Средний возраст выявления БГСА у пациентов с ОТФ был 5,6 года. В зависимости от проводимого лечения сформировано 3 группы больных I группа - 150 детей с катаральной стадией ЭСО, получавших консервативное и хирургическое лечение по поводу патологии верхних дыхательных путей; II группа - 146 детей с секреторной стадией ЭСО, которым проведено консервативное и хирургическое лечение миринготомия/установка шунта в барабанную перепонку одномоментно с хирургическим устранением блока устья слуховой трубы, курс консервативного лечения для детей, не требующих оперативного лечения; III группа - 50 детей с секреторной стадией ЭСО и аденоидами III степени, родители которых, вопреки совету врача, отказались от предложенного проведения миринготомии / установки шунта в барабанную перепонку одномоментно с хирургическим устранением блока устья слуховой трубы. Этим детям была выполнена только аденотомия. Заключение. With real-time IGRT, no treatments had prostate CTV D98% dose 5% less than planned. Without real-time IGRT, 13 treatments (5·5%) had prostate CTV D98% doses 5% less than planned. The prostate CTV D98% dose with real-time IGRT was closer to the plan by an average of 1·0% (range -2·8% to 20·3%). Patient outcomes show no change in the 12-month patient reported outcomes compared with baseline and no grade ≥3 ** or GI toxicities. Major RTI was defined as >5 unscheduled RT appointment cancellations. Univariate and multivariable (MVA) logistic and linear regression analyses identified associated factors. Major RTI was mapped by patient residence. A two-sided p-value of 2 RT interruptions. 337 patients (9%) had major RTI. Disparities in major RTI were seen across Medicaid vs. commercial/Medicare insurance (22.5% vs. 7.2%, p= less then 0.0001), low vs. high predicted income (13.0% vs. 5.9%, p= less then 0.0001), Black vs. White race (12.0% vs. 6.6%, p= less then 0.0001), and urban vs. suburban treatment location (12.0 vs. 6.3%, p= less then 0.0001). On MVA, increased odds of major RTI were seen for Medicaid patients (OR 3.35 95%CI 2.25-5.00, p= less then 0.0001; v commercial/Medicare), and head & neck (OR 3.74 95% CI 2.56-5.46, p= less then 0.0001), gynecologic (OR 3.28 95%CI 2.09-5.15, p= less then 0.0001), and lung cancers (OR 3.12 95%CI 1.96-4.97, p= less then 0.0001) compared to breast cancer. Major RTI mapped to urban, majority Black, low-income neighborhoods, as well as to rural, majority White, low-income regions. CONCLUSION Radiation treatment interruption disproportionately impacted financially and socially vulnerable patient populations and mapped to high poverty neighborhoods. Geospatial mapping affords an opportunity to correlate RT access on a neighborhood level to inform potential intervention strategies. Speeding behaviour is known to influence crash risk among alcohol-impaired drivers, but this relationship is scarcely explored. The present study investigated the effects of different Blood Alcohol Concentrations (BAC) levels on driving performance with respect to mean speed of drivers and their ability to avoid crashes during sudden events while driving. Eighty-two drivers participated in the simulation driving experiment at four ****levels (0%, 0.03 %, 0.05 % and 0.08 % BAC) in rural and urban driving scenarios. Two sudden events (pedestrian crossing and road crossing by parked vehicles (a car and a truck) in the perpendicular direction of traffic) were designed to evaluate the crash probabilities in both the driving scenarios. Generalized linear mixed models were developed to analyse the effects of ****levels and driver attributes (e.g., age, gender) on mean speeds and crash probabilities. Results for mean speed showed that, compared to sober state, drivers drove 3.5 kmph, 5.76 kmph and 8.78 kmph faster at 0.03 %, 0.05 % and 0.08 % ****respectively in the rural environment and this increment was 3.6 kmph, 3.69 kmph and 4.13 kmph in the urban environment. The model results for crash probabilities revealed that 0.03 %, 0.05 % and 0.08 % ****levels increased the crash probabilities by 1.9 times, 2 times and 3 times in case of the rural environment and 2 times, 2.3 times and 3.5 times respectively in the urban driving environment. As a widespread and reversible post-translational modification of proteins, S-glutathionylation specifically generates the mixed disulfides between cysteine residues and glutathione, which regulates various biological processes including oxidative stress, nitrosative stress and signal transduction. The identification of proteins and specific sites that undergo S-glutathionylation is crucial for understanding the underlying mechanisms and regulatory effects of S-glutathionylation. Experimental identification of S-glutathionylation sites is laborious and time-consuming, whereas computational predictions are more attractive due to their high speed and convenience. Here, we developed a novel computational framework DeepGSH (http//deepgsh.cancerbio.info/) for species-specific S-glutathionylation sites prediction, based on deep learning and particle swarm optimization algorithms. 5-fold cross validation indicated that DeepGSH was able to achieve an AUC of 0.8393 and 0.8458 for Homo sapiens and Mus musculus. According to critical evaluation and comparison, DeepGSH showed excellent robustness and better performance than existing tools in both species, demonstrating DeepGSH was suitable for S-glutathionylation prediction. The prediction results of DeepGSH might provide guidance for experimental validation of S-glutathionylation sites and helpful information to understand the intrinsic mechanisms. "Blast hand" is a traumatic hand injury related to an explosion. Artisanal gold miners use dynamite to excavate gold pits; such activities expose them to blast hand injuries. This work aims to study blast injuries to gold miners' hands. Dedicated classifications and scores were used to evaluate the injury topography, injury severity, physical dependence, and aesthetic impact. Data were analyzed statistically. Thirty patients with 46 blast hand injuries among 516 hand injuries were collected. All patients were males and full-time artisanal gold miners. They were seen in the emergency room an average of 10.2hours (1-72) after the explosion. Explosions were caused by a 500g dynamite charge in all cases. The detonation was mainly thermal (n=13), triggered by the patient himself (n=24) and inside the gold pit (n=20). Injuries were bilateral (53%) or left side predominant (59%). Complex injuries were present in 21 hands. The MHISS (Modified Hand Injury Severity Score) was severe (n=7) and major (n=32). Associated injuries were musculoskeletal (n=12), ophthalmologic (n=14) and maxillofacial (n=10). Complexes injuries were correlated to being inside the pit at the time of the explosion. Treatment was conservative more often (n=33) than amputation (n=13). The functional recovery was complete in 22 hands (10 patients). Return to work at the same level was possible for only eight hands (5 patients). The presence of local sequelae or associated injuries negatively impacted the return to work. In Burkina Faso, gold miner's blast hand injuries cause post-traumatic social and professional reintegration issues. Better regulation of artisanal gold mining and expansion of treatment modalities (microsurgery, hand rehabilitation, splinting) may improve the outcome.

