  • AIM To evaluate whether the introduction of the 2015 Guidelines for CardiopulmonaryResuscitation were associated with a change in outcomes after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). METHODS Patients with OHCA were divided into adults (≥ 18 years) and pediatric cases ( less then 18 years). An interrupted time-series analysis was used to compare survival before (pre-guidelines January 1st, 2013 and October 31st, 2015) and after (post-guidelines May 1st, 2016 and December 31st, 2018) introduction of the 2015 guidelines. We fitted a regression model after dividing the time-period into segments with separate intercept and slope estimates. RESULTS We included 309,499 adults and 8,668 children with OHCA. There was no difference in the change in survival to hospital discharge with a favorable functional outcome per year between the two periods for adults (slope difference -0.07% [95%CI -0.30 to 0.16], p = 0.55) and pediatric cases (slope difference -0.01% [95%CI -1.35 to 1.32], p = 0.98). Likewise, we found no immediate change in survival to hospital discharge with a favorable functional outcome between the two periods for adults (0.20% (95%CI -0.21 to 0.61], p = 0.33) and pediatric cases (-1.08 [95%CI -3.44 to 1.27], p = 0.37). CONCLUSION Publication of the 2015 Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation was not associated with an increase in survival to hospital discharge with a favorable functional outcome after OHCA. Compared to the genomic basis for adaptation to new environments, genome-wide analysis of deleterious mutations in isolated populations remains limited. In the present study, we investigated the accumulation of deleterious mutations in five endangered freshwater populations of threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) in the central part of the mainland of Japan. Using whole genome resequencing data, we first conducted phylogenomic analysis and confirmed at least two independent freshwater colonization events in the central mainland from ancestral marine ecotypes. Next, analyses of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) showed a substantial reduction of heterozygosity in freshwater populations compared to marine populations. Reduction in heterozygosity was more apparent at the center of each chromosome than the peripheries and on X-chromosomes compared to autosomes. Third, bioinformatic analysis of deleterious mutations showed increased accumulation of putatively deleterious mutations in the landlocked freshwater populations compared to marine populations. For the majority of populations examined, the frequencies of putatively deleterious mutations were higher on X-chromosomes than on autosomes. The inter-population comparison indicated that the majority of putatively deleterious mutations may have accumulated independently. Thus, whole genome resequencing of endangered populations can help to estimate the accumulation of deleterious mutations and inform us of which populations are the most severely endangered. Furthermore, analysis of variation among chromosomes can give insights into whether any particular chromosomes are likely to accumulate deleterious mutations. © The Author(s) 2020. These four tasks are critical for numerous downstream phenotyping goals, such as quantifying plant biomass, performing morphological analyses of plant shapes, and uncovering genotype to phenotype relationships. The P3D tool provides an intuitive graphical user interface, a fast 3D rendering engine for visualizing plants with millions of cloud points, and several graph-theoretic and machine learning algorithms for 3D architecture analyses. It is often first choice for police and military work, as well as protection, disability assistance, and search-and-rescue. Yet, GSDs are well known to be susceptible to a range of genetic diseases that can interfere with their training. Such diseases are of particular concern when they occur later in life, and fully trained animals are not able to continue their duties. FINDINGS Here, we provide the draft genome sequence of a healthy German Shepherd female as a reference for future disease and evolutionary studies. We generated this improved canid reference genome (CanFam_GSD) utilizing a combination of Pacific Bioscience, Oxford Nanopore, 10X Genomics, Bionano, and Hi-C technologies. The GSD assembly is ∼80 times as contiguous as the current canid reference genome (20.9 vs 0.267 Mb contig N50), containing far fewer gaps (306 vs 23,876) and fewer scaffolds (429 vs 3,310) than the current canid reference genome CanFamv3.1. Two chromosomes (4 and 35) are assembled into single scaffolds with no gaps. BUSCO analyses of the genome assembly results show that 93.0% of the conserved single-copy genes are complete in the GSD assembly compared with 92.2% for CanFam v3.1. Homology-based gene annotation increases this value to ∼99%. Detailed examination of the evolutionarily important pancreatic amylase region reveals that there are most likely 7 copies of the gene, indicative of a duplication of 4 ancestral copies and the disruption of 1 copy. CONCLUSIONS GSD genome assembly and annotation were produced with major improvement in completeness, continuity, and quality over the existing canid reference. This resource will enable further research related to canine diseases, the evolutionary relationships of canids, and other aspects of canid biology. © The Author(s) 2020. Proteogenomic data analysis requires integration of disparate 'omic software tools, as well as customized tools to view and interpret results. The flexible Galaxy platform has proven valuable for proteogenomic data analysis. Here, we describe a novel Multi-omics Visualization Platform (MVP) for organizing, visualizing, and exploring proteogenomic results, adding a critically needed tool for data exploration and interpretation. FINDINGS MVP is built as an HTML Galaxy plug-in, primarily based on JavaScript. Via the Galaxy API, MVP uses SQLite databases as input-a custom data type (mzSQLite) containing MS-based peptide identification information, a variant annotation table, and a coding sequence table. Users can interactively filter identified peptides based on sequence and data quality metrics, view annotated peptide MS data, and visualize protein-level information, along with genomic coordinates. Peptides that pass the user-defined thresholds can be sent **** to Galaxy via the API for further analysis; processed data and visualizations can also be saved and shared. MVP leverages the Integrated Genomics Viewer JavaScript framework, enabling interactive visualization of peptides and corresponding transcript and genomic coding information within the MVP interface. CONCLUSIONS MVP provides a powerful, extensible platform for automated, interactive visualization of proteogenomic results within the Galaxy environment, adding a unique and critically needed tool for empowering exploration and interpretation of results. Mat Pilates training (MPT) has gained significant popularity worldwide, yet its effects on vascular function and body composition are understudied. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/azd3229.html We examined the effects of MPT on vascular function and BF in young obese women with elevated blood pressure (BP). METHODS Twenty-eight young obese women with elevated BP were randomized to an MPT (n = 14) or a nonexercising control (CON, n = 14) group for 12 weeks. Systemic arterial stiffness (brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV)), brachial and aortic BP, wave reflection (augmentation index (AIx)), plasma nitric oxide (NO) levels, and BF percentage (BF%) were assessed before and after 12 weeks. RESULTS MPT significantly reduced (P ˂ 0.05) baPWV (-0.7 ± 0.2 m/s), AIx (-4 ± 1%), brachial systolic BP (-5 ± 1 mm Hg), aortic systolic BP (-6 ± 1 mm Hg), and BF% (-2 ± 1%), while significantly increasing plasma NO (6 ± 2 µM) (P ˂ 0.05) compared with CON. MPT improved systemic arterial stiffness, aortic BP, wave reflection, circulating plasma NO, and BF% in young obese women with elevated BP. CONCLUSIONS MPT may be an effective intervention for the improvement of vascular function and BF in young obese women with elevated BP, a population at risk for hypertension and early vascular complications.   • Background Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic, autoimmune and multisystemic disease. Recent studies with functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging and cognitive tests report an unexpectedly high frequency of central nervous system involvement, even in patients with asymptomatic SLE. The purpose of this study was to identify early signs of retinal neurodegeneration by comparing the thickness of the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) and all macular layers between patients with SLE without ophthalmologic manifestations and healthy controls. The effect of disease duration and systemic comorbidities was also studied. Methods Cross-sectional study, in which all participants underwent a complete ophthalmologic evaluation including retinal segmentation analysis with spectral domain-optical coherence tomography. Patients with SLE also received a detailed autoimmune disease specialist evaluation to assess the disease activity state and systemic involvement. For pRNFL thickness, the associated with greater photoreceptor thinning in all ETDRS subfields. Neuropsychiatric SLE, higher disease activity and cardiovascular risk factors were associated with a thinner photoreceptor layer. No differences were observed in overall retinal thickness or the remaining macular layers. Conclusion Patients with SLE present early signs of retinal neurodegeneration, as evidenced by a reduction in the photoreceptor layer and pRNFL. These signs are more pronounced in patients with higher cardiovascular risk burden or neuropsychiatric involvement. © The Author(s) 2020.Purpose To evaluate the effect of scleral buckling on accommodative amplitude. Design Non-randomized, prospective, double masked clinical trial in which the fellow eye of patients undergoing scleral buckling served as a control. Methods Patients who underwent scleral bucking for the management of retinal detachment in at least one eye were enrolled. Accommodative amplitude was measured monocularly 1 month and 3 months post operatively by two masked optometrists using a near-point "push" technique and minus-to-blur technique. Accommodative amplitude in eyes that underwent scleral buckle surgery were compared to their fellow eyes. Buckle type, buckle location, lens status and age were analyzed. Generalized Estimation Equations (GEE) were used to compare means and percentages between two groups. Results Seventy-four eyes of 37 patients were included in the study. Median age was 44 years old (range 31-67 years old) and 68.4% of patients were male (n = 24). Two patients required bilateral surgery. We trained case managers to assess participants and match them to six-week work placements in the Midlands and provide ongoing support to them and their managers. Participants attended a two-day work preparation session prior to placement. Outcome measures included quality of life at baseline, six- weeks, 14-weeks, and six-months, and return to work at 14-weeks and six-months. We held focus groups or interviews with stakeholders to examine acceptability d availability of a sufficiently wide range of work placements in each area, multiple partners would be needed. Multiple recruitment sites and focus on employment services will yield better recruitment rates than reliance on NHS pain clinics.     Background Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic, autoimmune and multisystemic disease. Recent studies with functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging and cognitive tests report an unexpectedly high frequency of central nervous system involvement, even in patients with asymptomatic SLE. The purpose of this study was to identify early signs of retinal neurodegeneration by comparing the thickness of the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) and all macular layers between patients with SLE without ophthalmologic manifestations and healthy controls. The effect of disease duration and systemic comorbidities was also studied. Methods Cross-sectional study, in which all participants underwent a complete ophthalmologic evaluation including retinal segmentation analysis with spectral domain-optical coherence tomography. Patients with SLE also received a detailed autoimmune disease specialist evaluation to assess the disease activity state and systemic involvement. For pRNFL thickness, the associated with greater photoreceptor thinning in all ETDRS subfields. Neuropsychiatric SLE, higher disease activity and cardiovascular risk factors were associated with a thinner photoreceptor layer. No differences were observed in overall retinal thickness or the remaining macular layers. Conclusion Patients with SLE present early signs of retinal neurodegeneration, as evidenced by a reduction in the photoreceptor layer and pRNFL. These signs are more pronounced in patients with higher cardiovascular risk burden or neuropsychiatric involvement. © The Author(s) 2020.Purpose To evaluate the effect of scleral buckling on accommodative amplitude. Design Non-randomized, prospective, double masked clinical trial in which the fellow eye of patients undergoing scleral buckling served as a control. Methods Patients who underwent scleral bucking for the management of retinal detachment in at least one eye were enrolled. Accommodative amplitude was measured monocularly 1 month and 3 months post operatively by two masked optometrists using a near-point "push" technique and minus-to-blur technique. Accommodative amplitude in eyes that underwent scleral buckle surgery were compared to their fellow eyes. Buckle type, buckle location, lens status and age were analyzed. Generalized Estimation Equations (GEE) were used to compare means and percentages between two groups. Results Seventy-four eyes of 37 patients were included in the study. Median age was 44 years old (range 31-67 years old) and 68.4% of patients were male (n = 24). Two patients required bilateral surgery. The current diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) study explored ipsilateral and contralateral alterations in the anterior SVZ in GBM patients with posterior enhancing lesions following chemoradiation. METHODS Forty GBM patients with tumor involvement in the posterior SVZ (mean age = 57 ± 10; left-hemisphere N = 25; right-hemisphere N = 15) were evaluated using DWI before and after chemoradiation. Regions-of-interest were drawn on the ipsilesional and contralesional anterior SVZ on apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps for both timepoints. ADC histogram analysis was performed by modeling a bimodal, double Gaussian distribution to obtain ADCL, defined as the mean of the lower Gaussian distribution. Approximately 45% of patients with GBM carry EGFR mutations, and 13% of them possess altered PDGFR genes. Moreover, VEGF/VEGFR mutations are also observed in the patient population. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) are emerging cancer therapy drugs that inhibit signal transduction cascades affecting cell proliferation, migration, and angiogenesis. Indications for small molecule TKIs have been successfully expanded to multiple types of cancer; however, none of the TKIs have been approved for patients with GBM. In this review, we summarize clinical trials of small molecule TKIs in patients with GBM and plausible hypotheses for negative clinical study results. We also discuss the potential TKI candidates that presented significant preclinical outcomes in patients with GBM.PURPOSE Immunosuppressed (IS) patients are at increased risk for developing Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) with worsened outcomes compared to immunocompetent (IC) patients. We sought to determine the effects of immune status on the efficacy of adjuvant RT regarding OS for patients with stage I, II or III (localized) ****of the head and neck. METHODS/PATIENTS The National Cancer Database was queried for patients with resected, localized ****of the head and neck with known immune status. Kaplan-Meier methods were used to describe OS. Log-rank tests, multivariable Cox regression models and interaction effect testing were used to compare OS by subgroup categorized by patient and treatment factors including immune status and adjuvant RT receipt. RESULTS A total of 892 (89.6%) IC and 104 (10.4%) IS patients with ****of the head and neck were included. Adjuvant RT was associated with improved 3-year OS rate for both IS patients (49.4% vs. 