  • We have designed a new low-pass Fresnel zone plate (LPFZP) to extend soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to the lithium K absorption edge in a scanning transmission x-ray microscope (STXM). The performance of the LPFZP was evaluated in the STXM beamline at the UVSOR-III Synchrotron (Okazaki, Japan); the contribution of the higher-order harmonics is successfully suppressed to 0.1% of the fundamental energy, and a spatial resolution of 72 nm and an energy resolution (E/∆E) above 1000 are achieved as expected. XAS spectra of lithium are measured successfully in an electrode of a lithium-ion battery.In this article, a simple and efficient deuterated polyethylene target preparation method is described. The method of convenient removal of the targets from a casting surface without any cryogenic freezing has been adopted. The difference in thermal expansion properties of the target material and casting surface (glass) is utilized. The target thickness was determined from 3 - α energy loss in the prepared targets. The target thickness varies from 100 µg/cm2 to 350 µg/cm2. The thickness variation in these foils was between 4% and 10%. The material retention property of a deuterated foil has been verified by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and an attenuated total reflection method.To investigate the fundamentals of liquid oxygen droplet combustion in hydrogen under microgravity conditions, a drop tower apparatus has been developed. In a cryogenic combustion chamber cooled with liquid nitrogen, single oxygen droplets with a diameter of 1 mm are suspended at the tip of a thin suspender. Ignition is accomplished after microgravity conditions are reached by a near-infrared laser, which generates a plasma spark positioned in the immediate vicinity of the oxygen droplet. The subsequent combustion is investigated with various optical diagnostics. Shadowgraph imaging is used to determine the initial droplet size and the droplet diameter regression with high temporal resolution. In addition, the position and diameter of the flame are determined by OH chemiluminescence imaging. The oxygen/hydrogen combustion at two different pressure levels is reported. At a pressure of 0.1 MPa, irregular structures appear to form on the droplet surface during the combustion process, which lasts 137 ms before the droplet is completely consumed. The formation of these irregular structures is consistent with the condensation and freezing of water vapor in the cold-temperature region near the droplet surface. At a higher pressure of 4 MPa (reduced pressure pr,O2 =0.79), the water ice formation is significantly reduced due to the shorter burning time of 66 ms and the closer proximity of the flame to the droplet surface. The measured burning constant is k0.1 = 5.5 mm2/s at 0.1 MPa and k4 = 7.1 mm2/s at 4 MPa, respectively. This increase with increasing pressure is consistent with the smaller flame standoff distance.There is an increasing interest in synchronization of multiple spark gap switches while maintaining compact geometry, less-complex circuit, and low jitter switching performances. A study of the effect of electrical parameters on switching performances is necessary for the operation of a large number of simultaneous switches. A miniaturized trigatron switch assembly (Outer diameter 35 mm and thickness 5 mm) is developed and experimentally investigated for switching performance. A polyether ether ketone insulator and brass conductor electrodes are utilized due to their high insulation and solderable properties, respectively. Important switching parameters, delay time, switch time delay, jitter in delay time, discharging peak current, trigger break down time, and trigger break down voltage, are studied under four typical conditions. These four conditions are (a) a fast trigger (FT) with normal circuit inductance (10 ns, 20 nH); (b) a fast trigger with higher circuit inductance (10 ns and 500 nH); (c) a slow trigger (ST) with normal circuit inductance (250 ns and 20 nH) and (d) a slow trigger with higher circuit inductance (250 ns and 500 nH). Subsequently, three trigatron spark gaps (4 kV, 5 kA, >100 shots, 4 nH, and 20 mΩ) are simultaneously switched within 5 ns time. Many experimental results are the first of their kind in terms of compact switch development, switching performance, and single electrical trigger based synchronization. This paper will also add a good value to presently available knowledge through systematically implementing the simultaneous switching condition for the generation of 5 kA, 50 ns current pulses. These low cost (US$40) trigatron switches can be utilized in low energy, compact pulsed power applications.As per the voices in the precision manufacturing industries, the machining of brittle materials such as glass and diamond is intricate owing to their thermo-mechanical properties. Machining of the brittle material with a localized heating method produced softness in the work material during the operation, resulting in microcracks and voids on the finished surface due to thermal stresses. Such pressing issues are solved by dry machining with bulk heating. The objective of the present research is to develop a sophisticated lab-made portable multipurpose heating setup for enabling various potent applications such as machining, elevated temperature scratch and indentation tests, and grinding, among other things, on hard and brittle materials. The mentioned process is done by softening the material with preheating of the samples.   • The result of tenfold CV effectively verifies the robustness of the model as the average F1 score obtained is more than 0.970. Thus, the proposed model can be used as a useful and reliable tool to assist dental care professionals in dentistry.Molecular species identification plays a crucial role in archaeology and palaeontology, especially when diagnostic morphological characters are unavailable. Molecular markers have been used in forensic science to trace the geographic origin of wildlife products, such as ivory. So far, only a few studies have applied genetic methods to both identify the species and circumscribe the provenance of historic wildlife trade material. Here, by combining ancient DNA methods and genome skimming on a historical elephantid tooth found in southwestern Portugal, we aimed to identify its species, infer its placement in the elephantid phylogenetic tree, and triangulate its geographic origin. According to our results the specimen dates **** to the eighteenth century CE and belongs to a female African forest elephant (non-hybrid Loxodonta cyclotis individual) geographically originated from west-west-central Africa, from areas where one of the four major mitochondrial clades of L. cyclotis is distributed. Historical evidence supports our inference, pointing out that the tooth should be considered as post-Medieval raw ivory trade material between West Africa and Portugal. Our study provides a comprehensive approach to study historical products and artefacts using archaeogenetics and contributes towards enlightening cultural and biological historical aspects of ivory trade in western Europe.Reduction of early hospital readmissions is a declared goal in the United States economic and quality improvement agenda. A retrospective study was performed using the Nationwide Readmissions Database from 2010 to 2014. Our primary aim was to study the rate of early readmissions and its predictors in liver transplant recipients (LTRs). Our secondary aims were to determine the trends of LT, reasons for readmission, costs and predictors of calendar year mortality. Multivariable logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards models were utilized. The 30-day readmission rate was 30.6% among a total of 25,054 LTRs. Trends of LT were observed to be increased in patients > 65 years (11.7-17.8%, p  10 days were significant predictor of calendar year mortality in LTRs. Approximately one third of patients require early admission after LT. Early readmission not only increases burden on healthcare, but is also associated with calendar year mortality. Strategies should be implemented to reduce readmission in patients with high risk of readmission identified in our study.Phospholipase C (PLC) enzymes are key virulence factors in several pathogenic bacteria. Burkholderia pseudomallei, the causative agent of melioidosis, possesses at least three plc genes (plc1, plc2 and plc3). We found that in culture medium plc1 gene expression increased with increasing pH, whilst expression of the plc3 gene was pH (4.5 to 9.0) independent. Expression of the plc2 gene was not detected in culture medium. All three plc genes were expressed during macrophage infection by B. pseudomallei K96243. Comparing B. pseudomallei wild-type with plc mutants revealed that plc2, plc12 or plc123 mutants showed reduced intracellular survival in macrophages and reduced plaque formation in HeLa cells. However, plc1 or plc3 mutants showed no significant differences in plaque formation compared to wild-type bacteria. These findings suggest that Plc2, but not Plc1 or Plc3 are required for infection of host cells. In Galleria mellonella, plc1, plc2 or plc3 mutants were not attenuated compared to the wild-type strain, but multiple plc mutants showed reduced virulence. To fill this gap, here BBX protein encoding genes in tomato genome were characterised. The robust phylogeny obtained revealed how the domain diversity in this protein family evolved in Viridiplantae and allowed the precise identification of 31 tomato SlBBX proteins. The mRNA profiling in different organs revealed that SlBBX genes are regulated by light and their transcripts accumulation is directly affected by the chloroplast maturation status in both vegetative and fruit tissues. As tomato fruits develops, three SlBBXs were found to be upregulated in the early stages, controlled by the proper chloroplast differentiation and by the PHYTOCHROME (PHY)-dependent light perception. Upon ripening, other three SlBBXs were transcriptionally induced by RIPENING INHIBITOR master transcriptional factor, as well as by PHY-mediated signalling and proper plastid biogenesis. The nutritional composition of these bacterial foods is unique, and when fed to C. elegans, can differentially alter multiple life history traits including development, reproduction, and metabolism. In light of the influence each food source has on specific physiological attributes, we comprehensively assessed the impact of these bacteria on animal health and devised a blueprint for utilizing different food combinations over the lifespan, in order to promote longevity.

