Pharmacogenomics provides a possible intervention to address adherence. We hypothesized that pharmacogenomic-informed care could increase adherence. Patients in a prospective case-control study underwent preemptive pharmacogenomic genotyping with results available for provider use at the point-of-care; controls (not genotyped) were treated by the same providers. Over 6,000 e-prescriptions for 39 medications with actionable pharmacogenomic information were analyzed. Composite adherence, measured by modified proportion of days covered (mPDC), was compared between cases/controls and genomically-concordant vs genomically-higher-risk medications. Overall, 536 patients were included. No difference in mean mPDC was observed due to availability of pharmacogenomic guidance. However, case patients prescribed high-risk pharmacogenomic medications were more than twice as likely to have low mPDC for these medications compared to genomically-concordant prescriptions (odds ratio=2.4 (1.03-5.74), p less then 0.05). All rights reserved.Assessments of clinical evidence vary between regulators and health technology assessment bodies, but precise differences remain unclear. To compare uncertainties raised on the clinical evidence of approved drugs, we analyzed assessments of regulators and health technology assessment (HTA) bodies in the US and Europe. We found that US and European regulators report uncertainties related to safety for almost all drugs (85-94%) whereas HTA bodies reported these less (53-59%). By contrast, HTA bodies raised uncertainties related to effects against relevant comparators for almost all drugs (88-100%) while this was infrequently addressed by regulators (12-32%). Regulators as well as HTA bodies reported uncertainties related to the patient population for 60-95% of drugs. The patterns of regulator-HTA misalignment were comparable between the US and Europe. Our results indicate that increased coordination between these complementary organizations is necessary to facilitate the collection of necessary evidence in an efficient and timely manner. First, global dimensions may not exist locally. Second, the degree to which traits and trait spectra constitute independent dimensions of functional variation at various scales continues to be refined. Finally, traits may be associated with existing categorical groupings. METHODS We assessed trait integration and differentiation across 57 forest understory plant species in Douglas-fir forests of western Oregon, United States. We combined measurements for a range of traits with literature-based estimates of seed mass and species groupings. We used network analysis and nonmetric multidimensional scaling ordination (NMS) to determine the degree of integration. RESULTS We observed a strong leaf economics spectrum (LES) integrated with stem but not root traits. However, stem traits and intrinsic water-use efficiency integrated LES and root traits. Network analyses indicated a modest grouping of a priori trait dimensions. NMS indicated that multivariate differences among species were related primarily to (1) rooting depth and plant height vs. specific root length, (2) the LES, and (3) leaf size vs. seed mass. These differences were related to species groupings associated with growth and life form, leaf lifespan and seed dispersal mechanisms. CONCLUSIONS The strategies of coexisting understory plant species could not be reduced to a single dimension. Yet, species can be characterized efficiently and effectively for trait-based studies of plant communities by measuring four common traits plant height, specific leaf area, leaf size, and seed mass. © 2020 Botanical Society of America.

7% of teachers responded that they do not recommend mouthguards for children during sporting activities. Nearly 80.6% teachers were aware of the possibility of reimplanting an avulsed tooth. About 72.8% teachers had poor knowledge of immediate action necessary for successful outcomes of reimplanted teeth. Conclusions Orofacial trauma was commonly encountered by sports teachers among children during sporting activities in the school. There was poor awareness regarding types of mouth guards and its significance among the sports school teachers. The knowledge related to the management of emergency oral injuries was inadequate.Aim To present the anatomical and visual outcome and compare different techniques in the surgical treatment of proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) in Nigerians. Method Comparative retrospective review of PVR grade C and D eyes that had vitreoretinal surgery with silicone oil between April 2005 and December 2012. Data was extracted from consecutive case notes after exclusion of eyes with PVR associated with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), proliferative sickle cell retinopathy (PSCR) and eyes with nonuse of silicone oil. A comparison of the outcome of vitrectomy alone (Vit.), versus combined with a scleral buckle (Vit.+SB), versus with retinectomy (Vit.+RT), versus with all three procedures (Vit.