  • Objective To explore variables predicting which individuals return for repeat cochlear implantation (CI) evaluation after initially not qualifying. Study design Retrospective chart review. The experimental group received psychotherapy along with medical care in individual face-to-facesessions, 1 h per day for 6 consecutive days.The control group received medical care for PTL. Results Consumption of iron-fortified formula in infancy was associated with poorer performance on neurocognitive tests in childhood, and these effects related to poorer neurocognitive, emotional, and educational outcomes in young adulthood. Dosage effects associated with consumption of iron-fortified formula were found for lower educational attainment and, marginally, slower mental processing. Those who received iron-fortified formula and had low age 10 cognitive abilities performed most poorly on neurocognitive tests at age 21. Despite these gains, important elements of the initial neuropsychiatric assessment of functional movement disorders (FND-movt) and functional limb weakness/paresis (FND-par) have yet to be established. This is an important gap from both diagnostic and treatment planning perspectives. In this article, the authors performed a narrative review to characterize clinically relevant variables across FND-movt and FND-par cohorts, including time course and symptom evolution, precipitating factors, medical and family histories, psychiatric comorbidities, psychosocial factors, physical examination signs, and adjunctive diagnostic tests. Thereafter, the authors propose a preliminary set of clinical content that should be assessed during early-phase patient encounters, in addition to identifying physical signs informing diagnosis and potential use of adjunctive tests for challenging cases.     A prospective cohort study using 2years of historical controls within a freestanding, academic children's hospital. Patients undergoing benchmark cardiac surgery between May 4, 2014, and August 15, 2016 (preintervention) and September 6, 2016, to September 30, 2018 (postintervention) were included. The intervention consisted of displaying at the point of care targets for the timing of extubation, transfer from the intensive care unit (ICU), and hospital discharge. Family satisfaction, reintubation, and readmission rates were tracked.

    The postintervention cohort consisted of 219 consecutive patients. There was a reduction in variation for ICU (difference in SD -2.56, P<.01) and total LOS (difference in SD -2.84, P<.001). Patients stayed on average 0.97 fewer days (P<.001) in the ICU (median -1.01 [IQR -2.15, -0.39]), 0.7 fewer days (P<.001) on mechanical ventilation (median -0.54 [IQR -0.77, -0.50]), and 1.18 fewer days (P<.001) for the total LOS (median -2.25 [IQR -3.69, -0.15]).     No study elucidated the role of fasting blood glucose (FBG) level in the prognosis
of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

    This cohort study was conducted in a single center at Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University, Wuhan, China. Clinical laboratory, and treatment data of inpatients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 were collected and analyzed. Outcomes of patients with and without pre-existing diabetes were compared. The associations of diabetes history and/or FBG levels with mortality were analyzed. Multivariate cox regression analysis on the risk factors associated with mortality in patients with COVID-19 was performed.

    A total of 941 hospitalized patients with COVID-19 were enrolled in the study. There was a positive relationship between pre-existing diabetes and the mortality of patients who developed COVID-19 (21 of 123 [17.1%] vs 76 of 818 [9.3%]; P=0.012). FBG≥7.0mmol/L was an independent risk factor for the mortality of COVID-19 regardless of the presence or not of a history of diabetes (hazard ratio, 2.20 [95% CI, 1.21-4.03]; P=0.010).

The newly introduced sodium glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors and the glucagon like peptide-1 receptor agonists have shown benefit that is independent of glycaemic control and a minimal risk of hypoglycaemia. However, guidelines still express caution about its use in frail older people due to fear of other side effects such as weight loss, hypotension and falls. Some frail older people will miss out on the benefits of this new therapy if frailty is considered as a one entity with a blanket application of guidelines. We propose that frailty should be viewed as two distinct metabolically different phenotypes, the sarcopenic-obese, in which new therapy will improve their metabolic profile and should be liberally used if no contraindications, and the anorexic-malnourished phenotype in which the new therapy should be cautiously considered. In other words, glycaemic targets should be driven by individual's overall function but the use of new therapy should be driven by frailty phenotype.

Glucose status at GDM diagnosis was categorized into i) International Association for Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Group (IADPSG) T2DM (fasting glucose≥7mmol/L and/or 2hr-glucose≥11.1mmol/L) or ii) modified National Institute for Care Excellence (NICE) GDM (fasting glucose≥5.6mmol/L-6.9mmol/L and/or 2hr-glucose≥7.8mmol/L-11mmol/L) and compared with postpartum OGTT.