  • Mammalian brain glycome remains a relatively poorly understood area compared to other large-scale "omics" studies, such as genomics and transcriptomics due to the inherent complexity and heterogeneity of glycan structure and properties. Here, we first performed spatial and temporal analysis of glycome expression patterns in the mammalian brain using a cutting-edge experimental tool based on liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, with the ultimate aim to yield valuable implications on molecular events regarding brain functions and development. We observed an apparent diversity in the glycome expression patterns, which is spatially well-preserved among nine different brain regions in mouse. Next, we explored whether the glycome expression pattern changes temporally during postnatal brain development by examining the prefrontal cortex (PFC) at different time point across six postnatal stages in mouse. We found that glycan expression profiles were dynamically regulated during postnatal developments. A similar result was obtained in PFC samples from humans ranging in age from 39 d to 49 y. Novel glycans unique to the brain were also identified. Interestingly, changes primarily attributed to sialylated and fucosylated glycans were extensively observed during PFC development. Finally, based on the vast heterogeneity of glycans, we constructed a core glyco-synthesis map to delineate the glycosylation pathway responsible for the glycan diversity during the PFC development. Our findings reveal high levels of diversity in a glycosylation program underlying brain region specificity and age dependency, and may lead to new studies exploring the role of glycans in spatiotemporally diverse brain functions.Stem cells undergo differentiation in complex and dynamic environments wherein instructive signals fluctuate on various timescales. Our understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of acute diarrheal disease as well as the sequelae linked to ETEC are still evolving. It has long been known that ETEC heat-labile toxin (LT) activates production of cAMP in the cell, signaling the modulation of cellular ion channels that results in a net efflux of salt and water into the intestinal lumen, culminating in watery diarrhea. However, as LT also promotes ETEC adhesion to intestinal epithelial cells, we postulated that increases in cAMP, a critical cellular "second messenger," may be linked to changes in cellular architecture that favor pathogen-host interactions. Indeed, here we show that ETEC use LT to up-regulate carcinoembryonic antigenrelated cell adhesion molecules (CEACAMs) on the surface of small intestinal epithelia, where they serve as critical bacterial receptors. Moreover, we show that bacteria are specifically recruited to areas of CEACAM expression, in particular CEACAM6, and that deletion of this CEACAM abrogates both bacterial adhesion and toxin delivery. Collectively, these results provide a paradigm for the molecular pathogenesis of ETEC in which the bacteria use toxin to drive up-regulation of cellular targets that enhances subsequent pathogen-host interactions.Effective therapies are urgently needed for the SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 pandemic. We identified panels of fully human monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) from large phage-displayed Fab, scFv, and VH libraries by panning against the receptor binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) glycoprotein. A high-affinity Fab was selected from one of the libraries and converted to a full-size antibody, IgG1 ab1, which competed with human ACE2 for binding to RBD.     Mammalian brain glycome remains a relatively poorly understood area compared to other large-scale "omics" studies, such as genomics and transcriptomics due to the inherent complexity and heterogeneity of glycan structure and properties. Here, we first performed spatial and temporal analysis of glycome expression patterns in the mammalian brain using a cutting-edge experimental tool based on liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, with the ultimate aim to yield valuable implications on molecular events regarding brain functions and development. We observed an apparent diversity in the glycome expression patterns, which is spatially well-preserved among nine different brain regions in mouse. Next, we explored whether the glycome expression pattern changes temporally during postnatal brain development by examining the prefrontal cortex (PFC) at different time point across six postnatal stages in mouse. We found that glycan expression profiles were dynamically regulated during postnatal developments. A similar result was obtained in PFC samples from humans ranging in age from 39 d to 49 y. Novel glycans unique to the brain were also identified. Interestingly, changes primarily attributed to sialylated and fucosylated glycans were extensively observed during PFC development. Finally, based on the vast heterogeneity of glycans, we constructed a core glyco-synthesis map to delineate the glycosylation pathway responsible for the glycan diversity during the PFC development. Our understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of acute diarrheal disease as well as the sequelae linked to ETEC are still evolving. It has long been known that ETEC heat-labile toxin (LT) activates production of cAMP in the cell, signaling the modulation of cellular ion channels that results in a net efflux of salt and water into the intestinal lumen, culminating in watery diarrhea. However, as LT also promotes ETEC adhesion to intestinal epithelial cells, we postulated that increases in cAMP, a critical cellular "second messenger," may be linked to changes in cellular architecture that favor pathogen-host interactions. Indeed, here we show that ETEC use LT to up-regulate carcinoembryonic antigenrelated cell adhesion molecules (CEACAMs) on the surface of small intestinal epithelia, where they serve as critical bacterial receptors. Moreover, we show that bacteria are specifically recruited to areas of CEACAM expression, in particular CEACAM6, and that deletion of this CEACAM abrogates both bacterial adhesion and toxin delivery.   • In functional food advertising, messages are not always easily understandable for the target audience. Current European legislation, enforced through Regulation 1924/2006, specifies that such messages should be clear and precise so as not to mislead the consumer. The objective of this study was to observe consumers' understanding of messages in functional food advertisements. The methodology used was a self-administered survey filled out by 191 students enrolled in a Degree in Advertising and Public Relations at the University of Alicante (Spain). The results suggest that a large number of students do not know what functional food is and obtain information about these products mainly from labelling/packaging. The major means of communication through which they learn about health benefits via advertising is the internet, followed by television. The methanolic extracts of these genotypes were screened for total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), antioxidant, and cholinesterase inhibitory potentials. The observed biological potentials were explained in terms of the outcome of molecular docking and HPLC analyses. Among them, genotype ZNP02 displayed high TPC (88.50 ± 1.23 μg/mL) and showed potent scavenging activity against DPPH (67.03 ± 1.04 μg/mL) and ABTS (65.3 ± 1.74 μg/mL) in comparison to ascorbic acid (68.7 ± 0.47 μg/mL). Moreover, genotypes ZNP01, ZNP02, and ZNP04 displayed potent inhibition against acetyl and butyryl cholinesterases (AChE and BChE) with IC50 values of 21.2, 20.5, and 23.7 μg/mL (AChE) and 22.7, 24.4, and 33.1 μg/mL (BChE), respectively. Furthermore, the individual compounds in the most potent species ZNP01 responsible for potent enzyme inhibition (identified through HPLC-UV analysis), were computed via docking simulation software to the enzyme structures. Among these compounds rutin exhibited significant binding affinity with value of -9.20 kcal/mol. The differences amongst the phytochemical compositions of the selected genotypes highlighted the genotypic variations in them. Based on our results it was concluded that the selected plant can be used as remedy of oxidative stress and neurodegenerative diseases. In HeLa cells, Trolox showed significant antioxidant activity, expressed as the ability to reduce the endogenous ROS production detected by the ROS-sensitive probe 5-(and-6)-chloromethyl-2',7'-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate (CM-H2DCFDA), at low concentrations (range 2.5-15 µM), but exerted a dose-dependent prooxidant effect at higher concentrations after 24 h exposure. The prooxidant effect was paralleled by the reduction in cell viability due to the induction of the apoptotic process. The dual behavior, antioxidant at lower concentrations and prooxidant at higher concentrations, was evident also earlier after 2 h incubation, and it was paralleled by the isotonic shrinkage of the cells, ascribed to AVD. The use of SITS, known Cl- channel blocker, was able to completely inhibit the Trolox-induced isotonic cell shrinkage, demonstrating the involvement of the vitamin E analog in the alteration of cell volume homeostasis and, in turn, in the AVD induction. In patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) caused by COVID-19, venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) is considered a rescue therapy that provides adequate gas exchange. The way in which mechanical ventilation is applied during VV-ECMO is not clear, however it is associated with prognosis. Currently, the mortality rate of COVID-19 patients that receive VV-ECMO stands at approximately 50%. Here, we report three patients that successfully recovered from COVID-19-induced ARDS after VV-ECMO and implementation of an ultra-protective ventilation. This ventilation strategy involved maintaining a peak inspiratory pressure of ≤20 cmH2O and a positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) of ≤ 10 cmH2O, which are lower values than have been previously reported. Thus, we suggest that this ultra-protective ventilation be considered during VV-ECMO as it minimizes the ventilator-induced lung injury.

