaptation and development in plants.Carrizo citrange [Citrus sinensis (L.) Raf., CC] is one of the most widely used rootstocks in citriculture worldwide, but its cytogenetic study has been hampered by its inherent small size, morphological similarity to mitotic chromosomes, and lack of accessible cytological landmarks. In our previous study, a spontaneously occurring tetraploid CC seedling was discovered. The main goals of this study were to elucidate the chromosome constitution and construct the karyotypes of diploid CC rootstock and its corresponding spontaneously occurring tetraploid. To accomplish these, the chromosomal characteristics were investigated by sequential multicolor fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with eight properly labeled repetitive DNA sequences, including a centromere-like repeat, four satellite repeats, two rDNAs, and an oligonucleotide of telomeric (TTTAGGG) n repeat. The results nicely demonstrated that these repetitive DNAs are reliable cytogenetic markers that collectively facilitate simultaneous and unequivocal identification of homologous chromosome pairs.

Consistent to the in vitro results, selenium treatment alleviated ischemic damage in hyperglycemic ischemic animals. Furthermore, selenium reduced the structural changes of mitochondria caused by hyperglycemic ischemia and further promoted the mitochondrial biogenesis signaling. Selenium activates mitochondrial biogenesis signaling, protects mitochondrial structure integrity and ameliorates cerebral I/R injury in hyperglycemic rats.The study is to investigate psychological self-sufficiency-the force within someone that activates cognitive and non-cognitive process of shifting perceived barriers into hope actions-as it relates to economic self-sufficiency among jobseekers with mental health barriers. Among a sample of 2455 low-income jobseekers in job readiness programs at six community-based agencies in Chicago, a subsample of 424 who self-identified as having mental illness barriers are selected to analyze the relationships between employment hope, employment barriers, and economic self-sufficiency using structural equation modeling. Future research should explore the use of religiosity as an alternative therapy to cope with depression symptoms.Background The C3 glomerulopathies (C3G) are recently defined glomerular diseases, attributed to abnormal complement regulation. Dense deposit disease (DDD) is part of the spectrum of C3G, characterized by electron-dense deposits in the lamina densa of the glomerular basement membrane. Patients with DDD present with hematuria, variable degrees of proteinuria, and kidney dysfunction. Kidney biopsies typically disclose proliferative and inflammatory patterns of injury. Treatment with glucocorticoids and mycophenolate mofetil has been shown to achieve remission of proteinuria in a significant proportion of C3G patients. Case-diagnosis/treatment We report two patients with persistent nephrotic syndrome while on immunosuppressive therapy. Repeat kidney biopsies disclosed massive C3 deposits with foot process effacement in the absence of proliferative or inflammatory lesions on light microscopy. Conclusion These cases, coupled with data from animal models of disease and the variable response to eculizumab in C3G patients, illustrate that two different pathways might be involved in the development of kidney injury in C3G a C5-independent pathway leading to glomerular capillary wall injury and the development of proteinuria versus a C5-dependent pathway that causes proliferative glomerulonephritis and kidney dysfunction.COVID-19 is the illness caused by infection with the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Although myalgia is common in adults, it has not been noted as a common symptom in children. There have been a few reported cases of COVID-19-associated rhabdomyolysis in adults. This case report describes a 16-year-old boy who presented with fever, myalgias, mild shortness of breath with exertion, and dark-colored urine. COVID-19 PCR was positive. His initial creatinine kinase (CK) level was 427,656 U/L. Serum creatinine was normal for age. He was treated with isotonic intravenous fluids containing sodium bicarbonate to maintain urine output of 100-200 mL/h and urine pH > 7.0. His serum creatinine remained normal throughout the hospital stay and he was discharged on hospital day 12 with a CK of 6526 U/L. To our knowledge, no pediatric cases of COVID-19-associated rhabdomyolysis have been previously reported. Adult cases of rhabdomyolysis have been reported and a few reports have noted patients with elevated CK levels without rhabdomyolysis. Given this pediatric case of COVID-19-associated rhabdomyolysis, pediatric clinicians should be aware of this complication and manage fluids appropriately in order to prevent acute kidney injury.Background Serum cystatin C (CysC) is a promising biomarker of kidney function, which has higher accuracy and sensitivity when compared with creatinine. To better utilize serum CysC in clinical practice, this study aimed to establish continuous paediatric reference intervals (RIs) for serum CysC. Venous blood samples were collected and serum CysC levels were measured using the