We tested the hypothesis that the evolution of tolerance to one virus is traded-off against tolerance to others, rather than against resistance and identified the associated mechanisms. To do so, we challenged eighteen Arabidopsis thaliana genotypes with Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) and Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). We characterized plant life-history trait modifications associated with reduced effects of TuMV and CMV on plant seed production (fecundity tolerance) and life period (mortality tolerance), both measured as a norm of reaction across viral loads (range tolerance). Also, we analysed resistance-tolerance and tolerance-tolerance trade-offs. Results indicate that tolerance to TuMV is associated with changes in the length of the pre-reproductive and reproductive periods, and tolerance to CMV with resource reallocation from growth to reproduction; and that tolerance to TuMV is traded-off against tolerance to CMV in a virulence-dependent manner. Thus, this work provides novel insights on the mechanisms of plant tolerance and highlights the importance of considering the combined effect of different pathogens to understand how plant defences evolve. © The Author(s) 2020. The pup underwent medical treatment but died after two weeks; post-mortem examination and histology indicated sepsis as the cause of death. IAV NP antigen was detected by immunohistochemistry in the nasal mucosa, and sensitive real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction assays detected trace amounts of viral RNA within the lower respiratory tract, suggesting that the infection may have been cleared naturally. Here we built a procedure to survey A. flavus genes constitutively highly expressed in 83 transcriptome datasets obtained under various conditions affecting secondary metabolite production, to find promoters useful for heterologous expression of genes in A. oryzae. Results To test the ability of the promoters of the top 6 genes to induce production of a fungal secondary metabolite, ustiloxin B, we inserted the promoters before the start codon of ustR, which encodes the transcription factor of the gene cluster responsible for ustiloxin B biosynthesis, in A. oryzae. Four of the 6 promoters induced ustiloxin B production in all tested media (solid maize, liquid V8 and PDB media), and also ustR expression. Two of the 4 promoters were those of tef1 and gpdA, which are well characterized in A. oryzae and A. nidulans, respectively, whereas the other two, those of AFLA_030930 and AFLA_113120, are newly reported here and show activities comparable to that of the gpdA promoter with respect to induction of gene expression and ustiloxin B production. Conclusion We newly reported two sequences as promoter tools for secondary metabolite production in A. oryzae. The closest species based on 16S ribosomal RNA sequence was Anaerococcus prevotii strain 20548, with 97.6% sequence similarity. Considering phenotypic features and comparative genome studies, we propose the strain Marseille-P3557T as the type strain of Anaerococcus marasmi sp. nov., a new species within the genus Anaerococcus. © 2020 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Polyphenols have been part of human culture for about 6000 years. However, their mode of action in relation to wine tasting while eating is only beginning to be understood. This review, using analytical techniques and physicochemical concepts, attempts to summarize current knowledge and present an integrated view of the complex relationship between tannins, salivary proteins, lipids in food and in oral membranes. The action of tannins on taste sensations and astringency depends on their colloidal state. Although taste sensations are most likely due to interactions with taste receptors, astringency results from strong binding to proline-rich salivary proteins that otherwise lubricate the palate. Tannins disorder non-keratinized mucosa in mouth, possibly perturbing taste receptor function. The 10-15% ethanol present in wines potentiates this action. Cholesterol present in large quantities in keratinized mucosa prevents any disordering action on these oral membranes. Polyphenols bind strongly to the lipid droplets of fatty foods, a situation that reduces the astringency perceived when drinking a tannic wine, the so-called "camembert effect". Based on binding constants mainly measured by NMR, a comprehensive thermodynamic model of the interrelation between polyphenols, salivary proteins, lipids and taste receptors is presented.
Triple antimalarial combination therapies combine potent and rapidly cleared artemisinins or related synthetic ozonides, such as arterolane, with two, more slowly eliminated partner drugs to reduce the risk of resistance. We aimed to assess the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of arterolane-piperaquine-mefloquine versus arterolane-piperaquine and artemether-lumefantrine for the treatment of uncomplicated falciparum malaria in Kenyan children.
In this single-centre, open-label, randomised, non-inferiority trial done in Kilifi County Hospital, Kilifi, coastal Kenya, children with uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria were recruited. Eligible patients were aged 2-12 years and had an asexual parasitaemia of 5000-250 000 parasites per μL. The exclusion criteria included the presence of an acute illness other than malaria, the inability to tolerate oral medications, treatment with an artemisinin derivative in the previous 7 days, a known hypersensitivity or contraindication to any of the study drugs, ane-piperaquine), headache (n=13; n=4; n=5), and abdominal pain (n=7; n=5; n=5) were the most frequently reported adverse events. There were no deaths.
This study shows that arterolane-piperaquine-mefloquine is an efficacious and safe treatment for uncomplicated falciparum malaria in children and could potentially be used to prevent or delay the emergence of antimalarial resistance.