RESULTS The enrollment goal of 125 patients was met. Median age was 46 years (range, 21-65 years), and 112 patients (90% [95% CI, 83% to 94%]) completed dose-dense paclitaxel within 7 weeks. Omission of peg-filgrastim was not causally related to noncompletion of paclitaxel in any patients. The most common reasons for dose reduction or delays were nonhematologic. One patient experienced febrile neutropenia but was able to complete paclitaxel on time. Eight patients (6.4%) received peg-filgrastim during the trial. Overall, peg-filgrastim was administered in only 4.3% of paclitaxel cycles. CONCLUSION Omission of routine peg-filgrastim during dose-dense paclitaxel according to a prespecified algorithm seems to be safe and feasible and was associated with a 95.7% reduction in the use of peg-filgrastim relative to the current standard of care.Male infertility can be caused by environmental factors, genetic defects, physiological and endocrine deficiencies and testicular pathologies. Aluminium (Al) can cause male infertility through a number of mechanisms. The aim of our study was thus to determine whether vitamin E (VitE) has protective effects on Al-induced testicular damage, which was determined according to sperm counts and morphology and using the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) method. Thirty-four male Wistar rats (250-300 g) were randomly assigned to control (no procedures performed; n = 6) or 0.2 mL intraperitoneal injection group (n = 7 each; three times per week for 4 weeks) sham (distilled water), 10 mg/kg Al, 500 mg/kg VitE and 10 mg/kg Al plus 500 mg/kg VitE (Al + VitE). Sperm samples were evaluated for andrological parameters. The testes were examined by haematoxylin/eosin. The epithelial thickness and areas were calculated and Johnsen scores were determined for the germinal epithelium; the apoptotic indices were determined from TUNEL staining. For Al, the bonds between the germinal epithelial cells were broken in some tubules, and there were unidentified cells in the lumen of some tubules. For control, sham and VitE, normal morphology of the germinal epithelium was generally preserved. With Al + VitE, the full germinal epithelium cell series was maintained, with only mature sperm in the lumen. TUNEL-positive cells were significantly higher with Al compared to control and sham (p 0.05). Our findings show that Al caused testicular damage. VitE reduced the number of apoptotic cells during the damage caused by Al.PURPOSE The HIT-2000-BIS4 trial aimed to avoid highly detrimental craniospinal irradiation (CSI) in children less then 4 years of age with nonmetastatic medulloblastoma by systemic chemotherapy, intraventricular methotrexate, and risk-adapted local radiotherapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS From 2001-2011, 87 patients received systemic chemotherapy and intraventricular methotrexate. Until 2006, CSI was reserved for nonresponse or progression. After 2006, local radiotherapy was introduced for nonresponders or patients with classic medulloblastoma (CMB) or large-cell/anaplastic medulloblastoma (LCA). DNA methylation profiles of infantile sonic hedgehog-activated medulloblastoma (SHH-INF) were subdivided into iSHH-I and iSHH-II subtypes in the HIT-2000-BIS4 cohort and a validation cohort (n = 71) from the HIT group and Russia. RESULTS Five years after diagnosis, patients with desmoplastic medulloblastoma (DMB) or medulloblastoma with extensive nodularity (MBEN; n = 42) had 93% progression-free survival (5y-PFS), 100% CA was not improved by local radiotherapy. In this work we set out to understand whether recently developed non-lethal gut microbe-targeting small molecule choline trimethylamine (TMA) lyase inhibitors also alter host cholesterol and bile acid metabolism. Treatment of **** with the mechanism-based choline TMA lyase inhibitor, iodomethylcholine (IMC), increased fecal neutral sterol loss in the form of coprostanol, a bacteria metabolite of cholesterol. In parallel, IMC treatment resulted in marked reductions in the intestinal sterol transporter Niemann Pick C1-Like 1 (NPC1L1) and reorganization of the gut microbial community, primarily reversing choline supplemented diet-induced changes.
RESULTS The enrollment goal of 125 patients was met. Median age was 46 years (range, 21-65 years), and 112 patients (90% [95% CI, 83% to 94%]) completed dose-dense paclitaxel within 7 weeks. Omission of peg-filgrastim was not causally related to noncompletion of paclitaxel in any patients. The most common reasons for dose reduction or delays were nonhematologic. One patient experienced febrile neutropenia but was able to complete paclitaxel on time. Eight patients (6.4%) received peg-filgrastim during the trial. Overall, peg-filgrastim was administered in only 4.3% of paclitaxel cycles. CONCLUSION Omission of routine peg-filgrastim during dose-dense paclitaxel according to a prespecified algorithm seems to be safe and feasible and was associated with a 95.7% reduction in the use of peg-filgrastim relative to the current standard of care.Male infertility can be caused by environmental factors, genetic defects, physiological and endocrine deficiencies and testicular pathologies. Aluminium (Al) can cause male infertility through a number of mechanisms. The aim of our study was thus to determine whether vitamin E (VitE) has protective effects on Al-induced testicular damage, which was determined according to sperm counts and morphology and using the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) method. Thirty-four male Wistar rats (250-300 g) were randomly assigned to control (no procedures performed; n = 6) or 0.2 mL intraperitoneal injection group (n = 7 each; three times per week for 4 weeks) sham (distilled water), 10 mg/kg Al, 500 mg/kg VitE and 10 mg/kg Al plus 500 mg/kg VitE (Al + VitE). Sperm samples were evaluated for andrological parameters. The testes were examined by haematoxylin/eosin. The epithelial thickness and areas were calculated and Johnsen scores were determined for the germinal epithelium; the apoptotic indices were determined from TUNEL staining. For Al, the bonds between the germinal epithelial cells were broken in some tubules, and there were unidentified cells in the lumen of some tubules. For control, sham and VitE, normal morphology of the germinal epithelium was generally preserved. With Al + VitE, the full germinal epithelium cell series was maintained, with only mature sperm in the lumen. TUNEL-positive cells were significantly higher with Al compared to control and sham (p 0.05). Our findings show that Al caused testicular damage. VitE reduced the number of