The paediatric and adult model results were compared. RESULTS Increase of the vessels stiffness due to aging contributes to a flow rate decrease while blood pressure increases. In accordance, our simulation results show about 16% decrease in mean pressure of internal jugular vein in paediatric rather than adult subjects. RESULTS The study population consisted of 64,428 women and men with no prior fracture (mar relationships with low BMD and future fracture risk. This supports the inclusion of high-trauma fractures in clinical assessment for underlying osteoporosis and in the evaluation for intervention to reduce future fracture risk.Because compounds accumulate through dry periods and enter aquatic systems in just a few seasonal events such as snowmelt and summer storms, surface waters in semi-arid, cold regions, such as the Canadian Prairies, are particularly vulnerable to loading of contaminant from runoff events from surfaces. This study assessed concentrations of metals and selected trace organics entering a river via surface runoff from an urban region and how these semi-arid regions with large seasonal variations in temperature might differ from more temperate regions. Selected potentially harmful elements (PHEs) including, Mn with Cr, Cu, Zn, Ba and U all exceeded guideline discharge values set by the Canadian Council of the Ministers of the Environment (CCME) by as **** as 16-fold. Variation among discharges during spring, summer and winter was observed. For example, across the whole city, an estimated 6 kg of zinc was discharged in a spring storm, 36 kg in a summer storm and 17 tonnes in snowmelt. The mass of Zn discharged is similar to the annual loading estimated for Stockholm, Sweden, but in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, the bulk of runoff was during snowmelt. The mean sum of poly- and per-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in stormwater was 9.0 ng L-1, which is consistent with concentrations observed in other Canadian cities (6.5-16 ng L-1). These concentrations of PFAS are likely due to dispersed sources and orders of magnitude less than thresholds for toxicity to fish and aquatic invertebrates.Pellet stoves arouse a real interest from consumers because they are perceived as a renewable and carbon neutral energy. However, wood combustion can contribute significantly to air pollution, in particular through the emission of particulate matter (PM). In this article, five brands of wood pellets were burnt under optimal combustion conditions and trace element and inorganic salt emission factors (EFs) in PM were determined. Results show that a significant proportion of metals such as lead, zinc, cadmium, and copper initially present in pellets were emitted into the air during combustion with 20 ± 6%, 31 ± 12%, and 19 ± 6% of the initial content respectively for Zn, Pb, and Cd. The median emission factors for Pb, Cu, Cd, As, Zn, and Ni were respectively 188, 86, 9.3, 8.7, 2177, and 3.5 μg kg-1. As the transmission of heavy metals through the food chain and their accumulation pose a serious risk to human health and safety, there has been increasing attention in the investigation of heavy metal pollution and search for effective soil remediation technologies. Here, we summarized and discussed the basic principles, strengths and weaknesses, and limitations of common standalone approaches such as those based on physics, chemistry, and biology, emphasizing their incompatibility with large-scale applications. Moreover, we explained the effects, advantages, and disadvantages of the combinations of common single repair approaches. We highlighted the latest research advances and prospects in phytoremediation-chemical, phytoremediation-microbe, and phytoremediation-genetic engineering combined with remediation approaches by changing metal availability, improving plant tolerance, promoting plant growth, improving phytoextraction and phytostabilization, etc.

