The aim of this study is to evaluate whether the three-dimensional (3D) morphology of the mandibular condyle, glenoid fossa, and mandible correlated with menton deviation in facial asymmetry.
Thirty adults (15 males and 15 females; mean age, 23.2 ± 3.8 years) with facial asymmetry were included. Linear, angular, and volumetric measurements of the 3D morphology of the mandibular condyle, glenoid fossa, and mandible were recorded using computed tomography (CT) images. The right/left differences were obtained by subtracting the left value from the right value, and an independent t test was used to compare the differences between the females and males. Multiple regression analysis was performed to identify the correlation between the right/left difference of the 3D morphology and menton deviation.
The results of the comparative analysis did not show any statistical difference between the females and males (P > .05), so the females and males were combined. Multiple regression analysis for the mandibular condyle, glenoid fossa, and mandible showed that neck length, ramus length, and frontal ramal inclination had positive influences on menton deviation, with 76.5% of explanatory power. The neck length and head volume of the mandibular condyle when only the mandibular condyle was considered, and the ramus length and frontal ramal inclination when only the mandible was considered had positive influence on menton deviation with 69.9% and 68.6% explanatory power, respectively. On the other hand, when only considering glenoid fossa, the glenoid fossa had little effect on menton deviation with 15.7% of explanatory power.
In facial asymmetry, the right/left differences in mandibular condyle and mandible have more impact on the menton deviation than the right/left differences in glenoid fossa.

To evaluate the association between sleep duration and weight gain and incident overweight/obesity in the population of China.
Data were derivedfrom the China Health and Nutrition Survey. Adult participants with baseline data of sleep duration and body mass index (BMI) and who received at least one follow-up evaluation were selected to analyze the association of sleep duration with weight gain(n = 12,871) and incident overweight/obesity(n = 7,752). Daily sleep duration was categorized into five groups ≤ 6, 7, 8 (as reference), 9, and ≥ 10h. The study outcomes were weight gain ≥ 5kg and incident overweight/obesity (BMI ≥ 24kg/m

Adjusted Cox proportional hazards models showed that only short sleep duration (≤ 6h) significantly increased the risk of weight gain ≥ 5kg (HR 1.160, 95% CI 1.005-1.339, p < 0.001) and incident overweight/obesity (HR 1.403, 95% CI 1.185-1.660, p < 0.001), whereas sleep duration 9h was significantly associated with a lower risk of incident overweight/obesity (HR 0.817, 95% CI 0.700-0.953, p = 0.010). In the current work, we propose a pressurization technique applied to the zebrafish atrium to quantify mechanical properties of the myocardium under passive tension. By further measuring deformation, we obtain a pressure-stretch relationship that is used to identify constitutive models of the zebrafish embryonic cardiac tissue. Two-dimensional results are compared with a three-dimensional finite element analysis based on reconstructed embryonic heart geometry. Through these steps, we found that the myocardium of zebrafish results in a stiffness on the order of 10 kPa immediately after the looping stage of development. During ventilation, nebulized ~3-micron-sized fluid droplets were delivered into the model. Regional delivery, quantified by precision weighing individual airways, was highly reproducible. A successful strategy to control regional deposition was achieved by combining an inspiratory wave form with a "breath hold" pause after each inspiration. Specifically, the second generation of the tree was successfully targeted, and deposition was increased by up to four times in generation 2 when compared to a ventilation without the breath hold (p less then 0.0001). Breath hold was also demonstrated to facilitate deposition into blocked regions of the model, which mimic airway closure during an asthma that receive no flow during inhalation. Additionally, visualization experiments demonstrated that in the absence of fluid flow, the deposition of 3-micron water droplets is dominated by gravity, which, to our knowledge, has not been confirmed under standard laboratory conditions.

