This paper reviews the therapeutic effects of phytomedicines with prominent effects against various factors implicated in the emergence and progression of AD.
To assess satisfaction of prosthesis users with their prostheses, and the problems they experience with the residual limb, using a checklist, in order to evaluate potential benefits of checklist use and to summarize issues and problems with the prosthesis and/or residual limb presented by prosthesis users.
Cross-sectional study.
Participants were adult trans-tibial prosthesis users (
= 82) and certified prosthetist orthotist (
= 19) experienced in fitting lower-limb prostheses.
Prosthesis users reported their reasons for consultation and factors concerning prosthesis (dis)satisfaction and residual limb problems, using a checklist. Checklist use was evaluated by certified prosthetist orthotists and prosthesis users and the significance of evaluation scores was determined.
Checklist use identified 126 issues/problems, most of which concerned prosthesis fit (33%) and pressure points on the residual limb skin (26%). Evaluation scores were significantly higher than neutral regarding the checklist helping the certified prosthetist orthotist to gather more information and to make clear with which issues the prosthesis user was dissatisfied. Prosthesis users reported that checklist use made them feel more understood by the certified prosthetist orthotist.

Clinical data demonstrate that the Oncotype DX test is able to significantly impact therapeutic decisions, reducing chemotherapy use up to 49% and supporting the use of chemotherapy (up to 12%) in potentially under-treated patients. Based on the level of clinical evidence and established clinical utility, several multigene tests have been included in the main international guidelines, with recommendations ranging from "strong" to "moderate".Malignant cells commonly use aerobic glycolysis for ATP production; this is known as the Warburg effect, where pyruvate is converted to lactate, by enzyme lactate dehydrogenase A (LDH-A). Human cervical cancer HeLa cell line and breast cancer MCF-7 cell line were used to investigate the effect of inhibition of LDH-A by sodium oxamate on cell survival and proliferation using western blot, spectrophotometry, and immunofluorescent study. There was significant reduction in LDH-A (P less then 0.001) and cell viability (P less then 0.001) in a dose-dependent mode in both HeLa and MCF-7 SO-treated cancer cells. The voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC) protein was significantly increased (P less then 0.001) in association with decreased LDH-A. The proapoptotic proteins; cytochrome C (P less then 0.001), BAX (P less then 0.001), cleaved caspase-3 (P less then 0.001), cleaved caspase-8 (P less then 0.001), and cleaved caspase-9 (P less then 0.001) were significantly increased in association with decreased LDH-A. While, the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl2 was significantly decreased (P less then 0.001) in association with decreased LDH-A. We conclude that Inhibition of LDH-A can decrease cells viability through activation of intrinsic apoptotic pathway via increased VDAC protein and inhibition of Bcl2 as well as activation of the extrinsic apoptotic pathway through activation of caspase-8.
High-risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) is thought to be associated with a higher risk of recurrence and progression. A recent study revealed that a high De Ritis ratio was a risk factor in some solid malignancies. This study examined the importance of the De Ritis ratio as a prognostic marker in high-risk NMIBC.
A total of 138 patients who were initially diagnosed with high-risk NMIBC between January 2012 to December 2016 were enrolled in this study. The criteria for the high-risk classification followed the EAU guidelines. The recurrence-free and progression-free survival of the higher and lower De Ritis ratio groups were compared. The cut-off value of the De Ritis ratio was set at 1.35, based on a receiver operator curve analysis.
The median observation period was 50.3 months. Among these patients, 32 (23.1%) patients developed recurrent disease and 15 (10.9%) patients showed progression. A multivariate analysis revealed that non-BCG treatment was an independent risk factor for recurrence, and a higher De Ritis ratio was an independent risk factor for cancer progression.

When descriptively comparing the SCL-90 and BSSI scores with those in the general Iranian population reported in previous studies, gay men reported more serious mental health symptoms, and more suicidal ideation, threats, and attempts. The decriminalization of same-sex sexual encounters and accepting social attitudes towards gay men are needed in Iran to help improve this population's mental health and reduce their suicidality.
FFQ assess habitual dietary intake and are relatively inexpensive to process, but may take up to 60 min to complete. This article describes the validation of the Flower-FFQ, which consists of four short FFQ measuring the intake of energy and macronutrients or specific (micro)nutrients/foods that can be merged into one complete daily assessment using predefined algorithms.
Participants completed the Flower-FFQ and validated regular-FFQ (n 401). Urinary N (n 242) and K excretions (n 361) were measured. We evaluated (1) group-level bias, (2) correlations and (3) cross-classification.
Observational study.
Dutch adults, 54 ± 11 (mean ± SD) years.