    IADPSG T2DM and NICE GDM was present in 35% (n=64) and 65% (n=117) of the 181 women who completed the 8±2weeks postpartum evaluation respectively.   • COVID-19 characterized by refractory hypoxemia increases patient mortality because of immunosuppression effects. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of immunomodulatory with thymosin α1 for critical COVID-19 patients.

    This multicenter retrospective cohort study was performed in 8 government-designated treatment centers for COVID-19 patients in China from Dec. 2019 to Mar. 2020. Thymosin α1 was administrated with 1.6mg qd or q12 h for >5days. The primary outcomes were the 28-day and 60-day mortality, the secondary outcomes were hospital length of stay and the total duration of the disease. Subgroup analysis was carried out according to clinical classification.

    Of the 334 enrolled COVID-19 patients, 42 (12.6%) died within 28days, and 55 (16.5%) died within 60days of hospitalization. There was a significant difference in the 28-day mortality between the thymosin α1 and non-thymosin α1-treated groups in adjusted model (P=0.016), without obvious differences in the 60-day mortality and survival time in the overall cohort (P>0.05). This research focused on the function of microRNA-16 (miR-16) in LN development. Fcgamma receptor II-b-deficient (Fcgr2b-/-) **** with the natural potential to develop SLE- and LN-like diseases were used. Gain- and loss-of-function studies were performed to explore the function of miR-16 in pathological symptoms in mouse kidney tissues and the proliferation of mesangial cells (SV40 MES-13). The putative downstream molecules of miR-16 were explored. Consequently, poor expression of miR-16 was found in kidney tissues. Upregulation of miR-16 inhibited tissue hyperplasia, inflammatory infiltration, glomerular injury and fibrosis but increased cell apoptosis in mouse kidney tissues, and it inhibited proliferation but promoted apoptosis of MES-13 cells as well. miR-16 directly bound to DEC2 and inactivated the TLR4 signaling. DEC2 blocked the protective roles of miR-16 in MES-13 cells. The enhanced proliferation in MES-13 cells following miR-16 inhibition was reversed by chloroquine phosphate, a TLR4 antagonist.     COVID-19 characterized by refractory hypoxemia increases patient mortality because of immunosuppression effects. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of immunomodulatory with thymosin α1 for critical COVID-19 patients. This multicenter retrospective cohort study was performed in 8 government-designated treatment centers for COVID-19 patients in China from Dec. 2019 to Mar. 2020. Thymosin α1 was administrated with 1.6mg qd or q12 h for >5days. The primary outcomes were the 28-day and 60-day mortality, the secondary outcomes were hospital length of stay and the total duration of the disease. Subgroup analysis was carried out according to clinical classification. Of the 334 enrolled COVID-19 patients, 42 (12.6%) died within 28days, and 55 (16.5%) died within 60days of hospitalization. There was a significant difference in the 28-day mortality between the thymosin α1 and non-thymosin α1-treated groups in adjusted model (P=0.016), without obvious differences in the 60-day mortality and survival time in the overall cohort (P>0.05). In the subgroup analysis, it was found that thymosin α1 therapy significantly reduced 28-day mortality (Hazards Ratios HR, 0.11, 95% confidence interval CI 0.02-0.63, P=0.013) via improvement of Pa0 /FiO (P=0.036) and prolonged the hospital length of stay (P=0.024) as well as the total duration of the disease (P=0.001) in the critical type patients, especially those aged over 64years, with white blood cell>6.8×10 /L, neutrophil>5.3×10 /L, lymphocyte<0.73×10 /L, PaO /FiO <196, SOFA>3, and acute physiology and chronic health evaluation (APACHE) II>7. This research focused on the function of microRNA-16 (miR-16) in LN development. Fcgamma receptor II-b-deficient (Fcgr2b-/-) mice with the natural potential to develop SLE- and LN-like diseases were used. Gain- and loss-of-function studies were performed to explore the function of miR-16 in pathological symptoms in mouse kidney tissues and the proliferation of mesangial cells (SV40 MES-13). The putative downstream molecules of miR-16 were explored. Consequently, poor expression of miR-16 was found in kidney tissues. Upregulation of miR-16 inhibited tissue hyperplasia, inflammatory infiltration, glomerular injury and fibrosis but increased cell apoptosis in mouse kidney tissues, and it inhibited proliferation but promoted apoptosis of MES-13 cells as well. miR-16 directly bound to DEC2 and inactivated the TLR4 signaling. DEC2 blocked the protective roles of miR-16 in MES-13 cells. The enhanced proliferation in MES-13 cells following miR-16 inhibition was reversed by chloroquine phosphate, a TLR4 antagonist.     We aimed to develop a gene expression-based prognostic signature for isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) wild-type glioblastoma using clinical trial datasets representative of glioblastoma clinical trial populations.

