Introduction Phyllodes tumors are rare fibroepithelial breast tumors, accounting for less than 1% of all breast tumors. Most Phyllodes tumors are benign. However, about 10% are malignant. The Mean age of presentation for the Malignant Phyllodes tumors is 40 years. This case report describes an unusual presentation of Phyllodes tumor in a young female with an unusual site and presentation of the tumor. Presentation of case A 23-year-old female presented with multiple left breast rapidly growing masses. Imaging showed two intra-parenchymal left breast masses and one mass lying posterior to the left pectoralis major muscle, anterior to the chest wall. Diagnosed as phyllodes tumor. Nipple areola sparing mastectomy was performed with excision of the tumor and immediate reconstruction using a silicone implant, followed by radiotherapy. Conclusion Phyllodes tumor usually presents in patients between 35-55 years old as a single breast mass. Yet, in rare cases, multifocal disease can happen, and disease can present in younger ages. The sub-pectoral presentation of phyllodes tumor is not mentioned in the literature before this case.Introduction Zenker's diverticulum is an acquired mucosal pulsion of the upper esophagus. The aim of this paper is to report a case of Zenker's diverticulum with a complicated postoperative course including infection by Acinetobacter baumannii causing diagnostic as well as management dilemma. Case report A 43-year-old male complained from dysphagia for three months. Barium swallow revealed Zenker's diverticulum. Under general anesthesia, the small Zenker's diverticulum was ligated and myotomy was done. He developed erythematous swelling at the site of the operation. The patient was taken to the operation theater. The esophagus was tested, no trace of leak was found. The patient developed cardiac arrest. He was admitted to the intensive care unit and remained there for twenty eight days. Bronchial wash culture showed Acinetobacter baumannii. The patient was on antibiotic, supportive treatment and enteral feeding through nasogastric tube. After recovery he was extubated and barium swallow was done which was normal and showed no signs of leak. Three months after the operation, the patient was completely normal. Discussion This case had a positive culture for Acinetobacter baumannii. It is commonly accounted for nosocomial infections. It has been documented as a serious threat worldwide because of the emerging prevalence of multidrug resistant. However, an inadequate understanding of A. baumannii pathophysiology and ecosystem confines the progress of alternative therapeutic policies. In the current case, it was not clear either leak or Acinetobacter baumannii was the cause of deterioration. Conclusion Both esophageal leak and infection with Acinetobacter baumannii are fulminant debilitating conditions that could be managed with conservative strategies.Introduction Splenic rupture is often seen in the context of significant trauma. Splenic ruptures occurring in patients taking apixaban, a factor Xa inhibitor, are challenging due to the scarcity of a direct reversal agent. Presentation of case A 66 year old male presented with syncope and **** pain and was found to be haemodynamically unstable and tender in the left upper quadrant. There was no preceding trauma. He has a background of extensive major arterial reconstruction and was taking apixaban for atrial fibrillation. A diagnosis of splenic rupture was confirmed on cross sectional imaging. A laparotomy and splenectomy was necessitated as salvage therapy following splenic artery embolisation. He recovered well and was discharged home 6 days after laparotomy. Conclusion Definitive intervention is required for the management of splenic ruptures. A high level of clinical suspicion should be maintained in patients taking direct oral anticoagulants presenting with haemodynamic instability. Open splenectomy remains the most definitive option for treatment of atraumatic rupture in anticoagulated patients.Introduction Spinoglenoid cysts are a rare cause of suprascapular neuropathy of compressive etiology in which the patient may present with shoulder pain and muscle hypotrophy. MRIs are the imaging modality of choice showing location, size, and extent of the lesion for preoperative assessment. Currently, surgical intervention is the preferred approach for the management of a spinoglenoid cyst with arthroscopy being favored over the open technique. Case presentation A 25-year-old male patient presenting with right posterior shoulder pain and decreased range of motion associated with the development of progressive weakness of the supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscles. Right shoulder MRI showed a posterior