Pea plants were labelled every 14 days with a 13C glucose and 15N urea solution, using the cotton wick technique. Direct root contact resulted in the highest pea rhizodeposition and thus the largest absolute amounts of N and C transfer to triticale. Root exclusion generally changed composition of rhizodeposits from fine root residues towards root exudates. Pea plant-N consisted of 17% N derived from rhizodeposition (NdfR) in treatment ADR but only 8% in the treatments AD and A, independently of pea variety, whereas pea plant-C consisted of 13% C derived from rhizodeposition (CdfR), without pea variety and transfer path treatment effects. Averaging all transfer path treatments, 6.7% of NdfR and 2.7% of CdfR was transferred from Frisson and P2 to triticale plants. Here we find that it belongs to a larger cluster incorporating 39 viruses collected in 7 countries from 3 continents, 22 of them in Spain, most from Bolivian or Peruvian individuals, and 12 in South America (Bolivia, Argentina, and Peru). This BF cluster comprises three major subclusters, two associated with Bolivian and one with Peruvian individuals. Near full-length genome sequence analyses of nine viruses, collected in Spain, Bolivia, and Peru, revealed coincident BF mosaic structures, with 13 breakpoints, 6 and 7 of which coincided with CRF12_BF and CRF17_BF, respectively. In a phylogenetic tree, they grouped in a clade closely related to these CRFs, and more distantly to CRF38_BF and CRF44_BF, all circulating in South America. These results allowed to identify a new HIV-1 CRF, designated CRF89_BF. Through phylodynamic analyses, CRF89_BF emergence was estimated in Bolivia around 1986. We retrospectively analyzed 18F-FDG PET/CT image data from 32 patients with histopathologically proven NSCLC who were scheduled to undergo CIRT and 31 patients diagnosed with RP after CIRT. The SUV parameters, metabolic tumor volume (MTV), total lesion glycolysis (TLG) as well as fifty-six texture parameters derived from seven matrices were determined using PETSTAT image-analysis software. Data were statistically compared between NSCLC and RP using Wilcoxon rank-sum tests. Diagnostic accuracy was assessed using receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves. Several texture parameters significantly differed between NSCLC and RP (p less then 0.05). The parameters that were high in areas under the ROC curves (AUC) were as follows SUVmax, 0.64; GLRLM run percentage, 0.83 and NGTDM coarseness, 0.82. Diagnostic accuracy was improved using GLRLM run percentage or NGTDM coarseness compared with SUVmax (p less then 0.01). The texture parameters of 18F-FDG uptake yielded excellent outcomes for differentiating NSCLC from radiation pneumonitis after CIRT, which outperformed SUV-based evaluation. In particular, GLRLM run percentage and NGTDM coarseness of 18F-FDG PET/CT images would be appropriate parameters that can offer high diagnostic accuracy.

The development of in vitro neural tissue analogs is of great interest for many biomedical engineering applications, including the tissue engineering of neural interfaces, treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, and in vitro evaluation of cell-material interactions. Since astrocytes play a crucial role in the regenerative processes of the central nervous system, the development of biomaterials that interact favorably with astrocytes is of great research interest. The sources of human astrocytes, suitable natural biomaterials, guidance scaffolds, and ligand patterned surfaces are discussed in the article. New findings in this field are essential for the future treatment of spinal cord and brain injuries.Background Limited research has been done to measure ambulatory respiratory behavior, in particular those associated with tobacco use, in the natural environment due to a lack of monitoring techniques. Respiratory topography parameters provide useful information for modeling particle deposition in the lung and assessing exposure risk and health effects associated with tobacco use. Commercially available Wearable Respiratory Monitors (WRM), such as the Hexoskin Smart Garment, have embedded sensors that measure chest motion and may be adapted for measuring ambulatory lung volume. Methods Self-reported "everyday" and "some days" Hookah and Cigarette smokers were recruited for a 3-day natural environment observation study. Participants wore the Hexoskin shirt while using their preferred tobacco product. The shirt was calibrated on them prior to, during, and after the observation period. A novel method for calculating the calibration parameters is presented. Results NH = 5 Hookah and NC = 3 Cigarette participants were enrolled. Calibration parameters were obtained and applied to the observed chest motion waveform from each participant to obtain their lung volume waveform. Respiratory topography parameters were derived from the lung volume waveform. Conclusion The feasibility of using the Hexoskin for measuring ambulatory respiratory topography parameters in the natural environment is demonstrated.Palliative radiotherapy has a great role in the treatment of large