A number of tick saliva and/or salivary gland molecules have been characterized and shown to be promising candidates for drug development for vertebrate immune diseases. However, further validation of these molecules at the molecular, cellular, and organism levels is now required to progress lead candidates to clinical testing. In this paper, we review the data on the immuno-pharmacological aspects of tick salivary compounds characterized in vitro and/or in vivo and present recent findings on non-coding RNAs that might be exploitable as immunomodulatory therapies.

The objective of this study was to explore the involvement of RANTES in regulating the luminal acidification in the rat epididymis.

    Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) has been linked to superior pathologic treatment response compared to esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) after neoadjuvant chemoradiation. However, the impact of histology on survival remains unclear. It has been suggested, based on epidemiologic similarities, that distal EAC should be grouped with gastric cancers as an entity distinct from distal ESCC, but there is little data to support this recommendation. We therefore aim to compare pathologic treatment response (PTR) and overall survival (OS) in patients with distal EAC versus distal ESCC.

    This retrospective cohort study included patients who underwent esophagectomy for distal esophageal malignancy. Histologic sub-groups were matched (11) using a propensity-score matching approach. Pre-operative clinical parameters, oncologic outcomes and survival were compared between groups.

    1031 distal EC patients, with a median age of 64.4years and a male preponderance (86.5%), underwent esophagectomy at our institution between 1999 and 2019. 939 (91.1%) patients had a diagnosis of EAC and 92 (8.9%) had ESCC. A higher proportion of ESCC patients were female (26.1% vs. 12.1%; P< 0.01) and non-white (12.0% vs. 3.8%; P< 0.01). Propensity-score sub-analysis identified 75 matched pairs. Rates of pathologic complete response (58.0% vs. 48.9%; P= 0.67) and OS (43.0 vs. 52.0months; P= 0.808) were not significantly different between matched groups.

    Although traditionally known to have a better overall PTR compared to EAC, ESCC patients in our large series did not show any improvement in PTR or OS. Treatment recommendations for patients with EAC and ESCC should consider tumor location in addition to histology.

    Little is known about why males are more likely to use electronic cigarettes (ECs) compared with females. This study examined gender differences in reasons for vaping and characteristics of EC used (device type, device capacity, e-liquid nicotine strength, and flavor).

    Data were obtained from 3938 current (≥18 years) at-least-weekly EC users who participated in Wave 2 (2018) ITC Four Country Smoking and Vaping Survey in Canada, the United States, England, and Australia.

    Questionnaire sought information regarding their sociodemographic data, their perceptions and experiences of FCS activities, and their intentions to participate in human-resource development and training activities. Participants were divided into a high intention (HI) and low intention group (LI). The two groups were compared using quantitative and qualitative data.

    Eleven FCSs reported intending to engage in leader-related activities. Factors associated with FCSs' intentions were finding FCS activities rewarding and the willingness to continue performisuch activities.

The majority of microorganisms were Gram-negative strains, of which Escherichia coli was the most common, and urinary tract infection was the most common origin of BSI. Compared to patients who survived, the non-survivor group had a higher SOFA score (6 versus 3, p<0.0001), a higher comorbidity score (5 versus 4, p<0.0001), more respiratory tract infections (28 vs 6 %, p < 0.0001) and fungal infections (5 vs 1 %, p = 0.033), bedridden status (60 vs 25 %, p < 0.0001), and healthcare related infections (60 vs 40 %, p = 0.019). Using Cox multivariable regression analysis, only SOFA score was independently associated with mortality (HR 1.75 [95%IC 1.52-2.03], p<0.0001).

