RESULTS Twenty-three incoming interns received the pre-residency package and participated in the 2018 Surgical Olympics. This 2018 GVF class had a higher overall mean score for six stations (31.5 [standard deviation = ±7.7]) than the 2016 and 2017 PVF classes (25.6 [standard deviation = ±8]; P less then 0.0001). Knot tying ability and suturing skill were similar between the classes. The GVF group performed better on the remaining four skills . The total time of surgical staff and educators spent per class in 2018 (GVF class) was 30 min and includes six tasks compared with 276 min of effort in each of the 2016 and 2017 classes (PVF included one task). CONCLUSIONS GVF and PVF as a component of preemptive training had the same effect on improving suturing skills among the interns. GVF required less educator editing and voice over time. The CPVT may be underrecognized in SCD victims and a diagnosis of "atypical LQTS" may warrant consideration of CPVT and analysis of RyR2 if the standard cardiac channel gene screen for LQTS is negative. Although the management of both channelopathies is quite common the clinical outcomes are different, with CPVT displaying a more malignant clinical course. Exposure to psychological stress has been associated with the development of sustained arrhythmias. Acute changes in atrial electrophysiology may serve as intermediate phenotypes for stress-induced atrial arrhythmia such as atrial fibrillation. We examined if acute mental stress was associated with the development of abnormal P-wave axis (aPWA) and the role played by stress-induced myocardial ischemia. A total of 359 patients (mean age = 56 ± 9.9 years; 62% men; 43% white) with stable coronary heart disease and normal baseline P-wave axis (between 0° and 75°) were studied. All patients underwent mental stress testing (speech task). A total of 46 (13%) patients developed abnormal P-wave axis during either stress or recovery (stress n = 43, 12%; recovery n = 12, 3%). A rise in heart rate during mental stress was associated with an increased risk of an abnormal P-wave axis (per 5-unit increase OR = 1.37, 95%CI = 1.03, 1.30). Myocardial ischemia induced by mental stress was associated with an increased risk of aPWA in women (OR = 5.2, 95%CI = 1.7, 15.6) and not in men (OR = 0.1, 95%CI = 0.01, 1.01), p-interaction = 0.004). In conclusion, in a sizable proportion of patients, acute mental stress results in the development of an abnormal P-wave axis, and this phenomenon is related to increases in heart rate and, among women, mental stress-induced ischemia. Our data suggest that acute psychological stress can promote adverse transient electrical changes in the atria that may predispose to AF. Electroactive microorganisms (EAMs) can act as pseudocapacitor to store energy and discharge electrons on need, while electromethanogens acting as receptor are able to utilize electrons, protons and carbon dioxide for methanization. However, external energy is required to overcome thermodynamical barriers for electromethanogenesis. Herein, electro-driving power by solar light was established to accelerate conversion of waste organics to bioenergy. The intermittent power supply modes were elucidated for favourable performances (e.g., current density, methane production rate, energy recovery efficiencies and economic evaluation), compared with the control driven by continuous applied voltage. It was found that natural intermittent solar-powered mode was more beneficial for microorganisms involved in electron transfer and energy recovery than manual sharp on-off mode. Electrochemistry analysis unrevealed that a higher redox current and lower resistance were exhibited under the solar-powered mode. A high charge storage capacity and electron mobility were found through cytochrome c content and live cells ratio in the solar-power assisted bioreactor. The intermittent power driving modes can regulate electron transfer proteins with capacitive storage behavior in biomass, which helps to understand the responses of functional communities on the stress of intermittent electric field. These findings indicate a promising perspective of microbial biotechnology driven by solar power to boost bioenergy recovery from waste/wastewater. Many sources of wastewater contain sulfides, which can cause excessive growth of filamentous bacteria such as Thiothrix sp. resulting in bulking sludge in conventional activated sludge systems. Granular sludge systems could potentially also suffer from the growth of filamentous bacteria. Uptake of easily degradable COD by the relatively slow growing Ca. Accumulibacter phosphatis bacteria and the absence of strong diffusion gradients due to plug flow feeding through the settled granular sludge bed are assumed to be the dominant factors for successful granulation. Sulfides will remain after this anaerobic phase and cause growth of sulfide-consuming bacteria such as Thiothrix sp. Here we observed the impact of growth of Thiothrix sp bacteria in a laboratory aerobic granular sludge reactor by feeding a mixture of acetate and thiosulfate in the influent. Thiothrix sp, proliferated when 18% of the influent COD was due to thiosulfate, forming 51.4 ± 8.3% of the total granular biomass. Despite the strong presence of these filamentous bacteria a well settling sludge was maintained (SVI10 equal to 13.3 mL/g). These results confirm that sludge morphology is not necessarily a reflection of the cell morphology of the bacteria, but is highly influence by reactor operation. It also reiterates the fact that compact biofilms are formed when the substrate consumption rate is lower than the substrate transport rate. Wetting by fouling is phenomenon specific to membrane distillation (MD) and are regarded as challenges to the seawater membrane distillation (SWMD) process. To understand fouling and wetting, the influence of Mg and Sr crystals, which can potentially cause scaling, as well as Ca crystals deposited on the membrane surface were investigated. Mg(OH)2 and CaSO4 had significant impact on fouling and wetting. Even if CaCO3 and SrSO4 had no effects on fouling and wetting as single salts, CaCO3 and CaSO4 were dominant in synthetic seawater without Mg(OH)2. However, the occurrence of Mg(OH)2 scales became a cause for concern if Ca ion was removed from seawater for the prevention of fouling and wetting. Therefore, Mg as well as Ca should be removed for proper fouling and wetting control. NaOH/Na2CO3 softening was used for the removal of Ca and Mg ions. In addition, based on the inhibition effects of Mg ions on Ca scales, a new pretreatment method involving the injection of MgCl2 to increase the Mg /Ca ratio was examined.

