Primary systemic amyloidosis is an uncommon disease which presents with involvement of the kidney, heart, peripheral nervous system and liver. The involvement of skeletal muscles called amyloid myopathy is uncommon. We report a 74-year-old male who presented with progressively drooping shoulders followed by other muscular involvement without other organ involvement as a manifestation of amyloidosis. The patient was managed with melphalan, prednisolone and thalidomide with clinical improvement.

Surgery is the standard of care, and adjuvant radiation therapy (RT) is given in the presence of features suggesting a high risk of local recurrence. . The records of 37 patients were included for analysis, of these 34 underwent surgery and 21 received adjuvant RT. Their median age was 60 (range 30-85) years. Sebaceous cell carcinoma was the most common (50.4%). The median disease-free survival (DFS) was 35 months (95% CI 17.9-52.0). The 1- and 3-year DFS were 82.7% and 45%, respectively. Univariate analysis showed a superior outcome with early stage (T1) tumours (p=0.01), RT dose of ≥60 Gy and those underwent lymph node dissection (p=0.03). The presence of high-risk factors including close or positive margin had an inferior outcome with a trend towards statistical significance (p=0.06).

The court ordered the state to instal a video conferencing system for the benefit of doctors in hospitals for this purpose. We aimed to quantify the costs and benefits of the video conferencing system for doctors to give evidence as expert witness in courts.
. We analysed the tele-evidence system at our institution from the societal point of view examining whether the arrangements were positive for the taxpayers and second from the point of view of a cost-break-even analysis.
. Over a period of 1 year, 482 tele-evidences were recorded from our site. Most of the doctors appearing for court evidence were males (84%) and the majority were in government health services (84.4%). These expert witnesses included specialists (83.8%), followed by super-specialists (10.4%) and non-specialists (5.8%). The subject experts who were called the most were radiologists (19.5%), forensic experts (18.3%), surgeons (18.0%), orthopaedic surgeons (12.4%) and neurosurgeons (6.6%). Average savings per tele-evidence were ₹2620; 181 km of travel was prevented and 4 hours and 12 minutes of time was saved.

. Infection-related glomerulonephritis (IRGN) in adults is witnessing a dramatic shift in its epidemiology and outcome. Adult IRGN studies are all retrospective in nature, and Indian studies are scarce.
. We did this prospective study (September 2016-April 2018) on all patients with biopsy-proven IRGN and age ≥18 years satisfying three of five diagnostic criteria. Patients with persistent hypocomplementaemia (>3 months) were excluded. We did electron microscopy in those without a minimum of three diagnostic criteria and did an extensive search for any occult infection in every patient.
. Forty-five patients were studied with a mean (SD) follow-up of 45.7 (20) weeks. Their mean age was 41.5 years (18-70 years), with a female preponderance (11.25). At presentation, the majority had oedema (100%), oliguria (84.4%), hypertension (80%) and haematuria (77.8%). Of them, 86.7% had renal insufficiency and 35.6% required dialysis. Only 53.3% of them had evidence of antecedent/ current infection, with skin/subcutaneous focus being the most common site. Hypocomplementaemia was present in 82.2% of patients. Salient pathological features were endocapillary proliferation (93.3%), neutrophilic infiltration (88.9%), presence of crescents (17.8%), interstitial infiltration (24.4%), moderate-to-severe interstitial fibrosis with tubular atrophy (IFTA; 15.5%) and underlying diabetic glomerulosclerosis (8.9%). Only 66.7% of patients made complete renal recovery. By logistic regression analysis, the predictors of poor outcome were a requirement for dialysis at presentation (p=0.04) and presence of IFTA (p = 0.03).