35.5%, p = 0.0467) and stage I/II IC patients (72.4% vs. 62.9%, p = 0.0092). Adjuvant RT was associated with decreased hazard of death (HR 0.77, 95% CI 0.62-0.95). Interaction effect testing did not demonstrate a difference in the efficacy of adjuvant RT on OS between IC and IS status (p = 0.157). CONCLUSIONS In this NCDB analysis, adjuvant RT was associated with decreased hazard of death for patients with localized ****of the head and neck regardless of immune status and should be considered for both IS and IC patients.PURPOSE Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have participated in progression of colorectal cancer. The qRT-PCR was used to determine expression of lncRNA RNCR3, miR-1301-3p, and AKT1. Both dual-luciferase reporter assay and ChIP assay were conducted to investigate the binding sites of RUNX1 on RNCR3 promoter. Western blot was performed to analyze expression of AKT1 protein. Both dual-luciferase reporter assay and RIP assay were performed to detect the interacting sites between RNCR3 and miR-1301-3p. The CCK-8 assay, soft agar assay, transwell assay, and annexin-V-FITC/PI staining were applied to analyze the cell growth, invasion, and apoptosis, respectively. RESULTS The data demonstrated that RNCR3 was elevated in colorectal cancer, and it was negatively correlated with expression of miR-1301-3p which was decreased in cancers. Then, RNCR3 could interact with and suppress miR-1301-3p expression in HCT116 and SW480. Knockdown of RNCR3 or miR-1301-3p overexpression significantly inhibited cell growth, invasion, and increased apoptosis through suppressing expression of Cyclin A1, PCNA, N-cadherin, Bcl-2, and promoting expression of E-cadherin, Bax in vitro and in vivo. RUNX1 was directly bound to RNCR3 promoter to activate RNCR3 expression. Furthermore, overexpression of RNCR3 blocked tumor inhibitory effects of miR-1301-3p on proliferation, colony formation, invasion, and apoptosis in vitro and in vivo. Additionally, RNCR3 and miR-1301-3p synergistically modulated AKT1 expression. CONCLUSION RUNX1-activated upregulation of RNCR3 promoted colorectal cancer progression by sponging miR-1301-3p to elevate AKT1 levels in vitro and in vivo.

  • Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is gaining interest in intensive care medicine and good reviews and guidelines on POCUS are available. Unfortunately, how to implement POCUS and practical examples how to train staff and junior doctors is not well described in literature. We discuss the process of POCUS implementation, and a POCUS training program for residents prior to their intensive care rotation in a Dutch teaching hospital intensive care unit. The described four-day basic POCUS course consists of short tutorials and ample time for hands-on practice. Our hospital lies at the epicentre of the Belgian epidemic. On April 1st, a total of 235 Covid-19 patients had been admitted to our hospital. This demanded an unprecedented adaptation of our hospital organisation, and we have met many clinical issues in the care for Covid-19 patients. In this article, we share our experience in the handling of some of the practical and organisational issues in the care for Covid-19 patients.Anaemia is a common diagnosis for clinicians. This mini-review summarises criteria for diagnosing the cause of anaemia. Within the microcytic anaemias, iron-deficient anaemia is most common. In addition, we would like to raise awareness of thalassaemia as a differential diagnosis. A normocytic anaemia, such as anaemia of chronic disease, is a diagnosis of exclusion. A macrocytic anaemia scheme is provided and differentiates based on reticulocyte count. We aim to provide the readers a clear overview of anaemia and when to refer to haematologists.Decision-making in older persons with end-stagebkidney disease (ESKD) regarding dialysis initiation is highly complex. While some older persons improve with dialysis and maintain a good quality of life, others experience less benefit and multiple complications due to a high morbidity burden and (early) mortality. Geriatric impairments are highly prevalent among this population and these impairments may complicate the care of an older person with ESKD. Knowledge of these impairments can potentially help improve care and decision-making regarding dialysis initiation and advance care planning. Therefore, the aim of this review is to give healthcare providers an insight into the existing literature on geriatric impairments in older persons with ESKD. Furthermore, specific areas of concern will be discussed, in combination with some practical advice.Decreased bone mineral density (BMD) in oestrogendeficient states has long been thought to be a direct outcome of the reduction in oestrogen. In physiologic and many pathologic hypo-oestrogenic states, oestrogen supplementation improves BMD. However, the relationship between oestrogen replacement and BMD is less clear in the case of reproductive axis dysfunction secondary to decreased caloric intake or increased energy expenditure, such as in female athletes or anorexia nervosa. This decrease in oestrogen is associated with decreased BMD, but oestrogen replacement in these states fails to conclusively improve BMD. This suggests that the decrease in BMD in these states is not driven solely by low oestrogen. Cortisol and other markers of inflammation may play a role in BMD reduction but further research is needed. What is clear is that increased caloric consumption and restoration of menses and the reproductive axis are essential to improving BMD, while pharmacologic therapy, including oestrogen replacement through hormone therapy or contraceptives, does not provide conclusive benefit.INTRODUCTION Despite the availability of several guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis (AAV), clinical routine practice will only improve when an implementation strategy is in place to support clinical decision making and adequate implementation of guidelines. We describe here an initiative to establish national and multidisciplinary consensus on broad aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of AAV relevant to daily clinical practice in the Netherlands. METHODS A multidisciplinary working group of physicians in the Netherlands with expertise on AAV addressed the broad spectrum of diagnosis, terminology, and immunosuppressive and non-immunosuppressive treatment, including an algorithm for AAV patients. Based on recommendations from (inter)national guidelines, national consensus was established using a Delphi-based method during a conference in conjunction with a nationally distributed online consensus survey. Cut-off for consensus was 70% (dis)agreement. RESULTS Ninety-eight professionals were involved in the Delphi procedure to assess consensus on 50 statements regarding diagnosis, treatment, and organisation of care for AAV patients. Consensus was achieved for 37/50 statements (74%) in different domains of diagnosis and treatment of AAV including consensus on the treatment algorithm for AAV. CONCLUSION We present a national, multidisciplinary consensus on a diagnostic strategy and treatment algorithm for AAV patients as part of the implementation of (inter)national guideline-derived recommendations in the Netherlands. Future studies will focus on evaluating local implementation of treatment protocols for AAV, and assessments of current and future clinical practice variation in the care for AAV patients in the Netherlands.BACKGROUND Hyperactive thyroid nodules (HTN) are usually treated with radioactive iodine (RAI). PATIENTS AND METHODS Patients with a symptomatic HTN were treated by ultrasound-guided RFA, using the trans-isthmic approach and moving-shot technique, in an outpatient setting under local anaesthesia. RESULTS Twenty-one patients were included, ranging in age from 37-75 years. Follow-up was at least one year. All patients had a suppressed serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), with free thyroxine (FT4) and free triiodothyronine (FT3) concentrations mildly elevated in 33% and 43% of cases, respectively. RFA was not associated with clinically meaningful adverse effects. TSH normalisation was achieved in 11/21 patients (52%) after first RFA. A partial response, defined as a normalisation of FT4 and FT3, but incomplete improvement of TSH, was observed in 6/21 patients (29%).
    Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is gaining interest in intensive care medicine and good reviews and guidelines on POCUS are available. Unfortunately, how to implement POCUS and practical examples how to train staff and junior doctors is not well described in literature. We discuss the process of POCUS implementation, and a POCUS training program for residents prior to their intensive care rotation in a Dutch teaching hospital intensive care unit. The described four-day basic POCUS course consists of short tutorials and ample time for hands-on practice. Our hospital lies at the epicentre of the Belgian epidemic. On April 1st, a total of 235 Covid-19 patients had been admitted to our hospital. This demanded an unprecedented adaptation of our hospital organisation, and we have met many clinical issues in the care for Covid-19 patients. This mini-review summarises criteria for diagnosing the cause of anaemia. Within the microcytic anaemias, iron-deficient anaemia is most common. In addition, we would like to raise awareness of thalassaemia as a differential diagnosis. A normocytic anaemia, such as anaemia of chronic disease, is a diagnosis of exclusion. A macrocytic anaemia scheme is provided and differentiates based on reticulocyte count. We aim to provide the readers a clear overview of anaemia and when to refer to haematologists.Decision-making in older persons with end-stagebkidney disease (ESKD) regarding dialysis initiation is highly complex. While some older persons improve with dialysis and maintain a good quality of life, others experience less benefit and multiple complications due to a high morbidity burden and (early) mortality. Geriatric impairments are highly prevalent among this population and these impairments may complicate the care of an older person with ESKD. Knowledge of these impairments can potentially help improve care and decision-making regarding dialysis initiation and advance care planning. Therefore, the aim of this review is to give healthcare providers an insight into the existing literature on geriatric impairments in older persons with ESKD. Furthermore, specific areas of concern will be discussed, in combination with some practical advice.Decreased bone mineral density (BMD) in oestrogendeficient states has long been thought to be a direct outcome of the reduction in oestrogen. In physiologic and many pathologic hypo-oestrogenic states, oestrogen supplementation improves BMD. However, the relationship between oestrogen replacement and BMD is less clear in the case of reproductive axis dysfunction secondary to decreased caloric intake or increased energy expenditure, such as in female athletes or anorexia nervosa. This decrease in oestrogen is associated with decreased BMD, but oestrogen replacement in these states fails to conclusively improve BMD. This suggests that the decrease in BMD in these states is not driven solely by low oestrogen. Cortisol and other markers of inflammation may play a role in BMD reduction but further research is needed. What is clear is that increased caloric consumption and restoration of menses and the reproductive axis are essential to improving BMD, while pharmacologic therapy, including oestrogen replacement through hormone therapy or contraceptives, does not provide conclusive benefit.INTRODUCTION Despite the availability of several guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis (AAV), clinical routine practice will only improve when an implementation strategy is in place to support clinical decision making and adequate implementation of guidelines. We describe here an initiative to establish national and multidisciplinary consensus on broad aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of AAV relevant to daily clinical practice in the Netherlands. METHODS A multidisciplinary working group of physicians in the Netherlands with expertise on AAV addressed the broad spectrum of diagnosis, terminology, and immunosuppressive and non-immunosuppressive treatment, including an algorithm for AAV patients. Based on recommendations from (inter)national guidelines, national consensus was established using a Delphi-based method during a conference in conjunction with a nationally distributed online consensus survey. Cut-off for consensus was 70% (dis)agreement. RESULTS Ninety-eight professionals were involved in the Delphi procedure to assess consensus on 50 statements regarding diagnosis, treatment, and organisation of care for AAV patients. Consensus was achieved for 37/50 statements (74%) in different domains of diagnosis and treatment of AAV including consensus on the treatment algorithm for AAV. CONCLUSION We present a national, multidisciplinary consensus on a diagnostic strategy and treatment algorithm for AAV patients as part of the implementation of (inter)national guideline-derived recommendations in the Netherlands. Future studies will focus on evaluating local implementation of treatment protocols for AAV, and assessments of current and future clinical practice variation in the care for AAV patients in the Netherlands.BACKGROUND Hyperactive thyroid nodules (HTN) are usually treated with radioactive iodine (RAI). In the present paper, we propose a novel method to achieve the same reduction effect of unnecessary signals with a smaller computational load than that of the conventional GCF approach. METHODS One of the factors increasing the computational complexity of the GCF-based beamformer compared with DAS is the generation of analytic signals at receiving elements. We clarified the mechanism of generating unnecessary signal components to enable the calculation of the GCF value directly from real signals without generating analytic signals. Furthermore, we proposed a method to filter out these components without generating analytic signals. RESULTS The GCF values obtained using the proposed and conventional methods were compared and verified using the actual data acquired from a phantom with an ultrasound diagnostic system. We also compared the B-mode images. As a result, equivalent GCF values and similar B-mode image quality were achieved with the proposed method with reduced computational complexity. CONCLUSION With the proposed method, generation of analytic signals at receiving elements can be omitted, and as a result, the computational load of the GCF method can be greatly reduced, while preserving the effect of reducing unnecessary signals like with the conventional method.The paper carries on our previous investigations on the complementary version of Purcell's rotator (sPr3) a low-Reynolds-number swimmer composed of three ***** of equal radii. According to Berger-Sanai classification, the gross total resection rates of different types of insular gliomas were as follows Zone I (90.1%), zone II (50.0%), zone III (40.0%), zone IV (89.5%), zone I + II (43.5%), zone I + IV (74.6%), zone II + III (44.4%), zone III + IV (41.7%), Giant (34.5%). Two bean cultivars (BRS Estilo and Campos Gerais) were grown in three soil conditions (I) soil liming with calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2 and Al unavailable (-Al+Ca); (II) fertilized soil with calcium nitrate [Ca(NO3)2·4H2O] and Al available (+Al+Ca); and (III) soil without Ca addition and Al available (+Al-Ca). At the beginning of the reproductive stage, we evaluated the photosynthetic processes, mineral nutrition, and leaf anatomy and morphological traits of plants. The photosynthetic parameters were good tools for monitor Al sensitivity in bean. +Al+Ca soil treatment mitigated the deleterious effects of Al on growth and mineral nutrition of both bean cultivars. However, Ca did not prevent the toxic effects of Al on leaf anatomy. Al stress and Ca deficiency caused negative effects on nutrient content, photosynthetic activity and leaf anatomy of bean plants. The formed zwitterion-modified G5 dendrimers were characterized using NMR techniques. This study explored reducing the concentration of nutrients in the current formulation and/or incorporating new components to improve the host bacterial growth and/or the enumeration of somatic coliphages at an affordable analytical cost.   • We deem a computer to exhibit artificial intelligence (AI) when it performs a task that would normally require intelligent action by a human. **** of the recent excitement about AI in the medical literature has revolved around the ability of AI models to recognize anatomy and detect pathology on medical images, sometimes at the level of expert physicians. However, AI can also be used to solve a wide range of noninterpretive problems that are relevant to radiologists and their patients. This review summarizes some of the newer noninterpretive uses of AI in radiology. PURPOSE To evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) between Y-TZP and a resin luting agent, after 1 of 2 enhancing strategies with TiO2--nts was applied, either to the resin luting agent or the Y-TZP mass, in different concentrations. METHODS In the Strategy TiO2-nts on ceramic, the resin luting agent Panavia F2.0™ (Kuraray) and an experimental Y-TZP with added concentrations of TiO2--nts (0%, 1%, 2%, and 5% vol/vol) and a commercial Y-TZP, comprised 5 different groups (n = 10). In the Strategy TiO2-nts on cement, the resin luting agent RelyX U200™ (3 M ESPE) was added with different concentrations of TiO2--nts (0%, 0.3%, 0.6%, 0.9% wt/wt) luted to a commercial Y-TZP, comprising 4 different groups (n = 10). The Y-TZP discs were included in acrylic bases, and a cylinder (3 × 3 mm) of the correspondent luting agent for each respective group was applied over them. After 24 h, specimens were subjected to SBS assessments in a universal testing machine. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses were also performed on Y-TZP surfaces. Data were analyzed via analysis of variance and Tukey tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS TiO2-nts on ceramic influenced the bond strength significantly, but not linearly; TiO2-nts on cement did not influence bond strength when analyzed separately, nor in comparison with the first. CONCLUSION Y-TZP enhancements with TiO2-nts led to a higher SBS with Panavia F2.0, a 5% TiO2--nt concentration presented the highest bond strength. Modified Rely X U200 did not improve SBS. PURPOSE The purpose of this investigation was to compare clinical outcomes of knee anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) autograft reconstruction using all-inside quadrupled semitendinosus (AIST) versus bone-patellar tendon-bone (BPTB) in a high-risk athletic population 24 years or younger. METHODS Skeletally mature candidates younger than 24 years old with an ACL tear were randomized into either the AIST (n=32) or BPTB (n=32) group and were followed for two years. Although a diverse group of conditions, many Mendelian eye conditions are early-onset, untreatable, progressive, and result in significant visual disability. To increase understanding of the challenges facing this population, we review studies describing the psychosocial impacts of Mendelian eye conditions. Reduced mental health and quality of life, and increased strain on relationships are common themes. We synthesize the evidence presented in this review to propose an overall model of illness factors, cultural factors, psychosocial impacts, and quality of life. Finally, we discuss implications for patient management and future research directions. Published by Elsevier Inc.AIM The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the modified extracorporeal circulation perfusion method during surgery for acute Stanford type A aortic dissection in patients who underwent stented elephant trunk implantation and arch replacement. METHOD A total of 69 patients with acute Stanford type A aortic dissection who underwent stented elephant trunk implantation and arch replacement were retrospectively analysed from 2017 to 2018. According to the perfusion method of extracorporeal circulation, patients were divided into a routine perfusion (RP) group and a modified perfusion (MP) group. Clinical data were collected, including the time of extracorporeal circulation and deep hypothermic circulatory arrest, incidence of acute kidney injury and neurological complications, and comparisons between the two groups were conducted by using independent sample t-tests for normally distributed qualitative data, the Mann-Whitney U-test for skewed qualitative data, and the chi square test or Fisher's exact test for categorical data. RESULTS There were 55 (80%) males and 14 (20%) females in the entire cohort, and the mean ± standard deviation age was 50.4±9.0 years. A total of 53 (77%) patients were included in the RP group, and 16 (23%) were included in the MP group. Patients in the MP group were older (55.5±7.8 vs 48.8±8.9 years), and the difference was significant (p=0.008). Compared with the RP group, the time of extracorporeal circulation (218.0 [44.7] vs 246.0 [58.0] min; p=0.005) and deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (4.0 [2.0] vs 25.0 [10.0] min; p less then 0.001) was shorter, and the incidence of postoperative acute kidney injury (n=6 [37.5%] vs n=36 [67.9%]; p=0.029) was lower in the MP group; the differences were significant. Six (6) patients died in the RP group; no patients died in the MP group. The total in-hospital mortality rate was 8.7%. CONCLUSIONS The modified extracorporeal circulation perfusion method is feasible, with satisfactory results. Nudix proteins are members of a large family of homologous enzymes that hydrolyze nucleoside diphosphates linked to other compounds. The substrates for a subset of Nudix enzymes are all nucleotides linked to RNA, like the m7G mRNA caps and the more recently discovered NAD(H) RNA caps. However, the RNA affinity and nucleic acid specificity of Nudix proteins has not yet been explored in depth. In this study we designed new fluorescence-based assays to examine the interaction of purified recombinant E. coli NudC and human Nudt1 (aka MTH1) Nudt3, Nudt12, Nudt16, and Nudt20 (aka Dcp2). All Nudix proteins except Nudt1 and Nudt12 bound both RNA and DNA stoichiometrically with high affinity (dissociation constants in the nanomolar range) and no clear sequence specificity. In stark contrast, Nudt12 binds RNA but not similar DNA oligonucleotides. Nudt12 also bound RNAs with 5' NAD+ caps more tightly than those with NADH or m7G cap. NudC was similarly selective against m7G caps but did not differentiate between NAD+ and NADH capped RNA.