tumor masses. However, treating a bulky disease could be difficult, especially in critical anatomical areas. In daily clinical practice, short course hypofractionated radiotherapy is delivered in order to control the symptomatic disease. Radiation fields generally encompass the entire tumor mass, which is homogeneously irradiated. Recent technological advances enable delivering a higher radiation dose in small areas within a large mass. This goal, previously achieved thanks to the GRID approach, is now achievable using the newest concept of LATTICE radiotherapy (LT-RT). This kind of treatment allows exploiting various radiation effects, such as bystander and abscopal effects. These events may be enhanced by the concomitant use of immunotherapy, with the latter being ever more successfully delivered in cancer patients. Moreover, a critical issue in the treatment of large masses is the inhomogeneous intratumoral distribution of well-oxygenated and hypo-oxygenated areas. It is well known that hypoxic areas are more resistant to the killing effect of radiation, hence the need to target them with higher aggressive doses. This concept introduces the "oxygen-guided radiation therapy" (OGRT), which means looking for suitable hypoxic markers to implement in PET/CT and Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Future treatment strategies are likely to involve combinations of LT-RT, OGRT, and immunotherapy. In this paper, we review the radiobiological rationale behind a potential benefit of LT-RT and OGRT, and we summarize the results reported in the few clinical trials published so far regarding these issues. Lastly, we suggest what future perspectives may emerge by combining immunotherapy with LT-RT/OGRT.Rural US Latina breast cancer patients experience language barriers, health literacy issues, and limited access to health care resources that negatively impact survivorship care. This study explored the challenges to survivorship care for rural Latina breast cancer (**) patients and approaches to supporting survivorship care plans (SCP) from the stakeholders' perspectives. Data were collected via eight focus groups (n = 40) and individual interviews (n = 4) with Latina ** patients, family caregivers, and health care professionals in a rural US-Mexico Border region. Interviews were audio-taped, transcribed, translated, and analyzed using thematic analysis. Themes related to the patient's SCP challenges included (1) lack of knowledge of treatment information, (2) lack of proactive health behavior, (3) gaps in information for care coordination, (4) psychological distress, and (5) difficulty retaining health information. Respondents expressed that the SCP document could fill patient information gaps as well as support patient communication with their clinicians and family. Rural ** patients demonstrated an acute need for information and active engagement in their survivorship care. The findings indicate the importance of addressing challenges for survivorship care on multiple dimensions Cognitive, behavioral, social, and structural. Developing a culturally tailored SCP intervention will be imperative to support survivorship care.Recurrent urinary tract infection (rUTI) remains a major problem for many women and therefore the pursuit for genomic and phenotypic traits which could define rUTI has been ongoing. The present study applied a genomic approach to investigate recurrent urinary tract infections by comparative analyses of recurrent and non-recurrent Escherichia coli isolates from general practice. From whole-genome sequencing data, phylogenetic clustering and genomic traits were studied on a collection of isolates which caused recurrent infection compared to non-recurrent isolates. In addition, genomic variation between the 1st and following infection was studied on a subset of the isolates. Evidence of limited adaptation between the recurrent infections based on single nucleotide polymorphism analyses with a range of 0-13 non-synonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) between the paired isolates. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/ms-275.html This included an overrepresentation of SNPs in metabolism genes. Attentional biomarkers in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are difficult to detect using only behavioural testing. We explored whether attention measured by a low-cost EEG system might be helpful to detect a possible disorder at its earliest stages. The GokEvolution application was designed to train attention and to provide a measure to identify attentional problems in children early on. Attention changes registered with NeuroSky MindWave in combination with the CARAS-R psychological test were used to characterise the attentional profiles of 52 non-ADHD and 23 ADHD children aged 7 to 12 years old. The analyses revealed that the GokEvolution was valuable in measuring attention through its use of EEG-BCI technology. The ADHD group showed lower levels of attention and more variability in brain attentional responses when compared to the control group. The application was able to map the low attention