    Samples were collected from newly diagnosed patients with IDH wild-type glioblastoma in the ARTE, TAMIGA, EORTC 26101 (referred to as "ATE"), AVAglio, and GLARIUS trials, or treated at UCLA. Transcriptional profiling was achieved with the NanoString gene expression platform. To identify genes prognostic for overall survival (OS), we built an elastic net penalized Cox proportional hazards regression model using the discovery ATE dataset. For validation in independent datasets (AVAglio, GLARIUS, UCLA), we combined elastic net-selected genes into a robust z-score signature (ATE score) to overcome gene expression platform differences between discovery and validation cohorts.

    NanoString data were available from 512 patients in the ATE dataset. Elastic net identified a prognostic signature of 9 genes (CHEK1, GPR17, IGF2BP3, MGMT, MTHFD1L, PTRH2, SOX11, S100A9, and TFRC). Translating weighted elastic net scores to the ATE score conserved the prognostic value of the genes. The ATE score was prognostic for OS in the ATE dataset (P < 0.0001), as expected, and in the validation cohorts (AVAglio, P < 0.0001; GLARIUS, P = 0.02; UCLA, P = 0.004).     We assessed a measles vaccination campaign's potential short-term adverse events.

    In a cluster-randomized trial assessing a measles vaccination campaign's effect on all-cause mortality and hospital admission among children aged 9-59 months in Guinea-Bissau, children received a measles vaccination (intervention) or a health check-up (control). One month to 2 months later, we visited a subgroup of children to ask mothers/guardians about outpatient consultations since enrollment. In log-binomial models, we estimated the relative risk (RR) of nonaccidental outpatient consultations.

    Among 8319 children (4437 intervention/3882 control), 652 nonaccidental outpatient consultations occurred (322 intervention/330 control). The measles vaccination campaign tended to reduce nonaccidental outpatient consultations by 16% (RR, 0.84 [95% confidence interval CI, .65-1.11]), especially if caused by respiratory symptoms (RR, 0.68 [95% CI, .42-1.11]). The reduction tended to be larger in children who prior to trial enrollment had a pentavalent vaccination (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hepatitis B, and Haemophilus influenzae type b) as the most recent vaccination (RR, 0.61 [95% CI, .42-.89]) than in children who prior to trial enrollment had a routine measles vaccination as the most recent vaccination (RR, 0.93 [95% CI, .68-1.26]) (P = .04 for interaction).

    Prior observational studies have suggested that fluoroquinolone use may be associated with more than 2-fold increased risk of aortic aneurysm or aortic dissection (AA/AD). These studies, however, did not fully consider the role of coexisting infections and the risk of fluoroquinolones relative to other antibiotics.

    To estimate the risk of AA/AD associated with infections and to assess the comparative risk of AA/AD associated with fluoroquinolones vs other antibiotics with similar indication profiles among patients with the same types of infections.

    This nested case-control study identified 21 651 176 adult patients from a nationwide population-based health insurance claims database from January 1, 2009, to November 30, 2015. Each incident case of AA/AD was matched with 10 control individuals by age, sex, and follow-up duration in the database using risk-set sampling. Analysis of the data was conducted from April 2019 to March 2020.