tear of the glenoid labrum and a spinoglenoid ganglion cyst. Preoperative electroneuromyography was suggestive of a suprascapular nerve impairment. Follow-up Six months postoperatively, the patient has regained full range of motion of his right shoulder with no residue signs of muscle hypotrophy. Conclusion Spinoglenoid cysts can cause compressive neuropathy with associated pain and muscle hypotrophy. MRI and EMG can help in establishing the diagnosis and in the pre-operative assessment. MoJoXlab can be used with generic wearable IMUs that can provide clinicians accurate objective data when assessing patients' movement, even when changes are too small to be observed visually. Conclusions Medical records could be used more productively by constructing end-to-end models to facilitate TCM diagnosis. Objective The aim of this study was to explore the perception, experimentation, evaluation, and procurement of welfare technology practices among professionals working in municipal elder care in relation to their gender, age, and profession. Methods Data for this explorative cross-sectional study were collected from 393 responses to a web-based survey on municipal elder care in Sweden. Chi square tests were performed to determine the associations. Results The results revealed gender, age, and professional differences in perspectives of municipal elder care workers. Differences were particularly evident in attitudes toward technology, both the use of technology in general and in the workplace, and involvement and participation in decision making personnel's resistance to welfare technology and patients' participation in welfare technology usage and deployment. Different levels of participation in the decision-making process regarding new technology deployment may negatively affect the overall digital transformation within municipal elder care.Background Studies using Taiwan's National Health Insurance (NHI) claims data have expanded rapidly both in quantity and quality during the first decade following the first study published in 2000. However, some of these studies were criticized for being merely data-dredging studies rather than hypothesis-driven. In addition, the use of claims data without the explicit authorization from individual patients has incurred litigation. Objective This study aimed to investigate whether the research output during the second decade after the release of the NHI claims database continues growing, to explore how the emergence of open access mega journals (OAMJs) and lawsuit against the use of this database affect the research topics and publication volume and to discuss the underlying reasons. Methods PubMed was used to locate publications based on NHI claims data between 1996 and 2017. Concept extraction using MetaMap was employed to mine research topics from article titles. Research trends were analyzed from various aspects, including publication amount, journals, research topics and types, and cooperation between authors.

Contact impedance mapping can differentiate focal atrial tachyarrhythmias from macroreentry (atrial flutter) and localized reentry (atrioventricular nodal reentry tachycardia) by detecting different patterns of regional unipolar tissue impedance distribution. Specifically, focal atrial tachycardia (AT) is characterized by the finding of a contiguous low-impedance area (CLIA) adjacent to the site of origin, surrounded by normal tissue impedance levels. However, it remains unclear whether or not this finding could distinguish different mechanisms of focal AT. In the present study, we sought to determine whether impedance and voltage maps in patients with microreentrant AT differ from those created due to triggered activity. Consecutive patients undergoing electrophysiologic study and the ablation of AT were included. All patients underwent mapping and ablation procedures in a standard manner. Contact impedance and voltage maps were collected in the background and analyzed offline for comparison. A total of 50 patients with 75 focal ATs were studied and ablated, and the mechanism of AT (ie, triggered activity versus microreentry) was determined. The 41 ATs attributed to triggered activity in 30 patients all demonstrated a CLIA containing or adjacent to the successful ablation site, while the 34 ATs in the 20 patients attributed to microreentry demonstrated uniform impedance. Both lesions were treated surgically in the same setting. The patient improved after surgery, and postoperative imaging showed complete resection of the meningioma and absence of recurrence of the fistula at 4 years. Conclusion To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of concomitant surgical treatment of a meningioma and noncontiguous DAVF.Background One