Functional connectivity was evaluated through five different processing algorithms and quantified in terms of maximum-coherence between EEG electrodes at 15 frequencies from 1 to 45 Hz. We applied a multi-variate Partial Least Squares (PLS) Correlation analysis to simultaneously identify specific connectivity channels (EEG electrode pairings) and frequencies that robustly correlated with FMU. We then applied PLS-Regression to the identified channels and frequencies to generate a set of coefficients for estimating the FMU. Participants were randomly assigned to a training-set of eight and a test-set of two. Crossvalidation with leave-one-out approach on the training-set, using Phase-Lag-Index processing algorithm, resulted in an R2 of 0.97 and a least-square linear fit slope of 1 for predicted versus actual FMU, with a root-mean-square error of 1.9 on FMU scale. Application of regression coefficients to the connectivity measures from the test-set resulted in predicted FMU of 47 and 38 versus actual scores of 46 and 39, respectively. Our results demonstrated that the evaluation of neural correlates of FMU shows promise in addressing the challenges associated with the availability of trained examiners to carry out the assessments.Functional assessment is an essential part of rehabilitation protocols after stroke. Our results show that low-frequency rTMS produced a delayed long-lasting increase in alpha-band power values in frontoparietal brain areas and an immediate long-lasting increase in theta-band power values in the ipsilateral frontal and contralateral centroparietal areas. It is especially practical as noise levels do not need to be known when the model is developed or at test time. We propose a theoretically-grounded blind and universal deep learning image denoiser for additive Gaussian noise removal. Our network is based on an optimal denoising solution, which we call fusion denoising. It is derived theoretically with a Gaussian image prior assumption. Synthetic experiments show our network's generalization strength to unseen additive noise levels. We also adapt the fusion denoising network architecture for image denoising on real images. Our approach improves real-world grayscale additive image denoising PSNR results for training noise levels and further on noise levels not seen during training. It also improves state-of-the-art color image denoising performance on every single noise level, by an average of 0.1dB, whether trained on or not.

Pseudomonas simiae PICF7 is an indigenous inhabitant of the olive (Olea europaea L.) rhizosphere/root endosphere and an effective biocontrol agent against Verticillium wilt of olive (VWO), caused by the soil-borne fungus Verticillium dahliae. This study aimed to evaluate the potential involvement of selected phenotypes of strain PICF7 in root colonization ability and VWO biocontrol. Therefore, a random transposon-insertion mutant bank of P. simiae PICF7 was screened for the loss of phenotypes likely involved in rhizosphere/soil persistence (copper resistance), root colonization (biofilm formation) and plant growth promotion (phytase activity). Transposon insertions in genes putatively coding for the transcriptional regulator CusR or the chemotaxis protein CheV were found to affect copper resistance, whereas an insertion in fleQ gene putatively encoding a flagellar regulatory protein hampered the ability to form a biofilm. However, these mutants displayed the same antagonistic effect against V. dahliae as the parental strain. Remarkably, two mutants impaired in biofilm formation were never found inside olive roots, whereas their ability to colonize the root exterior and to control VWO remained unaffected. Endophytic colonization of olive roots was unaltered in mutants impaired in copper resistance and phytase production. Results demonstrated that the phenotypes studied were irrelevant for VWO biocontrol.Petroleum agriculture, characterized by mechanization and chemistry, is developing rapidly in China. We introduce the most advanced technologies in Chinese agricultural development and the technical scope includes new agricultural energy power generation, agricultural energy use and the safe operation of agricultural energy systems. We describe the detailed data of agricultural bioenvironmental and energy engineering to clarify the level of agricultural energy efficiency in China. The overall conclusion of this paper is that the deep integration of agriculture and energy internet has become the development trend of agricultural energy systems.Integrase-defective lentiviral vectors (IDLVs) have been used as a safe and efficient delivery system in several immunization protocols in murine and non-human primate preclinical models as well as in recent clinical trials. In this work, we validated in preclinical murine models our vaccine platform based on IDLVs as delivery system for cancer immunotherapy. To evaluate the anti-tumor activity of our vaccine strategy we generated IDLV delivering ovalbumin (OVA) as a non-self-model antigen and TRP2 as a self-tumor associated antigen (TAA) of melanoma. Results demonstrated the ability of IDLVs to eradicate and/or