  • Molecular chaperones are a set of conserved proteins that have evolved to assist the folding of many newly synthesized proteins by preventing their misfolding under conditions such as elevated temperatures, hypoxia, acidosis and nutrient deprivation. Molecular chaperones belong to the heat shock protein (HSP) family. They have been identified as important participants in immune functions including antigen presentation, immunostimulation and immunomodulation, and play crucial roles in metabolic rewiring and epigenetic circuits. Growing evidence has accumulated to indicate that metabolic pathways and their metabolites influence the function of immune cells and can alter transcriptional activity through epigenetic modification of (de)methylation and (de)acetylation. However, whether molecular chaperones can regulate metabolic programs to influence immune activity is still largely unclear. In this review, we discuss the available data on the biological function of molecular chaperones to immune responses during inflammation, with a specific focus on the interplay between molecular chaperones and metabolic pathways that drive immune cell fate and function.SARS-CoV-2 has affected people from all age groups, races and ethnicities.     Molecular chaperones are a set of conserved proteins that have evolved to assist the folding of many newly synthesized proteins by preventing their misfolding under conditions such as elevated temperatures, hypoxia, acidosis and nutrient deprivation. Molecular chaperones belong to the heat shock protein (HSP) family. They have been identified as important participants in immune functions including antigen presentation, immunostimulation and immunomodulation, and play crucial roles in metabolic rewiring and epigenetic circuits. Growing evidence has accumulated to indicate that metabolic pathways and their metabolites influence the function of immune cells and can alter transcriptional activity through epigenetic modification of (de)methylation and (de)acetylation. However, whether molecular chaperones can regulate metabolic programs to influence immune activity is still largely unclear. The present study utilized a novel hospital quality metric coined "occupancy rate" based on publicly available data to assess differences in postoperative outcomes among Medicare beneficiaries undergoing HP procedures.

