A deeper understanding of the psychological empowerment process of people with cancer can provide improved practical strategies for healthcare professionals to assist the patients in maintaining hope and overcoming difficulties. This study aimed to describe, interpret, and understand the phenomenon of the psychological empowerment process related to cancer from the perspectives of people with cancer and oncology nurses.
The present descriptive qualitative design study was conducted between May 2017 and August 2017, in the oncology clinics of a university hospital. A purposive sampling method was applied to recruit adult patients diagnosed with different types and stages of cancer. The semi-structured interviews were conducted with thirteen patients and sixteen nurses. The data were transcribed, themes were identified, and the COREQ (Consolidated criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research) Checklist was used to ensure quality reporting in this study.
This study categorized quotes of patients and nurses into four main themes including "gains and losses", "meaning of life", "presence and contact", and "need to be understood". Both patients and nurses shared similar thoughts toward the factors associated with the psychological empowerment process during the cancer experience.
Being aware of patients' requirements along with raising effective support to help them grow stronger while preventing the disparity between the support that patients require and receive are some of the aspects that need to be considered for the provision and organization of healthcare services related to the psychological empowerment of people with cancer.

On D8, the P4 implant was removed and PGF2α and estradiol cypionate were administered to all animals. Subsequently, cows were randomly assigned to three groups and eCG was administered to Groups 1, 2, and 3 in doses of 300 (im); 100 (im); and 100 (Baihui acupoint) IUs, respectively. The B-mode and power-flow US cineloops were performed to assess follicular dynamics and evaluate various morphological and vascular characteristics of the corpus luteum. Blood samples were collected to quantify serum P4 concentrations. There were no differences between the ovulation synchronization treatment regimens for all follicular dynamic variables tested; however, cows in Group 3 differed from Group 2 having a larger follicle diameter (FD) on D10 (P = 0.06) and larger preovulatory FD (P = 0.09), as well as a blood perfusion area of the dominant follicle wall on D8 (P = 0.07). There were no differences in responses to the ovulation synchronization treatment regimens for the luteal variables evaluated subsequent to ovulation. In conclusion, the Baihui acupoint was effective as an alternative route for eCG dose reduction when FTAI treatment regimens were imposed without detrimentally affecting values for reproductive variables.In horses, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is produced by embryos around Day 5 post-ovulation; PGE2 functions directly at the oviduct promoting embryo transport into the uterus. Successful navigation of the social environment is dependent on a number of social cognitive processes, including mentalizing and resistance to peer influence. These processes continue to develop during adolescence, a time of significant social change, and are underpinned by regions of the social brain that continue to mature structurally and functionally into adulthood. In this review, we describe how mentalizing, peer influence, and emotion regulation capacities develop to aid the navigation of the social environment during adolescence. Heightened susceptibility to peer influence and hypersensitivity to social rejection in adolescence increase the likelihood of both risky and prosocial behavior in the presence of peers. Developmental differences in mentalizing and emotion regulation, and the corticosubcortical circuits that underpin these processes, might put adolescents at risk for developing mental health problems. We suggest how interventions aimed at improving prosocial behavior and emotion regulation abilities hold promise in reducing the risk of poor mental health as adolescents navigate the changes in their social environment.
The effects of intranasal oxytocin and placebo on hyperphagia and repetitive behaviors were compared in children and adolescents with Prader Willi Syndrome (PWS).
Children and adolescents with PWS were enrolled in an 8-week double-blind placebo-controlled intranasal oxytocin randomized trial. Twenty-three (23) subjects were assigned to oxytocin (N=11) or placebo (N=12). Hyperphagia was measured with the Hyperphagia Questionnaire (HQ), and repetitive behavior was measured with Repetitive Behavior Scale- Revised (RBS-R).
There were modest significant treatment by-time interactions indicating reduction in hyperphagia and repetitive behaviors across time for placebo but no reduction for oxytocin. Total HQ score showed a greater average reduction of 1.81 points/week for the placebo group vs. oxytocin, with maximum reduction at week 4. There were also greater reductions on HQ-Drive and HQ-Behavior subscales on placebo vs. oxytocin. RBS-R subscales followed similar patterns to the HQ, with a significantly greater reduction in sameness subscale behaviors (average 0.825 points/week) in the placebo group compared to the oxytocin group. Oxytocin was well tolerated, and the only adverse event that was both more common and possibly related to oxytocin vs. placebo was nocturia (n=1 vs 0).