controlling tumor growth after a single immunization in preventive and therapeutic approaches, using lymphoma and melanoma expressing OVA. Importantly, LV-TRP2 but not IDLV-TRP2 was able to break tolerance efficiently and prevent tumor growth of B16F10 melanoma cells. In order to improve the IDLV efficacy, the human homologue of murine TRP2 was used, showing the ability to break tolerance and control the tumor growth. The ability of the copolymers to crystallize in the solid state, and their thermal properties, were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffractometry. A cytotoxicity assay was used to estimate the viability of human fibroblasts in the presence of the obtained polymers. The results allowed us to demonstrate a nontoxic alternative to poly(2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline) (PiPrOx) with a physiological phase transition temperature (LCST) and a greatly reduced tendency to crystallize. The synthesis of 2-oxazoline polymers with such well-defined properties is important for future biomedical applications.Using a simple esterification reaction of a hydroxyl group with an anhydride group, pristine lignin was successfully converted to a new lignin (COOH-lignin) modified with a terminal carboxyl group. This chemical modification of pristine lignin was confirmed by the appearance of new absorption bands in the FT-IR spectrum. Then, the pristine lignin and COOH-lignin were successfully incorporated into a poly(lactic acid) (PLA) matrix by a typical melt-mixing process. When applied to the COOH-lignin, interfacial adhesion performance between the lignin filler and PLA matrix was better and stronger than pristine lignin. Based on these results for the COOH-lignin/PLA biocomposites, the cost of printing PLA 3D filaments can be reduced without changing their thermal and mechanical properties. All those lesions were painful, highlighting the value of pain as a diagnostic clue. Penile involvement of calciphylaxis is rare and biopsy is often avoided in this area. However, rapid diagnosis of calciphylaxis is important because early treatment has a better chance of being successful. Our patient's condition deteriorated rapidly with development of bilateral retinal artery occlusion and he died shortly thereafter. This case further highlights the fact that calciphylaxis is a systemic vascular disease with an ominous prognosis.Cutaneous metastasis are uncommon and account for only 2% of all skin cancers, but are extremely rare in hypopharyngeal carcinomas. Although often associated with advanced cancer, cutaneous metastasis can be the first indication of relapse or treatment failure. Additionally, the clinical presentation is widely variable, which can make an early diagnosis difficult. New skin lesions should be evaluated in cancer patients to rule out metastases. Herein, we present a patient with an unusual cutaneous metastasis as the first sign of recurrence of a hypopharyngeal carcinoma.Keratoacanthoma centrifugum marginatum (KCM) is an uncommon variant of keratoacanthoma. Keratoacanthoma centrifugum marginatums are most commonly seen on sun-exposed surfaces and present with progressive peripheral expansion and raised, hyperkeratotic borders. A link between antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) and RAE has been reported a few times in the literature. Herein, we present a unique case of RAE diagnosed in a patient with primary APS who was well-managed on warfarin and rituximab with no recent thrombotic events. As RAE can precede or follow a diagnosis of APS, the presence of the condition indicates a need to workup for APS and to ensure those with the condition are adequately anticoagulated. However, as demonstrated in this case, the condition can still occur in patients who are adequately anticoagulated.Extramammary Paget disease (EMPD) is a rare skin cancer that affects areas with a high concentration of apocrine glands including genital, axillary, and anal skin. We report a man with a history of poorly controlled diabetes presenting with extensive scleredema adultorum of the trunk in a "cuirasse" pattern associated with restrictive lung disease. Cutaneous ultrasonography revealed a marked thickening of the dermis as well as various echogenic spots in the dermis. Cutaneous hardness secondary to scleredema may cause limited mobility. Therefore, respiratory manifestations may be associated and assessed, mainly in cases of extensive scleredema involving trunk and shoulders. Moreover, cutaneous ultrasonography may be useful to monitor the evolution of scleredema and confirm the diagnosis.Bullous pemphigoid (BP) most commonly presents as widespread, itchy, tense blisters in older patients. She was treated with systemic corticosteroids and methotrexate, which resulted in an improvement of the arthritis and constitutional symptoms. This case demonstrates that in patients with both rheumatologic and dermatologic symptoms, particularly on acral surfaces, MRH must be a diagnostic consideration. Identifying this disease early in its course can prevent negative consequences for the patients, specifically arthritis mutilans and upper airway involvement.