Here, we report cryo-EM structures of 1-57 and 2-7 in complex with spike, revealing each of these antibodies to utilize a distinct mechanism to bypass or accommodate RBD mutations. Notably, each antibody represented an immune response with recognition distinct from those of frequent antibody classes. Moreover, many epitope residues recognized by 1-57 and 2-7 were outside hotspots of evolutionary pressure for ACE2 binding and neutralizing antibody escape. We suggest the therapeutic use of antibodies, such as 1-57 and 2-7, which target less prevalent epitopes, could ameliorate issues of monoclonal antibody escape.
Fetal death, one of the major adverse pregnancy outcomes, is especially common in low and middle-income countries. Placental lesions may play an important role in the etiology of fetal and possibly neonatal death. Prior research relating placental lesions to fetal death causation was often hindered by the lack of agreement on a placental classification scheme. The Amsterdam Consensus statement, published in 2016, focused attention on malperfusions in the maternal and fetal placental circulations.
Our purpose was to investigate the relationships of placental maternal vascular (MVM) and fetal vascular malperfusion (FVM) to fetal and neonatal death with a focus on the most important maternal clinical conditions in the pathway to fetal and neonatal death; maternal hypertension, antepartum haemorrhage and decreased fetal growth.
This was a prospective, observational cohort study conducted at two Asian sites. Data collected included clinical history, gross and histologic evaluation of the placenta, and a numbed risk of fetal and neonatal death in these pregnancies can be reduced by development of an intervention to reduce the likelihood of developing MVM and/or FVM in the first place.
Histological examination of the placenta, especially for malperfusion disorders, is crucial in elucidating pathways to fetal death and likely for neonatal death in preterm infants. Possibly more important is the potential to focus on placental MVM and FVM during pregnancy as a means to identify fetuses at risk and to reduce the risk of fetal death by early delivery. It is our additional hope that the increased risk of fetal and neonatal death in these pregnancies can be reduced by development of an intervention to reduce the likelihood of developing MVM and/or FVM in the first place.In the past, the reproductive freedom of African American women was hindered by forced reproduction and sterilization campaigns. Unfortunately, these involuntary practices have now mostly been replaced by inequality because of disproportionate tubal factor infertility rates within African American communities. Our work aimed to describe the inequities in increased rates of pelvic inflammatory disease and tubal factor infertility as it relates to African American women. In addition, we highlighted the need for improved access to screening and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, access to barrier contraception, and health literacy related to the understanding and prevention of tubal factor infertility in African American women.

