Here, we compared soil N availability, including net N mineralization and nitrification rate, and microbial communities between canopy soils (organic soils) collected at various heights of a large Cercidiphyllum japonicum tree and ground soils (organic and mineral soils) in a cool-temperate old-growth forest of Japan. The canopy soils had significantly different N availability (mass-based higher but volume-based lower) and microbial communities from the ground mineral soils. Among organic soils, the height of the soil had an impact on the microbial communities but not on the N availability, which agreed with our hypothesis. Despite the decrease in fungal abundance in the higher soils, the increase in certain components of the cellulose-decomposing fungi and oligotrophic bacteria may contribute to the available N production. Also, the abundance of ammonia-oxidizers did not change with the height, which would be important for the nitrification rate. However, some isolates showed a high divergence from the known reference type strains, indicating that they may represent species yet to be properly characterized and described.   • Bacterial spores are a major challenge in industrial decontamination processes owing to their extreme resistance. High-pressure (HP) of 150 MPa at 37 °C can trigger the germination of spores, making them lose their extreme resistance. Once their resistance is lost, germinated spores can easily be inactivated by a mild decontamination step. The implementation of this gentle germination-inactivation strategy is hindered by the presence of a subpopulation of so-called high-pressure superdormant (HPSD) spores, which resist germination or germinate only very slowly in response to HP. It is essential to understand the properties of HPSD spores and the underlying causes of superdormancy to tackle superdormant spores and further develop germination-inactivation strategies involving HP. This study investigated factors influencing the prevalence of HPSD spores and successfully isolated them by combining buoyant density centrifugation and fluorescence-activated cell sorting, which allowed further characterisation of HPS the germination capacity was lower than that of the initial population. The fact that the majority of spores lost superdormancy when exposed a second time to the same trigger makes it unlikely that there is one factor that determines whether a spore germinates with a certain HP treatment or not. Instead, it seems possible that there are other reversible or cumulative causes. Replacement of beef fat fully by a hot-set GE system instead of using a fat-GE mixture was effective in reducing oxidation.     We evaluated the immunohistochemical expression of EAAT2 (the most important glutamate transporter), pyruvate carboxylase and glutamine synthetase in 17 angiocentric gliomas.

    EAAT2 was never expressed (0%) in the neoplastic cells in none of the cases studied. Pyruvate carboxylase was expressed in the cytoplasm of the neoplastic cells in 16/17 cases (94 %). Glutamine synthetase was expressed in the cytoplasm of the neoplastic cells in 15/17 cases (88 %).

    This study aimed to investigate the mediating role of social support in the relationship between resilience and quality of life (QoL) among Turkish patients with early-stage breast cancer.

    The study used a descriptive and cross-sectional design and was carried out in the oncology ward of a hospital in the Central Anatolia region of Turkey. A demographic-disease survey, the Turkish version of the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale 25, the Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale, the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer QoL Questionnaire Core, and the QoL Questionnaire Breast Cancer 23 were used to interview 113 patients with breast cancer.

    Social support played a partial mediator role in the relationship between resilience and functional QoL. There was a negative correlation between functional QoL Questionnaire Breast Cancer 23 and psychological resilience and social support (
    < 0.005). The mediation effect ratio was 10.2% (

    This study was conducted to determine the awareness of nursing students about the warning signs of cancer. The research was planned as a descriptive and cross-sectional study. The research was completed with 460 nursing students between February 2019 and May 2019.

    The average age of the students participating in the study was 20.05 ± 2.04 years. Female nursing students were more familiar with the warning signs of cancer, than male nursing students. A demographic-disease survey, the Turkish version of the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale 25, the Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale, the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer QoL Questionnaire Core, and the QoL Questionnaire Breast Cancer 23 were used to interview 113 patients with breast cancer. Social support played a partial mediator role in the relationship between resilience and functional QoL. We analyzed a sample of 107 individuals for CNV alterations and checked the genes located within the altered loci (1366). Then, we characterized the subjects for distinct phenotypes. After creating subsamples based on symptoms, the CNVs related to each specific symptom were used to create distinct networks associated with each phenotype (18 in total in the sample under analysis). These networks were independently clustered and enriched to identify potential common pathways involved in autism and variably combined with the clinical phenotype.   • To investigate if inflammation detected by MRI or ultrasound at rheumatoid arthritis (RA) onset is predictive of erosive progression or poor response to methotrexate monotherapy, and to investigate if subclinical inflammation in remission is predictive of future treatment escalation or erosive progression.

