Reduction on treatment costs would influence a decrease in ICER, and an increase in the costs of the hrHPV test would increase ICER.

    Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is one of the most fatal infectious diseases in the world, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia. Even though Antiretroviral therapy (ART) significantly decreases mortality overall, death rates are still highest especially in the first year of ART initiation.

    To assess the incidence and predictors of mortality within the first year of ART initiation among adults on ART at Debre-Markos Referral Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia.

    A retrospective follow-up study was conducted among 514 newly enrolled adults to ART from 2014 to 2018 at Debre-Markos Referral Hospital. The mortality rate within the first year was computed and described using frequency tables. To understand the relative value of honeybees compared to other insects for strawberry pollination, the primary crop at the site, we enhanced our observations with video data analysed using insect tracking software to document the time spent by insects on flowers.     Nintedanib can inhibit processes involved in the progression of fibrosis and can reduce the decline in forced vital capacity in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and fibrotic-interstitial lung disease (fibrotic-ILDs). Although the adverse events associated with nintedanib in IPF patients are well known, its safety in other fibrotic-ILD patients remained unclear.

    We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane CENTRAL and Cochrane CDSR for randomized controlled studies which compared nintedanib with a placebo in ILD patients. We estimated pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for adverse events using the DerSimonian-Laird random-effects model.

  • The aim of this work was to examine the mediating role of transition shock on the relationships between resilience, social support, work environment, and turnover intention in newly graduated nurses.

    Reports assessing the associations between nurses' resilience, social support, work environment, and turnover intention, both directly and through the mediating effect of transition shock, are scarce.

    This was a cross-sectional study, which recruited 361 Chinese newly graduated nurses with <1year of work experience.

    Resilience, social support, and work environment directly and significantly predicted transition shock (direct effect -0.158 to -0.350, p< .01). Resilience, work environment, and transition shock directly and significantly affected turnover intention (direct effect -0.118 to -0.257, p< .05). Transition shock mediated the relationships between resilience, social support, work environment, and turnover intention indirectly and significantly (indirect effect -0.019 to -0.041, p< .05).

    The results suggest that nurse managers could enhance resilience and social support and establish a positive work environment to reduce transition shock and turnover intention.

Here, we analysed the natural variation of two families of tandemly repeated regulatory small nucleolar RNAs (SNORD115 and SNORD116) in the house mouse (Mus musculus). While vicariance and range expansion processes associated with glacial cycles have been widely documented, it is unclear whether refugial populations of co-distributed species have experienced shared histories of population size change. We analyse whole-genome sequence data to reconstruct and compare demographic histories during the Quaternary for Iberian refuge populations in a single ecological guild (seven species of chalcid parasitoid wasps associated with oak cynipid galls). For four of these species, we find support for large changes in effective population size (Ne ) through the Pleistocene that coincide with major climate events. However, there is little evidence that the timing, direction and magnitude of demographic change are shared across species, suggesting that demographic histories in this guild are largely idiosyncratic, even at the scale of a single glacial refugium.One major approach to modeling dispersion of pollutants inside confined spaces describes the turbulent transport of material as the product of an eddy diffusivity and the local concentration gradient. This paper examines the applicability of this eddy diffusivity/gradient model by (1) describing the conditions under which this approach is an appropriate representation of turbulent transport, and (2) re-analysis of data provided in studies that have successfully applied gradient transport to describe tracer concentrations. We find that the solutions of the mass conservation equation based on gradient transport provide adequate descriptions of concentration measurements from two studies representative of two types of sources instantaneous and continuous release of aerosols. We then provide the rationale for the empirical success of the gradient transport model. The solutions of the gradient transport model allow us to examine the relationship between the ventilation rate and the spatial and temporal behavior of the dose of material associated with aerosol releases in a room. We conclude with the associated implications on mitigation of exposure to aerosols such as airborne virus or bacteria.Maize is an important crop worldwide, as well as a valuable model with vast genetic diversity. Accurate genome and annotation information for a wide range of inbred lines would provide valuable resources for crop improvement and pan-genome characterization. In this study, we generated a high-quality de novo genome assembly (contig N50 of 15.43 Mb) of the Chinese elite inbred line RP125 using Nanopore long-read sequencing and Hi-C scaffolding, which yield highly contiguous, chromosome-length scaffolds. Global comparison of the RP125 genome with those of B73, W22, and Mo17 revealed a large number of structural variations. To create new germplasm for maize research and crop improvement, we carried out an EMS mutagenesis screen on RP125. In total, we obtained 5818 independent M2 families, with 946 mutants showing heritable phenotypes. Taking advantage of the high-quality RP125 genome, we successfully cloned 10 mutants from the EMS library, including the novel kernel mutant qk1 (quekou "missing a small part" in Chinese), which exhibited partial loss of endosperm and a starch accumulation defect.

