Fine-needle aspiration was positive for CD117 and the overall features were of a GIST. After an initial thoracoscopic approach, the tumour was completely enucleated through a thoracotomy incision. Methods of PDT of cancer will be discussed and the current state of knowledge as well as future trends in the development of photodynamic techniques will be presented, including the possibility of using photodynamic antimicrobial therapy. Research pioneers in photodynamic medicine such as Thomas Dougherty are an inspiration for the development of methods of PDD and PDT in our Clinic. The Center for Laser Diagnostics and Therapy in Bytom, Poland promotes the propagation of PDD and PDT through the training of clinicians and raising awareness among students in training and the general public. Physicians at the Center are engaged in photomedical research aimed at clinical implementation and exploration of new avenues in photomedicine while optimizing existing modalities. The Center promotes dissemination of clinical results from a wide range of topics in PDD and PDT and serving as representative authorities of photodynamic medicine in Poland and Europe. We used four different previously reported methods to assess the effect of the environment on proliferative and immature cells (a) the comparison of raw totals of proliferative and immature cells; (b) these totals standardized to brain mass; (c) these totals expressed as a density using the volume of the granular cell layer (GCLv) for standardization; and (d) these totals expressed as a percentage of the total number of granule cells. For all methods, the numbers of proliferative cells did not differ statistically among the three groups, indicating that the rate of proliferation, while malleable to experimental manipulation or transiently in response to events of importance in the natural habitat, appears to occur, for the most part, at a predetermined rate within a species. For the immature cells, raw numbers and standardizations to brain mass and GCLv revealed no difference between the three groups studied; however, standardization to total granule cell numbers indicated that the two groups of wild-caught bats had significantly higher numbers of immature neurons than the captive-bred bats. These contrasting results indicate that the interpretation of the effect of the environment on the numbers of immature neurons appears method dependent. Here we used simulations to determine whether inter-annual population variability could be masking a 'true' MIH relationship. In each simulation, fixed linear relationships between productivity, richness, and 50-year average abundance mimicked the MIH mechanism. Abundance was allowed to vary annually and sampled for 1-40 years. Linear regressions of richness on sampled abundance assessed the probability of detecting the fixed MIH relationship. Medium to high population variability with short-term sampling (1-3 years) led to poor detection of the fixed MIH relationship. Notably, this level of sampling and population variability describes nearly all MIH studies to date. Long-term sampling (5+ years) led to improved detection of the fixed relationship, thus it is necessary to reliably detect support for the MIH. Such sampling duration is non-existent in the MIH literature. We contrast inferences drawn from this model with alternate models incorporating only subsets of the data available. Using extensive simulations and an empirical example of multi-method brown bear (Ursus arctos) monitoring data from northern Pakistan, we quantified the benefits of including multiple sources of information in SCR models in terms of parameter precision and bias. Our multiple observation processes SCR model (MOP) yielded a more complete picture of the underlying processes, reduced bias, and led to more precise parameter estimates.

    Huntington's disease (HD) is an inherited disorder caused by the polyglutamine (poly-Q) mutations of the HTT gene results in neurodegeneration characterized by chorea, loss of coordination, cognitive decline. However, HD pathogenesis is still elusive. Despite the availability of a wide range of biological data, a comprehensive understanding of HD's mechanism from machine learning is so far unrealized, majorly due to the lack of needed data density.

    To harness the knowledge of the HD pathogenesis from the expression profiles of postmortem prefrontal cortex samples of 157 HD and 157 controls, we used gene profiling ranking as the criteria to reduce the dimension to the order of magnitude of the sample size, followed by machine learning using the decision tree, rule induction, random forest, and generalized linear model.

    These four Machine learning models identified 66 potential HD-contributing genes, with the cross-validated accuracy of 90.79 ± 4.57%, 89.49 ± 5.20%, 90.45 ± 4.24%, and 97.46 ± 3.26%, respectively. The identified genes enriched the gene ontology of transcriptional regulation, inflammatory response, neuron projection, and the cytoskeleton. Moreover, three genes in the cognitive, sensory, and perceptual systems were also identified.

    Imported malaria is a major challenge for countries that are in malaria elimination stage such as Zambia. Legitimate cross-border activities add to the risk of transmission, necessitating determination of prevalence, characteristics and risk factors of imported and local malaria.

