Of the total, 43.8% of participants were classified as hypertensive, 77.7% were aware of their diagnosis, 69.1% were on pharmacological treatment, and 38.7% were controlled. Of those on antihypertensive medication, 56.0% were controlled. Of those medicated, 42.6% were controlled and of all hypertensive individuals, 19.7% were controlled. We screened 2603 individuals with untreated hypertension and 1285 with inadequately treated hypertension. Angolan MMM18 emerges as a continuation of the Angolan MMM17 study, the largest BP screening campaign undertaken in Angola, enabling us to compare the 2 years. The miR-17-92a cluster is commonly described as oncogenic and it is known as 'oncomiR-1', but this statement is a simplification because miR-18a can act both as an oncogene and a suppressor. In this review we summarize the current knowledge about miR-18a focusing on its regulation, role in cancer biology and utility as a potential biomarker.
Currently there are no effective anti-viral drugs for SARS-CoV-2, so the primary line of defense is to detect infected cases as soon as possible. The high rate of contagion for this virus and the highly nonspecific symptoms of the disease (Coronovirus disease 2019, (Covid-19)) that it causes, such as respiratory symptoms, cough, dyspnea, fever, and viral pneumonia, require the urgent establishment of precise and fast diagnostic tests to verify suspected cases, screen patients, and conduct virus surveillance. Nowadays, several virus detection methods are available for viral diseases, which act on specific properties of each virus or virus family, therefore, further investigations and trials are needed to find a highly efficient and accurate detection method to detect and prevent the outcomes of the disease. Hence, there is an urgent need for more and precise studies in this field. In this review, we discussed the properties of a new generation of coronaviruses (SARS-CoV-2) following routine virus detection methods and proposed new strategies and the use of potential samples for SARS-CoV-2 detection.

The goal is to illustrate that DFT calculations of a simplified model give the same information regarding the reaction scheme and free energy data as for the full model, while it requires **** less computational resources to obtain the data. The pandemic is not only a health crisis, but is also having serious damaging effects on societies, economies and vulnerable groups. Timely response is necessary in order to alleviate human suffering and to prevent irreversible destruction of livelihoods. This paper provides preliminary data on the socio-economic impacts of Covid-19 in the coastal city of Mombasa, Kenya, at the time of government-imposed curfews and cessation of movement. We conducted online surveys for two weeks during the restrictions period. The data was collected using online questionnaires directed at the city residents. The data highlights the mobile gender gap resulting from gender inequalities, residents' reliance on the government for Covid-19 information but lack of trust for government interventions, inadequate provisions of essential services, and the residents' lack of preparedness to tackle similar challenges in the future.Considering that stress condition associated with osteoporosis, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which is essential for central stress response system, is implicated in regulating bone mass accrual. Melanocortin 2 receptor (MC2R), the receptor of adrenocorticotropic hormone is expressed in both adrenal gland cells and bone cells. To elucidate the role of HPA axis in bone metabolism, we assessed the skeletal phenotype of MC2R deficient **** (MC2R -/- ****). We first examined bone mineral density and cortical thickness of femur using dual x-ray absorptiometry and micro-computed tomography. We then conducted histomorphometric analysis to calculate the static and dynamic parameters of vertebrae in MC2R -/- ****. The levels of osteoblastic marker genes were examined by quantitative PCR in primary osteoblasts derived from MC2R -/- ****. Based on these observations, bone mineral density of femur in MC2R -/- **** was increasing relative to litter controls. In this phantom- and cadaver study we investigated the differences of coronary artery calcium (CAC) volume on ultra-high-resolution computed tomography (U-HRCT) scans and conventional CT.
We scanned a coronary calcium phantom and the coronary arteries of five cadavers using U-HRCT in normal- and super-high resolution (NR, SHR) mode. The NR mode was similar to conventional CT; 896 detector channels, a matrix size of 512, and a slice thickness of 0.5 mm were applied. In SHR mode, we used 1792 detector channels, a matrix size of 1024, and a slice thickness of 0.25 mm. The CAC volume on NR- and SHR images were recorded. Differences in the physical- and the calculated CAC volume were defined as the error value and compared between NR- and SHR images of the phantom. Differences between the CAC volume on NR- and SHR scans of the cadavers were also recorded.
The mean error value was lower on SHR- than NR images of the phantom (14.0 %, SD 11.1 vs 20.1 %, SD 15.2, p = 0.01). The mean CAC volume was significantly higher on SHR- than NR images of the cadavers (153.4 mm