+SB+RT) was done. Statistical analysis was done using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 16 software. Pearson Chi-square test and Fisher's exact T-test were used to determine the effect of relationships. Results 138 eyes of 138 patients had grades C (100 eyes) and grade D (38 eyes) PVR. Methods In this study, 300 patients who underwent CBCT imaging for implant treatment planning were evaluated retrospectively. Patients were evaluated in four different categories, namely, maxillary sinus pathologies, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) findings, dentoalveolar findings, and soft-tissue calcifications. In maxillary sinus pathologies, we categorized patients by mucosal thickening, polypoidal lesion, air-liquid level, total opacification, oroantral fistula, periapical lesion related with maxillary sinus, antrolith, hypoplasia, and foreign body presence. In the TMJ findings category, we evaluated patients for erosion, osteophyte, sclerosis, flattening, and bifid condyle. For dentoalveolar findings, we looked for the residual root and impacted tooth. In soft-tissue calcifications, we examined patients for tonsillolith, sialolith, lymph node calcification, styloid ligament calcification, carotid artery calcifications, and osteoma cutis. Results Mucosal thickening was mostly seen in maxillary sinus pathology. One hundred and forty-eight (49.3%) of the patients had at least one TMJ incidental finding. We detected at least one impacted tooth in 17 (5.7%) patients' maxilla and 14 (4.7%) patients' mandibles. The most frequently seen calcification was styloid ligament calcification. There was no statistically significant relationship between the age groups and incidental findings (P > 0.05). Conclusions Oral radiologists should be aware of incidental findings and evaluate the possibilities of underlying diseases in a comprehensive way, and if there is a concern about the finding, they should refer the patient to the relevant specialist.Objective The aim of this in-vitro study was to investigate the effects of frequently consumed beverages on the color stability and microhardness of various restorative materials. Samples were stored in four solutions (distilled water, black tea, coffee, and cola) at room temperature for 1 week (n = 6). The color values are taken at the beginning and the color and microhardness values taken at the end of 1 week were evaluated by the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. Results The highest color change was observed in the Equia Fil, while the least color change was observed in the Z550 group. The highest degree of color change was observed in coffee and cola groups. While the lowest values of hardness were observed in the Solidex group, the highest values of hardness were observed in the Z550 group. The highest levels of hardness change were detected in the coffee and cola groups. Conclusion The color and hardness of restorative materials can be negatively affected by consumed beverages. Detailed ophthalmic evaluation to characterize the glaucoma was done. Depression and anxiety were assessed using the hospital anxiety and depression scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 21. Bivariate analysis was done to identify factors associated with depression and anxiety. The level of significance was at P less then 0.05. Results The participants were mainly females, 108 (59.3%), married, civil servants with tertiary education and mean age of 59.7 ± 13.3 SD years. Majority of them had advanced stage of primary open angle glaucoma. The perceptions of wildlife managers regarding human-wildlife conflict (HWC) scenarios are likely to affect the outcomes of conflict mitigation measures. We studied the attitudes and perceptions of forest department personnel regarding the management of human-rhesus macaque conflict (HRMC) in Himachal Pradesh, northern India. We collected data through a questionnaire survey and used frameworks from organizational psychology to draw insights from our results. Forest department personnel belonging to different organizational levels varied with respect to their views on conflict mitigation measures. While the views of upper level management personnel aligned closely with the publicly-stated position of the forest department, the opinions of lower level management personnel were aligned with the opinions of farmers. Overall, wildlife managers differed from farmers in their opinions regarding causes and mitigation of HRMC. Our results indicate the presence of human-human conflict in the context of HRMC and we discuss the implications of this for the management of HRMC.Irreversible losses of natural areas and damage to ecosystem services are caused by large-scale mining. These effects are prominent in Minas Gerais, which is home to a mining industry with hundreds of tailings dams concentrated in global hotspots the Cerrado and the Atlantic Forest. We present an overview of the spatial overlap between protected areas (PAs), priority conservation areas (PCAs), tailings dams, and their influence areas. A total of 218 dams accumulated environmental costs and liability