    This cross-sectional study was conducted in 103 consented child and adult patients with clinical malaria symptoms, from selected health facilities in north-western Zambia. Patient demographic data and blood samples for malaria microscopy and full blood count were obtained. Chi-square and penalized logistic regression were performed to describe the characteristics and assess the risk factors of imported and local malaria in North-Western Province.

    The Oncology Care Model (OCM) developed by the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation were used. The OCM data provided to Mount Sinai on 2938 breast-cancer episodes included both baseline periods and three performance periods between Jan 1, 2012 and Jan 1, 2018. We included 11 variables representing information on treatment, demography and socio-economics status, in addition to episode expenditures. OCM data were collected from participating practices and payers. We applied a principled variable selection algorithm using a flexible tree-based machine learning technique, Quantile Regression Forests.

    We found that the use of chemotherapy drugs (versus hormonal therapy) and interval of days without chemotherapy predominantly affected medical expenses among high-cost breast cancer patients. The second-tier major determinants were comorbidities and age. Receipt of surgery or radiation, geographically adjusted relative cost and insurance type were also identified as important high-cost drivers. These factors had disproportionally larger effects upon the high-cost patients.

    Data-driven machine learning methods provide insights into the underlying web of factors driving up the costs for breast cancer care management. Results from our study may help inform population health management initiatives and allow policymakers to develop tailored interventions to meet the needs of those high-cost patients and to avoid waste of scarce resource.

    A reservoir of replication-competent but latent virus is the main obstacle to a cure for HIV-1 infection. Much of this reservoir resides in memory CD4 T cells. We hypothesized that these cells can be reactivated with antigens from HIV-1 and other common pathogens to reverse latency. We obtained mononuclear cells from the peripheral blood of antiretroviral-treated patients with suppressed viremia. We tested pools of peptides and proteins derived from HIV-1 and from other pathogens including CMV for their ability to reverse latency ex vivo by activation of memory responses. To harness the knowledge of the HD pathogenesis from the expression profiles of postmortem prefrontal cortex samples of 157 HD and 157 controls, we used gene profiling ranking as the criteria to reduce the dimension to the order of magnitude of the sample size, followed by machine learning using the decision tree, rule induction, random forest, and generalized linear model. These four Machine learning models identified 66 potential HD-contributing genes, with the cross-validated accuracy of 90.79 ± 4.57%, 89.49 ± 5.20%, 90.45 ± 4.24%, and 97.46 ± 3.26%, respectively. The identified genes enriched the gene ontology of transcriptional regulation, inflammatory response, neuron projection, and the cytoskeleton. Moreover, three genes in the cognitive, sensory, and perceptual systems were also identified. Legitimate cross-border activities add to the risk of transmission, necessitating determination of prevalence, characteristics and risk factors of imported and local malaria. This cross-sectional study was conducted in 103 consented child and adult patients with clinical malaria symptoms, from selected health facilities in north-western Zambia. Patient demographic data and blood samples for malaria microscopy and full blood count were obtained.     Multifocal choroiditis (MFC) is described as a chronic bilateral progressive inflammatory outer chorioretinopathy, that usually affects healthy myopic Caucasian women with no associated systemic/ocular diseases. This patient had a severe acute presentation of aggressive multifocal choroiditis that was treated with systemic steroids.

    This is a retrospective case report of a 30-year-old, white, European, female who was 10weeks pregnant. She had bilateral severe vision loss and rapidly progressive rash and arthritis. The patient was extensively investigated for inflammatory and infectious etiologies by a multidisciplinary team including rheumatology and obstetrics and gynecology. Antistreptolysin levels were moderately raised. Serial retinal optical coherence tomography scans were performed and were critical for assessing disease activity and demonstrating the extent of retinal and choroidal lesions.

    Descriptive case report of a patient with SLE with retinal vasculitis complicated by an ischemic retinal vein occlusion and cystoid macular edema.

    A 30-year-old female patient with a history of SLE presented with retinal vasculitis and an ischemic, branch retinal vein occlusion with macular edema in the left eye. Oral corticosteroid was administered along with mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) as a corticosteroid-sparing agent. Despite MMF therapy, the patient developed an exacerbation of her vasculitis with the involvement of both eyes. Adalimumab was initiated with a resultant resolution of retinal vasculitis as a corticosteroid-sparing strategy with over 2 years of follow-up.