  • Introduction Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has a significant disease burden and is among the leading causes of hospital readmissions, adding a significant burden on healthcare resources. The association between 30-day readmission in a COPD patient undergoing bronchoscopy and a wide range of modifiable potential risk factors, after adjusting for sociodemographic and clinical factors, has been assessed, and comparison has been made with COPD patients not undergoing bronchoscopy. Methods We conducted a comprehensive analysis of the 2016 Nationwide Readmission Database (NRD) of 30-day all-cause readmission among COPD patients undergoing bronchoscopy. A Cox's proportional hazards model was used to obtain independent relative risks of readmission following bronchoscopy in COPD patients as compared to patients not undergoing bronchoscopy. Our primary outcome was the 30-day all-cause readmission rate in both groups. Other secondary outcomes of interest were the 10 most common reasons for readmission, rd patients, and the rationale should be clarified, as it affects the overall LOS and healthcare expenditure.Cardiac manifestations of coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19), including arrhythmia, have been described in the literature. However, to our knowledge, association of COVID-19 with bradycardia has not been reported. This case study describes sinus bradycardia as a potential manifestation of COVID-19. This is a retrospective case series of four patients with laboratory-confirmed severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, admitted to St. Luke's University Health Network ICU between 24 March 2020 and 5 April 2020. Medical records of these patients were reviewed using the EPIC electronic health record system. Demographic, clinical, laboratory, and treatment data were reviewed against periods of bradycardia in each patient. The patient group comprised two males and two females. Two patients had pre-existing cardiovascular (CV) comorbidities but no history of arrythmias. Heart rates ranged between 66 and 88 beats/min on admission. The lowest rates during bradycardia were between 42 and 49 ed response to medications are possible triggers. High levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines may act directly on the sinoatrial (SA) node contributing to the development of bradycardia. This may be a warning sign of the onset of a serious cytokine storm. An increased awareness of possible exaggerated bradycardia response is important to consider with the use of empiric medications which have arrhythmogenic effects.Acute adrenal hemorrhage (adrenal apoplexy) in the context of severe sepsis is potentially life-threatening. Diagnosis of this condition is difficult to achieve without a strong sense of suspicion. The concurrent use of anticoagulants increases the risk of adrenal hemorrhage in the context of sepsis. Abdominal CT imaging is helpful in detecting hemorrhage within the adrenal gland. Once the diagnosis is considered, prompt therapy with corticosteroids can improve recovery and survival. A follow-up scan to confirm the resolution of the hematoma is useful to ensure that there is no other cause of adrenal enlargement. The secondary objectives included assessing the effects of dapagliflozin on weight reduction and blood pressure control and to determining its safety. Methodology Patients with type 2 diabetes who were treated with dapagliflozin were identified by screening the electronic medical records at tertiary care hospitals in Islamabad. Data were collected at the first visit and at follow-up. Categorical variables were recorded as frequencies and percentages and compared by McNemar's tests, and continuous variables were recorded as means and standard deviations and compared by paired sample t-tests. Results Mean HbA1C concentration was significantly lower at follow-up than at the first visit (7.57%±0.98% vs. 9.07%±2.07%, respectively; p less then 0.001). Bodyweight (85.09±15.92 kg vs. 87.07±16.11 kg, respectively; p less then 0.001) and diastolic blood pressure (80.34±7.12 mmHg vs. 82.34±9.61 mmHg, respectively; p less then 0.001) were also significantly lower at follow-up than at the first visit, whereas systolic pressure showed a marginally significant reduction (123.5±16.57 mmHg vs. 126.83±19.97 mmHg, p=0.048). The residents were given a post-session survey to determine their attitudes and learning towards this virtual conference approach. Results Based on the post-session survey, the majority of the residents found this activity to be educational, entertaining, engaging, and better than the traditional lecture format. Conclusion This initial attempt at migrating gamification, a core component of our live conferences, into the new virtual arena, was well-received by learners as effective, educational, and engaging.