that are represented by 2.24 thousand million m3 of tailings and industrial waste. Most dams (≈ 70%) are located in PCAs, 45 dams in conservation units, 58 in their respective buffer zones, and 51 in special protection areas. We have identified an urgent need to implement adequate public policies to establish management and monitoring mechanisms in PAs and PCAs and to address a scenario of high potential for socioenvironmental damage associated with tailings dams.MPI_AGE is a European Union co-funded research project aimed to use the Multidimensional Prognostic Index (MPI), a validated Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA)-based prognostic tool, to develop predictive rules that guide clinical and management decisions in older people in different European countries. The perceptions of wildlife managers regarding human-wildlife conflict (HWC) scenarios are likely to affect the outcomes of conflict mitigation measures. We studied the attitudes and perceptions of forest department personnel regarding the management of human-rhesus macaque conflict (HRMC) in Himachal Pradesh, northern India. We collected data through a questionnaire survey and used frameworks from organizational psychology to draw insights from our results. Forest department personnel belonging to different organizational levels varied with respect to their views on conflict mitigation measures. While the views of upper level management personnel aligned closely with the publicly-stated position of the forest department, the opinions of lower level management personnel were aligned with the opinions of farmers. Overall, wildlife managers differed from farmers in their opinions regarding causes and mitigation of HRMC. Our results indicate the presence of human-human conflict in the context of HRMC and we discuss the implications of this for the management of HRMC.Irreversible losses of natural areas and damage to ecosystem services are caused by large-scale mining. These effects are prominent in Minas Gerais, which is home to a mining industry with hundreds of tailings dams concentrated in global hotspots the Cerrado and the Atlantic Forest. We present an overview of the spatial overlap between protected areas (PAs), priority conservation areas (PCAs), tailings dams, and their influence areas. A total of 218 dams accumulated environmental costs and liability that are represented by 2.24 thousand million m3 of tailings and industrial waste. Most dams (≈ 70%) are located in PCAs, 45 dams in conservation units, 58 in their respective buffer zones, and 51 in special protection areas. We have identified an urgent need to implement adequate public policies to establish management and monitoring mechanisms in PAs and PCAs and to address a scenario of high potential for socioenvironmental damage associated with tailings dams.MPI_AGE is a European Union co-funded research project aimed to use the Multidimensional Prognostic Index (MPI), a validated Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA)-based prognostic tool, to develop predictive rules that guide clinical and management decisions in older people in different European countries. This apparent association between EZH2 and AR in activating target genes by cooperative recruitment might play a critical role in the emergence of CRPC. Our hypothesis is that combination treatment targeting EZH2 and AR may be a novel efficacious therapeutic regime for the treatment of castrate resistant prostate cancer, and we propose to investigate this possibility. People react to, and are affected by, stigmatizing experiences in different ways. The current study examined different reactions to weight stigma to identify who may be vulnerable to lasting distress from these experiences. Using a mixed methods approach, this study compared qualitative descriptions of reactions to experiences of weight stigma in conjunction with quantitative measures of weight bias internalization (WBI) and other health indices. Data were collected from September 2017 to August 2018. Participants were U.S. adults enrolled in a commercial weight management program (n = 425, 96% female) who reported previous experiences of weight stigma (on quantitative measures), and who also qualitatively described feeling either no longer distressed (n = 178) or still distressed (n = 247) by those experiences. Qualitative analyses revealed that participants who were no longer distressed engaged in self-acceptance, were not concerned about other's evaluations of them, and prioritized health rather than appeaes associated with being stigmatized. As non-receptor tyrosine kinases, Janus kinases (JAKs) have become an attractive target for the treatment of autoimmune diseases and cancers. JAKs play a pivotal role in innate immunity, inflammation, and hematopoiesis by mediating the signaling of numerous cytokines, growth factors, and interferons (IFNs). Selective inhibitors of a variety of JAK members are expected to inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokine-mediated inflammation and immune responses, while preventing targeting