SEC analysis suggests the possibility of condensation among lignin fragments during heat treatment. Mendelian randomization (MR) studies, using genetic variants as instrumental variables, have also shown associations of genetically predicted LTL with cancer risks. In this study, we performed the first MR analysis on soft tissue sarcoma (STS) to investigate the causal relationship between LTL and the risk of STS. METHODS Genotypes from eleven LTL-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 821 STS cases and 851 cancer-free controls were aggregated into a weighted genetic risk score (GRS) to predict LTL. Multivariate logistic regression was used to assess the association of STS risk with individual SNPs and aggregated GRS. RESULTS Four SNPs displayed evidence for an individual association between long LTL-conferring allele and increased STS risk rs7675998 (odds ratio (OR) = 1.21, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.02-1.43), rs9420907 (OR = 1.31, 95% CI = 1.08-1.59), rs8105767 (OR = 1.18, 95% CI = 1.02-1.37), and rs412658 (OR = 1.18, 95% CI = 1.02-1.36). Moreover, longer genetically predicted LTL, calculated as GRS, was strongly associated with an increased risk of STS (OR = 1.44, 95% CI = 1.18-1.75, p less then 0.001), and there was a significant dose-response association (p for trend less then 0.001 in tertile and quartile analyses). The association of longer LTL with higher STS risk was more evident in women than in men. In stratified analyses by major STS subtypes, longer LTL was significantly associated with higher risks of leiomyosarcoma and gastrointestinal stromal tumors. Recently, the attention has moved to the presence of phthalates (PAEs) and bisphenol A (BP-A), molecules present in plastic materials used both in the production phase and in the conservation of honey. In this study, an analytical method for the simultaneous determination of PAEs (dimethyl phthalate DMP, diethyl phthalate DEP, diisobutyl phthalate DiBP, dibutyl phthalate DBP, bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate DEHP, and di-n-octyl-phthalate DnOP) and BP-A was developed. The extraction technique is the ultrasound-vortex-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (UVA-DLLME), using 150 µL of toluene as an extraction solvent, followed by the gas chromatography coupled with ion trap mass spectrometry analysis (GC-IT/MS). The developed method is sensitive, reliable, and reproducible it shows high correlation coefficients (R > 0.999); limits of detection (LODs) less than 11 ng·g-1; limits of quantification (LOQs) less than 16 ng·g-1; repeatability below 3.6%, except BP-A (11.6%); and accuracy below 4.8%, except BP-A (17.6%). The method was applied to 47 nectar honey samples for evidencing similarities among them. The chemometric approach based on Hierarchical Cluster Analysis and Principal Component Analysis evidenced some similitudes about sample origin as well as marked differences between PAE and BP-A sources.Deep and subcortical white matter hyperintensity (DSWMH) lesions are a small-vessel disease of the brain. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the relationship between DSWMH lesions and periodontal status in Japanese adults who participated in a health check. We enrolled 444 consecutive participants (mean age, 54.5 years) who received both brain and oral health evaluation services at the Asahi University Hospital. Magnetic resonance imaging was used to detect DSWMH lesions. Periodontal status was assessed using the community periodontal index. Of the study participants, 215 (48.4%) had DSWMH lesions. Multivariate logistic regression showed that the presence of DSWMH lesions was significantly related to age ≥ 65 years (vs. less then 65 years, odds ratio [OR] = 2.984, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.696-5.232), systolic blood pressure ≥ 140 mmHg (vs. less then 140 mmHg, OR = 2.579, 95% CI = 1.252-5.314), the presence of ≥ 28 teeth (vs. less then 28 teeth, OR = 0.635, 95% CI = 0.420-0.961), and probing pocket depth (PPD) ≥ 6 mm (vs. PPD less then 6 mm, OR = 1.948, 95% CI = 1.132-3.354) after adjustment for confounding factors. Having PPD ≥ 6 mm may be a risk factor for DSWMH lesions in Japanese adults.Cortisol is commonly used as a significant biomarker of psychological or physical stress. Covalent binding of cortisol antibody (CORT-Ab) onto the AuNPs/MoS2/AuNPs transducer was achieved through the self-assembled monolayer of specially designed polyethylene glycol (PEG, SH-PEG-COOH). Non-specific binding was avoided by passivating the surface with ethanolamine. No studies investigated the white matter microstructural attributes of impulsivity in a large sample of healthy subjects. In the present study 1007 subjects from Human Connectome Project public dataset were divided in two groups, impulsive and not impulsive, basing on Delay Discounting task score. For both groups brain morphometric and microstructural characteristics were investigated. A t-test (correct for multiple comparisons) was performed for each brain parcel and impulsivity measure. Magnetic resonance diffusion images were pre-processed and selected to perform a voxelwise analysis on the fractional anisotropy (FA) maps between impulsive and not impulsive groups. Group analysis showed significant differences in morphometric brain data mainly for temporal and frontal lobes. The impulsive group presented higher FA values in four regions bilateral medial lemniscus and midbrain reticular formation, right superior longitudinal fasciculus, left forceps major, right corticospinal tract. Not impulsive group showed higher FA values in two significant regions right and left anterior thalamus radiation. Concluding, macroscopic and microstructural brain alterations were assessed, identifying new neuroanatomical substrates for multidimensional impulsivity construct in a large sample of healthy subjects.Survivorship care plans (SCPs) serve to communicate critical information needed for cancer survivors' long-term follow-up care. Variable transgene expression was found among transgenic sugarcane lines when revealed through Realtime quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) with highest in S10 line while minimum was observed in V5 line. A similar expression pattern was observed in transgenic sugarcane lines for Vip3A protein concentration which ranged from 5.