profiles of the ADHD group when compared to the control group and could distinguish between participants who completed the task and those who did not. Therefore, this system could potentially be used in clinical settings as a screening tool for early detection of attentional traits in order to prevent their development.Poor efficiency of chemotherapeutics in the eradication of Cancer Stem Cells (CSCs) has been driving the search for more active and specific compounds. In this work, we show how cell density-dependent stage culture profiles can be used in drug development workflows to achieve more robust drug activity (IC50 and EC50) results. Using flow cytometry and light microscopy, we characterized the cytological stage profiles of the HL-60-, A-549-, and HEK-293-derived sublines with a focus on their primitive cell content. We then used a range of cytotoxic substances-C-123, bortezomib, idarubicin, C-1305, doxorubicin, DMSO, and ethanol-to highlight typical density-related issues accompanying drug activity determination. We also showed that drug EC50 and selectivity indices normalized to primitive cell content are more accurate activity measurements. In this article, we used a green and simple method to coat the surface of UiO-66-NH2 with polydopamine (PDA), PDA can promote the catalytic hydrolysis of UiO-66-NH2 to DMNP (a simulant of chemical warfare agents). Additionally, it can adsorb the toxic hydrolysis product p-nitrophenol, avoiding the trouble of secondary treatment. The half-life of UiO-66-NH2 coated with polydopamine (UiO-66-NH2@PDA) for catalytic hydrolysis is 8.9 min, and that of pure UiO-66-NH2 is 20 min. In the scope of this paper, we have explored CNT/graphene/silicone composites with a different morphology, analyzed the synergistic effect of hybrid fillers on various properties of silicone composites, and observed the existing approaches for the fabrication of hybrid composites with a seamless, assembled, and/or foamed structure. In conclusion, current challenges and future prospects for silicone composites based on CNTs and graphene have been thoroughly discussed.
Attentional biomarkers in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are difficult to detect using only behavioural testing. We explored whether attention measured by a low-cost EEG system might be helpful to detect a possible disorder at its earliest stages. The GokEvolution application was designed to train attention and to provide a measure to identify attentional problems in children early on. Attention changes registered with NeuroSky MindWave in combination with the CARAS-R psychological test were used to characterise the attentional profiles of 52 non-ADHD and 23 ADHD children aged 7 to 12 years old. The analyses revealed that the GokEvolution was valuable in measuring attention through its use of EEG-BCI technology. The ADHD group showed lower levels of attention and more variability in brain attentional responses when compared to the control group. The application was able to map the low attention profiles of the ADHD group when compared to the control group and could distinguish between participants who completed the task and those who did not. Therefore, this system could potentially be used in clinical settings as a screening tool for early detection of attentional traits in order to prevent their development.Poor efficiency of chemotherapeutics in the eradication of Cancer Stem Cells (CSCs) has been driving the search for more active and specific compounds. We then used a range of cytotoxic substances-C-123, bortezomib, idarubicin, C-1305, doxorubicin, DMSO, and ethanol-to highlight typical density-related issues accompanying drug activity determination. Mechanical circulatory support systems (MCSSs) are crucial devices for transplants in patients with heart failure. The blood flowing through the MCSS can be recirculated or even stagnated in the event of critical blood flow issues. To avoid emergencies due to abnormal changes in the flow, continuous changes of the flowrate should be measured with high accuracy and robustness. For better flowrate measurements, a more advanced ultrasonic blood flowmeter (UFM), which is a noninvasive measurement tool, is needed. In this paper, we propose a novel UFM sensor module using a novel algorithm (Xero) that can exploit the advantages of both conventional cross-correlation (Xcorr) and zero-crossing (Zero) algorithms, using only the zero-crossing-based algorithm. To ensure the capability of our own developed and optimized ultrasonic sensor module for MCSSs, the accuracy, robustness, and continuous monitoring performance of the proposed algorithm were compared to those of conventional algorithms after application to the developed sensor module. The results show that Xero is superior to other algorithms for flowrate measurements under different environments and offers an error rate of at least 0.92%, higher robustness for changing fluid temperatures than conventional algorithms, and sensitive responses to sudden changes in flowrates. Thus, the proposed UFM system with Xero has a great potential for flowrate measurements in MCSSs.