Flower-FFQ1, Flower-FFQ2, Flower-FFQ3 and Flower-FFQ4 were completed in ±24, 9, 8 and 9 min (±50 min total), respectively. The regular-FFQ was completed in ±43 min. Mean energy (flower v. regular 7953 v. 8718 kJ/d) and macronutrient intakes (carbohydrates 204 v. 222 g/d; protein 75 v. 76 g/d; fat 74 v. 83 g/d; ethanol 8 v. 12 g/d) were comparatively similar. Spearman correlations between Flower-FFQ and regular-FFQ ranged from 0·60 to 0·80 for macronutrients and from 0·40 to 0·80 for micronutrients and foods. For all micronutrients and foods, ≥ 78 % of the participants classified in the same/adjacent quartile. The Flower-FFQ underestimated urinary N and K excretions by 24 and 18 %; 75 and 73 % of the participants ranked in the same/adjacent quartile.

This research will determine whether phosphorylation at serine 276 of Cx35-containing gap junctions increased in the myopic chicken, whose retina is cone-dominant. Refractive errors and ocular biometric dimensions of 7-days-old chickens were determined following 12 h and 7 days induction of myopia by a -10D lens. The expression pattern and size of Cx35-positive plaques were examined in the early (12 h) and compensated stages (7 days) of lens-induced myopia (LIM). At the same time, phosphorylation at serine 276 (functional assay) of Cx35 in strata 5 (S5) of the inner plexiform layer was investigated. The axial length of the 7 days LIM eyes was significantly longer than that of non-LIM controls (P less then 0.05). Anti-phospho-Ser276 (Ser276-P)-labeled plaques were significantly increased in LIM retinas at both 12 h and 7 days. The density of Ser276-P of Cx35 was observed to increase after 12 h LIM. In the meanwhile, the areas of existing Cx35 plaques did not change. As there was more phosphorylation of connexin35 at Ser276 at both the early and late stages (12 h) and 7 days of LIM chicken retinal activity, the coupling with ACs could be increased in myopia development of the cone-dominated chicken retina.Micronutrient deficiency persists throughout the world, and although the burden is higher in low-resource settings, it is also prevalent in wealthy countries, a phenomenon termed 'hidden hunger'. Due to their high requirements for vitamins and minerals relative to their energy intake, young women and children are particularly vulnerable to hidden hunger. As they share several risk factors and impact on overlapping outcomes, we consider how deficiency of iron, iodine and vitamin D can have profound impacts on perinatal health and infant development. We review the epidemiology of these micronutrient deficiencies during pregnancy, including social, environmental and dietary risk factors. We identify the main challenges in defining nutritional status of these nutrients using validated diagnostic criteria linked with meaningful clinical outcomes. Public health strategies are urgently required to improve the overall health and nutritional status of women of reproductive age. The Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP) is a classification system that seeks to organize psychopathology using quantitative evidence - yet the current model was established by narrative review. This meta-analysis provides a quantitative synthesis of literature on transdiagnostic dimensions of psychopathology to evaluate the validity of the HiTOP framework.
Published studies estimating factor-analytic models from diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (DSM) diagnoses were screened. A total of 120,596 participants from 35 studies assessing 23 DSM diagnoses were included in the meta-analytic models. Data were pooled into a meta-analytic correlation matrix using a random effects model. Exploratory factor analyses were conducted using the pooled correlation matrix. A hierarchical structure was estimated by extracting one to five factors representing levels of the HiTOP framework, then calculating congruence coefficients between factors at sequential levels.