We confirmed a significant subset of PFMTs remain difficult to classify using current criteria, and that a combined DNA/RNA assay can identify alterations in many of these cases, improving diagnostic certainty and suggesting a clinical utility for challenging cases.This functional joint model paper is motivated by a chronic kidney disease study post kidney transplantation. The available kidney organ is a scarce resource because millions of end-stage renal patients are on the waiting list for kidney transplantation. The life of the transplanted kidney can be extended if the progression of the chronic kidney disease stage can be slowed, and so a major research question is how to extend the transplanted kidney life to maximize the usage of the scarce organ resource. The glomerular filtration rate is the best test to monitor the progression of the kidney function, and it is a continuous longitudinal outcome with repeated measures. The patient's survival status is characterized by time-to-event outcomes including kidney transplant failure, death with kidney function, and death without kidney function. Few studies have been carried out to simultaneously investigate these multiple clinical outcomes in chronic kidney disease stage patients based on a joint model. Therefore, this paper proposes a new functional joint model from this clinical chronic kidney disease study. The proposed joint models include a longitudinal sub-model with a flexible basis function for subject-level trajectories and a competing-risks sub-model for multiple time-to event outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the perception, barriers, and research attitudes among various residency programs running in different cities of Saudi Arabia. A total of 434 surgical and medical residents participated in the current study. A cross-sectional study encompassing multiple training centers in the eastern province of Saudi. Convenient sampling technique was used to include all the working training residents. A self-administered questionnaire was formulated for data collection. Descriptive statistics were employed to analyze the data. The mean age of the residents with various specialties was 27.83 ± 2.41 years. Approximately 61.7% had participated in research, while 38.3% had never participated in any research. A total of 26% of junior and 44% of senior residents have one publication only. While 11% of junior and 9% of senior residents have three publications or more. Inadequate facilities for research, lack of baseline research skills, and personal commitments were the reasons which over 60% of respondents had agreed on. Institutional reasons lack of professional supervisor support and lack of research curriculum in the training program was reported by 308 (71%) and 305(70.3%) residents, respectively. A lack of interest for research was prevailed more in males (19%) compared to females (14%) (OR 1.43, 95% CI 0.86-2.38, p-value 0.17). A subset of residents had one or three publications, while some had none. A lack of baseline research skills and inadequate facilities for scientific explorations, time, and funds were the main constraints among training residents. However, several residents had a positive attitude toward research but fewer publications. Thus, training in medical research methodology should be obligatory in the residency curriculum in all specialties. Further research is needed.To evaluate the quality of life (QOL) of children with asthma and analyze the related factors. A total of 360 children diagnosed with asthma were enrolled. We conducted the pediatric asthma quality of life questionnaire (PAQLQ). The differences in clinical characteristics between the two groups were compared. Clinical characteristics were compared between high and low QOL. More female was observed in low QOL group (p = 0.013). Patients with higher income (p = 0.003) were shown with higher QOL. Female patients presented significantly lower values for activity limitation (p = 0.016) and emotional function (p = 0.016) as compared to male patients. For patients who have low income, the QOL scores for dimensions of activity limitation was significantly worse than those have higher income (p = 0.001). Univariable results showed that gender (p = 0.013) and income (p = 0.001) were factors associated with QOL in asthma children. However, multivariate analysis suggested that only gender (OR = 0.558, p = 0.008) and income (OR = 1.762, p less then 0.001) were the independent factors that affected the QOL levels. In this study, we found that the QOL dimensions of pediatric asthma differed between various subpopulations. For patients with risk factors of poor QOL, target intervention is advised in order to increase QOL.Acute lung injury (ALI) is one of the most prevalent respiratory syndromes of excessive inflammatory reaction during lung infection. Candida albicans (C. albicans) infection is among the leading causes of ALI. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) regulate the expression of target mRNAs, including those involved in inflammatory processes, by binding to the 3'UTR. To date, the roles of miRNAs in C. albicans-induced ALI remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the role of miR-384-5p in C. albicans-induced ALI and its underlying molecular mechanism. RT-PCR, Western blot, ELISA, Myeloperoxidase (MPO) assay, microRNA target analysis, transient transfection, and luciferase reporter assay were utilized. In vivo study was conducted on mouse model. The expression of miR-384-5p was upregulated and positively correlated with inflammatory cytokine production in lung tissues and RAW264.7 and J774A.1 macrophages infected with C. albicans. The miR-384-5p inhibitor alleviated the inflammatory reaction induced by C. albicans. Target prediction analysis revealed that PGC1β was a target of miR-384-5p, which was further validated by the PGC1β 3'-UTR luciferase assay and the inverse correlation between the expression of miR-384-5p and PGC1β in C.