Seven horses were treated with intravenous detomidine in low/high doses alone (DL 2.5 μg/kg + 6.25 μg/kg/h; DH 5 μg/kg +12.5 μg/kg/h) or associated with methadone (DLM and DHM, 0.2 mg/kg + 0.05 mg/kg/h) and with low (ACPL 0.02 mg/kg) or high (ACPH 0.09 mg/kg) doses of acepromazine alone. Horses were filmed at (i) baseline (ii) peak, (iii) intermediate, and (iv) end of sedation immediately before auditory, visual and pressure stimuli were applied and postural instability evaluated for another study. Videos were randomized and blindly evaluated by four evaluators in two phases with 1-month interval. Intra- and interobserver reliability of the sum of EquiSed (Intraclass correlation coefficient) ranged between 0.84-0.94 and 0.45-0.88, respectively. The criterion validity was endorsed by the high Spearman correlation between the EquiSed and visual analog (0.77), numerical rating (0.76), and simple descriptive scales (0.70), and average correlation with head height above the ground (HHAG) (-0.52). The Friedman test confirmed the EquiSed responsiveness over time. We also observed a statistically significant correlation between histological grade and c-KIT mRNA expression. No correlations were found between KIT protein immunohistochemical distribution pattern and c-KIT mRNA expression or histological grade. Approximately 44% of the on-feed beef cattle in the U.S. are concentrated in feedlots less then 32,000 heads, but little information is available on dynamics of FMD in large feedlots. Therefore, there is a need to explore possible management and intervention strategies that might be implemented during potential FMD outbreaks on feedlots. We used a within home-pen stochastic susceptible-latent-infectious-recovered (SLIR) FMD dynamics model nested in a meta-population model of home-pens in a feedlot. The combinatory model was previously developed to simulate foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDv) transmission within U.S. beef feedlots. We evaluated three intervention strategies initiated on the day of FMD detection stopping movements of cattleedlots, but rarely prevented infection of the entire feedlot. Number of hospital-pens in the feedlot was shown to weakly impact the success of NH-TD. Overall, the results suggest that stopping cattle movements between the home-pens and hospital-pens, without or with barrier or targeted cattle depopulation, would not be highly effective to interrupt FMDv transmission within a feedlot.3D bioprinting is a rapidly evolving industry that has been utilized for a variety of biomedical applications. It differs from traditional 3D printing in that it utilizes bioinks comprised of cells and other biomaterials to allow for the generation of complex functional tissues. Bioprinting involves computational modeling, bioink preparation, bioink deposition, and subsequent maturation of printed products; it is an intricate process where bioink composition, bioprinting approach, and bioprinter type must be considered during construct development. This technology has already found success in human studies, where a variety of functional tissues have been generated for both in vitro and in vivo applications. Although the main driving force behind innovation in 3D bioprinting has been utility in human medicine, recent efforts investigating its veterinary application have begun to emerge. To date, 3D bioprinting has been utilized to create bone, cardiovascular, cartilage, corneal and neural constructs in animal species.

The association between chronic hepatitis C (CHC) infection and extrahepatic manifestations (EHMs), particularly cardiometabolic diseases, has been extensively examined. However, there has still been insufficient evaluation for these EHMs after virological cure. Several multidirectional mechanisms have been proposed explaining the ability of hepatitis C virus (HCV) developing EHMs, cardiometabolic ones, as well as the effect of antiviral therapy to resolve these EHMs. Data on these manifestations after achieving sustained virologic response (SVR) are still conflicting. However, current evidence suggests that reversal of hepatic steatosis and its coexistent hypocholesterolemia after successful viral eradication led to unfavorable lipid profile, which increases cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Additionally, most observations showed that metabolic alterations, such as insulin resistance and diabetes mellitus (DM), undergo some degree of reduction after viral clearance. These changes seem HCV-genotype dependent. Interferon-based antiviral therapy and direct acting antiviral drugs were shown to minimize incidence of DM. Large epidemiological studies that investigated the effect of SVR on CVD showed great discrepancies in terms of results, with predominant findings indicating that CVD events decreased in patients with SVR compared to non-responders or untreated ones. In this review, we present a summary of the current knowledge regarding extrahepatic sequelae of CHC following SVR, which may have an impact on healthcare providers' clinical practice.Pancreatic cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related death with few available therapies for advanced disease. Recently, patients with germline **** mutations have received increased attention due to advances in the management of **** mutated ovarian and breast tumors. Germline **** mutations significantly increase risk of developing pancreatic cancer and can be found in up to 8% of patients with sporadic pancreatic cancer. In patients with germline **** mutations, platinum-based chemotherapies and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors are effective treatment options which may offer survival benefits. This review will focus on the molecular biology, epidemiology, and management of ****-mutated pancreatic cancer. Furthermore, we will discuss future directions for this area of research and promising active areas of research.Progress in the fight against pancreatic cancer has been hampered by many factors. One of them is the inability to detect the disease early in overwhelming majority of patients. The present paper outlines a novel way in which progress could be accelerated. The association between chronic hepatitis C (CHC) infection and extrahepatic manifestations (EHMs), particularly cardiometabolic diseases, has been extensively examined. However, there has still been insufficient evaluation for these EHMs after virological cure. Several multidirectional mechanisms have been proposed explaining the ability of hepatitis C virus (HCV) developing EHMs, cardiometabolic ones, as well as the effect of antiviral therapy to resolve these EHMs. Data on these manifestations after achieving sustained virologic response (SVR) are still conflicting. However, current evidence suggests that reversal of hepatic steatosis and its coexistent hypocholesterolemia after successful viral eradication led to unfavorable lipid profile, which increases cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Additionally, most observations showed that metabolic alterations, such as insulin resistance and diabetes mellitus (DM), undergo some degree of reduction after viral clearance. In patients with germline BRCA mutations, platinum-based chemotherapies and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors are effective treatment options which may offer survival benefits. The remission rate in children with Graves' disease (GD) after 2-6 years of antithyroid drug (ATD) treatment is 40-50%. It has been reported that it is difficult to predict the GD prognosis based on the TSH receptor antibody (TRAb) level at the cessation of ATD treatment. We studied whether the persistence of negative TRAb at ATD treatment cessation increased the remission rate in pediatric patients with GD.
We included 22 patients diagnosed with GD who discontinued ATD treatment after confirmation of negative TRAb on two or more consecutive tests. Remission was defined as the maintenance of normal thyroid function, including serum TSH level, with negative TRAb more than 2 years after ATD discontinuation.
Of the 22 patients, 12 achieved remission (remission rate 54.5%), with no significant between-group difference in the median duration of ATD treatment in the remission and relapse groups (4.4 vs 3.9 years). Of the 10 patients who relapsed, 4 (40.0%) relapsed within 2 years after ATD discontinuation, and 4 (40.0%) relapsed more than 5 years after ATD discontinuation.

