  • Elegant asymmetric synthesis of hasubanan alkaloids have been developed over the past decades. However, a divergent approach leading to all three sub-classes of this family of natural products remains unknown. We report herein the realization of such an endeavor by accomplishing enantioselective total syntheses of four representative members. The synthesis is characterized by catalytic enantioselective construction of the tricyclic compounds from which three different intramolecular C-N bond forming processes leading to three topologically different hasubanan alkaloids are developed. An aza-Michael addition is used for the construction of the aza-[4.4.3]-propellane structure of (-)-cepharamine, whereas an oxidation/double deprotection/intramolecular hemiaminal forming sequence is developed to forge the bridged 6/6/6/6 tetracycle of (-)-cepharatines A and C and a domino bromination/double deprotection/cyclization sequence allows the build-up of the 6/6/5/5 fused tetracyclic structure of (-)-sinoracutine.Amines are a class of compounds of essential importance in organic synthesis, pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. Due to the importance of chirality in many practical applications of amines, enantioselective syntheses of amines are of high current interest. Here, we wish to report the development of (R,Ra)-N-Nap-Pyrinap and (R,Sa)-N-Nap-Pyrinap ligands working with CuBr to catalyze the enantioselective A3-coupling of terminal alkynes, aldehydes, and amines affording optically active propargylic amines, which are platform molecules for the effective derivatization to different chiral amines. With a catalyst loading as low as 0.1 mol% even in gram scale reactions, this protocol is applied to the late stage modification of some drug molecules with highly sensitive functionalities and the asymmetric synthesis of the tubulin polymerization inhibitor (S)-(-)-N-acetylcolchinol in four steps.   • Wildfires have increased in size and frequency in recent decades in many biomes, but have they also become more severe? This question remains under-examined despite fire severity being a critical aspect of fire regimes that indicates fire impacts on ecosystem attributes and associated post-fire recovery. We conducted a retrospective analysis of wildfires larger than 1000 ha in south-eastern Australia to examine the extent and spatial pattern of high-severity burned areas between 1987 and 2017. High-severity maps were generated from Landsat remote sensing imagery. Total and proportional high-severity burned area increased through time. The number of high-severity patches per year remained unchanged but variability in patch size increased, and patches became more aggregated and more irregular in shape. Our results confirm that wildfires in southern Australia have become more severe. This shift in fire regime may have critical consequences for ecosystem dynamics, as fire-adapted temperate forests are more likely to be burned at high severities relative to historical ranges, a trend that seems set to continue under projections of a hotter, drier climate in south-eastern Australia.
    Obesity is a major public health with increasing numbers of obese individuals are at risk for kidney disease. However, the validity of serum creatinine-based glomerular filtration rate (GFR) estimating equations in obese population is yet to be determined.

    We evaluated the performance of the reexpressed Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD), reexpressed MDRD with Thai racial factor, Thai estimated GFR (eGFR) as well as Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equations among obese patients, defined as body mass index (BMI) ≥25 kg/m2 with the reference measured GFR (mGFR) determined by 99mTc-diethylene triamine penta-acetic acid (99mTc-DTPA) plasma clearance method. Serum creatinine levels were measured using standardized enzymatic method simultaneously with GFR measurement. The statistical methods in assessing agreement for continuous data including total deviation index (TDI), concordance correlation coefficient (CCC), and coverage probability (CP) for each estimating equation wted by TDI, CCC, and CP were low in the subset of patients with BMI ≥35 kg/m2.

We observe pronounced country-specific characteristics and quantify them using an indicator resembling the Gini-index. As demonstrated by a robustness test, the Gini-index for each country arise from a compound distribution between the population and emissions which differs among countries. Relating these indices with the degree of socio-economic development measured by per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at purchase power parity, we find a strong negative correlation between the two quantities with a Pearson correlation coefficient of -0.71. More specifically, this implies that in developing countries locations with large population tend to emit relatively more CO2, and in developed countries the opposite tends to be the case. Based on the relation to urban scaling, we discuss the implications for CO2 emissions from cities. Our results show that general statements with regard to the (in)efficiency of large cities should be avoided as it is subject to the socio-economic development of respective countries. Concerning the political relevance, our results suggest a differentiated spatial prioritization in deploying climate change mitigation measures in cities for developed and developing countries.
    Little is known about the effects of HIV reservoir research at the end of life on staff members involved. Staff members' perceptions and experiences were assessed related to their involvement in the Last Gift, a rapid autopsy study at the University of California San Diego enrolling people living with HIV who are terminally ill and have a desire to contribute to HIV cure-related research.