Depression is a chronic non communicable disease. It is a growing public health concern with established links with a number of co-morbidities, including diabetes mellitus. The study aimed to estimate the prevalence of depression at a population level, establish the depression sub-population phenotypic characteristics while exploring for links between depression and a spectrum of glycemic abnormalities.
A nationally representative cross-sectional study was conducted in Malta between 2014 and 2016. Participants were categorized into different sub-populations according to their glycaemic status. Depression was prevalent in 17.15% (CI 95% 16.01-18.36) with a female predominance. Despite knowledge about eating disorder symptoms in children and adolescents in the general population, relatively little is known about self-reported and sex-specific eating-disorder-related psychopathology, as well as its specific correlates.
880 German school-attending adolescents (15.4±2.2 years) and 30 female patients with AN (16.2±1.6 years) were studied. All participants completed the Eating Disorder Inventory-2 and a Body Image Questionnaire.
There were more overweight males than females (15.2% vs 10.1%, p < 0.001), but more females with underweight than males (6.2% vs. 2.5%, p < .001). Negative body evaluations (p < .001) and dissatisfaction (p < .001) were significantly more frequent in females. Compared to underweight female patients with AN, underweight school-attending females had less negative body evaluations (p < .001) and lower scores on 5 of the 11 EDI-2 subscales (p < .001; p < .05).
Males were more overweight than females, females more underweight. Body image was more important to female than to male youth, yet without reaching pathological values when compared to female patients with AN. Complex emotional and cognitive challenges seem to be a representative factor for eating pathology rather than simply being underweight. These aspects may be relevant for the shift from a thinness-related focus in girls in the general population to the development of an eating disorder.

Esophageal cancer (ECa) is the 7th most incident cancer and the 6th leading cause of cancer-related death. Most patients are diagnosed with locally advanced or metastatic disease, enduring poor survival. Biomarkers enabling early cancer detection may improve patient management, treatment effectiveness, and survival, are urgently needed. In this context, epigenetic-based biomarkers such as DNA methylation are potential candidates.
Herein, we sought to identify and validate DNA methylation-based biomarkers for early detection and prediction of response to therapy in ECa patients. Promoter methylation levels were assessed in a series of treatment-naïve ECa, post-neoadjuvant treatment ECa, and normal esophagus tissues, using quantitative methylation-specific PCR for COL14A1, GPX3, and ZNF569.
ZNF569 methylation (ZNF569me) levels significantly differed between ECa and normal samples (p< 0.001). Moreover, COL14A1 methylation (COL14A1me) and GPX3 methylation (GPX3me) levels discriminated adenocarcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas, respectively, from normal samples (p= 0.002 and p= 0.009, respectively). COL14A1me & ZNF569me accurately identified adenocarcinomas (82.29%) whereas GPX3me & ZNF569me identified squamous cell carcinomas with 81.73% accuracy. Furthermore, ZNF569me and GPX3me levels significantly differed between normal and pre-treated ECa.
The biomarker potential of a specific panel of methylated genes for ECa was confirmed. These might prove useful for early detection and might allow for the identification of minimal residual disease after adjuvant therapy.

While knowledge of onset of smoking tobacco, and associated risk factors can aid the formulation of evidence-based policy and interventions, such information is scarce in South Africa. We assessed age at onset of tobacco smoking in South Africa and identified its risk factors.
We analysed data of 15,316 respondents aged 15-98 years from the 2012 South African National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Descriptive statistics and survival analysis techniques were used alongside weighted percentages.
Overall lifetime prevalence of smoking was 20.5%. Among the 3360 ever-smoked respondents, the overall median age at smoking onset was 18 years (Inter-quartile range (IQR) =5) with 2% starting before age 10 while 60% had smoked before age 20. Likelihood of tobacco smoking was higher among adolescents (<=20 years) and those aged 20-29 years than those aged > = 60 years, thrice higher among males, 29% higher among urban dwellers and thrice higher in Western Cape and Free State than in North West Province.

Several therapeutically important mutations in cancers are economically detected using immunohistochemistry (IHC), which highlights the overexpression of specific antigens associated with the mutation. However, IHC panels can be imprecise and relatively expensive in low-income settings. On the other hand, although hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining used to visualize the general tissue morphology is a routine and low cost, it does not highlight any specific antigen or mutation.
Using the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) mutation in breast cancer as an example, we strengthen the case for cost-effective detection and screening of overexpression of HER2 protein in H&E-stained tissue.
We use computational methods that reliably detect subtle morphological changes associated with the over-expression of mutation-specific proteins directly from H&E images.