Smaller social network size, diminished social skills, and loneliness are highly prevalent. Existing, gold-standard assessments of social impairment in SZ often rely on self-reported information that depends on retrospective recall and detailed accounts of complex social behaviors. This is particularly problematic in people with SZ given characteristic cognitive impairments and reduced insight. Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA; repeated self-reports completed in the context of daily life) allows for the measurement of social behavior as it occurs in vivo, yet still relies on participant input. Momentary characterization of behavior using smartphone sensors (e.g., GPS, microphone) may also provide ecologically valid indicators of social functioning. In the current study we tested associations between both active (e.g., EMA-reported number of interactions) and passive (GPS-based mobility, conversations captured by microphone) smartphone-based measures of social activity and measures of social functioning and loneliness to examine the promise of such measures for understanding social impairment in SZ. Our results indicate that passive markers of mobility were more consistently associated with EMA measures of social behavior in controls than in people with SZ. Furthermore, dispositional loneliness showed associations with mobility metrics in both groups, while general social functioning was less related to these metrics. Finally, interactions detected in the ambient audio were more tied to social functioning in SZ than in controls. Findings speak to the promise of smartphone-based digital phenotyping as an approach to understanding objective markers of social activity in people with and without schizophrenia.
Suicide is a serious public health problem, including among U.S. Army personnel. There is great interest in discovering objective predictors of suicide and non-fatal suicidal behaviors. The current study examined the association between neurocognitive functioning and pre-military history of suicide attempts (SA) and post-enlistment onset of SA.
New Soldiers reporting for Basic Combat Training (N=38,507) completed a comprehensive computerized neurocognitive assessment battery and self-report questionnaires. A subset of Soldiers (n=6216) completed a follow-up survey, including assessment of lifetime SA, 3-7 years later.
Six hundred eighty-nine Soldiers indicated lifetime SA at baseline and 210 Soldiers indicated new-onset SA at follow-up. Regression analyses, adjusted for demographic variables, revealed significant bivariate associations between neurocognitive performance on measures of sustained attention, impulsivity, working memory, and emotion recognition and lifetime SA at baseline. In a multivariable model including each of these measures as predictors, poorer impulse control and quicker response times on an emotion recognition measure were significantly and independently associated with increased odds of lifetime SA. A second model predicted new-onset SA at follow-up for Soldiers who did not indicate a history of SA at baseline. Poorer impulse control on a measure of sustained attention was predictive of new-onset SA.
Effect sizes are small and of unlikely clinical predictive utility.

A distributed trigger counting (DTC) problem is to detect w triggers in the distributed system consisting of n nodes. DTC algorithms can be used for monitoring systems using sensors to detect a significant global change. When designing an efficient DTC algorithm, the following goals should be considered; minimizing the whole number of exchanged messages used for counting triggers and even distribution of communication loads among nodes. In this paper, we present an efficient DTC algorithm, DDR-coin (Deterministic Detection of Randomly generated coins). The message complexity-the total number of exchanged messages-of DDR-coin is O(nlogn(w/n)) in average. MaxRcvLoad-the maximum number of received messages to detect w triggers in each node-is O(logn(w/n)) on average. DDR-coin is not an exact algorithm; even though w triggers are received by the n nodes, it can fail to raise an alarm with a negligible probability. However, DDR-coin is more efficient than exact DTC algorithms on average and the gap between those is increased for larger n. We implemented the prototype of the proposed scheme using NetLogo 6.1.1. We confirmed that experimental results are close to our mathematical analysis. Compared with the previous schemes-TreeFill, CoinRand, and RingRand- DDR-coin shows smaller message complexity and MaxRcvLoad.The PFPE-PEG-PFPE (Perfluoropolyether-polyethylene glycol-perfluoropolyether) surfactant has been used in droplet-based microfluidics and is known to provide high droplet stability and biocompatibility. Since this surfactant ensures the stability of droplets, droplet-based microfluidic systems have been widely used to encapsulate and analyze various biological components at the single-molecule scale, including viruses, bacteria, nucleic acids and proteins. In this study, we experimentally confirmed that gas crosstalk occurred between droplets formed by fluorinated oil and the PFPE-PEG-PFPE surfactant. E. coli K-12 bacterial cells were encapsulated with Luria-Bertani broth within droplets for the cultivation, and gas crosstalk was identified with neighboring droplets that contain phenol red. A distributed trigger counting (DTC) problem is to detect w triggers in the distributed system consisting of n nodes. DTC algorithms can be used for monitoring systems using sensors to detect a significant global change. When designing an efficient DTC algorithm, the following goals should be considered; minimizing the whole number of exchanged messages used for counting triggers and even distribution of communication loads among nodes. In this paper, we present an efficient DTC algorithm, DDR-coin (Deterministic Detection of Randomly generated coins). The message complexity-the total number of exchanged messages-of DDR-coin is O(nlogn(w/n)) in average. MaxRcvLoad-the