To investigate the occurrence of natural vs. anthropogenically influenced anoxia, we constructed a logistic regression model to calculate the probability of low-nutrient lakes (TP less then 15 µg/L) developing aerial anoxic extent ≥10% by testing the predictive potential of variables related to basin morphometry, depths of lake thermal stratbut lake morphometry and stratification dynamics are the most important factors in the development of anoxic extent in low-nutrient temperate lakes. Our approach informs studies concerned with identifying key factors that influence regime shifts in a variety of ecosystems.

The present study tested whether the long-acting oxytocin-analogue carbetocin has anti-nociceptive effects in multi-modal experimental pain in humans.
Twenty-five male volunteers received carbetocin 100 mcg and placebo (0.9% NaCl) on two different sessions in a randomized, double-blinded, cross-over design. Multi-modal quantitative sensory testing (QST) including a model of capsaicin-induced hyperalgesia and allodynia were performed at baseline and at 10, 60 and 120min after drug administration. QST data were analysed using mixed linear and logistic regression models. Carbetocin plasma concentrations and oxytocin receptor genotypes were quantified and assessed in an exploratory fashion.

Here, we tested how 30 years of decadal prescribed burning affected C and nitrogen (N) in plants, detritus, and soils in coniferous forests in the Sierra Nevada mountains, USA. Tree basal area and litter stocks were resilient to fire, but fire reduced forest floor C by 77% (-36.4 Mg C/ha). In mineral soils, fire reduced C that was free from minerals by 41% (-4.4 Mg C/ha) but not C associated with minerals, and only in depths ≤ 5 cm. Fire also transformed the properties of remaining mineral soil organic matter by increasing the proportion of C in a pyrogenic form (from 3.2% to 7.5%) and associated with minerals (from 46% to 58%), suggesting the remaining soil C is more resistant to decomposition.