Measurement of HIV-1 viral load (VL) is essential for monitoring antiretroviral treatment (ART) efficacy. In remote settings, dried blood spots (DBS) may be used as the specimen type. However, cellular components in DBS not present in the gold standard specimen type, plasma, may result in low specificity i.e., over-estimation of VL results from DBS compared to plasma. The Abbott RealTime HIV-1 assay system has been reported to have improved specificity using DBS compared to other tests. A new specimen collection matrix, the cobas plasma separation card (PSC, Roche Molecular Systems), enables specimen collection from a finger ***** or venous blood, using a multi-layer absorption and filtration design that results in a specimen similar to plasma.

The γ-Fe2O3/CeO2 particle surface was functionalized with PEG-neridronate to improve the colloidal stability in PBS and biocompatibility. Chemical and in vitro biological assays proved that the nanoparticles, due to the presence of cerium oxide, effectively scavenged radicals, thus decreasing oxidative stress in the model cell line. PEG functionalization of the nanoparticles diminished their in vitro aggregation and facilitated lysosomal cargo degradation in cancer cells during autophagy, which resulted in concentration-dependent cytotoxicity of the nanoparticles. Following the systematic examinations of these NAs on their antibacterial performance and the toxicity against the normal mammalian cells, we found that significant bactericidal effect with negligible cytotoxicity could be achieved with the NAs bearing 40 % of Au and 60 % Ag. Furthermore, Au-Ag NAs displayed a lower cytotoxicity than their corresponding monometallic NP mixtures due to the decreased Ag+ release from alloying structures of Au-Ag. Spiritual care (SC) is central to palliative care. However, a mismatch between patients' desire for SC and physicians' SC provision remains. The shortage of specialty-trained palliative physicians, necessitates that all physicians provide primary palliative care, including SC. Although several quantitative studies explore physicians' barriers to SC, few qualitative studies and no longitudinal studies exist.
To gain in-depth understanding of factors influencing physicians' ability to provide SC over time.
A 20-year longitudinal, individual interview study. In study year-1, we interviewed all residents in a USA primary care residency (full study-group) regarding SC beliefs, experiences and skills. The longitudinal study-group (PGY1 subgroup) was interviewed again in study-years 3, 11, and 20. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed. Four researchers analyzed transcripts using a grounded theory approach. IRB approval was obtained.

Physicians had diversual and systems level interventions fostering motivation, SC skill development, and supportive work environments.In addition to its metabolic and endocrine effects, growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) was found to modulate feeding behavior in mammals. However, the role of recently synthetized GHRH antagonist MIA-690 and MR-409, a GHRH agonist, on feeding regulation remains to be evaluated. We investigated the effects of chronic subcutaneous administration of MIA-690 and MR-409 on feeding behavior and energy metabolism, in ****. Compared to vehicle, MIA-690 increased food intake and body weight, while MR-409 had no effect. Both analogs did not modify locomotor activity, as well as subcutaneous, visceral and brown adipose tissue (BAT) mass. A significant increase of hypothalamic agouti-related peptide (AgRP) gene expression and norepinephrine (NE) levels, along with a reduction of serotonin (5-HT) levels were found after MIA-690 treatment. MIA-690 was also found able to decrease gene expression of leptin in visceral adipose tissue. By contrast, MR-409 had no effect on the investigated markers. Specifically, a spatial transformation (ST) module is designed and integrated into the reconstruction network to align the pre-acquired reference images with the images to be reconstructed. The misalignment is further alleviated by maximizing the normalized cross-correlation (NCC) between the ** images. The visualization of feature maps demonstrates that the proposed method effectively reduces the misalignment between the images for shareable information extraction when applied to the publicly available brain datasets. In study year-1, we interviewed all residents in a USA primary care residency (full study-group) regarding SC beliefs, experiences and skills. We investigated the effects of chronic subcutaneous administration of MIA-690 and MR-409 on feeding behavior and energy metabolism, in mice. Compared to vehicle, MIA-690 increased food intake and body weight, while MR-409 had no effect. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end deep neural network to reconstruct highly accelerated images by exploiting the shareable information from potentially misaligned reference images of an arbitrary contrast. Specifically, a spatial transformation (ST) module is designed and integrated into the reconstruction network to align the pre-acquired reference images with the images to be reconstructed. The misalignment is further alleviated by maximizing the normalized cross-correlation (NCC) between the MC images. The visualization of feature maps demonstrates that the proposed method effectively reduces the misalignment between the images for shareable information extraction when applied to the publicly available brain datasets. Cisplatin is a chemotherapeutic agent whose therapeutic use is greatly limited by the associated organs' toxicity and particularly, testicular toxicity. Cisplatin-induced testicular damage reported being mediated through mitochondria-mediated apoptosis, inflammation, and oxidative stress. Evidence showed that tranilast (TRN) has the ability to restore the oxidative status and modulate TRAIL/caspase-8 signaling. This led us to hypothesize that TRN could abrogate cisplatin-induced testicular and epididymal injuries via inhibiting oxidative stress and modulating proliferation and TRAIL/caspase-8/cJNK signaling. Cisplatin injection induced oligospermia and abnormalities in testicular and epididymal structure along with impaired oxidative status. TRN administration (100 or 300 mg/kg) for 7 days post-cisplatin injection preserved spermatogenesis and restored testicular and epididymal architecture, but restoration was more so in TRN300 than TRN100. This was in line with the restoration of balanced oxidative status as indicated by the increased total antioxidant capacity, glutathione and superoxide dismutase activity, and the decreased malondialdehyde content in testes (p less then 0.05 vs. cisplatin). TRN increased the cell proliferation revealed by the increased expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen in a dose-dependent manner (p less then 0.05 vs. cisplatin) whereas only TRN300 decreased testicular cJNK, TRAIL, and caspase-8 expression (p less then 0.05 vs. cisplatin). The experimental evidences herein presented demonstrate that DANS efficiently absorbs into a variety of polymers constituting microplastics, and its solvatochromic properties lead to a positive shift of the fluorescence emission spectrum according to the polarity of the polymers. Therefore, under UV illumination, microplastics glow a specific emission spectrum from blue to red that allows for a straightforward polymer identification. In addition, we show that DANS staining gives access to different detection and analysis strategies based on fluorescence microscopy, from simple epifluorescence fragments visualization, to confocal microscopy and phasor approach for plastic components quantification.
There is limited evidence of the relationship between peripheral blood eosinophils and clinical remission of acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) at different ages, especially in elderly patients, which was the objective of the present study.
This retrospective study stratified patients by age (elderly patients >65years old or middle-aged patients between 45 and 65years old) and analysed the relationship between blood eosinophils (≥2% or <2%) and AECOPD clinical remission at observing time points of 7, 14, 21 and 28days of hospitalisation. Student's t tests, Mann-Whitney U tests, Chi-squared or Fisher's exact tests were conditionally used to compare difference between groups. The unadjusted or adjusted Cox proportional hazards model was used to analyse the association between blood eosinophilic levels and cumulative clinical remission.
Of 703 AECOPD cases analysed, 616 were elderly people (>65years), 312 of whom had eosinophilic exacerbations. There were statistPD.
Eosinophilic exacerbation was associated with better early clinical remission of AECOPD patients during hospitalisation. We aimed to investigate whether the risk of diabetes mellitus (DM) is heightened in patients with prostate cancer receiving injection therapy.
Men diagnosed with prostate cancer between 2000 and 2012 were included in the case cohort, and men without prostate cancer were included as controls. Each patient with prostate cancer was matched with a control patient with the same index year, demographic variables and comorbidities, and comparisons were made using propensity score matching. The hazard ratio of DM was estimated using the Cox proportional hazards model.
This cohort study consisted of 1213 patients with prostate cancer and 1213 control patients. The risk of DM in patients with prostate cancer was 1.60 times (95% CI = 1.12, 2.27) that of patients without prostate cancer. Compared with the controls, the hazard ratios of DM for patients with prostate cancer not receiving oral hormone therapy, patients with prostate cancer receiving oral hormone therapy, and patients with prostate cancer not receiving injection hormone therapy were 1.65 (95% CI = 1.01, 2.70), 1.57 (95% CI = 1.07, 2.70), and 1.94 (95% CI = 1.34, 2.81), respectively. The risk of DM in patients who received injection hormone therapy was 0.45 times (95% CI = 0.25, 0.82) that of patients who did not receive injection hormone therapy.

As the cultural diversity among patients increases, it becomes important for nurses to be prepared and efficient in providing culturally congruent care. The purpose of this study is to examine the factors influencing transcultural self-efficacy (TSE) among Korean nurses.