However, these are complex research designs and their data-intense nature makes them potentially burdensome for study participants, challenging for research teams, and costly for funding agencies. Despite growing use, the methodological literature on fully longitudinal mixed methods research is sparse and little guidance is available for researchers considering this approach. We address this gap by describing our experience with the design and implementation of a fully longitudinal mixed methods study of a dynamic phenomenon, namely, family caregiving during cancer treatment. We describe important questions and key decisions confronted while developing the research proposal, proactive strategies for study implementation, and implementation realities encountered while the study was in progress. On the basis of insights gained through real-world experience, we offer three guiding principles for researchers undertaking such a study. First, align the study design with the nature of the dynamics in the phenomenon of interest. Second, plan from the start when and how the integration of the longitudinal quantitative and qualitative data will occur. Third, employ implementation strategies that take into account the practical aspects of repeated contacts with study participants for an extended period.Recent years have seen the implementation of educational programs aimed at developing future orientation and better employability skills, mostly for people new to or returning to the job market. In a field study, we investigated the impact of a 5-day program on reintegration to civilian life on young Israeli combat soldiers' time preferences, gratitude, patriotism, and perceptions of their combat experience. However, these are complex research designs and their data-intense nature makes them potentially burdensome for study participants, challenging for research teams, and costly for funding agencies. Despite growing use, the methodological literature on fully longitudinal mixed methods research is sparse and little guidance is available for researchers considering this approach. We address this gap by describing our experience with the design and implementation of a fully longitudinal mixed methods study of a dynamic phenomenon, namely, family caregiving during cancer treatment. We describe important questions and key decisions confronted while developing the research proposal, proactive strategies for study implementation, and implementation realities encountered while the study was in progress. On the basis of insights gained through real-world experience, we offer three guiding principles for researchers undertaking such a study. First, align the study design with the nature of the dynamics in the phenomenon of interest. Second, plan from the start when and how the integration of the longitudinal quantitative and qualitative data will occur. Third, employ implementation strategies that take into account the practical aspects of repeated contacts with study participants for an extended period.Recent years have seen the implementation of educational programs aimed at developing future orientation and better employability skills, mostly for people new to or returning to the job market. In a field study, we investigated the impact of a 5-day program on reintegration to civilian life on young Israeli combat soldiers' time preferences, gratitude, patriotism, and perceptions of their combat experience. Questionnaires administered before and after the program revealed a positive effect on future orientation but a negative effect on gratitude and perceptions of the combat experience. There is an increasing interest in using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as a tool for precision medicine in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study investigated the feasibility of MRI scanning in a large comprehensive, inclusive and test heavy clinical trial for children (aged 3-12 years) with ASD, without functioning constraints for participation. Of the 71 participants enrolled who consented to the MRI, 24 participants (38%) successfully completed an MRI scan at baseline along with other assessments. This scanning followed a familiarization procedure at two preceding visits. At post-treatment, 21 participants successfully completed the MRI scan. This study highlights the challenge of completing MRI assessments in ASD populations when conducted as one of a number of tests in a clinical trial.

With the aim of dissecting the genetic architecture of FL in flax, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) was performed on 200 accessions of the flax core collection evaluated in four environments. Two single-locus and six multi-locus models were applied using 70,935 curated single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. A total of 40 quantitative trait nucleotides (QTNs) associated with 27 quantitative trait loci (QTL) were identified in at least two environments. The number of QTL with positive-effect alleles in accessions was significantly correlated with FL (r = 0.77 to 0.82), indicating principally additive gene actions. Nine QTL were significant in at least three of the four environments accounting for 3.06-14.71% of FL variation. These stable QTL spanned regions that harbored 27 Arabidopsis thaliana and Oryza sativa FL-related orthologous genes including FLOWERING LOCUS T (Lus10013532), FLOWERING LOCUS D (Lus10028817), transcriptional regulator SUPERMAN (Lus10021215), and gibberellin 2-beta-dioxygenase 2 (Lus10037816). In silico gene expression analysis of the 27 FL candidate gene orthologous suggested that they might play roles in the transition from vegetative to reproductive phase, flower development and fertilization. Our results provide new insights into the QTL architecture of flowering time in flax, identify potential candidate genes for further studies, and demonstrate the effectiveness of combining different GWAS models for the genetic dissection of complex traits.One of the most frequent symptoms of COVID-19 is the loss of smell and taste. Based on the lack of expression of the virus entry proteins in olfactory receptor neurons, it was originally assumed that the new coronavirus (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, SARS-CoV-2) does not infect olfactory neurons. Recent studies have reported otherwise, opening the possibility that the virus can directly infect the brain by traveling along the olfactory nerve. Multiple animal models have been employed to assess mechanisms and routes of brain infection of SARS-CoV-2, often with conflicting results. We here review the current evidence for an olfactory route to brain infection and conclude that the case for infection of olfactory neurons is weak, based on animal and human studies. Consistent brain infection after SARS-CoV-2 inoculation in mouse models is only seen when the virus entry proteins are expressed abnormally, and the timeline and progression of rare neuro-invasion in these and in other animal models points to alternative routes to the brain, other than along the olfactory projections. COVID-19 patients can be assured that loss of smell does not necessarily mean that the SARS-CoV-2 virus has gained access to and has infected their brains.
Emergency laparotomy (EL) is a high-risk surgical procedure associated with considerable morbidity and mortality around the world. A reliable risk-assessment tool that is specific to patients undergoing EL allows the early identification of high-risk patients and enables appropriate healthcare resource allocation. The objective of this study was to compare the commonly used Portsmouth-physiologic and operative severity score for the enumeration of mortality and morbidity (P-POSSUM) with the recently developed National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA) score in terms of their accuracy for identifying patients at increased risk of 30-day mortality in a predominantly Asian population.