Much of the recent excitement about AI in the medical literature has revolved around the ability of AI models to recognize anatomy and detect pathology on medical images, sometimes at the level of expert physicians. However, AI can also be used to solve a wide range of noninterpretive problems that are relevant to radiologists and their patients. This review summarizes some of the newer noninterpretive uses of AI in radiology. PURPOSE To evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) between Y-TZP and a resin luting agent, after 1 of 2 enhancing strategies with TiO2--nts was applied, either to the resin luting agent or the Y-TZP mass, in different concentrations. METHODS In the Strategy TiO2-nts on ceramic, the resin luting agent Panavia F2.0™ (Kuraray) and an experimental Y-TZP with added concentrations of TiO2--nts (0%, 1%, 2%, and 5% vol/vol) and a commercial Y-TZP, comprised 5 different groups (n = 10). In the Strategy TiO2-nts on cement, the resin luting agent RelyX U200™ (3 M ESPE) was added with different concentrations of TiO2--nts (0%, 0.3%, 0.6%, 0.9% wt/wt) luted to a commercial Y-TZP, comprising 4 different groups (n = 10). The Y-TZP discs were included in acrylic bases, and a cylinder (3 × 3 mm) of the correspondent luting agent for each respective group was applied over them. After 24 h, specimens were subjected to SBS assessments in a universal testing machine. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses were also performed on Y-TZP surfaces. Data were analyzed via analysis of variance and Tukey tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS TiO2-nts on ceramic influenced the bond strength significantly, but not linearly; TiO2-nts on cement did not influence bond strength when analyzed separately, nor in comparison with the first. CONCLUSION Y-TZP enhancements with TiO2-nts led to a higher SBS with Panavia F2.0, a 5% TiO2--nt concentration presented the highest bond strength. Modified Rely X U200 did not improve SBS. PURPOSE The purpose of this investigation was to compare clinical outcomes of knee anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) autograft reconstruction using all-inside quadrupled semitendinosus (AIST) versus bone-patellar tendon-bone (BPTB) in a high-risk athletic population 24 years or younger. METHODS Skeletally mature candidates younger than 24 years old with an ACL tear were randomized into either the AIST (n=32) or BPTB (n=32) group and were followed for two years. Although a diverse group of conditions, many Mendelian eye conditions are early-onset, untreatable, progressive, and result in significant visual disability. To increase understanding of the challenges facing this population, we review studies describing the psychosocial impacts of Mendelian eye conditions. Reduced mental health and quality of life, and increased strain on relationships are common themes. We synthesize the evidence presented in this review to propose an overall model of illness factors, cultural factors, psychosocial impacts, and quality of life. Finally, we discuss implications for patient management and future research directions. Published by Elsevier Inc.AIM The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the modified extracorporeal circulation perfusion method during surgery for acute Stanford type A aortic dissection in patients who underwent stented elephant trunk implantation and arch replacement. METHOD A total of 69 patients with acute Stanford type A aortic dissection who underwent stented elephant trunk implantation and arch replacement were retrospectively analysed from 2017 to 2018. According to the perfusion method of extracorporeal circulation, patients were divided into a routine perfusion (RP) group and a modified perfusion (MP) group. Clinical data were collected, including the time of extracorporeal circulation and deep hypothermic circulatory arrest, incidence of acute kidney injury and neurological complications, and comparisons between the two groups were conducted by using independent sample t-tests for normally distributed qualitative data, the Mann-Whitney U-test for skewed qualitative data, and the chi square test or Fisher's exact test for categorical data. RESULTS There were 55 (80%) males and 14 (20%) females in the entire cohort, and the mean ± standard deviation age was 50.4±9.0 years. A total of 53 (77%) patients were included in the RP group, and 16 (23%) were included in the MP group. Patients in the MP group were older (55.5±7.8 vs 48.8±8.9 years), and the difference was significant (p=0.008). Compared with the RP group, the time of extracorporeal circulation (218.0 [44.7] vs 246.0 [58.0] min; p=0.005) and deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (4.0 [2.0] vs 25.0 [10.0] min; p less then 0.001) was shorter, and the incidence of postoperative acute kidney injury (n=6 [37.5%] vs n=36 [67.9%]; p=0.029) was lower in the MP group; the differences were significant. Six (6) patients died in the RP group; no patients died in the MP group. The total in-hospital mortality rate was 8.7%. CONCLUSIONS The modified extracorporeal circulation perfusion method is feasible, with satisfactory results. Nudix proteins are members of a large family of homologous enzymes that hydrolyze nucleoside diphosphates linked to other compounds. The substrates for a subset of Nudix enzymes are all nucleotides linked to RNA, like the m7G mRNA caps and the more recently discovered NAD(H) RNA caps. However, the RNA affinity and nucleic acid specificity of Nudix proteins has not yet been explored in depth. In this study we designed new fluorescence-based assays to examine the interaction of purified recombinant E. coli NudC and human Nudt1 (aka MTH1) Nudt3, Nudt12, Nudt16, and Nudt20 (aka Dcp2). All Nudix proteins except Nudt1 and Nudt12 bound both RNA and DNA stoichiometrically with high affinity (dissociation constants in the nanomolar range) and no clear sequence specificity. In stark contrast, Nudt12 binds RNA but not similar DNA oligonucleotides. Nudt12 also bound RNAs with 5' NAD+ caps more tightly than those with NADH or m7G cap. NudC was similarly selective against m7G caps but did not differentiate between NAD+ and NADH capped RNA.

  • Excessive tool wear during hard and brittle material processing severely influences cutting performance. As one of the advanced machining technologies, vibration-assisted micro milling adds high-frequency small amplitude vibration on a micro milling tool or workpiece to improve cutting performance, especially for hard and brittle materials. In this paper, the tool wear suppression mechanism in non-resonant vibration-assisted micro milling is studied by using both finite element simulation and experiment methods. A finite element model of vibration-assisted micro milling using ABAQUS is developed based on the Johnson cook material and damage models. The tool-workpiece separation conditions are studied by considering the tool tip trajectories. The machining experiments are carried out on Ti-6Al-4V with a coated micro milling tool (fine-grain tungsten carbide substrate with ZrO2-BaCrO4 (ZB) coating) under different vibration frequencies (high, medium, and low) and cutting states (tool-workpiece separation or non-separation). The results show that tool wear can be reduced effectively in vibration-assisted micro milling due to different wear suppression mechanisms. The relationship between tool wear and cutting performance is studied, and the results indicate that besides tool wear reduction, better surface finish, lower burrs, and smaller chips can also be obtained as vibration assistance is added.The use of biopolymers can reduce the environmental impact generated by plastic materials. Among biopolymers, blends made of poly(lactide) (PLA) and poly(butylene-adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) prove to have adequate performances for food packaging applications. Therefore, the present work deals with the production and the characterization of blown films based on PLA and PBAT blends in a wide range of compositions, in order to evaluate their suitability as chilled and frozen food packaging materials, thus extending their range of applications. The blends were fully characterized they showed the typical two-phase structure, with a morphology varying from fibrillar to globular in accordance with their viscosity ratio. The increase of PBAT content in the blends led to a decrease of the barrier properties to oxygen and water vapor, and to an increase of the toughness of the films. The mechanical properties of the most ductile blends were also evaluated at 4 °C and -25 °C. The decrease in temperature caused an increase of the stiffness and a decrease of the ductility of the films to a different extent, depending upon the blend composition. The blend with 40% of PLA revealed to be a good candidate for chilled food packaging applications, while the blend with a PLA content of 20% revealed to be the best composition as frozen food packaging material.There is a need to improve the effectiveness of radiotherapy (RT) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the efficacy and toxicity of the anti-microtubule agent Vinorelbine as a radiosensitizer in HCC. The radio sensitivity of 16 HCC patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models was determined by quantifying the survival fraction following irradiation in vitro, and Vinorelbine radio sensitization was determined by