As elevated twitching is often observed during REM sleep in some distal muscles, the aim of this study was to assess the potential for a finger-mounted device to measure finger twitches, and thereby differentiate periods of REM and non-REM (NREM) sleep. Methods One night of sleep data was collected by polysomnography from each of 18 (3f, 15m) healthy adults aged 23.2 ± 3.3 (mean ± SD) years. Finger movement was detected using a piezo-electric limb sensor taped to the index finger of each participant. Finger twitch densities were calculated for each stage of sleep. Results Finger twitch density was greater in REM than in NREM sleep (p less then 0.001). Each sleep stage had a unique finger twitch density, except for REM and stage N1 sleep which were similar. Finger twitch density was greater in late REM than in early REM sleep (p = 0.005), and there was a time-state interaction the difference between finger twitch densities in REM and NREM sleep was greater in late sleep than in early sleep (p = 0.007). Conclusion Finger twitching is more frequent in REM sleep than in NREM sleep and becomes more distinguishable as sleep progresses. Finger twitches appear to be too infrequent to make definitive 30-second epoch determinations of sleep stage. Given the financial barriers of the poor households and lack of sustainable health-care financing mechanisms in the country has been recognized to be major factors, the country has implemented community-based health insurance in piloted regions of Ethiopia aiming to improve utilization of health-care services by removing financial barriers. However, there is a dearth of literature regarding the effect of the implemented insurance scheme on the utilization of health-care services. Objective To analyze the effects of a community-based health insurance scheme on the utilization of health-care services in Yirgalem town, southern Ethiopia. Methods The study used both a quantitative and qualitative mixed approach using a comparative cross-sectional study design for a quantitative part using a randomly selected sample of 405 (135 member and 270 non-member) household heads. To complement the findings from the household survey, focus group discussions were used. Multivariate logistic regression was employed to identify the effect of community-based health insurance on health-care utilization. Results The study reveals that community-based health insurance member households were about three times more likely to utilize outpatient care than their non-member counterparts [AOR 2931; 95% CI (1.039, 7.929); p-value=0.042]. A total of 315 participants completed the self-administered and validated questionnaire during the period from August 2018 to March 2019. Results There was poor perception and knowledge of pharmacovigilance and ADRs reporting among pharmacists as well as intern pharmacists. However, pharmacists had better knowledge score compared to interns (P=0.043). Most of the respondents believed that ADRs reporting is important. The majority of both interns and pharmacists stated that they did not receive adequate education about pharmacovigilance during their undergraduate or internship program. Conclusion There is a gap in knowledge and perception about pharmacovigilance among practicing pharmacists and new pharmacy graduates.

During Drosophila and vertebrate brain development, the conserved transcription factor Prospero/Prox1 is an important regulator of the transition between proliferation and differentiation. Prospero level is low in neural stem cells and their immediate progeny, but is upregulated in larval neurons and it is unknown how this process is controlled. Here, we use single molecule fluorescent in situ hybridisation to show that larval neurons selectively transcribe a long prospero mRNA isoform containing a 15 kb 3' untranslated region, which is bound in the brain by the conserved RNA-binding protein Syncrip/hnRNPQ. Syncrip binding increases the mRNA stability of the long prospero isoform, which allows an upregulation of Prospero protein production. Adult flies selectively lacking the long prospero isoform show abnormal behaviour that could result from impaired locomotor or neurological activity. Our findings highlight a regulatory strategy involving alternative polyadenylation followed by differential post-transcriptional regulation. © 2020. This can lead to academic, behavioral, and social difficulties. There are apps for healthy children to improve their spoken language and literacy and apps that focus on sign language proficiency for children with hearing loss, but these apps are limited for children with hearing loss. We have therefore developed an app called Hear Me Read (HMR) which uses enhanced digital stories as therapy tools for speech, language, and literacy for children with hearing loss. Hyaluronic acid was the most commonly used injectable for rhinoplasty revision. Patient satisfaction rates varied between 80% and 100%. Reinjections were necessary in about 20 to 50% of cases whatever the used injectables. Minor complications (swelling, bruising, erythema) were frequent after filler injections (4%). Severe complications such granulomas or vascular embolism causing skin necrosis/visual impairment were rare (0.4%). Their physiopathology, management and prevention are detailed. CONCLUSIONS The use of injectables seems to reduce the need of secondary surgical rhinoplasties. During Drosophila and vertebrate brain development, the conserved transcription factor Prospero/Prox1 is an important regulator of the transition between proliferation and differentiation. Prospero level is low in neural stem cells and their immediate