maximum number of received messages to detect w triggers in each node-is O(logn(w/n)) on average. DDR-coin is not an exact algorithm; even though w triggers are received by the n nodes, it can fail to raise an alarm with a negligible probability. However, DDR-coin is more efficient than exact DTC algorithms on average and the gap between those is increased for larger n. We implemented the prototype of the proposed scheme using NetLogo 6.1.1. We confirmed that experimental results are close to our mathematical analysis. Method ISL was tested in 26 individuals with TBI and 28 healthy controls using the O-SRT task. Mixed analyses of variance were conducted to analyze RT and CA in three phases learning, interference, and recovery from interference. The average number of stucks was compared with an independent-samples t test. Finally, Pearson correlation analyses of ISL with demographic, clinical, and WM capacity measures were performed. Results Based on RT, ISL was impaired in the TBI group. However, CA demonstrated improved learning, but with deficits in the interference and recovery from interference phases. Stucks were more frequent in the TBI group, which affected RT and CA measures. Neither demographic nor clinical factors were associated with ISL. Verbal, but not spatial, WM capacity was impaired in the TBI group, and spatial WM capacity positively correlated with ISL in controls only. Conclusion We suggest that the high TBI group stuck rate can be attributed to lack of initiative and/or conservative response bias associated with TBI, and view it as a main cause leading to deficits in ISL. Experiments 2 and 3 probed the crossmodal influences of valence on subsequent semantic processing by using short music clips as primes and valenced pictures or words as targets. Both experiments demonstrated that priming negative versus positive music slowed RTs in a semantic task, irrespective of target valence. Hierarchical Bayesian drift diffusion model analyses suggest that the slow-down effects for negative conditions are mainly attributed to reduced drift rates. Together, these experiments demonstrate that negative auditory valence can impair subsequent semantic processing of visual targets in an additive fashion. Mothers' coaching of sadness and anger was observationally assessed in a laboratory task at T1 under two categories, high and low elaborative styles of emotion coaching. Mothers also reported their depressive symptoms at T1. Children's emotion regulation was observed in laboratory tasks eliciting sadness and anger at T1 and T2. Path analyses revealed three-way interactions among maternal depressive symptoms, low elaborative emotion coaching, and high elaborative emotion coaching in predicting preschoolers' emotion regulation in both sadness- and anger-eliciting tasks 1 year later. Maternal low elaborative emotion coaching of sadness reduced children's focus on distress in the sadness-eliciting task only when mothers showed high depressive symptoms and used little high elaborative emotion coaching. In contrast, maternal low elaborative emotion coaching of sadness and anger predicted maladaptive child emotion regulation in both sadness- and anger-eliciting tasks, respectively, when mothers were depressed or used greater high elaborative emotion coaching. However, empathy is more than the ability to share and understand others' feelings; it also reflects underlying motives that drive people to experience or avoid it. As such, another strategy for increasing empathy could focus on shifting relevant motives. Here we explored this idea, leveraging two intervention techniques (mindsets and social norms) to increase motivation to empathize. Two hundred ninety-two first-year college students were randomly assigned to one of three intervention conditions-malleable mindset, social norms, or a combination of the two-or a control condition. Eight weeks later, participants in the intervention conditions endorsed stronger beliefs about empathy's malleability and exhibited greater empathic accuracy when rating others' positive emotions as compared to the control condition.

The quality of the reviews was assessed with Assessment the Methodology of Systematic Review (AMSTAR-2) and categorized with The Leuven Clinical Pathway Compass for the definition of the five domains processes, service, clinical, team, and financial. We found nine reviews. Three achieved a high level of quality with AMSTAR-2. The areas classified according to The Leuven Clinical Pathway Compass were 9.7% team multidisciplinary involvement, 13.2% clinical (morbidity/mortality), 44.3% process (continuity-clinical integration, transitional), 5.6% financial (length of stay), and 27.0% service (patient-/family-centered care). Overall, none of the 300 instruments retrieved could be considered a gold standard mainly because they did not cover all the critical pathway domains outlined by Leuven and Health Technology Assessment. This overview shows important insights for the definition of a multiprinciple framework of core domains for assessing the quality of pathways. In order to better understand the EGFR-NEU3 interplay and the mechanisms of pharmacological resistance, we investigated the role of NEU3 deregulation in cetuximab-treated CRC cell lines transiently transfected with NEU3 using Western blot analysis. Our results indicate that NEU3 overexpression can enhance EGFR activation only if EGFR is overexpressed, indicating the existence of a threshold for NEU3-mediated EGFR activation. This enhancement mainly leads to the constitutive activation of the MAP kinase pathway. Consequently, we suggest that the evaluation of NEU3 expression cannot entirely substitute the evaluation of EGFR because EGFR-negative cases cannot be stimulated by NEU3. Furthermore, NEU3-mediated hyperactivation of EGFR is counterbalanced by the administration of cetuximab, hypothesizing that a combined treatment of NEU3- and EGFR-targeted therapies may represent a valid option for CRC patients, which must be investigated in the future.