clonogenic assay. Ectopic HCC xenografts were treated with a single dose of 8 Gy irradiation and twice-weekly 3 mg/kg Vinorelbine. Tumor growth and changes in the proteins involved in DNA repair, angiogenesis, tumor cell proliferation, and survival were assessed, and the 3/16 (18.75%), 7/16 (43.75%), and 6/16 (37.5%) HCC lines were classified as sensitive, moderately sensitive, and resistant, respectively. The combination of RT and Vinorelbine significantly inhibited tumor growth, DNA repair proteins, angiogenesis, and cell proliferation, and promoted more apoptosis compared with RT or Vinorelbine treatment alone. Vinorelbine improved HCC tumor response to standard irradiation with no increase in toxicity. Litchi fruit pulp were dried at 70 °C with an air velocity of 1.8 m/s; the drying intermittent profiles were as follows (1) 20 min drying-on and 5 min drying-off; (2) 20 min drying-on and 10 min drying-off; and (3) 20 min drying-on and 15 min drying-off, which correspond to pulse ratios (PRs) of 1.2, 1.5, and 1.8, respectively. After drying, the water content, energy consumption, vitamin C content, total phenolic content, colour, taste, and odour qualities were assessed. The results suggested that IOH drying requires lower energy consumption and yields higher quality products. The energy consumption of intermittent air drying ranged from 341 kJ∙g-1 to 427 kJ∙g-1. The IAD of 1.2 and 1.5 PR reduced the browning of litchi fruits and gained better product quality. The major components of odour and tastes were explored in dried litchi. The rising PR of IAD enabled a lower retention of methane and sulphur-organic aroma and a higher assessing value of bitterness taste. This study revealed that BaTiO3 is suitable for IOH drying and it resulted in more merits of dried litchi fruit.Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen responsible for many hospital-acquired infections. The glyoxylate shunt is comprised of two enzymes, isocitrate lyase (ICL) and malate synthase G (MS), and flux through the shunt is essential for the survival of the organism in mammalian systems. In this study, we characterized the mode of action and cytotoxicity of structural analogs of 2-aminopyridines, which have been identified by earlier work as being inhibitory to both shunt enzymes. Two of these analogs were able to inhibit ICL and MS in vitro and prevented growth of P. aeruginosa on acetate (indicating cell permeability). Moreover, the compounds exerted negligible cytotoxicity against three human cell lines and showed promising in vitro drug metabolism and safety profiles.

It can provide scientific evidence for the relationship between NO2 and traffic, beneficial for developing the targeted policies and measures to reduce NO2 pollution levels in hot spots. This research may subsidize knowledge to serve as a tool for environmental and health authorities. A bioaccumulation study of 16 emerging contaminants including preservatives, UV-filters, biocides, alkylphenols, anionic surfactants and plasticizers, in Holothuria tubulosa Gmelin, 1791 specimens was developed. Water and sediments from their coastal habitat were also analyzed. https://www.selleckchem.com/ Sediment-water distribution coefficients (log Kd) were in the range 0.78 to 2.95. A rapid uptake and bioaccumulation of pollutants was found. Compounds were detected in intestine and gonads of H. tubulosa after only eight days of exposure. Field-based bioconcentration (BCF) and biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAF) were calculated. Log BCF > 1 were obtained for most of the compounds studied, indicating their tendency to accumulate in tissue of H. Tubulosa. BCF values decrease as follow Triclocarban > anionic surfactants > benzophenone 3 > non-ionic surfactants > bisphenol A > parabens. These data provide a detailed accounting of the distribution patterns of some emerging contaminants in organisms at the lower trophic level, representing a potential source of contaminants for organisms in higher levels of the food chain. Photosynthetic organisms need to respond frequently to the fluctuation of light quality and light quantity in their habitat. In response to the fluctuation of different single wavelength lights, these organisms have to adjust and optimize the employment of light energy by redistributing excitation energy and remodeling photosystem stoichiometry or light complex structure. However, the response of whole cellular processes to fluctuations in single wavelength light is mostly unknown. Here, we report the transcriptomic and proteomic dynamics and metabolic adaptation mechanisms of Nannochloropsis oceanica to blue and red light. Preferential exposure to different light spectra induces massive reprogramming of the Nannochloropsis transcriptome and proteome. Combined with physiological and biochemical investigation, the rewiring of many cellular processes was observed, including carbon/nitrogen assimilation, photosynthesis, chlorophyll and cartenoid biosynthesis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging systems, and chromatin state regulation. A strong and rapid regulation of genes or proteins related to nitrogen metabolism, photosynthesis, chlorophyll synthesis, ROS scavenging system, and carotenoid metabolism were observed during 12 h and 24 h of exposure under red light. Additionally, two light harvesting complex proteins induced by blue light and one by red light were observed. The differential responses of N. oceanica to red and blue irradiation reveal how marine microalgae adapt to change in light quality and can be exploited for biofuel feedstock development. Sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate (SDDC) is a widely used heavy metal chelating agent in harmless treatment of wastewater and hazardous waste, but SDDC and its heavy metal chelates may leak into the environment and bring potential ecological risks. In this study, the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans was used to evaluate the toxic effect of SDDC and its heavy metal Cu, Pb chelates. Multiple endpoints were investigated by subacute exposure to SDDC (0.01-100 mg/L) and micro-sized Cu, Pb chelates of SDDC (1-100 mg/L). Our data indicated that the LC50 value of SDDC was 139.39 mg/L (95% Cl 111.03, 174.75 mg/L). In addition, SDDC was found that concentration of 1 mg/L is a safe limit value for nematode C. elegans, and concentration above 1 mg/L caused adverse effects on the survival, growth, locomotion behaviors and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production of exposed nematodes. Furthermore, all tested SDDC-Cu and SDDC-Pb chelates had obviously lower toxic effect than untreated Cu, Pb metals. These two chelates also had a lower toxic effect than SDDC agent due to its more stable structure. Moreover, SDDC-Cu had a higher toxic effect than SDDC-Pb at the same concentration. Thus, our results suggest that SDDC as a kind of chelating agent applied in harmless treatment of heavy metals, the safe addition limit should not be exceeded. Removal of tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) by biochar adsorption is emerging as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly strategy. This study developed a novel pomelo peel derived biochar, which was prepared at 400 °C (**-400) and 600 °C (**-600) under nitrogen conditions. To enhance the adsorption capacity, **-400 was further activated by KOH at 600 °C with a KOH **-400 ratio of 41. The activated biochar (**-KOH) displayed a **** larger surface area (2457.37 m2/g) and total pore volume (1.14 cm3/g) than **-400 and **-600. High adsorption capacity of **-KOH was achieved for removing tetracycline (476.19 mg/g), oxytetracycline (407.5 mg/g) and chlortetracycline (555.56 mg/g) simultaneously at 313.15 K, which was comparable with other biochars derived from agricultural wastes reported previously. The adsorption data could be fitted by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model successfully. The initial solution pH indicated the potential influence of TCs adsorption capacity on **-KOH. These results suggest that pore filling, electrostatic interaction and π-π interactions between the adsorbent and adsorbate may constitute the main adsorption mechanism. **-KOH can be used as a potential adsorbent for removing TCs from ***** wastewater effectively, cheaply and in an environmentally friendly way. Cyanobacterial blooms in drinking water are worldwide concern. It is known that pre-oxidation enhanced coagulation can be more efficient at removing algae than traditional coagulation. However, its application is hindered by high oxidant/coagulant consumption and the resultant potential health risk, in the form of algal organic matter (AOM) released during oxidation. To remove the cyanobacteria and meanwhile ensure cell integrity, H2O2/Fe(II) and H2O2/Fe(III), which have been widely used to degrade organic pollutants in waters, are proposed in this study. The removal efficiency of Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa) under various oxidant/coagulant dosages, AOM release and cell integrity, as well as floc formation and morphology were investigated with these simultaneous oxidation/coagulation processes. The results show that the removal efficiency was higher than 95% with H2O2/Fe(II) and H2O2/Fe(III) under 100 μmol/L H2O2 and Fe. In addition, neither method was found to damage the algal cells in 50-200 μmol/L H2O2 dosing concentrations.