Nonketotic hyperglycemia often causes transient visual field defects, but only scattered anecdotes are available in the literature.
We report a patient with homonymous superior quadrantanopsia due to nonketotic hyperglycemia and provide a systematic literature review of the clinical features of 40 previously reported patients (41 in total, including our case) with homonymous visual field defects in association with nonketotic hyperglycemia.
The typical visual field defect was congruous (84.6%), homonymous hemianopsia (87.8%) with macular splitting (61.5%) or sparing (38.5%). It was transient and repetitive in 54.5% of the patients, but it developed as a persistent form in the remainder. Positive visual symptoms such as hallucinations and phosphenes developed in 73.2% of patients. The scalar distances from the mean surfaces of the individual subcortical nuclei were compared between groups, and correlations of the local shape distances with initial Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating Scale Revised (ALS-FRS-R) scores and the delta FRS-R and with the disease duration were analyzed.
ALS patients showed regional shape contractions on the lateral surfaces of both pallida, the lateroposterior surface of the right putamen, and the anterior basal surface of the right accumbens. Delta FRS-R scores were negatively correlated with local shape distances in the right hippocampus and the putamina. The Spinal and Bulbar Muscular Atrophy Functional Rating Scale (SBMAFRS) is a reliable and valid instrument for evaluating the functional status of patients with spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA). This study aimed to validate a Korean version of the SBMAFRS in an SBMA population.

The patients underwent clinical evaluations that included the 6-minute walking test (6MWT), forced vital capacity (FVC), manual muscle test, and the Penetration-Aspiration Scale (PAS). To estimate the stability of the SBMAFRS, the scale was reapplied to a subset of 31 randomly selected patients within 4 weeks of the initial test. The convergent validity was evaluated, and correlations were examined between SBMAFRS items and the muscular force, the total and subscores on the Revised Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating Scale (ALSFRS-R), FVC, PAS score, age at onset, disease duration, and 6MWT results.
The internal consistency of the scale was confirmed by a high Cronbach's alpha (total raw alpha=0.867, total standardized alpha=0.863). The main difficulty when diagnosing leptomeningeal metastases (LMSs) is the low sensitivity of cytology. Cancer cells release cell-free DNA (cfDNA) during proliferation and apoptosis, and so we analyzed the cfDNA level as a biomarker for LMSs in hematologic malignancy.
This study prospectively enrolled 20 patients with hematologic malignancy who underwent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis. LMS was diagnosed based on both CSF cytology and clinical findings.
The CSF level of cfDNA was higher in patients with LMSs (108.17±84.84 ng/mL, mean±standard deviation) than in non-LMS patients (14.23±2.78 ng/mL). The sensitivity of cfDNA was higher than that of cytology (100% vs. 87%).