immunoturbidimetric measurement principle. Fractional polynomial regression model and quantile regression was applied in the statistical analysis to generate continuous RIs. Results A total of 378 samples with equal numbers of males and females were analysed for serum CysC. No outliers were found in this analysis. The continuous RIs are presented as equations and graphical scatterplots. Conclusions This study established continuous paediatric reference intervals (RIs) for serum CysC in healthy term neonates and children. The continuous RIs generated from this study show age-based dynamic changes as well as blood group and gender-specific differences for serum CysC. Serum creatine kinase (CK) was used as an indirect marker of muscle destruction. Results Forty-four patients (mean age, 10.9 ± 3.3 years) were included. Blood pressure was evaluated by 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring in 28 patients. Hypertension was found in 9 (32.1%), eight of whom were using steroids. Mild proteinuria, hypercalciuria, hypocalciuria, and hyperphosphaturia in 24-h urine collection (n = 36) were detected in 3 (8.3%), 5 (13.9%), 7 (19.7%), and 6 (16.7%) patients, respectively. Materials and methods We investigated the effects of CCL18 on the lung cancer cell line A549, that show low GPR30 expression and the breast cancer cell lines MCF-7, that has high GPR30 expression and MDA-MB-231. These cells were stimulated in different media with CCL18 and then analyzed by qPCR, In-Cell Western®, western blot and ELISA. We present a unique composite assembly of rhombohedral Li3V2(PO4)3 and carbon nanofiber, which simultaneously facilitates Li-ion transport as well as electron transfer. For the synthesis of this composite, the inorganic precursors were confined in electron-spun nanofibers, and then, through controlled annealing, Na3V2(PO4)3 particulates were grown with controllable crystallite size and partially embedded into carbon nanofibers with precisely controlled diameter. The rhombohedral Li3V2(PO4)3 could be successfully obtained by ion exchange from Na to Li in the prepared Na3V2(PO4)3. The final rhombohedral Li3V2(PO4)3 particles anchored onto the carbon nanofibers exhibited excellent electrochemical performance with fast kinetics for Li-ion batteries. Suprisingly it maintains 69 and 41 mAh/g even at 100C as cathode and anode. Several advanced characterizations revealed that its ultrafast kinetics could be attributed to synergistic effect resulting from the distinctive microstructure of the composite and the structural superiority of highly symmetric rhombohedral Li3V2(PO4)3 over its monoclinic homologue for Li-ion transport.Amyloidosis is a well-known but poorly understood phenomenon caused by the aggregation of proteins, often leading to pathological conditions. In this study, the chemosensitization effect of LCA was examined in ABCG2-overexpressing multidrug-resistant cancer cells. Experimental data demonstrated that LCA inhibits the drug transport function of ABCG2 and reverses ABCG2-mediated multidrug resistance in human multidrug-resistant cancer cell lines in a concentration-dependent manner. Results of LCA-stimulated ABCG2 ATPase activity and the in silico docking analysis of LCA to the inward-open conformation of human ABCG2 suggest that LCA binds ABCG2 in the transmembrane substrate-binding pocket. A simple and effective pretreatment procedure was developed for the extraction and purification of the two target chiral fungicides using reversed-dispersive solid-phase extraction (r-DSPE) with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The influence of the type and amount of MWCNTs on the purification efficiencies and recoveries was evaluated. The mean recoveries for all four stereoisomers were in the range of 76.9-91.2%, with relative standard deviation (RSD) values below 7.2%. The limit of quantification (LOQ) of all stereoisomers of mefentrifluconazole and ipfentrifluconazole was 5 μg/kg for all tested matrixes. The results of the method validation and real samples analysis confirm that the established method is efficient and reliable for the enantiomeric determination of mefentrifluconazole and ipfentrifluconazole in plant-origin food samples.Reduced sulfur (S) has a contrasting role in the fate of arsenic (As) in peatlands. Sulfur bridges provide efficient binding of As to organic carbon (C), but the formation of aqueous As-S species, so-called thioarsenates, leads to a low to no sorption tendency to organic C functional groups. Here, we studied how pH changes the role of reduced S in desorption and retention of presorbed As in model peat. Control desorption experiments without S addition revealed that As was mobilized, predominantly as arsenite, in all treatments with relative mobilization increasing with pH (4.5 less then 7.0 less then 8.5). Addition of sulfide or polysulfide caused substantial As retention at acidic conditions but significantly enhanced As desorption compared to controls at neutral to alkaline pH. Thioarsenates dominated As speciation at pH 7.0 and 8.5 (maximum, 79%) and remained in solution without (re)sorption to peat. Predominance of arsenite in control experiments and no evidence of surface-bound thioarsenates at pH 7.