An overview of systematic reviews was conducted, according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses, using Medline, Embase, Science Citation Index, PsychInfo, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library, from 2015 to 2020, and with snowballing methods. The quality of the reviews was assessed with Assessment the Methodology of Systematic Review (AMSTAR-2) and categorized with The Leuven Clinical Pathway Compass for the definition of the five domains processes, service, clinical, team, and financial. We found nine reviews. Three achieved a high level of quality with AMSTAR-2. The areas classified according to The Leuven Clinical Pathway Compass were 9.7% team multidisciplinary involvement, 13.2% clinical (morbidity/mortality), 44.3% process (continuity-clinical integration, transitional), 5.6% financial (length of stay), and 27.0% service (patient-/family-centered care). Overall, none of the 300 instruments retrieved could be considered a gold standard mainly because they did not cover all the critical pathway domains outlined by Leuven and Health Technology Assessment. This overview shows important insights for the definition of a multiprinciple framework of core domains for assessing the quality of pathways. In order to better understand the EGFR-NEU3 interplay and the mechanisms of pharmacological resistance, we investigated the role of NEU3 deregulation in cetuximab-treated CRC cell lines transiently transfected with NEU3 using Western blot analysis. Our results indicate that NEU3 overexpression can enhance EGFR activation only if EGFR is overexpressed, indicating the existence of a threshold for NEU3-mediated EGFR activation. This enhancement mainly leads to the constitutive activation of the MAP kinase pathway. Consequently, we suggest that the evaluation of NEU3 expression cannot entirely substitute the evaluation of EGFR because EGFR-negative cases cannot be stimulated by NEU3. Our results showed that negative emotions mediated the link between mindfulness and sleep quality and that neuroticism had a moderating effect on the relationship between mindfulness and sleep quality. Our paper examines space arts as a case study through the history, present practices, and future possible arts in the context of humans beyond the Kármán boundary of the Earth's atmosphere. We develop a proposed taxonomy of space arts, based on prior taxonomies, and provide specific exemplars of space art developed by artists in space or for use by astronauts in space. Using examples of space art since the birth of the space age, we discuss (1) how human survival in extreme environments requires investment in the space arts, driven by consideration of various biopsychosocial factors and (2) how new scientific and engineering discoveries; such as the detection of air current patterns with paper airplanes in zero gravity, could be consequences or examples of creative thinking driven by artists in the various types of space art. We conclude by discussing possible benefits of space art, future research applications, and advocate that all space actors, government or private, involve artists in all projects beyond the Kármán Boundary of the Earth's atmosphere.University students are the most employed category of participants in cognitive research. Despite previous studies demonstrating that alcohol consumption leads to decrements in next-day cognitive abilities, the potential confounding effect of hangover on the validity of cognitive research has never been addressed. To address this issue, in the present study, a test-retest design was used, with two groups of university students at T0, one group was constituted by hungover participants, while the other group was constituted by non-hungover participants; at T1, both groups were re-tested in a non-hangover state. In particular, the tests used were two versions of a parity judgment task and an arithmetic verification task. The results highlight that (a) the response times of university students experiencing a hangover are significantly slower than those of non-hangover students and (b) the response times of hungover students are slower than those of the same students when re-tested in a non-hangover state. Additionally, it was also observed that the prevalence of hungover students in the university campus varies depending on the day of the week, with a greater chance of enrolling hungover participants on specific days. In light of the latter result, the recruitment of university students as participants in cognitive experiments might lead researchers to erroneously attribute their results to the variables they are manipulating, ignoring the effects of the potential hangover state.

The studied perfect absorber is a metal-insulator-metal configuration where a thin MgF2 spacer is sandwiched between an optically thick gold layer and uniformly patterned gold circular nanodisc antennas. The localized and propagating nature of the plasmonic resonances are characterized and confirmed theoretically. The origin of the perfect absorption is investigated using the impedance matching and critical coupling phenomenon. We calculate the effective impedance of the perfect absorber and confirm the matching with the free space impedance. We also investigate the scattering properties of the top antenna layer and confirm the minimized reflection at resonance wavelengths by calculating the absorption and scattering cross sections. The excitation of plasmonic resonances boost the near-field intensity by three orders of magnitude which enhances the interaction between the metamaterial surface and the incident energy. The refractive index sensitivity of the perfect absorber could go as high as S=500 nm/RIU. To provide an as comprehensive as possible dataset on Mediterranean coastal area, an intensive experimental campaign was realized at a near-shore Italian site, using optical and acoustic ground-based remote sensing and surface instruments, under different weather characteristic and stability conditions; the campaign is also fully simulated by a NWP model. Integrating information from instruments responding to different atmospheric properties allowed for an explanation of the development of various patterns in the vertical structure of the atmosphere. Wind LiDAR measurements provided information of the internal boundary layer from the value of maximum height reached by the wind profile; a height between 80 and 130 m is often detected as an interface between two different layers. The NWP model was able to simulate the vertical wind profiles and the eight of the ABL.Among olfactory functions, odor identification is the most studied predictor of dementia. We aimed to verify whether patients with dementia are less aware of specific odors than cognitively normal individuals using an odor identification test, which includes odorants that are culturally familiar to South Koreans. We divided 139 older adults aged 57-79 years into the dementia and normal cognition groups. Odor identification function was assessed in all participants. We conducted hierarchical logistic regression analyses with the diagnosis of dementia as a dependent variable and three demographic characteristics, as well as 12 odor identification items, as independent variables. Impaired odor identification for herbal medicine (odds ratio (OR) = 9.420; p = 0.012) and Korean grilled meat (OR = 5.361; p = 0.019) and older age (OR = 1.176; p = 0.005) were significant predictors of dementia. Impaired odor identification of culturally familiar odorants was associated with dementia risk. This may be explained by the fact that compared with culturally non-specific universal odorants, familiar odorants are more related to episodic memory, which is impaired in the early stages of dementia. Thus, an optimal combination of odor identification items should be used for screening individuals with cognitive decline requiring further neurocognitive function tests.