progeny, but is upregulated in larval neurons and it is unknown how this process is controlled. Here, we use single molecule fluorescent in situ hybridisation to show that larval neurons selectively transcribe a long prospero mRNA isoform containing a 15 kb 3' untranslated region, which is bound in the brain by the conserved RNA-binding protein Syncrip/hnRNPQ. Syncrip binding increases the mRNA stability of the long prospero isoform, which allows an upregulation of Prospero protein production. Adult flies selectively lacking the long prospero isoform show abnormal behaviour that could result from impaired locomotor or neurological activity. Our findings highlight a regulatory strategy involving alternative polyadenylation followed by differential post-transcriptional regulation. © 2020. Blood vessel development is one of the most prominent steps in regenerative medicine due to the restoration of blood flow to the ischemic tissues and providing the rapid vascularization in clinical-sized tissue-engineered grafts. However, currently tissue engineering technique is restricted because of the inadequate in vitro/in vivo tissue vascularization. Some challenges like as transportation in large scale, distribution of the nutrients and poor oxygen diffusion limit the progression of vessels in smaller than clinically relevant dimensions as well in vivo integration. In this regard, the scholars attempted to promote the vascularization process relied on the stem cells (SCs), growth factors as well as exosomes and interactions of biomaterials with all of them to enable the emergence of ideal microenvironment which is needed for treatment of unhealthy organs or tissue regeneration and formation of new blood vessels. Thus, in the present review we aim to describe these approaches, advances, obstacles and opportunities as well as their application in regeneration of heart as a prominent angiogenesis-dependent organ.Hearing loss is the most common sensory deficit worldwide with no approved therapeutics for treatment. Local neurotrophin delivery into the cochlea has shown great potential in protecting and repairing the sensory cells important for hearing. However, delivery of these factors into the inner ear at therapeutic levels over a sustained period of time has remained a challenge restricting clinical translation. We have developed a method to test the pharmacokinetics of neurotrophin released from porous silica particles called 'supraparticles' that can provide sustained release of neurotrophins to the inner ear.•This report describes a radiolabeling method to examine neurotrophin retention and distribution in the cochlea. The neurotrophin was labeled with a radioactive tracer (iodine 125 125I) and delivered into the cochlea via the supraparticle system.•Gamma counts reveal drug levels and clearance in the intact cochlea, as well as accumulation in off-target organs (safety test). Autoradiography analyses using film and emulsion permit quantification and visualization of drug distribution at the cellular level. The method has a detection limit of 0.8 pg of radiolabeled neurotrophin-3 in cochlear sections exposed to film.•The tracer 125I with a half-life of 59.4 days can be used to label other drugs/substances with a tyrosine residue and therefore be broadly applicable for long-term pharmacokinetic studies in other systems.In multiple regression Y ~ β0 + β1X1 + β2X2 + β3X1 X2 + É›., the interaction term is quantified as the product of X1 and X2. Premixed feedstock powders of CoCrMo + 2 wt.% tricalcium phosphate (TCP, CoCrTCP) and CoCrMo + 2 wt.% tricalcium phosphate + 4 wt.% Al2O3 (CoCrTCP+Al) were used to surface coat CoCr alloy via Laser Engineered Net Shaping (LENS™) with the objective of increasing CoCr alloy's wear resistance. Electron micrographs of the microstructure revealed the dissociation of intergranular globular carbide phases and reprecipitation into a finer network-like microstructure with homogeneous distribution of Co and Cr. X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra revealed texturing or preferential crystallographic orientation amongst the LENS™ processed materials, with the TCP added CoCr displaying some ε-phase stabilization. Tribological testing resulted in an 82.3% and 71.6% decrease in wear rate and wear coefficient, respectively, for CoCrTCP when compared to commercially available CoCr alloy. Additionally, in situ tribofilm development was observed for the fabricated samples via an increase in contact resistance. The current study resulted in not only a decrease in wear volume but also a decrease in the overall degradation of the coated CoCr alloy.It is well known that atmospheric contamination, especially the particulate matter (PM), causes severe human diseases. Yet, presently air pollution levels have dropped primarily attributable across the nation lockdown forced in the wake of the novel Coronavirus outbreak. In this study, we have attempted to establish a conceivable relationship between Covid 19 and PM10-2.5, obtained from eleven airquality monitoring stations in Chennai city, India for both Pre and during Covid situations and its influence over Covid positive cases. The observations of the materials (+ve cases, PM 10, PM 2.5) collected proved that during precovid regime less polluted areas are indicated with less than 5 infection cases reflecting the healthy people and they are less vulnerable to covid except the few occurrence of foreign source indicating no community spread whereus most polluted spots of precovid regimes are indicated with more than 90 % cases and indicated that people in pollution zones are succumbed to get infected quickly.