    Two focus group discussions consisting of clinical (n = 7) and rapid research autopsy (n = 8) staff members were conducted to understand the perspectives of staff members and the impact the Last Gift rapid autopsy study had on them. The total sample consisted of 66.7% females and 33.3% males and was ethnically diverse (66.7% Caucasian, 6.7% African American, 20.0% Asian descent, 6.7% Hispanic descent and American Indian) with a range of experience in the HIV field from 1 year to 30 years.

    Qualitative focus group data revealed five major themes underlying study staff members' multilayered mental and practical involvemen of life. The study's potential reproducibility depends on a robust research infrastructure with established, interdependent clinical and rapid autopsy teams, continuous community engagement, and an ethical and well-informed engagement process with people living with HIV.
    Understanding staff members' nuanced emotional and procedural experiences is crucial to the Last Gift study's sustainability and will inform similar cure research studies conducted with people living with HIV at the end of life.   • We aimed to assess the prevalence of mitral annulus disjunction (MAD) and to explore the association with aortic disease and mitral valve surgery in patients with Marfan syndrome (MFS) and Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS).

    We included consecutive MFS patients fulfilling Revised Ghent Criteria and LDS patients fulfilling Loeys-Dietz Revised Nosology. MAD was identified by echocardiography and was quantified as the longitudinal distance from the ventricular myocardium to the hinge point of the posterior mitral leaflet. Aortic events were defined as aortic dissection or prophylactic aortic surgery. We recorded the need of mitral valve surgery including mitral valve repair or replacement. We included 168 patients (103 with MFS and 65 with LDS). The prevalence of MAD was 41%. MAD was present in all age groups. Aortic events occurred in 112 (67%) patients (27 with dissections and 85 with prophylactic surgical interventions). Patients with MAD were younger at aortic event than those without MAD (log rank = 0.02) Patients with aortic events had greater MAD distance in posterolateral wall [8 (7-10) mm vs. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/cefodizime-sodium.html 7 (6-8) mm, P = 0.04].     Gene panel testing by massive parallel sequencing has increased the diagnostic yield but also the number of variants of uncertain significance. Clinical interpretation of genomic data requires expertise for each gene and disease. Heterozygous ATM pathogenic variants increase the risk of cancer, particularly breast cancer. For this reason, ATM is included in most hereditary cancer panels. It is a large gene, showing a high number of variants, most of them of uncertain significance. Hence, we initiated a collaborative effort to improve and standardize variant classification for the ATM gene.

    Six independent laboratories collected information from 766 ATM variant carriers harboring 283 different variants. Data were submitted in a consensus template form, variant nomenclature and clinical information were curated, and monthly team conferences were established to review and adapt American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics/Association for Molecular Pathology (ACMG/AMP) criteria to ATM, which were used to classify 50 representative variants.

    Amid 283 different variants, 99 appeared more than once, 35 had differences in classification among laboratories. Refinement of ACMG/AMP criteria to ATM involved specification for twenty-one criteria and adjustment of strength for fourteen others. Afterwards, 50 variants carried by 254 index cases were classified with the established framework resulting in a consensus classification for all of them and a reduction in the number of variants of uncertain significance from 58% to 42%.