other subtypes of JAKs. In this work, poorly selective compounds based on 4- or 6-phenyl-pyrimidine derivatives have been improved to highly potent and selective compounds by designing a covalent binding tether, which attaches to the unique cysteine (Cys909) residue in JAK3. Compound 12 exhibited potent JAK3 inhibitory activity (IC50 = 1.7 nM) with an excellent selectivity profile when compared to the other JAK isoforms (>588-fold). In a cellular assay, compound 12 strongly inhibited JAK3-dependent signaling and T cell proliferation. Moreover, in vivo data revealed that compound 12 significantly suppressed oxazolone (OXZ)-induced delayed hypersensitivity responses in Balb/c ****. Compound 12 also displayed decent pharmacokinetic properties and was suitable for in vivo use. Taken together, these results indicated that compound 12 may be a promising tool compound as a selective JAK3 inhibitor for treating autoimmune diseases. Within the framework of multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA), weighting methods are typically used to capture decision-makers' preferences. In this regard, the increasing use of the combined LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) + DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) methodology as an MCDA tool requires an in-depth analysis of how the preferences of decision-makers could affect the outcomes of LCA + DEA studies. This work revisits a case study of 30 retail stores/supply chains located in Spain by applying alternative weighted DEA approaches to evaluate the influence of decision-makers' preferences (weights) on the final outcomes, with a focus on efficiency scores and operational and environmental benchmarks. Pollutant concentrations are poorly known for the largest animals on Earth, blue whales Balaenoptera musculus and fin whales Balaenoptera physalus. In this study, concentrations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) were determined in blubber biopsies and stable isotope values for nitrogen (δ15N) and carbon (δ13C) were measured using skin biopsies for 18 blue whales and 12 fin whales sampled in waters surrounding the Svalbard Archipelago, Norway. The samples were collected in summer during the period 2014-2018. POPs were dominated by DDTs, PCBs and toxaphenes, with median concentrations in blue/fin whales being 208/341, 127/275 and 133/233 ng/g lipid weight, respectively. Linear models indicated that pollutant concentrations were 1.6-3 times higher in fin whales than in blue whales, which is likely related to the higher trophic positions of fin whales, as indicated by their higher δ15N. Lower δ13C in fin whales suggests that they feed at higher latitudes than blue whales; these values were not correlated with pollutant concentrations. Pollutant levels were approximately twice as high in males compared to females (intraspecifically), which indicates that females of these species offload pollutants to their offspring during gestation and lactation, similar to many other mammalian species. Pollutant concentrations in balaenopterid whales from Svalbard waters were generally **** lower than in conspecific whales from the Mediterranean Sea or the Gulf of California, but higher than those in conspecifics from the Antarctic Peninsula.

Results The prevalence of periodontitis in OW, Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 obese was 16.4%, 79.2%, 2.8%, and 1.6%, respectively. Bacterial infection alone may not explain complete pathophysiology and clinical variations in disease pattern. Concept of herpesviruses playing a significant role in periodontal pathogenesis has been explored globally. Studies show varied results and difference may be accounted to variations existing in studied populations. The present study explored the prevalence of herpesviruses in periodontal disease of the North Indian population. Materials and Methods In this case-control study, tissue samples were collected from the normal gingiva (control n = 48) and deepest pocket (cases n = 48) using a single curette stroke. Periodontal disease status was assessed through the gingival index, pocket depth, and clinical attachment level which were compared to viral marker positivity. Results Ninety samples from 48 healthy gingiva and 48 periodontitis patients were assessed between the age range of 17-60 years. The prevalence of cytomegalovirus was 2.083% (cases) and 2.083% (controls) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was 18.75% (cases) and 0% (controls). Odd's ratio for EBV in patients with periodontitis is calculated (Haldane-Anscombe correction) to be 21.82%. Herpes simplex virus 1/2 and varicella-zoster virus were absent in both groups. Conclusions Within the limitation of this study, EBV was found in cases of periodontitis patients. Its role in disease initiation and progression is not clear. Further studies are required to ascertain EBV as risk factor in periodontal disease. Materials and Methods Twelve chronic periodontitis individuals with paired periodontal intraosseous defects were randomly treated either with PepGen P-15 