Physiological and operative data from a prospectively collected audit of adult patients undergoing EL in 2018 and 2019 across two tertiary hospitals in Singapore were used to retrospectively calculate both the P-POSSUM and NELA scores for each patient encounter. This was then compared to actual mortality rates to determine eachPOSSUM score as a model to distinguish between high- and low-risk patients undergoing EL.Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) with isolated deletion of chromosome 5q (MDS del5q) is a distinct subtype of MDS with quite favorable prognosis and excellent response to treatment with lenalidomide. Still, a relevant percentage of patients do not respond to lenalidomide and even experience progression to acute myeloid leukemia (AML). In this study, we aimed to investigate whether global DNA methylation patterns could predict response to lenalidomide. Genome-wide DNA methylation analysis using Illumina 450k methylation arrays was performed on n=51 patients with MDS del5q who were uniformly treated with lenalidomide in a prospective multicenter trial of the German MDS study group. To study potential direct effects of lenalidomide on DNA methylation, 17 paired samples pre- and post-treatment were analyzed. Our results revealed no relevant effect of lenalidomide on methylation status. Furthermore, methylation patterns prior to therapy could not predict lenalidomide response. However, methylation clustering identified a group of patients with a trend towards inferior overall survival.

Listeria monocytogenes can regulate and fine-tune gene expression, to adapt to diverse stress conditions encountered during foodborne transmission. To further understand the contributions of alternative sigma (σ) factors to the regulation of L. monocytogenes gene expression, RNA-Seq was performed on L. monocytogenes strain 10403S and five isogenic mutants (four strains bearing in-frame null mutations in three out of four alternative σ factor genes, ΔCHL, ΔBHL, ΔBCL, and ΔBCH, and one strain bearing null mutations in all four genes, ΔBCHL), grown to stationary phase. Our data showed that 184, 35, 34, and 20 genes were positively regulated by σB, σL, σH, and σC (posterior probability > 0.9 and Fold Change (FC) > 5.0), respectively. Moreover, σB-dependent genes showed the highest FC (based on comparisons between the ΔCHL and the ΔBCHL strain), with 44 genes showing an FC > 100; only four σL-dependent, and no σH- or σC-dependent genes showed FC >100. While σB-regulated genes identified in this study are involved in stress-associated functions and metabolic pathways, σL appears to largely regulate genes involved in a few specific metabolic pathways, including positive regulation of operons encoding phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP)-dependent phosphotransferase systems (PTSs). Overall, our data show that (i) σB and σL directly and indirectly regulate genes involved in several energy metabolism-related functions; (ii) alternative σ factors are involved in complex regulatory networks and appear to have epistatic effects in stationary phase cells; and (iii) σB regulates multiple stress response pathways, while σL and σH positively regulate a smaller number of specific pathways.Abnormal changes of the microvasculature are reported to be key evidence of the development of several critical diseases, including cancer, progressive kidney disease, and atherosclerotic plaque. In the current review, we discuss cellular events involving the prototypical Rho GTPases (RhoA, Rac1, and Cdc42) in podocytes, with particular focus on the subcellular compartments where the signaling events occur. We also showed that laminarin, lichenan, and glucan from baker's yeast, as well as β-1,3-glucan from Euglema gracilisas, inhibit the osteoclast formation in bone marrow cells. Consistent with these findings, systemic and local administration of β-glucan derived from Aureobasidium pullulans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae suppressed bone resorption in vivo.
Listeria monocytogenes can regulate and fine-tune gene expression, to adapt to diverse stress conditions encountered during foodborne transmission. To further understand the contributions of alternative sigma (σ) factors to the regulation of L. monocytogenes gene expression, RNA-Seq was performed on L. monocytogenes strain 10403S and five isogenic mutants (four strains bearing in-frame null mutations in three out of four alternative σ factor genes, ΔCHL, ΔBHL, ΔBCL, and ΔBCH, and one strain bearing null mutations in all four genes, ΔBCHL), grown to stationary phase. Our data showed that 184, 35, 34, and 20 genes were positively regulated by σB, σL, σH, and σC (posterior probability > 0.9 and Fold Change (FC) > 5.0), respectively. Moreover, σB-dependent genes showed the highest FC (based on comparisons between the ΔCHL and the ΔBCHL strain), with 44 genes showing an FC > 100; only four σL-dependent, and no σH- or σC-dependent genes showed FC >100. While σB-regulated genes identified in this study are involved in stress-associated functions and metabolic pathways, σL appears to largely regulate genes involved in a few specific metabolic pathways, including positive regulation of operons encoding phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP)-dependent phosphotransferase systems (PTSs). Overall, our data show that (i) σB and σL directly and indirectly regulate genes involved in several energy metabolism-related functions; (ii) alternative σ factors are involved in complex regulatory networks and appear to have epistatic effects in stationary phase cells; and (iii) σB regulates multiple stress response pathways, while σL and σH positively regulate a smaller number of specific pathways.Abnormal changes of the microvasculature are reported to be key evidence of the development of several critical diseases, including cancer, progressive kidney disease, and atherosclerotic plaque. AI and its machine learning algorithms have proven useful in several fields of medicine, including medically assisted reproduction. The purpose of the study was to construct several predictive models based on clinical data and select the best models to predict IUI procedure outcomes.