    Introduction Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has a significant disease burden and is among the leading causes of hospital readmissions, adding a significant burden on healthcare resources. The association between 30-day readmission in a COPD patient undergoing bronchoscopy and a wide range of modifiable potential risk factors, after adjusting for sociodemographic and clinical factors, has been assessed, and comparison has been made with COPD patients not undergoing bronchoscopy. Methods We conducted a comprehensive analysis of the 2016 Nationwide Readmission Database (NRD) of 30-day all-cause readmission among COPD patients undergoing bronchoscopy. A Cox's proportional hazards model was used to obtain independent relative risks of readmission following bronchoscopy in COPD patients as compared to patients not undergoing bronchoscopy. Our primary outcome was the 30-day all-cause readmission rate in both groups. Demographic, clinical, laboratory, and treatment data were reviewed against periods of bradycardia in each patient. The patient group comprised two males and two females. Two patients had pre-existing cardiovascular (CV) comorbidities but no history of arrythmias. Heart rates ranged between 66 and 88 beats/min on admission.   • The linker of the nucleoskeleton and cytoskeleton (LINC) complex is composed of two transmembrane proteins the KASH domain protein localized to the outer nuclear membrane and the SUN domain protein to the inner nuclear membrane. In budding yeast, the sole SUN domain protein, Mps3, is thought to pair with either Csm4 or Mps2, two KASH-like proteins, to form two separate LINC complexes. Here, we show that Mps2 mediates the interaction between Csm4 and Mps3 to form a heterotrimeric telomere-associated LINC (t-LINC) complex in budding yeast meiosis. Mps2 binds to Csm4 and Mps3, and all three are localized to the telomere. Telomeric localization of Csm4 depends on both Mps2 and Mps3; in contrast, Mps2's localization depends on Mps3 but not Csm4. Mps2-mediated t-LINC complex regulates telomere movement and meiotic recombination. By ectopically expressing CSM4 in vegetative yeast cells, we reconstitute the heterotrimeric t-LINC complex and demonstrate its ability to tether telomeres. Our findings therefore reveal the heterotrimeric composition of the t-LINC complex in budding yeast and have implications for understanding variant LINC complex formation.Histone methyltransferase NSD3 is frequently dysregulated in human cancers, yet the epigenetic role of NSD3 during cancer development remains elusive. Here we report that NSD3-induced methylation of H3K36 is crucial for breast tumor initiation and metastasis. In vivo, NSD3 promoted malignant transformation of mammary epithelial cells, a function comparable to that of HRAS. Furthermore, NSD3 expanded breast cancer-initiating cells and promoted epithelial-mesenchymal transition to trigger tumor invasion and metastasis. Mechanistically, the long isoform (full-length transcript) of NSD3, but not its shorter isoform lacking a catalytic domain, cooperated with EZH2 and RNA polymerase II to stimulate H3K36me2/3-dependent transactivation of genes associated with NOTCH receptor cleavage, leading to nuclear accumulation of NICD and NICD-mediated transcriptional repression of E-cadherin. Over-expression of B7-H3 is associated with disease severity, risk of recurrence and reduced survival. In this article, we report the preclinical development of MGC018, an antibody-drug conjugate targeted against B7-H3. MGC018 is comprised of the cleavable linker-duocarmycin payload, valine-citrulline-seco duocarmycin hydroxybenzamide azaindole (vc-seco-DUBA), conjugated to an anti-B7-H3 humanized IgG1/kappa monoclonal antibody through reduced interchain disulfides, with an average drug-to-antibody ratio of ~2.7. MGC018 exhibited cytotoxicity toward B7-H3-positive human tumor cell lines, and exhibited bystander killing of target-negative tumor cells when co-cultured with B7-H3-positive tumor cells. MGC018 displayed potent antitumor activity in preclinical tumor models of breast, prostate and lung cancer, as well as melanoma. Additionally, antitumor activity was observed toward patient-derived xenograft models of breast, prostate and head and neck cancer displaying heterogeneous expression of B7-H3. Importantly, MGC018 exhibited a favorable pharmacokinetic and safety profile in cynomolgus monkeys following repeat-dose administration. The antitumor activity observed preclinically with MGC018, together with the positive safety profile, provides evidence of a potentially favorable therapeutic index and supports the continued development of MGC018 for the treatment of solid cancers.
    Screening for social determinants of health in the inpatient setting is uncommon. However, social risk factors documented in billing and electronic medical record data are associated with increased pediatric care use. We sought to describe (1) the epidemiology of social risks and referral acceptance and (2) association between social risks identified through routine inpatient screening and care use.