of the most serious and potentially life-threatening adverse events associated with anterior cervical spine surgery is postoperative hematoma with acute airway obstruction. The causes of unpredicted delayed bleeding are, however, not fully elucidated. Here, we report a case of delayed arterial bleeding and sudden airway obstruction following a two-level ACDF. Case description A 52-year-old male presented with the right paracentral disc herniations at the C4-C5 and C5-C6 levels. A two-level ACDF was performed. Notably, on the 5th postoperative day, the patient developed an acute respiratory distress due to a large right lateral retrotracheal hematoma requiring emergency evacuation at the bedside. This was followed by formal ligation of a branch of the right superior thyroid artery in the operating room. In addition, an emergency tracheotomy was performed. By postoperative day 15, the tracheotomy was removed, and the patient was neurologically intact. Conclusion A superior thyroid artery hemorrhage should be suspected if a patient develops delayed neck swelling with or without respiratory decompensation several days to weeks following an ACDF. Notably, these hematomas should be immediately recognized and treated (i.e., decompression starting at the bedside and completed in the operating room) to prevent catastrophic morbidity or mortality.Background Symptomatic cerebellar hemangioblastomas are extremely rare in pregnant women and the ideal management is not well established. In the present article, we aimed to report a case of large cerebellar hemangioblastoma complicated by pregnancy and managed successfully by surgical resection. In addition, we also discuss management options and review of the current literature pertaining to this pathology. Case description A 22-year-old female presented with a history of headache and vomiting for 4 weeks. She was carrying 28 weeks of pregnancy. She had left cerebellar signs, gait ataxia, and bilateral six nerve paresis. Fundus examination revealed bilateral papilledema. She was diagnosed to have large cerebellar hemangioblastoma with mass effect and obstructive hydrocephalus. She underwent suboccipital craniotomy and excision of lesion in lateral position. She recovered well postoperatively and delivered a healthy baby in the full term. Imaging at10- month follow-up demonstrates no residual lesion or another hemangioblastoma.
Contact impedance mapping can differentiate focal atrial tachyarrhythmias from macroreentry (atrial flutter) and localized reentry (atrioventricular nodal reentry tachycardia) by detecting different patterns of regional unipolar tissue impedance distribution. Specifically, focal atrial tachycardia (AT) is characterized by the finding of a contiguous low-impedance area (CLIA) adjacent to the site of origin, surrounded by normal tissue impedance levels. However, it remains unclear whether or not this finding could distinguish different mechanisms of focal AT. In the present study, we sought to determine whether impedance and voltage maps in patients with microreentrant AT differ from those created due to triggered activity. Consecutive patients undergoing electrophysiologic study and the ablation of AT were included. All patients underwent mapping and ablation procedures in a standard manner. Contact impedance and voltage maps were collected in the background and analyzed offline for comparison. A total of 50 patients with 75 focal ATs were studied and ablated, and the mechanism of AT (ie, triggered activity versus microreentry) was determined. The 41 ATs attributed to triggered activity in 30 patients all demonstrated a CLIA containing or adjacent to the successful ablation site, while the 34 ATs in the 20 patients attributed to microreentry demonstrated uniform impedance. Case description A 52-year-old male presented with the right paracentral disc herniations at the C4-C5 and C5-C6 levels. A two-level ACDF was performed. Notably, on the 5th postoperative day, the patient developed an acute respiratory distress due to a large right lateral retrotracheal hematoma requiring emergency evacuation at the bedside. This was followed by formal ligation of a branch of the right superior thyroid artery in the operating room. In addition, an emergency tracheotomy was performed. By postoperative day 15, the tracheotomy was removed, and the patient was neurologically intact. Conclusion A superior thyroid artery hemorrhage should be suspected if a patient develops delayed neck swelling with or without respiratory decompensation several days to weeks following an ACDF. It shows that the absorption capacity for DBU-glycerol is comparable with 30 wt % MEA, and the desorption ratio for CO2-loaded DBU-glycerol mixture can reach as high as 