The overall SIRs and HRs of the combined outcome laryngeal or pharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (n = 39) were decreased after antireflux surgery [SIR = 0.62 (95% CI 0.44-0.85) and HR = 0.55 (95% CI 0.38-0.80)]. The point estimates were further decreased >10 years after antireflux surgery [SIR = 0.48 (95% CI 0.26-0.80) and HR = 0.47 (95% CI 0.26-0.85)].     During the study period, 570 (55%) patients underwent early SBRT and 475 (45%) underwent delayed wedge resection. Propensity-score matching was used to create 2 groups of 279 patients each who received early SBRT or delayed resection that were well-matched with regard to baseline characteristics.   • There is widespread interest in estimating the fluorescence properties of natural materials in an image. However, the separation between reflected and fluoresced components is difficult, because it is impossible to distinguish reflected and fluoresced photons without controlling the illuminant spectrum. We show how to jointly estimate the reflectance and fluorescence from a single set of images acquired under multiple illuminants. We present a framework based on a linear approximation to the physical equations describing image formation in terms of surface spectral reflectance and fluorescence due to multiple fluorophores. We relax the non-convex, inverse estimation problem in order to jointly estimate the reflectance and fluorescence properties in a single optimization step. We provide a software implementation of the solver for our method and prior methods. We evaluate the accuracy and reliability of the method using both simulations and experimental data. To evaluate the methods experimentally we built a custom imaging system using a monochrome camera, a filter wheel with bandpass transmissive filters and a small number of light emitting diodes. We compared the methods based upon our framework with the ground truth as well as with prior methods.Image denoising technologies in a Euclidean domain have achieved good results and are becoming mature. However, in recent years, many real-world applications encountered in computer vision and geometric modeling involve image data defined in irregular domains modeled by huge graphs, which results in the problem on how to solve image denoising problems defined on graphs. In this paper, we propose a novel model for removing mixed or unknown noise in images on graphs. The objective is to minimize the sum of a weighted fidelity term and a sparse regularization term that additionally utilizes wavelet frame transform on graphs to retain feature details of images defined on graphs. Specifically, the weighted fidelity term with ℓ1-norm and ℓ2-norm is designed based on a analysis of the distribution of mixed noise. The augmented Lagrangian and accelerated proximal gradient methods are employed to achieve the optimal solution to the problem. Finally, some supporting numerical results and comparative analyses with other denoising algorithms are provided. It is noted that we investigate image denoising with unknown noise or a wide range of mixed noise, especially the mixture of Poisson, Gaussian, and impulse noise. Experimental results reported for synthetic and real images on graphs demonstrate that the proposed method is effective and efficient, and exhibits better performance for the removal of mixed or unknown noise in images on graphs than other denoising algorithms in the literature. The method can effectively remove mixed or unknown noise and retain feature details of images on graphs. We evaluated and compared several networks derived from FlowNet2, one of the most efficient architectures in computer vision. The networks were tested with and without transfer learning and the best configuration was compared against the particle-imaging-velocimetry method, a popular state-of-the-art block-matching algorithm. Rotations are known to be difficult to track from ultrasound images due to a significant speckle decorrelation. We thus focused on images of rotating disks, that could be tracked through speckle features only. Our database consisted of synthetic and in-vitro B-mode images after log-compression, and covered a large range of rotational speeds. One of the FlowNet2 sub-networks, FlowNet2SD, produced competitive results with a motion field error smaller than 1 pixel on real data after transfer learning based on simulated data. These errors remains small for a large velocity range without the need for hyper-parameter tuning, which indicates the high potential and adaptability of deep learning solutions to motion estimation in ultrasound imaging.Dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) analysis using resting-state functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (rs-fMRI) is currently an advanced technique for capturing the dynamic changes of neural activities in brain disease identification. Most existing dFC modeling methods extract dynamic interaction information by using the sliding window-based correlation, whose performance is very sensitive to window parameters. Because few studies can convincingly identify the optimal combination of window parameters, sliding window-based correlation may not be the optimal way to capture the temporal variability of brain activity. In this paper, we propose a novel adaptive dFC model, aided by a deep spatial-temporal feature fusion method, for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) identification. Specifically, we adopt an adaptive Ultra-weighted-lasso recursive least squares algorithm to estimate the adaptive dFC, which effectively alleviates the problem of parameter optimization. However, in recent years, many real-world applications encountered in computer vision and geometric modeling involve image data defined in irregular domains modeled by huge graphs, which results in the problem on how to solve image denoising problems defined on graphs. In this paper, we propose a novel model for removing mixed or unknown noise in images on graphs. The objective is to minimize the sum of a weighted fidelity term and a sparse regularization term that additionally utilizes wavelet frame transform on graphs to retain feature details of images defined on graphs. Specifically, the weighted fidelity term with ℓ1-norm and ℓ2-norm is designed based on a analysis of the distribution of mixed noise. The augmented Lagrangian and accelerated proximal gradient methods are employed to achieve the optimal solution to the problem. Finally, some supporting numerical results and comparative analyses with other denoising algorithms are provided. It is noted that we investigate image denoising with unknown noise or a wide range of mixed noise, especially the mixture of Poisson, Gaussian, and impulse noise. Experimental results reported for synthetic and real images on graphs demonstrate that the proposed method is effective and efficient, and exhibits better performance for the removal of mixed or unknown noise in images on graphs than other denoising algorithms in the literature. The method can effectively remove mixed or unknown noise and retain feature details of images on graphs. Our database consisted of synthetic and in-vitro B-mode images after log-compression, and covered a large range of rotational speeds. One of the FlowNet2 sub-networks, FlowNet2SD, produced competitive results with a motion field error smaller than 1 pixel on real data after transfer learning based on simulated data. To illuminate the effects and elucidate the mechanisms of P. gingivalis on endothelial structural integrity, we developed P. gingivalis infection models in vivo and in vitro. Endothelial cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis were detected. Here, we showed that P. gingivalis can impair endothelial integrity by inhibiting cell proliferation and inducing endothelial mesenchymal transformation and apoptosis of endothelial cells, which reduce the cell levels and cause the endothelium to lose its ability to repair itself. A mechanistic analysis showed that TLR antagonist or NF-κB signalling inhibitor can largely rescue the damaged integrity of the endothelium caused by P. gingivalis, suggesting that TLR-NF-κB signalling plays a vital role in vascular endothelial homeostasis destroyed by P. gingivalis.     This didactical paper addresses the practical case of educational integrity violations induced by student mental illness. It presents a thought-provoking unified viewpoint of the existence of a non-obvious geometric analogy between the irreversible psycho-social process of mental disorder growth and the irreversible pressure forming-induced deformation process of materials extrusion through an angular domain.

Telerehabilitation medicine provides an opportunity to deliver timely, patient and family-centric rehabilitation care while maintaining physical distance and reducing potential COVID-19 exposure for our patients, their caregivers and medical providers. Telerehabilitation medicine also allows for access to PRM care in rural areas or areas without medical specialty, virtual in-home equipment evaluation, and reduced travel burden. Because of these and many other benefits, telerehabilitation medicine will likely become part of our ongoing model of care if barriers to telemedicine continue to be lowered or removed. This paper is intended to establish a foundation for pediatric telerehabilitation medicine visit efficiency and effectiveness in our current environment and into the future.Respiratory dysfunction is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in individuals with cerebral palsy (CP). In children and adults with CP, movement and physical function is always affected. Yet, many clinicians overlook potential for impaired movement and function of the diaphragm muscle (DIAm) in individuals with CP. Since individuals with pre-existing respiratory disorders are at greater risk for respiratory complications if they contract COVID-19, understanding potential risks to individuals with CP is important. In this review we present research on respiratory function and DIAm force generation in children with CP. We compare this clinical work to basic science research investigating phrenic motor neuron and DIAm motor unit dysfunction in an animal model with CP symptoms, the spa mouse. Finally, we integrate the clinical and basic science work in respiratory function in CP, discussing potential for individuals with CP to have severe respiratory symptoms from COVID-19.

