Furthermore, participant's subjective feelings from their self-reports indicate that foreign language learning also contributes to acquiring new English words and phrases. However, as there are very few empirical studies on this research topic, further research is needed in order to confirm or refute the present research findings on the enhancement of cognitive performance through non-native language learning in healthy seniors.The genetic diversity and relationship between wild (Vitis vinifera L. subsp. sylvestris (Gmel.) Hegi and cultivated (V. vinifera L. subsp. vinifera) grapevine in the western Balkan region and Central Europe have not been studied together previously, although this area has a rich viticultural past. Here, we studied wild grapevine populations sampled from their natural habitats in several countries of the western Balkan region and Central Europe. Their genetic diversity and structure were compared to cultivars that are traditionally in use in this region. A sample set of 243 accessions was genotyped at 20 nuclear microsatellite loci, including 167 sylvestris and 76 diverse vinifera cultivars. The genetic diversity of the wild grapevines was lower than that of cultivars by all genetic parameters. Both hierarchical and nonhierarchical clustering methods differentiated two main groups, indicating clear separation between wild and cultivated vines but also revealed clear gene flow between the cultivated and wild gene pools through overlaps and admixed ancestry values in the graphs. There was greater affinity to the wild grapes in Central European cultivars than in Balkan cultivars. Fine arrangement of the structure among cultivated grapevines showed differentiation among Central European and Balkan cultivars. These results confirm the divergence of wild grapes from vinifera and highlight the "crossroad" role of the western Balkan peninsula in the broader context of European viticulture.Organic heterostructures have emerged as highly promising transducers to realize high performance gas sensors. In the poultry house where biocidal paint was applied, the number of insects decreased continuously alongside the sampling dates. In both research stages, the biocidal paint proved more effective against A. diaperinus than traditional limewash, and also the time to effective interaction of the paint was noted. As with conventional robots, molecular robots consist of three essential robotics elements control of intelligent systems, sensors, and actuators, all integrated into a single micro compartment. Due to recent developments in microfluidic technologies, DNA nanotechnologies, synthetic biology, and molecular engineering, these individual parts have been developed, with the final picture beginning to come together. In this review, we describe recent developments of these sensors, actuators, and intelligence systems that can be applied to liposome-based molecular robots. First, we explain liposome generation for the compartments of molecular robots. Next, we discuss the emergence of robotics functions by using and functionalizing liposomal membranes. Then, we discuss actuators and intelligence via the encapsulation of chemicals into liposomes. Finally, the future vision and the challenges of molecular robots are described.

Moreover, the strengthened interfacial reaction also reduced the OH scavenging effect of water matrix, such as humic acid and carbonate. The interfacial adjustment method proposed in this study provided a novel insight into catalyst design and water treatment process. Understanding the interaction between heavy metals and soil organic matter (SOM) in mining area is important for the clarification of the environmental behaviors of heavy metals. In this work, the coherence of structural changes of SOM during interaction with Pb2+ and Cd2+ ions were examined by using UV-vis/fluorescence spectroscopy coupled with correlation analyses. The result showed that phenolic- and carboxylic-like groups of SOM were engaged in the complexation of heavy metals (Pb2+ and Cd2+) with SOM, resulting in the formation of highly conjugated macromolecules/aggregates and an increase in molecular weight/size. Fluorescent humic-like, fulvic-like, and protein-like species were involved in the binding with Pb2+/Cd2+ ions, which were closely correlated with phenolic-like and carboxylic-like constitutes. SOM was more favorable to bind with Pb2+ ions than Cd2+ ions, with a less susceptive of SOM structure to Pb2+/Cd2+ ions in the mining area compared to those off the mining area under heavy metal stress. These results may provide a new insight for the treatment and remediation of heavy metal-polluted soil in mining area. As the environment deterioration is becoming more serious, bacterial pollution