The allotetraploid species Brassica juncea (mustard) is grown worldwide as oilseed and vegetable crops; the yellow seed-color trait is particularly important for oilseed crops. Here, to examine the factors affecting seed coat color, we performed a metabolic and transcriptomic analysis of yellow- and dark-seeded B. juncea seeds. In this study, we identified 236 compounds, including 31 phenolic acids, 47 flavonoids, 17 glucosinolates, 38 lipids, 69 other hydroxycinnamic acid compounds, and 34 novel unknown compounds. Of these, 36 compounds (especially epicatechin and its derivatives) accumulated significantly different levels during the development of yellow- and dark-seeded B. juncea. In addition, the transcript levels of BjuDFR, BjuANS,BjuBAN, BjuTT8, and BjuTT19 were closely associated with changes to epicatechin and its derivatives during seed development, implicating this pathway in the seed coat color determinant in B. juncea. Furthermore, we found numerous variations of sequences in the TT8A genes that may be associated with the stability of seed coat color in B. rapa, B. napus, and B. juncea, which might have undergone functional differentiation during polyploidization in the Brassica species. The results provide valuable information for understanding the accumulation of metabolites in the seed coat color of B. juncea and lay a foundation for exploring the underlying mechanism.Functional recovery after peripheral nerve injury (PNI) is poor, mainly due to the slow and incomplete regeneration of injured axons. Experimental therapies that increase the excitability of the injured axons have proven remarkably successful in promoting regeneration, but their clinical applicability has been limited. Bioluminescent optogenetics (BL-OG) uses luminopsins, fusion proteins of light-generating luciferase and light-sensing ion channels that could be used to increase neuronal excitability if exposed to a suitable substrate. Excitatory luminopsins were expressed in motoneurons of transgenic **** and in wildtype **** transduced with adeno-associated viral vectors. Intraperitoneal administration of coelenterazine (CTZ), a known luciferase substrate, generated intense bioluminescence in peripheral axons. This bioluminescence increased motoneuron excitability. A single administration of CTZ immediately after sciatic nerve transection and repair markedly enhanced motor axon regeneration. There is a challenge for the optimization of therapies since patients not only respond differently to current treatment options but also develop different side effects to the treatment. Genetic variability in the human genome can serve as a biomarker for the metabolism, availability of drugs and stratification of patients for suitable therapies. The goal of this systematic review is to assess the current evidence for the clinical translation of pharmacogenomics in the personalization of treatment for Parkinson's disease.
We performed a systematic search of Medline database for publications covering the topic of pharmacogenomics and genotype specific mutations in Parkinson's disease treatment, along with a manual search, and finally included a total of 116 publications in the review.
We analyzed 75 studies and 41 reviews published up to December of 2020. Most research is focused on levodopa pharmacogenomic properties and catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) enzymatic pathway polymorphisms, which have potential for clinical implementation due to changes in treatment response and side-effects.
The allotetraploid species Brassica juncea (mustard) is grown worldwide as oilseed and vegetable crops; the yellow seed-color trait is particularly important for oilseed crops. Here, to examine the factors affecting seed coat color, we performed a metabolic and transcriptomic analysis of yellow- and dark-seeded B. juncea seeds. In this study, we identified 236 compounds, including 31 phenolic acids, 47 flavonoids, 17 glucosinolates, 38 lipids, 69 other hydroxycinnamic acid compounds, and 34 novel unknown compounds. Of these, 36 compounds (especially epicatechin and its derivatives) accumulated significantly different levels during the development of yellow- and dark-seeded B. juncea. In addition, the transcript levels of BjuDFR, BjuANS,BjuBAN, BjuTT8, and BjuTT19 were closely associated with changes to epicatechin and its derivatives during seed development, implicating this pathway in the seed coat color determinant in B. juncea. Furthermore, we found numerous variations of sequences in the TT8A genes that may be associated with the stability of seed coat color in B. rapa, B. napus, and B. juncea, which might have undergone functional differentiation during polyploidization in the Brassica species. The results provide valuable information for understanding the accumulation of metabolites in the seed coat color of B. juncea and lay a foundation for exploring the underlying mechanism.Functional recovery after peripheral nerve injury (PNI) is poor, mainly due to the slow and incomplete regeneration of injured axons. A series of naphthoquinone-triazole hybrids was synthesized and evaluated in vitro against Leishmania (L.) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) strains. Their cytotoxicities were also evaluated, using the human embryonic kidney cell line (HEK-293). The hybrids were found to be non-toxic towards human cells and had demonstrated micromolar cellular antileishmanial and antimycobacterial potencies. Hybrid 13, i.e. 2-[1-(4-methylbenzyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl]methoxynaphthalene-1,4-dione was the most active of all. It was found with MIC90 0.5 µM potency against Mtb in a protein free medium, and with half-maxima inhibitory concentrations (IC50) of 0.81 µM and 1.48 µM against the infective promastigote parasites of L. donavani and L. major, respectively, with good selectivity towards these pathogens (SI 22 - 65). Comparatively, the clinical naphthoquinone, atovaquone, although less cytotoxic, was found to be two-fold less antimycobacterial potent, and six- to twelve-fold less active against leishmania. One of the fluorescent conjugates (compound 6) was demonstrated to be cell-permeable and low cytotoxic, preferentially accumulated in cancer cells, and display pronounced fluorescent signal. More importantly, 6 was identified to show specific BRD4 engagement in the cellular content. Collectively, this study provides a pathway for developing labeled BRD4 ligands and highlights that compound 6 may represent a valuable tool for explorative learning and target delivery study of BRD4.The consumption of sprouts has been steadily increasing due to their being an excellent source of nutrition. It is known that the bioactive constituents of legumes can be increased after germination. In this study, the extract from Senna tora sprouts is shown to exhibit improved radical scavenging activities and better neuroprotective effects in HT22 hippocampal neuronal (HT22) and R28 retina precursor (R28) cells than those from seeds due to an increased content of phenolic constituents, especially compounds 1 and 3-6. A phytochemical investigation of S. tora sprouts resulted in the isolation of two new naphthopyrone glycosides (1-2) with 27 previously reported compounds. Their structures were determined via interpreting spectroscopic data. Compounds 1 and 3-6 were found to possess radical scavenging activities and neuroprotective effects against oxidative stress in both neuronal cells. Hence, Senna tora sprouts and their constituents may be developed as natural neuroprotective agents via antioxidative effects.MiRNAs are emerging as key molecules to study neuropsychiatric diseases. However, despite the large number of methodologies and software for miRNA-seq analyses, there is little supporting literature for researchers in this area. This review focuses on evaluating how miRNA-seq has been used to study neuropsychiatric diseases to date, analyzing both the main findings discovered and the bioinformatics workflows and tools used from a methodological perspective. The objective of this review is two-fold first, to evaluate current miRNA-seq procedures used in neuropsychiatry; and second, to offer comprehensive information that can serve as a guide to new researchers in bioinformatics. After conducting a systematic search (from 2016 to June 30, 2020) of articles using miRNA-seq in neuropsychiatry, we have seen that it has already been used for different types of studies in three main categories diagnosis, prognosis, and mechanism. We carefully analyzed the bioinformatics workflows of each study, observing a high degree of variability with respect to the tools and methods used and several methodological complexities that are identified and discussed in this review.