    In a 2-year study, 218 patients with disease-modifying antirheumatic drug-naïve early RA were treated by a tight-control treat-to-target strategy corresponding to current recommendations. MRI and ultrasound were performed at regular intervals. Baseline imaging-based inflammation measures were analysed as predictors for early methotrexate failure and erosive progression using univariate and multivariate regression adjusted for clinical, laboratory and radiographic measures. In patients in remission after 1 year, imaging measures were analysed as predictors of treatment escalation and erosive progression during the second year. Instability of the scFv was caused by specific amino acids within the framework regions (FWR) that can be identified by computational modeling. Substitutions of the amino acids causing instability, or humanization of the FWRs, corrected tonic signaling of the CAR, without modifying antigen specificity, and enhanced the antitumor effects of CAR-T cells. Instability of the scFv was caused by specific amino acids within the framework regions (FWR) that can be identified by computational modeling.     GSE113825 was obtained from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database and analyzed to identify the differentially expressed lncRNAs in OA. Gene enrichment analyses and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes biological process analysis were performed through Metascape (http//metascape.org/gp). The interactions among LINC02288, miR-374a-3p and RTN3 were determined using RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) assays and dual luciferase reporter assays. Chondrocyte apoptosis was examined using flow cytometry. Western blot assays were conducted to assess the pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic markers.

    We identified a total of 4,491 differentially expressed lncRNAs. We focused on LINC02288 as the top-ranked up-regulated lncRNA in OA as indicated by a significant p-value. LINC02288 was significantly up-regulated, which was further verified by a real-time polymerase chain reaction. Down-regulation of LINC02288 significantly reduced the apoptosis of OA chondrocytes induced by interleukin-1β and the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. These effects were further verified in an OA rat model. An RIP assay and dual luciferase assay further confirmed that LINC02288 served as a sponge of miR-374a-3p. Moreover, the overexpression of RTN3 could partially reverse the effects of LINC02288 knockdown, mediating inhibitory effects on chondrocyte apoptosis and the inflammatory response. Importantly, the multivalent ions present in the material and its defect structure endow stable pseudocapacitance within the inactive region of ORR and OER; as a result, a low charge-discharge voltage gap (0.43 V at 10 mA cm-2 ) was achieved when it was employed in a flexible hybrid Zn-based battery.   • A red pigment was prepared by reaction of chlorogenic acid (CGA) with tryptophan (TRP) in air at pH 9 (37% w/w yield) and evaluated as food dye. The main component of pigment was formulated as an unusual benzochromeno[2,3-b]indole linked to a TRP unit, featuring a cyanine type chromophore (λmax 542, 546 nm, 1% extinction coefficient of the sodium salt = 244 ± 2). The chromophore showed a minimal pH dependence and proved stable for at least 3 h at 90 °C, both at pH 3.6 or 7.0, whereas red wine anthocyanins showed a substantial (30%) and betanin a complete abatement after 1 h at the acidic pHs. An intense coloring of different food matrices was obtained with the pigment at 0.01 % w/w. No toxicity was observed up to 0.2 mg/mL on hepatic and colonic cell lines. These data make this dye a promising alternative for red coloring of food.The potential of two different hyperspectral imaging systems (visible near infrared spectroscopy (Vis-NIR) and NIR) was investigated to determine TVB-N contents in tilapia fillets during cold storage. The extracts of berry processing by-products by green extraction method contain valuable bioactive constituents and could be of high interest for applications in functional foods and nutraceuticals.A novel magnetic boron nitride nanosheets (Fe3O4@BNNSs) composite-based magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) method was employed to analyse six plant growth regulators (PGRs) in tomatoes combined with high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS).   • It is estimated that approximately one-tenth of the US population suffers from substance use disorders (SUD), a problem that is compounded when one considers the impact that drug addiction could have on treatment outcomes for many other chronic diseases. Thus, addiction medicine has become an important component of many successful urban primary care practices and residencies across the country. Our program sought to improve the confidence of our residents in managing SUD by instituting a team-based learning (TBL) activity that focused on the diagnosis and medication-assisted treatment of these illnesses.

    The class of 80 internal medicine residents were divided into groups of approximately 16 residents, and during the TBL sessions further divided into teams of three to four. Each TBL session consisted of an individual readiness assurance test, a group discussion of the correct answers, and a PowerPoint-based team application activity. Surveys were conducted for each group to assess the residents' attitudes after completing the activity.

    Of residents, 69 of 80 completed the survey. The response to the TBL exercise was overwhelmingly positive, with most residents in agreement that the activity increased their knowledge and confidence in diagnosing and treating patients with SUD.

    Overall, this TBL activity was well received by the residents and subjectively increased their competence in managing patients with SUD. In addition, our modification to the traditional TBL format suggested that the theories and spirit behind TBL can be successfully adapted to meet the challenges and intricacies of internal medicine residency education.

    Health professions classrooms are filled with a new generation of students iGen/generation Z. **** is known about millennials' educational needs, but they no longer comprise the majority of student populations. Research indicates that curricular strategies once useful for millennials may be ineffective for iGen. Due to multiple and surprising generational differences including ubiquitous technology, verbal/social/reading skills, and attention spans, educators might struggle to reach iGen members and are encouraged to re-examine instructional methods with iGen in mind.