    We aimed to assess the prevalence of mitral annulus disjunction (MAD) and to explore the association with aortic disease and mitral valve surgery in patients with Marfan syndrome (MFS) and Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS). We included consecutive MFS patients fulfilling Revised Ghent Criteria and LDS patients fulfilling Loeys-Dietz Revised Nosology. MAD was identified by echocardiography and was quantified as the longitudinal distance from the ventricular myocardium to the hinge point of the posterior mitral leaflet. Aortic events were defined as aortic dissection or prophylactic aortic surgery. We recorded the need of mitral valve surgery including mitral valve repair or replacement. We included 168 patients (103 with MFS and 65 with LDS). The prevalence of MAD was 41%. MAD was present in all age groups. Aortic events occurred in 112 (67%) patients (27 with dissections and 85 with prophylactic surgical interventions). Patients with MAD were younger at aortic event than those without MAD (log rank = 0.02) Patients with aortic events had greater MAD distance in posterolateral wall [8 (7-10) mm vs. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/cefodizime-sodium.html 7 (6-8) mm, P = 0.04]. Rather than applying one preventive strategy to all at-risk patients, we can now adapt our strategy at the individual patient level. Antiviral prophylaxis or a strict pre-emptive strategy may be optimal for patients at the highest risk for CMV, while patients at lower risk may benefit particularly from pre-emptive monitoring and the administration of therapy only if needed.   • Bubbles generated by acoustic cavitation may be efficient in light production by direct emission (sonoluminescence) or indirect emission (sonochemiluminescence) depending on operating parameters such as acoustic pressure and surface tension. These conditions are quite difficult to reach at very high frequencies, even by concentrating the acoustic power at a given location via focusing the acoustic field thanks to the transducer shape (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound). The current work aims at probing the cavitation bubble behaviour under short frequency sweeps by monitoring sonochemiluminescence and sonoluminescence activities. When the frequency was swept in reverse (negative sweep), an enhancement in the SCL, relative to the SCL observed under a single frequency irradiation, was observed. Conversely, a positive frequency sweep resulted in the quenching of SCL intensity. The degree of SCL enhancement and quenching was also dependent on the rate at which the frequency was being swept and on the change in the size of cavitation bubbles. The size of cavitation bubbles varied with varying starting sweep frequency (3.4, 3.6 and 4.2 MHz), affecting both SCL and sonoluminescence (SL) emissions. The addition of a surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulphate) affected the observed results, possibly due to its influence on coalescence between cavitation bubbles. The results suggest that the enhancement and quenching are related to the response of bubbles generated by the starting frequency to the direction of the frequency sweep and the influence of the sweep rate on growth and coalescence of bubbles, which affected the population of the active bubbles. This work aimed to verify the existence of patterns on the electrophysiological systemic responses of tomato plants inoculated with a pathogenic fungus in an environment with controlled light and temperature. Electrical signalling was measured before and after inoculation in the same plants, and data were analysed with time series techniques and approximate multi-scale entropy (ApEn). Machine learning algorithms were utilised in order to classify data before and after infection throughout the five days of experiments. The obtained results have shown that it is possible to distinguish differences in the plant's electrome activity before and after the fungus inoculation. In some cases, we have found scale invariance quantified by the power law decay in the distribution histogram. We also found a higher degree of internal organisation quantified by ApEn. The results of the classification algorithms achieved higher accuracy of infection detection at the initial stage of pathogen recognition by the plant. Besides, this study showed evidence that long-distance electrical signalling is likely involved in the plant-pathogen interaction, since signals were obtained in the stem and the inoculum applied on the plant leaves. This might be useful for the early detection of plant infections. While in January 2012, Denmark increased the long-standing tax on sugary soft drinks, the tax was cut by half in July 2013 and then completely repealed in January 2014. In this study, we examine whether increases and cuts of the soft drink tax lead to similar over- or under-shifting to prices and to similar demand responses. We use longitudinal scanner data of 1,282 Danish households to estimate within-product changes in prices and within-household changes in purchase quantity. The tax hike was overshifted by a factor of 1.6-1.8, while the tax repeal was fully passed through with a factor of 0.9-1.2. On average, consumption was 13.4 percent lower the year after the tax increase compared to the year before. The repeal of the tax was associated with an increase in purchase quantity of 31.0 percent. This is equivalent to price elasticities of -1.3 for both tax hikes and cuts. The results suggest that consumers react similarly to tax cuts compared to tax increases. Furthermore, the increase in purchases following a tax cut has no limiting effect on purchases of other beverages suggesting an increase in the intake of calories. This might have implications for health in countries that consider repealing current taxes on soft drinks. Spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) are defined as the tissue-specific stem cells in the testes that produce sperm and support life-long spermatogenesis. A culture microenvironment could convert mouse SSCs from unipotent to pluripotent states; however, the underlying mechanism is unclear. NANOG has been considered the decisive transcriptional factor for pluripotency transition of stem cells, but NANOG is not expressed in SSCs. Here, we investigated whether NANOG overexpression could result in SSCs being converted into a pluripotent state. We found that rare NANOG-positive cells could be detected in spermatogonia, pachytene spermatocytes, and even round spermatids in mouse testes, and that the induction of NANOG could promote the proliferation of cultured SSCs in vitro and partially compensate for the role of the growth factor GDNF. Although beneficial for plant survival, active growth inhibition is often undesirable for crop productivity. However, the role of catheter ablation in HF with a preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is less clear. We performed a literature search and systematic review of studies that compared AF recurrence at one year after catheter ablation of AF in patients with HFpEF versus those with HFrEF. Risk ratio (RR; where a RR less then 1.0 favors the HFpEF group) and mean difference (MD; where MD less then 0 favors the HFpEF group) 95% confidence intervals (CI) were measured for dichotomous and continuous variables, respectively. Six studies with a total of 1,505 patients were included, of which 764 (51%) had HFpEF and 741 (49%) had HFrEF. Patients with HFpEF experienced similar recurrence of AF 1 year after ablation on or off antiarrhythmic drugs compared with those with HFrEF (RR 1.01; 95% CI 0.76, 1.35). Fluoroscopy time was significantly shorter in the HFpEF group (MD -5.42; 95% CI -8.51, -2.34), but there was no significant difference in procedure time (MD 1.74; 95% CI -11.89, 15.37) or periprocedural adverse events between groups (RR 0.84; 95% CI 0.54,1.32). There was no significant difference in hospitalizations between groups (MD 1.18; 95% CI 0.90, 1.55), but HFpEF patients experienced significantly less mortality (MD 0.41; 95% CI 0.18, 0.94). Here, we use COI mtDNA amplicons from monthly samples of environmental DNA to survey 221 planktonic taxa along a gradient of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and carbonate chemistry in nearshore marine habitat. The result is a high-resolution picture of changes in ecological communities using a technique replicable across a wide variety of ecosystems. We estimate community-level differences associated with time, space and environmental variables, and use these results to forecast near-term community changes due to warming and ocean acidification. We find distinct communities in warmer and more acidified conditions, with overall reduced richness in diatom assemblages and increased richness in dinoflagellates. Individual taxa finding more suitable habitat in near-future waters are more taxonomically varied and include the ubiquitous coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi and the harmful dinoflagellate Alexandrium sp. These results suggest foundational changes for nearshore food webs under near-future conditions.Climate change is altering the biogeochemical and physical characteristics of the Arctic marine environment, which impacts sea ice algal and phytoplankton bloom dynamics and the vertical transport of these carbon sources to benthic communities. Little is known about whether the contribution of sea ice-derived carbon to benthic fauna and nitrogen cycling has changed over multiple decades in concert with receding sea ice. We combined compound-specific stable isotope analysis of amino acids with highly branched isoprenoid diatom lipid biomarkers using archived (1982-2016) tissue of benthivorous Atlantic walrus to examine temporal trends of sea ice-derived carbon, nitrogen isotope baseline and trophic position of Atlantic walrus at high- and mid-latitudes in the Canadian Arctic. Associated with an 18% sea ice decline in the mid-Arctic, sea ice-derived carbon contribution to Atlantic walrus decreased by 75% suggesting a strong decoupling of sea ice-benthic habitats. By contrast, a nearly exclusive amount of sea ice-derived carbon was maintained in high-Arctic Atlantic walrus (98% in 1996 and 89% in 2006) despite a similar percentage in sea ice reduction. Nitrogen isotope baseline or the trophic position of Atlantic walrus did not change over time at either location. These findings indicate latitudinal differences in the restructuring of carbon energy sources used by Atlantic walrus and their benthic prey, and in turn a change in Arctic marine ecosystem functioning between sea ice-pelagic-benthic habitats.