However, there is a lack of suitable criteria and consistent terminology with which to define VR technology. A considerable number of studies have misclassified VR hardware (e.g. defining laptops as VR), hindering validity and research comparisons. This review addresses these limitations and establishes a standardized VR qualification framework. As a result of a comprehensive theoretical and literature review, the hardware-based VR qualification matrix is proposed. The matrix criteria consist of (1) three-dimensional (3D) synchronized sensory stimulation; (2) degrees of freedom tracking; and (3) visual suppression of physical stimuli. Previous work showed that a pulse of high glucose was required during the first 3 days of differentiation in vitro, but was not required after that. The specific glucose metabolism pathways required for adipocyte differentiation are unknown. Herein, we used 3T3-L1 adipocytes as a model system to study glucose metabolism and expansion of the adipocyte metabolome during the first 3 days of differentiation. Our primary outcome measures were GLUT4 and adiponectin, key proteins associated with healthy adipocytes. Using complete media with 0 or 5 mM glucose, we distinguished between developmental features that were dependent on the differentiation cocktail of dexamethasone, insulin, and isobutylmethylxanthine alone or the cocktail plus glucose. Cocktail alone was sufficient to activate the capacity for 2-deoxglucose uptake and glycolysis, but was unable to support the expression of GLUT4 and adiponectin in mature adipocytes. In contrast, 5 mM glucose in the media promoted a transient increase in glucose uptake and glycolysis as well as a significant expansion of the adipocyte metabolome and proteome. Using genetic and pharmacologic approaches, we found that the positive effects of 5 mM glucose on adipocyte differentiation were specifically due to increased expression of 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase 3 (PFKFB3), a key regulator of glycolysis and the ancillary glucose metabolic pathways. Our data reveal a critical role for PFKFB3 activity in regulating the cellular metabolic remodeling required for adipocyte differentiation and maturation.

The validity of the CAM
was examined using well-established measures of mentalizing ability and eToM in 45 young female patients with AN and 53 control participants. Next, the mediation model was assessed using a subsample of 33 AN patients and 34 controls, in which interpersonal mistrust was additionally assessed.
The CAM
correlated with the measures of mentalizing ability and eToM. The CAM
, along with the measure of general mentalizing, significantly differentiated between the AN and control groups. The associations of general mentalizing and CAM
with eating disorder (ED) symptoms were mediated by interpersonal mistrust.