Although often associated with advanced cancer, cutaneous metastasis can be the first indication of relapse or treatment failure. Additionally, the clinical presentation is widely variable, which can make an early diagnosis difficult. New skin lesions should be evaluated in cancer patients to rule out metastases. Herein, we present a unique case of RAE diagnosed in a patient with primary APS who was well-managed on warfarin and rituximab with no recent thrombotic events. As RAE can precede or follow a diagnosis of APS, the presence of the condition indicates a need to workup for APS and to ensure those with the condition are adequately anticoagulated. However, as demonstrated in this case, the condition can still occur in patients who are adequately anticoagulated.Extramammary Paget disease (EMPD) is a rare skin cancer that affects areas with a high concentration of apocrine glands including genital, axillary, and anal skin. We report a man with a history of poorly controlled diabetes presenting with extensive scleredema adultorum of the trunk in a "cuirasse" pattern associated with restrictive lung disease. Cutaneous ultrasonography revealed a marked thickening of the dermis as well as various echogenic spots in the dermis. Cutaneous hardness secondary to scleredema may cause limited mobility. Therefore, respiratory manifestations may be associated and assessed, mainly in cases of extensive scleredema involving trunk and shoulders. Surveillance with physician adjudication identified mortality and cardiovascular events between visit 3 through 2017.
Mean change in eGFR was loss 6.8 mL/min over the ten year baseline (range -66.0 to +28.9 mL/min). The top 1 percentile lost approximately 5.7 mL/min/year. Participants with extreme eGFR loss were more likely to have diabetes (95% vs 71%), hypertimplications of these findings are broad clinical evaluation may benefit from evaluating change in eGFR over time in addition to dichotomous eGFR. To explore the value of MRI upon diagnosis of ischiofemoral impingement syndrome (IFI) and to recognise deformation or oedema of the quadratus femoris muscle. MRI applied to measure the ischial femoral space (IFS), the average width of quadratus femoral space (QFS), and the ischial intertuberal diameter.
A retrospective analysis was carried out of 213 hip joints MRI images of 58 cases diagnosed with IFI and 61 cases of normal subjects. IFS, QFS and ischial intertuberal diameter were measured by axial T1WI sequence. The morphological and signal changes of the quadratus femoris muscle were observed through proton density weighted image fat suppression sequence (PDWI-FS).
The widths of IFS and QFS in the normal group were larger than those in the case group, while the ischial intertuberal diameter was significantly smaller (
0.05). Pearson correlation analysis revealed that there was a positive correlation (
= 0.824) between IFS and QFS in all hip joints and a negative correlation between the ischial in in the quadratus femoris muscle may be the features of manifestation of IFI.
Mobile-based applications play a leading role in changes in life-style, improve medication adherence, and provide a unique opportunity to aid patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) elevate their healthcare level. Therefore, we aim to design and develop a mobile-based self-care application for patients with T2DM.
The present study was an applied and developmental study to design and develop a mobile-based self-care application for people living with T2DM conducted in 2020. The design and development of the T2DM self-care application were done in 2 main phases of determining the key features and capabilities, and design and development of the T2DM self-care mobile app.
We identified the main model and a set of capabilities and features for the T2DM self-care application. By content analysis on 32 different applications and a previous study by the author, 18 features were extracted for the T2DM self-care mobile app. JAVA programming languages were used to design T2DM applications. Moreover, because T2DM self-care mobile app we are able to deploy a self-care application with a wide range of functionality such as text messaging, blood glucose monitoring, insulin dose suggestions, educational messaging, metabolic management, pedometer counts, and reporting. Future studies are needed to develop self-care applications for a different type of diabetes with different functions of diabetes care.This study investigated the mediating role of depressive symptoms among 147 middle-aged and older adults with FM in the relationship between pain intensity and 4 objective measures of physical performance Fullerton Advanced Balance scale (FAB), 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT), 30-Second Chair Stand (30SCS), and 8-Foot Up and Go Test (8FUPGT). Asymptotic mediation analyses revealed that depressive symptoms fully mediated the relationship between pain intensity and FAB (95% CI [-0.40, -0.10]) and 8FUPGT (CI [0.02, 0.11]) and partially mediated the relationship to 6MWT (CI [-9.15, -2.20]) and 30SCS (CI [-0.29, -0.06]). Findings support the evaluation of co-morbid depression in FM.