is threatening the health of human beings. Hence, it is vital to develop rapid and safe sterilization strategy. Herein, CuS/protonated g-C3N4(CuS/PCN) composites were synthesized by simple hydrothermal method and electrostatic adsorption. This heterostructured system exhibited enhanced photocatalytic properties under visible light compared with CuS or g-C3N4 alone, ascribing to the rapid separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Meanwhile, the obvious photothermal effects of CuS/PCN were achieved and the temperature increased with the increased amount of CuS in the composites due to the more light absorption. However, when the CuS content is more than 10 %, photocurrent density is decreased with increasing the amount of CuS, indicating the increased recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. When the CuS content is 20 %, the composite can perform the optimized synergistic effects of both photothermal action and photocatalysis under light irradiation for 20 min. The corresponding bacteria-killing efficiency against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli is 98.23 % and 99.16 %, respectively. The underlying mechanism is that the bacterial membrane can be weakened by reactive oxygen species and bacterial activities are inhibited by hyperthermia. This CuS/PCN heterojunction is promising for environmental disinfection including water and public facilities sterilization. Environmental pollution by anthropogenic chemicals has become a considerable problem. Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), a subclass of persistent organic pollutants, are used as insecticides and industrial chemicals. They are lipophilic and minimally degradable, and they easily accumulate in the environment and human body. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated that exposure to OCPs strongly correlates with the development of type 2 diabetes, which involves mitochondrial dysfunction. To clarify their effects, OCP mixtures (β-hexachlorocyclohexane, heptachlor, hexachlorobenzene, 4,4'-DDT, and chlordane) were used to treat mitochondria from zebrafish livers. Results showed that as OCP concentrations increased, Ca2+ intake into the mitochondria rose, which increased the activity of mitochondrial complexes I, II, IV, and citrate synthase. Complex III yielded the opposite result because the OCP mixture mimicked decylubiquinol, a natural substrate of complex III. An innovative carbonate (CO32-)-mediated method to synchronously enhance the catalytic activity and stability of TMCs was developed herein. In a model PMS/Co3O4 nanowire system for bisphenol A (BPA) degradation, the first-order kinetic constant and total organic carbon removal ratio were increased by 202.27% and 71.32% upon adding CO32-, respectively. Meanwhile, the cobalt release amount was significantly reduced from 4.90 to 0.03 mg/L, and the number of reuse with high efficiency (>90% of BPA removal within 10 min) was augmented from 1 to 3 times. The CO32- buffered pH decline to repress metal leakage, and promoted Co(III) reduction into Co(II) to avoid the over-oxidation of catalyst. Under the driving of CO32-, the dominated reactive species were switched from •OH/SO4•- to 1O2 accompanying the migration of catalytic center from Co(II) to Co(III). The Co(III) and CO32-/OH- acted as electron and proton acceptors, respectively, to accelerate PMS decomposition into SO5•- and subsequent generation of vast 1O2. This work proposes a green way to construct novel 1O2-based catalytic systems with excellent activity and stability for pollution remediation. To date, comparatively little research is known about the role of pH conditions in bioremediation of Cr(VI) contaminated aquifers. This study explored microbial Cr(VI) reduction and denitrification under different initial pHs. The underlying mechanism was also investigated. When testing 50 mg/L-N nitrate and 10 mg/L Cr(VI), complete contaminants removal was observed at initial pH 10.0 and 11.0, and only 10 %-30 % of removal achieved under other conditions, which might be ascribe to the significant up-regulation of functional genes narG (8.31 and 10.46 folds) and azoR (24.90 and 15.96 folds) at initial pH 10.0 and 11.0. Metagenomic sequencing showed that alkali tolerant bacteria played major roles in the NO3--Cr(VI) reduction (i.e. Pannonibacter increased by 13.08 % and 25.24 % at initial pH 10.0 and 11.0), and metabolic pathways of Degradation and Energy were found of increased abundant. Furthermore, a significative study suggested that potential interspecies cooperation existed at initial pH 11.0 to facilitating the simultaneous removal of contaminants, and Pannonibacter indicus might be an important participant in the degradation of contaminants.