95% in 60 min, 363 K at the 31 molar ratio of DBU to glycerol, while it is only 68% even after 165 min for CO2-saturated 30 wt % MEA. DBU-glycerol solution has higher cycling CO2 loading than 30 wt % MEA. Its cyclic capacity could keep above 90% after 10 cycles of absorption-desorption experiments. The desorption reaction is irreversible at the initial stage, and the reaction rate is expected as a first-order reaction from 349 to 377 K, and the apparent activation energy is 68.94 kJ/mol. Moreover, the heat duty of the reboiler during regeneration is estimated to be reduced by about 27% when compared with 30 wt % MEA.The photothermoelectric (PTE) effect can effectively convert light into electricity through photothermal and thermoelectric processes and has great potential applications in light energy harvesting and bandgap-independent photodetection. It is particularly applicable for the terahertz (THz) range featuring low photon energy but has not been well established due to lack of high-performance PTE materials in this range. Three-dimensional microporous graphene (3DMG) foam possesses ultrahigh THz absorptivity and outstanding photothermal conversion and can serve as a promising candidate. Here, enhancement of the THz PTE response of 3DMG foam by fine-tuning its thermoelectric properties using the ionic liquid electric double layer (EDL) technique was demonstrated. Continuous and reversible control of the Seebeck coefficient of 3DMG highlights the effectiveness of EDL gating in manipulating the electronic structures of such bulk and porous material. An approximate 1 order of magnitude enhancement in the Seebeck coefficient as well as the PTE responsivity was observed. In addition, a double-cell 3DMG EDL device with a p-n junction like channel configuration enabled further improvement of the photoresponse. This work opens a new avenue to optimize the PTE performance of 2D nanosheet-assembled 3D porous materials for highly efficient energy harvesting and detection of THz radiation.

Bombyx mori-derived silk fibroin (SF) has recently gained interest for its intrinsic or engineered adhesive properties. In a previous study by our group, the mechanism of the protein's intrinsic adhesiveness to biological substrates such as leather has been hypothesized to rely on hydrogen bond formation between amino acid side chains of SF and the substrate. In this study, the serine side chains of SF were chemically functionalized with substituents with different hydrogen bonding abilities. The effect of these changes on adhesion to leather was investigated along with protein structural assessments. The results confirm our hypothesis that adhesive interactions are mediated by hydrogen bonds and indicate that the length and nature of the side chains are important for both adhesion and secondary structure formation.Growing stem cells on Earth is very challenging and limited to a few population doublings. The standard two-dimensional (2D) culture environment is an unnatural condition for cell growth. Therefore, culturing stem cells aboard the International Space Station (ISS) under a microgravity environment may provide a more natural three-dimensional environment for stem cell expansion and organ development. In this study, human-derived mesenchymal stem cells (****) grown in space were evaluated to determine their potential use for future clinical applications on Earth and during long-term spaceflight. **** were flown in Plate Habitats for transportation to the ISS. However, genomic insertion of miRNA target sequences into coxsackievirus A21 (CVA21) iRNA compromised its specific infectivity, negating further development as a novel oncolytic virus formulation. To address this limitation, we substituted a muscle-specific miRNA response element for the spacer region downstream of the internal ribosomal entry site in the 5' non-coding region of CVA21 iRNA, thereby preserving genome length while avoiding the disruption of known surrounding RNA structural elements. This new iRNA (R-CVA21) retained high specific infectivity, rapidly generating replicating miRNA-detargeted viruses following transfection in H1-HeLa cells. Further, in contrast with alternatively configured iRNAs that were tested in parallel, intratumoral administration of R-CVA21 generated a spreading oncolytic infection that was curative in treated animals without associated myotoxicity. Results The incidence of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality was higher in subjects with higher levels of NT-proBNP (all-cause mortality/cardiovascular mortality 35.4%/6% for NT-proBNP > 300 pg/ml; 16.2%/40% for NT-proBNP 125-300 pg/ml vs. 11.4%/4% for NT-proBNP ≤ 125 pg/ml. However, genomic insertion of miRNA target sequences into