  • This low-cost paper-based tool may be helpful for the 25% of hospitals in the USA not using clinical decision support in their electronic health record (EHR), as well as for hospitals outside the United States who may not have access to EHRs.The flu vaccination rate is still too low, both among healthcare providers (HCPs) and among health sciences university students. This study aims to assess the reasons of past and future flu vaccination acceptance among health sciences university students, and second, to identify what interventions would be helpful to foster acceptance of the flu vaccination among HCPs. A multicentre cross-sectional study was performed, using a validated questionnaire administered to health sciences students enrolled in 14 Italian universities. A multivariable logistic regression model was used. A total of 3131 questionnaires were collected. The statement that mandatory vaccination is required to increase adhesions to vaccinations (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.57; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.25-1.97), being in favour of this obligation (aOR = 7.91; 95% CI = 2.50-25.02) and considering themselves as people at risk of infection (aOR = 1.96; 95% CI = 1.46-2.64), are associated with having received the vaccination in the past flu season; on the other hand, planning to be vaccinated for the next season to avoid infecting patients is protective (aOR = 0.51; 95% CI = 0.38-0.70). This study shows which beliefs are associated with having joined the previous vaccination campaign in a large sample of HCPs. The acceptance of vaccination is an outcome behaviour resulting from a complex decision-making process. In order to implement coverage of the influenza vaccination in HCPs, it is necessary to implement awareness campaigns and provide specific information for this category of workers.
    Antimicrobial usage and stewardship programmes during COVID-19 have been poorly studied. Prescribing practice varies despite national guidelines, and there is concern that stewardship principles have suffered.

    To analyse antibiotic prescriptions during the COVID-19 pandemic at a teaching hospital and to propose improved approaches to stewardship.

    We reviewed COVID-19 admissions to medical wards and intensive care units (ICUs) in a London teaching hospital to assess initial antibiotic usage and evidence of bacterial co-infection, and to determine if our current antibiotic guidelines were adhered to.

    Data from 130 inpatients (76% medical and 24% ICU) were obtained. On admission, 90% were treated with antibiotics. No microbiological samples taken on admission provided definitive evidence of respiratory co-infection. In 13% of cases, antibiotics were escalated, usually without supporting clinical, radiological or laboratory evidence. In 16% of cases, antibiotics were stopped or de-escalated within 72 h. Bl that a more restrictive antibiotic prescribing approach is warranted. We propose strategies for effective stewardship and estimate the effect this may have on antibiotic consumption.
    Gram-negative bloodstream infection (GNBSI) is a threat to public health in terms of mortality and antibiotic resistance. The hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) cohort accounts for 15%-20% of GNBSI, yet few strategies have been explored to reduce HPB GNBSI.

    To identify clinical factors contributing to HPB GNBSI and strategies for its prevention.

    We performed a retrospective analysis of 433 cases of HPB GNBSI presenting to four hospitals between April 2015 and May 2019. We extracted key data from hospital and primary care records including the underlying source of GNBSI; previous documentation of biliary disease; and any previous surgical or non-surgical management.