Digital pathology has the capability to meet some of these unprecedented challenges by allowing remote diagnoses to be made at home, during periods of social distancing or self-isolation. However, while digital pathology allows diagnoses to be made on standard computer screens, unregulated home environments may not be conducive for optimal viewing conditions. There is also a paucity of experimental evidence available to support the minimum display requirements for digital pathology. This study presents a Point-of-Use Quality Assurance (POUQA) tool for remote assessment of viewing conditions for reporting digital pathology slides. The tool is a psychophysical test combining previous work from successfully implemented quality assurance tools in both pathology and radiology to provide a minimally intrusive display screen validation task, before viewing digital slides. The test is specific to pathology assessment in that it requires visual discrimination between colors derived from hematoxylin and eosin staining, with a perceptual difference of ±1 delta E (dE). This tool evaluates the transfer of a 1 dE signal through the digital image display chain, including the observers' contrast and color responses within the test color range. In low-resource regions of the world, discharge against medical advice (DAMA) is one empiric contributory factor to poor in-hospital outcome that is not often mentioned. This study aims to investigate the determinants of DAMA from a rural neurosurgical service in a developing country.
This was a prospective observational study of all patients who discharged against medical advice in our service between November 2018 and October 2019.
There were 88 patients, 67 (76.1%) males, in the study, (MF = 3.21), representing 17.4% of our patient population in the study period. The peak incidence was in the 20-29 years age group which accounted for 37.5% of the cases. About 55% of the patients presented directly to our center; 31.8% were referred from other hospitals, while 3.4% came from traditional caregivers and 1.1% from religious homes. Head injury was the most common indication for presentation (76.1% of the cases). The duration of hospital stay ranged from 2 h to 14 days. Majority of the patients (87.5%) left the hospital within 8 h of presentation. The reason for DAMA was financial constraints in 50% of cases, inadequate health literacy in 20.5%, financial constraints and poor health literacy together in 12.5%, religious misgivings in 4.5%, and traditional belief in 2.3%. Neurotrauma was predictive of early DAMA (
= 0.001).
The rate of DAMA was high in our study. Financial constraints with other socioeconomic limitations were the most common causes of DAMA in our environment.

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) represents an important cause of infection, particularly in immunocompromised patients. Spondylodiscitis is unusual and may be associated with underlying causes such as drug abuse. Timely diagnosis and treatment are critical, as without this, patients will demonstrate progressive neurological deterioration. Here, we present a rare case of
spondylodiscitis in a 36-year-old male, along with a focused literature review.

Using the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) mutation in breast cancer as an example, we strengthen the case for cost-effective detection and screening of overexpression of HER2 protein in H&E-stained tissue. We use computational methods that reliably detect subtle morphological changes associated with the over-expression of mutation-specific proteins directly from H&E images. This study aims to investigate the determinants of DAMA from a rural neurosurgical service in a developing country. This was a prospective observational study of all patients who discharged against medical advice in our service between November 2018 and October 2019. There were 88 patients, 67 (76.1%) males, in the study, (MF = 3.21), representing 17.4% of our patient population in the study period. The peak incidence was in the 20-29 years age group which accounted for 37.5% of the cases. About 55% of the patients presented directly to our center; 31.8% were referred from other hospitals, while 3.4% came from traditional caregivers and 1.1% from religious homes. Head injury was the most common indication for presentation (76.1% of the cases). The duration of hospital stay ranged from 2 h to 14 days. Majority of the patients (87.5%) left the hospital within 8 h of presentation. The reason for DAMA was financial constraints in 50% of cases, inadequate health literacy in 20.5%, financial constraints and poor health literacy together in 12.5%, religious misgivings in 4.5%, and traditional belief in 2.3%. Manipulating liquids with tunable shape and optical functionalities in real time is important for electroactive flow devices and optoelectronic devices, but remains a great challenge. Here, we demonstrate electrotunable liquid sulfur microdroplets in an electrochemical cell. We observe electrowetting and merging of sulfur droplets under different potentiostatic conditions, and successfully control these processes via selective design of sulfiphilic/sulfiphobic substrates. Moreover, we employ the electrowetting phenomena to create a microlens based on the liquid sulfur microdroplets and tune its characteristics in real time through changing the shape of the liquid microdroplets in a fast, repeatable, and controlled manner. Synovial sarcoma (SS) is a malignant neoplasm that arises from soft tissues proximal to the joints. It occurs primarily at the major joints of the extremities, but may also occur in the deep soft tissues around the joints. While primary renal synovial sarcoma (PRSS) is extremely rare, it is important to have a better understanding of their imaging and clinical features to establish an effective treatment plan. Correct identification of PRSS is also useful for treating renal neoplasms.
A 56-year-old Chinese man was admitted to our hospital due to moderate, paroxysmal left-sided loin pain.
Renal enhanced computed tomography (CT) scanning showed a relatively hypovascular lesion with calcification in the left kidney. A radical nephrectomy was performed in the left kidney. Postoperative pathology indicated SS with necrosis. The immunohistochemical findings were as follows 34βE12 (Epithelium+), Bcl-2(+), CD99(+), CK-pan((Epithelium+), EMA(Epithelium+), Ki-67(+60%), and Vimentin(+), CD34(-).