For massive survival data, we propose a subsampling algorithm to efficiently approximate the estimates of regression parameters in the additive hazards model. We establish consistency and asymptotic normality of the subsample-based estimator given the full data. The optimal subsampling probabilities are obtained via minimizing asymptotic variance of the resulting estimator. The subsample-based procedure can largely reduce the computational cost compared with the full data method. In numerical simulations, our method has low bias and satisfactory coverage probabilities. We provide an illustrative example on the survival analysis of patients with lymphoma cancer from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program.Chemotherapy-induced anemia (CIA) is a major obstacle in cancer management. Although the mechanisms governing CIA are poorly understood, recent efforts have identified suicidal erythrocyte (red blood cell, RBC) death as a possible cause of CIA. [6]-Gingerol (GNG), a polyphenol extracted from Zingiber officinale plant, exhibits a wide array of biological activities including antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and anticancer activities, in vitro and in vivo. However, the potential toxicity of GNG to human RBCs remains unexplored. RBCs from heparinized blood were isolated by centrifugation and exposed to antitumor concentrations (10-100 µM) of GNG for 24 hr at 37°C. Hemolysis was calculated from hemoglobin leakage in the supernatant (λmax = 405 nm), while cytofluorometric analysis of eryptosis employed Annexin-V-FITC to detect phosphatidylserine (PS) exposure, forward scatter (FSC) to estimate cell volume, Fluo4/AM to measure calcium activity, and H2 DCFDA to assess oxidative stressation of GNG in chemotherapy. Human papilloma virus (HPV) is 1 of the most common sexually transmitted infection responsible for different types of cancer cervical, penile, vulvar, anal and oropharyngeal. It can affect both males and females. Our aim was to enrich the knowledge on the safety profiles of HPV vaccines in the male population.
We reviewed all the reports of adverse events following immunization (AEFI) present in the US Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System from 1 January 2006 to 30 September 2018. Statistical data mining was performed using the reporting odds ratio with 95% confidence interval in order to detect disproportionality in reporting.
A total of 5493 reports of AEFI were retrieved. The events most reported and that proportionally occurred more frequently with HPV vaccines than with others in males were syncope (n = 701, reporting odds ratio = 2.85, 95% confidence interval [1.41-5.76p), loss of consciousness (n = 425, 2.79 [1.36-5.72]) and fall (n = 272, 3.54 [2.00-6.26]).
Most of the AEFIs were already reported in premarketing clinical trials and acknowledged for the corresponding vaccines. A disproportionate reporting was found for some of these events including syncope. To create and assess a clinic model to address the unmet need for effective contraception among women living with HIV in Botswana, where half of all pregnancies are unintended and 30% of women of reproductive age are living with HIV.
We introduced family planning services into an HIV clinic in Gaborone, Botswana. Our intervention gave HIV providers brief training on contraceptive counseling plus the option of immediate referral of interested patients to an on-site contraception provider. Post intervention, 45% of patients chose to meet with the contraception provider, and 29% wanted to use LARC (P<0.001 versus baseline). All providers strongly agreed that they were better informed about contraception post intervention and were satisfied with their ability to counsel and refer women for contraception.