  • Operationally tolerant kidney transplant recipients harbor an immunological signature, associated with low rejection risk, and focused on B lymphocytes. Here, we investigated whether patients with long-term transplantation and still on immunosuppressive therapy would present such a signature of low immunological rejection risk, compared to more recently transplanted patients. Of 114 kidney transplant recipients enrolled, 38 with more than 25 years of graft survival and stable graft function under calcineurin inhibitors, were matched with two different groups of transplanted patients (10-15 and 5-7 years after transplantation). https://www.selleckchem.com/ Three phenotypes associated with low immunological rejection risk (Tfh, B and regulatory T cells), initially found in operationally tolerant kidney transplant recipients, and the composite score of tolerance (combination of six transcriptomic markers, age at transplantation and age at sampling) were analyzed. We found that very long-term patients were characterized by a significantly lower percentage of total B cells, a significantly higher proportion of CD24HiCD38Lo memory B cells, significantly fewer CD24LoCD38Lo naive B cells, and a significantly lower proportion of PD1HiCCR7Lo Tfh lymphocytes than more recently transplanted patients. This phenotype is associated with a positive composite score of tolerance in patients transplanted for more than 25 years. Thus, our study suggests a dual phenotype in very long-term kidney transplanted patients with an immunological profile associated with low rejection risk.
    There are instances in which an estimate of the brain volume should be obtained from MRI in clinical practice. Our objective is to calculate cross-sectional robustness of a convolutional neural network (CNN) based software (Entelai Pic) for brain volume estimation and compare it to traditional software such as FreeSurfer, CAT12 and FSL in healthy controls (HC).

    Sixteen HC were scanned four times, two different days on two different MRI scanners (1.5 T and 3 T). Volumetric T1-weighted images were acquired and post-processed with FreeSurfer v6.0.0, Entelai Pic v2, CAT12 v12.5 and FSL v5.0.9. Whole-brain, grey matter (GM), white matter (WM) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) volumes were calculated. Correlation and agreement between methods was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Bland Altman plots. Robustness was assessed using the coefficient of variation (CV).

    Whole-brain volume estimation had better correlation between FreeSurfer and Entelai Pic (ICC (95% CI) 0.96 (0.94-0.97)) than FreeSurfer and CAT12 (0.92 (0.88-0.96)) and FSL (0.87 (0.79-0.91)). WM, GM and CSF showed a similar trend. Compared to FreeSurfer, Entelai Pic provided similarly robust segmentations of brain volumes both on same-scanner (mean CV 1.07, range 0.20-3.13% vs. mean CV 1.05, range 0.21-3.20%, p = 0.86) and on different-scanner variables (mean CV 3.84, range 2.49-5.91% vs. mean CV 3.84, range 2.62-5.13%, p = 0.96). Resveratrol is one of the most widely studied polyphenols with several beneficial properties. In the present study, we investigated the effects of resveratrol on the pain related hypersensitivity. And we found that the up-regulated phosphorylation of S6 could be suppressed by resveratrol. The nocifensive behavior duration time to heat and chemical algogens stimulation in Cntnap2-deficiency (Cntnap2-/-) **** could be attenuated by resveratrol. Our results indicated that resveratrol could rescue the pain related hypersensitivity for Cntnap2-/- **** may be via mTOR signaling pathway.Darifenacin, an anticholinergic agent, has been used to treat overactive bladder syndrome. Despite its extensive clinical use, there is little information about the effect of darifenacin on vascular ion channels, specifically K+ channels. This study aimed to investigate the effect of the anti-muscarinic drug darifenacin on voltage-gated K+ (Kv) channels, vascular contractility, and coronary blood flow in rabbit coronary arteries. We used the whole-cell patch-clamp technique to evaluate the effect of darifenacin on Kv channels. Darifenacin inhibited the Kv current in a concentration-dependent manner. Applying 1 μM darifenacin shifted the activation and inactivation curves toward a more positive and negative potential, respectively. Darifenacin slowed the time constants of recovery from inactivation. Furthermore, blockade of the Kv current with darifenacin was increased gradually by applying a train of pulses, indicating that darifenacin inhibited Kv currents in a use- (state)-dependent manner. The darifenacin-mediated inhibition of Kv currents was associated with the Kv1.5 subtype, not the Kv2.1 or Kv7 subtype. Applying another anti-muscarinic drug atropine or ipratropium did not affect the Kv current or change the inhibitory effect of darifenacin. Isometric organ bath experiments using isolated coronary arteries were applied to evaluate whether darifenacin-induced inhibition of the Kv channel causes vasocontraction. Darifenacin substantially induced vasocontraction. Furthermore, darifenacin caused membrane depolarization and decreased coronary blood flow. From these results, we concluded that darifenacin inhibits the Kv currents in concentration- and use- (state)-dependent manners. Despite its extensive clinical use, there is little information about the effect of darifenacin on vascular ion channels, specifically K+ channels. This study aimed to investigate the effect of the anti-muscarinic drug darifenacin on voltage-gated K+ (Kv) channels, vascular contractility, and coronary blood flow in rabbit coronary arteries. We used the whole-cell patch-clamp technique to evaluate the effect of darifenacin on Kv channels. Darifenacin inhibited the Kv current in a concentration-dependent manner. Applying 1 μM darifenacin shifted the activation and inactivation curves toward a more positive and negative potential, respectively. Darifenacin slowed the time constants of recovery from inactivation. Furthermore, blockade of the Kv current with darifenacin was increased gradually by applying a train of pulses, indicating that darifenacin inhibited Kv currents in a use- (state)-dependent manner. The darifenacin-mediated inhibition of Kv currents was associated with the Kv1.5 subtype, not the Kv2.1 or Kv7 subtype. Applying another anti-muscarinic drug atropine or ipratropium did not affect the Kv current or change the inhibitory effect of darifenacin. Isometric organ bath experiments using isolated coronary arteries were applied to evaluate whether darifenacin-induced inhibition of the Kv channel causes vasocontraction.     This study aimed to construct a predictive model for recurrence and metastasis in patients with localized clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) based on multiple preoperative blood indexes and oncological characteristics.