BACKGROUND This study aimed to examine the degrees of job burnout and occupational stressors and their associations among healthcare professionals from county-level health alliances in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in county-level health alliances in Qinghai Province, China, in November 2018. The Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey and the 38-item Chinese version of the "Scale for occupational stressors on clinicians" were used. Medical staff in four health alliances from two counties were invited to complete the questionnaire. RESULTS A total of 1052 (age 34.06 ± 9.22 years, 79.1% females) healthcare professionals were included, 68.2% (95% CI 65.2-71.0%) of the participants had job burnout symptoms. Occupational stressors had positive associations with moderate (OR = 1.06, 95% CI 1.05-1.07) and serious (OR = 1.15, 95% CI 1.13-1.19) level of job burnout. Stressors from vocational interest produced the greatest magnitude of odds ratio (OR = 1.76, 95% CI 1.62-1.92) for serious degree of burnout, followed by doctor-patient relationship, interpersonal relationship as well as other domains of occupational stressors. CONCLUSIONS Job burnout was very common among healthcare professionals working in Chinese county-level health alliances, different occupational stressors had associations with job burnout. Appropriate and effective policies and measures should be developed and implemented.Suicide rates worldwide are declining; however, less is known about the patterns and trends in mortality from suicide in sub-Saharan Africa. This study evaluates trends in suicide rates and years of potential life lost from death registration data in South Africa from 1997 to 2016. Suicide (X60-X84 and Y87) was coded using the 10th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10). Changes in mortality rate trends were analysed using joinpoint regression analysis. The 20-year study examines 8573 suicides in South Africa, comprising 0.1% of all deaths involving persons 15 years and older. Rates of suicide per 100,000 population were 2.07 in men and 0.49 in women. Joinpoint regression analyses showed that, while the overall mortality rate for male suicides remained stable, mortality rates due to hanging and poisoning increased by 3.9% and 3.5% per year, respectively. Female suicide mortality rates increased by 12.6% from 1997 to 2004 before stabilising; while rates due to hanging increased by 3.0% per year. The average annual YPLL due to suicide was 9559 in men and 2612 in women. The results show that suicide contributes substantially to premature death and demonstrates the need for targeted interventions, especially among young men in South Africa.PURPOSE To evaluate the accuracy of computer-aided dental implant positions obtained with mucosal-supported templates as compared to Three-Dimensional (3D) planning. MATERIALS AND METHODS One-hundred implants were inserted into 14 edentulous patients using the All-on-4/6 protocol after surgical virtual planning with RealGUIDE, 3DIEMME, and Geomagic software. After 6 months, three-dimensional neck (V) and apex (S) spatial coordinates of implants and angle inclination displacements as compared to virtual plans were evaluated. RESULTS The S maxilla coordinates revealed a significant discrepancy between clinical and virtual implant positions (p-value = 0.091). The V coordinates showed no significant differences (p-value = 0.71). The S (p-value = 0.017) and V (p-value = 0.038) mandible coordinates showed significant discrepancies between the clinical and virtual positions of the screws. Implant evaluation showed a 1-mm of the horizontal deviation in the V point and a 1.6-mm deviation in the S point. A mean 5° angular global deviation was detected. The multivariate permutation test of the S (p-value = 0.02) confirmed the difference. Greater errors in the mandible were detected as compared to the maxilla, and a higher S discrepancy was found in the posterior jaw compared to the anterior section of both the mandible and maxilla. CONCLUSIONS Computer-aided surgery with mucosal-supported templates is a predictable procedure for implant placement. Data showed a discrepancy between the actual dental implant position as compared to the virtual plan, but this was not statistically significant. However, the horizontal and angle deviations detected indicated that flap surgery should be used to prevent implant positioning errors due to poor sensitivity and accuracy in cases of severe jaw atrophy.The high temperatures used in the production of milk may induce modifications in proteins structure. Due to occurrence of the Maillard reaction, lactose binds lysine residues in proteins, affecting the nutritional value. Milk is also an important source of allergenic proteins (i.e., caseins, β-lactoglobulin and α-lactalbumin). Thus, this modification may also affect the allergenicity of these proteins. Focusing on milk whey proteins, a screening on different Ultra High Temperatures (UHT) and pasteurized milk samples was performed to identify lactosylation sites, in particular in protein known epitopes, and to verify the correlation between lactosylation and the harshness of the treatment. BACKGROUND This study aimed to examine the degrees of job burnout and occupational stressors and their associations among healthcare professionals from county-level health alliances in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in county-level health alliances in Qinghai Province, China, in November 2018. The Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey and the 38-item Chinese version of the "Scale for occupational stressors on clinicians" were used. Medical staff in four health alliances from two counties were invited to complete the questionnaire. RESULTS A total of 1052 (age 34.06 ± 9.22 years, 79.1% females) healthcare professionals were included, 68.2% (95% CI 65.2-71.0%) of the participants had job burnout symptoms. Occupational stressors had positive associations with moderate (OR = 1.06, 95% CI 1.05-1.07) and serious (OR = 1.15, 95% CI 1.13-1.19) level of job burnout. Stressors from vocational interest produced the greatest magnitude of odds ratio (OR = 1.76, 95% CI 1.62-1.92) for serious degree of burnout, followed by doctor-patient relationship, interpersonal relationship as well as other domains of occupational stressors. CONCLUSIONS Job burnout was very common among healthcare professionals working in Chinese county-level health alliances, different occupational stressors had associations with job burnout. Appropriate and effective policies and measures should be developed and implemented.Suicide rates worldwide are declining; however, less is known about the patterns and trends in mortality from suicide in sub-Saharan Africa. This study evaluates trends in suicide rates and years of potential life lost from