Of the 1223 studies initially identified, 82 were thoroughly analyzed and are part of this systematic review. Of these, 25 articles only report internal load data, 20 report only external load data, and 37 studies report both internal and external load measures. There is a huge number of load measures, which requires that soccer coaches select and focus their attention on the most useful and specific measures. Standardizing the classification of the different measures is vital in the organization of this task, as well as when it is intended to compare the results obtained in different investigations.
    Early onset of psychopathology is often an index of a more severe clinical course and worse prognosis. This review examined the course of bipolar disorder (BD) with onset in childhood and adolescence, with a focus on persistence of symptoms, severity of illness, comorbidity, and functional impairment.

    The databases of PubMed, Embase, and PsycInfo were systematically searched for publications since 1990 reporting on long-term (12 months or longer) assessments of patients with early onset BD.

    Forty-two relevant publications were identified, which reported on data derived from 15 different patient cohorts, including 7 prospective research psychopathology studies, 4 medical record reviews, 2 follow-ups of clinical trial samples, 1 managed care database, and 1 nationwide registry, for a total of 10,187 patients. The length of follow-ups ranged from 1.0 to 15 years. Diagnostic stability of BD ranged from 73% to 100% over ten years. Recovery rate from an index episode was 81.5-100% and recurrence rate was 35-67%.

    Antiretroviral therapy (ART) during pregnancy is important for both maternal health and prevention of perinatal HIV-1 transmission; however adequate data on the safety and efficacy of different ART regimens that are likely to be used by pregnant women are scarce. In this trial we compared the safety and efficacy of three antiretroviral regimens started in pregnancy dolutegravir, emtricitabine, and tenofovir alafenamide fumarate; dolutegravir, emtricitabine, and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate; and efavirenz, emtricitabine, and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate.

    This multicentre, open-label, randomised controlled, phase 3 trial was done at 22 clinical research sites in nine countries (Botswana, Brazil, India, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda, the USA, and Zimbabwe). Pregnant women (aged ≥18 years) with confirmed HIV-1 infection and at 14-28 weeks' gestation were eligible. Women who had previously taken antiretrovirals in the past were excluded (up to 14 days of ART during the current pregnancy was permited in pregnancy, dolutegravir-containing regimens had superior virological efficacy at delivery compared with the efavirenz, emtricitabine, and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate regimen. The dolutegravir, emtricitabine, and tenofovir alafenamide fumarate regimen had the lowest frequency of composite adverse pregnancy outcomes and of neonatal deaths.

New biomarker combinations are the basis for increasingly complex diagnostic algorithms. Neoadjuvant combination therapy, often including targeted agents, is a standard of care (especially in HER2-positive and triple-negative breast cancer), and the basis for de-escalation of surgery in the breast and axilla and for risk-adapted post-neoadjuvant strategies. Radiotherapy remains an important cornerstone of breast cancer therapy, but de-escalation schemes have become the standard of care. ER-positive tumours are treated with 5-10 years of endocrine therapy and chemotherapy, based on an individual risk assessment. For metastatic breast cancer, standard therapy options include targeted approaches such as CDK4 and CDK6 inhibitors, PI3K inhibitors, PARP inhibitors, and anti-PD-L1 immunotherapy, depending on tumour type and molecular profile.     Acromiohumeral distance (AHD) has become both a diagnostic and prognostic parameter related to rotator cuff pathology which is always measured in a 2-dimensional plane. The purposes of this study were (1) to evaluate the regional AHD with MRI following open and arthroscopic rotator cuff repair and, (2) to investigate its association to the rotator cuff integrity following medium to large size rotator cuff repair with open and arthroscopic manner.

    A retrospective review of 112 patients who were treated for full-thickness medium to large size rotator cuff tears either by open repair (open group) or arthroscopic repair (arthroscopic group) was done. All patients included in the study are those with at least 12 and 18 months for the post-operative MRI and clinical follow-up. Propensity score matching was used to select controls matched for age, sex, body mass index, tear size, and affected site. There were 56 patients in each group with a mean age of 63.3years (range, 50 to 77years). The post-operative functional and radiologic outcomes for both groups were compared. AHD was measured at three regions of interest (ROI) with MRI and compared pre-and post-operatively.