    Overall, 442 patients with localized ccRCC between 2013 and 2015 were included. Using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) Cox regression analysis, the top three risk factors from the peripheral blood indicators were screened to construct a risk score, and a prognostic model was established. Harrell's concordance index (C-index) was applied to evaluate the predictive accuracy of the model for predicting disease-free survival (DFS) in ccRCC.

However, it is important to recognize patterns, treatment, and clinical outcomes of unplanned surgeries for patients with bone sarcomas. This multicenter study aimed to characterize the clinical outcomes of patients with bone sarcomas who underwent unplanned surgeries.

    Data of 43 patients with bone sarcomas who underwent unplanned surgery between 2006 and 2017 were obtained from 23 hospitals in Japan. These included 18 cases of osteosarcoma, 9 of Ewing sarcoma, 8 of chondrosarcoma, and 6 of undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma. The study included 28 men and 15 women, with a mean age of 46 years. The mean follow-up duration was 59 months.

    The main primary tumor sites were the femur (n = 19), spine (n = 6), pelvis (n = 5), tibia (n = 3), and humerus (n = 3). The primary diagnoses were benign bone tumor (n = 24), trauma (n = 7), bone metastasis (n = 5), osteomyelitis (n = 4), degeneration (n=2), and unknown (n = 1).     Adults (>18 years) with intussusception treated by surgical or conservative measures were included from January 2005 to January 2018, and the manifestation, types, diagnosis and treatment of adult intussusception in our centre were reviewed.

    A total of 150 patients with adult intussusception were included in this study. The clinical manifestations included 111 cases (74%) of abdominal pain, 38 cases (25.3%) of ****** stool, 37 cases (24.7%) of bowel obstructions, 33 cases (22%) of abdominal distension, 29 cases (19.3%) of nausea and vomiting, 19 cases (12.7%) of an abdominal mass, and 12 cases (8.0%) of diarrhoea. The types of intussusception were classified into 36 cases (24%) of enteric intussusception, 87 cases (58%) of intestine-colon intussusception and 27 cases (18%) of colonic intussusception. Surgical intervention was applied in 139 cases (92.7%), including 115 patients who underwent open surgery, and laparoscopy-assisted surgery was performed in 24 patients. The main pathogenesis of intussusception was malignant tumors in 51 cases (36.7%) and benign tumors and polyps in 49 cases (35.3%).

    Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and microRNAs (miRNAs) were reported to be related to the development of ovarian cancer (OC). Using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) Cox regression analysis, the top three risk factors from the peripheral blood indicators were screened to construct a risk score, and a prognostic model was established. Harrell's concordance index (C-index) was applied to evaluate the predictive accuracy of the model for predicting disease-free survival (DFS) in ccRCC. Out of 38 blood indexes, the top three predictors were fibrinogen (FIB), C-reactive protein (CRP) and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR). The FIB-CRP-NLR (FCN) score (hazard ratio [HR] 1.86, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.21-2.9, = 0.005) was an independent prognostic factor in multivariate analysis. Furthermore, the FIB-CRP-NLR-T-Grade (FCNTG) risk model combining FCN score, T stage and Furhman grade achieved a higher prognostic accuracy (mean C-index, 0.728) than both the FCN score alone (mean C-index, 0.675) and the stage, size, grade, and necrosis (SSIGN) score (mean C-index, 0.686) in the validation cohort. The outcomes of unplanned surgery for bone sarcomas have not been frequently discussed. However, it is important to recognize patterns, treatment, and clinical outcomes of unplanned surgeries for patients with bone sarcomas. This multicenter study aimed to characterize the clinical outcomes of patients with bone sarcomas who underwent unplanned surgeries. Data of 43 patients with bone sarcomas who underwent unplanned surgery between 2006 and 2017 were obtained from 23 hospitals in Japan. These included 18 cases of osteosarcoma, 9 of Ewing sarcoma, 8 of chondrosarcoma, and 6 of undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma. The study included 28 men and 15 women, with a mean age of 46 years. The mean follow-up duration was 59 months. The main primary tumor sites were the femur (n = 19), spine (n = 6), pelvis (n = 5), tibia (n = 3), and humerus (n = 3). The primary diagnoses were benign bone tumor (n = 24), trauma (n = 7), bone metastasis (n = 5), osteomyelitis (n = 4), degeneration (n=2), and unknown (n = 1). Adults (>18 years) with intussusception treated by surgical or conservative measures were included from January 2005 to January 2018, and the manifestation, types, diagnosis and treatment of adult intussusception in our centre were reviewed. A total of 150 patients with adult intussusception were included in this study. The clinical manifestations included 111 cases (74%) of abdominal pain, 38 cases (25.3%) of bloody stool, 37 cases (24.7%) of bowel obstructions, 33 cases (22%) of abdominal distension, 29 cases (19.3%) of nausea and vomiting, 19 cases (12.7%) of an abdominal mass, and 12 cases (8.0%) of diarrhoea. The types of intussusception were classified into 36 cases (24%) of enteric intussusception, 87 cases (58%) of intestine-colon intussusception and 27 cases (18%) of colonic intussusception. Surgical intervention was applied in 139 cases (92.7%), including 115 patients who underwent open surgery, and laparoscopy-assisted surgery was performed in 24 patients. The main pathogenesis of intussusception was malignant tumors in 51 cases (36.7%) and benign tumors and polyps in 49 cases (35.3%). Malignant and benign tumors are the main causes of adult intussusception. Abdominal CT is the preferred evaluation method for the preoperative diagnosis of this condition. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and microRNAs (miRNAs) were reported to be related to the development of ovarian cancer (OC). In this study, the functional mechanisms of lncRNA metastasis associated with lung adenocarcinoma transcript 1 (MALAT1) and microRNA-1271-5p (miR-1271-5p) were explored in OC. The level of MALAT1, miR-1271-5p, or E2F transcription factor 5 (E2F5) was detected by qRT-PCR. MTT assay, flow cytometry analysis and transwell migration and invasion assays were performed to determine cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration and invasion, respectively. E2F5 protein expression was detected by Western blot. The interaction between miR-1271-5p and MALAT1 or E2F transcription factor 5 (E2F5) was confirmed by the dual-luciferase reporter assay. MALAT1 and E2F5 level were increased, while miR-1271-5p level was decreased in cisplatin (DDP)-resistant OC tissues and cells. MALAT1 knockdown or miR-1271-5p upregulation decreased IC of cisplatin, and inhibited cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and facilitated cell apoptosis in DDP-resistant OC cells.