Thus, we aimed to investigate whether the pathways influenced by these drugs may modulate the cardiac remodeling process in MPS I ****. For massive survival data, we propose a subsampling algorithm to efficiently approximate the estimates of regression parameters in the additive hazards model. We establish consistency and asymptotic normality of the subsample-based estimator given the full data. The optimal subsampling probabilities are obtained via minimizing asymptotic variance of the resulting estimator. The subsample-based procedure can largely reduce the computational cost compared with the full data method. In numerical simulations, our method has low bias and satisfactory coverage probabilities. We provide an illustrative example on the survival analysis of patients with lymphoma cancer from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program.Chemotherapy-induced anemia (CIA) is a major obstacle in cancer management. Although the mechanisms governing CIA are poorly understood, recent efforts have identified suicidal erythrocyte (red blood cell, RBC) death as a possible cause of CIA. [6]-Gingerol (GNG), a polyphenol extracted from Zingiber officinale plant, exhibits a wide array of biological activities including antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and anticancer activities, in vitro and in vivo. However, the potential toxicity of GNG to human RBCs remains unexplored. RBCs from heparinized blood were isolated by centrifugation and exposed to antitumor concentrations (10-100 µM) of GNG for 24 hr at 37°C. Hemolysis was calculated from hemoglobin leakage in the supernatant (λmax = 405 nm), while cytofluorometric analysis of eryptosis employed Annexin-V-FITC to detect phosphatidylserine (PS) exposure, forward scatter (FSC) to estimate cell volume, Fluo4/AM to measure calcium activity, and H2 DCFDA to assess oxidative stressation of GNG in chemotherapy. This study aimed to propose a conditioning activity (CA) model to stimulate improvement on neuromuscular responses, mechanical parameters and for the 50-m freestyle swimming. Thirteen male swimmers (19 ± 3 years and performances of 77% in relation to World Championship records) performed four CA protocols followed by a maximum performance in the 50-m freestyle. In the first protocol (P1) swimmers performed a standard warm-up (∼15 min); in the second protocol (P2) lunges (3 × 85% of the one-repetition maximum); in the third (P3) pull-ups (3 maximum repetitions) and box jumps 40 cm high and 60 cm deep (1 × 5 with 10% of the corporal weight); and in the fourth protocol (P4) a combination of exercises from the second and third protocols. CA protocols had no effect on the standard warm-up. However, P2 performance (27.01 ± 1.25 s) was similar to P1 (27.01 ± 1.18 s) and presented higher positive effects in mechanical parameters for the swim start performance in comparison to other protocols, contributing to improvements in the 50-m freestyle. We examine the metabolic pathways required to supply the muscle with energy, as well as muscle-derived signals that regulate metabolic energy homeostasis.Adipokinetic Hormone (AKH) is the primary insect hormone that mobilizes stored energy and is functional equivalent to mammalian glucagon. While most studies have focused on exploring the functional roles of AKH, relatively little is known about how AKH secretion is regulated. We assessed the AKH cell transcriptome and mined the data set for specific insight into the identities of different ion channels expressed in this cell lineage. We found reliable expression of multiple ion channel genes with multiple members for each ionic species. Specifically, we found significant signals for 39 of the either known or suspected ion channel genes within the Drosophila genome. We next performed a targeted RNAi screen aimed to identify the functional contribution of these different ion channels that may participate in excitation-secretion coupling in AKH producing cells (APCs). We assessed starvation survival, because changes in AKH signaling have previously been shown to impact starvation sensitivity. Genetic knockdown ocitability and establish an experimental framework for evaluating intrinsic mechanisms of AKH release.A crucial subject in sports is identifying the inter-individual variation in response to training, which would allow creating individualized pre-training schedules, improving runner's performance. We aimed to analyze heterogeneity in individual responses to two half-marathon training programs differing in running volume and intensity in middle-aged recreational women. 20 women (40 ± 7 years, 61 ± 7 kg, 167 ± 6 cm, and VO2max = 48 ± 6 mL⋅kg-1⋅min-1) underwent either moderate-intensity continuous (****) or high-intensity interval (HIIT) 12-week training. They were evaluated before and after training with maximal incremental tests in the laboratory (VO2max) and in the field (time to exhaustion, TTE; short interval series and long run). All the women participated in the same half-marathon and their finishing times were compared with their previous times. Although the improvements in the mean finishing times were not significant, **** elicited a greater reduction (3 min 50 s, P = 0.298), with more women (70%) improving on their previous times, than HIIT (reduction of 2 min 34 s, P = 0.197, 50% responders). Laboratory tests showed more differences in the HIIT group (P = 0.008), while both groups presented homogeneous significant (P less then 0.05) increases in TTE. Both in the short interval series and in the long run, HIIT induced better individual improvements, with a greater percentage of responders compared to **** (100% vs 50% in the short series and 78% vs 38% in the long run). We conducted a fine-scale empirical study on habitat and gene expression of an allopolyploid and its diploid progenitors. We quantified soil properties and light availability of habitats of an allotetraploid Cardamine flexuosa and its diploid progenitors Cardamine amara and Cardamine hirsuta in two seasons. We analyzed expression patterns of genes and homeologs (homeologous gene copies in allopolyploids) using RNA sequencing. We detected niche divergence between the allopolyploid and its diploid progenitors along water availability gradient at a fine scale the diploids in opposite extremes and the allopolyploid in a broader range between diploids, with limited overlap with diploids at both ends. Most of the genes whose homeolog expression ratio changed among habitats in C. flexuosa varied spatially and temporally. These findings provide empirical evidence for niche divergence between an allopolyploid and its diploid progenitor species at a fine scale and suggest that divergent expression patterns of homeologs in an allopolyploid may underlie its persistence in diverse habitats.
This study explored perceptions on a good-life, good-death, and advance care planning in Koreans with non-cancerous chronic diseases with the goal to develop a culture-specific advance care planning intervention in this population.
A qualitative descriptive design was used.
Data collections were conducted between September 2017 - June 2018. Twenty-nine patients aged 41-82years (85.8% men) participated in the interviews lasting 40-60min. The verbatim transcriptions of the semi-structured interview data were analysed using conventional content analysis.