We report a patient with homonymous superior quadrantanopsia due to nonketotic hyperglycemia and provide a systematic literature review of the clinical features of 40 previously reported patients (41 in total, including our case) with homonymous visual field defects in association with nonketotic hyperglycemia. The typical visual field defect was congruous (84.6%), homonymous hemianopsia (87.8%) with macular splitting (61.5%) or sparing (38.5%). It was transient and repetitive in 54.5% of the patients, but it developed as a persistent form in the remainder. Positive visual symptoms such as hallucinations and phosphenes developed in 73.2% of patients. We investigated the effects of supplementation of a simulated freshwater medium with sodium citrate on the resulting structure, bacterial community composition, and microbial network interactions of an early-stage multispecies biofilm model. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of acquired confocal laser scanning microscopy data confirmed that sodium citrate supplementation distinctly increased biofilm biomass. Sequencing data revealed that the microbial community structure of biofilms grown in sodium citrate-supplemented conditions was characterized with increased relative abundance and dominance of Proteobacteria compared with that of biofilms grown in sodium citrate-free conditions. The average change in areas from a supine to an upright posture was - 77.87 ± 15.99% (P less then 0.0001) in the right internal jugular vein (IJV), - 69.42 ± 23.15% (P less then 0.0001) in the left IJV, - 61.52 ± 12.81% (P less then 0.0001) in the right external jugular vein (EJV), and - 58.91 ± 17.37% (P less then 0.0001) in the left EJV. In contrast, the change in the anterior condylar vein (ACV) from a supine to an upright posture was approximately + 144% (P less then 0.005) on the right side and + 110% (P less then 0.05) on the left side. In addition, according to the qualitative analysis, the posterior venous structures including the anterior condylar confluence (ACC) of the craniocervical junction became more prominent in an upright posture. Here, we report molecular changes associated with phenotypic variation in Paenibacillus polymyxa, a PGPR widely used for biocontrol worldwide, and a simple cultural change that can prevent the variation. Compared to B-type (non-variant) cells of P. polymyxa strain E681, its phenotypic variant, termed as F-type, fails to form spores, does not confer plant growth-promoting effect, and displays altered colony and cell morphology, motility, antagonism against other microbes, and biofilm formation. This variation was observed in all tested strains of P. polymyxa, but the frequency varied among them. RNA-seq analysis revealed differential regulation of many genes involved in sporulation, flagella synthesis, carbohydrate metabolism, and antimicrobial production in F-type cells, consistent with their pleiotropic phenotypic changes. F-type cells's sporulation was arrested at stage 0, and the key sporulation gene spo0A was upregulated only in B-type cells. The phenotypic variation could be prevented by altering the temperature for growth. Ribosomal proteins are highly conserved, many universally so among organisms. All ribosomal proteins are structural parts of the same molecular machine, the ribosome. However, when ribosomal proteins are mutated individually, they often lead to distinct and intriguing phenotypes, including specific human pathologies. This review is an attempt to collect and analyse all the reported phenotypes of each ribosomal protein mutant in several eukaryotes (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Caenorhabditis elegans, Drosophila melanogaster, Danio rerio, Mus musculus, Homo sapiens). These phenotypes were processed with unbiased computational approaches to reveal associations between different phenotypes and the contributions of individual ribosomal protein genes. An overview of gene expression changes in ribosomal protein mutants, with emphasis on ribosome profiling studies, is also presented. The available data point to patterns that may account for most of the observed phenotypes. The information presented here may also inform future studies about the molecular basis of the phenotypes that arise from mutations in ribosomal proteins.The centrosome, a unique membraneless multiprotein organelle, plays a pivotal role in various cellular processes that are critical for promoting cell proliferation. In addition to the diffusion-based propagation model, new modalities of disseminating signalling molecules have been identified. It has been shown that cells can communicate with direct contact through long, thin cellular protrusions between signal sending and receiving cells at a distance. Recent studies have revealed a type of cellular protrusion termed 'airinemes' in zebrafish pigment cell types. They share similarities with previously reported cellular protrusions; however, they also exhibit distinct morphology and features. Airinemes are indispensable for pigment pattern development by mediating long-distance Delta-Notch signalling between different pigment cell types. Notably, airineme-mediated signalling is dependent on skin-resident macrophages. Ribosomal proteins are highly conserved, many universally so among organisms. All ribosomal proteins are structural parts of the same molecular machine, the ribosome. However, when ribosomal proteins are mutated individually, they often lead to distinct and intriguing phenotypes, including specific human pathologies. This review is an attempt to collect and analyse all the reported phenotypes of each ribosomal protein mutant in several eukaryotes (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Caenorhabditis elegans, Drosophila melanogaster, Danio rerio, Mus musculus, Homo sapiens). These phenotypes were processed with unbiased computational approaches to reveal associations between different phenotypes and the contributions of individual ribosomal protein genes. An overview of gene expression changes in ribosomal protein mutants, with emphasis on ribosome profiling studies, is also presented. The available data point to patterns that may account for most of the observed phenotypes. To evaluate the presence, extent, and temporality of transnational neurosurgical partnerships, to understand and inform measures to address neurosurgical deficiencies in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
A Web search was conducted to identify actors from high-income countries (HICs) participating in neurosurgical delivery and/or capacity-building with LMICs from 2010 to 2018. Descriptive data on current neurosurgical partnerships were collected from published case reports, literature reviews, reports from academic institutions, and information on stakeholder Web pages. The level of training and engagement of each partnership was separately graded based on prespecified criteria, in which grade 3 represented partnerships that have most extensive training and engagement, and grade 1, the least extent. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and geospatially depicted on ArcMap GIS software.
A total of 123 unique HIC-LMIC partnerships were described. Of these partnerships, 85 (69%) are derivece resource allocation and present opportunities for future partnership.
Liver injury due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is being increasingly recognized. Abnormal liver chemistry tests of varying severities occur in a majority of patients. However, there is a dearth of accompanying liver histologic studies in these patients.
The current report details the clinical courses of 2 patients having severe COVID-19 hepatitis. Liver biopsies were analyzed under light microscopy, portions of liver tissue were hybridized with a target probe to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 S gene, and small sections from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded liver tissue were processed for electron microscopy.
The liver histology of both cases showed a mixed inflammatory infiltrate with prominent bile duct damage, endotheliitis, and many apoptotic bodies. In situ hybridization and electron microscopy suggest the intrahepatic presence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2, the findings of which may indicate the possibility of direct cell injury.
On the basis of the abundant apoptosis and severe cholangiocyte injury, these histopathologic changes suggest a direct cytopathic injury. Furthermore, some of the histopathologic changes may resemble acute cellular rejection occurring after liver transplantation. These 2 cases demonstrate that severe COVID-19 hepatitis can occur even in the absence of significant involvement of other organs.