    AHD was significantly greater in the open group when measured at the anterior third of the lateral acromion border compare to the arthroscopic group (p=0.005). The re-tear rate was affected by AHD at the anterior third of the lateral border of the acromion for the arthroscopic and open group (p=0.021, p=0.029). The AHD measured at the anterior and middle third of lateral acromion border were significantly greater in healed compared to the re-tear rotator cuff group (p=0.019, p=0.022).

In the study were included 58 patients with ME/CFS and 50 healthy controls. Virus-specific antibodies were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and viral genomic sequences in peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMCs) and plasma samples by nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR). We did not observe any significant differences in virus-specific immunoglobulin G and immunoglobulin M positivity rates between patients with ME/CFS and control group. In ME/CFS plasma samples, EBV DNA was found in 24.1%, CMV DNA in 3.4%, and HHV-6 DNA in 1.7% of samples. EBV DNA was detected in 4%, and CMV and HHV-6 DNA were not found in plasma samples of controls. The frequency of viral genome detection in PBMCs of patients and controls was 74% vs 78% for CMV, 81% vs 84% for EBV, and 82.8% vs 82% for HHV-6. The difference in frequency of EBV active infection in ME/CFS and control group was statistically significant (P = .0027). No ME/CFS and control individuals with active CMV and HHV-6 infection were observed. In conclusion, this study using both serological and PCR-based techniques for distinguishing between active and latent infection showed high rate of active EBV infection among patients with ME/CFS indicating that at least in a subset of cases, EBV is important factor for the development of disease. © 2020 The Authors. RESULTS The proband with E1702K exhibited repeated rhabdomyolysis, and the daughter showed laryngospasm and cyanosis. Functional analysis of the two mutations as well as another known heterozygous mutation (T1700_E1703del), all located on EF hand-like motif in CTerm, was conducted with whole-cell recording of heterologously expressed channel. All mutations displayed impaired fast inactivation. DISCUSSION The CTerm of Nav1.4 is vital for regulating fast inactivation. Techniques to reduce the risk of other transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) are warranted as recent ECP survivors are ineligible as routine blood donors. As part of an ongoing clinical trial to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of ECP, the impact of amotosalen/UVA pathogen reduction technology (PRT) on EBOV antibody characteristics was examined. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS Serum and plasma samples were collected from EVD-recovered subjects at multiple timepoints and evaluated by ELISA for antibodies to recombinant EBOV glycoprotein (GP) and irradiated whole EBOV antigen, as well as for EBOV microneutralization, classic plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) and EBOV pseudovirion neutralization assay (PsVNA) activity. RESULTS Six subjects donated 40 individual ECP units. Substantial antibody titers and neutralizing activity results were demonstrated but were generally lower for the ACD plasma samples compared to the serum samples. Anti-EBOV titers by all assays remained essentially unchanged after PRT. CONCLUSION Treatment of ECP with PRT to reduce the risk of TTI did not significantly reduce EBOV IgG antibody titers or neutralizing activity. Although ECP was used in the treatment of repatriated patients, no PRT units from this study were transfused to EVD patients. Full clinical examination was done, and tissue levels of retinoic acid receptor (RAR) and retinoid x receptor (RXR) were measured by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR).   • BACKGROUND YKL-40, a chitinase-like glycoprotein has been identified as a candidate tumor marker. The current study evaluated the clinical significance of plasma YKL-40 in esophageal cancer patients. METHODS We enrolled 127 esophageal cancer patients, 29 healthy controls. Plasma YKL-40 levels were measured through enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to evaluate the diagnostic efficiency of plasma YKL-40 in esophageal cancer patients. The correlations between plasma YKL-40 and clinicopathological characteristics of esophageal were analyzed. RESULTS Plasma YKL-40 levels were significantly higher in patients with lymph node metastasis than those that were non-metastatic (p = 0.005). Patients with tumor thrombus formation presented with significantly higher YKL-40 levels than those without thrombus formation (160.3 vs. 74.7 ng/mL, p = 0.012). YKL-40 levels in patients with advanced stage (III and IV) were significantly higher than those in the early stages (I and II, p = 0.016). ROC curve analysis showed that the area under curve was 0.909, and the best diagnostic threshold of YKL-40 for esophageal cancer was 80.6 ng/mL with 68.9% sensitivity and 96.6% specificity. CONCLUSIONS This study indicated that YKL-40 may be a biomarker for esophageal cancer and potential biomarker for identification of invasive esophageal cancer.BACKGROUND The emergence of the New Dehli metallo-beta-lactamase (NDM) gene in Enterobacteriaceae is responsible for multidrug resistance