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the serious complications of diabetes mellitus. Without further treatment, it can evolve into the stage of proliferation, which will lead to the formation of new blood vessels, vitreous hemorrhage, or anterior retinal hemorrhage, which will lead to severe vision loss and increase the risk of blindness.
The research literature on the risk factors of diabetic retinopathy published as of July 1, 2020 was searched through MEDLINE, Embase, ovid, Web of Science, Wanfang, CNKI, and other databases, The search strategy has been first developed in MEDLINE using MeSH subject headings combined with free-text terms and Stata12.0 software was used for meta-analysis.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) are common disorders that manifest themselves in the late luteal phase, and significantly interfere with an individual's daily activities. Clinical evidence suggests that traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) may ease PMS/PMDD symptoms. Here, we review a protocol for exploring the effectiveness and safety of TCM in PMS/PMDD management.
We will conduct a literature search for randomized controlled trials (RCT) for TCM use in PMS/PMDD on PubMed, web of science, EMBASE, the Cochrane central register of controlled trials (Cochrane Library), Chinese national knowledge infrastructure, Chinese VIP Information, Wanfang, as well as Chinese biomedical literature database. The search included all relevant reports for up to June 1, 2020. The search results were independently analyzed by 2 reviewers who extracted the data. RCT quality will be assessed using the risk-of-bias tool. The evidence will be inspected using the grading of recommendations assessment development and evaluation (GRADE). We will utilize Stata and Revman for systematic review and meta-analysis and analysis of direct and indirect evidence.
Based on current evidence, this study will elucidate the rationale for the utilization of TCM in PMS/PMDD treatment.
Conclusions from this study will inform about the effectiveness and safety of TCM in PMS/PMDD management.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) are common disorders that manifest themselves in the late luteal phase, and significantly interfere with an individual's daily activities. Clinical evidence suggests that traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) may ease PMS/PMDD symptoms. Here, we review a protocol for exploring the effectiveness and safety of TCM in PMS/PMDD management. We will conduct a literature search for randomized controlled trials (RCT) for TCM use in PMS/PMDD on PubMed, web of science, EMBASE, the Cochrane central register of controlled trials (Cochrane Library), Chinese national knowledge infrastructure, Chinese VIP Information, Wanfang, as well as Chinese biomedical literature database. The search included all relevant reports for up to June 1, 2020. The search results were independently analyzed by 2 reviewers who extracted the data. RCT quality will be assessed using the risk-of-bias tool. The evidence will be inspected using the grading of recommendations assessment development and evaluation (GRADE). We will utilize Stata and Revman for systematic review and meta-analysis and analysis of direct and indirect evidence. Permeability is measured at 2, 4, 6, and 24 hr after TBI by removing a piece of terminal ileum, tying the ends, filling the lumen with FITC-labeled dextran, and then measuring how **** of the dextran moves into the surrounding solution bath over time using a fluorescent plate reader. In this regard, accurate evaluation of laboratory indicators at the beginning and during COVID-19 can help physicians to adjust appropriate treatment and provide special and prompt care for those in need.
To evaluate the influence of lightness difference of a single anterior maxillary tooth on difference smile attractiveness.

Dispersion, or within-person performance variability across cognitive tests, is a potential marker of cognitive decline. This study examined group differences in dispersion between LLMD and nondepressed healthy controls (HC) and investigated whether dispersion was a predictor of cognitive performance 1 year later in LLMD. We also explored demographic, clinical, and structural imaging correlates of dispersion in LLMD and HC. We hypothesized that dispersion would be greater in LLMD compared with HC and would be associated with worse cognitive performance 1 year later in LLMD.
Participants were enrolled in the Neurobiology of Late-Life Depression, a naturalistic longitudinal investigation of the predictors of poor illness course in LLMD.
The baseline sample consisted of 121 older adults with LLMD and 39 HC; of these subjects, 94 LLMD and 35 HC underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). One-year cognitive data were available for 107 LLMD patients.
All participants underwent detailed clinical and structural MRI at baseline. LLMD participants also completed a comprehensive cognitive evaluation 1 year later.
Higher test dispersion was evident in LLMD when compared with nondepressed controls. Greater baseline dispersion predicted 1-year cognitive decline in LLMD patients even when controlling for baseline cognitive functioning and demographic and clinical confounders. Dispersion was correlated with white matter lesions in LLMD but not HC. Dispersion was also correlated with anxiety in both LLMD and HC.