coxsackievirus A21 (CVA21) iRNA compromised its specific infectivity, negating further development as a novel oncolytic virus formulation. To address this limitation, we substituted a muscle-specific miRNA response element for the spacer region downstream of the internal ribosomal entry site in the 5' non-coding region of CVA21 iRNA, thereby preserving genome length while avoiding the disruption of known surrounding RNA structural elements. This new iRNA (R-CVA21) retained high specific infectivity, rapidly generating replicating miRNA-detargeted viruses following transfection in H1-HeLa cells. Further, in contrast with alternatively configured iRNAs that were tested in parallel, intratumoral administration of R-CVA21 generated a spreading oncolytic infection that was curative in treated animals without associated myotoxicity. Under future climate, we project substantial variations in alpha diversity and assemblage composition across the Eurasian river network, primarily occurring in northern and central regions, respectively. Conclusions We conclude that climate controls microbial functional gene diversity in streams at large spatial scales; therefore, the underlying ecosystem processes are highly sensitive to climate variations, especially at high latitudes. We subdivided the patient population attending our tertiary referral center according to 4 decision nodes type (deep infiltrating endometriosis or isolated endometrioma); stage (I-IV according to the revised American Society for Reproductive Medicine classification); predominant health problem (pain or infertility); and fertility potential of the couple (normal/abnormal screening fertility). We identified 9 classes, each corresponding to a suggested mode of treatment (medical, surgical or assisted reproductive technique) according to the most recent evidence published. This simplified scheme is designed to standardize treatment and is intended for use as a tool in diagnostic and therapeutic planning with a view to reduce inappropriate treatment.Opioid receptors are widely distributed in the central and peripheral nervous systems and non-neuronal tissues. Numerous researchers have noted the pivotal role of peripheral opioid receptors (PORs) in analgesia. Accumulating evidence has shown the existence of PORs in the trigeminal nerve system, indicating that PORs may be involved in the modulation of orofacial pain. In this review, we summarise the recent evidence for the role of PORs in orofacial pain and discuss the possible cellular mechanisms.Scope Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with amyloid beta peptide (Aβ25-35 ) accumulation in brains, which induces neurotoxicity and cognitive impairment. The effects of Ishige okamurae, an edible brown algae, on Aβ25-35 -induced cognitive impairment and neuronal toxicity is investigated. The aim of this study is to determine the molecular mechanisms responsible for I. okamurae extracts (IOE) mediating anti-AD effects. Methods and results Oral administration of IOE significantly attenuated Aβ25-35 -induced cognitive deficits, as estimated by Y-maze and Morris water maze tests. IOE also attenuated the Aβ25-35 -induced cellular apoptosis and expression of inducible isoforms of nitric oxide synthases (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in mouse brains and PC12 cells. In addition, Aβ25-35 -induced phosphorylation of ERK, p38 MAPK, and JNK in mouse brains and PC12 cells is significantly abolished by administration of IOE. In PC12 cells, pretreatment of signal inhibitors (PD98059 (MEK inhibitor), SB203580 (p38 MAPK inhibitor), and SP600125 (JNK inhibitor)) recovers Aβ25-35 -mediated cellular dysregulations to the same extent as does IOE pretreatment. The whole tubes with blood clots were fixed with formalin-acetic acid solution and cut into cross-sections, proceeded for H&E stained paraffin-embedded tissue sections (MAS sections, n=11; control sections, n= 11), and analyzed. As a separate effort, high-speed camera (FASTCAM Mini AX200, 100-mm Zeiss lens) was used to visualize the whole blood clogging pattern inside the chest tube cross-section view. Results Histology revealed a thin string-like fibrin deposition, which showed spiral eddy or aggregate within the blood clots in most sections of Group MAS, but not in those of the control group. Histology findings were compatible with high-speed camera views. The high-speed camera images showed a device-specific intraluminal blood "swirling" pattern. Conclusions Our findings suggest that a continuous spiral flow in blood within the chest tube (MAS vs. static control) contributes to the formation of a spiral string-like fibrin network during consumption of coagulation factors. As a result, the spiral flow may prevent