BCF values decrease as follow Triclocarban > anionic surfactants > benzophenone 3 > non-ionic surfactants > bisphenol A > parabens. These data provide a detailed accounting of the distribution patterns of some emerging contaminants in organisms at the lower trophic level, representing a potential source of contaminants for organisms in higher levels of the food chain. Photosynthetic organisms need to respond frequently to the fluctuation of light quality and light quantity in their habitat. In response to the fluctuation of different single wavelength lights, these organisms have to adjust and optimize the employment of light energy by redistributing excitation energy and remodeling photosystem stoichiometry or light complex structure. However, the response of whole cellular processes to fluctuations in single wavelength light is mostly unknown. Here, we report the transcriptomic and proteomic dynamics and metabolic adaptation mechanisms of Nannochloropsis oceanica to blue and red light. Preferential exposure to different light spectra induces massive reprogramming of the Nannochloropsis transcriptome and proteome. Combined with physiological and biochemical investigation, the rewiring of many cellular processes was observed, including carbon/nitrogen assimilation, photosynthesis, chlorophyll and cartenoid biosynthesis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging systems, and chromatin state regulation. A strong and rapid regulation of genes or proteins related to nitrogen metabolism, photosynthesis, chlorophyll synthesis, ROS scavenging system, and carotenoid metabolism were observed during 12 h and 24 h of exposure under red light. Additionally, two light harvesting complex proteins induced by blue light and one by red light were observed. The differential responses of N. oceanica to red and blue irradiation reveal how marine microalgae adapt to change in light quality and can be exploited for biofuel feedstock development. Sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate (SDDC) is a widely used heavy metal chelating agent in harmless treatment of wastewater and hazardous waste, but SDDC and its heavy metal chelates may leak into the environment and bring potential ecological risks. In this study, the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans was used to evaluate the toxic effect of SDDC and its heavy metal Cu, Pb chelates. Multiple endpoints were investigated by subacute exposure to SDDC (0.01-100 mg/L) and micro-sized Cu, Pb chelates of SDDC (1-100 mg/L). Our data indicated that the LC50 value of SDDC was 139.39 mg/L (95% Cl 111.03, 174.75 mg/L). In addition, SDDC was found that concentration of 1 mg/L is a safe limit value for nematode C. elegans, and concentration above 1 mg/L caused adverse effects on the survival, growth, locomotion behaviors and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production of exposed nematodes. Furthermore, all tested SDDC-Cu and SDDC-Pb chelates had obviously lower toxic effect than untreated Cu, Pb metals. These two chelates also had a lower toxic effect than SDDC agent due to its more stable structure. Moreover, SDDC-Cu had a higher toxic effect than SDDC-Pb at the same concentration. Thus, our results suggest that SDDC as a kind of chelating agent applied in harmless treatment of heavy metals, the safe addition limit should not be exceeded. Removal of tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) by biochar adsorption is emerging as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly strategy. This study developed a novel pomelo peel derived biochar, which was prepared at 400 °C (BC-400) and 600 °C (BC-600) under nitrogen conditions. To enhance the adsorption capacity, BC-400 was further activated by KOH at 600 °C with a KOH BC-400 ratio of 41. The activated biochar (BC-KOH) displayed a much larger surface area (2457.37 m2/g) and total pore volume (1.14 cm3/g) than BC-400 and BC-600. High adsorption capacity of BC-KOH was achieved for removing tetracycline (476.19 mg/g), oxytetracycline (407.5 mg/g) and chlortetracycline (555.56 mg/g) simultaneously at 313.15 K, which was comparable with other biochars derived from agricultural wastes reported previously. The adsorption data could be fitted by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model successfully. The initial solution pH indicated the potential influence of TCs adsorption capacity on BC-KOH. These results suggest that pore filling, electrostatic interaction and π-π interactions between the adsorbent and adsorbate may constitute the main adsorption mechanism. BC-KOH can be used as a potential adsorbent for removing TCs from swine wastewater effectively, cheaply and in an environmentally friendly way. Cyanobacterial blooms in drinking water are worldwide concern. It is known that pre-oxidation enhanced coagulation can be more efficient at removing algae than traditional coagulation. However, its application is hindered by high oxidant/coagulant consumption and the resultant potential health risk, in the form of algal organic matter (AOM) released during oxidation. To remove the cyanobacteria and meanwhile ensure cell integrity, H2O2/Fe(II) and H2O2/Fe(III), which have been widely used to degrade organic pollutants in waters, are proposed in this study. The removal efficiency of Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa) under various oxidant/coagulant dosages, AOM release and cell integrity, as well as floc formation and morphology were investigated with these simultaneous oxidation/coagulation processes. The results show that the removal efficiency was higher than 95% with H2O2/Fe(II) and H2O2/Fe(III) under 100 μmol/L H2O2 and Fe. In addition, neither method was found to damage the algal cells in 50-200 μmol/L H2O2 dosing concentrations.