Clinical data (patient baseline characteristics, sperm quality, hormonal status, and cycle data) from 1029 IUI procedures performed in 413 couples stimulated by clomiphene citrate, letrozole, or gonadotropins were used to build several models to predict clinical pregnancy. The models included ANN, random forest, PLS, SVM, and linear models using the caret package in R. The models were evaluated using ROC analysis by means of random CV on test data.
Out of the best performing models, the random forest model achieved an AUC of 0.66, a sensitivity of 0.432, and a specificity of 0.756. This performance was followed by the PLS model, which achieved a sensitivity of 0.459 and specificity of 0.734. The other models achieved significantly lower AUCs. When adjusting the predictive cutoff value, confusion matrices show that clinical pregnancy is twice as likely in the case of positive prediction.
Among the compared methods, the random forest and PLS models demonstrated superior performance in predicting the clinical outcome of IUI. With additional research and clinical validation, AI methods may be successfully used in improving patient selection and consequently lead to better clinical results.

We aimed to investigate the prognostic potential of these patterns in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), and specifically if the value was greater in patients with ischemic etiology. A total of 884 patients with HFrEF (66 ± 12 years, male 73%, mean EF 28 ± 9%) underwent speckle tracking echocardiography. Of these, 61% suffered from ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM). Patients were followed for all-cause mortality. We assessed myocardial lengthening during early systole, defined by the early systolic strain index (ESI) [-100x (peak positive strain/maximal strain)] and myocardial shortening after aortic valve closure, defined by the postsystolic strain index (PSI) [100x (postsystolic strain-peak systolic strain)/maximal strain]. During median follow-up of 3.4 [interquartile range 1.9 to 4.8] years, 132 patients (15%) died. ICM modified the relationship between ESI and all-cause mortality (P interaction = 0.008), but not for PSI (P interaction = 0.13). When assessing patients with ICM by Cox proportional hazards models, per 1% increase in ESI (HR 1.09 [1.04 to 1.15], P less then 0.001) and PSI (HR 1.02 [1.01 to 1.03], P = 0.002) were associated with all-cause mortality. However, in multivariable models adjusted for clinical, invasive and echocardiographic information, only ESI was a predictor of the endpoint (HR 1.07 [1.00 to 1.13], P = 0.023). In patients with no ICM, neither ESI (HR 0.99 per 1% increase [0.90 to 1.09], P = 0.86) nor PSI (HR 1.00 per 1% increase [0.99 to 1.02], P = 0.88) were associated with all-cause mortality. Our results indicate that in HFrEF patients with ischemic etiology, the ESI may provide some information on prognosis, whereas the prognostic value of PSI is reduced. In patients with HFrEF and no prior exposure to ischemia, the prognostic value of both deformational patterns is reduced.
To provide a comparative analysis of short-term outcomes after open, laparoscopic, and robotic-assisted (RAS) ventral incisional hernia (VIH) repairs that include subject-reported pain medication usage and hernia-related quality of life (QOL).
Subjects were ≥ 18years old and underwent elective open, laparoscopic or RAS VIH repair without myofascial release. Perioperative clinical outcomes through 30days were analyzed as were prescription pain medication use and subject-reported responses to the HerQLes Abdominal QOL questionnaire. Observed differences in baseline characteristics were controlled using a weighted propensity score analysis to obviate potential selection bias (inverse probability of treatment weighting, IPTW). A p value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Three hundred and seventy-one subjects (RAS, n = 159; open, n = 130; laparoscopic, n = 82) were enrolled in the study across 17 medical institutions within the United States. Compared with single-person households in rural areas, those in mid-sized and metropolitan cities tend to be more familiar with and frequently refer to nutrition labels, skip breakfast, and experience food insecurity. Regional differences are found in the associations of dietary factors and behavior with obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. The use of nutritional fact labels is associated with obesity and hypertension in single-person households in rural areas, and the degree of association between food insecurity and diabetes is highest among single-person households in metropolitan areas. Our findings suggest that policies for improving unhealthy dietary factors by regional type are needed to reduce regional health disparities among single-person households in Korea.The purpose of this study was to use agar as a multifunctional encapsulating material to allow drug and ferromagnetism to be jointly delivered in one nanoparticle. We successfully encapsulated both Fe3O4 and doxorubicin (DOX) with agar as the drug carrier to obtain DOX-Fe3O4@agar. The iron oxide nanoparticles encapsulated in the carrier maintained good saturation of magnetization (41.9 emu/g) and had superparamagnetism. The heating capacity test showed that the specific absorption rate (SAR) value was 18.9 ± 0.5 W/g, indicating that the ferromagnetic nanoparticles encapsulated in the gel still maintained good heating capacity. Moreover, the magnetocaloric temperature could reach 43 °C in a short period of five minutes. In addition, DOX-Fe3O4@agar reached a maximum release rate of 85% ± 3% in 56 min under a neutral pH 