In the UK, juvenile idiopathic arthritis is the most common inflammatory disorder in childhood, affecting 10 100,000 children and young people aged < 16 years each year, with a population prevalence of around 1 1000. Corticosteroids are commonly used to treat juvenile idiopathic arthritis; however, there is currently a lack of consensus as to which corticosteroid induction regimen should be used with various disease subtypes and severities of juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

Successful recruitment and follow-up of PWID in cohort studies may require formative assessment of barriers PWID are faced with in participation and retention in cohort studies and factors they think may facilitate their engagement in such studies. Severe fever and thrombocytopenia bunyavirus (SFTSV) infection causes severe fever and thrombocytopenia syndrome with high mortality. It is extremely rare that a transmitting tick can be directly captured in bite wounds, and that SFTSV can be isolated from both the captured tick and patient's serum to establish a solid pathogen diagnosis.
We report a case infected with severe fever and thrombocytopenia bunyavirus. The 69-year-old male patient presented with fever and tenderness on two lymph nodes in the right groin. A visible tick bite mark appeared on right upper quadrant of the patient's abdomen, and a live tick was captured in the bite wound upon physical examination. The virus was detected in both the blood of the patient and in the tick that stayed in the bite wound for 7 days. The phylogenetic analysis indicated that the SFTSV isolated from the tick and the patient's serum sample belonged to type B, in which the L/S segment of these two isolates shared 100% homology, while the M segment had 99.9% homology.

The ability to construct core-shell microcapsules has the potential to shift the paradigm in the development of new delivery systems for nutrients, cosmetics, and drugs. In this work, we demonstrate an application of focused surface acoustic wave (FSAW) microfluidics to produce microcapsules with a core-shell structure using one or two focused interdigital transducers (FIDTs) on the microfluidic device. Solid particles or liquid microdroplets without any special modification in multiphase laminar flow are driven by the acoustic radiation force arising from the FSAW, and cross the oil/water interface **** and forth, which is not only suitable for generation of core-shell microcapsules with solid cores but also used for coating an aqueous microdroplet core with an oil shell. On this basis, more FIDTs can be added to the device to manufacture more layers of microcapsules if needed. Single-layer, two-layer, or even multi-layer microcapsules can be selectively fabricated. These functional groups captured Fe3+ from the CD/Fe3+ system to reduce the electron transfer. With such a design, the rapid detection of glyphosate could be realized by this turn-on fluorescent sensor based on the CD/Fe3+ system. The nasal septum as well as regulating air flow provides structural support to the nasal tip. The attachment of the nasal septum to the anterior nasal spine must be structurally resilient to prevent saddling or tip ptosis. This can be achieved by direct attachment with absorbable suture material to the periosteum of the anterior nasal spine or a drill fitted with 0.6 mm diamond tip **** (Ultrabur, Invotec International), to create channel through which the nasal spine can be secured to the anterior nasal spine. This study describes the flap-bag technique, a novel technique using both a dorsal rectangular flap and a plantar triangular flap that was designed to yield more favorable outcomes in the treatment of this condition, and the outcomes obtained for three patients surgically treated with this technique. Methods After the proper width of the forefoot was measured by manually holding the toes to maintain a transverse arch around the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint, a plantar triangular flap was designed. A dorsally based rectangular flap was subsequently designed on the dorsal side of the interdigital portion, including the deepest side of the cleft, to create a natural dorsal slope. Results Application of this technique yielded favorable outcomes by maintaining the width and transverse arch of the forefoot, preventing dorsal scarring, and creating a natural interdigital space and dorsal slope. Positron Emission Tomography in combination with Computed Tomography (PET-CT) imaging is an essential diagnostic tool for both staging and surveillance of melanoma patients; especially in metastatic disease, where prognosis is poor. We report a case of a patient with known Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) who presented to the Skin Cancer Multidisciplinary meeting with 11 mm Breslow thickness malignant melanoma of the left forearm. His extensive dermal neurofibromatoses proved a diagnostic challenge to the team. There have been published studies linking NF-1 with malignant melanoma. However the incidence and significance of this has yet to be established. We also discuss the use of PET-CT imaging and skin surveillance in the monitoring and staging of this patient. Here, we report the case of 24-year-old male who presented with severe bilateral true eyelid ptosis. Physical examination revealed severe ptosis with poor function of the levator palpabrae superioris muscle, thickening of and deep grooves in facial skin (especially at the frontal region), and abnormal appearance of the scalp with accentuating folds and deep furrows (cutis verticis gyrata). Abnormal bone enlargement of the hands, knees, and feet was also observed. Frontal rhytidectomy and levator resection and advancement were performed to alleviate symptoms. At the short-term follow-up, the patient described being satisfied with the outcome of treatment. This patient will be routinely followed over the long term to evaluate disease progression.