  • We conclude that substantial variation in antibody generation against coronavirus proteins will influence interpretations of serologic data in the clinical and veterinary settings.Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a common chronic inflammatory disease affecting the oral mucosa. The pathogenesis of OLP is incompletely understood but is thought to be related to the immune system. As the oral cavity is a major reservoir and transmission gateway for bacteria, viruses, and fungi, the microbial composition of the oral cavity could play a role in the pathogenesis of OLP. However, limited by analytic technology and knowledge of the microbial community in the oral cavity, it is not yet clear which pathogens are associated with OLP. Next generation sequencing (NGS) is a powerful tool to identify pathogens for many infectious diseases. In this study, we compared the host cell gene expression profiles and the microbial profiles between OLP patients and matched healthy individuals. We identified the activation of the hepatocyte nuclear factor alpha (HNF4A) network in OLP patients and potential pathogens, including Corynebacterium matruchotii, Fusobacterium periodonticum, Streptococcus intermedius, Streptococcus oralis, and Prevotella denticola. Prevotella denticola is capable of activating the HNF4A gene network. Our findings shed light on the previously elusive association of OLP with various diseases like hepatitis, and indicate that OLP is a T-helper type 17 (Th17) mediated mucosal inflammatory process. The identified molecular pathways and microbes could be used to inform future investigations into OLP pathogenesis and to develop novel therapeutics for OLP treatment.In eukaryotes, the MAP kinase signaling pathway plays pivotal roles in regulating the expression of genes required for growth, development, and stress response. This paper aimed to determine the feasibility of TCTB exercise in older sedentary office workers. Forty office workers aged over 55 years participated in a pilot randomized controlled trial (i.e., 12-week TCTB exercise or Tai Chi exercise only). Feasibility of the TCTB exercise approach was ascertained through the recruitment and enrolment rate, acceptability of the study intervention by participants including retention and adherence rates, participants' learning process, the appropriateness of data collection as well as the participants' evaluation of the intervention. Recruitment took longer than planned, with a low recruitment rate of 2.0% (42/2020), but a high enrolment rate of 95.2% (40/42). Thirty-one participants (i.e., 77.5%) completed the intervention. Of those who completed the trial, the overall average attendance was reported as 85.2%; 84.7% in the TCTB group and 85.7% in the Tai Chi only group. A total of 58.3% of participants (n = 21) could independently practice the TCTB or Tai Chi exercise motions at the end of the learning stage. There were no missing data except for the nine participants who withdrew during the intervention. No adverse events or effects were reported, and all participants were satisfied with the 12-week exercise intervention. Results support the feasibility of a large-scale randomized controlled trial to explore the efficacy of a TCTB program for improving health in older sedentary office workers.The recent Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (K-DOQI) guidelines suggest an early start of protein restriction, raising issues on willingness to change dietary habits. The aim of this exploratory real-life study was to report on a test of dietary products (protein-free, not previously available in France) in a large, mainly elderly, chronic kidney disease (CKD) population (220 patients, median age 77.5 years, Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) seven, malnutrition inflammation score (MIS) five, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) 26 mL/min), also as a means to tailor further implementation strategies. Forty-nine patients (22.28%) were considered to be poor candidates for the trial (metabolically unstable or with psychological, psychiatric or logistic barriers); of the remaining 171, 80.70% agreed to participate. Patients to whom the diet was not proposed had lower eGFR and higher comorbidity (eGFR 21 vs. 27 p = 0.021; MIS six vs. four p less then 0.001). Patients who refused were 10 years older than those who accepted (83 vs. 73 years p less then 0.001), with a higher CCI (eight vs. seven p = 0.008) and MIS (five vs. four p = 0.01). In the logistic regression, only age was significantly associated with refusal to participate (Odds ratio (OR) 5.408; 95% CI 1.894 to 15.447). No difference was found according to low/intermediate/high frequency of weekly use of protein-free food. Our study suggests that most of the patients are ready to test new diet approaches. Only old age correlated with refusal, but frequency of implementation depended on individual preferences, underlying the importance of tailored approaches to improve adherence.This study examined the relationship between gratitude and subjective well-being (life satisfaction, hope, and positive and negative affect) with individual demographic background (i.e., age, education level, perceived economic status, and religious affiliation) in a sample of 761 Korean adults participated from five universities in South Korea. Specifically, gratitude was still an essential element for the subjective well-being of Korean adults, although the meaning of gratitude under Confucian culture implies indebtedness and obligation. The relationship between gratitude and subjective well-being did not differ by gender. Implications for the subjective well-being of Koreans are discussed.