However, the role of catheter ablation in HF with a preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is less clear. We performed a literature search and systematic review of studies that compared AF recurrence at one year after catheter ablation of AF in patients with HFpEF versus those with HFrEF. Risk ratio (RR; where a RR less then 1.0 favors the HFpEF group) and mean difference (MD; where MD less then 0 favors the HFpEF group) 95% confidence intervals (CI) were measured for dichotomous and continuous variables, respectively. Six studies with a total of 1,505 patients were included, of which 764 (51%) had HFpEF and 741 (49%) had HFrEF. Patients with HFpEF experienced similar recurrence of AF 1 year after ablation on or off antiarrhythmic drugs compared with those with HFrEF (RR 1.01; 95% CI 0.76, 1.35). Fluoroscopy time was significantly shorter in the HFpEF group (MD -5.42; 95% CI -8.51, -2.34), but there was no significant difference in procedure time (MD 1.74; 95% CI -11.89, 15.37) or periprocedural adverse events between groups (RR 0.84; 95% CI 0.54,1.32). There was no significant difference in hospitalizations between groups (MD 1.18; 95% CI 0.90, 1.55), but HFpEF patients experienced significantly less mortality (MD 0.41; 95% CI 0.18, 0.94). Here, we use COI mtDNA amplicons from monthly samples of environmental DNA to survey 221 planktonic taxa along a gradient of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and carbonate chemistry in nearshore marine habitat. The result is a high-resolution picture of changes in ecological communities using a technique replicable across a wide variety of ecosystems. We estimate community-level differences associated with time, space and environmental variables, and use these results to forecast near-term community changes due to warming and ocean acidification. We find distinct communities in warmer and more acidified conditions, with overall reduced richness in diatom assemblages and increased richness in dinoflagellates. Individual taxa finding more suitable habitat in near-future waters are more taxonomically varied and include the ubiquitous coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi and the harmful dinoflagellate Alexandrium sp. Little is known about whether the contribution of sea ice-derived carbon to benthic fauna and nitrogen cycling has changed over multiple decades in concert with receding sea ice. We combined compound-specific stable isotope analysis of amino acids with highly branched isoprenoid diatom lipid biomarkers using archived (1982-2016) tissue of benthivorous Atlantic walrus to examine temporal trends of sea ice-derived carbon, nitrogen isotope baseline and trophic position of Atlantic walrus at high- and mid-latitudes in the Canadian Arctic. Associated with an 18% sea ice decline in the mid-Arctic, sea ice-derived carbon contribution to Atlantic walrus decreased by 75% suggesting a strong decoupling of sea ice-benthic habitats. By contrast, a nearly exclusive amount of sea ice-derived carbon was maintained in high-Arctic Atlantic walrus (98% in 1996 and 89% in 2006) despite a similar percentage in sea ice reduction. Nitrogen isotope baseline or the trophic position of Atlantic walrus did not change over time at either location. These findings indicate latitudinal differences in the restructuring of carbon energy sources used by Atlantic walrus and their benthic prey, and in turn a change in Arctic marine ecosystem functioning between sea ice-pelagic-benthic habitats.