7.0 to simulate the intestinal environment. We found using fluorescent microscopy that DOX entered HT-29 human colon cancer cells and reduced cell viability by 66%. When hyperthermia was induced with an auxiliary external magnetic field, cancer cells could be further killed, with a viability of only 15.4%. These results show that agar is an efficient multiple-drug carrier, and allows controlled drug release. The uniaxial tensile and flexural tensile properties of the steel-polyvinyl alcohol fiber-calcium carbonate whisker (CW) multi-scale fiber reinforced cement matrix composites (MSFRCs) under high temperatures are studied, including strength, deformation capacity, energy dissipation capacity, and its ability to be assessed through the empirical calculation method. The study showed that with the increase of the treatment temperature, the MSFRC residual bending strength, bending toughness, and tensile strength decreased overall, but the decline was slow at 600 °C. The peak flexural deflection and peak tensile strain of MSFRC first reduced and then increased with the increase of the temperature. As the temperature increased, the nominal stiffness of MSFRC bending and straight gradually reduced, and the rate of decline was faster than that of its strength. However, the uniaxial tensile properties were more sensitive to the temperature and degraded more rapidly. A quantitative relationship was established between MSFRC residual bending, tensile strength, and temperature. A comparison with existing research results shows that MSFRC has achieved an ideal effect of high temperature resistance. The multi-scale hybrid fiber system significantly alleviates the deterioration of cement-based composite's mechanical properties under high temperatures. With the help of an optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM), the high temperature influence mechanism on the uniaxial tensile and flexural properties of MSFRC was revealed.Iron oxide nanoparticle (IONP) therapy has diverse health benefits but high doses or prolonged therapy might induce oxidative cellular injuries especially in the brain. Therefore, we conducted the current study to investigate the protective role of quercetin supplementation against the oxidative alterations induced in the brains of rats due to IONPs. Forty adult male albino rats were allocated into equal five groups; the control received a normal basal diet, the IONP group was intraperitoneally injected with IONPs of 50 mg/kg body weight (B.W.) and quercetin-treated groups had IONPs + Q25, IONPs + Q50 and IONPs + Q100 that were orally supplanted with quercetin by doses of 25, 50 and 100 mg quercetin/kg B.W. daily, respectively, administrated with the same dose of IONPs for 30 days. IONPs induced significant increases in malondialdehyde (MDA) and significantly decreased reduced glutathione (GSH) and oxidized glutathione (GSSG). Consequently, IONPs significantly induced severe brain tissue injuries due to the iron deposition leading to oxidative alterations with significant increases in brain creatine phosphokinase (CPK) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE).

Among the total study population, 12.21% occupy single-person households, and 47.5%, 25.1%, and 27.4% of those single-person households are in rural areas, mid-sized cities, and metropolitan areas, respectively. Compared with single-person households in rural areas, those in mid-sized and metropolitan cities tend to be more familiar with and frequently refer to nutrition labels, skip breakfast, and experience food insecurity. Regional differences are found in the associations of dietary factors and behavior with obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. The use of nutritional fact labels is associated with obesity and hypertension in single-person households in rural areas, and the degree of association between food insecurity and diabetes is highest among single-person households in metropolitan areas. Our findings suggest that policies for improving unhealthy dietary factors by regional type are needed to reduce regional health disparities among single-person households in Korea.The purpose of this study was to use agar as a multifunctional encapsulating material to allow drug and ferromagnetism to be jointly delivered in one nanoparticle. We successfully encapsulated both Fe3O4 and doxorubicin (DOX) with agar as the drug carrier to obtain DOX-Fe3O4@agar. The iron oxide nanoparticles encapsulated in the carrier maintained good saturation of magnetization (41.9 emu/g) and had superparamagnetism. The heating capacity test showed that the specific absorption rate (SAR) value was 18.9 ± 0.5 W/g, indicating that the ferromagnetic nanoparticles encapsulated in the gel still maintained good heating capacity. Moreover, the magnetocaloric temperature could reach 43 °C in a short period of five minutes. The uniaxial tensile and flexural tensile properties of the steel-polyvinyl alcohol fiber-calcium carbonate whisker (CW) multi-scale fiber reinforced cement matrix composites (MSFRCs) under high temperatures are studied, including strength, deformation capacity, energy dissipation capacity, and its ability to be assessed through the empirical calculation method. The study showed that with the increase of the treatment temperature, the MSFRC residual bending strength, bending toughness, and tensile strength decreased overall, but the decline was slow at 600 °C. The peak flexural deflection and peak tensile strain of MSFRC first reduced and then increased with the increase of the temperature. As the temperature increased, the nominal stiffness of MSFRC bending and straight gradually