death registration data in South Africa from 1997 to 2016. Suicide (X60-X84 and Y87) was coded using the 10th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10). Changes in mortality rate trends were analysed using joinpoint regression analysis. The 20-year study examines 8573 suicides in South Africa, comprising 0.1% of all deaths involving persons 15 years and older. Rates of suicide per 100,000 population were 2.07 in men and 0.49 in women. Joinpoint regression analyses showed that, while the overall mortality rate for male suicides remained stable, mortality rates due to hanging and poisoning increased by 3.9% and 3.5% per year, respectively. Female suicide mortality rates increased by 12.6% from 1997 to 2004 before stabilising; while rates due to hanging increased by 3.0% per year. The average annual YPLL due to suicide was 9559 in men and 2612 in women. The results show that suicide contributes substantially to premature death and demonstrates the need for targeted interventions, especially among young men in South Africa.PURPOSE To evaluate the accuracy of computer-aided dental implant positions obtained with mucosal-supported templates as compared to Three-Dimensional (3D) planning. MATERIALS AND METHODS One-hundred implants were inserted into 14 edentulous patients using the All-on-4/6 protocol after surgical virtual planning with RealGUIDE, 3DIEMME, and Geomagic software. After 6 months, three-dimensional neck (V) and apex (S) spatial coordinates of implants and angle inclination displacements as compared to virtual plans were evaluated. RESULTS The S maxilla coordinates revealed a significant discrepancy between clinical and virtual implant positions (p-value = 0.091). The V coordinates showed no significant differences (p-value = 0.71). The S (p-value = 0.017) and V (p-value = 0.038) mandible coordinates showed significant discrepancies between the clinical and virtual positions of the screws. Implant evaluation showed a 1-mm of the horizontal deviation in the V point and a 1.6-mm deviation in the S point. A mean 5° angular global deviation was detected. The multivariate permutation test of the S (p-value = 0.02) confirmed the difference. Greater errors in the mandible were detected as compared to the maxilla, and a higher S discrepancy was found in the posterior jaw compared to the anterior section of both the mandible and maxilla. CONCLUSIONS Computer-aided surgery with mucosal-supported templates is a predictable procedure for implant placement. Data showed a discrepancy between the actual dental implant position as compared to the virtual plan, but this was not statistically significant. However, the horizontal and angle deviations detected indicated that flap surgery should be used to prevent implant positioning errors due to poor sensitivity and accuracy in cases of severe jaw atrophy.The high temperatures used in the production of milk may induce modifications in proteins structure. Objective We aimed to study the role of coding VPS13C variants in a large cohort of patients with late-onset Parkinson disease (PD) (LOPD). Methods VPS13C and its untranslated regions were sequenced using targeted next-generation sequencing in 1,567 patients with PD and 1,667 controls from 3 cohorts. Association tests of rare potential homozygous and compound heterozygous variants and burden tests for rare heterozygous variants were performed. Common variants were analyzed using logistic regression adjusted for age and sex in each of the cohorts, followed by a meta-analysis. Results No biallelic carriers of rare VPS13C variants were found among patients, and 2 carriers of compound heterozygous variants were found in 2 controls. There was no statistically significant burden of rare (minor allele frequency [MAF] less then 1%) or very rare (MAF less then 0.1%) coding VPS13C variants in PD. A VPS13C haplotype including the p.R153H-p.I398I-p.I1132V-p.Q2376Q variants was nominally associated with a reduced risk for PD (meta-analysis of the tagging SNP p.I1132V [odds ratio = 0.48, 95% confidence interval = 0.28-0.82, p = 0.0052]). This haplotype was not in linkage disequilibrium with the known genome-wide association study top hit. Conclusions Our results do not support a role for rare heterozygous or biallelic VPS13C variants in LOPD. Methods Critical exon indexing (CEI) was used to identify genes with critical exons (CEGs) from clinically reported CNVs, which may contribute to neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). The 742 pathogenic CNVs and 1,363 variants of unknown significance (VUS) identified by chromosomal microarray analysis in 5,487 individuals with NDDs were subjected to CEI to identify CEGs. CEGs identified in a subsequent random series of VUS were evaluated for relevance to CNV interpretation. Results CEI identified a total of 2,492 unique CEGs in pathogenic CNVs and 953 in VUS compared with 259 CEGs in 6,965 CNVs from 873 controls. These differences are highly significant (p less then 0.00001) whether compared as frequency, average, or normalized by CNV size. Twenty-one percent of VUS CEGs were not represented in Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man, highlighting limitations of existing resources for identifying potentially impactful genes within CNVs. Methods Whole-exome sequencing was performed in a large cohort of 200 familial ALS and 60 sporadic ALS after a systematic screening for C9orf72 hexanucleotide repeat expansion. ERLIN2 variants identified by exome analysis were validated using Sanger analysis. Segregation of the identified variant with the disease was checked for all family members with available DNA. Results Here, we report the identification of ERLIN2 mutations in patients with a primarily SP evolving to rapid progressive ALS, leading to the death of the patients. These mutations segregated with the disease in a dominant (V168M) or recessive (D300V) manner in these families or were found in apparently sporadic cases (N125S). Conclusions Inheritance of ERLIN2 mutations appears to be, within the MND spectrum, more complex that previously reported. These results expand the clinical phenotype of ERLIN2 mutations to a severe outcome of MND and should be considered before delivering a genetic counseling to ERLIN2-linked families. Computer modeling was used to assess changes on protein folding. Results Biallelic pathogenic variants in QARS cause a triad of progressive microcephaly, moderate to severe developmental delay, and early-onset epilepsy. Microcephaly was present at birth in 65%, and in all patients at follow-up. Moderate (14%) or severe (73%) developmental delay was characteristic, with no achievement of sitting (85%), walking (86%), or talking (90%). Additional features included irritability (91%), hypertonia/spasticity (75%), hypotonia (83%), stereotypic movements (75%), and short stature (56%).