Specifically, the Mg-based electrode showed clear and stable onset response, and excellent signal-to-noise ratio during spontaneous-activity recordings and three repeats of stimulus-evoked recordings at two different anatomical locations in the auditory cortex. During 10 days of immersion in artificial cerebrospinal fluid (aCSF) in vitro, PGS/PEDOT-coated Mg microelectrodes showed slower degradation and less change in impedance than PEDOT-coated Mg electrodes. The biodegradable PGS coating protected the PEDOT coating from delamination, and prolonged the mechanical integrity and electrical properties of Mg-based microelectrode. Mg-based novel microelectrodes should be further studied toward clinical translation because they can potentially eliminate the risks and costs associated with secondary surgeries for removal of failed or no longer needed electrodes. Keratins are a family of fibrous proteins anticipated to possess wide-ranging biomedical applications due to their abundance, physicochemical properties and intrinsic biological activity. This review mainly focuses on the biomaterials derived from three major sources of keratins; namely human hair, wool and feather, that have effective applications in tissue engineering, wound healing and drug delivery. This article offers five viewpoints regarding keratin i) an introduction to keratin protein extraction and keratin-based scaffold fabrication methods ii) applications in nerve and bone tissue engineering iii) a review on the keratin dressings applied to different types of wounds to facilitate wound healing and thereby repair the skin iv) the utilization of keratinous materials as a carrier system for therapeutics with a controlled manner v) a discussion regarding the main challenges for using keratin in biomedical applications as well as its future prospects. However, only a very few studies have been reported on the use of hydrogel rings with low cytotoxicity for vaginal drug delivery applications. Moreover, the effect of nanoparticles on hydrogel vaginal rings has not been clearly evaluated. To overcome these challenges, we hereby developed nanocomposite hydrogel rings based on polyacrylamide-sodium carboxymethyl cellulose-montmorillonite nanoparticles in the ring-shaped aluminum mold for controlled drug delivery. The hydrogel rings were synthesized by using N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide, N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl ethylene diamine, and ammonium persulfate, as a crosslinker, accelerator, and initiator, respectively. The obtained rings were 5.5 cm in diameters and 0.5 cm in rims. The aim of this work was to develop a bioresorbable, biodegradable and biocompatible synthetic polymer with good mechanical properties for bone tissue engineering applications. Polylactic acid (PLA) scaffolds were generated by 3D printing using the fused deposition modelling method, and reinforced by incorporation of graphene oxide (GO). Morphological analysis by scanning electron microscopy indicated that the scaffold average pore size was between 400 and 500 μm. Topography imaging revealed a rougher surface upon GO incorporation (Sa = 5.8 μm for PLA scaffolds, and of 9.9 μm for PLA scaffolds with 0.2% GO), and contact angle measurements showed a transition from a hydrophobic surface (pure PLA scaffolds) to a hydrophilic surface after GO incorporation. PLA thermomechanical properties were enhanced by GO incorporation, as shown by the 70 °C increase of the degradation peak (thermal gravimetric analysis). However, GO incorporation did not change significantly the melting point assessed by differential scanning calorimetry. Physicochemical analyses by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the filler presence. Tensile testing demonstrated that the mechanical properties were improved upon GO incorporation (30% increase of the Young's modulus with 0.3% GO). Specifically, the Mg-based electrode showed clear and stable onset response, and excellent signal-to-noise ratio during spontaneous-activity recordings and three repeats of stimulus-evoked recordings at two different anatomical locations in the auditory cortex. During 10 days of immersion in artificial cerebrospinal fluid (aCSF) in vitro, PGS/PEDOT-coated Mg microelectrodes showed slower degradation and less change in impedance than PEDOT-coated Mg electrodes. The biodegradable PGS coating protected the PEDOT coating from delamination, and prolonged the mechanical integrity and electrical properties of Mg-based microelectrode. Mg-based novel microelectrodes should be further studied toward clinical translation because they can potentially eliminate the risks and costs associated with secondary surgeries for removal of failed or no longer needed electrodes. The aim of this work was to develop a bioresorbable, biodegradable and biocompatible synthetic polymer with good mechanical properties for bone tissue engineering applications. Polylactic acid (PLA) scaffolds were generated by 3D printing using the fused deposition modelling method, and reinforced by incorporation of graphene oxide (GO). Morphological analysis by scanning electron microscopy indicated that the scaffold average pore size was between 400 and 500 μm. Topography imaging revealed a rougher surface upon GO incorporation (Sa = 5.8 μm for PLA scaffolds, and of 9.9 μm for PLA scaffolds with 0.2% GO), and contact angle measurements showed a transition from a hydrophobic surface (pure PLA scaffolds) to a hydrophilic surface after GO incorporation. PLA thermomechanical properties were enhanced by GO incorporation, as shown by the 70 °C increase of the degradation peak (thermal gravimetric analysis). However, GO incorporation did not change significantly the melting point assessed by differential scanning calorimetry. Physicochemical analyses by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the filler presence. Our 40Ar/39Ar data with a weighted mean age of 809 ± 12 ka provide for the first time unequivocal dates for bifacial production at Bose, broadly consistent with the precise Australasian tektite age of 788.1 ± 2.8 ka, recently published by other investigators. The relatively important errors reported here suggest sample contamination by clasts or bubbles for the oldest aliquots and alteration for the younger ones. The lithic assemblage from layers 4 and 5 of the Nalai site is quite similar to that found at other sites in the Bose Basin. The assemblages are dominated by choppers, but bifaces, picks, and unifaces give a Mode 2 and Acheulean-type character to the series. The high frequency of the round tongue-shaped tip, a low elongation index, and a wide and thick base characterize the Large Cutting Tools. These results contribute to resolving ongoing debates on the timing and origin of bifaces and the Acheulean in China.