A significantly increased risk for HSVE was associated with the AG genotype (OR = 1.73, 95%CI = 1.03-2.9, P = 0.03) and AA genotype (OR = 2.96, 95%CI = 1.04-8.4, P = 0.04) of nNOS 84G →A locus. In case of nNOS 276C→T variation, HSVE risk was linked to CT genotype (OR = 1.79, 95%CI = 1.07-3.0, P = 0.03) and TT genotype (OR = 3.6, 95%CI = 1.2-10.8, P = 0.02). Patients with poor outcome either had homo or heterozygous genotype for both SNPs, but separate genotype analysis could not show significance. The administration of DOXO by means of these MNPs resulted in the enhancement of cell death respect to the free drug administration. Chromatin compaction and cytoplasmic protrusions were observed. Mitochondrial transmembrane potential disruption and increased PARP protein cleavage confirmed apoptosis. The nanosystem was also tested as a vectoring tool by exposing it to the stimuli of a static magnetic field in vitro. CRC-related magnetic nanotechnology still remains in pre-clinical trials. In this context, this contribution expands the knowledge of the behavior of MNPs in contact with in vitro models and proposes the nanodevices studied here as potential theranostic agents for the monitoring of the progress of CRC and the evolution of its treatment.
    The prognostic significance of serial echocardiography and its rate of change in children with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is incompletely defined.