apoptotic cells during the damage caused by Al.PURPOSE The HIT-2000-BIS4 trial aimed to avoid highly detrimental craniospinal irradiation (CSI) in children less then 4 years of age with nonmetastatic medulloblastoma by systemic chemotherapy, intraventricular methotrexate, and risk-adapted local radiotherapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS From 2001-2011, 87 patients received systemic chemotherapy and intraventricular methotrexate. Until 2006, CSI was reserved for nonresponse or progression. After 2006, local radiotherapy was introduced for nonresponders or patients with classic medulloblastoma (CMB) or large-cell/anaplastic medulloblastoma (LCA). DNA methylation profiles of infantile sonic hedgehog-activated medulloblastoma (SHH-INF) were subdivided into iSHH-I and iSHH-II subtypes in the HIT-2000-BIS4 cohort and a validation cohort (n = 71) from the HIT group and Russia. RESULTS Five years after diagnosis, patients with desmoplastic medulloblastoma (DMB) or medulloblastoma with extensive nodularity (MBEN; n = 42) had 93% progression-free survival (5y-PFS), 100% CA was not improved by local radiotherapy. People with LBP have fewer standing weight shifts compared with back-healthy people. Participants were classified as standing-tolerant or intolerant. Participants were provided SSDs for 12 weeks. Participants were assigned to intervention (graded standing exposure and exercise) or control (no instruction) conditions. Participants reported weekly sitting time and average/worst LBP. Standing weight shifts and LBP were re-assessed post-intervention. All groups decreased sitting time (range 30-50%) over 12 weeks. An increase in use of echinocandins occurred in recent years, with a proportional decrease in the use of fluconazole and amphotericin B. Surprisingly, mortality of candidaemia has remained unchanged over the years in the largest Latin American country, regardless of treatment with echinocandins. Potential explanations for these findings are discussed.Purpose To develop an Arabic version of the CPQ8-10 and test its validity and reliability for use among Arabic-speaking children. Methods The 25-item professionally translated questionnaire included two global rating questions across four domains, which was assessed through a pilot study on 20 participants who were not included in the main study. Construct (convergent and discriminant) validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability were assessed using Spearman's rank correlation coefficients, Cronbach's alpha coefficient, and intraclass correlation coefficient, respectively. All children were clinically examined; 66 children completed the questionnaire a second time. A cross-sectional study design was employed. Results CPQ8-10 scores and global ratings were positively correlated. CPQ8-10 scores were highest in group II, followed by groups I and III, respectively. CPQ8-10 scores were significantly higher in children affected with caries or malocclusion compared to unaffected children. Cronbach's alpha was 0.95 and the intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.97. Clinical anchors used to test validity included number of diagnoses (2-4 vs. 5+), mental health diagnosis (yes/no), medication adherence and health literacy (suboptimal/optimal), and changes in self-efficacy, global physical, and global mental health (worsening/improving). Independent-samples t-tests were used to compare scores. Results PETS scales showed good internal consistency (αs ≥ 0.80). There were few differences across number of diagnoses, but having a mental health diagnosis was associated with higher baseline PETS burden scores (Ps less then .05). Suboptimal medication adherence and health literacy over time were associated with worse 12-month PETS burden scores (Ps less then .05). Compared with improvements, declines over time in self-efficacy, global physical health, and global mental health were each associated with worsening change scores on PETS impact summary, medical expenses, and bother due to medication reliance and medication side effects (Ps less then .05). Conclusion Among multi-morbid adults, the PETS demonstrated evidence of known-groups validity and responsiveness to change across both objective (e.g., mental health diagnoses) and subjective anchors (e.g., changes in self-efficacy, global physical, and global mental health).Among the major bacterial secretions, outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) are significant and highly functional. The proteins and other biomolecules identified within OMVs provide new insights into the possible functions of OMVs in bacteria. OMVs are rich in proteins, nucleic acids, toxins and virulence factors that play a critical role in bacteria-host interactions. In this review, we discuss some proteins with multifunctional features from bacterial OMVs and their role involving the mechanisms of bacterial survival and defence. Proteins with moonlighting activities in OMVs are discussed based on their functions in bacteria. OMVs harbour many other proteins that are important, such as proteins involved in virulence, defence, and competition. Overall, OMVs are a power-packed aid for bacteria, harbouring many defensive and moonlighting proteins and acting as a survival kit in case of an emergency or as a defence weapon. In summary, OMVs can be defined as bug-out bags for bacterial defence and, therefore, survival.The saprophytic fungus Trichoderma reesei has long been used as a model to study microbial degradation of lignocellulosic biomass. The major cellulolytic enzymes of T. reesei are the cellobiohydrolases CBH1 and CBH2, which constitute more than 70% of total proteins secreted by the fungus. However, their physiological functions and effects on enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose substrates are not sufficiently elucidated. Here, the cellobiohydrolase-encoding genes cbh1 and cbh2 were deleted, individually or combinatively, by using an auxotrophic marker-recycling technique in T. reesei. When cultured on media with different soluble carbon sources, all three deletion strains (Δcbh1, Δcbh2, and Δcbh1Δcbh2) exhibited no dramatic variation in morphological phenotypes, but their growth rates increased apparently when cultured on soluble cellulase-inducing carbon sources. In addition, Δcbh1 showed dramatically reduced growth and Δcbh1Δcbh2 could hardly grew on microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), whereas all strains grew equally on sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na), suggesting that the influence of the CBHs on growth was carbon source-dependent.