Chronic lower **** pain induced by lumbar disc degeneration or herniation exerts a great impact on patients' daily lives. Depression and anxiety often exist among patients with lower **** pain. Some studies mentioned about mechanisms, such as inflammatory biomarkers, which are commonly seen in herniated intervertebral disc (HIVD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). Method Our study used a large database from the National Health Insurance to explore the incidence rate of MDD in patients with HIVD and correlated risk factors. A total of 41,874 patients with HIVD were included in this work. The control group was matched by using propensity scores. Results The results showed a temporal association between prior HIVD and subsequent MDD after adjusting for potential confounding factors. Patients with HIVD were at high risk of developing MDD (hazard ratio, HR 9.00, 95% confidence interval, CI 7.196-11.257) even after adjusting for demographic characteristics and comorbidities (HR 8.47, 95% CI 6.84-10.49, p < 0prior HIVD and subsequent MDD after adjusting for potential confounding factors. Patients with HIVD were at high risk of developing MDD (hazard ratio, HR 9.00, 95% confidence interval, CI 7.196-11.257) even after adjusting for demographic characteristics and comorbidities (HR 8.47, 95% CI 6.84-10.49, p less then 0.0001). A 22-item survey was administered to 229 volunteers in the St. Louis region who tutor children through the Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring program. Although most respondents are familiar with technology and expressed that they are likely to volunteer virtually, their responses varied significantly by age, education, gender, income, and school districts. Some tutors expressed that virtual volunteering may eliminate barriers to in-person volunteering, while others were concerned with establishing a personal connection with students online. Mobile-based applications play a leading role in changes in life-style, improve medication adherence, and provide a unique opportunity to aid patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) elevate their healthcare level. Therefore, we aim to design and develop a mobile-based self-care application for patients with T2DM. The present study was an applied and developmental study to design and develop a mobile-based self-care application for people living with T2DM conducted in 2020. The design and development of the T2DM self-care application were done in 2 main phases of determining the key features and capabilities, and design and development of the T2DM self-care mobile app. We identified the main model and a set of capabilities and features for the T2DM self-care application. By content analysis on 32 different applications and a previous study by the author, 18 features were extracted for the T2DM self-care mobile app. JAVA programming languages were used to design T2DM applications. Moreover, because T2DM self-care mobile app we are able to deploy a self-care application with a wide range of functionality such as text messaging, blood glucose monitoring, insulin dose suggestions, educational messaging, metabolic management, pedometer counts, and reporting. Future studies are needed to develop self-care applications for a different type of diabetes with different functions of diabetes care.This study investigated the mediating role of depressive symptoms among 147 middle-aged and older adults with FM in the relationship between pain intensity and 4 objective measures of physical performance Fullerton Advanced Balance scale (FAB), 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT), 30-Second Chair Stand (30SCS), and 8-Foot Up and Go Test (8FUPGT). Background When exposed to repetitive umbilical cord occlusions (UCO) with worsening acidemia, fetuses eventually develop cardiovascular decompensation manifesting as pathological hypotensive arterial blood pressure (ABP) responses to fetal heart rate (FHR) decelerations. Failure to maintain cardiac output during labor is a key event leading up to brain injury. We reported that the timing of the event when a fetus begins to exhibit this cardiovascular phenotype is highly individual and was impossible to predict. Objective We hypothesized that this phenotype would be reflected in the individual behavior of heart rate variability (HRV) as measured by root mean square of successive differences of R-R intervals (RMSSD), a measure of vagal modulation of HRV, which is known to increase with worsening acidemia. This is clinically relevant because HRV can be computed in real-time intrapartum. Consequently, we aimed to predict the individual timing of the event when a hypotensive ABP pattern would emerge in a fetus frnclusions The key finding is demonstration of FHR monitoring to detect fetal cardiovascular decompensation during labor. This validates the hypothesis that our HRV-based algorithm identifies individual time points of ABP responses to UCO with worsening acidemia by extracting change point information from the physiologically related fluctuations in the RMSSD signal. This performance depends on the acquisition accuracy of beat to beat fluctuations achieved in trans-abdominal ECG devices and fails at the sampling rate used clinically in ultrasound-based systems. Census-based population data and road data were obtained from administrative sources. Service area analysis of all facilities was performed to estimate geographic accessibility. Results Of 93 facilities in 14 provinces and municipalities in northern China, only 30.1% had full specialist capacity. The shortage of pediatric cardiologists and mechanical circulatory support was the primary limiting factor. In 2018, 61.3% of facilities performed 180 km (a typical overnight visit) to receive care in full-capacity facilities. Conclusions Many facilities for CHS in northern China had limited specialist capacity, and many CHD patients received suboptimal surgical care. Policy measures should address the significant geographic disparities to receive high-quality surgical care among disadvantaged patients.