responsible for severe infections and serious morbidity in patients. Our study aimed to define the molecular characteristics and antibiogram of the NDM-1 producing Enterobacteriaceae. METHODS We isolated 370 individual enterobacteria from the clinical specimens collected from the two tertiary hospitals in Sakaka, Saudi Arabia. Bacterial isolation was performed using standard microbiological techniques and the Phoenix and Microscan WalkAway Plus automated analyzers. Bacterial strains were characterized by phenotypic methods and PCR, and DNA sequencing was used for the molecular characterization of NDM genes. RESULTS The blaNDM gene was detected among the 68 members of the Enterobacteriaceae including a single case of rarely reported Cedecea lapagei. METHODS This was a retrospective study of 109 patients newly diagnosed with HBV-DeCi. Univariate and multivariate regression models were used to determine risk factors for 90-day mortality. RESULTS The MPR was observed to be higher in nonsurvivors than in survivors. Multivariate analysis suggested that the model for end-stage liver disease score and MPR were independent predictors in HBV-DeCi patients. In recent years, more and more reports and studies paid attentions to procalcitonin (PCT) in respiratory infectious diseases and its clinical value has attracted increasing attention. The study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of the DECAF score combined with PCT in predicting admission of AECOPD patients to intensive care unit (ICU). METHODS We conducted a retrospective study. We analyzed data from 171 non-immune individuals over the age of 40 in this study. All patients received blood routine measurement and DECAF score calculation on admission. The primary outcomres were 0.61, 0.61, 0.56, and 0.91, respectively.     BACKGROUND YKL-40, a chitinase-like glycoprotein has been identified as a candidate tumor marker. The current study evaluated the clinical significance of plasma YKL-40 in esophageal cancer patients. METHODS We enrolled 127 esophageal cancer patients, 29 healthy controls. Plasma YKL-40 levels were measured through enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to evaluate the diagnostic efficiency of plasma YKL-40 in esophageal cancer patients. The correlations between plasma YKL-40 and clinicopathological characteristics of esophageal were analyzed. RESULTS Plasma YKL-40 levels were significantly higher in patients with lymph node metastasis than those that were non-metastatic (p = 0.005). Patients with tumor thrombus formation presented with significantly higher YKL-40 levels than those without thrombus formation (160.3 vs. 74.7 ng/mL, p = 0.012). YKL-40 levels in patients with advanced stage (III and IV) were significantly higher than those in the early stages (I and II, p = 0.016). ROC curve analysis showed that the area under curve was 0.909, and the best diagnostic threshold of YKL-40 for esophageal cancer was 80.6 ng/mL with 68.9% sensitivity and 96.6% specificity. Our study aimed to define the molecular characteristics and antibiogram of the NDM-1 producing Enterobacteriaceae. METHODS We isolated 370 individual enterobacteria from the clinical specimens collected from the two tertiary hospitals in Sakaka, Saudi Arabia. Bacterial isolation was performed using standard microbiological techniques and the Phoenix and Microscan WalkAway Plus automated analyzers. Bacterial strains were characterized by phenotypic methods and PCR, and DNA sequencing was used for the molecular characterization of NDM genes. RESULTS The blaNDM gene was detected among the 68 members of the Enterobacteriaceae including a single case of rarely reported Cedecea lapagei. The study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of the DECAF score combined with PCT in predicting admission of AECOPD patients to intensive care unit (ICU). METHODS We conducted a retrospective study. We analyzed data from 171 non-immune individuals over the age of 40 in this study. All patients received blood routine measurement and DECAF score calculation on admission. The primary outcomres were 0.61, 0.61, 0.56, and 0.91, respectively. The specificities of PCT, WBC, creatinine, and DECAF scores were 0.76, 0.67, 0.88 and 0.74, respectively. The variety of concepts and policies relating to yield increases fail to integrate an important constituent of production and human nutrition - biodiversity. We develop an analytical framework to unpack this biodiversity-production mutualism (BPM), which bridges the research fields of ecology and agroeconomics and makes the trade-off between food security and protection of biodiversity explicit. By applying the framework, the incorporation of agroecological principles in global food systems are quantifiable, informed assessments of green total factor productivity (TFP) are supported, and possible lock-ins of the global food system through overintensification and associated biodiversity loss can be avoided.
    Ultrasonography has been shown to be a useful tool for diagnosing pneumothorax in the hands of experts. After performing bronchopleural procedures, the recommendation is to perform chest radiography to rule out complications. Our objective was to determine the validity of thoracic ultrasonography to rule out pneumothorax after invasive procedures, conducted by pulmonologists without experience in this procedure.