We identified the activation of the hepatocyte nuclear factor alpha (HNF4A) network in OLP patients and potential pathogens, including Corynebacterium matruchotii, Fusobacterium periodonticum, Streptococcus intermedius, Streptococcus oralis, and Prevotella denticola. Prevotella denticola is capable of activating the HNF4A gene network. Feasibility of the TCTB exercise approach was ascertained through the recruitment and enrolment rate, acceptability of the study intervention by participants including retention and adherence rates, participants' learning process, the appropriateness of data collection as well as the participants' evaluation of the intervention. Recruitment took longer than planned, with a low recruitment rate of 2.0% (42/2020), but a high enrolment rate of 95.2% (40/42). Thirty-one participants (i.e., 77.5%) completed the intervention. Of those who completed the trial, the overall average attendance was reported as 85.2%; 84.7% in the TCTB group and 85.7% in the Tai Chi only group. A total of 58.3% of participants (n = 21) could independently practice the TCTB or Tai Chi exercise motions at the end of the learning stage. There were no missing data except for the nine participants who withdrew during the intervention. No adverse events or effects were reported, and all participants were satisfied with the 12-week exercise intervention. Specifically, gratitude was still an essential element for the subjective well-being of Korean adults, although the meaning of gratitude under Confucian culture implies indebtedness and obligation. In this study, the diagnostic value of BCR combined with EAS-EMG in patients with MSA and PD was further discussed.