    We designed this 90-minute workshop to give educators an informed understanding of iGen and discuss curricular adaptations intended to maintain educational quality through a literature-based presentation, self-assessment activities, and case discussions. We delivered the session to multiple diverse groups of health professions educators and staff. The attendees evaluated the workshop's quality and its longitudinal impact using 5-point Likertunderstand both iGen students as well as how their own generational characteristics might relate to iGen members. Gaining this perspective allows educators to more adeptly create and deliver content to current health professions students.
    Recent endeavors from governing bodies such as the AAMC have formally recognized the importance of aseptic technique. AAMC guidelines include activities that all graduating physicians should be able to perform with minimum indirect supervision and were developed to recognize these needs. For example, the skills necessary for aseptic technique include daily safety habits and general physician procedures.

    We developed a scrub training curriculum and evaluated the program through a quasi-experimental study with a pre- and posttest design. Questions were developed to examine students' perceived knowledge and skills as related to the objectives of the course and to their anxieties, concerns, and future training needs.

    Between February 2020 and March 2020, 44 students completed the curriculum. Students indicated that self-efficacy significantly increased in all aspects of the curricular goals following curriculum completion. Students identified understanding OR etiquette as the most anxiety-provoking element associated with scrub training. They felt that more time could be spent elucidating this etiquette. On the other hand, tasks such as surgical hand hygiene were the least anxiety-inducing.

    We share this multimodal scrub training curriculum, mapped to the AAMC's guidelines, to reduce variability in teaching strategies and skills acquisition through a standardized curriculum. Also, we effectively imparted these skills and instilled a sense of confidence in learners as they worked to provide their best in patient care and safety.

GBS commonly presents after viral infections such as influenza virus, campylobacter jejuni, and zika virus. GBS commonly presents with a prolonged clinical course leading to increased morbidity among affected patients.     To examine the development of a scale for measuring sideways emotions, and to examine the relationship of sideways emotions with emotional expressivity of adolescents.

    The two-phase cross-sectional study was conducted at the educational institutions of Sargodha and Bhalwal, Pakistan from October 2, 2017 to October 6, 2018, and comprised of 300 adolescents, aged 18-24 years. In the first phase, development of the Sideways Emotion Scale for adolescents was done, while the second phase examined the correlation of sideways emotions with positive and negative emotional expressivity. The scale was developed using Exploratory Factor Analysis which was further correlated with the Positive Expressivity Scale and Negative Expressivity Scale.

    Alpha reliability coefficients ranged from 0.73 to 0.79 and were >0.70 cut off. Positive sideways emotions were positively correlated with positive emotional expressivity whereas negative sideways emotions were positively correlated with negative emotional expressivity.

    The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of neuromobilization (NM) on the pain and active forward flexion in participants with shoulder impingement syndrome (SIS).

    A randomized control trial was conducted in Social Security Hospital, Gujranwala. The duration of study was September 2016 to March 2018. A sample of 80 participants was selected and allocated in to two groups using computer generator method in simple random sampling technique. Consent was taken from patients with SIS for this trial. At the first session, participants were randomly assigned to either control group (n=40) or experimental group (n=40). After the baseline assessment routine physiotherapy was executed for both groups, while NM was provided to experimental group. Pain and active forward flexion (AFF) were evaluated at baseline, 5th week and 11th week. The data were entered and analyzed using SPSS (version 22.0).

    The experimental group compared with control group at 11th week had lower mean pain score 2.15 (1.66-2.64) vs 4.90 (4.41-5.40); between group difference, 1.82; 95% confidence interval (CI), -2.38 to -1.25; P ˂0.001 and Partial ƞ2=0.33, similarly with AFF 147.13 (142.46-151.79) vs 123.45(118.79-128.11); between group difference ,19.35; 95% CI, (12.86-25.83); P ˂ 0.001 and Partial ƞ2=0.30.     The retrospective study was conducted at the Paediatric Oncology Department of the Combined Military Hospital, Rawalpindi, Pakistan, and comprised newly-registered cases of acute myeloid leukaemia aged <18 years from January 1, 2012, onwards and who completed their treatment before January 31, 2019. Data was retrieved from medical records and was analysed using SPSS 23.

    Of the 206 cases, 130(63.1%) were males and 76(36.9%) were females. Overall mean age at diagnosis was 5.96±3.57 years (range 9 months to 15 years). Of the total, 6(2.9%) patients died before the start of treatment. Of the remaining, 43(21.5%) patients died during 1st induction chemotherapy, and 16(8%) during the post-induction period, with overall treatment-related mortality being 65(31.5%).     The aim of this study was to assess the influence of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) 4G/5G or tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) I/D polymorphisms in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) cases in a sample of Turkish population.

    PAI-1 4G/5G and tPA Alu-repeat I/D genetic polymorphisms in 153 COPD subjects and 160 controls were investigated using PCR-RFLP and PCR methods, respectively.

    4G allele frequency was 0.62 and 0.39 for COPD and control groups, respectively. 4G allele had an estimated 2.56- fold [95% CI = 1.85-3.53] increased risk of COPD. tPA I allele frequency was 0.55 and 0.50, for COPD and control groups, respectively. I allele had an estimated 1.19-fold [95% CI = 0.87-1.62] increased risk of COPD.