    Our observational prospective study consecutively included patients who underwent transbronchial biopsy (TBB), evacuating thoracentesis (ECT) and/or transparietal pleural biopsies (TPB) who were indicated subsequent chest radiography to rule out complications. In all cases, the same pulmonologist who performed the technique performed an ultrasound immediately after the procedure. A diagnosis of pneumothorax was considered the presence of a lung point or the combination of the following signs absence of pleural sliding, absence of B-lines and presence of the «barcode» sign.

    We included 275 procedures (149 TBBs, 36 TPBs, 90 ECTs), which resulted in 14 (5.1%) iatrogenic pneumothoraxes. Ultrasonography presented a sensitivity of 78.5%, a specificity of 85% and a positive and negative predictive value of 22% and 98.6%, respectively. The predicted toxicity of a single pesticide compound was found to overwhelm the toxicity of other pesticides in the mixtures after concentrations were toxicity weighted. Mitochondrial dysfunction is an area with high potential. The neurobiological signaling connections between the gut microbiome and the central nervous system are incompletely understood. Multiple lines of evidence suggest that the gut microbiota participates in the pathogenesis of PD. Gut microbial dysbiosis may contribute to the loss of dopaminergic neurons through mitochondrial dysfunction. The intervention of gut microbial metabolites via the microbiota-gut-brain axis may serve as a promising therapeutic strategy for PD. In this narrative review, we summarize the potential roles of gut microbial dysbiosis in PD, with emphasis on microbial metabolites and mitochondrial function. We then review the possible ways in which microbial metabolites affect the central nervous system, as well as the impact of microbial metabolites on mitochondrial dysfunction. We finally discuss the possibility of gut microbiota as a therapeutic target for PD.This analytical, cross-sectional, observational study aimed to evaluate the perception of dentists working at the public system of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, regarding academic training to treat oral lesions, adoption of preventive measures for oral cancer, and attitude toward the need to perform oral biopsies. The sample consisted of questionnaires filled out by 192 dentists (153 women and 39 men) working in primary health care who participated in training activities on oral cancer diagnosis in July 2016. To enroll in the training activities, the professionals completed an online questionnaire to evaluate their perceptions regarding oral cancer issues. With respect to preventive measures, 96.88% of dentists reported performing full mouth examination, 87.50% reported providing tobacco cessation counseling, and 51.04% reported giving advice on excessive alcohol consumption. In addition, 72.40% and 44.79% of dentists considered, respectively, clinical training and theory instruction in oral medicine to be insufficient during undergraduate school. Only 8.33% reported performing biopsies in daily clinical routine, and almost 90% reported referring the patient to a specialist from the public system or universities. Lack of experience was the main reason not to perform a biopsy. The dentists in our sample recognize the importance of preventive measures for oral cancer, but few of them perform biopsies regularly. In this review, we first summarize the pathways through which natural microorganisms synthesize β-alanine. Then, the current research progress in the biological synthesis of β-alanine is also elaborated. Finally, we discuss the main problems and challenges in optimizing the biological pathways, offering perspectives on promising new biological approaches.
    Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in stable coronary artery disease (***) is commonly triggered by abnormal myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI). However, due to the possibilities of multivessel disease, serial stenoses and variability of coronary artery perfusion distribution, an opportunity exists to better align anatomic stenosis with perfusion abnormalities to improve revascularization decisions. This study aims to develop a multi-modality fusion approach to assist decision-making for PCI.