We then regulate the dynamic behavior by altering experimental conditions (i.e., bias potential, nanopipette surface charge, and particle size), and the results further validate the presence and influence of forces being considered. This study improves the understanding of the relationship between particle properties and observed current transients, providing more possibilities for accurate single-particle analysis and single-entity regulation.Interfacial interactions between antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and metallic nanomaterials (NMs) lead to adsorption and fragmentation of ARGs, which can provide new avenues for selecting NMs to control ARGs. This study compared the adsorptive interactions of ARGs (tetM-carrying plasmids) with two metallic NMs (ca. 20 nm), i.e., titanium dioxide (nTiO2) and zero-valent iron (nZVI). nZVI had a higher adsorption rate (0.06 min-1) and capacity (4.29 mg/g) for ARGs than nTiO2 (0.05 min-1 and 2.15 mg/g, respectively). No desorption of ARGs from either NMs was observed in the adsorptive background solution, isopropanol or urea solutions, but nZVI- and nTiO2-adsorbed ARGs were effectively desorbed in NaOH and NaH2PO4 solutions, respectively. Molecular dynamics simulation revealed that nTiO2 mainly bound with ARGs through electrostatic attraction, while nZVI bound with PO43- of the ARG phosphate backbones through Fe-O-P coordination. The ARGs desorbed from nTiO2 remained intact, while the desorbed ARGs from nZVI were splintered into small fragments irrelevant to DNA base composition or sequence location. The ARG removal by nZVI remained effective in the presence of PO43-, natural organic matter, or protein at environmentally relevant concentrations and in surface water samples. These findings indicate that nZVI can be a promising nanomaterial to treat ARG pollution.Flash Joule heating (FJH), an advanced material synthesis technique, has been used for the production of high-quality carbon materials. Direct current discharge through the precursors by large capacitors has successfully converted carbon-based starting materials into bulk quantities of turbostratic graphene by the FJH process. However, the formation of other carbon allotropes, such as nanodiamonds and concentric carbon materials, as well as the covalent functionalization of different carbon allotropes by the FJH process, remains challenging. Here, we report the solvent-free FJH synthesis of three different fluorinated carbon allotropes fluorinated nanodiamonds, fluorinated turbostratic graphene, and fluorinated concentric carbon. This is done by millisecond flashing of organic fluorine compounds and fluoride precursors. Spectroscopic analysis confirms the modification of the electronic states and the existence of various short-range and long-range orders in the different fluorinated carbon allotropes. The present studies evaluated the efficacy of IN carnosine at a higher dose in slowing progression of motor deficits and aSyn accumulation in Thy1-aSyn ****. After baseline neurobehavioral assessments, IN carnosine was administered (0.0, 2.0, or 4.0 mg/day) to wild-type and Thy1-aSyn **** for 8 weeks. Olfactory and motor behavioral measurements were repeated prior to end point tissue collection. Brain sections were immunostained for aSyn and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH). This study compared the adsorptive interactions of ARGs (tetM-carrying plasmids) with two metallic NMs (ca. 20 nm), i.e., titanium dioxide (nTiO2) and zero-valent iron (nZVI). nZVI had a higher adsorption rate (0.06 min-1) and capacity (4.29 mg/g) for ARGs than nTiO2 (0.05 min-1 and 2.15 mg/g, respectively). No desorption of ARGs from either NMs was observed in the adsorptive background solution, isopropanol or urea solutions, but nZVI- and nTiO2-adsorbed ARGs were effectively desorbed in NaOH and NaH2PO4 solutions, respectively. Molecular dynamics simulation revealed that nTiO2 mainly bound with ARGs through electrostatic attraction, while nZVI bound with PO43- of the ARG phosphate backbones through Fe-O-P coordination. The ARGs desorbed from nTiO2 remained intact, while the desorbed ARGs from nZVI were splintered into small fragments irrelevant to DNA base composition or sequence location. The ARG removal by nZVI remained effective in the presence of PO43-, natural organic matter, or protein at environmentally relevant concentrations and in surface water samples. Direct current discharge through the precursors by large capacitors has successfully converted carbon-based starting materials into bulk quantities of turbostratic graphene by the FJH process. However, the formation of other carbon allotropes, such as nanodiamonds and concentric carbon materials, as well as the covalent functionalization of different carbon allotropes by the FJH process, remains challenging. Here, we report the solvent-free FJH synthesis of three different fluorinated carbon allotropes fluorinated nanodiamonds, fluorinated turbostratic graphene, and fluorinated concentric carbon. This is done by millisecond flashing of organic fluorine compounds and fluoride precursors. Spectroscopic analysis confirms the modification of the electronic states and the existence of various short-range and long-range orders in the different fluorinated carbon allotropes. Penile cancer is a rare disease and surgical treatment often entails a significant impact on quality of life. The aim of this study was to analyze trends in surgical treatment patterns in Germany.
We analyzed data from the nationwide German hospital billing database and the German cancer registry from 2006 to 2016. All penile cancer cases with penile surgery or lymph node dissection (LND) were included. We also analyzed the distribution of cases, extent of surgery, and length of hospital stay, stratified for annual caseload. The geographical distribution of centers for 2016 was presented.