For children with disabilities who receive special education services, access to in-person education and other resources at school is particularly important. The American Academy of Pediatrics advocates for students to attend school in person, without specifics for how children with disabilities can safely return to school. To appropriately plan and accommodate children with disabilities we must prioritize safety, allow for adherence to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, and preserve essential school staff. The less cumbersome default of confining students with disabilities to home is not acceptable. We provide an outline describing why Individual Education Plans and 504 plans are important, how they are related to the COVID-19 pandemic, and recommendations for measures to help with safe return to school for children with disabilities.The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated many changes in medicine including the transition from providing care in person to providing care via technology enabled telemedicine. The benefits of telemedicine visits with a Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) provider, also known as telerehabilitation medicine visits, are numerous. Telerehabilitation medicine provides an opportunity to deliver timely, patient and family-centric rehabilitation care while maintaining physical distance and reducing potential COVID-19 exposure for our patients, their caregivers and medical providers. Telerehabilitation medicine also allows for access to PRM care in rural areas or areas without medical specialty, virtual in-home equipment evaluation, and reduced travel burden. Because of these and many other benefits, telerehabilitation medicine will likely become part of our ongoing model of care if barriers to telemedicine continue to be lowered or removed. This paper is intended to establish a foundation for pediatric telerehabilitation medicine visit efficiency and effectiveness in our current environment and into the future.Respiratory dysfunction is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in individuals with cerebral palsy (CP). In children and adults with CP, movement and physical function is always affected. Yet, many clinicians overlook potential for impaired movement and function of the diaphragm muscle (DIAm) in individuals with CP. Since individuals with pre-existing respiratory disorders are at greater risk for respiratory complications if they contract COVID-19, understanding potential risks to individuals with CP is important. In this review we present research on respiratory function and DIAm force generation in children with CP. We compare this clinical work to basic science research investigating phrenic motor neuron and DIAm motor unit dysfunction in an animal model with CP symptoms, the spa mouse. Finally, we integrate the clinical and basic science work in respiratory function in CP, discussing potential for individuals with CP to have severe respiratory symptoms from COVID-19.

Across 186 independent studies of 18 C3 crops, elevation of [CO2 ] by ca. 200 ppm caused a ca. 18% increase in yield under non-stress conditions. Legumes and root crops showed a greater increase and cereals less. Nitrogen deficiency reduced the average increase to 10%, as did warming by ca. 2°C. Two conclusions of the 2005 analysis were that C4 crops would not be more productive in elevated [CO2 ], except under drought, and that yield responses of C3 crops were diminished by nitrogen deficiency and wet conditions. Both stand the test of time. Further studies of maize and sorghum showed no yield increase, except in drought, while soybean productivity was negatively affected by early growing season wet conditions. Subsequent study showed reduced levels of nutrients, notably Zn and Fe in most crops, and lower nitrogen and protein in the seeds of non-leguminous crops. During the course of the patient's hospital admission, his liver chemistries were consistently elevated. Thus, endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (ERC) with sphincterotomy was performed, despite the anaesthesiological risk associated with his chronic heart failure. However, the ERC and sphincterotomy did not relieve the patient's symptoms and had no apparent effect on his abnormal liver chemistries. By the end of his hospital stay, the patient recovered spontaneously and was discharged with no final conclusion having been reached. An unexpected turn of events led us to conclude upon a diagnosis a few weeks later.

    We included 2030 participants from the Swedish Obese Subjects study who received conventional obesity treatment. First-time detection of HF was obtained by cross-checking the study population with the Swedish National Patient Register and the Swedish Cause of Death Register. We also examined if atrial fibrillation and myocardial infarction as time-dependent variables could predict incident HF The mean age of the study cohort was 48.7years, and 28% were men.