Fundamental frequency values differed significantly according to gender with higher measures in girls. Mean values of the fundamental frequency were 258.57Hz±39.69, jitter percentage 0.85%±0.67, shimmer percentage 1.59%±1.03, fundamental tremors 1.64HZ ± 0.421, maximum phonation time 4.81sec. ± 1.73 and harmonic/noise ratio were 15.34dB±10.65. A declvironment seems to influence some of the vocal acoustic parameters in children.

There were 1279 patients with neck trauma of which 686 (53.6%) were identified as sustaining PCT. Patients with PCT were older (13.2 vs 11.8yr, p=.001), and were more likely to be male (65.9% vs 54.8%, p<.001) and African-American (21.9% vs 15.9, p=.01). PCT patients were less likely to have a vascular injury (6.1% vs 20.1%, p<.001) and they were more likely to undergo airway evaluation (8.3% vs 2.2%, p<.001). Within the PCT group, 11.5% had open pharyngeal/esophageal lacerations, 6.1% had open tracheal injuries, 2.0% had open thyroid injuries, and 1.6% had open laryngeal injuries. To explore alternatives to such whack-a-mole strategies, we simulated in patient-derived xenograft models the situation of patients receiving first-line TKIs. Monotherapies comprising approved first-line TKIs were compared to combinations with antibodies specific to EGFR and HER2. We observed uniform and strong superiority of all drug combinations over the respective monotherapies. Prolonged treatments, high TKI dose, and specificity were essential for drug-drug cooperation. Blocking pathways essential for mitosis (e.g., FOXM1), along with downregulation of resistance-conferring receptors (e.g., AXL), might underlie drug cooperation. Student-led clinics (SLCs) offer unique clinical placement experiences and address unmet community rehabilitation needs. There is growing evidence that SLCs provide high-quality experiential practice and adequate quality of patient care. The purpose of this study was to evaluate patient satisfaction with student-led care and students' perception of their learning experiences in a student-led physiotherapy clinic.
Eight participants with total hip arthroplasty attended 6weeks of student-led group exercise classes. As a marker of quality of care, we assessed key outcomes including walking speed and endurance, lower extremity function, falls risk and self-reported quality of life after 3 and 6weeks. Patients completed a satisfaction survey at the end of the program. Ten students who completed a placement during this time shared their perception of learning in the SLC.