All six participating nurses found the screening interview tool useful for initiating discussions about ACP and substitute decision-making. With the increasing need for aircraft pilots, continued low Earth orbit NASA operations, and the emergence of commercial spaceflight, there is a necessity for recruiting and educating the next generation of Aerospace Medicine specialists. This study was designed to create and validate a short Aerospace Medicine curriculum.METHODS Medical students at the University of Texas Medical Branch were recruited to attend a series of six 1-h meetings covering Aerospace Medicine career options and key Aerospace Medicine topics. A survey addressing student demographics, interest in a career in Aerospace Medicine, and knowledge of key Aerospace Medicine topics was administered at the beginning and end of the curriculum. Interest in pursuing a career in Aerospace Medicine pre- and postcurriculum was compared with an independent t-test. The knowledge-based portion of the survey was also evaluated using an independent t-test.RESULTS There were 23 participants who were recruited and filled out the initial survey and 15 participants who attended the final meeting and filled out the postcurriculum survey. Mean interest in pursuing a career in Aerospace Medicine did not change significantly (75.45% before involvement in the curriculum and 83.08% after participation). Knowledge of foundational Aerospace Medicine topics increased from 64.25% before involvement in the curriculum to 73.33% at the end of the study. There was an average of 12 participants at each meeting.DISCUSSION This demonstrates the utility of this curriculum as an educational tool for medical students. Nearly 15 yr of mishap reports were analyzed to determine how fatigue affects USAF operations with the goal of improving fatigue risk management policies and tools.METHODS Summary data for 19,920 aviation mishap reports dating **** to 2003 were collected from the Air Force Safety Automated System (AFSAS). Fatigue-related mishaps were identified based on designations provided within AFSAS. Other metrics examined were characteristics such as timing, cost, and aircraft metrics, among others. Contingency tables built from these metrics were used to assess fatigue-related trends across the aviation community.RESULTS While only 3.88% of all mishaps were identified as fatigue-related, they are associated with 2.1 billion of medical expenses and property damage, or 18% of the 11.7 billion total cost of all mishaps included in the study. Nearly a quarter of the fatigue-related mishaps fall into the most severe mishap category and more than half occurred between 0100 and 0700, local time. Fatigue-related mishaps tended to be more common for Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) and ground operations.DISCUSSION Fatigue is very costly to the USAF despite the relatively low incidence rate of fatigue-related mishaps. This is because larger proportions of severe mishaps were found to be fatigue-related. Since some female astronauts choose to use COCs, this retrospective study examined known risk factors associated with VTE risk to determine whether the available data suggested elevated VTE risk in female astronauts.METHODS Longitudinal health data were requested for female astronauts who flew short and long duration missions between 2000 and 2014. Pre- and postflight hematological and biochemical blood markers were available and evaluated. Astronauts' postflight measurements were compared to clinically relevant terrestrial high risk levels to determine any trend toward increased risk for VTE following spaceflight. With the increasing need for aircraft pilots, continued low Earth orbit NASA operations, and the emergence of commercial spaceflight, there is a necessity for recruiting and educating the next generation of Aerospace Medicine specialists. This study was designed to create and validate a short Aerospace Medicine curriculum.METHODS Medical students at the University of Texas Medical Branch were recruited to attend a series of six 1-h meetings covering Aerospace Medicine career options and key Aerospace Medicine topics. A survey addressing student demographics, interest in a career in Aerospace Medicine, and knowledge of key Aerospace Medicine topics was administered at the beginning and end of the curriculum. Interest in pursuing a career in Aerospace Medicine pre- and postcurriculum was compared with an independent t-test. The knowledge-based portion of the survey was also evaluated using an independent t-test.RESULTS There were 23 participants who were recruited and filled out the initial survey and 15 participants who attended the final meeting and filled out the postcurriculum survey. Mean interest in pursuing a career in Aerospace Medicine did not change significantly (75.45% before involvement in the curriculum and 83.08% after participation). Knowledge of foundational Aerospace Medicine topics increased from 64.25% before involvement in the curriculum to 73.33% at the end of the study. There was an average of 12 participants at each meeting.DISCUSSION This demonstrates the utility of this curriculum as an educational tool for medical students. Nearly 15 yr of mishap reports were analyzed to determine how fatigue affects USAF operations with the goal of improving fatigue risk management policies and tools.METHODS Summary data for 19,920 aviation mishap reports dating back to 2003 were collected from the Air Force Safety Automated System (AFSAS). Fatigue-related mishaps were identified based on designations provided within AFSAS. Other metrics examined were characteristics such as timing, cost, and aircraft metrics, among others. Contingency tables built from these metrics were used to assess fatigue-related trends across the aviation community.RESULTS While only 3.88% of all mishaps were identified as fatigue-related, they are associated with 2.1 billion of medical expenses and property damage, or 18% of the 11.7 billion total cost of all mishaps included in the study. Nearly a quarter of the fatigue-related mishaps fall into the most severe mishap category and more than half occurred between 0100 and 0700, local time. Fatigue-related mishaps tended to be more common for Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) and ground operations.DISCUSSION Fatigue is very costly to the USAF despite the relatively low incidence rate of fatigue-related mishaps. This is because larger proportions of severe mishaps were found to be fatigue-related. Since some female astronauts choose to use COCs, this retrospective study examined known risk factors associated with VTE risk to determine whether the available data suggested elevated VTE risk in female astronauts.METHODS Longitudinal health data were requested for female astronauts who flew short and long duration missions between 2000 and 2014. Pre- and postflight hematological and biochemical blood markers were available and evaluated. Astronauts' postflight measurements were compared to clinically relevant terrestrial high risk levels to determine any trend toward increased risk for VTE following spaceflight. The aim of this review was to present the preoperative imaging features indicating suboptimal resection of epithelial ovarian cancer. The conventional allometric method entails fitting a straight line to logarithmic transformations of the original bivariate data and then ****-transforming the resulting equation (at least implicitly) to form a two-parameter power function, Y = a × Xb , on the arithmetic scale. Although the protocol is widely used in contemporary research, it commonly performs poorly and thereby leads investigators to form inaccurate impressions