Introduction and objectives Surgical treatment for trigonocephaly aims to eliminate a stigmatizing deformity, yet the severity that captures unwanted attention is unknown. Surgeons intervene at different points of severity, eliciting controversy. This study used eye tracking to investigate when deformity is perceived. Material and methods Three-dimensional photogrammetric images of a normal child and a child with trigonocephaly were mathematically deformed, in 10% increments, to create a spectrum of 11 images. These images were shown to participants using an eye tracker. Participants' gaze patterns were analyzed, and participants were asked if each image looked "normal" or "abnormal." Results Sixty-six graduate students were recruited. Average dwell time toward pathologic areas of interest (AOIs) increased proportionally, from 0.77 ± 0.33 seconds at 0% deformity to 1.08 ± 0.75 seconds at 100% deformity (P less then .0001). A majority of participants did not agree an image looked "abnormal" until 90% deformity from any angle. Conclusion Eye tracking can be used as a proxy for attention threshold toward orbitofrontal deformity. The amount of attention toward orbitofrontal AOIs increased proportionally with severity. Participants did not generally agree there was "abnormality" until deformity was severe. This study supports the assertion that surgical intervention may be best reserved for more severe deformity.Background The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of LAA exclusion on short term outcomes in patients with atrial fibrillation undergoing isolated coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Methods We queried the 2010-2014 National Readmissions Database (NRD) for patients who underwent coronary artery bypass graft repair with and without left atrial appendage ligation using ICD-9 procedure codes (ICD-9 36.1xx). Only patients with a history of atrial fibrillation were included in our analysis. The primary outcome of our study was 30-day readmissions following discharge. Secondary outcomes were in hospital mortality and stroke. To assess the postoperative outcomes, we utilized multivariate logistic regression models to adjust for clinical and demographic covariates. Results In total we analyzed 253,287 CABG patients, 7.0% of whom received LAA closure. LAA exclusion was associated with a greater risk of postoperative respiratory failure (8.2% vs. 6.2%, p less then .0001), acute kidney injury (21.8% vs. 18.5%, p less then .0001), but did not significantly change the rate of blood transfusions or occurrence of cardiac tamponade. LAA exclusion was associated with a non-significant reduction in stroke (7.9% vs. 8.6%, p = .12), no difference in in-hospital mortality (2.2% vs. 2.2% p = .99), and a greater risk of 30-day readmission (16.0% vs. 9.6%, p less then .0001) After covariate adjustment, LAA ligation remained a significant predictor of 30-day readmission (OR 1.640, 95% CI 1.603 - 1.677, p less then .0001). Conclusions LAA exclusion during isolated CABG in patients with AF is associated with a higher rate of 30-day readmission. Introduction and objectives Surgical treatment for trigonocephaly aims to eliminate a stigmatizing deformity, yet the severity that captures unwanted attention is unknown. Surgeons intervene at different points of severity, eliciting controversy. This study used eye tracking to investigate when deformity is perceived. Material and methods Three-dimensional photogrammetric images of a normal child and a child with trigonocephaly were mathematically deformed, in 10% increments, to create a spectrum of 11 images. These images were shown to participants using an eye tracker. Participants' gaze patterns were analyzed, and participants were asked if each image looked "normal" or "abnormal." Results Sixty-six graduate students were recruited. Average dwell time toward pathologic areas of interest (AOIs) increased proportionally, from 0.77 ± 0.33 seconds at 0% deformity to 1.08 ± 0.75 seconds at 100% deformity (P less then .0001). A majority of participants did not agree an image looked "abnormal" until 90% deformity from any angle. Conclusion Eye tracking can be used as a proxy for attention threshold toward orbitofrontal deformity. The amount of attention toward orbitofrontal AOIs increased proportionally with severity. Participants did