Studies were retrieved from selected electronic databases, including PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar. Random-effects model meta-analysis was used to estimate the pooled burden of inadequate dietary diversity and its determinants at a 95% confidence interval with its respective odds ratio (OR) using statistical R-software version 3.6.1. Moreover, quality appraisal of the included studies, publication bias, and level of heterogeneity were checked with subgroup analysis and sensitivity influential test. High blood pressure (HBP) is a proven risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. So, determining the extent of the contribution of the factors associated with HBP seems to be necessary. Accordingly, this study aimed to investigate how **** the prevalence of HBP attributed to obesity and high blood glucose (HBG).
Data were collected from 7612 participants extracted from a screening program in 2018, in Iran, which was conducted on the subjects with the age of 30 years old and older to investigate the prevalence of HBP and their associated risk factors. To collect data, we used a standard checklist in terms of the WHO STEPS manual, and a stratified multistage sampling method was also applied. The adjusted population attributable risk of overweight, obesity, and HBG for HBP was calculated by the logistic regression model using the aflogit module.
Among the studied people, 7.4% of male and 10.8% of female subjects were hypertensive. The adjusted analysis showed that, in men, 27% and 41% and, among women, 19% and excess body weight prevention programs should also be implemented in childhood.

About one million neonates die on the first day of life due to inadequate dietary intake during pregnancy as a result of maternal complication and adverse birth outcomes. This review summarizes the burden of inadequate dietary diversity and its determinants among pregnant women at the national level of Ethiopia. Studies were retrieved from selected electronic databases, including PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar. Random-effects model meta-analysis was used to estimate the pooled burden of inadequate dietary diversity and its determinants at a 95% confidence interval with its respective odds ratio (OR) using statistical R-software version 3.6.1. Data were collected from 7612 participants extracted from a screening program in 2018, in Iran, which was conducted on the subjects with the age of 30 years old and older to investigate the prevalence of HBP and their associated risk factors. To collect data, we used a standard checklist in terms of the WHO STEPS manual, and a stratified multistage sampling method was also applied. For hospitalized patients, all these assays showed a sensitivity of 100 % from day 9 after the symptoms onset. On the other hand, sensitivity was **** lower for patients who did not require hospitalization for COVID-19 confirmed by PCR (from 91.6 % for WANTAI® to 69 % for LIAISON®). These differences do not seem to be due to the antigens chosen by the manufacturers but more to the test formats (IgG detection versus total antibodies). In addition, more than 50 days after a positive PCR for CoV-2-SARS the proportion of positive patients seem to decrease. We did not observe any significant cross-reactions for these techniques with the four other seasonal coronaviruses.
In conclusion, the evaluation and knowledge of the serological tests used is important and should require an optimized strategy adaptation of the analysis laboratories to best meet patient's expectations in the face of this health crisis.