EGFR mutations identify lung cancer patients who can derive benefit from TKIs, but most patients develop resistance to the first-, second-, and third-generation drugs. To explore alternatives to such whack-a-mole strategies, we simulated in patient-derived xenograft models the situation of patients receiving first-line TKIs. Monotherapies comprising approved first-line TKIs were compared to combinations with antibodies specific to EGFR and HER2. We observed uniform and strong superiority of all drug combinations over the respective monotherapies. Prolonged treatments, high TKI dose, and specificity were essential for drug-drug cooperation. Blocking pathways essential for mitosis (e.g., FOXM1), along with downregulation of resistance-conferring receptors (e.g., AXL), might underlie drug cooperation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate patient satisfaction with student-led care and students' perception of their learning experiences in a student-led physiotherapy clinic. Eight participants with total hip arthroplasty attended 6weeks of student-led group exercise classes. As a marker of quality of care, we assessed key outcomes including walking speed and endurance, lower extremity function, falls risk and self-reported quality of life after 3 and 6weeks. Patients completed a satisfaction survey at the end of the program. Ten students who completed a placement during this time shared their perception of learning in the SLC. It has two subtypes Hallopeau variant and Neumann variant. Cerebriform tongue, a morphology with typical pattern of sulci and gyri over dorsum of the tongue, is a well-known sign in pemphigus vegetans. We are presenting an unusual case of pemphigus vegetans with extensive involvement of mucosae, trunk, extremities including both extensors and flexural areas with verrucous paronychia and fissured tongue. During clinical exam we recognized multiple cutaneous vesicles, erosions and ulcers on mucosal sites. Clinical, histopathological, and direct and indirect immunofluorescence findings were compatible with pemphigus vegetans. Patient had completed her family so treated with intravenous dexamethasone-cyclophosphamide pulse (DCP) regimen with excellent response. We highlight the importance of searching for clinical and histological features that may differentiate these entities, which is crucial to select an adequate therapeutic and surveillance strategy. Clinically, the giant congenital nevus is greater than 20 cm in size, pigmented and often hairy. The risk of malignant melanoma for the giant nevi is almost 6%. Fifty percent of the melanomas develop by the age of 2 years and, 80% of the melanomas develop by the age of 7 years. Hence, early management is of paramount importance. Herein, we present a case of giant nevi along with a review of the literature in order to bring awareness among clinicians towards this rare albeit significant entity. A 24-year-old woman having characteristic asymptomatic and progressive, hyperkeratotic papular lesions involving the scalp, face, upper trunk, and dorsal hands and feet was diagnosed clinicopathologically as Darier's disease. She was treated successfully with oral Vitamin A 25000 IU given twice daily. The response was apparent within 4 weeks and most lesions cleared in 2 months without any adverse effects. Perforating calcific elastosis, (periumbilical perforating pseudoxanthoma elasticum), an uncommon acquired localized cutaneous dermatoses, is characterized by transepidermal elimination of modified elastic fibres. It is usually seen in middle-aged obese multiparous women as well-defined periumbilical hyperpigmented atrophic plaques. We report a case of a 66-year-old female who presented with a mildly pruritic hyperpigmented periumbilical plaque of 2 years duration. Histopathology studies revealed multiple fragmented, thick, short, and curly eosinophilic fibers; along with granular basophilic material in the dermis, which stained positive for calcium and elastin, thus clinching the diagnosis of perforating calcific elastosis. There were no features of hereditary pseudoxanthoma elasticum. We report this case for its rarity. We report three patients of monilethrix who presented with complaints of sparse and brittle hair from early childhood. All three patients had multiple discrete hyperkeratotic papules over the scalp. Dermoscopy revealed beaded appearance of hair with the presence of elliptical nodes and intermittent constrictions on the hair shafts as well as broken hairs, which were confirmed with routine microscopic examination of hair. Dermoscopy helps in easier and faster diagnosis of monilethrix. SDRIFE is most commonly associated with the use of beta-lactam antibiotics. There is only one case report describing SDRIFE due to intake of doxycycline in literature. Previously reported case describes the characteristic morphology of well-defined macular erythema over the flexural and intertriginous area. We here in report a 38-year-old male presented with unusual morphology of SDRIFE, and well circumscribed erythematous patches suggestive of FDE on the thigh and **** after doxycycline intake. Histopathology was consistent with SDRIFE and FDE respectively. The skin lesions improved with 5 days of 40 mg oral prednisolone. After 6 weeks, drug provocation with doxycycline was done following which patient developed itching and erythema over the older sites. Though there is a single published report of SDRIFE due to doxycycline, our case had additional findings of having pigmented FDE lesions along with flexural lesions of SDRIFE.

Although anxiety disorders are one of the most common mental illness in population, antianxiety drugs often only have single action targets, require long-term use, and are associated with many adverse reactions and dependencies. The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was broken out in December 2019 and soon became a global health emergency. Effective treatment for COVID-19 is urgently needed. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the antiviral effect of Arbidol vs. Chloroquine in treating COVID-19.
We retrospectively analyzed 62 patients with COVID-19 diagnosed according to the guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19 in China. They were divided into two groups depending on the antiviral drugs that they received. Participants in the Arbidol group (n=42) received 0.2 g Arbidol, tid for 10 days,and those in Chloroquine group (n=20) received 500 mg Chloroquine, bid for 10 days. The coronavirus negative conversion time and the length of hospital stay were analyzed and compared between the two groups.
There was no significant difference in demographic and clinical characteristics between the two groups. After antiviral treatment, the nasopharyngeal specimen negative conversion time of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and the length of hospital stay in the Arbidol group were significantly shorter than those in the Chloroquine group (18.50 vs. 25.05 days, P=0.001; 23.52 vs. 28.75 days, P=0.001). Adverse events observed during the antiviral treatment period were comparable between the two groups. Overall, 3 (7.14%) participants in the Arbidol group and 4 (20.0%) in the Chloroquine group experienced adverse events during antiviral treatment.
These results suggest that Arbidol is advantageous over Chloroquine in terms of the SARS-CoV-2 negative conversion and the length of hospital stay in treating COVID-19 patients.