Then, this compound was coupled covalently to the carrier protein bovine serum albumin/ovalbumin and amino-functionalized paramagnetic beads. Alternating selection in solution and immobilization in microtiter wells were used to pan mRNA-ribosome-antibody complexes. After several rounds of ribosome display, three variants were selected from a random library of the bilin-binding protein. The variants that could bind complex PQ with high affinity and exhibit IC50 values as low as 14.039 ± 0.970 ng/mL were identified. Moreover, the limits of detection reached 0.083 ± 0.011 ng/mL. Here, we hypothesise that VSG offspring will have altered ghrelin signalling compared to offspring of Sham dams as a result of reduced in utero ghrelin. At postnatal day (PND)21, male and female offspring of dams that have previously received VSG have an increase in mRNA expression for the ghrelin receptor in the hypothalamus compared to Sham offspring, and the expression of GOAT is lower in females compared to males. A computerized literature search of electronic databases (PubMed and CAB abstracts) was performed along with hand searches of library resources for relevant papers, books, abstracts and conference proceedings. A random-effect model was employed to calculate pooled seroprevalence estimates with 95% confidence intervals, and I2 statistic was used to assess heterogeneity. Further, moderator analysis was performed to evaluate the effect of geographical area on the seroprevalence in roe deer. This review is mainly focused on the electrochemical reduction of NAD+ to NADH with specific details on the mechanism and kinetics of the reaction. It provides emphasis on the different routes (direct and mediated) to electrochemically regenerate NADH from NAD+ highlighting the NAD dimer formation. Also, it describes the electrocatalysts developed until now and the scope for development in this area of research.
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease with an increased risk of hospitalization. Multiple studies have reported SLE flare, infection, and cardiovascular (CV) events as the most common reasons for hospitalization. The aim of this study was to use a large US population-based database to comprehensively analyze all indications for adult SLE hospitalization and reasons for in-hospital mortality.
We conducted a retrospective study of SLE hospitalizations in 2017 from the National Inpatient Sample database. The "reason for hospitalization" and "reason for in-hospital mortality" in patients with SLE were divided into 19 categories based on their principal International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10) diagnosis.
A total of 180 975 hospitalizations carried either a principal or secondary ICD-10 code for SLE. The leading reasons for hospitalization were CV (16%), rheumatologic (13%), infectious (11%), respiratory (10%), and gastrointestinal (10%). S a small percentage of hospitalizations. CV diagnoses were the most common reason for hospitalization. In-hospital death occurred in 1 of every 50 SLE hospitalizations. Infectious and CV diagnoses were the most common reason for in-hospital death.
This post hoc analysis evaluated the safety and efficacy of open-label sarilumab in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who completed the phase III double-blind ASCERTAIN study (NCT01768572) and switched from intravenous (IV) tocilizumab to subcutaneous (SC) sarilumab, or who continued SC sarilumab in the open-label extension (OLE) study EXTEND (NCT01146652).
Patients who completed ASCERTAIN were eligible to enroll in EXTEND to receive sarilumab 200mg SC every 2 weeks (Q2W). Safety and efficacy were reported through 96 weeks in the OLE in patients who switched from tocilizumab IV to sarilumab 200mg SC Q2W, who switched from sarilumab 150mg SC Q2W to sarilumab 200mg SC Q2W, or who continued sarilumab 200mg SC Q2W.
Of 175 patients who completed ASCERTAIN, 168 (96%) enrolled in EXTEND, and 38 of these patients (23%) discontinued the OLE. Cumulative sarilumab exposure during follow-up was 273.7 patient-years. No new safety signals were identified, infections occurred at a rate of 59.9/100 patient-years, and there were no cases of grade 4 neutropenia. Efficacy-as assessed by Disease Activity Score (28 joints) based on C-reactive protein, Clinical Disease Activity Index, and Health Assessment Questionnaire-Disability Index scores-was sustained over 96 weeks of follow-up when switching to, or continuing, sarilumab 200mg SC Q2W.