Over the last decades, packed column supercritical fluid chromatography (pSFC) using carbon dioxide (CO2) as supercritical fluid has gained interest as a complementary separation technique to liquid chromatography (LC). Various commercial solutions for the hyphenation to atmospheric pressure ionization (API) including electrospray (ESI) and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) have been described using split-flow or full-flow introduction approaches. This review discusses various aspects of the hyphenation using these two approaches. It also illustrates the difference between LC-MS and SFC-MS. The benefits and challenges of the decoupling of the separation mobile phase from the ionization conditions are also pointed out. The effect of CO2 on ESI performance and the adduct reduction are also discussed. Finally, limitation of current hardware and the limited use of smaller column internal diameters (i.d.) are discussed. In this context, we report in this paper the development of a disposable immunoplatform for the rapid and simultaneous determination of two protein biomarkers recently reported to be involved in the pathological process of neurodegenerative disorders (NDD), tau protein (tau), and TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43). The methodology involves implementation of a sandwich-type immunoassay on the surface of dual screen-printed carbon electrodes (dSPCEs) electrochemically grafted with p-aminobenzoic acid (p-ABA), which allows the covalent immobilization of a gold nanoparticle-poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimer nanocomposite (3D-Au-PAMAM). This scaffold was employed for the immobilization of the capture antibodies (CAbs). Detector antibodies labeled with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and amperometric detection at - 0.20 V (vs. Ag pseudo-reference electrode) using the H2O2/hydroquinone (HQ) system were used. However, the sensitivity and accuracy of the conventional azeotropic distillation (AD) method are inadequate. Karl Fischer titration methods may give false high results because of the reducing sulfur compounds in crude oil. The present study developed an azeotropic distillation Karl Fischer coulometric titration (AD-KFCT) method which required a modified instrument and a new calibration procedure. The method was modified to decrease the interference caused by reducing sulfur compounds. A certified reference material for water content in liquid was used to determine the recovery of water mass achieved using the AD-KFCT method. The effect of the sample polarity on the method accuracy was assessed. The relative error and relative standard deviations of the water content in three crude oils containing known amounts of water were -7.5% to 2.9% and 0.4% to 6.0%, respectively. The interference by reducing sulfur compounds was studied. The crude oil containing 1-propanethiol was measured using a sulfur dioxide-free anolyte, and the amount of iodine consumed by the distilled 1-propanethiol was determined. The contribution of 1-propanethiol was then subtracted from the water content measured using the normal Karl Fischer reagent. Finally, the relative error of the modified water content in the crude oil samples containing 1-propanethiol was -4.4% to 0.7%. Therefore, the modified AD-KFCT method is accurate and convenient for crude oil.Background Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and leiomyoma are common tumors. The coexistence of these two tumors can be classified into two types the overlying type and the separate type. The overlying type is rare. Methods We report 12 cases of the overlying type treated by endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). They underwent pre-ESD endoscopic examination with white-light imaging, iodine staining, narrow-band imaging, endoscopic ultrasound, and biopsy. The clinical, endoscopic and pathologic characteristics were reviewed. Results Among the 12 patients, 3 were female and 9 were male. The age range was 49-76 years. They accounted for 4.0% of 300 cases of esophageal leiomyoma and 1.3% of 955 cases of superficial ESCC or high-grade dysplasia treated by endoscopic resection. After endoscopic examination and biopsy, ESCC or high-grade dysplasia, combined with leiomyoma was considered in four cases; leiomyoma was considered but without the squamous lesion (underdiagnosis) in another case; and leiomyoma was mistaken for submucosal ESCC (overdiagnosis) in the other seven cases. ESD specimens showed that nine cases were intramucosal or submucosal ESCC, and three cases were high-grade dysplasia, overlying leiomyoma originating from the muscularis mucosae or muscularis propria. The 12 cases were successfully treated by ESD, with no recurrence during follow-up. Conclusions We must keep in mind that ESCC or high-grade dysplasia can occur overlying leiomyoma. These cases are rare but should not be neglected, especially in high-risk areas for ESCC. These patients can receive appropriate treatment if overdiagnosis or underdiagnosis can be avoided.Here, we consider a game-theoretic model of multilevel selection in which individuals compete based on their payoff and groups also compete based on the average payoff of group members. We analyze the dynamics of the two-level replicator dynamics, a nonlocal hyperbolic PDE describing deterministic birth-death dynamics for both individuals and groups. While past work on such multilevel dynamics has restricted attention to scenarios with exactly solvable within-group dynamics, we use comparison principles and an invariant property of the tail of the population distribution to extend our analysis to all possible two-player, two-strategy social dilemmas. In the Stag-Hunt and similar games with coordination thresholds, we show that any amount of between-group competition allows for fixation of cooperation in the population. For the prisoners' dilemma and Hawk-Dove game, we characterize the threshold level of between-group selection dividing a regime in which the population converges to a delta function at the equilibrium of the within-group dynamics from a regime in which between-group competition facilitates the existence of steady-state densities supporting greater levels of cooperation.

In this context, we report in this paper the development of a disposable immunoplatform for the rapid and simultaneous determination of two protein biomarkers recently reported to be involved in the pathological process of neurodegenerative disorders (NDD), tau protein (tau), and TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43). The methodology involves implementation of a sandwich-type immunoassay on the surface of dual screen-printed carbon electrodes (dSPCEs) electrochemically grafted with p-aminobenzoic acid (p-ABA), which allows the covalent immobilization of a gold nanoparticle-poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimer nanocomposite (3D-Au-PAMAM). This scaffold was employed for the immobilization of the capture antibodies (CAbs). Detector antibodies labeled with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and amperometric detection at - 0.20 V (vs. Ag pseudo-reference electrode) using the H2O2/hydroquinone (HQ) system were used. However, the sensitivity and accuracy of the conventional azeotropic distillation (AD) method are inadequate. Karl Fischer titration methods may give false high results because of the reducing sulfur compounds in crude oil. The present study developed an azeotropic distillation Karl Fischer coulometric titration (AD-KFCT) method which required a modified instrument and a new calibration procedure. The method was