    Out of 433 cases of HPB GNBSI, 388 had clear evidence of HPB origin. The source of GNBSI was related to gallstone disease in 282 of the 388 cases (73%) and to HPB malignancy in 70 cases (18%). https://www.selleckchem.com/products/imidazole-ketone-erastin.html Of the gallstone-related cases, 117 had previously been diagnosed with symptomatic gallstones. Of the 70 malignant cases, five could have been prevented through earlier biliary stenting, use of metal stents instead of plastic stents or earlier pancreaticoduodenectomy.

    Research on handwashing continues to draw researchers' interest owing to its public health importance and significance in the reduction of infectious diseases. The aims of this study are to (1) understand the pattern and predictors of handwashing using soap/detergent and water; and (2) assess the spatial clustering of handwashing through soap/detergent and water at the district level in India.

    Data of households where the place for handwashing was observed by the research investigators (n = 582,064), gathered through the National Family Health Survey-4 (2015-2016), were used for this analysis. The availability of soap/detergent and water at the usual place of handwashing was assumed to be used for handwashing. Binary logistic regression was carried out to examine the adjusted effect of socioeconomic characteristics on the use of soap/detergent and water for handwashing. The univariate local indicator of spatial association (LISA) cluster map and Moran's I statistics were applied for assessing spatial autocorrelations at the district level. Analyses were carried out with IBM-SPSS Software.

    Two-fifths of Indian households do not use both soap/detergent and water for handwashing. Households using both the cleansing elements vary considerably by socioeconomic characteristics- worse for the socioeconomically disadvantaged groups. There is spatial clustering in the use of soap/detergent and water for handwashing lower in a cluster of districts in eastern India.

This study aims to assess the reasons of past and future flu vaccination acceptance among health sciences university students, and second, to identify what interventions would be helpful to foster acceptance of the flu vaccination among HCPs. A multicentre cross-sectional study was performed, using a validated questionnaire administered to health sciences students enrolled in 14 Italian universities. A multivariable logistic regression model was used. A total of 3131 questionnaires were collected. The statement that mandatory vaccination is required to increase adhesions to vaccinations (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.57; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.25-1.97), being in favour of this obligation (aOR = 7.91; 95% CI = 2.50-25.02) and considering themselves as people at risk of infection (aOR = 1.96; 95% CI = 1.46-2.64), are associated with having received the vaccination in the past flu season; on the other hand, planning to be vaccinated for the next season to avoid infecting patients is protective (aOR = 0.51; 95% CI = 0.38-0.70). Antimicrobial usage and stewardship programmes during COVID-19 have been poorly studied. Prescribing practice varies despite national guidelines, and there is concern that stewardship principles have suffered. To analyse antibiotic prescriptions during the COVID-19 pandemic at a teaching hospital and to propose improved approaches to stewardship. We reviewed COVID-19 admissions to medical wards and intensive care units (ICUs) in a London teaching hospital to assess initial antibiotic usage and evidence of bacterial co-infection, and to determine if our current antibiotic guidelines were adhered to. Data from 130 inpatients (76% medical and 24% ICU) were obtained. On admission, 90% were treated with antibiotics. No microbiological samples taken on admission provided definitive evidence of respiratory co-infection. In 13% of cases, antibiotics were escalated, usually without supporting clinical, radiological or laboratory evidence. In 16% of cases, antibiotics were stopped or de-escalated within 72 h. Bl that a more restrictive antibiotic prescribing approach is warranted. We propose strategies for effective stewardship and estimate the effect this may have on antibiotic consumption. Gram-negative bloodstream infection (GNBSI) is a threat to public health in terms of mortality and antibiotic resistance. The hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) cohort accounts for 15%-20% of GNBSI, yet few strategies have been explored to reduce HPB GNBSI. To identify clinical factors contributing to HPB GNBSI and strategies for its prevention. We performed a retrospective analysis of 433 cases of HPB GNBSI presenting to four hospitals between April 2015 and May 2019. We extracted key data from hospital and primary care records including the underlying source of GNBSI; previous documentation of biliary disease; and any previous surgical or non-surgical management. Out of 433 cases of HPB GNBSI, 388 had clear evidence of HPB origin. Saffron and crocetin extended the life span in the G51D fly PD model. Saffron suppressed the rough-eyed phenotype and the dispersion of the size histogram of the ocular long axis in the eye of A30P fly PD model. Saffron had a cytoprotective effect on a human neuronal cell line with α-synuclein fibrils. We sought to quantify maternal-fetal hemodynamics using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and explore their relationships with adverse events.