Straight-ahead objects evoke (1) stronger neuronal responses in macaque peripheral V1 neurons, (2) stronger EEG and fMRI activations across the human visual cortex and (3) faster reactive hand and eye movements. Here, we discuss the functional implications and underlying mechanisms behind this phenomenon. We describe a case of PPTB in an immunocompetent young man complicated with duodenal fistula. There was complete resolution of symptoms and the fistulous tract with a significant reduction of the size of the lesion on imaging after 6 months of anti-tubercular therapy (ATT).
The purpose of this study was to clarify the independent factors related to patient-reported physical functioning (PF) scores at discharge of patients who underwent allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT).
A total of 103 patients who underwent allo-HSCT were included in this cross-sectional study. As a screening method, a single regression analysis was conducted with the PF domain in the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 at discharge as the dependent variable, and body mass index, adverse events related to HSCT, and objective physical functions as independent variables. Multiple regression analysis was performed with PF as the dependent variable and variables that passed the screening by single regression analysis and confounders as independent variables.
The mean PF score at discharge of the patients was 76.5 (standard deviation 15.2). Based on the results of screening by the single regression analysis, length of stay, infections (+ / -), acute graft-versus-host disease grade, brief fatigue inventory score (BFI), knee extensor strength, and 6-min walk distance (6MWD) were included in the multiple regression analysis. BFI (B = - 11.94, p < 0.001) and 6MWD (per 10m) (B = 0.56, p = 0.001) were extracted as significant independent variables governing the PF at discharge in the multiple regression model (adjusted R
= 0.59).

Treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) has greatly improved survival for patients with a number of malignant diseases in recent years. Neurological immune-related adverse events (n-irAE) of varying severity have been reported in the literature. We aimed to identify the incidence of n-irAE, focusing on immune-related encephalitis (IRE), in patients treated with ICI for multiple non-hematological malignancies in our institution.
All patients with histologically verified cancer that received treatment with ICI at the Sheba Medical Center between January 2017 and August 2019 were surveyed. Medical records for each patient were reviewed and information regarding n-irAE was recorded.
In total, 1993 patients were included. Eleven cases of IRE were recorded, affecting 0.55% of patients overall, eight had non-melanoma cancer. Eight patients had made a full recovery.
IRE is a n-irAE more frequent than previously reported, particularly in non-melanoma patients. The diagnostic criteria and optimal treatment needs to be determined. ICI re-challenge after IRE can be considered for selected patients.

Lidocaine is one of the most widely used local anesthetics with well-known pharmacological properties. The purpose of this systematic review is to investigate the effects of lidocaine on postoperative pain scores and recovery after cardiac surgery.
A comprehensive database search was conducted by a reference librarian for randomized clinical trials (RCT) from January 1, 1980 to September 1, 2019. Eligible study designs included randomized controlled trials of lidocaine for postoperative pain management in adults undergoing cardiac surgery. After removal of duplicates, 947 records were screened for eligibility and 3 RCTs met inclusion criteria.
Sources of bias were identified in 2 of 3 RCTs. Lidocaine was administered intravenously, topically, and intrapleurally. Key findings included [1] 2% lidocaine placed topically on chest tube prior to intraoperative insertion was associated with significantly lower pain scores and lower cumulative doses of fentanyl; and [2] 2% lidocaine administered intrapleurally was associated with significantly lower pain scores and significant improvements in pulmonary mechanics. Lidocaine infusions were not associated with significant changes in pain scores or measures of recovery. No significant associations were observed between lidocaine and overall mortality, hospital length of stay or ICU length of stay. No data were reported for postoperative nausea and vomiting or arrhythmias.
Due to the favorable risk profile of topical lidocaine and the need for further advancements in the postoperative care of adults after cardiac surgery, topically administered lidocaine could be considered for incorporation into established postoperative recovery protocols.