    We retrospectively analysed up to 4 serial echocardiograms. Associations between mortality/transplant and echocardiographic parameters over time and between outcomes and the rate of change of echocardiographic parameters were analysed. Estimation of patient-specific intercepts and slopes was done using linear regression models.

    Fifty-seven DCM children were studied (50% male; median age, 0.6 year; average follow-up, 2.1 ± 2.4 years). The median time to transplant or death was 2.0 years. Increased left ventricular (LV) diastolic (LVEDD) and systolic (LVESD) dimensions and myocardial performance index (MPI) were associated with increased mortality and transplant risk. Increased LV ejection fraction, mitral E-deceleration time, right ventricular (RV) fractional area change, and tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion were associated with reduced mortality and transplant risk.

  • Microplastics (MPs) and fungicides have been recognized as two main pollutants in ecological environments, especially in aqueous ecosystems. In this study, the adsorption behavior of three typical strobilurins (azoxystrobin, picoxystrobin, and pyraclostrobin) on polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene (PE) was investigated, and the effects of adsorption on the residual behavior and bioavailability of pyraclostrobin were evaluated. The results showed that MPs had strong adsorption capacity for the three kinds of strobilurins. Under similar conditions, the adsorption capacity was the highest for pyraclostrobin, followed by picoxystrobin and azoxystrobin, which was consistent with their octanol-water partition coefficients. Moreover, the adsorption capacity of PS was slightly higher than that of PE. The pH of aqueous solution had little effect on adsorption capacity, while an increase in ionic strength increased the adsorption capacity of azoxystrobin and picoxystrobin. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/Menadione.html The Fourier transform infrared spectra of MPs showed that no new chemical groups were formed during the adsorption process. Thus, it is speculated that hydrophobic interactions may be the driving force behind the adsorption of strobilurins on the MPs. The cyanoacetamide derivatives were subjected to cyclization to produce N-substituted 2-pyridone derivatives under conventional heating and by an ultrasonic method as well. The ultrasonic method afforded the products in less reaction time with high yields and purities compared to the conventional method, as observed from their spectral data. N-(4-Carboxy phenyl)-4,6-dimethyl-3-cyano-2-pyridone was coupled with different amino acid esters by the OxymaPure/DIC methodology under traditional and ultrasonic conditions. Again, ultrasonication assisted the coupling step and afforded the products with higher yields and purities compared to the traditional method. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, NMR (1H and 13C), elemental analysis, and LC-MS were used to determine the structures of all compounds. Finally, a feature of this protocol is exploring the utilization of ultrasonication as an eco-friendly alternative conventional heating method for N-cyanoacylation and synthesis of N-substituted pyridinone derivatives and as a coupling method for the formation of an amide bond, which might be of interest for many researchers.A sol/gel curing method is used in this work to synthesize hybrid partially bio-based polyhydroxyurethanes (PHUs) from dicarbonates derived from glycerol and various diamines. The method consists of end-capping the PHU prepolymers with moisture-sensitive groups, so sealants and adhesives can be produced from partially sustainable hybrid PHUs (HPHUs), similar to their preparation from end-capped conventional polyurethanes. Diglycerol dicarbonate (DGC) is synthesized and polymerized with different diamines of various chain lengths, and the resulting structural and thermal properties of the PHUs are qualitatively and quantitively characterized. This characterization led to two potential candidates PHU 4, made of DGC and a poly(propylene glycol) diamine, and PHU 10, prepared from DGC and a poly(dimethylsiloxane) diamine. These polymers, with respective relative number-average molecular weights of 3200 and 7400 g/mol, are end-capped and left to cure under ambient lab conditions (22 °C and 40-50% humidity), and the curing processes are monitored rheologically. Notably, moisture curing does not require any catalyst. The chemical stability of the resulting hybrid PHUs (HPHUs) 4 and 10 in pure water is investigated to check the viability of applying them under outdoor conditions. Only HPHU 10 is found to be resistant to water and shows hydrophobicity with a contact angle of 109°. Tensile tests are conducted on HPHU 10 samples cured under lab conditions for a week and others cured for another week while being immersed in water. The mechanical properties, tensile strength and elongation at break, improve with the samples cured in water, indicating the high-water repellency of HPHU 10.In this study, novel ternary composites were prepared, including biodegradable poly(ethylene succinate) (PESu), poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), and graphene oxide (GO). We have conducted a comprehensive study on whether GO can successfully promote the crystallization behaviors of PESu in the ternary composites. The results of isothermal crystallization demonstrated that with the increase of GO content in the composite (at a fixed PESu/PEG ratio), the Avrami rate constant k gradually increased, indicating that the crystallization rate was faster when GO was added to the composite. The same phenomenon was also found for nonisothermal crystallization. It was found that the Mo model can adequately describe the nonisothermal crystallization behaviors of the composites. The analyses demonstrated that the F(T) value estimated from the Mo model decreased when the GO content was increased. This result implied that GO promoted the nonisothermal crystallization of PESu in the ternary PESu/PEG/GO composites. Discussions on nucleation activity and microscopy observations confirmed that GO can act as a nucleation agent to further enhance the crystallization of the composites. The significant nucleation effect of GO on PESu in its novel ternary composite was first discovered in this study.β-Thujaplicin possess a variety of biological activities. The use of modified biological nanoparticles (NPs) to develop novel anti-influenza drugs has increased in recent years. Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) with antiviral activity have attracted increasing attention for biomedical intervention. Functionalized SeNPs by β-thujaplicin (Se@TP) surface modified with superior antiviral activity were synthesized in this study. Compared to a virus group (43%), when treated with Se@TP (88%), the cell survival rate of **** cells was 45% higher. Se@TP could inhibit H1N1 from infecting Madin-Darby canine kidney (****) cells and block chromatin condensation and DNA fragmentation. Se@TP obviously prevented **** cells from generating reactive oxygen species. Furthermore, Se@TP prevents lung injury in H1N1-infected **** through eosin staining and hematoxylin in vivo. Mechanistic investigation revealed that Se@TP inhibited H1N1 influenza virus from infecting **** cells through induction of apoptosis via suppressing AKT and p53 signaling pathways through immunohistochemical assay.