    Pregnant women with moderate or severe HD (n=22; age 32±5 years) were compared with healthy controls (n=21; 34±3 years). An MRI was performed during the third trimester at peak output (maternal-fetal) and six-months postpartum with return of maternal hemodynamics to baseline (reference). Phase-contrast MRI was used for flow quantification and was combined with T1/T2 relaxometry for derivation of fetal oxygen delivery/consumption.

  • Pseudophakic bullous keratopathy and Fuchs' endothelial dystrophy are the two most common causes of corneal edema after cataract surgery. We report a 61-year-old alcoholic male with bilateral corneal edema that improved after his alcohol abstinence. He had uneventful bilateral cataract surgery 3 years ago and blurred vision in both eyes developed for weeks. As he had no history of endothelial dystrophy, the treatment for viral endotheliitis was used initially yet in vain. We asked him to stop alcohol and adjusted his psychiatric drugs, but he lied about stopping drinking. The corneal edema progressed, and finally, he underwent penetrating keratoplasty in his left eye 1 year later. During hospitalization for surgery, alcohol withdrawal syndrome was noted because he could not drink alcohol in our hospital. After he quit drinking for months, corneal edema in the right eye disappeared. Our case highlights that alcoholism can result in corneal edema, and stopping drinking is necessary in these patients.
    To investigate the repeatability of tear osmolarity in healthy Saudi subjects using an I-PEN osmolarity device.

    Thirty typical male subjects with healthy eyes (27.4 ± 4.9 years) participated in the study. Eye abnormalities were tested with a slit lamp, and eye comfort was determined with the surface disease index. Measurements of the tear break-up time and phenol red thread tests were used for as exclusion criteria. The tear osmolarity test, using an I-PEN osmolarity system, was performed three times in the right eye of each subject with a 5 min' gap between tests.

    To compare the therapeutic effect of sodium hyaluronate (SH)-trehalose (Trehalube, Microlabs, Bangalore, India, SH 0.1% and trehalose 3%) or SH (0.1% Hylotears, Raymed, Chandigarh, India) alone in patients with dry eye disease (DED).

    Patients were randomized into two groups SH-trehalose (SH 0.1% and trehalose 3%) or SH (0.1% Hylotears) alone. The Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire was used to assess patient's symptoms. Patients were followed up at 4 and 8 weeks, and OSDI score, tear film break-up time (TBUT), tear film height (TFH), Schirmer's test, and conjunctival staining were evaluated at each visit.

    A total of 384 patients were included in the study, 192 patients in each arm. The mean age of participants was 37.62 + 14.4 years and 225 were women (56%). The improvement in Schirmer's test was significantly better in the SH-trehalose group at 8 weeks (5.26 + 4.3 mm, 95% confidence interval = 4.6-5.9 mm) compared to the SH group (3.71 + 3.9, 95% confidence interval = 3.15-4.28 mm). The TBUT and TFH showed slight improvement at 4 weeks in both groups, but not at 8 weeks. There were no group differences at all-time points in terms of conjunctival staining and OSDI-based grades of DED.