exclusively (Control/Group A) or in concoction with PRF (Test/Group B) utilizing split-mouth study design. Pocket probing depth (PPD), relative attachment level (RAL), and relative position of gingival margin were assessed at 3- and 6-month interval, whereas the linear and volumetric bone defect regeneration were assessed at 6 months postoperatively using CT scan. Results Both the groups validated statistically significant PPD reduction, RAL gain at 3 and 6 months, but on intergroup comparison, test group CT images revealed significantly greater linear bone gain and volumetric bone gain, with mean difference of 0.73 ± 0.28 (P = 0.018) and 2.70 ± 1.36 (P = 0.06) at 6 months in comparison to the baseline data. Conclusions PepGen P-15 and PRF blend had better regeneration potential for the management of intrabony defects. Further long-term investigations on large sample size are recommended to authenticate the same. Materials and Methods A double-blinded study was carried out with 30 extracted teeth with no carious lesion or restored teeth were selected and grouped randomly as Group A - diode laser, Group B - electrode application, Group C - hydroxyapatite powder plus diode laser, Group D - hydroxyapatite powder plus electrode application, Group E - strontium chloride powder plus diode laser, and Group F - strontium chloride powder plus electrode application. All the samples were made by preparing a notch of 2 mm measured with UNC-15 probe at cementoenamel junction using a diamond cylindrical *** at high speed. The teeth were then washed with distilled water and stored in solution containing 2.5% glutaraldehyde solution in 0.1 M sodium phosphate buffer for 24 h. The samples were treated as mentioned in above said groups and were viewed under SEM the degree of occlusion of the dentinal tubules were quantified using an image analyzer. Results Highest number of open dentinal tubules was found with Group B, that is, electrode application, whereas Group C, that is, hydroxyapatite powder plus diode laser showed highest occluded tubules. One-way ANOVA showed statistically significant difference across all the groups (P = 0.000); further, intergroup comparison with Tukey's test showed better tubular occlusion with Group C. Conclusion The SEM results showed highest tubular occlusion with hydroxyapatite powder plus diode laser and least with electrode. Aim The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the use of diode lasers as adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) compared to SRP alone on various clinical and microbiologic parameters in chronic periodontitis patients. Settings and Design Patients were taken from the department of periodontology and implantology, who were having chronic periodontitis. Materials and Methods A total of forty patients participated in the study and they were divided into Group I - the test group (SRP + diode laser) and Group II - the control group (SRP alone). The following clinical parameters were assessed oral hygiene index simplified; clinical attachment level (CAL); probing pocket depth (PPD); bleeding on probing (BOP) at baseline, 4 weeks, and 12 weeks after the treatment; and colony-forming units (CFUs) 1 week postoperatively.

Bacterial infection alone may not explain complete pathophysiology and clinical variations in disease pattern. Concept of herpesviruses playing a significant role in periodontal pathogenesis has been explored globally. Studies show varied results and difference may be accounted to variations existing in studied populations. The present study explored the prevalence of herpesviruses in periodontal disease of the North Indian population. Materials and Methods In this case-control study, tissue samples were collected from the normal gingiva (control n = 48) and deepest pocket (cases n = 48) using a single curette stroke. Periodontal disease status was assessed through the gingival index, pocket depth, and clinical attachment level which were compared to viral marker positivity. Results Ninety samples from 48 healthy gingiva and 48 periodontitis patients were assessed between the age range of 17-60 years. The prevalence of cytomegalovirus was 2.083% (cases) and 2.083% (controls) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was 18.75% (cases) and 0% (controls). Odd's ratio for EBV in patients with periodontitis is calculated (Haldane-Anscombe correction) to be 21.82%. Herpes simplex virus 1/2 and varicella-zoster virus were absent in both groups. Conclusions Within the limitation of this study, EBV was found in cases of periodontitis patients. Its role in disease initiation and progression is not clear. Further studies are required to ascertain EBV as risk factor in periodontal disease. Materials and Methods Twelve chronic periodontitis individuals with paired periodontal intraosseous defects were randomly treated either with PepGen P-15 exclusively (Control/Group A) or in concoction with PRF (Test/Group B) utilizing split-mouth study design. Pocket probing depth (PPD), relative attachment level (RAL), and relative position of gingival margin were