A descriptive cross-sectional survey was used, and 131 nurses with foreign patient-care experience were recruited from a university tertiary hospital.
The mean TSE score of participants was 5.27 out of 10 (
= 1.50). The practical subscale of TSE was the lowest, while the affective subscale was the highest. A regression analysis revealed that education level, cultural competence, and intergroup anxiety are predictors explaining 58.8% of its variance (

Overall, 99.4% of the participants knew at least one of eight STIs, but only 25.2% got tested in the last six months. Participants more focused on prevention had condomless sex less frequently, whereas participants more focused on promotion knew more STIs and got tested for more STIs. Furthermore, participants had stronger intentions to get tested for STIs if they got tested for more STIs in the past, were more concerned about STIs, perceived greater susceptibility to STI acquisition, and were more focused on promotion (but not prevention). Participants had greater behavioral control over condom use if they had condomless sex less often and were more focused on prevention (but not promotion). These findings suggest that promotion-focused people are more likely to consider the consequences of having condomless sex. Developing comprehensive SCD programs in sub-Saharan African countries requires knowledge of the cultural factors affecting health-seeking behavior. We utilized an ethnographic approach and the frameworks of Dutta and Habermas to explore cultural factors influencing SCD management in rural Sierra Leone. A purposive sample of 27 individuals with SCD and their family and professional caregivers were observed and interviewed from March 2019 to April 2019. We identified four domains (Cultural Beliefs, Cultural Values, Cultural Practices, and Dealing with SCD) of cultural influences on SCD management, and 12 sub-themes (related to collectivism; spiritual, traditional, and Western beliefs and practices; and lived experiences) that reflect the personal, social, structural, and contextual complexities of SCD management. Further research regarding roles of traditional and spiritual leaders, combinations of Western and traditional practices, and culturally centered interventions is warranted.

To examine the relationship between HRQL and demographic factors, impairment-based measures, and lesion characteristics in chronic aphasia.
A total of 41 left-hemisphere stroke survivors with aphasia underwent cognitive testing and magnetic resonance imaging. To address relationships with demographic and impairment-based measures, test scores were entered into a principal component analysis (PCA) and multiple linear regression was performed for overall and domain (physical, communication, psychosocial) scores of the Stroke and Aphasia Quality of Life Scale (SAQOL-39g). Independent variables included factor scores from the PCA, motricity, lesion volume, depressed mood, and demographic variables. To address relationships with lesion location, multivariate support vector regression lesion-symptom mapping (SVR-LSM) was used to locairment-based measures. This information may help identify individuals at risk for specific aspects of low HRQL and facilitate targeted interventions to improve well-being.Background Tp-e interval, Tp-e/QT ratio and Tp-e/QTc ratio are electrocardiographic markers and indices of ventricular arrhythmogenic events. We aimed to investigate ventricular repolarization in normal weight, overweight, obese and morbidly obese individuals by using ECG parameters including the above markers.Methods A total of 310 obese patients with various cardiac complaints, who were admitted to our outpatient clinic between May 2020 and January 2021, were prospectively included in the study. Using the World Health Organization (WHO) body mass index (BMI) classification, patients were divided into four groups normal weight (18.5-24.9 kg/m2, n = 48), overweight (25-29.9 kg/m2, n = 98), obese (30-39.9 kg/m2, n = 119), and morbidly obese (>40 kg/m2, n = 45).Results The morbidly obese and normal groups were younger in age than the other two groups. The Tp-e interval values for Groups I-IV were 72.1 ± 6.9, 73.1 ± 6.2, 75.7 ± 7.3 and 81.1 ± 6.9, respectively, and significantly different (P less then .001). We found that age, BMI, systolic blood pressure (BP) and diastolic BP were independent predictors of a prolonged Tp-e interval.Conclusions The principal finding of our study was the gradual increase in Tp-e interval, Tp-e/QT ratio and Tp-e/QTc ratio starting from the overweight stage and these parameters gradually increase in obese and morbidly obese patients. In contrast, prevention-focused people are more likely to take control of their sexual health.Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a chronic genetic disease that causes life-threatening complications and requires robust comprehensive management. Developing comprehensive SCD programs in sub-Saharan African countries requires knowledge of the cultural factors affecting health-seeking behavior. We utilized an ethnographic approach and the frameworks of Dutta and Habermas to explore cultural factors influencing SCD management in rural Sierra Leone. A purposive sample of 27 individuals with SCD and their family and professional caregivers were observed and interviewed from March 2019 to April 2019. We identified four domains (Cultural Beliefs, Cultural Values, Cultural Practices, and Dealing with SCD) of cultural influences on SCD management, and 12 sub-themes (related to collectivism; spiritual, traditional, and Western beliefs and practices; and lived experiences) that reflect the personal, social, structural, and contextual complexities of SCD management. Further research regarding roles of traditional and spiritual leaders, combinations of Western and traditional practices, and culturally centered interventions is warranted. Health-related quality of life (HRQL) in stroke survivors is related to numerous factors, but more research is needed to delineate factors related to HRQL in people with aphasia. To examine the relationship between HRQL and demographic factors, impairment-based measures, and lesion characteristics in chronic aphasia. A total of 41 left-hemisphere stroke survivors with aphasia underwent cognitive testing and magnetic resonance imaging. To address relationships with demographic and impairment-based measures, test scores were entered into a principal component analysis (PCA) and multiple linear regression was performed for overall and domain (physical, communication, psychosocial) scores of the Stroke and Aphasia Quality of Life Scale (SAQOL-39g). Independent variables included factor scores from the PCA, motricity, lesion volume, depressed mood, and demographic variables. To address relationships with lesion location, multivariate support vector regression lesion-symptom mapping (SVR-LSM) was used to locairment-based measures. While the efficacy of disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) for patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) is established, little is known about their long-term safety. Cancer-risk after DMT use remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether the prescription of DMTs for patients with MS increases the risk of reporting cancer.
Data from the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System were extracted from 2004 to 2020. After data cleaning, the crude and adjusted reported odds ratios (cROR and aROR) for cancer were calculated for DMTs with Interferon beta-1a as the reference drug. Sensitivity analyses investigated the group of reports with multiple registered DMTs, the effect of indication restriction and the results when using the rest of the DMTs as reference.
For malignant tumours, aROR (95% confidence interval [CI]) values were Cladribine 0.46 (0.18-0.95), Dimethyl fumarate 0.30 (0.27-0.34), Fingolimod 0.61 (0.53-0.70), Glatiramer 0.50 (0.43-0.58), Alemtuzumab 0.84 (0.64-1.08), Interferon beta-1b 0.49 (0.42-0.56), Natalizumab 0.36 (0.34-0.39), Ocrelizumab 0.48 (0.29-0.74), Peginterferon beta-1a 0.35 (0.26-0.48), Siponimod 0.89 (0.47-1.54) and Teriflunomide 0.25(0.21-0.30) adjusted to age, gender and concomitant medications. Based on historical observations that distal radial muscles from some chromatophores appear to extend closely to muscles from other chromatophores, we asked whether radial muscles actually make specialized contacts. Using 3D electron microscopy of Doryteuthis pealeii mantle skin, we discovered tight putatively functional muscle-to-muscle contacts between radial muscles from different chromatophores, including elaborate sets of axonal processes located adjacent to those myo-myo junctions. These detailed ultrastructural findings demonstrate auxiliary anatomical routes for radial muscle activation and suggest plausible mechanisms whereby local physical synchronization and axo-axonic processing in the periphery can contribute to chromatophore pattern dynamics such as "passing cloud."
In 2002, a suicide prevention program for visitors was implemented in Cheung Chau, an offshore island with 21,000 residents and many visitors. This research revisited the intervention and evaluated its long-term effectiveness. Insights are provided into implementing a sustainable intervention.
Suicide death records (2007-2017) of Cheung Chau residents and visitors were retrieved. Information related to suicide method and sociodemographic characteristics of people who died by suicide were explored. Bivariate analyses were conducted to examine differences between visitors and residents; visitors and residents who died in Cheung Chau; and residents who died in or outside Cheung Chau.

To evaluate the risk factors / predictors of tooth loss in patients with periodontitis who underwent periodontal therapy and long-term periodontal maintenance (PM).
PubMed, CENTRAL, EMBASE, Web of Science, LILACS and Scholar were searched up to and including September 2020. Studies limited to periodontitis patients who underwent active periodontal therapy (APT) and followed a regular PM programme with 5years follow-up minimum were eligible for inclusion in this review. Studies were included if they reported data on tooth loss during PM. Random effects meta-analyses of number of tooth loss per patient per year were conducted.