Patients with diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) may experience depression. Growing evidence shows that depression interacts with immunity. However, the relationship between depression and immunity among DLBCL patients has not been investigated, despite reports indicating that patients with DLBCL often suffer from depression.
To accurately investigate the relationship between depression and immunity, 82 primarily diagnosed middle-aged patients with DLBCL who received standard chemotherapy were enrolled. The patients were divided into depressed and nondepressed groups according to Zung Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) scores. Prozac was used to treat patients with depression until their symptoms were alleviated. The concentration of immunosuppressive acidic protein (IAP); percentages of cluster of differentiation (CD)3+, CD4+, and CD8+ T lymphocytes and CD56+ natural killer (NK) cells; absolute lymphocyte count (ALC); and neutrophil--lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were calculated at enrollment and after treatment.
A higher score on the depression test was positively associated with serum IAP levels and NLR, and negatively associated with ALC. The levels of NLR and serum IAP in the depressed patients were significantly higher compared to those in the nondepressed patients.
Our results suggest for the first time that IAP and the NLR are closely correlated with depression and may be parameters for predicting depression.

This study was to investigate the effect of high-flux hemodialysis (HD) combined with levocarnitine on vascular calcification, microinflammation, hepcidin, and malnutrition in elderly patients on maintenance HD (MHD).
75 MHD elderly patients admitted to hospital between 1st September 2017 and 31st August 2019 were selected as the study subjects. They were randomly divided by digital table into three groups low-flux group (n=25), high-flux group (n=25) and joint group (n=25). In the low-flux group, dialyzer had an ultrafiltration coefficient 12 mL/(h·mmHg) and effective surface area of 1.4 m2 compared with 59 mL/(h·mmHg) and 1.8 m2 in the high-flux group. After treatment, the calcification of blood vessels was examined by lateral X-ray, pelvic plain film and bilateral positive position. For patients in all groups, the concentrations of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and β 2-microglobulin (β 2-MG) in serum were measured by automatic chemiluminescence; levels of interleukin-6, C-reactive protein (CRP), and tumor e higher (P<0.05).

The patients were divided into depressed and nondepressed groups according to Zung Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) scores. Prozac was used to treat patients with depression until their symptoms were alleviated. The concentration of immunosuppressive acidic protein (IAP); percentages of cluster of differentiation (CD)3+, CD4+, and CD8+ T lymphocytes and CD56+ natural killer (NK) cells; absolute lymphocyte count (ALC); and neutrophil--lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were calculated at enrollment and after treatment. A higher score on the depression test was positively associated with serum IAP levels and NLR, and negatively associated with ALC. The levels of NLR and serum IAP in the depressed patients were significantly higher compared to those in the nondepressed patients. Our results suggest for the first time that IAP and the NLR are closely correlated with depression and may be parameters for predicting depression. This study was to investigate the effect of high-flux hemodialysis (HD) combined with levocarnitine on vascular calcification, microinflammation, hepcidin, and malnutrition in elderly patients on maintenance HD (MHD). 75 MHD elderly patients admitted to hospital between 1st September 2017 and 31st August 2019 were selected as the study subjects. They were randomly divided by digital table into three groups low-flux group (n=25), high-flux group (n=25) and joint group (n=25). In the low-flux group, dialyzer had an ultrafiltration coefficient 12 mL/(h·mmHg) and effective surface area of 1.4 m2 compared with 59 mL/(h·mmHg) and 1.8 m2 in the high-flux group. After treatment, the calcification of blood vessels was examined by lateral X-ray, pelvic plain film and bilateral positive position. For patients in all groups, the concentrations of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and β 2-microglobulin (β 2-MG) in serum were measured by automatic chemiluminescence; levels of interleukin-6, C-reactive protein (CRP), and tumor e higher (P<0.05).