The objective of this study was to conduct an updated systematic review of diagnostic criteria for myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) used in clinical trials of physical therapy interventions from 2007 to 2019.
MEDLINE and Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) were searched using the following MeSH keywords "trigger points," "trigger point," "myofascial trigger point," "myofascial trigger points," "myofascial pain," and "myofascial pain syndrome." The MeSH keywords were combined by using Boolean operators "OR"/"AND." All physiotherapy clinical trials including patients with musculoskeletal conditions characterized by at least 1 active MTrP or latent MTrP in any body area were selected. We pooled data from an individual criterion and criteria combinations used to diagnose MTrPs. The protocol was developed in accordance with the PRISMA-P guidelines.
Of 478 possibly relevant publications, 198 met the inclusion criteria. Of these 198 studies, 129 studies (65.1%) stated specifically the diagnostic criteria t in the literature.

A literature review was conducted to compare placebo responses in a recent trial-which implemented an accurate pain reporting (APR) and placebo response reduction (PRR) training program-with placebo responses in similar previous trials in chronic lower **** pain (CLBP) that did not use such training.

Little is known about the epidemiology of neuropathic pain in primary care patients consulting with low ****-related leg pain. We aimed to describe prevalence, characteristics, and clinical course of low ****-related leg pain patients with and without neuropathic pain, consulting with their family doctor in the United Kingdom.
This was a prospective cohort study. Data were collected using a standardized baseline clinical examination and self-report questionnaires at baseline, 4, 12, and 36 months. We identified cases of neuropathic pain using 3 definitions 2 based on clinical diagnosis (sciatica, with and without evidence of nerve root compression on magnetic resonance imaging), one on the self-report version of Leeds Assessment for Neurological Symptoms and Signs. Differences between patients with and without neuropathic pain were analyzed comparing each definition. Clinical course (mean pain intensity measured as the highest of leg or **** pain intensity mean of 3 Numerical Rating Scales, each 0 to 10) was investigated using linear mixed models over 36 months.
Prevalence of neuropathic pain varied from 48% to 74% according to definition used. At baseline, patients with neuropathic pain had more severe leg pain intensity, lower pain self-efficacy, more patients had sensory loss than those without. Distinct profiles were apparent depending on neuropathic pain definition. Mean pain intensity reduced after 4 months (6.1 to 3.9 [sciatica]), most rapidly in cases defined by clinical diagnosis.

Perceived injustice is a maladaptive cognitive appraisal of pain or injury, characterized by attributions of blame, unfairness, severity of loss, and irreparability of loss. Research suggests that perceived injustice may negatively affect pain outcomes by inhibiting the development of pain-related acceptance. The current study aimed to extend cross-sectional research by testing whether pain acceptance mediates the effects of perceived injustice on pain-related outcomes longitudinally.
Data was analyzed from a prospective study to examine the potential mediating role of pain acceptance on recovery 3 months after an episode of low **** pain. Using Mechanical Turk, we recruited participants who experienced an episode of **** pain within the preceding 2 weeks, 343 of whom completed measures of perceived injustice, pain acceptance, pain ratings, and quality of life at each of 3 timepoints (recruitment, 1 mo later, and 3 mo later). Path analyses were conducted to examine pain acceptance at 1 month as a potential mediator of the relationship between perceived injustice at recruitment and pain intensity, disability, and depressive symptoms at 3 months.
Results indicated that perceived injustice at recruitment was directly related to pain intensity, disability, and depressive symptoms 3 months later, and that pain acceptance partially mediated these relationships.
Although these findings provide further support for pain acceptance as a buffer for the deleterious effects of perceived injustice, they also highlight that adjunctive mechanisms should be investigated to provide more comprehensive clinical insight.