This study describes the flap-bag technique, a novel technique using both a dorsal rectangular flap and a plantar triangular flap that was designed to yield more favorable outcomes in the treatment of this condition, and the outcomes obtained for three patients surgically treated with this technique. Methods After the proper width of the forefoot was measured by manually holding the toes to maintain a transverse arch around the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint, a plantar triangular flap was designed. A dorsally based rectangular flap was subsequently designed on the dorsal side of the interdigital portion, including the deepest side of the cleft, to create a natural dorsal slope. Results Application of this technique yielded favorable outcomes by maintaining the width and transverse arch of the forefoot, preventing dorsal scarring, and creating a natural interdigital space and dorsal slope. Positron Emission Tomography in combination with Computed Tomography (PET-CT) imaging is an essential diagnostic tool for both staging and surveillance of melanoma patients; especially in metastatic disease, where prognosis is poor. We report a case of a patient with known Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) who presented to the Skin Cancer Multidisciplinary meeting with 11 mm Breslow thickness malignant melanoma of the left forearm. His extensive dermal neurofibromatoses proved a diagnostic challenge to the team. There have been published studies linking NF-1 with malignant melanoma. However the incidence and significance of this has yet to be established. We also discuss the use of PET-CT imaging and skin surveillance in the monitoring and staging of this patient. Here, we report the case of 24-year-old male who presented with severe bilateral true eyelid ptosis. Physical examination revealed severe ptosis with poor function of the levator palpabrae superioris muscle, thickening of and deep grooves in facial skin (especially at the frontal region), and abnormal appearance of the scalp with accentuating folds and deep furrows (cutis verticis gyrata). Abnormal bone enlargement of the hands, knees, and feet was also observed. Frontal rhytidectomy and levator resection and advancement were performed to alleviate symptoms. At the short-term follow-up, the patient described being satisfied with the outcome of treatment. OBJECTIVE To predict which finger a participant with hand paralysis was attempting to move using intracortical data recorded from the motor cortex. METHODS A 31-yr-old man with a C5/6 ASIA B spinal cord injury was implanted with 2 88-channel microelectrode arrays in left motor cortex. Across 3 d, the participant observed a virtual hand flex in each finger while neural firing rates were recorded. A 6-class linear discriminant analysis (LDA) classifier, with 10 × 10-fold cross-validation, was used to predict which finger movement was being performed (flexion/extension of all 5 digits and adduction/abduction of the thumb). RESULTS The mean overall classification accuracy was 67% (range 65%-76%, chance 17%), which occurred at an average of 560 ms (range 420-780 ms) after movement onset. Individually, thumb flexion and thumb adduction were classified with the highest accuracies at 92% and 93%, respectively. The index, middle, ring, and little achieved an accuracy of 65%, 59%, 43%, and 56%, respectively, and, when incorrectly classified, were typically marked as an adjacent finger. The classification accuracies were reflected in a low-dimensional projection of the neural data into LDA space, where the thumb-related movements were most separable from the finger movements. CONCLUSION Classification of intention to move individual fingers was accurately predicted by intracortical recordings from a human participant with the thumb being particularly independent. This study summarizes the recent literature identifying factors that influence rural doctor retention and analyses strategies implemented to increase retention. Uniquely, this study addresses the importance of context in the planning, implementation and success of these strategies, drawing on literature from high-, middle- and low-income countries. METHODS A systematic review of the English literature was conducted in two parts. The first identified factors contributing to rural doctor retention, yielding 28 studies (2015-2019). The second identified 19 studies up to 2019 that assessed the outcomes of implemented rural retention strategies. RESULTS Universal retention factors for health professionals in a rural environment include rural background, positive rural exposure in training or in the early postgraduate years and personal and professional