    Coronary arteries from fluoroscopic angiography (FA) were reconstructed into 3D artery anatomy. Left ventricular (LV) epicardial surface was extracted from SPECT. The artery anatomy and epicardial surface were non-rigidly fused. The accuracy of the 3D fusion was evaluated via both computer simulation and real patient data. Simulated FA and MPI were integrated and then compared with the ground truth from a digital phantom. The distance-based mismatch errors between simulated fluoroscopy and phantom arteries were 1.86 ± 1.43mm for left coronary arteries (LCA) and 2.21 ± 2.50mm for right coronary arteries (RCA). https://www.selleckchem.com/products/pd-1-pd-l1-inhibitor-1.html FA and SPECT images in 30 patients were integrated and then compared with the ground truth from CT angiograms. With the emergence of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis among the leading causes of end-stage liver disease and the steady rise of the age of liver transplant recipients, the burden of cardiovascular diseases has markedly increased in this population. Selecting appropriate liver transplant candidates is crucial due to the increasing demand for scarce donor organs. The use of noninvasive cardiac imaging for pre-operative assessment of the cardiovascular status of liver transplant recipients has been on the rise, yet the optimal assessment strategy remains an area of active debate. In this review, we examine the relevant literature pertaining to the diagnostic and prognostic applications of noninvasive cardiac imaging in this population. We also propose a simple literature-based evaluation algorithm for *** surveillance in liver transplant candidates.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is an area with high potential. The neurobiological signaling connections between the gut microbiome and the central nervous system are incompletely understood. Multiple lines of evidence suggest that the gut microbiota participates in the pathogenesis of PD. Gut microbial dysbiosis may contribute to the loss of dopaminergic neurons through mitochondrial dysfunction. The intervention of gut microbial metabolites via the microbiota-gut-brain axis may serve as a promising therapeutic strategy for PD. In this narrative review, we summarize the potential roles of gut microbial dysbiosis in PD, with emphasis on microbial metabolites and mitochondrial function. We then review the possible ways in which microbial metabolites affect the central nervous system, as well as the impact of microbial metabolites on mitochondrial dysfunction. We finally discuss the possibility of gut microbiota as a therapeutic target for PD.This analytical, cross-sectional, observational study aimed to evaluate the perception of dentists working at the public system of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, regarding academic training to treat oral lesions, adoption of preventive measures for oral cancer, and attitude toward the need to perform oral biopsies. The sample consisted of questionnaires filled out by 192 dentists (153 women and 39 men) working in primary health care who participated in training activities on oral cancer diagnosis in July 2016. To enroll in the training activities, the professionals completed an online questionnaire to evaluate their perceptions regarding oral cancer issues. With respect to preventive measures, 96.88% of dentists reported performing full mouth examination, 87.50% reported providing tobacco cessation counseling, and 51.04% reported giving advice on excessive alcohol consumption. In addition, 72.40% and 44.79% of dentists considered, respectively, clinical training and theory instruction in oral medicine to be insufficient during undergraduate school. Only 8.33% reported performing biopsies in daily clinical routine, and almost 90% reported referring the patient to a specialist from the public system or universities. Lack of experience was the main reason not to perform a biopsy. The dentists in our sample recognize the importance of preventive measures for oral cancer, but few of them perform biopsies regularly. With the depletion of fossil fuels and concerns regarding environmental issues, biological production of β-alanine has attracted more attention relative to chemical methods. In this review, we first summarize the pathways through which natural microorganisms synthesize β-alanine. Then, the current research progress in the biological synthesis of β-alanine is also elaborated. Finally, we discuss the main problems and challenges in optimizing the biological pathways, offering perspectives on promising new biological approaches. Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in stable coronary artery disease (CAD) is commonly triggered by abnormal myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI). However, due to the possibilities of multivessel disease, serial stenoses and variability of coronary artery perfusion distribution, an opportunity exists to better align anatomic stenosis with perfusion abnormalities to improve revascularization decisions. This study aims to develop a multi-modality fusion approach to assist decision-making for PCI. Coronary arteries from fluoroscopic angiography (FA) were reconstructed into 3D artery anatomy. Left ventricular (LV) epicardial surface was extracted from SPECT. The artery anatomy and epicardial surface were non-rigidly fused. The accuracy of the 3D fusion was evaluated via both computer simulation and real patient data. Simulated FA and MPI were integrated and then compared with the ground truth from a digital phantom. With the emergence of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis among the leading causes of end-stage liver disease and the steady rise of the age of liver transplant recipients, the burden of cardiovascular diseases has markedly increased in this population. Selecting appropriate liver transplant candidates is crucial due to the increasing demand for scarce donor organs. The use of noninvasive cardiac imaging for pre-operative assessment of the cardiovascular status of liver transplant recipients has been on the rise, yet the optimal assessment strategy remains an area of active debate. In this review, we examine the relevant literature pertaining to the diagnostic and prognostic applications of noninvasive cardiac imaging in this population. We also propose a simple literature-based evaluation algorithm for CAD surveillance in liver transplant candidates.