modified to decrease the interference caused by reducing sulfur compounds. A certified reference material for water content in liquid was used to determine the recovery of water mass achieved using the AD-KFCT method. The effect of the sample polarity on the method accuracy was assessed. The relative error and relative standard deviations of the water content in three crude oils containing known amounts of water were -7.5% to 2.9% and 0.4% to 6.0%, respectively. The interference by reducing sulfur compounds was studied. The crude oil containing 1-propanethiol was measured using a sulfur dioxide-free anolyte, and the amount of iodine consumed by the distilled 1-propanethiol was determined. The contribution of 1-propanethiol was then subtracted from the water content measured using the normal Karl Fischer reagent. Finally, the relative error of the modified water content in the crude oil samples containing 1-propanethiol was -4.4% to 0.7%. Therefore, the modified AD-KFCT method is accurate and convenient for crude oil.Background Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and leiomyoma are common tumors. The coexistence of these two tumors can be classified into two types the overlying type and the separate type. The overlying type is rare. Methods We report 12 cases of the overlying type treated by endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). They underwent pre-ESD endoscopic examination with white-light imaging, iodine staining, narrow-band imaging, endoscopic ultrasound, and biopsy. The clinical, endoscopic and pathologic characteristics were reviewed. Results Among the 12 patients, 3 were female and 9 were male. The age range was 49-76 years. They accounted for 4.0% of 300 cases of esophageal leiomyoma and 1.3% of 955 cases of superficial ESCC or high-grade dysplasia treated by endoscopic resection. After endoscopic examination and biopsy, ESCC or high-grade dysplasia, combined with leiomyoma was considered in four cases; leiomyoma was considered but without the squamous lesion (underdiagnosis) in another case; and leiomyoma was mistaken for submucosal ESCC (overdiagnosis) in the other seven cases. ESD specimens showed that nine cases were intramucosal or submucosal ESCC, and three cases were high-grade dysplasia, overlying leiomyoma originating from the muscularis mucosae or muscularis propria. The 12 cases were successfully treated by ESD, with no recurrence during follow-up. Conclusions We must keep in mind that ESCC or high-grade dysplasia can occur overlying leiomyoma. These cases are rare but should not be neglected, especially in high-risk areas for ESCC. These patients can receive appropriate treatment if overdiagnosis or underdiagnosis can be avoided.Here, we consider a game-theoretic model of multilevel selection in which individuals compete based on their payoff and groups also compete based on the average payoff of group members. Our focus is on multilevel social dilemmas games in which individuals are best off cheating, while groups of individuals do best when composed of many cooperators. We analyze the dynamics of the two-level replicator dynamics, a nonlocal hyperbolic PDE describing deterministic birth-death dynamics for both individuals and groups. While past work on such multilevel dynamics has restricted attention to scenarios with exactly solvable within-group dynamics, we use comparison principles and an invariant property of the tail of the population distribution to extend our analysis to all possible two-player, two-strategy social dilemmas. In the Stag-Hunt and similar games with coordination thresholds, we show that any amount of between-group competition allows for fixation of cooperation in the population. In this paper, a simplified interval type-2 (IT2) fuzzy system is proposed for hysteresis modelling and feedforward control of a piezoelectric actuator. The partial derivative of the output of IT2 fuzzy system with respect to the modelling parameters can be analytically computed with the antecedent part of IT2 fuzzy rule specifically designed. In the experiments, gradient based optimization was used to identify the IT2 fuzzy hysteresis model. Results showed that the maximum error of model identification is 0.42% with only 3 developed IT2 fuzzy rules. Moreover, the model validation was conducted to demonstrate the generalization performance of the identified model. Based on the analytic inverse of the developed model, feedforward control experiment for tracking sinusoidal trajectory of 20 Hz was carried out. As a result, the hysteresis effect of the piezoelectric actuator was reduced with the maximum tracking error being 4.6%. Experimental results indicated an improved performance of the proposed IT2 fuzzy system for hysteresis modelling and feedforward control of the piezoelectric actuator.Fungal infections are rising all over the world every year. In this review of the literature we have summarized the characteristics of echinocandins, the mechanism of their antifungal activity with pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, and the resistance issue.Polyphenols are plant secondary metabolites with diverse biological and potential therapeutic activities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticancer, among others. However, their extraction from the native plants is not enough to satisfy the increasing demand for this type of compounds. The development of microbial cell factories to effectively produce polyphenols may represent the most attractive solution to overcome this limitation and produce high amounts of these bioactive molecules. With the advances in the synthetic biology field, the development of efficient microbial cell factories has become easier, largely due to the development of the molecular biology techniques and by the identification of novel isoenzymes in plants or simpler organisms to construct the heterologous pathways. Furthermore, efforts have been made to make the process more profitable through improvements in the host chassis. In this review, advances in the production of polyphenols by genetically engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae as well as by synthetic biology and metabolic engineering approaches to improve the production of these compounds at industrial settings are discussed.Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease with an unclear pathogenic mechanism. However, it has been proven that the key underlying risk factor is a genetic predisposition. Association studies of the HLA-DRB1 gene clearly indicate its importance in RA morbidity. This review presents the current state of knowledge on the impact of HLA-DRB1 gene, functioning both as a component of the patient's genome and as an environmental risk factor. The impact of known HLA-DRB1 risk variants on the specific structure of the polymorphic HLA-DR molecule, and epitope binding affinity, is presented. The issues of the potential influence of HLA-DRB1 on the occurrence of non-articular disease manifestations and response to treatment are also discussed. A deeper understanding of the role of the HLA-DRB1 gene is essential to explore the complex nature of RA, which is a result of multiple contributing factors, including genetic, epigenetic and environmental factors. It also creates new opportunities to develop modern and personalized forms of therapy.There are growing concerns that poor dietary behaviors at young ages will increase the future risk of chronic diseases in adulthood. We found that female college students who skipped breakfast had higher incidences of dysmenorrhea and irregular menstruation, suggesting that meal skipping affects ovarian and