support. It is our concern that, without a renewed effort to critically interpret and appraise these studies as high or low quality, we run the risk of the quality and value of evidence-based medicine in neurosurgery being misinterpreted. Correspondingly, we have outlined 4 major domains to target in interpreting neurosurgical systematic reviews and meta-analyses based on the lessons learned by a collaboration of clinicians and academics summarized as 4 pearls. The domains of (1) heterogeneity, (2) modeling, (3) certainty, and (4) bias in neurosurgical systematic reviews and meta-analyses were identified as aspects in which the authors' approaches have changed over time to improve robustness and transparency. Examples of how and why these pearls were adapted were provided in areas of cranial neuralgia, spine, pediatric, and neuro-oncology to demonstrate how neurosurgical readers and writers may improve their interpretation of these domains. The incorporation of these pearls into practice will empower neurosurgical academics to effectively interpret systematic reviews and meta-analyses, enhancing the quality of our evidence-based medicine literature while maintaining a critical focus on the needs of the individual patients in neurosurgery. Single-cell RNA sequencing allows highly detailed profiling of cellular immune responses from limited-volume samples, advancing prospects of a new era of systems immunology. The power of single-cell RNA sequencing offers various opportunities to decipher the immune response to infectious diseases and vaccines. Here, we describe the potential uses of single-cell RNA sequencing methods in prophylactic vaccine development, concentrating on infectious diseases including COVID-19. Using examples from several diseases, we review how single-cell RNA sequencing has been used to evaluate the immunological response to different vaccine platforms and regimens. By highlighting published and unpublished single-cell RNA sequencing studies relevant to vaccinology, we discuss some general considerations how the field could be enriched with the widespread adoption of this technology.Celastrus orbiculatus Thunb has been known as an ethnopharmacological medicinal plant for antitumor, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects. Although various pharmacological studies of C. orbiculatus extract has been reported, an anti-inflammatory mechanism study of their phytochemical constituents has not been fully elucidated. In this study, compounds 1-17, including undescribed podocarpane-type trinorditerpenoid (3), were purified from C. orbiculatus and their chemical structure were determined by high-resolution electrospray ionization mass (HRESIMS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic data. To investigate the anti-inflammatory activity of compounds 1-17, nitric oxide (NO) secretion was evaluated in LPS-treated murine macrophages, RAW264.7 cells. Among compounds 1-17, deoxynimbidiol (1) and new trinorditerpenoid (3) showed the most potent inhibitory effects (IC50 4.9 and 12.6 μM, respectively) on lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) stimulated NO releases as well as proinflammatory mediators, such as inducible nitric oxide (iNOS), cyclooxygenase- (COX-) 2, interleukin- (IL-) 1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor- (TNF-) α. Its inhibitory activity of proinflammatory mediators is contributed by suppressing the activation of nuclear transcription factor- (NF-) κB and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling cascades including p65, inhibition of NF-κB (IκB), extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK), and p38. Therefore, these results demonstrated that diterpenoids 1 and 3 obtained from C. orbiculatus may be considered a potential candidate for the treatment of inflammatory diseases.Despite the shared pattern of surface antigens, neoplastic cells in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) are highly heterogeneous in CD5 expression, a marker linked to a proliferative pool of neoplastic cells. To further characterize CD5high and CD5low neoplastic cells, we assessed the chemokine receptors (CCR5, CCR7, CCR10, CXCR3, CXCR4, CXCR5) and adhesion molecules (CD54, CD62L, CD49d) on the CD5high and CD5low subpopulations, defined by CD5/CD19 coexpression, in peripheral blood of CLL patients (n = 60) subgrouped according to the IgHV mutational status (IgHVmut, n = 24; IgHVunmut, n = 36). CD5high subpopulation showed a high percentage of CXCR3 (P less then 0.001), CCR10 (P = 0.001), and CD62L (P = 0.031) and high levels of CXCR5 (P = 0.005), CCR7 (P = 0.013) compared to CD5low cells expressing high CXCR4 (P less then 