The resulting model replicates the original decision behavior while displaying new features and characteristics. In this paper, we apply this approach to a use case in the context of credit scoring. We use a private residential mortgage default dataset. We show that differential replication through copying can be exploited to adapt a given solution to the changing demands of a constrained environment such as that of the financial market. In particular, we show how copying can be used to replicate the decision behavior not only of a model, but also of a full pipeline. As a result, we can ensure the decomposability of the attributes used to provide explanations for credit scoring models and reduce the time-to-market delivery of these solutions.The Mayten tree (Maytenus boaria Mol.), a native plant of Chile that grows under environmentally limiting conditions, was historically harvested to extract an edible oil, and may represent an opportunity to expand current vegetable oil production. Around 65 peaks belonging to sugars, fatty acids, esters and organic acids were identified by GC-MS. White mahlab from Egypt is rich in fatty acids, e.g., oleic and α-linolenic acids. Some acyl esters, e.g., glycerylmonostearate and n-butylcaprylate, characterized mahlab cultivars from various origins. A total of 135 volatiles were identified, with organic acids and aldehydes the most abundant. Aldehydes were the most discriminatory in seed origin and in accounting for its distinct aroma. Several roasting indices were identified, viz. 1-octanol, γ-caprolactone and isomintlactone. A direct relationship between furans and fatty acids was rationalized by cyclic transformation of the latter into furan derivatives.   • We investigate the mechanical response of jammed packings of repulsive, frictionless spherical particles undergoing isotropic compression. Prior simulations of the soft-particle model, where the repulsive interactions scale as a power law in the interparticle overlap with exponent α, have found that the ensemble-averaged shear modulus 〈G(P)〉 increases with pressure P as ∼P^(α-3/2)/(α-1) at large pressures. 〈G〉 has two key contributions (1) continuous variations as a function of pressure along geometrical families, for which the interparticle contact network does not change, and (2) discontinuous jumps during compression that arise from changes in the contact network. Using numerical simulations, we show that the form of the shear modulus G^f for jammed packings within near-isostatic geometrical families is largely determined by the affine response G^f∼G_a^f, where G_a^f/G_a0=(P/P_0)^(α-2)/(α-1)-P/P_0, P_0∼N^-2(α-1) is the characteristic pressure at which G_a^f=0, G_a0 is a constant that sets the scale of the shear modulus, and N is the number of particles. For near-isostatic geometrical families that persist to large pressures, deviations from this form are caused by significant nonaffine particle motion. We further show that the ensemble-averaged shear modulus 〈G(P)〉 is not simply a sum of two power laws, but 〈G(P)〉∼(P/P_c)^a, where a≈(α-2)/(α-1) in the P→0 limit and 〈G(P)〉∼(P/P_c)^b, where b≳(α-3/2)/(α-1), above a characteristic pressure that scales as P_c∼N^-2(α-1).Molecular expressions for thermodynamic properties and derivatives of the Gibbs energy up to third order in the isobaric-isothermal (NpT) ensemble are systematically derived using the methodology developed by Lustig for the microcanonical and canonical ensembles [J. The biological purpose of this expanded structure is unclear, but it may be beneficial due to the increased expressive power of the network. In this work, we show that certain ways of expanding a neural network can improve its generalization performance even when the expanded structure is pruned after the learning period. To study this setting, we use a teacher-student framework where a perceptron teacher network generates labels corrupted with small amounts of noise. We then train a student network structurally matched to the teacher. In this scenario, the student can achieve optimal accuracy if given the teacher's synaptic weights. We find that sparse expansion of the input layer of a student perceptron network both increases its capacity and improves the generalization performance of the network when learning a noisy rule from a teacher perceptron when the expansion is pruned after learning. We find similar behavior when the expanded units are stochastic and uncorrelated with the input and analyze this network in the mean-field limit. We study several broadly applicable dimensionless measures of stability and mechanical disorder in simple computer glasses, in which the relative strength of attractive interactions-referred to as "glass stickiness"-can be readily tuned. We show that increasing glass stickiness can result in the decrease of various quantifiers of mechanical disorder, on both macro- and microscopic scales, with a pair of intriguing exceptions to this rule. Interestingly, in some cases strong attractions can lead to a reduction of the number density of soft, quasilocalized modes, by up to an order of magnitude, and to a substantial decrease in their core size, similar to the effects of thermal annealing on elasticity observed in recent works. Contrary to the behavior of canonical glass models, we provide compelling evidence indicating that the stabilization mechanism in our sticky-sphere glasses stems predominantly from the self-organized depletion of interactions featuring large, negative stiffnesses. Finally, we establish a fundamental link between macroscopic and microscopic quantifiers of mechanical disorder, which we motivate via scaling arguments. Future research directions are discussed.