assessed at 3- and 6-month interval, whereas the linear and volumetric bone defect regeneration were assessed at 6 months postoperatively using CT scan. Results Both the groups validated statistically significant PPD reduction, RAL gain at 3 and 6 months, but on intergroup comparison, test group CT images revealed significantly greater linear bone gain and volumetric bone gain, with mean difference of 0.73 ± 0.28 (P = 0.018) and 2.70 ± 1.36 (P = 0.06) at 6 months in comparison to the baseline data. Conclusions PepGen P-15 and PRF blend had better regeneration potential for the management of intrabony defects. Further long-term investigations on large sample size are recommended to authenticate the same. Materials and Methods A double-blinded study was carried out with 30 extracted teeth with no carious lesion or restored teeth were selected and grouped randomly as Group A - diode laser, Group B - electrode application, Group C - hydroxyapatite powder plus diode laser, Group D - hydroxyapatite powder plus electrode application, Group E - strontium chloride powder plus diode laser, and Group F - strontium chloride powder plus electrode application. All the samples were made by preparing a notch of 2 mm measured with UNC-15 probe at cementoenamel junction using a diamond cylindrical bur at high speed. The teeth were then washed with distilled water and stored in solution containing 2.5% glutaraldehyde solution in 0.1 M sodium phosphate buffer for 24 h. The samples were treated as mentioned in above said groups and were viewed under SEM the degree of occlusion of the dentinal tubules were quantified using an image analyzer. Results Highest number of open dentinal tubules was found with Group B, that is, electrode application, whereas Group C, that is, hydroxyapatite powder plus diode laser showed highest occluded tubules. One-way ANOVA showed statistically significant difference across all the groups (P = 0.000); further, intergroup comparison with Tukey's test showed better tubular occlusion with Group C. Conclusion The SEM results showed highest tubular occlusion with hydroxyapatite powder plus diode laser and least with electrode. However, more orthogonal radiographs are required for diagnosis. In this study, we investigated how many orthogonal radiographs are necessary to diagnose feline DJD among domestic short-haired cats. We analyzed the data from 101 cats for which the owners requested screening for arthritis. Orthogonal radiographs of appendicular and intervertebral joints were taken from the chest to the caudal side. Radiographs were then reviewed and graded by severity of DJD in each joint. Radiographic evidence of appendicular DJD was detected in 74.26% of 101 cats, of which 40.59% had intervertebral DJD (typically of the lumbosacral joint). Appendicular DJD was most common in elbow joints. Lameness was recognized by an owner of two cats and was diagnosed by a veterinarian in two cats. No obvious pain was detected on palpation in any cats with appendicular osteoarthritis, but lumbosacral DJD was associated with **** pain in seven cases. This mycotoxin has several toxic effects. In particular, ochratoxin has significant nephrotoxic potential. In fact, OTA has been described as being responsible for naturally occurring animal and human kidney disorders. The toxicity of this mycotoxin involves the induction of the oxidative stress pathways. Therefore, in the present study, we wanted to evaluate the potential protective effects of hydroxytyrosol (HT), a phenolic constituent with potent antioxidant activity, of extra virgin olive oil in three different renal cell lines, the Madin-Darby canine kidney cell line (****), a pig kidney cell line (LLC-PK1), and a rabbit kidney cell line (RK 13), and in rats. Our results clearly showed that renal cells respond to OTA exposure by reducing cell proliferation and the induction of oxidative stress. Pre-incubation of the cells with HT prevented the cellular cytotoxicity and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels induced by OTA. In addition, the antioxidative activity of HT was studied by measuring malondialdehyde (MDA) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels and nitrosative stress. Finally, we investigated the capability of HT (20 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) to act in vivo. In rats, HT reduced oxidative stress and collagen accumulation in the kidney and counteracted the augmentations in AST, ALT, and creatinine levels following OTA induction (250 μg/kg for 90 days orally). In conclusion, our findings demonstrate that HT is able to protect three renal cell lines from the damage induced by OTA and protect the kidneys of rats. Therefore, the use of this compound could be an important strategy for the treatment and prevention of this type of kidney dysfunction. The contents of synaptic vesicular and cytosolic DA were analyzed. Further, the levels of striatal PI were also measured. ROT had caused significant reduction in the neurite outgrowth in the exposed PC12 cells while the tested concentrations of AS and L-DOPA can