    The purpose is to study the ocular surface changes among patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and to correlate them with tear film markers such as insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1, interleukin (IL)-1β, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α levels.

    The study was carried out on diabetic patients (>5 years' duration) and healthy age- and gender-matched controls with 21 individuals in each group. Schirmer's test for basal and reflex tear secretion, tear film breakup time (TBUT) for tear stability, ocular staining score (OSS) for dryness severity, ocular surface disease index (OSDI) for symptomatic assessment of dryness and conjunctival impression cytology (IC) for epithelial cell integrity, keratinization, squamous metaplasia, and goblet cell density was studied.     Pseudophakic bullous keratopathy and Fuchs' endothelial dystrophy are the two most common causes of corneal edema after cataract surgery. We report a 61-year-old alcoholic male with bilateral corneal edema that improved after his alcohol abstinence. He had uneventful bilateral cataract surgery 3 years ago and blurred vision in both eyes developed for weeks. As he had no history of endothelial dystrophy, the treatment for viral endotheliitis was used initially yet in vain. We asked him to stop alcohol and adjusted his psychiatric drugs, but he lied about stopping drinking. The corneal edema progressed, and finally, he underwent penetrating keratoplasty in his left eye 1 year later. During hospitalization for surgery, alcohol withdrawal syndrome was noted because he could not drink alcohol in our hospital. After he quit drinking for months, corneal edema in the right eye disappeared. Our case highlights that alcoholism can result in corneal edema, and stopping drinking is necessary in these patients. To investigate the repeatability of tear osmolarity in healthy Saudi subjects using an I-PEN osmolarity device. Thirty typical male subjects with healthy eyes (27.4 ± 4.9 years) participated in the study. Patients were randomized into two groups SH-trehalose (SH 0.1% and trehalose 3%) or SH (0.1% Hylotears) alone. Patients were followed up at 4 and 8 weeks, and OSDI score, tear film break-up time (TBUT), tear film height (TFH), Schirmer's test, and conjunctival staining were evaluated at each visit. Multiple membrane-active domains from the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronavirus (CoV) spike protein have been reported to act as the functional fusion peptide such as the peptide sequence located between the S1/S2 and S2' cleavage sites (FP1), the S2'-adjacent fusion peptide domain (FP2), and the internal FP sequence (cIFP). Using a combined biophysical approach, we demonstrated that the α-helical coiled-coil-forming internal cIFP displayed the highest membrane fusion and permeabilizing activities along with membrane ordering effect in phosphatidylcholine (PC)/phosphatidylglycerol (PG) unilamellar vesicles compared to the other two N-proximal fusion peptide counterparts. While the FP1 sequence displayed intermediate membranotropic activities, the well-conserved FP2 peptide was substantially less effective in promoting fusion, leakage, and membrane ordering in PC/PG model membranes. Furthermore, Ca2+ did not enhance the FP2-induced lipid mixing activity in PC/phosphatidylserine/cholesterol lipid membranes, despite its strong erythrocyte membrane perturbation. Functional predictions reveal some separation between holdfast and leaf communities, with higher representation of sulphur cycling taxa in the holdfast and higher representation of nitrogen cycling taxa in the leaves. In this sense, learning tools are becoming a commodity but, to be able to assist doctors on a daily basis, it is essential to fully understand how models can be interpreted. In this survey, we analyse current machine learning models and other in-silico tools as applied to medicine-specifically, to cancer research-and we discuss their interpretability, performance and the input data they are fed with. Artificial neural networks (ANN), logistic regression (LR) and support vector machines (SVM) have been observed to be the preferred models. In addition, convolutional neural networks (CNNs), supported by the rapid development of graphic processing units (GPUs) and high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructures, are gaining importance when image processing is feasible. The resulting polymers are evaluated for the degree of monomeric conversion, polymerization shrinkage, water sorption, glass transition temperature, and flexural strength. Isosorbide glycerolate dimethacrylate (ISDGMA) is synthesized, and Bisphenol A glycerolate dimethacrylate (BisGMA) is prepared, and both are evaluated as a reference. The experience of online shopping for fresh food during the lock-down days has promoted more online shopping. The factors, such as frequency of online shopping before the COVID-19 outbreak, frequency of online shopping during the COVID-19 pandemic, and age, have a negative effect on the proportion of online shopping after the lock-down days, while the proportion of online shopping before the COVID-19 outbreak, the proportion of online shopping during the COVID-19 pandemic, and travel