0.001). Comparing IgHVmut and IgHVunmut patients, high levels of CXCR3 on CD5high and CD5low subpopulations were detected in the IgHVmut patients, with better discrimination in CD5low subpopulation. Levels of CXCR3 on CD5low subpopulation were associated with time to the next treatment, thus further confirming its prognostic value. Taken together, our analysis revealed higher CXCR3 expression on both CD5high and CD5low neoplastic cells in IgHVmut with a better prognosis compared to IgHVunmut patients. Gut microbiota dysbiosis not only modulates the immune responses of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract but also impacts the immunity of distal organs, such as the lung, further affecting lung health and respiratory diseases. Here, we review the recent evidence of the correlations and underlying mechanisms of the relationship between the gut microbiota and common respiratory diseases, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis (CF), lung cancer, and respiratory infection, and probiotic development as a therapeutic intervention for these diseases.Chemokine receptor CXCR5-mediated control of B cell trafficking in the lymphoid tissues plays a central role in orchestrating the B cell function, which not only guides the colocalization of B cells with follicular helper T cells in the follicular mantle zone but also determines the position of germinal center dark and light zones. However, the mechanisms that regulate the expression of CXCR5 in B cells remain unclear. At a university hospital in Korea, we conducted a retrospective study to determine the association of the progression of diabetic retinopathy (DR) with declining renal function in type 2 diabetes.
We included a total of 1527 patients with type 2 diabetes who followed up in our diabetes clinic and underwent fundus photographic examinations from August 2006 to February 2014. DR was assessed by retinal ophthalmologists using comprehensive ophthalmologic examinations.
The baseline prevalence of nonproliferative DR (NPDR) and proliferative DR (PDR) was 26.5% and 14.7%, respectively. Among 1303 patients with no DR and NPDR, 134 (10.3%) patients progressed to NPDR or PDR. The progression group had longer duration of diabetes, higher fasting plasma glucose, higher HbA1c, and a higher rate of ≥20% decline in eGFR during the follow-up period. After multivariate analysis, ≥20% decline in eGFR (odds ratio 2.553, 95% CI 1.219-5.348,
= 0.013) was an independent risk factor for progression of DR in patients with NPDR.

To further characterize CD5high and CD5low neoplastic cells, we assessed the chemokine receptors (CCR5, CCR7, CCR10, CXCR3, CXCR4, CXCR5) and adhesion molecules (CD54, CD62L, CD49d) on the CD5high and CD5low subpopulations, defined by CD5/CD19 coexpression, in peripheral blood of CLL patients (n = 60) subgrouped according to the IgHV mutational status (IgHVmut, n = 24; IgHVunmut, n = 36). CD5high subpopulation showed a high percentage of CXCR3 (P less then 0.001), CCR10 (P = 0.001), and CD62L (P = 0.031) and high levels of CXCR5 (P = 0.005), CCR7 (P = 0.013) compared to CD5low cells expressing high CXCR4 (P less then 0.001). Comparing IgHVmut and IgHVunmut patients, high levels of CXCR3 on CD5high and CD5low subpopulations were detected in the IgHVmut patients, with better discrimination in CD5low subpopulation. Levels of CXCR3 on CD5low subpopulation were associated with time to the next treatment, thus further confirming its prognostic value. Taken together, our analysis revealed higher CXCR3 expression on both CD5high and CD5low neoplastic cells in IgHVmut with a better prognosis compared to IgHVunmut patients. At a university hospital in Korea, we conducted a retrospective study to determine the association of the progression of diabetic retinopathy (DR) with declining renal function in type 2 diabetes. We included a total of 1527 patients with type 2 diabetes who followed up in our diabetes clinic and underwent fundus photographic examinations from August 2006 to February 2014. DR was assessed by retinal ophthalmologists using comprehensive ophthalmologic examinations. The baseline prevalence of nonproliferative DR (NPDR) and proliferative DR (PDR) was 26.5% and 14.7%, respectively. Among 1303 patients with no DR and NPDR, 134 (10.3%) patients progressed to NPDR or PDR. The progression group had longer duration of diabetes, higher fasting plasma glucose, higher HbA1c, and a higher rate of ≥20% decline in eGFR during the follow-up period. Tibial nerve injury is a sustainable but rare complication during total-ankle arthroplasty (TAA). We outlined 2 previously unreported cases of tibial nerve injury in TAA, including the prognoses and possible causes.