We use an epi-fluorescence microscope where both the illumination and detection light patterns are speckled, due to light scattering by a thin disordered layer. The spatio-temporal cross-correlation of the detection speckle pattern is calculated as a function of lag time and spatial shift and is used to determine the diffusion constant and number of fluorescent particles in the sample without requiring any phase retrieval procedure. It is worth to note that the "memory effect" range is not required to extend beyond a distance of few speckle grains, thus making our method potentially useful for nearly arbitrary values of the thickness of the scattering layer.Photon pair sources in the visible to NIR wavelength region play a key role in quantum optics. We also show ultra-efficient frequency comb generations in those resonators and achieve record-low threshold powers on the order of ∼20 µW and ∼120 µW for the resonators with 1 THz and 90 GHz free-spectral ranges, respectively. Moreover, compared with the conventional CVQKD based on homodyne detection, the proposed LLO-CVQKD scheme can measure X and P quadrature simultaneously using heterodyne detection without need of extra random basis selection. Besides, the phase noise, which contains the fast-drift phase noise due to the relative phase of two independent lasers and the slow-drift phase noise introduced by quantum channel disturbance, has been compensated experimentally in real time, so that a low level of excess noise with a 25 km optical fiber channel (with 5 dB loss) is obtained for the achievable secure key rate of 7.04 Mbps in the asymptotic regime and 1.85 Mbps under the finite-size block of 107.

  • The growth hormone (GH)-insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF1) endocrine axis has a key role in normal growth and development. Laron syndrome (LS) is a type of dwarfism that results from mutation of the GH receptor, leading to congenital IGF1 deficiency. Epidemiological studies have shown that LS patients are protected from cancer. Genome-wide profiling led to the identification of a series of metabolic genes whose differential expression in LS might be linked to cancer protection. Nephronectin (NPNT) is an intracellular and secreted extracellular matrix protein with important roles in kidney development. NPNT was identified as the top-downregulated gene in LS-derived cells in comparison with ethnic-, age- and gender-matched controls (p-value=0.0148; fold-change=-3.12 versus controls). NPNT has not been previously linked to the IGF1 signaling pathway. The present study was aimed at evaluating the hypothesis that NPNT is a new target for IGF1 action and that decreased expression of NPNT in LS is correlated with cancer protection.

    Basal and IGF1-stimulated NPNT expression were assessed in LS lymphoblastoid cells as well as in human breast and prostate cancer cells. NPNT silencing experiments were conducted using siRNA methodology.

    We provide evidence that IGF1 stimulates NPNT expression in LS-derived lymphoblastoids and various cancer cell lines. In addition, we demonstrate that NPNT silencing results in diminished activation of the AKT and ERK1/2 pathways, with ensuing decreases in cellular proliferation.

    Steroids are commonly used in patients with solid tumours for supportive therapy. In other cases, they are an essential part of cancer treatment such as prostate cancer. Some preclinical observations lead to the notion that glucocorticoids may modulate growth factors' pathways and may induce the progression of cancers. Glucocorticoids are associated with several side-effects on many organ systems (e.g. serious infections, diabetes, sepsisand thrombosis). We have performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the outcome of cancer patients that assume or not steroids.

    Published articles that evaluated survival associated with steroids use in cancer patients from inception to June 2020 were identified by searching the PubMed, EMBASEand Cochrane Library databases. The primary outcome of interest was the risk of death, and the secondary end-point was the risk of progression in steroid versus non-steroid users.