    Parents of children ages 0 to 18 admitted to a general pediatric floor at an academic children's hospital completed a psychosocial screening survey from October 2017 to June 2019. The survey covered the following domains finances, housing, food security, medications, and benefits. Patient characteristics and care use outcomes were abstracted from the electronic medical record and compared by using Pearson's χ
    or the Wilcoxon rank test and logistic regression analyses.

Here we report that NSD3-induced methylation of H3K36 is crucial for breast tumor initiation and metastasis. In patients with breast cancer, elevated expression of NSD3 was associated with recurrence, distant metastasis, and poor survival. In vivo, NSD3 promoted malignant transformation of mammary epithelial cells, a function comparable to that of HRAS. Furthermore, NSD3 expanded breast cancer-initiating cells and promoted epithelial-mesenchymal transition to trigger tumor invasion and metastasis. Mechanistically, the long isoform (full-length transcript) of NSD3, but not its shorter isoform lacking a catalytic domain, cooperated with EZH2 and RNA polymerase II to stimulate H3K36me2/3-dependent transactivation of genes associated with NOTCH receptor cleavage, leading to nuclear accumulation of NICD and NICD-mediated transcriptional repression of E-cadherin. Furthermore, mice harboring primary and metastatic breast tumors with overexpressed NSD3 showed sensitivity to NOTCH inhibition. Together, our findings uncover the critical epigenetic role of NSD3 in the modulation of NOTCH-dependent breast tumor progression, providing a rationale for targeting the NSD3-NOTCH signaling regulatory axis in aggressive breast cancer. In this article, we report the preclinical development of MGC018, an antibody-drug conjugate targeted against B7-H3. MGC018 is comprised of the cleavable linker-duocarmycin payload, valine-citrulline-seco duocarmycin hydroxybenzamide azaindole (vc-seco-DUBA), conjugated to an anti-B7-H3 humanized IgG1/kappa monoclonal antibody through reduced interchain disulfides, with an average drug-to-antibody ratio of ~2.7. MGC018 exhibited cytotoxicity toward B7-H3-positive human tumor cell lines, and exhibited bystander killing of target-negative tumor cells when co-cultured with B7-H3-positive tumor cells. MGC018 displayed potent antitumor activity in preclinical tumor models of breast, prostate and lung cancer, as well as melanoma. Additionally, antitumor activity was observed toward patient-derived xenograft models of breast, prostate and head and neck cancer displaying heterogeneous expression of B7-H3. Importantly, MGC018 exhibited a favorable pharmacokinetic and safety profile in cynomolgus monkeys following repeat-dose administration. However, social risk factors documented in billing and electronic medical record data are associated with increased pediatric care use. We sought to describe (1) the epidemiology of social risks and referral acceptance and (2) association between social risks identified through routine inpatient screening and care use. Parents of children ages 0 to 18 admitted to a general pediatric floor at an academic children's hospital completed a psychosocial screening survey from October 2017 to June 2019. The survey covered the following domains finances, housing, food security, medications, and benefits. Patient characteristics and care use outcomes were abstracted from the electronic medical record and compared by using Pearson's χ or the Wilcoxon rank test and logistic regression analyses. Of 374 screened families, 141 (38%) had a positive screen result, of whom 78 (55%) reported >1 need and 64 (45%) accepted a community resource. In bivariate analyses, patients with a positive screen result had higher 30-day readmission (10% vs 5%; = .05), lower median household income ($62 321 vs $71 460; < .01), lower parental education ( < .01), public insurance (57% vs 43%; < .01), lived in a 1-parent household (30 vs 12%; < .01), and had a complex chronic condition (35% vs 23%; = .01) compared with those with a negative screen result. My discussion corroborates the sparse technical literature on Burtt (Moriarty 1994; Villemaire, 2002), positioning his work in the aftermath of American idealism and the rise of realist, pragmatist and naturalist alternatives. However, I depart from the existing interpretations both in content and focus. Disagreeing with Moriarty, I maintain that Burtt's Metaphysical Foundations is not an idealist work. Moreover, I provide an alternative to Villemaire's mainly Deweyite/pragmatist reading, emphasizing the import of new realism and naturalism. Burtt's historical thesis should not be viewed as outlining a systematic philosophical position, but rather as a (coherent) culmination of numerous philosophical problematics. To support my conclusion, I provide a substantial summary of Burtt's text alongside a contextual analysis of the philosophical issues that preoccupied his teachers and peers in Columbia's philosophy department. I conclude with a historiographical section, rendering explicit the connections between Burtt's understanding of the scientific revolution, and his distinctive early 20th century American intellectual context.We define attention by three basic functions. Although public medical schools are less expensive than private medical schools, tuition fees are charged at public medical schools in the majority of countries. In Brazil, public medical schools, with the exception of municipal schools, are free. There has been little investigation of any differences in conditions offered by paid or free medical schools or what occurs in public and private clerkships in Brazil. We investigated the clerkship conditions offered to the students in both public and private Brazilian medical schools by gathering the opinions of clerkship coordinators and others responsible for clerkships.