Herein, we used 3T3-L1 adipocytes as a model system to study glucose metabolism and expansion of the adipocyte metabolome during the first 3 days of differentiation. Our primary outcome measures were GLUT4 and adiponectin, key proteins associated with healthy adipocytes. Using complete media with 0 or 5 mM glucose, we distinguished between developmental features that were dependent on the differentiation cocktail of dexamethasone, insulin, and isobutylmethylxanthine alone or the cocktail plus glucose. Cocktail alone was sufficient to activate the capacity for 2-deoxglucose uptake and glycolysis, but was unable to support the expression of GLUT4 and adiponectin in mature adipocytes. In contrast, 5 mM glucose in the media promoted a transient increase in glucose uptake and glycolysis as well as a significant expansion of the adipocyte metabolome and proteome. Using genetic and pharmacologic approaches, we found that the positive effects of 5 mM glucose on adipocyte differentiation were specifically due to increased expression of 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase 3 (PFKFB3), a key regulator of glycolysis and the ancillary glucose metabolic pathways. Our data reveal a critical role for PFKFB3 activity in regulating the cellular metabolic remodeling required for adipocyte differentiation and maturation. This study had two goals. The validity of the CAM was examined using well-established measures of mentalizing ability and eToM in 45 young female patients with AN and 53 control participants. Next, the mediation model was assessed using a subsample of 33 AN patients and 34 controls, in which interpersonal mistrust was additionally assessed. The CAM correlated with the measures of mentalizing ability and eToM. The CAM , along with the measure of general mentalizing, significantly differentiated between the AN and control groups. The associations of general mentalizing and CAM with eating disorder (ED) symptoms were mediated by interpersonal mistrust. The CAM is a valid measure of deficient eToM in AN. Indeed, four of these genes encoded toxins that are usually components of venom in cnidarian-specific cnidocytes. METHODS Patients with CD referred for ileocolonoscopy were prospectively included and distributed according to the degree of endoscopic inflammatory activity into remission, mild activity, and moderate to severe activity groups. The different degrees of endoscopic activity were correlated with the following indexes Crohn's disease activity index (CDAI), fCal, serum C-reactive protein (CRP), and haemogram. The control group comprised individuals without known intestinal disease who were referred for colorectal cancer screening. RESULTS Eighty colonoscopies were performed in patients with CD and 21 in the control group. The control group had a lower median fCal (59.7 mcg/g) than patients with CD (683 mcg/g, p less then 0.001). A moderate Spearman correlation occurred between SES-CD and CRP (r = 0.525), fCal (r = 0.450), and CDAI (r = 0.407), while a weak correlation was found with the platelet count (r = 0.257). Only fCal distinguished patients in remission from those with mild activity (236.6 mcg/g × 654.9 mcg/g, p = 0.014) or moderate to severe activity (236.6 mcg/g × 1128 mcg/g, p less then 0.001). An fCal cut-off of 155 mcg/g was sensitive (96%) and accurate (78%) for the diagnosis of endoscopic activity. RESULTS We identified 1273 articles and included 22 studies (14 for safety; 8 for effectiveness), comprising 1.4 million pregnant women in safety studies and 855,546 mother-infant-pairs in effectiveness studies. No significant differences between vaccinated and unvaccinated women and their in, there was no association with a higher frequency of clinically relevant sequelae. Vaccine effectiveness for prevention of infant pertussis, hospitalization and death is high. Pertussis vaccination during pregnancy has an overall positive benefit-risk ratio. Emergency measures in the face of the recent COVID-19 pandemic have been different among countries, although most have opted for confinement and restrictions on social contact. These measures have generated lifestyle changes with potential effects on individuals' health. The disturbances in daily routines due to confinement and remote work have impacted circadian rhythms and energy balance; however, the consequences of these disruptions have not been studied in depth. The objective was to evaluate the impact of 12-week confinement on body weight, considering changes in several external synchronizers of the biological clock.
The participants, 521 university students (16-35 years), responded to 52 questions oriented to determine light exposure, sleep patterns, sedentary lifestyle, and eating times.
We found a reduction in sunlight exposure and sleep duration, an increment in sedentarism and screen exposure, and a delay in the timing of the main meals and sleep in the whole cohort. These behavioral changes were associated with a twofold increase in obesity. Subjects who increased their sedentary hours and shortened their sleep to a higher degree were those who gained more bodyweight. The most influential factors in body weight variation during confinement were sleep duration, physical activity (sedentarism), and light (timing of screen exposure). The mediation model explained 6% of the total body weight variation.
Results support a significant impact of confinement on several external synchronizers of the biological clock and on body weight. Health-related recommendations during the pandemic must include behavioral recommendations to mitigate the adverse effects on the biological clock.