uterine functions. Since dysmenorrhea is more prevalent in those with a past history of dieting, we proposed a novel concept that inadequate dietary habits in adolescence become a trigger for the subsequent development of organic gynecologic diseases. Since inadequate feeding that was limited during the non-active phase impaired reproductive functions in post-adolescent female rats, we hypothesize that circadian rhythm disorders due to breakfast skipping disrupts the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, impairs the reproductive rhythm, and leads to ovarian and uterine dysfunction. To explain how reproductive dysfunction is memorized from adolescence to adulthood, we hypothesize that the peripheral clock system also plays a critical role in the latent progression of reproductive diseases together with the central system, and propose naming this concept "adolescent dietary habit-induced obstetric and gynecologic disease (ADHOGD)". This theory will contribute to analyzing the etiologies of and developing prophylaxes for female reproductive diseases from novel aspects. BACKGROUND Continuous femoral nerve block (FNB) has been effectively used after total hip arthroplasty (THA). Recently the anterior approach to quadratus lumborum block (QLB) has been shown to produce postoperative pain relief after THA. Continuous QLB would benefit from a catheter insertion site that is farther away from the surgical site compared with continuous FNB. In this randomized controlled study, we compared analgesic effects of the two techniques in patients undergoing THA. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/Dihydromyricetin-Ampeloptin.html METHODS Thirty patients undergoing THA were randomly allocated into two groups receiving continuous QLB and FNB. Under ultrasound guidance, QLB and FNB were conducted before general anesthesia using 0.25% levobupivacaine 30 ml and 0.5% levobupivacaine 15 ml, respectively, and a catheter was introduced. Postoperatively, all patients received continuous infusion of 0.125% levobupivacaine at 4 ml/h. Postoperative measurements included visual analog scale (VAS) pain scores at rest and on movement, postoperative analgesic demands, cutaneous sensory blockade and adverse events for 48 h. RESULTS Six patients were excluded and 24 patients (13 and 11 patients in QLB group and FNB, respectively) were analyzed. VAS scores on movement at 6 h [median (IQR) 67 (41-80) and 38 (22-41) in QLB and FNB groups, respectively, p = 0.008] and 24 h [60 (40-80) and 39 (28-64) in QLB and FNB groups, respectively, p = 0.018] were lower with FNB than with QLB. QLB did not produce consistent cutaneous sensory blockade. CONCLUSIONS Analgesic effects of continuous QLB were inferior to those of continuous FNB in patients undergoing THA under the current study condition.PURPOSE This study investigated whether regular precooling would help to maintain day-to-day training intensity and improve 20-km cycling time trial (TT) performed in the heat. Twenty males cycled for 10 day × 60 min at perceived exertion equivalent to 15 in the heat (35 °C, 50% relative humidity), preceded by no cooling (CON, n = 10) or 30-min water immersion at 22 °C (PRECOOL, n = 10). METHODS 19 participants (n = 9 and 10 for CON and PRECOOL, respectively) completed heat stress tests (25-min at 60% [Formula see text] and 20-km TT) before and after heat acclimation. RESULTS Changes in mean power output (∆MPO, P = 0.024) and heart rate (∆HR, P = 0.029) during heat acclimation were lower for CON (∆MPO - 2.6 ± 8.1%, ∆HR - 7 ± 7 bpm), compared with PRECOOL (∆MPO + 2.9 ± 6.6%, ∆HR - 1 ± 8 bpm). HR during constant-paced cycling was decreased from the pre-acclimation test in both groups (P 0.05). MPO (P = 0.016) and finish time (P = 0.013) for the 20-km TT were improved in PRECOOL but did not change in CON (P = 0.052 for MPO, P = 0.140 for finish time). CONCLUSION Precooling maintains day-to-day training intensity and does not appear to attenuate adaptation to training in the heat.PURPOSES This study investigated the impact of permanently tattooed skin on local sweat rate, sweat sodium concentration and skin temperature and determined whether tattoos alter the relationship between local and whole-body sweat sodium concentration. METHODS Thirteen tattooed men (27 ± 6 years) completed a 1 h (66 ± 4% of [Formula see text]) cycling trial at 32 °C, 35% relative humidity. Sweat rate and sweat sodium concentration were measured using the whole-body washdown and local absorbent patch techniques. Patches and skin-temperature probes were applied over the right/left thighs and tattooed/non-tattooed (contralateral) regions. RESULTS Local sweat rates did not differ (p > 0.05) between the right (1.11 ± 0.38) and left (1.21 ± 0.37) thighs and the permanently tattooed (1.93 ± 0.82) and non-tattooed (1.72 ± 0.81 mg cm-2 min-1) regions. There were no differences in local sweat sodium concentration between the right (58.2 ± 19.4) and left (55.4 ± 20.3) thighs and the permanently tattooed (73.0 ± 22.9) and non-tattooed (70.2 ± 18.9 mmol L-1) regions. Difference in local skin temperature between the right and left thighs (- 0.043) was similar to that between the permanently tattooed and non-tattooed (- 0.023 °C) regions. Prediction of whole-body sweat sodium concentration for the permanently tattooed (41.0 ± 6.7) and the non-tattooed (40.2 ± 5.3 mmol L-1) regions did not differ. CONCLUSION Permanent tattoos do not alter local sweat rate, sweat sodium concentration or local skin temperature during moderate-intensity cycling exercise in a warm environment. Results from a patch placed over a tattooed surface correctly predicts whole-body sweat sodium concentration from an equation developed from a non-tattooed region.PURPOSE Classical type of lobular neoplasia (LN) spans a spectrum of disease, including atypical lobular hyperplasia (ALH) and lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS), classical lobular neoplasia (LN), and the three-tiered classification of lobular intraepithelial neoplasia (LIN-1, -2, -3). This study addressed inter-observer variability of classical lobular neoplasias (LN) (B3 lesions) in preoperative breast biopsies among breast and gynecopathologists METHODS A retrospective, observational, cross-sectional study was conducted. 40 preoperative digital images of breast core/vacuum biopsies were analyzed by eight experienced breast- and gynecopathologists. Evaluation criteria were ALH, LCIS, LN classic, LIN-1, LIN-2, LIN-3, focal B3 (one focus), extensive B3 (> one focus). Kappa-index and Chi-square tests were used for statistics. Digital scanned slides were provided to each participant. Agreement between the categories was defined as at least six of eight (cut-off 75%) concordant diagnoses. RESULTS The highest agreement between eight pathologists was reached using the category lobular neoplasia (LN, classical), 26/40 (65%) cases were diagnosed as such. Agreements in other categories was low or poor 12/40 (30%) (ALH), 9/40 (22%) (LCIS), 8/40 (20%) (LIN-1), 8/40 (20%) (focal B3), 3/40 (7.5%) (LIN-2), and 2/40 (5%) (extensive B3). Chi-square-test (classical LN versus the other nomenclatures) was significant (p = 0.001137). CONCLUSION Our data suggest that among Swiss breast pathologists, the most reproducible diagnosis for B3 lobular lesions is the category of classical LN. These data further support lack of consistent data in retrospective studies using different terminologies. Validation of reproducible nomenclature is warranted in further studies. This information is useful especially in view of retro- and prospective data analysis with different diagnostic categories.