not generally agree there was "abnormality" until deformity was severe. This study supports the assertion that surgical intervention may be best reserved for more severe deformity.Background The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of LAA exclusion on short term outcomes in patients with atrial fibrillation undergoing isolated coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Methods We queried the 2010-2014 National Readmissions Database (NRD) for patients who underwent coronary artery bypass graft repair with and without left atrial appendage ligation using ICD-9 procedure codes (ICD-9 36.1xx). Only patients with a history of atrial fibrillation were included in our analysis. The primary outcome of our study was 30-day readmissions following discharge. Secondary outcomes were in hospital mortality and stroke. To assess the postoperative outcomes, we utilized multivariate logistic regression models to adjust for clinical and demographic covariates. Results In total we analyzed 253,287 CABG patients, 7.0% of whom received LAA closure. LAA exclusion was associated with a greater risk of postoperative respiratory failure (8.2% vs. 6.2%, p less then .0001), acute kidney injury (21.8% vs. 18.5%, p less then .0001), but did not significantly change the rate of blood transfusions or occurrence of cardiac tamponade. LAA exclusion was associated with a non-significant reduction in stroke (7.9% vs. 8.6%, p = .12), no difference in in-hospital mortality (2.2% vs. 2.2% p = .99), and a greater risk of 30-day readmission (16.0% vs. 9.6%, p less then .0001) After covariate adjustment, LAA ligation remained a significant predictor of 30-day readmission (OR 1.640, 95% CI 1.603 - 1.677, p less then .0001). Conclusions LAA exclusion during isolated CABG in patients with AF is associated with a higher rate of 30-day readmission. Post-operative measures to mitigate the loss of the hormonal and hemodynamic effects of the LAA may increase the therapeutic benefit of this procedure.Hospice and Palliative care benefits are infrequently realized by African American patients with cancer. We instrumented the outlet of a stormwater pond in an urban residential neighbourhood in Florida, United States to (1) investigate the concentration and composition of N forms during the summer rainy season (May to September 2016), and (2) determine the bioavailability of organic N in the stormwater pond with a bioassay experiment. A total of 144 outflow water samples over 13 storm events were collected at the outlet of the stormwater pond that collects runoff from the residential catchment. Samples were analysed for various inorganic N [ammonium (NH4-N), nitrate (NO3-N)], and organic N forms [dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), and particulate organic nitrogen (PON)]. Flow-weighted mean concentration of total N (TN) in pond outflow for all collected storm events was 1.3±1.42 mg L-1, with DON as the dominant form (78%), followed by PON and NO3-N (each at 8%), and NH4-N (6%). In the bioassay experiment, organic N (DON+PON) was significantly decreased by 25-28% after 5 days of incubation, suggesting that a portion of the DON carried from the pond outflow to receiving water bodies may be bioavailable. These results suggest that efforts to mitigate stormwater N outflows from urban ponds should incorporate both inorganic and organic N in management plans.CONTEXT The person-centred approach (PCA) is a promising avenue for care improvement. OBJECTIVE To understand the meaning attributed to PCA in the Burkina Faso context of care and to identify the challenges related to its adoption from the perspective of caregivers and women service users (hereafter referred to as patients). METHODS An ethnographic qualitative research design was used in this study. We conducted 31 semi-directed interviews with caregivers and patients from Koudougou (Burkina Faso) healthcare facilities. We also carried out direct observation of consultations. Data thematic analyses are based on the person-centred approach analysis framework. The effects of a subinhibitory concentration of (-)-α-pinene (250 mg/L) on survival of C. jejuni, and in combination with enrofloxacin on fluoroquinolone resistance development in C. jejuni, were determined in a broiler chicken model, by addition of (-)-α-pinene to the broiler water supply.