formation of thick band-like fibrin deposits sticking to the inner tube surface and causing tube clogging, and thus may positively affect chest tube patency and drainage.A 70-year-old asymptomatic male who had undergone a right nephrectomy for renal pelvic cancer was referred to us with a thrombus in the ascending aorta detected by contrast-enhanced computed tomography after chemotherapy with gemcitabine/cisplatin. Transesophageal echocardiography revealed a 4-cm mobile mural thrombus in the ascending aorta. An emergency thoracotomy for planned aortic root replacement was performed, but the intraoperative epi-aortic ultrasound indicated that the thrombus had disappeared, and it showed prominent spontaneous-echo contrast (SEC) in the ascending aorta. Purpose The aim of this study was to compare the biomechanics of a four-strand hamstring graft with a tripled semitendinosus graft, with and without adjustable extra-cortical button fixation, in a cadaveric model. Methods Four groups of 10 cadaveric hamstrings were tested In group A, a tripled semitendinosus graft fixated with two adjustable extra-cortical buttons; in Group B, a four-strand semitendinosus and gracilis graft fixated with an adjustable extra-cortical button and a clamp; in group C, a tripled semitendinosus graft fixated to a steel hook and a clamp; in group D, a four-strand semitendinosus and gracilis graft fixated to a steel hook and a clamp. Each group was submitted to a cyclic loading test (1000 cycles between 50 and 250 Newton at a frequency of 0.5 hertz) and a load-to-failure test. Purpose The aim of this study was to compare the biomechanics of a four-strand hamstring graft with a tripled semitendinosus graft, with and without adjustable extra-cortical button fixation, in a cadaveric model. Methods Four groups of 10 cadaveric hamstrings were tested In group A, a tripled semitendinosus graft fixated with two adjustable extra-cortical buttons; in Group B, a four-strand semitendinosus and gracilis graft fixated with an adjustable extra-cortical button and a clamp; in group C, a tripled semitendinosus graft fixated to a steel hook and a clamp; in group D, a four-strand semitendinosus and gracilis graft fixated to a steel hook and a clamp. Each group was submitted to a cyclic loading test (1000 cycles between 50 and 250 Newton at a frequency of 0.5 hertz) and a load-to-failure test. Background Abnormal circadian blood pressure (BP) variations during sleep, specifically the non-dipping ( less then 10% fall in nocturnal BP) and reverse-dipping patterns (rise in nocturnal BP), have been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events and target organ damage. However, the relationship between abnormal sleep BP variations and cerebral small vessel disease markers is poorly established. This study aims to assess the association between non-dipping and reverse-dipping BP patterns with markers of silent cerebral small vessel disease. Methods and Results MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Databases were searched from inception through November 2019. Studies that reported the odds ratios (ORs) for cerebral small vessel disease markers in patients with non-dipping or reverse-dipping BP patterns were included. Effect estimates from the individual studies were extracted and combined using the random-effect, generic inverse variance method of DerSimonian and Laird. Twelve observational studies composed of 3497 patients were included in this analysis. The reverse-dipping compared with normal dipping BP pattern was associated with a higher prevalence of white matter hyperintensity with a pooled adjusted OR of 2.00 (95% CI, 1.13-2.37; I2=36%). Non-dipping BP pattern compared with normal dipping BP pattern was associated with higher prevalence of white matter hyperintensity and asymptomatic lacunar infarction, with pooled ORs of 1.38 (95% CI, 0.95-2.02; I2=52%) and 2.33 (95% CI, 1.30-4.18; I2=73%), respectively. Limiting to only studies with confounder-adjusted analysis resulted in a pooled OR of 1.38 (95% CI, 0.95-2.02; I2=52%) for white matter hyperintensity and 1.44 (95% CI, 0.97-2.13; I2=0%) for asymptomatic lacunar infarction. Deubiquitinase PSMD14/POH1 prevents IRF3 from autophagic degradation by cleaving the K27-linked poly-ubiquitin chains at lysine 313 on IRF3 to maintain its basal level and IRF3-mediated type I IFN activation. The autophagic degradation of IRF3 mediated by PSMD14 or CALCOCO2 ensures the precise control of IRF3 activity and fine-tunes the immune response against viral infection. Our study reveals the regulatory role of PSMD14 in balancing IRF3-centered IFN activation with immune suppression and provides insights into the crosstalk between selective autophagy and type I IFN signaling.