METHODS 19 participants (n = 9 and 10 for CON and PRECOOL, respectively) completed heat stress tests (25-min at 60% [Formula see text] and 20-km TT) before and after heat acclimation. RESULTS Changes in mean power output (∆MPO, P = 0.024) and heart rate (∆HR, P = 0.029) during heat acclimation were lower for CON (∆MPO - 2.6 ± 8.1%, ∆HR - 7 ± 7 bpm), compared with PRECOOL (∆MPO + 2.9 ± 6.6%, ∆HR - 1 ± 8 bpm). HR during constant-paced cycling was decreased from the pre-acclimation test in both groups (P 0.05). MPO (P = 0.016) and finish time (P = 0.013) for the 20-km TT were improved in PRECOOL but did not change in CON (P = 0.052 for MPO, P = 0.140 for finish time). CONCLUSION Precooling maintains day-to-day training intensity and does not appear to attenuate adaptation to training in the heat.PURPOSES This study investigated the impact of permanently tattooed skin on local sweat rate, sweat sodium concentration and skin temperature and determined whether tattoos alter the relationship between local and whole-body sweat sodium concentration. METHODS Thirteen tattooed men (27 ± 6 years) completed a 1 h (66 ± 4% of [Formula see text]) cycling trial at 32 °C, 35% relative humidity. Sweat rate and sweat sodium concentration were measured using the whole-body washdown and local absorbent patch techniques. Patches and skin-temperature probes were applied over the right/left thighs and tattooed/non-tattooed (contralateral) regions. RESULTS Local sweat rates did not differ (p > 0.05) between the right (1.11 ± 0.38) and left (1.21 ± 0.37) thighs and the permanently tattooed (1.93 ± 0.82) and non-tattooed (1.72 ± 0.81 mg cm-2 min-1) regions. There were no differences in local sweat sodium concentration between the right (58.2 ± 19.4) and left (55.4 ± 20.3) thighs and the permanently tattooed (73.0 ± 22.9) and non-tattooed (70.2 ± 18.9 mmol L-1) regions. Difference in local skin temperature between the right and left thighs (- 0.043) was similar to that between the permanently tattooed and non-tattooed (- 0.023 °C) regions. Prediction of whole-body sweat sodium concentration for the permanently tattooed (41.0 ± 6.7) and the non-tattooed (40.2 ± 5.3 mmol L-1) regions did not differ. CONCLUSION Permanent tattoos do not alter local sweat rate, sweat sodium concentration or local skin temperature during moderate-intensity cycling exercise in a warm environment. Results from a patch placed over a tattooed surface correctly predicts whole-body sweat sodium concentration from an equation developed from a non-tattooed region.PURPOSE Classical type of lobular neoplasia (LN) spans a spectrum of disease, including atypical lobular hyperplasia (ALH) and lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS), classical lobular neoplasia (LN), and the three-tiered classification of lobular intraepithelial neoplasia (LIN-1, -2, -3). This study addressed inter-observer variability of classical lobular neoplasias (LN) (B3 lesions) in preoperative breast biopsies among breast and gynecopathologists METHODS A retrospective, observational, cross-sectional study was conducted. 40 preoperative digital images of breast core/vacuum biopsies were analyzed by eight experienced breast- and gynecopathologists. Evaluation criteria were ALH, LCIS, LN classic, LIN-1, LIN-2, LIN-3, focal B3 (one focus), extensive B3 (> one focus). Kappa-index and Chi-square tests were used for statistics. Digital scanned slides were provided to each participant. Agreement between the categories was defined as at least six of eight (cut-off 75%) concordant diagnoses. RESULTS The highest agreement between eight pathologists was reached using the category lobular neoplasia (LN, classical), 26/40 (65%) cases were diagnosed as such. Agreements in other categories was low or poor 12/40 (30%) (ALH), 9/40 (22%) (LCIS), 8/40 (20%) (LIN-1), 8/40 (20%) (focal B3), 3/40 (7.5%) (LIN-2), and 2/40 (5%) (extensive B3). Chi-square-test (classical LN versus the other nomenclatures) was significant (p = 0.001137). CONCLUSION Our data suggest that among Swiss breast pathologists, the most reproducible diagnosis for B3 lobular lesions is the category of classical LN. These data further support lack of consistent data in retrospective studies using different terminologies. Validation of reproducible nomenclature is warranted in further studies. We thus highlight CHPF as a novel target for lung cancer treatment.OBJECTIVE To understand, from the family's perspective, the meaning of admitting the child in the hospital with the use of the instructional therapeutic play. METHOD A phenomenological research with 12 families of children aged four to nine years old, recently admitted to a public and teaching hospital, in the inland of the state of São Paulo, from October to December 2016. They participated in an instructional therapeutic play session focusing on the procedures performed at hospital admission weight, height, and vital sign measurements and test collection. The families, in turn, were invited to participate in a phenomenological interview the day after the session. RESULTS The instructional therapeutic play collaborated in the therapeutic procedures by understanding and modifying the child's behavior. Also stressed by the families was the need for the toy to be incorporated as nursing care. CONCLUSION Given the benefits to the child, the family believes that this strategy should be performed as a routine nursing care and, therefore, performed systematically during child hospitalization.OBJECTIVE To establish the prevalence of delirium and its subsyndrome in intensive care and to associate it with the use of sedative and analgesia, severity and mortality. METHOD Carried out in two intensive care units of adult patients, this is a quantitative and transversal study, with 157 patients, using the Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale to assess the level of sedation and the Intensive Care Delirium Screening Checklist for delirium. The T test and Chi-square test were applied for statistical analysis. RESULTS The prevalence of delirium was 22.3%, and 49.7% of the subsyndrome. Associations of the use of midazolam with the presence of delirium (p=0.05) and subsyndromal delirium (p less then 0.01), use of clonidine with the appearance of delirium (p less then 0.01) and of fentanyl with subsyndromal delirium (p=0.09). There were no significant differences between the mortality of patients with delirium (p=0.40) and subsyndromal delirium (p=0.86), as well as association with the mortality score. CONCLUSION The use of sedoanalgesia is associated with the presence of delirium and subsyndromal delirium. RESULTS Two categories emerged Professional practice of the nurse internal and external goods and Moral sensitivity and the interface with the professional practice of nurses. The development of the moral sensitivity of nurses is influenced by factors related to professional practice, such as interpersonal relations, ethical education and management activities. RESULTS Among the 70 participants, depressive symptoms were more frequent among women (p=0.042) and among patients experiencing postoperative agitation (p=0.039) Conclusion In this study, depressive symptoms were associated with being a woman and postoperative agitation; the same was not true in regard to anxiety symptoms.The chess game comprises different domains of cognitive function, demands great concentration and attention and is present in many cultures as an instrument of literacy, learning and entertainment. Seen that, we reviewed the current literature to analyze the influence of chess on cognitive performance, decision-making process, linking to historical neurological and psychiatric disorders as we describe different diseases related to renowned chess players throughout history, discussing the influences of chess on the brain and behavior.Contamination of water sources due to herbicide is of great concern. Clomazone is a pesticide with a high contamination potential which could possibility lixiviate to water streams. Changes caused by residual herbicide include flora modifications which are generally detrimental for some species. The lack of morphological studies performed in aquatic plants exposed to herbicide-contaminated environments has encouraged the development of our research. For the first time, we present a study that aimed to evaluate leaf injuries visible to the naked eye as well as microscopical effects which may be caused by clomazone on Pistia stratiotes. Pistia stratiotes was subjected to five concentrations of clomazone. Our analysis showed leaf injuries, especially after 15 days of clomazone application. Hormesis was observed when the water lettuce was subjected to the lower concentrations. Total leaf area showed increase following by reduction while injured until reaching the highest concentration. Although the concentrations of clomazone tested in our study are not lethal to water lettuce, such herbicide have still caused morphoanatomical damages on leaves which advocates for the use of P.