Good-life was described as 'present with physical and financial independence,' 'not burdensome to the family,' 'completed life responsibility', and 'helping others.' Some participants described good-death as 'prepared death' while others considered it as 'sudden death during sleep.' All participants wanted to have a painless death and not burden the family. Advance care planning was a new concept to many participants. It was likened to 'insurance.' Some teristics compared with cancer, and the cultural norms and social context. Nurses need to be prepared to offer advance care planning to persons with non-cancerous chronic diseases based on a keen sense of and empathetic cultural competence.Priority effect theory, a foundational concept from community ecology, states that the order and timing of species arrival during species assembly can affect species composition. Although this theory has been applied to co-infecting parasite species, it has almost always been with a single time lag between co-infecting parasites. Thus, how the timing of parasite species arrival affects co-infections and disease remains poorly understood. To address this gap in the literature, we exposed postmetamorphic Cuban tree frogs (Osteopilus septentrionalis) to Ranavirus, the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), a nematode Aplectana hamatospicula, or pairs of these parasites either simultaneously or sequentially at a range of time lags and quantified load of the secondary parasite and host growth, survival, and parasite tolerance. Prior exposure to Bd or A. hamatospicula significantly increased viral loads relative to hosts singly infected with Ranavirus, whereas A. hamatospicula loads in hosts were higher when coexposed to Bd than when coexposed to Ranavirus. There was a significant positive relationship between time since Ranavirus infection and Bd load, and prior exposure to A. hamatospicula decreased Bd loads compared to simultaneous co-infection with these parasites. Schools around the world are increasingly diverse in ethnicity. Given the importance of peer acceptance in children's well-being and development, it is a pressing concern for educators to promote intergroup acceptance in schools.
First, to examine the developmental trends of acceptance of outgroup members in both the ethnic minority and majority students. Second, to investigate how outgroup acceptance is subject to the interplay between perceived norm of prejudice, a risk factor in the macrosystem, and teacher support, a protective factor in the microsystem.
The participants were 3,723 students (ethnic majority 61%; boys 51.9%; mean age 13.7) at Grade 2, 5, 8, and 11 from 24 schools in Hong Kong.
The students were asked to complete a battery of questionnaires regarding their willingness to accept outgroup members in schools, perceived societal norm of prejudice against ethnic minority group, and teacher support they received in schools.
It was found that ethnic minority students accepted outgroup members more than ethnic majority students accepted them. The difference was primarily driven by the low outgroup acceptance of ethnic majority students in Grades 2 and 5. The results of multi-level analysis revealed that outgroup acceptance was associated negatively with perceived norm of prejudice but positively with teacher support. The negative association between outgroup acceptance and perceived norm of prejudice was attenuated in schools with supportive culture.
The results point to the need of early intervention and the importance of cultivating school culture with strong social emotional support.

We conducted a fine-scale empirical study on habitat and gene expression of an allopolyploid and its diploid progenitors. We quantified soil properties and light availability of habitats of an allotetraploid Cardamine flexuosa and its diploid progenitors Cardamine amara and Cardamine hirsuta in two seasons. We analyzed expression patterns of genes and homeologs (homeologous gene copies in allopolyploids) using RNA sequencing. We detected niche divergence between the allopolyploid and its diploid progenitors along water availability gradient at a fine scale the diploids in opposite extremes and the allopolyploid in a broader range between diploids, with limited overlap with diploids at both ends. Most of the genes whose homeolog expression ratio changed among habitats in C. flexuosa varied spatially and temporally. These findings provide empirical evidence for niche divergence between an allopolyploid and its diploid progenitor species at a fine scale and suggest that divergent expression patterns of homeologs in an allopolyploid may underlie its persistence in diverse habitats. This study explored perceptions on a good-life, good-death, and advance care planning in Koreans with non-cancerous chronic diseases with the goal to develop a culture-specific advance care planning intervention in this population. A qualitative descriptive design was used. Data collections were conducted between September 2017 - June 2018. Twenty-nine patients aged 41-82years (85.8% men) participated in the interviews lasting 40-60min. The verbatim transcriptions of the semi-structured interview data were analysed using conventional content analysis. Good-life was described as 'present with physical and financial independence,' 'not burdensome to the family,' 'completed life responsibility', and 'helping others.' Some participants described good-death as 'prepared death' while others considered it as 'sudden death during sleep.' All participants wanted to have a painless death and not burden the family. Advance care planning was a new concept to many participants. It was likened to 'insurance.' Some teristics compared with cancer, and the cultural norms and social context. Nurses need to be prepared to offer advance care planning to persons with non-cancerous chronic diseases based on a keen sense of and empathetic cultural competence.Priority effect theory, a foundational concept from community ecology, states that the order and timing of species arrival during species assembly can affect species composition. Although this theory has been applied to co-infecting parasite species, it has almost always been with a single time lag between co-infecting parasites. Thus, how the timing of parasite