Management of acute HIT currently involves (1) cessation of heparin exposure, and (2) inhibition of coagulation with an anticoagulant other than heparin. Several anticoagulants can be considered for the treatment of HIT. Anticoagulant monitoring, management of drug-induced adverse events including bleeding, and therapeutic dosing schedules in selected clinical settings represent challenges to the clinician treating HIT patients. Moreover, the fact that not all registered anticoagulants are approved for HIT in Switzerland further complicates the management of HIT. The present recommendations on the anticoagulant treatment of HIT in Switzerland have been elaborated by a panel of Swiss experts belonging to the Working Party Hemostasis (WPH) of the Swiss Society of Hematology (SGH-SSH). They are intended to support clinicians in their decision making when treating HIT patients.OBJECTIVE Only a few studies have addressed the impact of nocturnal leg cramps on sleep quality. We investigated the association between nocturnal leg cramps and sleep disturbance using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and assessed the criterion validity of a single-item daily measure of cramp-related sleep disturbance. METHODS In this prospective observational study conducted in Western Switzerland from January 2015 to June 2016, 20 primary care physicians recruited up to 20 consecutive patients aged >50 years. During a 2-week period, patients recorded on a daily basis the number of cramps and their level of sleep disturbance using a single item measure (10-point visual analogue scale from 0 to 10). They also completed the PSQI questionnaire on day 14. Patients were considered as “poor sleepers” if the PSQI score was >5/21. The criterion validity of the single-item measure (averaged over the 2-week period) was assessed using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient to determine the correlation with the PSQI. RESULTS 129 patients participated (women 67%, mean age 70 years). The single-item and the PSQI mean scores were 2.6/10 (standard deviation 2.5) and 6.1/21 (SD 3.9), respectively. Being a “poor sleeper” (47% of patients) was not statistically significantly associated with patients’ characteristics and number of cramps. The averaged single-item measure was not correlated with the PSQI score (Spearman’s rank correlation 0.08, p-value 0.51). CONCLUSIONS In this primary care sample, poor sleep quality was not associated with suffering from a higher number of nocturnal cramps, and a single-item mean score was not a valid instrument to screen for sleep disturbance among these patients.With the technical developments in neurosurgery, increasing numbers of neurosurgical implants are used in an increasingly aged population of patients with several comorbidities. Consequently, the number of neurosurgical implant-associated infections is continuously raising, resulting in significant morbidity and mortality, including disfiguring skull deformities and lack of brain protection. In this article we review infections associated with craniotomy, cranioplasty, neurostimulators, internal cerebrospinal fluid shunts, and external ventricular and lumbar cerebrospinal fluid drainages. In all implant-associated infections biofilms are involved, which are difficult to eradicate. A low number of microorganisms is sufficient to form a biofilm on the implant surface. In most infections, microorganisms of the skin flora are involved. Microorganisms reach the implant during surgery or immediately thereafter as a result of wound healing disturbances. In about two thirds of patients, implant-associated infections opriate debridement with or without implant exchange or removal, depending on the age of the biofilm and the soft tissue condition. Antimicrobial treatment includes a prolonged biofilm-active therapy, typically for 4–12 weeks. This concept is attractive, because in selected patients, implants can be retained or exchanged in a one-stage surgical procedure, which improves not only quality of life, but also decreases morbidity because every additional neurosurgical intervention can lead to secondary complications, including intracerebral bleeding or ischemia.

Management of acute HIT currently involves (1) cessation of heparin exposure, and (2) inhibition of coagulation with an anticoagulant other than heparin. Several anticoagulants can be considered for the treatment of HIT. Anticoagulant monitoring, management of drug-induced adverse events including bleeding, and therapeutic dosing schedules in selected clinical settings represent challenges to the clinician treating HIT patients. Moreover, the fact that not all registered anticoagulants are approved for HIT in Switzerland further complicates the management of HIT. The present recommendations on the anticoagulant treatment of HIT in Switzerland have been elaborated by a panel of Swiss experts belonging to the Working Party Hemostasis (WPH) of the Swiss Society of Hematology (SGH-SSH). They are intended to support clinicians in their decision making when treating HIT patients.OBJECTIVE Only a few studies have addressed the impact of nocturnal leg cramps on sleep quality. We investigated the association between nocturnal leg cramps and sleep disturbance using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and assessed the criterion validity of a single-item daily measure of cramp-related sleep disturbance. METHODS In this prospective observational study conducted in Western Switzerland from January 2015 to June 2016, 20 primary care physicians recruited up to 20 consecutive patients aged >50 years. During a 2-week period, patients recorded on a daily basis the number of cramps and their level of sleep disturbance using a single item measure (10-point visual analogue scale from 0 to 10). They also completed the PSQI questionnaire on day 14. Patients were considered as “poor sleepers” if the PSQI score was >5/21. The criterion validity of the single-item measure (averaged over the 2-week period) was assessed using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient to determine the correlation with the PSQI. RESULTS 129 patients participated (women 67%, mean age 70 years). The single-item and the PSQI mean scores were 2.6/10 (standard deviation 2.5) and 6.1/21 (SD 3.9), respectively. Being a “poor sleeper” (47% of patients) was not statistically significantly associated with patients’ characteristics and number of cramps. The averaged single-item measure was not correlated with the PSQI score (Spearman’s rank correlation 0.08, p-value 0.51). CONCLUSIONS