    A cross-sectional, descriptive, analytical study using an electronic questionnaire was answered by clerkship coordinators to compare the clerkships of 30 public and 38 private Brazilian medical schools from all regions of the country. The questionnaires covered various aspects of the clinical environments, student supervision, facudy comparing Brazilian medical clerkships in private and public medical schools and provides a general vision of these programmes. It is necessary to further investigate clerkship development in the Brazilian medical school system and to study the differences between private and public medical schools globally.
    Myoglobin is an oxygen binding protein and its dysfunction has been associated with the pathology of several human disorders. This study was undertaken to investigation the role of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in the formation of met-myoglobin and the protective potential of four different reductants such as uric acid, folic acid, glutathione and ascorbic acid were also tested against met-myoglobin formation.

    Human myoglobin was treated with H2O2 in-vitro in order to prepare met-myoglobin. The generation of metmyoglobin was confirmed by UV-visible spectroscopy and its stability was analysed by the treatment of human myoglobin with H2O2 at varying pH or time. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to determine the oxidatively modified heme products in met-myoglobin. Spectroscopic analysis was used to identify the protective potential of uric acid, folic acid, glutathione and ascorbic acid against the formation of met-myoglobin.

Yet most choice problems are ultimately resolved with one of just two types of solutions mixed or extreme. For example, people adopt mixed solutions for resolving trade-offs when they allow exercising to license indulgence afterward (balancing between goals), read different literary genres (variety seeking), and order medium-sized coffees (the compromise effect). By contrast, when people adopt extreme solutions for resolving these exact same trade-offs, they exhibit highlighting, consistency seeking, and compromise avoidance, respectively. Our review of the choice literature first illustrates how many seemingly unrelated phenomena actually share the same underlying psychology. We then identify variables that promote one solution versus the other. These variables, in turn, systematically influence which of opposite choice effects arise (e.g., highlighting versus balancing).

We review the many experiences that have been shown to enhance meaning in life and close by considering important remaining research questions about this fascinating topic.Behavior genetics studies how genetic differences among people contribute to differences in their psychology and behavior. Here, I describe how the conclusions and methods of behavior genetics have evolved in the postgenomic era in which the human genome can be directly measured. First, I revisit the first law of behavioral genetics stating that everything is heritable, and I describe results from large-scale meta-analyses of twin data and new methods for estimating heritability using measured DNA. Second, I describe new methods in statistical genetics, including genome-wide association studies and polygenic score analyses. Third, I describe the next generation of work on gene × environment interaction, with a particular focus on how genetic influences vary across sociopolitical contexts and exogenous environments. Genomic technology has ushered in a golden age of new tools to address enduring questions about how genes and environments combine to create unique human lives.Research in psychology has shown that even routinely experienced everyday objects such as brands can trigger cognitively engaging, emotional, and socially meaningful experiences. In this article, we review three key areas where current advances reside brands as passive objects with utilitarian and symbolic meanings, brands as relationship partners and regulators of personal relationships, and brands as creators of social identity with social group linking value. Research in these areas is grounded in a number of fundamental perspectives within cognitive, emotional, motivational, personality, interpersonal, and group psychology. We conclude by addressing emerging areas for research.To explain trade-offs in choice, researchers have proposed myriad phenomena and decision rules, each paired with separate theories and idiosyncratic vocabularies. Yet most choice problems are ultimately resolved with one of just two types of solutions mixed or extreme. For example, people adopt mixed solutions for resolving trade-offs when they allow exercising to license indulgence afterward (balancing between goals), read different literary genres (variety seeking), and order medium-sized coffees (the compromise effect). By contrast, when people adopt extreme solutions for resolving these exact same trade-offs, they exhibit highlighting, consistency seeking, and compromise avoidance, respectively. Our review of the choice literature first illustrates how many seemingly unrelated phenomena actually share the same underlying psychology. We then identify variables that promote one solution versus the other. These variables, in turn, systematically influence which of opposite choice effects arise (e.g., highlighting versus balancing).