Diglycerol dicarbonate (DGC) is synthesized and polymerized with different diamines of various chain lengths, and the resulting structural and thermal properties of the PHUs are qualitatively and quantitively characterized. This characterization led to two potential candidates PHU 4, made of DGC and a poly(propylene glycol) diamine, and PHU 10, prepared from DGC and a poly(dimethylsiloxane) diamine. These polymers, with respective relative number-average molecular weights of 3200 and 7400 g/mol, are end-capped and left to cure under ambient lab conditions (22 °C and 40-50% humidity), and the curing processes are monitored rheologically. We have conducted a comprehensive study on whether GO can successfully promote the crystallization behaviors of PESu in the ternary composites. The results of isothermal crystallization demonstrated that with the increase of GO content in the composite (at a fixed PESu/PEG ratio), the Avrami rate constant k gradually increased, indicating that the crystallization rate was faster when GO was added to the composite. The same phenomenon was also found for nonisothermal crystallization. It was found that the Mo model can adequately describe the nonisothermal crystallization behaviors of the composites. The analyses demonstrated that the F(T) value estimated from the Mo model decreased when the GO content was increased. This result implied that GO promoted the nonisothermal crystallization of PESu in the ternary PESu/PEG/GO composites. Discussions on nucleation activity and microscopy observations confirmed that GO can act as a nucleation agent to further enhance the crystallization of the composites. Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) with antiviral activity have attracted increasing attention for biomedical intervention. Functionalized SeNPs by β-thujaplicin (Se@TP) surface modified with superior antiviral activity were synthesized in this study. Compared to a virus group (43%), when treated with Se@TP (88%), the cell survival rate of MDCK cells was 45% higher. Se@TP could inhibit H1N1 from infecting Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells and block chromatin condensation and DNA fragmentation. Se@TP obviously prevented MDCK cells from generating reactive oxygen species. Furthermore, Se@TP prevents lung injury in H1N1-infected mice through eosin staining and hematoxylin in vivo.     Uterine transplant (UT) represents an opportunity to treat absolute uterine infertility. However, the use of uterine veins for venous return, in addition to ovarian veins, significantly increases the risk of ureteral wounds in the living donor and UT time for the recipient. Our aim was to demonstrate that dual ovarian venous return is sufficient for graft viability and survival.