In this primary care sample, poor sleep quality was not associated with suffering from a higher number of nocturnal cramps, and a single-item mean score was not a valid instrument to screen for sleep disturbance among these patients.With the technical developments in neurosurgery, increasing numbers of neurosurgical implants are used in an increasingly aged population of patients with several comorbidities. Consequently, the number of neurosurgical implant-associated infections is continuously raising, resulting in significant morbidity and mortality, including disfiguring skull deformities and lack of brain protection. In this article we review infections associated with craniotomy, cranioplasty, neurostimulators, internal cerebrospinal fluid shunts, and external ventricular and lumbar cerebrospinal fluid drainages. In all implant-associated infections biofilms are involved, which are difficult to eradicate. A low number of microorganisms is sufficient to form a biofilm on the implant surface. In most infections, microorganisms of the skin flora are involved. Microorganisms reach the implant during surgery or immediately thereafter as a result of wound healing disturbances. In about two thirds of patients, implant-associated infections opriate debridement with or without implant exchange or removal, depending on the age of the biofilm and the soft tissue condition. Antimicrobial treatment includes a prolonged biofilm-active therapy, typically for 4–12 weeks. Few studies have investigated the short-term effect of personal temperature exposure on blood oxygen saturation (SpO2). We conducted this longitudinal panel study with real-time monitoring of SpO2 and environmental exposure for 3 continuous days for 20 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and 20 healthy volunteers in Hong Kong, to explore the time course (from minutes to hours) of change in SpO2 in response to temperature in elderly people. We employed a generalized additive mixed model to evaluate the acute effects of personal temperature exposure on changes in SpO2 and risk of oxygen desaturation while adjusting for seasonality, environmental co-exposures, and personal characteristics. Visible-light photocatalytic H2 production for Ti4 was measured to be 73.56 μmol/(g h), which is almost 5 times of that of Ti6 (15.16 μmol/(g h)). Results of density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that the different Ti-S coordination modes originating from the conformational disparity of the ligands are primarily responsible for the observed different photocatalytic activities. This work provides qualitative and quantitative estimates of the extent and rate of sintering as functions of nanocrystal (NC) size, temperature, and atmosphere. This review is unique in that besides summarizing important, useful data from previous studies, it also advances the field through addition of (i) improved or new models, (ii) new data summarized in original tables and figures, and (iii) new fundamental perspectives into sintering of supported metals and particularly of chemical sintering of supported Co during Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. We demonstrate how the two widely accepted sintering mechanisms are largely sequential with some overlap and highly NC-size dependent, i.e., generally, small NCs sinter rapidly by Ostwald ripening, while larger NCs sinter slowly by crystallite migration and coalescence. In addition, we demonstrate how accumulated knowledge, principles, and recent advances, discussed in this review, can be utilized in the design of supported metal NCs highly resistant to sintering. Recommendations for improving the design of sintering experiments and for new research are addressed.More than 90% of serotonin is produced in the intestine. Previous studies have shown that different protein diets significantly affect serum serotonin levels. Here, the colonic microbiota and intestinal serotonin were measured to elaborate how protein diets affect serotonin production in a mouse model. The emulsion-type sausage protein and cooked pork protein diets increased the mRNA levels of tryptophan hydroxylase 1 (Tph1) and monoamine oxidase A (Maoa) and serotonin level as well but reduced the number of enterochromaffin cells. However, the soy protein diet increased the number of enterochromaffin cells and Tph1 mRNA level but decreased the Maoa mRNA level and the serotonin content. Specific gut microbes that responded to dietary changes and affected the content of short-chain fatty acids were significantly related to serotonin-associated biomarkers. These results suggest that dietary proteins may regulate serotonin biosynthesis and catabolism by altering specific gut microbes.The lipid environment in which membrane proteins are embedded can influence their structure and function. Lipid-protein interactions and lipid-induced conformational changes necessary for protein function remain intractable in vivo using high-resolution techniques. Using Escherichia coli strains in which the normal phospholipid composition can be altered or foreign lipids can be introduced, we established the importance of membrane lipid composition for the proper folding, assembly, and function of E. coli lactose (LacY) and sucrose (CscB) permeases. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the lipid dependence for active transport remains unknown. Herein, we demonstrate that the structure and function of CscB and LacY can be modulated by the composition of the lipid environment. Using a combination of assays (transport activity of the substrate, protein topology, folding, and assembly into the membrane), we found that alterations in the membrane lipid composition lead to lipid-dependent structural changes in CscB and LacY. These changes affect the orientation of residues involved in LacY proton translocation and impact the rates of protonation and deprotonation of E325 by affecting the arrangement of transmembrane domains in the vicinity of the R302-E325 charge pair. Furthermore, the structural changes caused by changes in membrane lipid composition can be altered by a single-point mutation, highlighting the adaptability of these transporters to their environment. Altogether, our results demonstrate that direct interactions between a protein and its lipid environment uniquely contribute to membrane protein organization and function. Because members of the major facilitator superfamily present with well-conserved functional architecture, we anticipate that our findings can be extrapolated to other membrane protein transporters.