First, a 63-year-old woman complained of a 5-month history of persistent tingling sensation and numbness on the medial and plantar aspects of her foot after TAA. Second, a 50-year-old woman complained of a 6-month history of tingling sensation and numbness on the plantar surface of her forefoot after TAA.
Explorations were performed on suspicion of tarsal tunnel syndrome; however, both patients exhibited complete laceration of tibial nerve with neuroma formation.
In both patients, we excised the neuroma and performed end-to-end nerve repair.
The sensory disturbance of the sole considerably improved at long-term follow-up over 8 years after the neurorrhaphy procedures.

Although rare, pancreatic neoplasms can occur during pregnancy, both in benign and malignant forms. Mucinous cystic neoplasms (MCNs) of the pancreas, a type of these neoplasms, are precursor lesions to invasive pancreatic cancer. The presence of the ovarian-type stroma is a defining feature.
The first case was a 38-year-old woman in her 18th week of pregnancy with abdominal pain that worsens a few weeks later. The second case was a 30-year-old woman in her 17th week of pregnancy with abdominal pain in the left hypochondrium.
The patients were under clinical examination and laboratory test including carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). Both patients had magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The diagnosis of a MCNs of the pancreas was done preoperatively in the 2 cases.
Both patients underwent distal pancreatectomy during pregnancy. One of them was an emergency laparotomy because of a ruptured MCN.
Both patients were completely recovered from distal pancreatectomy and continued to full term, delivering a healthy baby by Caesarean section. After 6 years of follow-up, the first patient underwent a total gastrectomy, because of a gastric cancer with carcinomatosis. Currently the 2 patients are still alive after 8 years and 5 years of follow-up, respectively.

Forty-seven eyes of 47 SLE patients and 44 eyes of healthy controls were included in this cross-sectional study. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) was used to measure the corneal and scleral thickness. Scleral thickness (ST) was measured based upon the segmentation at 1000 to 5000 μm from the scleral spur. Pentacam HR was used to measure corneal parameters.
There was no statistically significant difference between SLE group and control group according to age and sex (P > .05). The ST measurements at all distances from scleral spur were found to be thicker in patients with SLE (P < .05). Central corneal thickness (CCT), cornea volume (CV), corneal densitometry (CD), and peripheral corneal thickness (PCT) measurements were similar between the groups (P > .05).

Relative hydration status (ΔHS, %) was defined in terms of the hydration status-to-extracellular water ratio with a cutoff of 15%, and hyperhydrated status was defined as ΔHS > 15%.Although there were no significant differences in total body water, extracellular water, or intracellular water among groups, mean amount of volume overload and hyperhydrated status were significantly higher in HD and PD patients compared with control and pre-dialysis patients.