Little is known about the epidemiology of neuropathic pain in primary care patients consulting with low back-related leg pain. We aimed to describe prevalence, characteristics, and clinical course of low back-related leg pain patients with and without neuropathic pain, consulting with their family doctor in the United Kingdom. This was a prospective cohort study. Data were collected using a standardized baseline clinical examination and self-report questionnaires at baseline, 4, 12, and 36 months. We identified cases of neuropathic pain using 3 definitions 2 based on clinical diagnosis (sciatica, with and without evidence of nerve root compression on magnetic resonance imaging), one on the self-report version of Leeds Assessment for Neurological Symptoms and Signs. Differences between patients with and without neuropathic pain were analyzed comparing each definition. Clinical course (mean pain intensity measured as the highest of leg or back pain intensity mean of 3 Numerical Rating Scales, each 0 to 10) was investigated using linear mixed models over 36 months. Prevalence of neuropathic pain varied from 48% to 74% according to definition used. At baseline, patients with neuropathic pain had more severe leg pain intensity, lower pain self-efficacy, more patients had sensory loss than those without. Distinct profiles were apparent depending on neuropathic pain definition. Mean pain intensity reduced after 4 months (6.1 to 3.9 [sciatica]), most rapidly in cases defined by clinical diagnosis. Perceived injustice is a maladaptive cognitive appraisal of pain or injury, characterized by attributions of blame, unfairness, severity of loss, and irreparability of loss. Research suggests that perceived injustice may negatively affect pain outcomes by inhibiting the development of pain-related acceptance. The current study aimed to extend cross-sectional research by testing whether pain acceptance mediates the effects of perceived injustice on pain-related outcomes longitudinally. Data was analyzed from a prospective study to examine the potential mediating role of pain acceptance on recovery 3 months after an episode of low back pain. Using Mechanical Turk, we recruited participants who experienced an episode of back pain within the preceding 2 weeks, 343 of whom completed measures of perceived injustice, pain acceptance, pain ratings, and quality of life at each of 3 timepoints (recruitment, 1 mo later, and 3 mo later). Path analyses were conducted to examine pain acceptance at 1 month as a potential mediator of the relationship between perceived injustice at recruitment and pain intensity, disability, and depressive symptoms at 3 months. Results indicated that perceived injustice at recruitment was directly related to pain intensity, disability, and depressive symptoms 3 months later, and that pain acceptance partially mediated these relationships. With the applications of patterned SGA and/or localized tempering pretreatment, the initial configurations of such thermal-induced morphing systems can also be programmed as needed, resulting in diverse actuation systems with sophisticated three-dimensional structures. More importantly, unlike the normal bilayer actuators, our SGA/PE bilayer, after a constrained tempering process, will spontaneously curl into a roll, which can achieve rolling locomotion under infrared lighting, yielding an untethered light-driven motor. The asymmetric elastoplasticity of SGA endows the SGA-based bi-materials with great application promise in developing untethered soft robotics with high configurational programmability.