    Forty-three patients with MSA, 120 patients with PD and 40 normal controls were recruited, and the BCR and EAS-EMG were evaluated. The average duration, average amplitude, percentage of polyphasic waves, satellite potential, phase pattern and amplitude of strong contraction were observed. The results showed that the abnormal rate of BCR in the control group was 0%, and the abnormal rate of EAS-EMG was 2.5%; these differences were statistically significant compared with the MSA group (BCR 90.9%, EAS-EMG 93.9%). For patients with PD, there were some significant differences in BCR and EAS-EMG between the control group and the PD group.

    Psychological distress is an undersearched cause of poorer health in the Pacific island countries.

    The study aimed to investigate the prevalence and associated factors of psychological distress in a population-based survey among 18-69 year-old persons in Solomon Islands.

    Cross-sectional nationally representative data of 2,533 18-69 year-old persons (38 years were the median age) from the 2015 Solomon Islands STEPS survey were analysed.

    The results indicate that 18.9% of participants had psychological distress (⩾20 scores), 13.4% had mild (20-24 scores), 4.3% moderate (25-29 scores) and 1.1% severe (30-50 scores) psychological distress. In adjusted logistic regression analysis, being divorced, separated, or widowed (AOR 2.76, 95% CI 1.60-4.78), having had a heart attack or stroke (AOR 3.34, 95% CI 2.23-4.99), alcohol dependence (AOR 1.72, 95% CI 1.04-2.84), and sedentary behaviour (AOR 1.90, 95% CI 1.28-2.84), were positively and the consumption of 3-4 servings of fruit and vegetables (AOR 0.62, 95% CI 0.42-0.92), were negatively associated with psychological distress (⩾20 scores). In addition, in a sex stratified adjusted logistic regression analysis among men, current smokeless tobacco use (AOR 4.95, 95% CI 1.66-14.75), was associated with psychological distress.   • The Apis mellifera carnica subspecies of the honeybee has long been praised for its gentleness and good honey yield before systematic breeding efforts began in the early 20th century. However, before the introduction of modern techniques of genetic evaluation (best linear unbiased prediction, BLUP) and a computerized data management in the mid 1990s, genetic progress was slow. Here, the results of the official breeding value estimation in BeeBreed.eu are analyzed to characterize breeding progress and inbreeding. From about the year 2000 onward, the genetic progression accelerated and resulted in a considerable gain in honey yield and desirable properties without increased inbreeding coefficients. The prognostic quality of breeding values is demonstrated by a retrospective analysis. The success of A. m. carnica breeding shows the potential of BLUP-based breeding values and serves as an example for a large-scale breeding program.In Korea, concentrations of particulate matter (PM10) are significantly higher in urban railway tunnels (178.1 μg/m3) than in metropolitan areas (49 μg/m3). In railway tunnels in Korea, it was maintained at 3-4 times higher concentration than general atmosphere and platform. Dust generated by trains is scattered at high speed in these tunnels, making filtration difficult; therefore, the development of filters that can be maintained in tunnels is required. In the present study, we examined PM adsorption in the laboratory scale using activated carbon fiber (ACF), which has high adsorption and capacity. The ACF depth, velocity of flow, and fine PM concentration in the tunnel were the experimental variables. We compared PM concentrations before and after the filter experiments, and calculated removal efficiency to determine the optimal conditions. Comprehensive examination of the experimental variables and differential pressure showed that the optimal conditions for an ACF specimen were a wind speed of 3.0 m/s and the ACF depth of 400 mm. The average removal efficiency of PM10 was 55.5%, and that of PM2.5 was 36.6%. The reproducibility tests showed that the ACF filter could be washed and reused and is suitable for various places because it is easily maintained.Viruses exhibit an elegant simplicity, as they are so basic, but so frightening. There is also weak but significant evidence of a relationship between underweight and being male. The study could help reaching a better understanding of growth status of institutionalized children in Nepal.