These processes are controlled by a fine-tuned chemical cross talk between the host and microbiota. Although the exact mechanisms behind this cross talk remains elusive, microbiota induced epigenetic mechanisms like DNA methylation and histone modifications may be key. This review presents our perspective on the epigenome as a mediator for host-microbiota cross talk, as well as methodology to study epigenetics, the role of dysbiosis in disease, and how the gut microbiome-host axis may be used in personal medicine.ECMO is an extracorporeal cardiorespiratory support system whose use has been increased in the last decade. In this open-label, 2-period crossover study, 24 healthy men were randomized to 1 of 2 treatment sequence groups administration of tegoprazan under the fasting condition and administration of tegoprazan under the fed condition. The dosing periods of both sequence groups were separated by a washout period of 7 days. At each dosing period, the participants received a single dose of 200 mg of tegoprazan followed by pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic analysis.

The dosing periods of both sequence groups were separated by a washout period of 7 days. After the oral administration of 200 mg tegoprazan, the C was decreased and delayed under the fed condition compared with that of the fasting condition. PC3, DU145, and LNCaP prostate cancer cell lines were used. The MTT assay was used to determine cell viability. Western blotting analysis was performed using anti-DRG2 antibodies. Cells were transfected with 50 nmol DRG2 siRNA using an siRNA transfection reagent for DRG2 knockdown. The cell cycle was analyzed by using flow cytometry, and apoptosis was detected by using the Annexin V cell death assay.

Upon DRG2 knockdown in prostate cancer cells, an increase in the sub-G1 phase was observed without a change in the G1 or G2/M phases. When 4 nM docetaxel was administered to DRG2 knockdown prostate cancer cell lines, an increase in the sub-G1 phase was observed without increasing the G2/M phase, which was similar to that in DU145 cells before DRG2 knockdown. To evaluate the characteristics of urinary stone composition in a Korean population using a large database of stone composition.
From January 1, 2014, to June 30, 2019, a total of 33,078 urinary stone composition data were analyzed. Stone composition was classified into four main groups calcium oxalate (CaOx), struvite, uric acid (UA), and calcium phosphate (CaP). We examined the relationship between stone composition and sex, age, geographic region, calendar month, and season.
The CaOx group (46.41%) was the largest, followed by the struvite group (29.66%), UA group (19.61%), and CaP group (4.32%). The CaOx group tended to decrease with age, but the UA group increased with age. Also, the CaOx group had the highest percentage in summer and the lowest in spring (p<0.001). The struvite and CaP groups had higher percentages of females than males (struvite 36.6% vs. 25.7%, p<0.001; CaP 6.2% vs. 3.3%, p<0.001). Conversely, the UA stones were more common in males than in females (24.5% vs. 11.0%, p<0.001). The UA group had the lowest percentage in the capital region (p<0.001). The total male-to-female ratio decreased over time from 1.951 in 2014 to 1.671 in 2018 (p<0.001).

This study aimed to develop a simple nomogram based on the Mayo Adhesive Probability (MAP) score combined with the RENAL nephrometry score (RNS) to predict intraoperative complications before partial nephrectomy (PN) in Asian populations.
This study retrospectively collected patients undergoing PN at three medical centers. Each component of the MAP score and the RNS (6 variables) was evaluated to assess its association with intraoperative complications by multivariable logistic regression with backward elimination.
A total of 46 cases (7.2%) with intraoperative complications were identified among 637 patients. After backward elimination, three variables, including tumor diameter (4-7 cm vs. ≤4 cm odds ratio [OR], 4.339; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.943-9,692; ≥7 cm vs. ≤4 cm OR, 8.434; 95% CI, 1.225-58.090), nearness to the collecting system (4-7 mm vs. ≥7 mm OR, 2.988; 95% CI, 1.293-6.907; ≤4 mm vs. ≥7 mm OR, 21.394; 95% CI, 6.122-74.756), and perirenal fat stranding type (type 1 vs. no stranding OR, 3.119; 95% CI, 1.079-9.017; type 2 vs. no stranding OR, 18.722; 95% CI, 6.757-51.868), were retained. The predictive power (measured by area under the curve [AUC]) of the nomogram was observed to be superior to the RNS or MAP score alone (RNS 0.686, MAP score 0.729, the nomogram 0.837), but comparable to their combination (0.813).