AgClxBr1-x composites with different halogen molar ratios (Cl/Br) were prepared by a facile ultrasound-assisted ion-exchange method. The formation of close contact between AgCl and AgBr facilitated the transportation of photoexcited charge carriers and contributed to the enhanced visible-light-driven photocatalytic degradation of different kinds of antibiotics. The AgClxBr1-x composites had a sphere-like morphology and tunable band gaps from 2.95 to 2.57 eV depending on Cl/Br mole ratios. Besides, the AgClxBr1-x composite was optimized by varying halogen mole ratios (Cl/Br) to achieve the highest photocatalytic activity. Results indicated that AgCl0.75Br0.25 showed the best photocatalytic degradation performance, which was about 2.36 and 2.78 times that of the single AgCl towards ciprofloxacin (CIP) and metronidazole (MNZ) degradation, respectively. Meanwhile, a possible photocatalytic degradation mechanism was discussed, and results indicated that the holes (h+) and •OH were the dominant active species in the AgCl0.75Br0.25 system.In this study, the toxic effects of potassium bromate (KBrO3) were tested on Allium cepa L. meristematic cells. In order to determine the toxic effect and dose relationship, KBrO3 toxicity was investigated at doses of 25, 50, and 100 mg/L. The toxic effects were evaluated by using cytogenetic, biochemical, anatomical, and physiological parameters, and serious damages were observed depending on the dose. Significant reductions in germination percentage, weight gain, and radicle length were observed in all KBrO3-treated groups compared with the control. Mitotic activity decreased in meristematic cells after KBrO3 application. and mitotic index was decreased by 1.8 times in 100 mg/L KBrO3-treated group compared with the control group. The frequencies of micronucleus and chromosomal abnormalities tested as cytogenetic parameters were significantly higher in the group treated with 100 mg/L KBrO3 than those in the control group. Fragment and sticky chromosome were the most common types of chromosomal abnormalities. Lipid peroxidation measured in terms of MDA content increased with increasing doses of KBrO3. The activities of catalase and superoxide dismutase as antioxidant enzymes were importantly changed in KBrO3-treated groups. Anatomical changes such as cell deformation, substance accumulation, cell wall thickening, and flattened nucleus were determined after KBrO3 application, and it was observed that these changes reached a maximum level at 100 mg/L dose of KBrO3. AgClxBr1-x composites with different halogen molar ratios (Cl/Br) were prepared by a facile ultrasound-assisted ion-exchange method. The formation of close contact between AgCl and AgBr facilitated the transportation of photoexcited charge carriers and contributed to the enhanced visible-light-driven photocatalytic degradation of different kinds of antibiotics. The AgClxBr1-x composites had a sphere-like morphology and tunable band gaps from 2.95 to 2.57 eV depending on Cl/Br mole ratios. Besides, the AgClxBr1-x composite was optimized by varying halogen mole ratios (Cl/Br) to achieve the highest photocatalytic activity. Results indicated that AgCl0.75Br0.25 showed the best photocatalytic degradation performance, which was about 2.36 and 2.78 times that of the single AgCl towards ciprofloxacin (CIP) and metronidazole (MNZ) degradation, respectively. Wood porosity is of great interest for basic research and applications. One aspect is the cell wall porosity at total dry state. When water is absorbed by wood, the uptake of water within the cell wall leads to a dimension change of the material. A hypothesis for possible structures that hold the water is induced cell wall porosity. Nitrogen and krypton physisorption as well as high pressure hydrogen sorption and thermoporosimetry were applied to softwood and hardwood (pine and beech) in dry and wet state for determining surface area and porosity. Physisorption is not able to detect pores or surface area within the cell wall. Krypton physisorption shows surface area up 5 times lower than nitrogen with higher accuracy. With high pressure sorption no inaccessible pore volumes were seen at higher pressures. Thermoporosimetry was not able to detect mesopores within the hygroscopic water sorption region. Physisorption has to be handled carefully regarding the differences between adsorptives. The absence of water-induced mesopores within the hygroscopic region raise doubts on existing water sorption theories that assume these pore dimensions. When using the term "cell wall porosity", it is important to distinguish