time of in-store shopping before the COVID-19 outbreak have a positive effect. This study provides valuable baseline data that can be used to monitor microbial change, and helps lay the foundation upon which we can begin to understand the complexities of reef-associated microbial communities and the roles they play in the functioning and diversity of marine ecosystems.Artificial Intelligence is providing astonishing results, with medicine being one of its favourite playgrounds. Machine Learning and, in particular, Deep Neural Networks are behind this revolution. Among the most challenging targets of interest in medicine are cancer diagnosis and therapies but, to start this revolution, software tools need to be adapted to cover the new requirements. In this sense, learning tools are becoming a commodity but, to be able to assist doctors on a daily basis, it is essential to fully understand how models can be interpreted. In this survey, we analyse current machine learning models and other in-silico tools as applied to medicine-specifically, to cancer research-and we discuss their interpretability, performance and the input data they are fed with. Artificial neural networks (ANN), logistic regression (LR) and support vector machines (SVM) have been observed to be the preferred models. In addition, convolutional neural networks (CNNs), supported by the rapid development of graphic processing units (GPUs) and high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructures, are gaining importance when image processing is feasible. However, the interpretability of machine learning predictions so that doctors can understand them, trust them and gain useful insights for the clinical practice is still rarely considered, which is a factor that needs to be improved to enhance doctors' predictive capacity and achieve individualised therapies in the near future.A series of bio-based hydrophobically modified isosorbide dimethacrylates, with para-, meta-, and ortho- benzoate aromatic spacers (ISBGBMA), are synthesized, characterized, and evaluated as potential dental restorative resins. The new monomers, isosorbide 2,5-bis(4-glyceryloxybenzoate) dimethacrylate (ISB4GBMA), isosorbide 2,5-bis(3-glyceryloxybenzoate) dimethacrylate (ISB3GBMA), and isosorbide 2,5-bis(2-glyceryloxybenzoate) dimethacrylate (ISB2GBMA), are mixed with triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) and photopolymerized. The resulting polymers are evaluated for the degree of monomeric conversion, polymerization shrinkage, water sorption, glass transition temperature, and flexural strength. Isosorbide glycerolate dimethacrylate (ISDGMA) is synthesized, and Bisphenol A glycerolate dimethacrylate (BisGMA) is prepared, and both are evaluated as a reference. Poly(ISBGBMA/TEGDMA) series shows lower water sorption (39-44 µg/mm3) over Poly(ISDGMA/TEGDMA) (73 µg/mm3) but higher than Poly(BisGMA/TEGDMA) (26 µg/mm3). Flexural strength is higher for Poly(ISBGBMA/TEGDMA) series (37-45 MPa) over Poly(ISDGMA/TEGDMA) (10 MPa) and less than Poly(BisGMA/TEGDMA) (53 MPa) after immersion in phosphate-buffered saline (DPBS) for 24 h. The results suggest that more citizens in Wuhan city will buy fresh food online and the cost and frequency are also increased. The experience of online shopping for fresh food during the lock-down days has promoted more online shopping. The factors, such as frequency of online shopping before the COVID-19 outbreak, frequency of online shopping during the COVID-19 pandemic, and age, have a negative effect on the proportion of online shopping after the lock-down days, while the proportion of online shopping before the COVID-19 outbreak, the proportion of online shopping during the COVID-19 pandemic, and travel time of in-store shopping before the COVID-19 outbreak have a positive effect. Among the mechanisms that control Rho-GTPase activity and signalling are cell surface receptors, GEF/GAP complexes that tightly regulate single Rho-GTPase dynamics, GEF/GAP and GEF/GEF functional complexes that coordinate multiple Rho-family GTPase activities, effector positive feedback loops, and mutual antagonism of opposing Rho-GTPase pathways. These complex regulatory mechanisms are employed by the cells of the nervous system in almost every step of development, and prominently figure into the processes of synaptic plasticity that underlie learning and memory. Changes before and after COVID-19 were evaluated with a paired sample t-test and chi-square test. A Pearson correlation test was used to show the relationships between variables. The study was completed with 263 participants in total. The average age of the participants was 26.3 ± 6.9 (18-45). Participants' duration of period (p = .003) and pads used per day (p = .002) decreased compared to their experience before the COVID-19 outbreak. The mean total MSQ score was 3.1 ± 0.8 (0-4), mean STAI-1 score was 45.1 ± 9 (20-78) and mean STAI-II score was 43.3 ± 5.9 (30-69). It was found that STAI-I and STAI-II scores showed a positive correlation with MSQ-Somatic subgroup scores(r = 0.153, p = .013; 0.190, p = .0it will be possible to evaluate whether the menstrual cycle parameters return to their former order and consequently this hypothesis will be able to be more definitively confirmed.