of the dominant pattern in their data. Here I re-examine the metabolic allometry for six species of carabid beetle to illustrate the problem that arises when pattern in the original data can be described by two (or more) statistically equivalent equations with different functional form. Whereas conventional analyses of data for the beetles yielded only a single descriptive model for each dataset (i.e., the two-parameter power equation), the more versatile protocol used here fitted two to four statistically equivalent equations (including the two-parameter power function) to the same sets of observations. Snout length and skull height were diminished in MT-COMP mouse and the face more closely resembled younger controls. Three-dimensional facial measurements of PSACH faces showed widely spaced eyes, reduced lower facial height, and decreased nasal protrusion, which correlated with a more juvenile appearing face. MT-COMP **** do show delayed endochondral and membranous skull ossification that normalizes with age. METHODS AND RESULTS We performed a nation-wide, register-based cohort study of all Swedish men enrolled for conscription in 1968-2005 (n = 1 008 363; mean age = 18.3 years). RHR and arterial blood pressure were measured together with anthropometrics as part of the enlistment protocol. HF and its concomitant diagnoses, as well as all CM diagnoses, were collected from the national inpatient, outpatient, and cause of death registries. Risk estimates were calculated by Cox-proportional hazards models while adjusting for potential confounders. The results of activity on real food systems showed that the complexes kept the number of E. coli within 5.8 log10 CFU/g after 7 d storage in sauced duck products, while the positive control (ε-PL) was 6.5 log10 CFU/g and negative control (sterile water) was 7.8 log10 CFU/g. Overall, this study confirmed the antibacterial activity of the complexes and provided fundamental knowledge of its antibacterial activity mechanism.Although Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus are the main microorganisms of concern in peanuts, due to aflatoxin contamination, several Salmonella outbreaks from this product have been reported over the last ten decades. Thus, it is important to understand the relationship between microorganisms to predict, manage and estimate the diversity in the peanut supply chain. The purpose of this study was to evaluate aflatoxin production during the co-cultivation of Aspergillus section Flavi and Salmonella both isolated from peanuts. Three strains of A. section Flavi A. flavus producing aflatoxin B, A. flavus non-producing aflatoxin and A. parasiticus producing aflatoxin B and G were co-cultivated with seven serotypes of Salmonella of which six were isolated from the peanut supply chain (S. Muenster, S. Miami, S. Glostrup, S. Javiana, S. Oranienburg and S. Yoruba) and one was S. Typhimurium ATCC 14028. First of all, each Salmonella strain was inoculated by pour plate (ca. 5 log cfu/mL) in PDA (potato dextras not observed. On the other hand, A. flavus preserved their characteristics of aflatoxin B production. The quantification of aflatoxin reduction by Salmonella interaction was evaluated using HPLC method. There was a maximum reduction of aflatoxin production of 88.7% and 72.9% in A. flavus and A. parasiticus, respectively, when cultivated with Salmonella. These results indicate that some serotypes of Salmonella may interfere with aflatoxin production and fungal growth of A. flavus and A. parasiticus in the peanut supply chain.Across vertebrates, species with intense male mating competition and high levels of sexual dimorphism in body size generally exhibit dimorphism in age-specific fertility. Population-level variation should be considered in toxicity assessments and presents the potential for evolved tolerance.Perfluorobutanesulfonate (PFBS), an aquatic pollutant of emerging concern, is found to disturb the neural signaling along gut-brain axis, whereas probiotic additives have been applied to improve neuroendocrine function of teleosts. Both PFBS and probiotics can commonly target nervous system. However, whether and how probiotic bacteria can modulate the neurotoxicities of PFBS remain not explored. It is thus necessary to elucidate the probiotic modulation of PFBS neurotoxicity, which can provide implications to the application of probiotic bacteria in aquaculture industry. In the present study, adult zebrafish were exposed to 0, 10 and 100 μg/L PFBS with or without dietary administration of probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus. Interaction between PFBS and probiotic along gut-brain axis was examined, covering three dominant pathways (i.e., neurotransmission, immune response and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis). The results showed that, compared to the single effects, PFBS and probiotic coexposure significantly altered the acetylcholinesterase activity and neurotransmitter profiles in gut and brain of zebrafish, with mild effects on neuronal integrity. Neurotransmitters closely correlated reciprocally in intestines, which, however, was distinct from the correlation profile in brains. In addition, PFBS and probiotic were combined to impact brain health through absorption of bacterial lipopolysaccharides and production of inflammatory cytokines. Relative to neurotransmission and immune signaling, HPA axis was not involved in the neurotoxicological interaction between PFBS and probiotic. Furthermore, it needs to point out that interactive modes between PFBS and probiotic varied a lot, depending on exposure concentrations, sex and toxic indices. Overall, the present study provided the first evidence that probiotic supplement could dynamically modulate the neurotoxicities of PFBS in teleost.

Population-level variation should be considered in toxicity assessments and presents the potential for evolved tolerance.Perfluorobutanesulfonate (PFBS), an aquatic pollutant of emerging concern, is found to disturb the neural signaling along gut-brain axis, whereas probiotic additives have been applied to improve neuroendocrine function of teleosts. Both PFBS and probiotics can commonly target nervous system. However, whether and how probiotic bacteria can modulate the neurotoxicities of PFBS remain not explored. It is thus necessary to elucidate the probiotic modulation of PFBS neurotoxicity, which can provide implications to the application of probiotic bacteria in aquaculture industry. In the present study, adult zebrafish were exposed to 0, 10 and 100 μg/L PFBS with or without dietary administration of probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus. Interaction between PFBS and probiotic along gut-brain axis was examined, covering three dominant pathways (i.e., neurotransmission, immune response and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis). The results showed that, compared to the single effects, PFBS and probiotic coexposure significantly altered the acetylcholinesterase activity and neurotransmitter profiles in gut and brain of zebrafish, with mild effects on neuronal integrity. Neurotransmitters closely correlated reciprocally in intestines, which, however, was distinct from the correlation profile in brains. In addition, PFBS and probiotic were combined to impact brain health through absorption of bacterial lipopolysaccharides and production of inflammatory cytokines. Relative to neurotransmission and immune signaling, HPA axis was not involved in the neurotoxicological interaction between PFBS and probiotic. Furthermore, it needs to point out that interactive modes between PFBS and probiotic varied a lot, depending on exposure concentrations, sex and toxic indices.