In this work, we show that certain ways of expanding a neural network can improve its generalization performance even when the expanded structure is pruned after the learning period. To study this setting, we use a teacher-student framework where a perceptron teacher network generates labels corrupted with small amounts of noise. We then train a student network structurally matched to the teacher. In this scenario, the student can achieve optimal accuracy if given the teacher's synaptic weights. We find that sparse expansion of the input layer of a student perceptron network both increases its capacity and improves the generalization performance of the network when learning a noisy rule from a teacher perceptron when the expansion is pruned after learning. We find similar behavior when the expanded units are stochastic and uncorrelated with the input and analyze this network in the mean-field limit. We show that this effect is closely related to the addition of slack variables in artificial neural networks and suggest possible implications for artificial and biological neural networks.Recent literature indicates that attractive interactions between particles of a dense liquid play a secondary role in determining its bulk mechanical properties. Here we show that, in contrast with their apparent unimportance to the bulk mechanics of dense liquids, attractive interactions can have a major effect on macro- and microscopic elastic properties of glassy solids. We study several broadly applicable dimensionless measures of stability and mechanical disorder in simple computer glasses, in which the relative strength of attractive interactions-referred to as "glass stickiness"-can be readily tuned. We show that increasing glass stickiness can result in the decrease of various quantifiers of mechanical disorder, on both macro- and microscopic scales, with a pair of intriguing exceptions to this rule. Interestingly, in some cases strong attractions can lead to a reduction of the number density of soft, quasilocalized modes, by up to an order of magnitude, and to a substantial decrease in their core size, similar to the effects of thermal annealing on elasticity observed in recent works. Contrary to the behavior of canonical glass models, we provide compelling evidence indicating that the stabilization mechanism in our sticky-sphere glasses stems predominantly from the self-organized depletion of interactions featuring large, negative stiffnesses. Finally, we establish a fundamental link between macroscopic and microscopic quantifiers of mechanical disorder, which we motivate via scaling arguments. Future research directions are discussed.