  • The accuracy of all the analytical results is verified by Monte Carlo simulation.Starting from a peculiar image observed below a bubble that is floating at a water-air interface, this paper analyzes several optical properties of these special types of refracting objects (termed bubble axicons). Using mainly geometrical optics, their relation to common axicons, the shadow-sausage effect, and elementary optical catastrophes (caustics) are discussed.While using digital halftoning to achieve multi-tones in a 1 bit electrophoretic display (EPD), e.g., a three-pigment chromatic EPD, the drive current is significantly increased because of frequently reversed pixel values. Aimed at this issue, this study first establishes a model that can accurately predict the drive current from image content. Next, based on the direct binary search method, a new halftoning method is proposed by constructing a combined merit function that incorporates both the perceptual image quality and the drive current. As a result, in experiments using a 13.5 in. three-pigment EPD and several test images, compared with the well-developed error-diffusion method, the proposed method produces little image quality degradation, whereas the drive current increase with respect to the minimum current of the EPD is reduced from 71.8 to 33.0 mA, for a significant reduction of 54.0%.A passively mode-locked thulium-doped fiber laser using a tungsten ditelluride saturable absorber ($\rm WTe_2\mbox-\rm SA$WTe2-SA) is demonstrated. High-power mode-locked pulses with an average output power of 108.1 mW were achieved by incorporating the $\rm WTe_2\mbox-\rm SA$WTe2-SA into a thulium-doped fiber oscillator. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest average power obtained from a $\rm WTe_2\mbox-\rm SA$WTe2-SA-based fiber laser. We further amplified the output power to 5.60 W with an all-fiber thulium-doped double-cladding fiber amplifier. This model provides the irradiance profile as a function of both the LED-target distance and the coordinates of every point on the irradiated surface. The model is formulated in terms of simple sigmoid functions, in which LED size and light flux are fundamental parameters. The accuracy of the irradiance pattern model is tested both with theory and with experimental measurements.In this work, we present the fabrication technology of a monolithically integrated photonic platform combining key components for optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging, thereby including a photonic interferometer, a collimating lens, and a 45° reflecting mirror that directs the light from the interferometer to the collimator. The proposed integration process simplifies the fabrication of an interferometric system and inherently overcomes the complexity of costly alignment procedures while complying with the necessarily stringent optical constraints. Fabricated waveguide characterization shows total optical losses as low as 3 dB, and less than 1 dB of additional loss due to the Si 45° mirror facet. The alignment standard deviation of all components is within 15 nm. The integrated lens profile achieves a divergence angle smaller than 0.7°, which is close to that of a collimator. The proposed photonic platform provides the premise for low-cost and small-footprint single-chip OCT systems.A highly sensitive hollow fiber (HF) sensor based on surface plasmon resonance is proposed and analyzed numerically. The sensor design involves a side polished HF with a nanoscale gold film deposited over the polished surface and an analyte filled core. The hollow portion of the fiber serves simultaneously as an analyte channel and core, when filled with high refractive index liquid. By analyzing the modal characteristics of the sensor using the finite element method, it is found that the wavelength sensitivity of the HF sensor