The use of appropriate preoperative antibiotic prophylaxis decreases the risk of surgical site infections (SSI); however, the breadth of plastic surgery procedures makes it challenging to ensure appropriate use for each unique procedure type. Currently, plastic surgeons lack a cohesive and comprehensive set of evidence-based guidelines (EBG) for surgical prophylaxis. We sought to profile the perioperative antibiotic prescribing patterns for plastic surgeons in British Columbia to investigate if they are congruent with published recommendations. In doing so, we aim to determine risk factors for antibiotic overprescribing in the context of surgical prophylaxis.
A literature review identifying EBG for antibiotic prophylaxis use during common plastic surgery procedures was performed. Concurrently, a provincial survey of plastic surgery residents, fellows, academic and community plastic surgeons was used to identify their antibiotic prophylaxis prescribing practices. These findings were then compared to recomm procedures with low EBG compliance may reflect risk avoidant behaviors in practicing surgeons and highlight the importance of improving education on the benefits of antibiotic prophylaxis in these clinical situations.

The purpose of this study was to describe the impact of using a multidisciplinary hand clinic on (1) hand clinic waitlists for urgent operative pathologies and (2) the volume of urgent operative referrals seen by plastic surgery.
A retrospective data analysis of all new referrals to the Peter Lougheed Centre hand clinic in Calgary, Alberta, was performed. Data were collected from 6 months before and after the introduction of the multidisciplinary model (ie, between January 2017 and January 2018). Demographics for all new referrals were collected from the clinic database, including wait times, triage type, and volume of referrals triaged to each discipline.
Prior to using a multidisciplinary model, 81% (n = 591) of new patient referrals were triaged directly to plastic surgery, 4% (n = 28) to physiotherapy, and 6% (n = 43) to minor surgery (N = 728). However, following the addition of physiatry to the clinic, 62% (n = 451) of new patient referrals were triaged directly to plastic surgery, 24% (n = 173) to physiatry, 2% (n = 17) to physiotherapy, and 4% (n = 31) to minor surgery (N = 730). Overall, the number of urgent operative referrals triaged to plastic surgery proportionally increased by 7%, from 67% to 74%. Mean wait times for urgent referrals to plastic surgery decreased by 1.7 ± 1.0 months (

Applying a multidisciplinary model to a hand clinic can allow non-operative cases to be triaged directly to physiotherapy and physiatry, allowing plastic surgeons to manage a higher volume of urgent and operative referrals. Implementing a multidisciplinary hand clinic can, therefore, decrease waitlist volumes and shorten the time to assessment by a plastic surgeon.

The purpose of this study was to describe the impact of using a multidisciplinary hand clinic on (1) hand clinic waitlists for urgent operative pathologies and (2) the volume of urgent operative referrals seen by plastic surgery. A retrospective data analysis of all new referrals to the Peter Lougheed Centre hand clinic in Calgary, Alberta, was performed. Data were collected from 6 months before and after the introduction of the multidisciplinary model (ie, between January 2017 and January 2018). Demographics for all new referrals were collected from the clinic database, including wait times, triage type, and volume of referrals triaged to each discipline. Prior to using a multidisciplinary model, 81% (n = 591) of new patient referrals were triaged directly to plastic surgery, 4% (n = 28) to physiotherapy, and 6% (n = 43) to minor surgery (N = 728). However, following the addition of physiatry to the clinic, 62% (n = 451) of new patient referrals were triaged directly to plastic surgery, 24% (n = 173) to physiatry, 2% (n = 17) to physiotherapy, and 4% (n = 31) to minor surgery (N = 730). Overall, the number of urgent operative referrals triaged to plastic surgery proportionally increased by 7%, from 67% to 74%. A theoretical study of the K-shell total photoabsorption and photoionization cross section spectra of water and ammonia bonded to benzene (C6H6) and the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) naphthalene (C10H8), coronene (C24H12) and circumcoronene (C54H18) by van der Waals (vdW) forces is presented. The discretized electronic pseudospectra at the oxygen and nitrogen K-edges, covering the discrete and the continuum spectral regions, were obtained at the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) level with dispersion correction. An analytic continuation procedure based on the Padé approximants was used in order to obtain the K-shell cross sections of the structures at the discrete and the continuum regions of the spectra. By examining the electronic spectra of water and ammonia bonded to coronene and circumcoronene, we observed that our results agree well with the experiments performed with graphene. Our results, extracted from instrumented nanoindentation experiments in a liquid environment using five pig hearts, revealed variations in elasticity according to the local orientation of the myocardial tissue. In addition, applying the Finite Element Method (FEM) in our model based on transverse isotropy and local tissue orientation proved able to accurately simulate the passive filling of a left ventricle (LV) in a representative 3D geometry. Our model enables improved understanding of the underlying mechanical properties of the LV wall and can serve as a guide for designing and manufacturing biomedical material better adapted to the local epicardial tissue.