reduced, and the rate of decline was faster than that of its strength. However, the uniaxial tensile properties were more sensitive to the temperature and degraded more rapidly. A quantitative relationship was established between MSFRC residual bending, tensile strength, and temperature. A comparison with existing research results shows that MSFRC has achieved an ideal effect of high temperature resistance. To better understand Arpin regulation in the cell, we looked for its interacting partners and identified both Tankyrase 1 and 2 (TNKS) using a yeast two-hybrid screening and coimmunoprecipitation with full-length Arpin as bait. Arpin interacts with ankyrin repeats of TNKS through a C-terminal-binding site on its acidic tail, which overlaps with the Arp2/3-binding site. Arpin was found to dissolve the liquid-liquid phase separation of TNKS upon overexpression. To uncouple the interactions of Arpin with TNKS and Arp2/3, we introduced point mutations in the Arpin tail and attempted to rescue the increased migration persistence of the Arpin knockout cells using random plasmid integration or compensating knock-ins at the ARPIN locus. Arpin mutations impairing interactions with either Arp2/3 or TNKS were insufficient to fully abolish Arpin activity. We present four cases of patients with massive edemas of lower limbs at different times after SCI undergoing treatment in the Department of Rehabilitation, University Hospital in Bydgoszcz, Poland. All patients had a lack of pain sensation in the lower limbs and significantly elevated levels of D-dimer. In two cases, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and intramuscular hematomas (IHs) were diagnosed. IHs were probably a consequence of antithrombotic treatments implemented due to the occurrence of DVT. Heterotopic ossification (HO) was diagnosed in a third case, and, in another patient, who was hospitalized for the longest period after injury, we found humeral bone fractures. Heterotopic ossification, intramuscular haematomas, and bone fractures of the lower limb can mimic DVT. Here, we build a complex network based on directed HVG technique applied to magnetic field fluctuations time series obtained from Particle In Cell (PIC) simulations of a magnetized collisionless plasma to distinguish the degree distributions and calculate the Kullback-Leibler Divergence (KLD) as a measure of relative entropy of data sets produced by processes that are not in equilibrium. First, we analyze the connectivity probability distribution for the undirected version of HVG finding how the Kappa distribution for low values of κ tends to be an uncorrelated time series, while the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution shows a correlated stochastic processes behavior. Subsequently, we investigate the degree of temporary irreversibility of magnetic fluctuations that are self-generated by the plasma, comparing the case of a thermal plasma (described by a Maxwell-Botzmann velocity distribution function) with non-thermal Kappa distributions. We have shown that the KLD associated to the HVG is able to distinguish the level of reversibility that is associated to the thermal equilibrium in the plasma, because the dissipative degree of the system increases as the value of κ parameter decreases and the distribution function departs from the Maxwell-Boltzmann equilibrium.

Here, we build a complex network based on directed HVG technique applied to magnetic field fluctuations time series obtained from Particle In Cell (PIC) simulations of a magnetized collisionless plasma to distinguish the degree distributions and calculate the Kullback-Leibler Divergence (KLD) as a measure of relative entropy of data sets produced by processes that are not in equilibrium. First, we analyze the connectivity probability distribution for the undirected version of HVG finding how the Kappa distribution for low values of κ tends to be an uncorrelated time series, while the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution shows a correlated stochastic processes behavior. Subsequently, we investigate the degree of temporary irreversibility of magnetic fluctuations that are self-generated by the plasma, comparing the case of a thermal plasma (described by a Maxwell-Botzmann velocity distribution function) with non-thermal Kappa distributions. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) has often been used as a nondestructive imaging alternative. However, published CLSM-derived image analysis protocols use arbitrary signal intensity cutoffs and provide minimal information regarding thickness variability across imaged surfaces. To address the aforementioned limitations, we present a standardized, user-independent CLSM image acquisition and analysis approach developed as a custom ImageJ macro and validated with collagen-based scaffolds. In the process, we also quantify thickness discrepancies in collagen-based scaffolds between CLSM and EM techniques, further illustrating the need for improved strategies. Employing the same image acquisition protocol, we also demonstrate that this approach can be used to estimate the surface roughness of the same scaffolds without the use of specialized instrumentation.
It is currently unknown whether exergaming is efficacious in people with major neurocognitive disorder (****) residing in long-term care facilities. This pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) explored the efficacy of a stepping exergame program on gait speed, balance, mobility, reaction time, cognitive and neuropsychiatric outcomes, quality of life, and daily life functioning in people with **** residing in long-term care facilities.