To date, conventional swallowing therapies and 2-channel neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) are standard treatments for dysphagia. The precise mechanism of 2-channel NMES treatment has not been determined, and there are controversies regarding the efficacy of this therapy. The sequential 4-channel NMES was recently developed and its action is based on the normal contractile sequence of swallowing-related muscles.
To evaluate and compare the rehabilitative effectiveness of the sequential 4-channel NMES with that of conventional 2-channel NMES.
In this prospective randomized case-control study, 26 subjects with dysphagia were enrolled. All participants received 2- or 4-channel NMES for 2-3weeks (minimal session 7 times, treatment duration 300-800min). The NLRP3 inflammasome can detect tissue damage and pathogen invasion through innate immune cell sensor components commonly known as pattern recognition receptors (PRRs). PRRs promote activation of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) pathways and the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway, thus increasing the transcription of genes encoding proteins related to the NLRP3 inflammasome. The NLRP3 inflammasome is a complex with multiple components, including an NAIP, CIITA, HET-E, and TP1 (NACHT) domain; apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a CARD (ASC); and a leucine-rich repeat (LRR) domain. After ischemic stroke, the NLRP3 inflammasome can produce numerous proinflammatory cytokines, mediating nerve cell dysfunction and brain edema and ultimately leading to nerve cell death once activated. Ischemic stroke is a disease with high rates of mortality and disability worldwide and is being observed in increasingly younger populations. To date, there are no clearly effective therapeutic strategies for the clinical treatment of ischemic stroke. Understanding the NLRP3 inflammasome may provide novel ideas and approaches because targeting of upstream and downstream molecules in the NLRP3 pathway shows promise for ischemic stroke therapy. In this manuscript, we summarize the existing evidence regarding the composition and activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome, the molecules involved in inflammatory pathways, and corresponding drugs or molecules that exert effects after cerebral ischemia. This evidence may provide possible targets or new strategies for ischemic stroke therapy.
Virtual reality and arm cycling have been reported as effective treatments for improving upper limb motor recovery in patients with stroke. Intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) can increase ipsilesional cortical excitability, and has been increasingly used in patients with stroke. Key findings included [1] 2% lidocaine placed topically on chest tube prior to intraoperative insertion was associated with significantly lower pain scores and lower cumulative doses of fentanyl; and [2] 2% lidocaine administered intrapleurally was associated with significantly lower pain scores and significant improvements in pulmonary mechanics. The primary objective of the study is to determine the effect of a delayed or omitted pill intake on cervical mucus characteristics based on a modified Insler score compared to reported daily use.
Our protocol was successfully approved by a central institutional review board (Advarra, Columbia, MD), received ethical approval on March 23, 2018, and was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT03585712). As of January 2020, the study completed enrollment of 52 subjects. Analyses are pending.

Several studies have reported the positive impact of information and communication technologies (ICTs) on academic performance and outcomes. Although some equipment is available, the ICTs for education at the National Public Health School (NPHS) of Burkina Faso have many shortcomings. These shortcomings were clearly revealed during the search for responses to the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Indeed, to curb the spread of COVID-19, some measures were taken, such as closure of educational institutions. This resulted in a 2.5-month suspension of educational activities. Despite its willingness, the NPHS was unable to use ICTs to continue teaching during the closure period of educational institutions.
In this paper, we aim to propose practical solutions to promote ICT use in teaching at the NPHS by analyzing the weaknesses and challenges related to its use.
We conducted a critical analysis based on information from the gray literature of NPHS. This critical analysis was preceded by a review of systhe motivation of teachers in the pedagogical use of ICTs.