varies from 25,642 nm/RIU (refractive index unit) to 60,000 nm/RIU in the range 1.45 to 1.47 RIU along with highest amplitude sensitivity of $4231.7\,\,\rm RIU^-1$4231.7RIU-1. The minimum measurable alteration by the sensor lies in the order of $10^-6\,\,\rm RIU$10-6RIU. The accuracy of the irradiance pattern model is tested both with theory and with experimental measurements.In this work, we present the fabrication technology of a monolithically integrated photonic platform combining key components for optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging, thereby including a photonic interferometer, a collimating lens, and a 45° reflecting mirror that directs the light from the interferometer to the collimator. The proposed integration process simplifies the fabrication of an interferometric system and inherently overcomes the complexity of costly alignment procedures while complying with the necessarily stringent optical constraints. Fabricated waveguide characterization shows total optical losses as low as 3 dB, and less than 1 dB of additional loss due to the Si 45° mirror facet. The alignment standard deviation of all components is within 15 nm. The integrated lens profile achieves a divergence angle smaller than 0.7°, which is close to that of a collimator. The proposed photonic platform provides the premise for low-cost and small-footprint single-chip OCT systems.A highly sensitive hollow fiber (HF) sensor based on surface plasmon resonance is proposed and analyzed numerically. The sensor design involves a side polished HF with a nanoscale gold film deposited over the polished surface and an analyte filled core. The hollow portion of the fiber serves simultaneously as an analyte channel and core, when filled with high refractive index liquid. By analyzing the modal characteristics of the sensor using the finite element method, it is found that the wavelength sensitivity of the HF sensor varies from 25,642 nm/RIU (refractive index unit) to 60,000 nm/RIU in the range 1.45 to 1.47 RIU along with highest amplitude sensitivity of $4231.7\,\,\rm RIU^-1$4231.7RIU-1. The minimum measurable alteration by the sensor lies in the order of $10^-6\,\,\rm RIU$10-6RIU. The sensor also exhibits a high value of figure of merit (FOM) up to $976\,\,\rm RIU^-1$976RIU-1 representing a very good overall performance. Moreover, due to the feasibility of design, the specific application of the sensor to magnetic field sensing is also demonstrated and achieved maximum sensitivity of 1361 pm/Oe.We propose a very simple and compact structure to realize the subtracting operation using resonant cavities in a photonic crystal structure. The cross section of the structure is $103\;\unicodex00B5\rm m^2$103µm2 and is desirable for integration based on popular planar technology. In the designed subtractor, the cavity was responsible for selecting the wavelength. By changing the boundary rods' cavity condition, the mode could resonate at the desired frequencies. To have resonant cavities, we introduce four defect rods between the input and the output waveguides. The results exhibit the true performance of the device. We used only silicon rods in the proposed device, and hence it is very simple to be fabricated. The finite-difference time-domain method was used for analyzing the proposed structure. The simulation results show that the contrast ratio of the device is 5 dB. We present a theoretical model of a monolithic IC polarimeter that considers the back-reflection's influence for on-axis light. The model was validated using a monolithic four-detector polarimeter, which achieved an error of less than 3%. Additionally, an off-axis model was produced and validated for a simpler two detector polarimeter, demonstrating an error between the TM and TE polarized components of less than 3% for angles spanning an 18° incidence cone.