Participants were randomly assigned to 8weeks, three times weekly, 15 min of exergaming versus watching preferred music videos. The exergame device consisted of a pressure-sensitive step training platform on which participants performed stepping movements to play the games. The device automatically adapted the training level to the participants' capabilities. The Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), step reaction time test (SRTT), Montréal Cognitive Assessment (****), Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI), Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia (CSDD), Dementia Quality oed large effect sizes in the exergame group. The mean attendance rate was 82.9% in the exergame group and 73.7% in the music control group. There were no study-related adverse events reported by the participants, nor observed by the research team.
The findings of this pilot RCT suggest that an individually adapted exergame training improves lower extremity functioning, cognitive functioning and step reaction time and symptoms of depression in inpatients with **** residing in long-term care facilities.

The hospital-adapted A1 group of Enterococcus faecium remains an organism of significant concern in the context of drug-resistant hospital-associated infections. How this pathogen evolves and disseminates remains poorly understood.
A large, globally representative collection of short-read genomic data from the hospital-associated A1 group of Enterococcus faecium was assembled (n= 973). We analysed, using a novel analysis approach, global diversity in terms of both the dynamics of the accessory genome and homologous recombination among conserved genes.
Two main modes of genomic evolution continue to shape E. faecium the acquisition and loss of genes, including antimicrobial resistance genes, through mobile genetic elements including plasmids, and homologous recombination of the core genome. These events lead to new clones emerging at the local level, followed by the erosion of signals of clonality through recombination, and in some identifiable cases producing new clonal clusters. These patterns lead to new, emerging lineages which are able to spread globally over relatively short timeframes.
The ability of A1 E. faecium to continually present new combinations of genes for potential selection suggests that controlling this pathogen will remain challenging but establishing a framework for understanding genomic evolution is likely to aid in tracking the threats posed by newly emerging lineages.

Liquid state theories have emerged as a numerically efficient alternative to costly molecular dynamics simulations of electron transfer reactions in solution. In a recent paper [Jeanmairet et al., Chem. Sci. 10, 2130-2143 (2019)], we introduced the framework to compute the energy gap, free energy profile, and reorganization free energy using molecular density functional theory. However, this technique, as other molecular liquid state theories, overestimates the bulk pressure of the fluid. Because of the very high pressure, the predicted free energy is dramatically exaggerated. Several attempts were made to fix this issue, either based on simple a posteriori correction or by introducing bridge terms. By studying two model half reactions in water, Cl → Cl+ and Cl → Cl-, we assess the correctness of these two types of corrections to study electron transfer reactions. We found that a posteriori correction, because it violates the Variational principle, leads to an inconsistency in the definition of the reorganization free energy and should not be used to study electron transfer reactions. A series of new monolith phases are obtained from the compressed DW-BNNT bundles, whose structures can be well retained even after releasing the pressure. The bonding characters; electronic, optical, and mechanical properties; and Raman signature of these monolith phases are elucidated, which provide essential guidance for synthesis of new boron nitride materials with unprecedented properties for technological applications.The single atom alloy of AgPd has been found to be a promising catalyst for the selective hydrogenation of acrolein. It is also known that the formation of Pd islands on the surface will greatly reduce the selectivity of the reaction. As a result, the surface segregation and aggregation of Pd on the AgPd surface under reaction conditions of selective hydrogenation of acrolein are of great interest. In this work, we lay out a workflow that can predict the surface segregation and aggregation of Pd on a FCC(111) AgPd surface with and without the presence of acrolein. We use machine learning surrogate models to predict the AgPd bulk energy, AgPd slab energy, and acrolein adsorption energy on AgPd slabs. Then, we use the semi-grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation to predict the surface segregation and aggregation under different bulk Pd concentrations. Under vacuum conditions, our method predicts that only trace amount of Pd will exist on the surface at Pd bulk concentrations less than 20%. Despite this, its determination from both theory and experiment is still in its infancy and existing systems usually exhibit very tiny magnitudes. We derive analytical formulas that perfectly reproduce both the nature and the magnitude of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction calculated using state-of-the-art ab initio calculations performed on model bicopper(II) complexes. We also study which geometrical structures/ligand-field forces would enable one to control the magnitude and the orientation of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vector in order to guide future synthesis of molecules or materials. This article provides an understanding of its microscopic origin and proposes recipes to increase its magnitude. We show that (i) the on-site mixings of 3d orbitals rule the orientation and magnitude of this interaction, (ii) increased values can be obtained by choosing more covalent complexes, and (iii) huge values (∼1000 cm-1) and controlled orientations could be reached by approaching structures exhibiting on-site first-order SOC, i.e., displaying an "unquenched orbital momentum."