exert their protective effect on the stunted neurite growth. The levels of Bax, Bcl-2, and cytochrome c which were significantly disturbed by ROT, could also be affected by AS thereby suggesting its effect on neurons. AS treatment caused an improved motor performance, vesicular and cytosolic DA, and striatal PI. These pre-clinical findings force us to speculate that AS could be a potential drug candidate in combating ROT-induced variations that are possibly precipitated by varied vesicular trafficking of DA. V.BACKGROUND Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease that produces non-scarring hair loss around the body. Gene variants of the cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen 4 (CTLA4) gene, a negative regulator of T-cell response, have been associated with a predisposition to autoimmune diseases in different populations; however, the involvement of these genetic variants in the development of AA is controversial. OBJECTIVE The present study evaluated the potential association of two CTLA4 gene variants with alopecia areata in a Mexican population. METHODS We genotyped +49AG (rs231775) and CT60 (rs3087243) variants in 50 AA patients and 100 healthy control participants through PCR-RFLP. RESULTS No statistical difference was observed for either of the gene variants regarding allele or genotype frequencies between AA patients and the controls when the parameters of family/personal history of autoimmune diseases or gender were considered (p>0.05). STUDY LIMITATIONS Small sample size of patients and the data were obtained from Northeast Mexico population. CONCLUSION The genetic variants rs231775 and rs3087243 of the CTLA4 gene are not a risk factor for the development of alopecia areata in the analyzed Mexican population. Pseudomycetoma is an extremely rare deep mycosis, caused by dermatophytic fungi that penetrate the tissue from infected follicles of tinea capitis. Both clinically and histopathology are similar to eumycetoma, being distinguished through the isolation of the fungus, which in the case of pseudomycetoma can be Microsporum spp. or Trichophyton spp. genre. We present a 24 year-old man with an exuberant tumor in the occipital region with fistula, whose histopathological examination evidenced grains composed of hyaline hyphae and the culture for fungi isolated the agent Microsporum canis. Combined treatment of surgical excision followed by oral griseofulvin for two years was performed, with resolution of the condition. Chronic Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is endemic worldwide, and the prevalence is especially high in the Asia-Pacific regions. Despite its high prevalence, the literature regarding the impact of HBV infection on subfertility and fertility treatment remains limited and conflicting. Latest studies do not suggest any detrimental effect of HBV infection on the outcome of IVF/ICSI treatment in women having chronic HBV infection. There is evidence that HBV exists in ovarian tissue including oocyte and follicular fluid, and therefore has the potential risk of transmission to the embryo, which can explain the finding of vertical transmission despite immunoprophylaxis. Most recently, we have observed the evidence of HBV viral replication in female HBV carriers undergoing IVF/ICSI treatment. This review was performed to provide insight into how counselors' communication of uncertain test results during genetic counseling for cancer affects counselors and counselees. METHODS A systematic mixed studies review was undertaken to review research on the effects of communicating uncertain test results. Four databases were searched using a PICO search strategy. Study findings of articles meeting the inclusion criteria were synthesized narratively. RESULTS Twenty-four articles were included. Uncertain test results encompassed either an inconclusive test result or a variant of unknown significance (VUS). Counselees involved almost exclusively women at risk of hereditary breast and/or ovarian cancer. None of the articles reported effects on counselor outcomes. Counselee outcomes were categorized as cognitive, affective or behavioral. Interpretation of a VUS was overall reported as difficult, and counselees' distress and worry were repeatedly found to decrease over time after the discussion of any uncertain test result. For most other outcomes, findings were sparse and/or inconsistent. CONCLUSION Evidence on effects on counselee outcomes is scant and inconsistent. Future studies are warranted to provide insight into how counselees and counselors are affected. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Clinical practice could benefit from guidelines on how to address uncertain test results during pre- and posttest genetic consultations. Operable oral tongue cancers are managed best with surgery followed by adjuvant therapy as and when indicated. The only factor that affects the prognosis, and is under the control of a surgeon, is the tumour margin. Often in cases with trismus, which is prevalent in tobacco and areca nut users, obtaining a clear margin intraorally can be challenging. Approaches described until now to obtain clear margins in these cases have a great impact on the postoperative recovery and morbidity. In our experience, lingual sulcus release is a safe and reproducible technique for these cases. The transcervically elevated lingual sulcus provides an additional layer of safe margin for the management of squamous cell tongue carcinoma with trismus. Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthrocentesis is considered an effective and minimally invasive procedure for certain conditions related to temporomandibular disorders. The ideal irrigation volume for arthrocentesis lavage has not yet been defined. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of different saline solution volumes in removing methylene blue from the TMJ space of fresh human cadavers. Nineteen cadavers were selected and 1ml of 10μM methylene blue solution was injected into the upper joint space unilaterally. Conventional arthrocentesis was then conducted by infusion of 300ml of 0.9% saline solution, collecting a 1-ml sample from the drained quantity for every 25ml injected. Combined treatment of surgical excision followed by oral griseofulvin for two years was performed, with resolution of the condition. Chronic Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is endemic worldwide, and the prevalence is especially high in the Asia-Pacific regions. Despite its high prevalence, the literature regarding the impact of HBV infection on subfertility and fertility treatment remains limited and conflicting. Latest studies do not suggest any detrimental effect of HBV infection on the outcome of IVF/ICSI treatment in women having chronic HBV infection. There is evidence that HBV exists in ovarian tissue including oocyte and follicular fluid, and therefore has the potential risk of transmission to the embryo, which can explain the finding of vertical transmission despite immunoprophylaxis. Most recently, we have observed the evidence of HBV viral replication in female HBV carriers undergoing IVF/ICSI treatment. This review was performed to provide insight into how counselors' communication of uncertain test results during genetic counseling for cancer affects counselors and counselees. METHODS A systematic mixed studies review was undertaken to review research on the effects of communicating uncertain test results. Four databases were searched using a PICO search strategy. Study findings of articles meeting the inclusion criteria were synthesized narratively. RESULTS Twenty-four articles were included. Uncertain test results encompassed either an inconclusive test result or a variant of unknown significance (VUS). Counselees involved almost exclusively women at risk of hereditary breast and/or ovarian cancer. None of the articles reported effects on counselor outcomes. Counselee outcomes were categorized as cognitive, affective or behavioral. Interpretation of a VUS was overall reported as difficult, and counselees' distress and worry were repeatedly found to decrease over time after the discussion of any uncertain test result. For most other outcomes, findings were sparse and/or inconsistent. CONCLUSION Evidence on effects on counselee outcomes is scant and inconsistent. Future studies are warranted to provide insight into how counselees and counselors are affected. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Clinical practice could benefit from guidelines on how to address uncertain test results during pre- and posttest genetic consultations. Operable oral tongue cancers are managed best with surgery followed by adjuvant therapy as and when indicated. The only factor that affects the prognosis, and is under the control of a surgeon, is the tumour margin. Often in cases with trismus, which is prevalent in tobacco and areca nut users, obtaining a clear margin intraorally can be challenging. Approaches described until now to obtain clear margins in these cases have a great impact on the postoperative recovery and morbidity. In our experience, lingual sulcus release is a safe and reproducible technique for these cases. The transcervically elevated lingual sulcus provides an additional layer of safe margin for the management of squamous cell tongue carcinoma with trismus. Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthrocentesis is considered an effective and minimally invasive procedure for certain conditions related to temporomandibular disorders. The ideal irrigation volume for arthrocentesis lavage has not yet been defined. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of different saline solution volumes in removing methylene blue from the TMJ space of fresh human cadavers. Nineteen cadavers were selected and 1ml of 10μM methylene blue solution was injected into the upper joint space unilaterally. Conventional arthrocentesis was then conducted by infusion of 300ml of 0.9% saline solution, collecting a 1-ml sample from the drained quantity for every 25ml injected. Finally, the samples were assayed by measuring photo absorbance of the methylene blue solution.