DNA damage is a common feature of human spermatozoa associated with an impaired capacity to fertilize the oocyte and an increased mutational load in the offspring. Exposure of human and mouse spermatozoa to cfDNA (calf thymus, mouse liver and salmon testes) in vitro induced a dose-dependent increase in sperm DNA damage that could be effectively suppressed by the concomitant presence of DNase. The induction of such damage was not accompanied by any concomitant change in sperm motility or vitality and was not directly associated with the induction of oxidative stress. In vivo the injection of exogenous DNA again precipitated an increase in sperm DNA fragmentation that could be reversed by the prior administration of DNase. Similarly, the induction of a transient unilateral testicular ischemia induced an increase in DNA fragmentation that was evident within 24 h and sustained for at least 14 days via mechanisms that could be completely suppressed by the prior administration of DNase. We conclude that exogenous cfDNA activates a defensive response in human spermatozoa associated with the nuclease-mediated induction of DNA fragmentation, possibly involving the participation of TLR9 and CD4. These novel insights have significant implications for our understanding of DNA fragmentation in the male germ line and open up new pathways for the remediation of this condition.
More and more U.S. states are legalizing marijuana use for both recreational and medical purposes. This study estimated the prevalence of current marijuana use and identified its individual-level predictors among adult cancer survivors (CS) living in 15 U.S. states and territories.
U.S. nationally representative, cross-sectional data from the 2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Survey (BRFSS) Marijuana Use module were used. A total of 9325 CS was included. Analyses were weighted to account for BRFSS's complex survey design with results generalizable to 4.02 million CS. The outcome was current (past 30-day) marijuana use. Weighted prevalence estimates were computed. Multivariable logistic regression examined individual-level demographic, socio-economic, clinical, and behavioral predictors associated with marijuana use.
Weighted analysis indicated that 9.2% reported current marijuana use, 50.5% of which used it for medical reasons with smoking being the main method of administration, 71.3%. Among racial/ethnic groups, non-Hispanic blacks had the highest prevalence of marijuana use (18.6%). The prevalence of current marijuana use decreased with age (P<.001). CS were more likely to use marijuana if they were male, non-Hispanic black (versus non-Hispanic whites), not married, uninsured, current and former tobacco smoker, binge drinker, ever having depressive disorder, and those who had fair/poor health.
Marijuana use is prevalent among CS and certain subgroups are at higher risk for marijuana use. With the proliferation of marijuana legalization, identifying high-risk CS for marijuana use and informing them about its risks and safety is critical.

Yet, how these established relations differ across groups, such as male and female e-cigarette users, has not been explored. The present study evaluated the effect of worry on perceived barriers for quitting e-cigarettes, perceptions of benefits for e-cigarette use, and perceived negative consequences of e-cigarette use across sex. The sample included 584 current e-cigarette users (52.2% female, Mage = 35.15 years, SD = 10.27). Analyses indicated a significant interaction between sex and worry on each criterion variable (perceived benefits b = 0.02, SE = 0.01, t = -2.73, p = .01; perceived barriers for quitting e-cigarettes b = -0.45, SE = 0.08, t = -5.70, p ≤ 0.001; negative consequences to use b = -0.033, SE = 0.01, t = -4.50, p less then .001), such that worry was more strongly related to each outcome among males than females. These findings suggest that sex plays a role in e-cigarette use behaviors and that males may constitute a group that is especially vulnerable to the effects of worry on both positive and negative e-cigarette use perceptions and perceived barriers for quitting e-cigarettes.
To test the preliminary impact and participant experience/satisfaction of Invite Only VR A Vaping Prevention Game (Invite Only VR), an electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) prevention game prototype using virtual reality (VR) hardware.
Forty-seven adolescents (38 boys; mean age=14.23years, SD=0.914) were enrolled to test the preliminary impact of Invite Only VR on knowledge, perceived likelihood of using e-cigarettes, perceptions of harm, attitudes, social norms, and self-efficacy to refuse e-cigarettes using a pre/post design. Experience/satisfaction was measured following gameplay. Paired-samples t-tests and associated effect sizes were used to assess changes in the dependent variables. Descriptive statistics were used to report on gameplay experience/satisfaction.
From pre- to post-gameplay, players significantly increased in knowledge (t(34)=-5.594, p<.001, Cohen's d=0.946) and perceptions of e-cigarette harm (t(34)=-3.370, p=.002, Cohen's d=0.530) and decreased their perceived likelihood of using e-cigarettes in the future (t(35)=2.140, p=.039, Cohen's d=1.274). No significant change was found for attitudes towards e-cigarettes, social norm perceptions, nor refusal self-efficacy. Participants reported that they enjoyed playing the game (M=3.00, SD=0.99) and that they would tell their friends to play (M=3.08, SD=0.91).
Invite Only VR may help players develop knowledge and correct harm perceptions regarding e-cigarettes while reducing their perceived likelihood of using them in the future. Participant enjoyment also provides an initial indication that the intervention may be acceptable for use with adolescents.