Significant evidence of an association between mental and physical disability in institutionalized children and undernutrition (wasting and stunting) was found in this study. There is also weak but significant evidence of a relationship between underweight and being male. The study could help reaching a better understanding of growth status of institutionalized children in Nepal.

There was a lack of transparency on the involvement of industry actors in these events. Embryos generated in vitro secrete extracellular vesicles (EVs) into the culture medium that could be used potentially as indicators of embryo competence. This research aimed to evaluate the concentration and size of EVs and their gDNA content as an indicator of developmental competence in human embryos. Human embryos generated by intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) were classified morphologically as of either TOP, FAIR or POOR quality. Culture medium and developmentally arrested embryos (which were not able to be used for embryo transfer) were collected. Microvesicles, exosomes (MV/Exo) and apoptotic bodies (ABs) were isolated from culture medium. Nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA) and array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) analysis were performed to evaluate EVs and their gDNA content. From NTA, the diameter (mean) of MVs/Exo from TOP quality embryos was higher (112.17 nm) compared with that of FAIR (108.02) and POOR quality embryos (102.78 nm) (P less then 0.05). aCGH analysis indicated that MVs/Exo and ABs carried gDNA with the presence of 23 chromosome pairs. However, when arrested embryos were compared with their respective MVs/Exo and ABs, the latter had an increased rate of chromosomal abnormalities (24.9%) compared with embryos (8.7%) (P less then 0.05). In conclusion, the size of EVs from culture medium might be an alternative for evaluating competence of human embryos, however more studies are needed to validate the use of gDNA from EVs as an indicator of embryo competence.

  • Warfarin requires strict monitoring by measuring prothrombin time (PT), international normalized ratio (INR), and time in therapeutic range (TTR). Several factors can lead to poor PT/INR control including vitamin K status, medication adherence, knowledge, and quality of life. The present study aims to assess patient adherence to warfarin treatment and its correlation with INR control.

    A cross-sectional study was conducted between October 2017 and January 2018 at Tripoli University Hospital. Data were collected by structured questionnaires which included; demographic and clinical characteristics, the Oral Anticoagulation Knowledge (OAK) test, and the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8).

    The final analysis included 88 out of 140 patients (73.33%). There were significant differences in age range, gender, marital status, and education level between the 2 groups (poor knowledge and adequate knowledge) (p < 0.05). There was a significant positive correlation between OAK test score and TTR. Overall, 76.2% of patients were adherent to warfarin (MMAS score ≥6) and 20.45% of patients were of high adherence (MMAS score of 8). The median score was 6 (IQR 6-7). A statistically significant, strong positive correlation between adherence to medication and TTR as an indicator of INR control was found (rs[86] = 0.472, p < 0.0001).

    The study addressed and identified several areas for future improvement of patient outcomes. The implementation of new approaches to enhance patient knowledge and adherence is warranted, and measures to provide treatment for all patients that require it are needed, to improve outcomes and decrease adverse drug effects.