    Uterine orthotopic auto-transplant was performed under general anaesthesia in six Yucatan minipig sows. The uterus graft was implanted with termino-lateral anastomoses between the ovarian and external iliac veins, and between the uterine and external iliac arteries, respectively.

APPROACH A multimodal DRS and imaging probe (0.78 mm outside diameter) was designed and validated to acquire diffuse spectra longitudinally-via endoscopic guidance-in developing colon tumors under 5-fluoruracil (5-FU) maximum-tolerated (MTD) and metronomic regimens. A filtering algorithm was developed to compensate for positional uncertainty in DRS measurements Results A maximum increase in StO2 was observed in both MTD and metronomic chemotherapy-treated murine primary CRC tumors at week 4 of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, with 21  ±  6  %   and 17  ±  6  %   fold changes, respectively. No significant changes were observed in tHb. Peroxiredoxin-6, an important intracellular anti-oxidant molecule, is reported to be highly expressed in the airways and lungs. The aim of this study was to analyze the expression pattern of peroxiredoxin-6 in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of asthmatic patients and in bronchial epithelial cells (****). METHODS The expression levels and modifications of peroxiredoxin-6 were evaluated in PBMCs from 22 asthmatic patients. Phosphorylated and acetylated peroxiredoxin-6 in hydrogen peroxide-treated human **** was detected using immunoprecipitation analysis. The expression level of peroxiredoxin-6 was also investigated in **** treated with hydrogen peroxide. Cycloheximide and proteasome inhibitors were used to determine whether peroxiredoxin-6 is degraded by proteasomes. RESULTS Peroxiredoxin-6 expression was significantly reduced in the PBMCs of asthmatic patients compared to control subjects. Distinct modification patterns for peroxiredoxin-6 were observed in the PBMCs of asthmatic patients using 2-dimensional-electrophoresis. The levels of phosphorylated serine and acetylated lysine in peroxiredoxin-6 were significantly increased in the **** following hydrogen peroxide treatment. The level of peroxiredoxin-6 expression was reduced in hydrogen peroxide-stimulated ****, presumably due to proteasomes. CONCLUSIONS The expression of peroxiredoxin-6, which is down-regulated in the immune cells of asthmatic patients and ****, can be modified by oxidative stress. Peroxiredoxin-6, an important intracellular anti-oxidant molecule, is reported to be highly expressed in the airways and lungs. The aim of this study was to analyze the expression pattern of peroxiredoxin-6 in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of asthmatic patients and in bronchial epithelial cells (BECs). METHODS The expression levels and modifications of peroxiredoxin-6 were evaluated in PBMCs from 22 asthmatic patients. Phosphorylated and acetylated peroxiredoxin-6 in hydrogen peroxide-treated human BECs was detected using immunoprecipitation analysis. The expression level of peroxiredoxin-6 was also investigated in BECs treated with hydrogen peroxide. Cycloheximide and proteasome inhibitors were used to determine whether peroxiredoxin-6 is degraded by proteasomes. RESULTS Peroxiredoxin-6 expression was significantly reduced in the PBMCs of asthmatic patients compared to control subjects. Distinct modification patterns for peroxiredoxin-6 were observed in the PBMCs of asthmatic patients using 2-dimensional-electrophoresis. The levels of phosphorylated serine and acetylated lysine in peroxiredoxin-6 were significantly increased in the BECs following hydrogen peroxide treatment. The level of peroxiredoxin-6 expression was reduced in hydrogen peroxide-stimulated BECs, presumably due to proteasomes. CONCLUSIONS The expression of peroxiredoxin-6, which is down-regulated in the immune cells of asthmatic patients and BECs, can be modified by oxidative stress. This phenomenon may have an effect on asthmatic airway inflammation.