species arrival affects co-infections and disease remains poorly understood. To address this gap in the literature, we exposed postmetamorphic Cuban tree frogs (Osteopilus septentrionalis) to Ranavirus, the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), a nematode Aplectana hamatospicula, or pairs of these parasites either simultaneously or sequentially at a range of time lags and quantified load of the secondary parasite and host growth, survival, and parasite tolerance. Prior exposure to Bd or A. hamatospicula significantly increased viral loads relative to hosts singly infected with Ranavirus, whereas A. hamatospicula loads in hosts were higher when coexposed to Bd than when coexposed to Ranavirus. There was a significant positive relationship between time since Ranavirus infection and Bd load, and prior exposure to A. hamatospicula decreased Bd loads compared to simultaneous co-infection with these parasites. Given the importance of peer acceptance in children's well-being and development, it is a pressing concern for educators to promote intergroup acceptance in schools. First, to examine the developmental trends of acceptance of outgroup members in both the ethnic minority and majority students. Second, to investigate how outgroup acceptance is subject to the interplay between perceived norm of prejudice, a risk factor in the macrosystem, and teacher support, a protective factor in the microsystem. The participants were 3,723 students (ethnic majority 61%; boys 51.9%; mean age 13.7) at Grade 2, 5, 8, and 11 from 24 schools in Hong Kong. The students were asked to complete a battery of questionnaires regarding their willingness to accept outgroup members in schools, perceived societal norm of prejudice against ethnic minority group, and teacher support they received in schools. It was found that ethnic minority students accepted outgroup members more than ethnic majority students accepted them. The difference was primarily driven by the low outgroup acceptance of ethnic majority students in Grades 2 and 5. The results of multi-level analysis revealed that outgroup acceptance was associated negatively with perceived norm of prejudice but positively with teacher support. The negative association between outgroup acceptance and perceived norm of prejudice was attenuated in schools with supportive culture. The results point to the need of early intervention and the importance of cultivating school culture with strong social emotional support. The economic burden of cancer in the United States is substantial, and better understanding it is essential in informing health care policy and innovation. Leptomeningeal carcinomatosis (LC) represents a late complication of primary cancer spreading to the leptomeninges.
The IBM MarketScan Research databases were queried for adults diagnosed with LC from 2001 to 2015, secondary to 4 primary cancers (breast, lung, gastrointestinal, and melanoma). Health care resource utilization (HCRU) and treatment utilization were quantified at baseline (1-year pre-LC diagnosis) and 30, 90, and 365 days post-LC diagnosis.
We identified 4961 cases of LC (46.3% breast cancer, 34.8% lung cancer, 13.5% gastrointestinal cancer, and 5.4% melanoma). The median age was 57.0 years, with 69.7% female and 31.1% residing in the South. Insurance status included commercial (71.1%), Medicare (19.8%), and Medicaid (9.1%). Median follow-up was 66.0 days (25th percentile 24.0, 75th percentile 186.0) and total cumulative costs were highetudy, including current treatments, with an emphasis on HCRU. There is considerable variation in the treatment of LC and significant health care costs.

Pediatric and adult patients with histologically confirmed CNS tumors were identified from the National Cancer Database (2004-2015). Univariable and multivariable regression models were constructed to assess factors impacting radiation timing. Multivariable Cox regression was used to evaluate the effect of treatment delay on survival.
A total of 76 157 patients received photon or proton radiotherapy. Compared to photons, time to proton administration was longer in multiple pediatric (embryonal, ependymal, nonependymal glial, and other) and adult (ependymal, nonependymal glial, meningeal, other) tumor histologies. Pineal parenchymal tumors are exceedingly rare brain tumors responsible for less than 1% of all adult primary intracranial malignancies in the United States. In this study, we describe the clinicopathologic features, management, and outcomes of patients with pineal parenchymal tumor of intermediate differentiation (PPTID).
We describe a single-center, multidisciplinary team experience in managing PPTID patients over a 15-year period (January 2000 to January 2015) at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC). Pathology was reviewed by the pathology collaborators (A.G. and G.N.F.) and retrospective chart review was performed for treatment and clinical outcomes.
We identified 17 patients (9 male) with diagnosis of PPTID. Median age at diagnosis of PPTID was 37 years (range, 15-57 years). Follow-up ranged from 0.1 to 162.8 months with 6 reported deaths. Most patients presented with headaches and diplopia. Three patients had neuroaxial dissemination at initial diagnosis, and recurrence of tumor was common (7/16) despite treatment.
No clear prognostic factors were identified in this series. Extension of resection showed a trend toward improved survival. PPTID with neuroaxial dissemination benefits from aggressive initial treatment including craniospinal irradiation and adjuvant chemotherapy, whereas localized disease may be treated traditionally with maximum debulking followed by adjuvant radiotherapy alone. Long-term monitoring is recommended for neurotoxicity and/or late recurrence.

A literature search in several electronic databases was conducted up to September 2019, including studies with brain tumor and other neurological patients. Information related to the following topics was extracted tools to measure MDC, consent to treatment or research, predictive patient- and treatment-related factors, surrogate decision making, and interventions to improve MDC.
A total of 138 articles were deemed eligible. Several structured capacity-assessment instruments are available to aid clinical decision making.