A skin biopsy in the patient revealed the presence of a metacentric sSMC in 100% of cells. Cytogenetic and FISH studies showed that it was a de novo metacentric bisatellited sSMC derived from chromosomes 14 or 22. This study evaluated the levels of biomarkers related to osmoregulation, immune system activation, and tubular injury in ADPKD patients with impaired or preserved renal function.

    This study included 26 ADPKD patients with modestly impaired renal function (estimated glomerular filtration rate [eGFR] 45-70 mL/min/1.73 m2; Group A), 26 age- and sex-matched ADPKD patients with relatively preserved renal function (eGFR >70 mL/min/1.73 m2; Group B), and 26 age- and sex-matched controls (Group C). Serum levels of copeptin, the inflammasome nucleotide-binding and oligomerization domain-like receptors pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3), and soluble urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) were measured with ELISA techniques.

We have previously demonstrated that HPV16 E7-mediated epithelial hyperplasia suppresses T helper type 1 responses to intradermally delivered antigen and directs differentiation of CD4+ T cells towards a Foxp3+ regulatory phenotype (Treg). Here we establish that Foxp3+ Treg expansion from a transferred naive T-cell population is driven directly by the hyperplastic skin and is independent of pre-existing immune-modulated lymphocytes. However, depletion of endogenous CD25+ Tregs before priming of adoptively transferred T cells significantly improves antigen-specific CD8+ T-cell responses but not T helper type 1 responses. Deletion of IL-10 had no effect on Treg expansion, epidermal dendritic cell alteration, and suppression of induced T helper type 1 immunity in HPV16 E7-driven hyperplastic ****. Here, we thoroughly compare the impact of different digitonin concentrations on the liquid dispersions' physical properties and correlate with the respiratory complexes' migration pattern and supercomplexes. Our results demonstrate that digitonin concentration generates liquid dispersions with specific size and variability critical to distinguish between a real association of complexes from being trapped in the same micelle.Motivated by historical and present clinical observations, we discuss the possible unfavorable evolution of the immunity (similar to documented antibody-dependent enhancement scenarios) after a first infection with COVID-19. More precisely we ask the question of how the epidemic outcomes are affected if the initial infection does not provide immunity but rather sensitization to future challenges. We first provide background comparison with the 2003 SARS epidemic. Then we use a compartmental epidemic model structured by immunity level that we fit to available data; using several scenarios of the fragilization dynamics, we derive quantitative insights into the additional expected numbers of severe cases and deaths.Exposure to inorganic arsenic (iAs) is a significant public health concern with individuals around the globe exposed to harmful levels through contaminated drinking water. Exposure to iAs during pregnancy is of particular concern and has been associated with pregnancy complications and adverse child health later in life. Effects of in utero exposure may be mediated through alterations in key signaling pathways in the placenta that regulate fetal growth and development. A pathway of interest is the glucocorticoid receptor (GR)- signaling pathway, which is known to regulate fetal and placental development. While prior research has shown that iAs alters GR-associated gene expression in trophoblasts, the mechanisms that underlie these perturbations remain unknown. In the present study, we set out to elucidate the molecular mechanisms that underpin observed alterations in GR-associated gene expression. We also aimed to determine whether the methylated metabolites of iAs, namely monomethyl‑arsenic (MMA) and dimethyl‑arsenic (DMA), also influence GR-associated signaling in the placenta.
    After 30 days, all birds were euthanized. In experiment 2 and 3 immediately after euthanization birds, blood samples were collected, serum was used for hormone assay. mRNA levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone-β (Tshβ), type 2 deiodinase (Dio2), type 3 deiodinase (Dio3), gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and gonadotropin inhibitory hormone (GnIH) were measured in hypothalamic tissue. Results from experiment 1 show that high temperature attenuates the testicular responses and accelerates the timing of regression. Experiment 2 shows that on day 30, testicular responses are similar, but reproductive genes express differentially in two groups. Experiment 3 shows that exposure to high temperatures during the photosensitive stage affects the testicular response at the poststimulatory state. Here, we investigated if surgical menopause exacerbated visual dysfunction in a model of direct retinal ganglion cell (RGC) damage via optic nerve crush (ONC). Female Long Evans rats (n = 12) underwent ovariectomy (OVX) to induce surgical menopause or Sham surgery. Eight weeks post-surgery, baseline visual function was assessed via optomotor response. Afterwards, rats underwent monocular ONC.