Intron retention (IR) is an important regulatory mechanism that affects gene expression and protein functions. Using klotho **** at the pre-symptomatic state, we discovered that retained-introns accumulated in several organs including the liver and that among these retained introns in the liver a subset was recovered to the normal state by a Japanese traditional herbal medicine. This is the first report of IR recovery by a medicine. IR-recovered genes fell into two categories those involved in liver-specific metabolism and in splicing. Metabolome analysis of the liver showed that the klotho **** were under starvation stress. In addition, our differentially expressed gene analysis showed that liver metabolism was actually recovered by the herbal medicine at the transcriptional level. By analogy with the widespread accumulation of intron-retained pre-mRNAs induced by heat shock stress, we propose a model in which retained-introns in klotho **** were induced by an aging stress and in which this medicine-related IR recovery is indicative of the actual recovery of liver-specific metabolic function to the healthy state. Accumulation of retained-introns was also observed at the pre-symptomatic state of aging in wild-type **** and may be an excellent marker for this state in general.Pharmaceutical agents in oncology currently have high attrition rates from early to late phase clinical trials. Recent advances in computational methods, notably causal artificial intelligence, and availability of rich clinico-genomic databases have made it possible to simulate the efficacy of cancer drug protocols in diverse patient populations, which could inform and improve clinical trial design. Here, we review the current and potential use of in silico trials and causal AI to increase the efficacy and safety of traditional clinical trials. TIGAR can also directly inhibit NF-κB to inhibit neuroinflammation. TIGAR thus protect against cerebral ischemic injury. Exogenous NADPH can inhibit neuroinflammation by inhibiting oxidative stress and regulating a variety of signals. TDP-43 translocates from the nucleus to the cytoplasm in response to oxidative stress, but the mechanism of stress-induced translocation remains unknown. We used N-methyl-N-nitroso-N'-nitroguanidine (MNNG) and oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) in mouse neuronal cultures to activate PARP-1 and observed that pharmacological inhibition of PARP-1 blocked the cytosolic translocation of TDP-43. PARP-1 inhibition is also neuroprotective against both MNNG and OGD, suggesting that PARP inhibitors could play a role in the neuroprotective role in neurodegenerative diseases involving TDP-43. To predict response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) of gastric cancer (GC), prior to surgery, would be pivotal to customize patient treatment. The aim of this study is to investigate the reliability of computed tomography (CT) texture analysis (TA) in predicting the histo-pathological response to NAC in patients with resectable locally advanced gastric cancer (AGC).
Seventy (40 male, mean age 63.3 years) patients with resectable locally AGC, treated with NAC and radical surgery, were included in this retrospective study from 5 centers of the Italian Research Group for Gastric Cancer (GIRCG). Population was divided into two groups 29 patients from one center (internal cohort for model development and internal validation) and 41 from other four centers (external cohort for independent external validation). Gross tumor volume (GTV) was segmented on each pre- and post-NAC multidetector CT (****) image by using a dedicated software (RayStation), and 14 TA parameters were then extrapolated. Correlation between TA parameters and complete pathological response (tumor regression grade, TRG1), was initially investigated for the internal cohort. The univariate significant variables were tested on the external cohort and multivariate logistic analysis was performed.