The aim is to re-unite post nail aseptic non-union of diaphyseal femoral fractures in an economical and safe way with almost certainty, reducing dependence on others with early rehabilitation. The cascade of fracture healing is dependent on mechanical stability and uninterrupted cellular and bio-chemical responses (biology). Intra-medullary nailing in fresh diaphyseal femoral fractures is gold standard treatment with high success rate, still non-union of these fractures is reported, though the incidence has declined considerably.
This prospective study conducted at level one trauma centre on twenty-one patients in four years starting from July 2015 to June 2019. Eighteen patients had non-union with intact implant and three had broken nail. Non-union site approached through lateral approach. Non-union site fixed by 4.5 broad combi-hole LCP or distal femoral locking compression plate (DF-LCP) depending on fracture site. Decortication, Bone grafting done retaining the previous nail in situ in eighteen patiening and providing both mechanical and biological environments to convert non-union into osseous union. It will be a treatment of choice in times to come.

The effect of using closed suction drainage system with the proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA) system fixation on outcomes in treating intertrochanteric fractures (ITFs) is still unknown. This prospective randomized controlled trial aimed to examine whether routine drainage is useful for PFNA fixation in ITFs.
A total of 80 patients with acute ITFs were treated with closed or mini-open reduction with PFNA fixation at the National Cheng Kung University Hospital and 60 eligible patients were randomized for whether to receive suction drainage. In clinical outcomes, the visual analog scale (VAS), morphine equivalent dosage, injured thigh width, body temperature, wound condition and wound infection were measured on postoperative day 1, 2, 4, 10, and 90. In laboratory outcomes, we evaluated hemoglobin and hematocrit levels postoperatively at different time points. Blood transfusion and total blood loss (TBL) were measured by Mercuriali's formula in millimeter.
The results revealed that the amount of blystem may have manifested no short-term benefit for wound condition postoperatively.

Data of 28 patients who developed PWD after HA were prospectively analyzed. After examining the biochemical content of the drainage fluid collected on postoperative day 6, to find out if the drainage fluid was transudate or exudate, it was compared with the patient's serum values according to the Light criteria. Subsequently, biological and proteomic analyzes of both drainage fluid and serum were performed. The similarities and differences in terms of protein concentrations, protein identities were examined. In the drainage fluid, we analyzed lymph-specific proteins.

Whole-mount in situ hybridization results indicated that DjRhoA was expressed in the brain primordia and intestine during regeneration. Knockdown of DjRhoA induces defects in the brain and intestine. These results suggested that DjRhoA was responsible for the regeneration of brain and intestine in Dugesia japonica.

Gut-related symptoms and an increase in markers of gut dysfunction have been observed in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It remains unclear whether exercise, in relation to inducing hypoxia, plays a role in disturbances in protein digestion and amino acid absorption and whole body protein kinetics. Sixteen clinically stable patients with moderate-to-very severe COPD and 12 matched healthy subjects completed the study. Protein digestion and amino acid absorption, whole body protein kinetics were measured in the postabsorptive state via a continuous infusion of stable tracers in combination with orally administered stable tracer sips during 20 min of walking exercise and up to 4 h post exercise. In addition, concentrations of short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) and amino acids were measured. Patients with COPD completed one study day, walking at maximal speed, whereas healthy subjects completed two, one matched to the speed of a patient with COPD and one at maximal speed. The patients withge of the response of the gut to aerobic exercise is of importance.One in three Americans suffer from kidney diseases such as chronic kidney disease, and one of the etiologies is suggested to be long-term renal hypoxia. In this report, we sought to determine if sympathetic activation evoked by lower body negative pressure (LBNP) would decrease cortical and medullary oxygenation in humans. LBNP was activated in a graded fashion (LBNP; -10, -20, and -30 mmHg), as renal oxygenation was measured (T2*, blood oxygen level dependent, BOLD MRI; n = 8). At a separate time, renal blood flow velocity (RBV) to the kidney was measured (n = 13) as LBNP was instituted. LBNP significantly reduced RBV (P = 0.041) at -30 mmHg of LBNP (Δ-8.17 ± 3.75 cm/s). Moreover, both renal medullary and cortical T2* were reduced with the graded LBNP application (main effect for the level of LBNP P = 0.0008). During recovery, RBV rapidly returned to baseline, whereas medullary T2* remained depressed into the first minute of recovery.