Sodium Alginate (0.5 %, 1 % and 2 %) was used as a reducing and stabilizing agent. Presence of particles was confirmed by UV-vis Spectroscopy, with absorbance maxima of 412-413 nm for 0.5 %, 1 % and 2 % of polymer. Hydrodynamic sizes of particles recorded for 0.5 %, 1 % and 2 % polymer were 128.4 ± 1.5, 129.9 ± 3.6 and 148.6 ± 1.0 nm by DLS. TEM revealed roughly spherical to cuboidal particles ranging from 15-20 nm and clusters of 100 nm and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy confirmed the presence of silver in the particles. Analysis of the TEM images was done in MATLAB R2016b using histogram equalisation for image enhancement and entropy filtering for image segmentation. Based on the nanomechanical properties of the veins, morphology of the hind wing, surface structures of the veins, and microstructures of the cross sections (including the veins and wing membranes), four 3-D coupling models (Model I and Model II variably reduced-modulus veins with and without wrinkles, respectively; Model III and Model IV uniformly reduced-modulus veins with and without wrinkles, respectively) are established. Sodium Alginate (0.5 %, 1 % and 2 %) was used as a reducing and stabilizing agent. Presence of particles was confirmed by UV-vis Spectroscopy, with absorbance maxima of 412-413 nm for 0.5 %, 1 % and 2 % of polymer. Hydrodynamic sizes of particles recorded for 0.5 %, 1 % and 2 % polymer were 128.4 ± 1.5, 129.9 ± 3.6 and 148.6 ± 1.0 nm by DLS. TEM revealed roughly spherical to cuboidal particles ranging from 15-20 nm and clusters of 100 nm and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy confirmed the presence of silver in the particles. Analysis of the TEM images was done in MATLAB R2016b using histogram equalisation for image enhancement and entropy filtering for image segmentation. These techniques revealed the surface pores and polymer distribution around the particle. Statistical analysis (ANOVA) was performed for the measured fractal dimensions of nanoparticles with polymer coating, width of particle together with polymer coating, and thickness of only polymer coating around the particle for various study groups. Significant differences (p less then 0.05) were found both between and within the study groups for fractal dimensions of nanoparticles with polymer coating, width of nanoparticles and thickness of polymer coating alone. The analysis was successful in confirming presence and thickness of polymer layer on particles.The veins in the hind wings of the Asian ladybird beetle (Harmonia axyridis) play active roles in flight and in the folding/unfolding of the hind wing. Wrinkled vein structures are located within the bending zone and are used for folding the hind wing. This paper investigates the coupled effect of wrinkled vein structures within the hind wing of H. axyridis on its deformation. Based on the nanomechanical properties of the veins, morphology of the hind wing, surface structures of the veins, and microstructures of the cross sections (including the veins and wing membranes), four 3-D coupling models (Model I and Model II variably reduced-modulus veins with and without wrinkles, respectively; Model III and Model IV uniformly reduced-modulus veins with and without wrinkles, respectively) are established. Relative to the bending and twisting model shapes, Model I has much more flexibility during passive deformation to control wing deformations. The simulation results show that both the wrinkled structures in the bending zone and the variably reduced modulus of the veins contribute to the flight performance (the bending and twisting deformations) of the hind wings, which has important implications for the design of the deployable wings of micro air vehicles (MAVs).

The highest contributor to aluminum in the diet was from cereals and cereal products. In general, there might be some potential risks to the 2 to 6-year-old population due to exposure to lead and aluminum. Contamination of aluminum in cereals and cereal products needs further consideration.Contamination of poultry carcasses is considered as a critical point in the evaluation of poultry meat safety. The present study aimed at determining the decontamination effects of natural antimicrobial derived from grape waste extract and pomegranate waste extract (GWE and PWE) on poultry carcasses in a slaughterhouse. Poultry carcasses were treated in chiller with concentrations of 0, 2, 4 and 6% of pomegranate and grape waste extracts. Pomegranate and grape waste extracts contained 432.20 and 328.43 mg GAE/g total phenolic compounds. These extracts showed significant antimicrobial effect on the main poultry bacteria in vitro. On the first day of cold storage, significant reduction in total bacterial counts (p less then .05) was observed in treated carcasses. After 3 days of storage time, total bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli reduced significantly (p less then .05) compared to untreated samples. At sixth and ninth days of storage time, significant reduction in total volatile nitrogen (TVN), total bacteria counts, Staphylococcus aureus, coliforms, and Escherichia coli were observed. Sensory attributes in treated carcasses with PWE and GWE have been enhanced significantly compared to untreated during acceptable shelf time (p less then .05). Based on the results, pomegranate and grape waste extracts can be used to preserve and improve the shelf life of the poultry carcasses close to the standard range until the ninth day of storage. Application of pomegranate and grape waste extracts in slaughterhouse could be considered as an environmentally, natural and safe decontamination intervention in integral food safety system.
    The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of oral vitamin K2 (Menaquinone-7 [MK-7]) on clinical and biochemical parameters in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) patients.

    In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, 84 PCOS patients were randomly assigned into the treatment (90µg Menaquinone-7 daily for 8weeks) and placebo groups. Insulin resistance, lipid profile, endocrine biomarkers, and body composition of the participants were measured before and after the intervention. This study was performed in Ghadir Mother & Child Hospital affiliated to Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Shiraz, Iran.