This study investigated the presence, abundance, and activity of these groups of microbes at a beach near Springmaid Pier in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, through the implementation of next generation sequencing, quantitative PCR (qPCR), and microcosm experiments to monitor activity. Sequencing analysis revealed a diverse community of ammonia-oxidizing microbes dominated by AOA classified within the family Nitrosopumilaceae, and qPCR revealed the abundance of AOA amoA genes over AOB by at least an order of magnitude in most samples. Microcosm studies indicate that the rates of potential ammonia oxidation in these communities satisfy Michaelis-Menten substrate kinetics and this process is more active at temperatures corresponding to summer months than winter. Herein, we will first review the pathological accumulation and characterization of ECM proteins recognized as important molecular features of diseases. To characterize the accuracy and consistency of fluoroscope dose index reporting and report rates of occupational radiation safety hardware availability and use, trainee participation in procedures, and optional hardware availability at pilot sites for the American College of Radiology (ACR) Fluoroscopy Dose Index Registry (DIR).
Nine institutions participated in the registry pilot, providing fluoroscopic technical and clinical practice data from 38 angiographic C-arm-type fluoroscopes. These data included measurements of the procedure table and mattress transmission factors and accuracy measurements of the reference-point air kerma (K
) and air kerma-area product (P
). The accuracy of the radiation dose indices were analyzed for variation over time by 1-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Sites also self-reported information on availability and use of radiation safety hardware, hardware configuration of fluoroscopes, and trainee participation in procedures.

The mean absolute difference between correction factors for a given system in fluoroscopic and acquisition mode was 0.03 (95% confidence interval, 0.03-0.03). Maximum phonation time (MPT) is a test to measure glottic efficiency for laryngeal pathology screening and treatment monitoring. The normative value of MPT for South East Asia population has yet to be reported. It is postulated that MPT may be affected by body mass index (BMI) despite the paucity of evidence. Therefore, this study was designed to establish the normative value of MPT for a South East Asia population and investigate its relation to BMI.
This cross-sectional study was conducted in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Center between May and September 2017.

There is an increased need for vocal education programs in group fitness instructors due to the reported risk of phonotraumatic injury in this population. Most research has focused on aerobics class instructors with limited research detailing the vocal demand response of cycling instruction, specifically. We hypothesized that instruction of a single indoor cycling class would produce evidence of acute vocal fold edema manifested by worsening of acoustic and self-perceptual voice measures and changes in ratings of laryngeal appearance.
Prospective Cohort study.
Acoustic and self-perceptual voice measures that were potentially sensitive to laryngeal edema were collected from ten cycling instructors (Mean age 31 ± 6.14 years, 3M and 7F) before and after instruction of a typical 45-minute cycling class. Two laryngologists then rated pairs of laryngeal exams from five instructors (Mean age 30 ± 6.22 years, 1M and 4F) on the measure of vocal fold edema using a 10-inch Visual Analogue Scale. Paired t-test comparisons were completed on normalized data to compare pre- and postinstruction.
Majority of acoustic and self-perceptual measures significantly worsened following cycling instruction but the magnitude of change in these measures were small. In terms of laryngeal appearance, no measurable change in vocal fold edema was observed at both time points.
The vocal demand response to a single cycling class may be insufficient to cause significant vocal fold edema in our cycling instructors. Future research is required to determine the effects of repeated cycling instruction.

While the potential is evident, the information of the features of the Nyquist plot, which the evaluation is based on, is still incomplete. The current identified features and their vibratory behaviors may be inadequate to guarantee accurate interpretation of the findings. The present study aims to address this issue by examining the features of the Nyquist plot and their vibratory behaviors. A total of 56 young normophonic speakers, that is, 20 males and 36 females were recruited as the participants. Each of them underwent laryngeal high-speed videoendoscopy to record the images of the vocal fold vibration, which were then analyzed to generate the Nyquist plots. The features were identified by inspecting the properties of the plot points forming the Nyquist plots. For each identified feature, its vibratory behaviors were examined. The results revealed four features rim contour depicting the longitudinal phase difference; left edge shape signifying the glottal configuration, phase closure, and closed phase duration; rim width and rim pattern visualizing the regularity of glottal areas and the regularity of the intracycle variations, respectively. The findings present a more complete reference of the features and their vibratory behaviors that is pertinent for the Nyquist plot interpretation.