There has been a great many technical difficulties in measuring the bond strengths between brittle dental substrates and materials, especially in preparing specimens. This study evaluated the validity of the relatively easy flexural bond strength (FBS) test in measuring bond strength of resin cement to zirconia as an alternative to the cumbersome tensile bond strength (TBS) and micro-tensile bond strength (MTBS) tests.
The FBS and TBS of resin cement to zirconia were measured experimentally after three surface treatments on a zirconia ceramic air abrasion only (A), conditioning with Single Bond Universal (U) after air abrasion, and conditioning with Z-Prime Plus (Z) after air abrasion. The data were investigated using two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Weibull statistics, and a theoretical simulation.
In both the FBS and TBS tests, the experimental data were consistent and quantitatively similar. First, according to ANOVA, the U group showed the highest bond strengths in both tests, followed by the Z group and the A group. In each surface treatment group, the FBS was always higher than the TBS. Second, the Weibull fitting showed the same order of strength in both tests (A < Z < U) and in all surface treatment groups (FBS > TBS). Third, the theoretical ratios calculated from the Weibull moduli agreed well with the experimental ratios of the FBS to the TBS.

The global COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on the utilization of healthcare services; however, the impact on population-level emergency department (ED) utilization patterns for the treatment of acute injuries has not been fully characterized.
This study examined the frequency of North Carolina (NC) EDs visits for selected injury mechanisms during the first eleven months of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Data were obtained from the NC Disease Event Tracking and Epidemiologic Collection Tool (NC DETECT), NC's legislatively mandated statewide syndromic surveillance system for the years 2019 and 2020. Frequencies of January - November 2020 NC ED visits were compared to frequencies of 2019 visits for selected injury mechanisms, classified according to International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) injury diagnosis and mechanism codes.
In 2020, the total number of injury-related visits declined by 19.5% (N = 651,158) as compared to 2019 (N = 809,095). Visits related to motor vehicle traffic crashes declined by a greater percentage (29%) and falls (19%) declined by a comparable percentage to total injury-related visits. Visits related to assault (15%) and self-harm (10%) declined by smaller percentages. Medication/drug overdose visits increased (10%), the only injury mechanism studied to increase during this period.
Both ED avoidance and decreased exposures may have contributed to these declines, creating implications for injury morbidity and mortality. Injury outcomes exacerbated by the pandemic should be addressed by timely public health responses.

This study aimed to determine the association between sarcopenic findings of the psoas muscle and mortality in patients with sepsis; further, it aimed to assess its clinical utility, in addition to the sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score, in predicting mortality.
This retrospective single-center cohort study included adult patients with sepsis, who were admitted to the intensive care unit, between January 2012 and December 2018. The cross-sectional area of the psoas muscle at the L3 level was measured using computed tomography (CT) images, following which the subjects were categorized as "Above middle," "Middle," and "Sarcopenic." The association between sarcopenic findings and 90-day mortality was investigated by logistic regression analysis. A "modified SOFA score," by adding sarcopenic findings to the SOFA score, was developed and evaluated for its predictive performance.

Gender gaps have been described regarding the chairpersons in academic emergency departments, the composition of editorial boards and publications in emergency medicine. The objective of this study was to determine the gender distribution of chairpersons and board members of emergency medicine societies worldwide.
In this cross-sectional analysis, websites of national emergency medicine societies worldwide were screened for the composition of executive boards and the respective chairpersons. The gender of the board members and chairpersons was obtained either by the profile on the respective web site and/or by internet search and gender identification software. Descriptive statistics were performed and results for national societies were stratified by continent.
A total of 61 boards of national emergency medicine societies were analyzed. Detailed information on the board composition was available for 50 societies, of which 27 were from Europe, 10 from Asia, five from Africa, four from North America, three from South America and one from Australasia.