    Menaquinone-7 supplementation, when compared to placebo, significantly decreased serum fasting insulin (

Of the chosen plant essential oils, the most pronounced antimicrobial effect was detected in the case of oregano. The essential oils of thyme and mint also showed elevated antimicrobial activity. A synergistic effect was observed in case of five combinations of essential oil. Based on the results, we find that some individual essential oils and mixture compositions (due to synergic effect) could be good candidates for the preservation of fresh vegetables.   • Polyurethanes are widely used in interventional devices due to the excellent physicochemical property. However, non-specific adhesion and severe inflammatory response of ordinary polyurethanes may lead to severe complications of intravenous devices. Herein, a novel phospholipid-based polycarbonate urethanes (PCUs) were developed via two-step solution polymerization by direct synthesis based on functional raw materials. Furthermore, PCUs were coated on biomedical metal sheets to construct biomimetic anti-fouling surface. The results of stress-strain curves exhibited excellent tensile properties of PCUs films. Differential scanning calorimetry results indicated that the microphase separation of such PCUs polymers could be well regulated by adjusting the formulation of chain extender, leading to different biological response. In vitro blood compatibility tests including bovine serum albumin adsorption, fibrinogen adsorption and denaturation, platelet adhesion and whole-blood experiment showed superior performance in inhibition non-specific adhesion of PCUs samples. Endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells culture tests further revealed a good anti-cell adhesion ability. Finally, animal experiments including ex vivo blood circulation and subcutaneous inflammation animal experiments indicated a strong ability in anti-thrombosis and histocompatibility. These results high light the strong anti-adhesion property of phospholipid-based PCUs films, which may be applied to the blood-contacting implants such as intravenous catheter or antithrombotic surface in the future.The biomaterials composed of mammalian extracellular matrix (ECM) have a great potential in pelvic floor tissue repair and functional reconstruction. Results clearly highlight that MAG nanofunctionalization substantially improves cell proliferation up to 70% compared with the control (Mg-HA-based scaffold), whereas both Au NRs and Pd NPs nanofunctionalization induce a cell growth inhibition of 94% and 89%, respectively. Similar evidences were found for the osteoinductive properties showing relevant calcium deposits (25% higher than the control) for MAG nanofunctionalization, while a decreasing of cell differentiation (20% lower than the control) for both Au NRs and Pd NPs derivatization. These results are in agreement with previous studies that found cytotoxic effects for both Pd NPs and Au NRs. The excellent improvement of both osteoconductivity and osteoinductivity of the MAG NF-HA-S could be attributed to the high intrinsic magnetic field of superparamagnetic MAG NPs. Compared with that of bioactive ceramics, such as calcium phosphate, SiC does not induce spontaneous interface bonding to living bone. In this study, bioactive tantalum (Ta) metal deposited on porous SiC scaffolds by chemical vapour deposition was investigated to accelerate osseointegration and improve the bonding to bones. Scanning electron microscopy indicated that the Ta coating evenly covered the entire scaffold structure. Energy-dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the coating consisted of Ta phases. The bonding strength between the Ta coating and the SiC substrate is 88.4 MPa. The yield strength of porous SiC with a Ta coating (pTa) was 45.8 ± 2.9 MPa, the compressive strength was 61.4 ± 3.2 MPa and the elastic modulus was ∼4.8 GPa. When MG-63 human osteoblasts were co-cultured with pTa, osteoblasts showed good adhesion and spreading on the surface of the pTa and its porous structure, which showed that it has excellent bioactivity and cyto-compatibility.

In this study, bioactive tantalum (Ta) metal deposited on porous SiC scaffolds by chemical vapour deposition was investigated to accelerate osseointegration and improve the bonding to bones. Scanning electron microscopy indicated that the Ta coating evenly covered the entire scaffold structure. Energy-dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the coating consisted of Ta phases. The bonding strength between the Ta coating and the SiC substrate is 88.4 MPa. The yield strength of porous SiC with a Ta coating (pTa) was 45.8 ± 2.9 MPa, the compressive strength was 61.4 ± 3.2 MPa and the elastic modulus was ∼4.8 GPa. When MG-63 human osteoblasts were co-cultured with pTa, osteoblasts showed good adhesion and spreading on the surface of the pTa and its porous structure, which showed that it has excellent bioactivity and cyto-compatibility.