Background Research on outcomes after ankle fusion focuses on basic activities of daily living, fusion rates, and gait parameters. Little has been reported on the patient's perspective after surgery. The purpose of this study was to determine the change in patient reported physical function and pain interference after ankle fusion surgery to guide patient expectations and improve provider communication. Methods This was a retrospective review of prospectively collected patient reported outcome measurement information system (PROMIS) data in 88 ankle arthrodesis procedures performed from May 2015 to March 2018. The PROMIS Physical function (PF) and pain interference (PI) measures were collected as routine care. Linear mixed models were used to assess differences at each follow-up point for PF and PI. Preoperative to last follow-up in the 120-365 day interval was assessed using analysis of variance. Outcomes included T-scores, z-scores, and PROMIS-Preference (PROPr) utility scores for PF and PI and the percentaore accurate marker of recovery. A decline in function or an increase in pain after 4 months from surgery may help to predict nonunion and other complications after ankle arthrodesis. Level of evidence Level II, prospective single cohort study.Caloric restriction (CR) is widely known to increase life span and resistance to different types of injuries in several organisms. We have previously shown that mitochondria from livers or brains of CR animals exhibit higher calcium uptake rates and lower sensitivity to calcium-induced mitochondrial permeability transition (mPT), an event related to the resilient phenotype exhibited by these organs. Given the importance of calcium in metabolic control and cell homeostasis, we aimed here to uncover possible changes in mitochondrial calcium handling, redox balance and bioenergetics in cardiac and skeletal muscle mitochondria in response to six months of CR. Unexpectedly, we found that CR does not alter the susceptibility to mPT in muscle (cardiac or skeletal), nor calcium uptake rates. Despite the lack in changes in calcium transport properties, CR consistently decreased respiration in the presence of ATP synthesis in heart and soleus muscle. In heart, such changes were accompanied by a decrease in respiration in the absence of ATP synthesis, lower maximal respiratory rates and a reduced rate of hydrogen peroxide release. Hydrogen peroxide release was unaltered by CR in skeletal muscle. No changes were observed in inner membrane potentials and respiratory control ratios. Together, these results highlight the tissue-specific bioenergetic and ion transport effects induced by CR, demonstrating that resilience against calcium-induced mPT is not present in all tissues.Phosphate plays a crucial role in phospholipid metabolism and it is transported by the phosphate (Pi) transporters. The mRNA expressions of genes involved in phospholipid synthesis (CKI1, EKI1, CHO2, and OPI3) were increased due to de-repression of the transcription factors (INO2 and INO4). Neutral lipid levels (triacylglycerol and sterol ester) and their synthesizing genes (LRO1, ARE2, ACC1, and FAS1) were also increased, resulting in lipid droplet accumulation in Pi transporter mutants. Interestingly, phospholipase (PLC1) and histone acetyltransferase genes (ESA1, EAF1, YNG1, YNG2, and GCN5) were also found to be significantly increased, leading to dysregulation of lipid levels in Pi transporter mutants. Results Integrating vascular information from TOF into CISS data reduced artifacts in 3D-visualizations of exclusively processed CISS data. The quality of 3D-visualization of the vessels near the brain stem was significantly improved (p = 0.004). The results were reproducible and reliable. The quality of the 3D-presentations of neurovascular relationships at the VLM improved significantly (p less then 0.001). Conclusion The 3D-visualization of fused image data provides an excellent overview of the relationship between cranial nerves and vessels at the VLM and simplifies the detection of NVC in HTN. It provides a powerful tool for future clinical and scientific research. Although microvascular decompression (MVD) in treatment resistant HTN is not a standard procedure, it can be discussed in selected patients with intractable severe HTN.Objective White matter lesions (WMLs) are the most common central nervous system changes observed during cochlear implant evaluation. However, its clinical significance in cochlear implantation (CI) remains unclear. The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of WMLs on hearing and speech rehabilitation of prelingually deaf children after CI. Methods The data of forty-five children with WMLs who received CI from 2011 to 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. All patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging examination preoperatively. The categories of auditory performance (CAP) and speech intelligibility rating (SIR) scales were used to evaluate changes in the auditory and speech abilities of the patients, and the Fazekas scale was adopted to assess the extent of WMLs. The degree of WMLs was divided into four grades (none, mild, moderate, severe). We assessed hearing and speech abilities at the following time points 6, 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60-months post-operation. Results Integrating vascular information from TOF into CISS data reduced artifacts in 3D-visualizations of exclusively processed CISS data. The quality of 3D-visualization of the vessels near the brain stem was significantly improved (p = 0.004). The results were reproducible and reliable. The quality of the 3D-presentations of neurovascular relationships at the VLM improved significantly (p less then 0.001). Conclusion The 3D-visualization of fused image data provides an excellent overview of the relationship between cranial nerves and vessels at the VLM and simplifies the detection of NVC in HTN. It provides a powerful tool for future clinical and scientific research. Although microvascular decompression (MVD) in treatment resistant HTN is not a standard procedure, it can be discussed in selected patients with intractable severe HTN.Objective White matter lesions (WMLs) are the most common central nervous system changes observed during cochlear implant evaluation. However, its clinical significance in cochlear implantation (CI) remains unclear. The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of WMLs on hearing and speech rehabilitation of prelingually deaf children after CI. Methods The data of forty-five children with WMLs who received CI from 2011 to 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. All patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging examination preoperatively. The categories of auditory performance (CAP) and speech intelligibility rating (SIR) scales were used to evaluate changes in the auditory and speech abilities of the patients, and the Fazekas scale was adopted to assess the extent of WMLs. The degree of WMLs was divided into four grades (none, mild, moderate, severe). We assessed hearing and speech abilities at the following time points 6, 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60-months post-operation.