The purpose of study is to investigate whether adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction-V (ASiR-V) levels affect radiomic feature quantification using ULDCT and to assess the reproducibility of radiomic features between ULDCT and LDCT.
Sixty-three patients with pulmonary nodules underwent LDCT (0.70±0.16 mSv) and ULDCT (0.15±0.02 mSv). LDCT was reconstructed with ASiR-V 50%, and ULDCT with ASiR-V 50%, 70%, and 90%. Radiomics analysis was applied, and 107 features were extracted. The concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) was calculated to describe agreement among ULDCTs and between ULDCT and LDCT for each feature. The proportion of features with CCC >0.9 among ULDCTs and between ULDCT and LDCT, and the mean CCC for allcts in pGGNs than in SNs. Through analyzing multi-omics high throughput data, including ATAC-Seq, DNaseI-Seq and ChIP-Seq, we obtained six age-dependent transcription factors in colon cancer, and their age-dependent targets, significantly affecting patients' overall survivals. Transcription factor ETS1 potentially functioned in both aging process and colon cancer progression through regulating its targets, RGL2 and SLC2A3. In addition, comparing with its relative lower expression levels in elderly patients, higher levels of RGL2 were detected in young patients, and significantly associated with larger tumor size, higher metastasis, and invasions of colon cancer, consistent with the clinical traits that young patients' colon cancer exhibited late stages with more aggressiveness. Thus, these elements may serve as keys linking aging and colon cancer, and providing new insights and basis for mechanism researches, as well as diagnosis and therapies of colon cancer, especially in young patients.Repeat-rich regions of higher plant genomes are usually associated with constitutive heterochromatin, a specific type of chromatin that forms tightly packed nuclear chromocenters and chromosome bands. Using a combination of ultra-long read sequencing with assembly-free sequence analysis, we reveal the complex structure of these loci, which are composed of short arrays of CUS-TR24 interrupted frequently by emerging simple sequence repeats and targeted insertions of a specific lineage of LINE retrotransposons. These data suggest that the organization of satellite repeats constituting heterochromatic chromosome bands can be more complex than previously envisioned, and demonstrate that heterochromatin organization can be efficiently investigated without the need for genome assembly.Furans represent a class of promising chemicals, since they constitute valuable intermediates in conversion of biomass into sustainable products intended to replace petroleum-derivatives. In this work we performed a genomic analysis of major subunits of furoyl-CoA dehydrogenase orthologues, revealing that the furoic acid catabolic route, key intermediate in HMF biodegradation, is widespread in proteobacterial species. Additionally, presence/absence profiles of hmf/psf genes in selected proteobacterial strains suggest parallel and/or complementary roles of enzymes with previously unclear function that could be key in HMF conversion. The furans utilization pattern of selected strains harboring different hmf/psf gene sets provided additional support for bioinformatic predictions of the relevance of some enzymes. On the other hand, at least three different types of transporter systems are clustered with hmf/psf genes, whose presence is mutually exclusive, suggesting a core and parallel role in furans transport in Proteobacteria. This study expands the number of bacteria that could be recruited in biotechnological processes for furans biodetoxification and predicts a core set of genes required to establish a functional HMF pathway in heterologous hosts for metabolic engineering endeavors.

Pubmed, Embase, and Web of Science were searched for relevant papers. Studies reported on the difference of EAT thickness between hypertensive and normotensive patients, or those recorded odds ratio (OR) between EAT and hypertension were included. The standard mean difference (SMD) and ORs were extracted and pooled using a random-effects model respectively. We further assessed the effect of EAT on circadian rhythm of blood pressure by combining multiple-adjusted ORs for non-dipper blood pressure. Children with obesity are treated by a lifestyle intervention to obtain weight loss. Nevertheless, weight regain often occurs. This systematic review examines the effect of weight regain on cardiometabolic health and summarizes these results in the metabolic syndrome prevalence as integrated endpoint.
A literature search was performed in PubMed and Web of Science. Studies were selected if they included participants aged <18 years with obesity and presented data before and after weight loss and after weight regain hereby reporting minimally 1 cardiovascular risk factor at every assessment. After screening, nine articles remained. Generally, the diastolic BP re-increased after weight regain, whereas for systolic BP a sustained result for 6 months was reported with an increase during longer follow-up. No significant changes in fasting glucose were reported after weight regain compared to baseline. Regarding triglycerides, a complete weight regain re-increased the lowered values to baseline, whereas a partial regain resulted in a sustained decrease in triglycerides in 2 studies and an increase to intermediate levels in 1 paper. HDL-cholesterol only rose several months after initiating treatment. Hs-CRP remained lowered for a longer period than the moment where the weight loss nadir was achieved.

Exposure to varying ammonia concentrations (10 and 25 mg N/L) and exposure times (7 and 14 days) resulted in damage to C. fluminea intestinal tissue, according to histological analysis. Furthermore, intestinal inflammatory responses and damage to the antioxidant system were revealed through qPCR, ELISA, and biochemical analysis experiments. The distance from the soil sample location to the nearest likely industrial source was the most important factor in determining cadmium and copper concentrations, while distance to the nearest road was more important for lead and zinc pollution. Soil parent materials, pH, organic matter, and clay particle size were the key factors influencing accumulation of arsenic, chromium, and nickel. Spatial auto-correlation between levels of soil metal pollution and industrial agglomeration can enable a more targeted approach to pollution control measures.