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a major complication of diabetes Mellitus. Early detection and intervention of DN can slow its progression and improve patients' outcomes. Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) as a marker of tubular damage might become a useful biomarker for the evaluation of renal involvement in diabetic patients. We aimed to evaluate the serum and urine NGAL(s-NGAL and u-NGAL) in type 2 diabetic patients and its correlation with different stages of diabetic nephropathy.
This cross-sectional study was designed on 198 subjects consisted of 50 controls and 148 type 2 diabetes patients (50 normoalbuminuric, 58 microalbuminuric, and 40 macroalbuminuric). The study was conducted with measuring s-NGAL and u-NGAL, albumin and spot urine creatinine were also measured.
A highly increased level of s-NGAL was detected in macroalbuminuric group compared with controls, normoalbuminurics and microalbuminurics (P < .01). Highly raised u-NGAL levels were observed in macroalbuminurics in comtical test for evaluation of diabetic renal involvement. We could suggest u-NGAL as a probable predictor of macroalbuminuria.

Patients with vitamin D deficiency had lower serum creatinine (P < .02), lower 24-hour urine calcium (P < .01), and lower 24-hour urine oxalate (P < .05).

Many factors, such as increased serum creatinine, increased blood pressure and abnormal urine protein, may lead to poor prognosis of IgA nephropathy (IgAN). The features of IgAN are also affected by uric acid, but its effect on the prognosis is less reported. We therefore systematically investigated the possible correlation of IgAN with hyperuricemia (HUA) and their prognosis.
Two groups (HUA group and uric acid normal group) were included of 178 IgAN patients. The indexes in the clinic and pathology were compared; logistic regression and renal survival were used to speculate the correlated factors of HUA in IgAN and their prognosis.
HUA group had higher serum urea nitrogen, serum creatinine, total cholesterol, 24-hour urinary protein quantity, percentage of CKD3⁃5, the thickness of arteriole, glomerular mesangial hyperplasia, tubular atrophy, glomerulosclerosis, interstitial fibrosis and the area of infiltration of inflammatory cells (ICI), lower eGFR and serum albumin-to-creatinine ratios (P < .05). Total cholesterol and ICI in X2 were independent related factors of HUA given by the analysis of logistic regression (P < .05). No correlation was found in HUA and normal group used by Kaplan- Meier (P > .05).

For this reason, the broad distribution of ACE2 receptors in different tissues plays a crucial role in the multi-organ dysfunction and fatality due to COVID-19. Because of the high prevalence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with COVID-19, we review the molecular understanding into viral infection mechanisms and implications for AKI. Furthermore, mechanisms of the AKI to chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression, such as the relative contribution of immune cell reaction, fibroblasts activation, endothelial dysfunction, and subsequent hypoxia may contribute to the association of AKI with worse outcomes during this virus pandemic. We therefore systematically investigated the possible correlation of IgAN with hyperuricemia (HUA) and their prognosis. Two groups (HUA group and uric acid normal group) were included of 178 IgAN patients. The indexes in the clinic and pathology were compared; logistic regression and renal survival were used to speculate the correlated factors of HUA in IgAN and their prognosis. HUA group had higher serum urea nitrogen, serum creatinine, total cholesterol, 24-hour urinary protein quantity, percentage of CKD3⁃5, the thickness of arteriole, glomerular mesangial hyperplasia, tubular atrophy, glomerulosclerosis, interstitial fibrosis and the area of infiltration of inflammatory cells (ICI), lower eGFR and serum albumin-to-creatinine ratios (P < .05). Total cholesterol and ICI in X2 were independent related factors of HUA given by the analysis of logistic regression (P < .05). No correlation was found in HUA and normal group used by Kaplan- Meier (P > .05). Severer renal pathological injures (glomeruli, tubules or interstitium) were found in IgAN. Besides, total cholesterol and the area of infiltration of inflammatory cells were independent related factors of hyperuricemia in IgAN. The wide variety of affected organs is likely based upon the shared expression of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) important entry-receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). For this reason, the broad distribution of ACE2 receptors in different tissues plays a crucial role in the multi-organ dysfunction and fatality due to COVID-19. Because of the high prevalence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with COVID-19, we review the molecular understanding into viral infection mechanisms and implications for AKI. Furthermore, mechanisms of the AKI to chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression, such as the relative contribution of immune cell reaction, fibroblasts activation, endothelial dysfunction, and subsequent hypoxia may contribute to the association of AKI with worse outcomes during this virus pandemic.