Brucellosis is an important zoonotic disease globally, with particularly high burdens in pastoral settings. While the zoonotic transmission routes for Brucella spp. are well known, the relative importance of animal contact, food-handling and consumption practices can vary. Understanding the local epidemiology of human brucellosis is important for directing veterinary and public health interventions, as well as for informing clinical diagnostic decision making. We conducted a cross-sectional study in Ijara District Hospital, north-eastern Kenya. A total of 386 individuals seeking care and reporting symptoms of febrile illness were recruited in 2011. Samples were tested for the presence of Brucella spp. using a real-time PCR (RT-PCR) and results compared to those from the test for brucellosis used at Ijara District Hospital, the febrile Brucella plate agglutination test (FBAT). Regeneration of peripheral nerves after damage correlates inversely with thrombin levels. Thrombin is not only the key regulator of the coagulation cascade but also a protease with hormone-like activities that affects various cells of the central and peripheral nervous system mainly through the protease-activated receptor 1 (PAR1). Aim of the present study was to investigate if and how thrombin could affect the axon supportive functions of SC. In particular, our results show that the activation of PAR1 in rat SC cultures with low levels of thrombin or PAR1 agonist peptides induces the release of molecules, which favor neuronal survival and neurite elongation. Conversely, the stimulation of SC with high levels of thrombin or PAR1 agonist peptides drives an opposite effect inducing SC to release factors that inhibit the extension of neurites. Moreover, high levels of thrombin administered to sciatic nerve ex vivo explants induce a dramatic change in SC morphology causing disappearance of the Cajal bands, enlargement of the Schmidt-Lanterman incisures and calcium-mediated demyelination of the paranodes. Moreover, the low-frequency THz beam retrieves an almost $ \rm TEM_00 $TEM00 Gaussian spatial distribution when the silicon filter is preceded by a large bandgap ceramic filter, which stops the pump beam, thus preventing the carrier generation in the silicon filter.We study experimentally the effect of oxide removal on the sub-bandgap photodetection in silicon waveguides at the telecom wavelength regime. Depassivating the device allows for the enhancement of the quantum efficiency by about 2-3 times. Furthermore, the propagation loss within the device is significantly reduced by the oxide removal. Measuring the device 60 days after the depassivation shows slight differences. We provide a possible explanation for these observations. Tunable visible frequency combs from a synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator are coupled into a four-mirror, dispersion-managed cavity with a finesse of 600-1400. An intracavity absorption path length enhancement greater than 190 is obtained over the entire tuning range, while preserving intracavity spectral bandwidths capable of supporting sub-200 fs pulse durations. These tunable cavity-enhanced frequency combs can find many applications in nonlinear optics and spectroscopy.

Lett.45, 1607 (2020)OPLEDP0146-959210.1364/OL.385878.We describe the cavity enhancement of frequency combs over a wide tuning range of 450-700 nm ($ \gt 7900\;\rm cm^ - 1 $>7900cm-1), covering nearly the entire visible spectrum. Tunable visible frequency combs from a synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator are coupled into a four-mirror, dispersion-managed cavity with a finesse of 600-1400. An intracavity absorption path length enhancement greater than 190 is obtained over the entire tuning range, while preserving intracavity spectral bandwidths capable of supporting sub-200 fs pulse durations.