Thirty-six papers regarding thirty-three studies were included in this review, with three prospective 30 retrospective trials. Subgroup meta-analysis showed no differences between prospective and retrospective studies, with an average of 0.1 tooth loss per year per patient (p<0.001). Maxillary and molar teeth were more susceptible to be extracted during long-term PM. Baseline characteristics (smoking, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, being male and teeth with furcation lesions) showed no significance as predictor of tooth loss through meta-regression.

PubMed, CENTRAL, EMBASE, Web of Science, LILACS and Scholar were searched up to and including September 2020. Studies limited to periodontitis patients who underwent active periodontal therapy (APT) and followed a regular PM programme with 5years follow-up minimum were eligible for inclusion in this review. Studies were included if they reported data on tooth loss during PM. Random effects meta-analyses of number of tooth loss per patient per year were conducted. Thirty-six papers regarding thirty-three studies were included in this review, with three prospective 30 retrospective trials. Subgroup meta-analysis showed no differences between prospective and retrospective studies, with an average of 0.1 tooth loss per year per patient (p<0.001). Maxillary and molar teeth were more susceptible to be extracted during long-term PM. Women's self-help groups (SHGs) are actively promoted to advance women's empowerment. SHGs are estimated to cover 112 million households in 2017; more than 90% are women. This article answers if membership in women's group is associated with better health and women's empowerment.
Data on district level health and empowerment indicators were obtained from the fourth round of the National Family Health Survey 2015-16. Data on SHG activity, defined as concentration of SHG at district, was obtained from publicly available data. Twelve indicators were clubbed to measure four domains maternal health, women's empowerment, child health, and health protection. Binary logistic regressions were computed with education and wealth as control in each model to analyze the change in 12 indicators with the presence of SHG.
Districts with higher concentration of SHG members were associated with higher odds of women delivering their babies in an institution (OR 1.53), taking iron pills, sprinklers, or syrup (OR 1.11), using family planning methods (OR 1.03), having knowledge of ovulatory cycle (OR 1.10), owning house or land (either alone or jointly) (OR 1.18) and lower odds of women suffering from anemia (OR 0.92). The odds improve when districts with higher concentration of SHG members were compared with those with lower concentration.

Multimorbidity (MM) is a global concern following the increase in life expectancy, the conquering of major infectious diseases, and the advances in the management of chronic illnesses. It places a substantial burden on patients and healthcare systems.
This study aims to describe the prevalence and pattern of MM in adults among primary healthcare users in Qatar.
A retrospective cross-sectional study design.
Data were extracted from the electronic health records of patients aged 18 years and above who registered for care with 27 primary health centres in Qatar from 1
January 2017 to 30
June 2020. The distribution of MM among age groups, gender and nationality was analysed.
In the study population of 7,96,427, the prevalence of MM was found to be 22.1%. MM was more prevalent in females (51.2%) than males (48.8%). The prevalence of MM showed an increasing trend with increasing age, with a peak of 25.8% found in the 46-55 age group. Qatari nationals accounted for 32.7% of MM, Southeast Asians for 28.3%, North Africans for 16.7% and individuals from other Middle Eastern countries for 14.1%. The five most common long-term chronic conditions were type-2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, obesity and eczema, with the first three being the most prevalent disease clusters.
Our findings confirm that MM is common in Qatar's primary care centres. While the prevalence of MM was found to increase with increasing age, the largest proportion of patients with MM were those aged 46-55 years. This information adds to the available data on MM and directs health policymakers towards tailoring the management for the same.

The continuous lockdown made people understand the difference between "want" and "need," the importance of local production, and the significance of social media and technology in routine life. The work-from-home strategy gave a chance to appreciate the work--life balance in a more applied way. The first-ever lifetime experience of unbelievable rejuvenating nature because of lack of human play taught people to appreciate nature. Although the current focus is on responding to the pandemic and on coping with its immediate effects, yet this is the time when there is an urgent need to create an enabling environment to support and sustain these COVID-19 appropriate behaviors (maintenance stage) to reap the maximum benefits out of them. Sustaining these appropriate behaviors is also important considering the bimodal distribution of the COVID-19 and possibility of advent of the second wave of COVID-19 in near future.