between pores on the cell wall surface and pores that exist because of biological structure, as there are no water-induced mesopores present. The finding offers the possibility to renew wood-water-sorption theories because based on the presented results transport of water in the cell wall must be realized by structures lower than two 2 nm. Thus, we investigated in vitro antibacterial efficacy against H. pylori by agar diffusion assay. To determine the gastroprotective properties of phytoncide, we conducted hematoxylin and eosin staining, performed assays for the detection of the cytotoxin gene, and evaluated pro-inflammatory cytokine expression in H. pylori-infected C57BL/6 ****. Phytoncide significantly inhibited the survival of H. pylori in the gastrointestinal system of C57BL/6 ****. Reduction of gastric severity in H. pylori-infected **** was associated with reductions in the expression levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the gastric mucosa, and of the cytotoxin CagA gene in phytoncide treated groups (P less then 0.05 and P less then 0.01). Labelling of EVs is a commonly used technique for understanding their cellular targeting and biodistribution. A reliable fluorescent technique needs to preserve the size of EVs since changes in size may alter their uptake and biodistribution. Lipophilic fluorescent dye molecules such as the PKH family have been widely used for EV labelling. Here, the effect of PKH labelling on the size of EVs was systematically evaluated using nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA), which is a widely used technique for determining the size and concentration of nanoparticles. NTA analysis showed a size increase in all the PKH labelling conditions tested. As opposed to lipophilic dye molecules, no significant shift in the size of labelled EVs was detected with luminal binding dye molecules such as 5-(and-6)-carboxyfluorescein diacetate succinimidyl ester (CFDA-SE, hereinafter CFSE).
Wood porosity is of great interest for basic research and applications. One aspect is the cell wall porosity at total dry state. When water is absorbed by wood, the uptake of water within the cell wall leads to a dimension change of the material. A hypothesis for possible structures that hold the water is induced cell wall porosity. Nitrogen and krypton physisorption as well as high pressure hydrogen sorption and thermoporosimetry were applied to softwood and hardwood (pine and beech) in dry and wet state for determining surface area and porosity. Physisorption is not able to detect pores or surface area within the cell wall. Krypton physisorption shows surface area up 5 times lower than nitrogen with higher accuracy. With high pressure sorption no inaccessible pore volumes were seen at higher pressures. Thermoporosimetry was not able to detect mesopores within the hygroscopic water sorption region. Physisorption has to be handled carefully regarding the differences between adsorptives. The absence of water-induced mesopores within the hygroscopic region raise doubts on existing water sorption theories that assume these pore dimensions. When using the term "cell wall porosity", it is important to distinguish between pores on the cell wall surface and pores that exist because of biological structure, as there are no water-induced mesopores present. The finding offers the possibility to renew wood-water-sorption theories because based on the presented results transport of water in the cell wall must be realized by structures lower than two 2 nm. Nanoporous structures in wood at wet state should be investigated more intensively in future.For centuries, herbs have been used by traditional therapists around the world to treat gastrointestinal tract disorders, such as gastritis. We hypothesized that the anti-Helicobacter pylori properties of phytoncide, which is extracted from pinecone waste, would facilitate use as a natural gastroprotective product to treat gastrointestinal tract disorders. Thus, we investigated in vitro antibacterial efficacy against H. pylori by agar diffusion assay. To determine the gastroprotective properties of phytoncide, we conducted hematoxylin and eosin staining, performed assays for the detection of the cytotoxin gene, and evaluated pro-inflammatory cytokine expression in H. pylori-infected C57BL/6 mice. Phytoncide significantly inhibited the survival of H. pylori in the gastrointestinal system of C57BL/6 mice. Reduction of gastric severity in H. pylori-infected mice was associated with reductions in the expression levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the gastric mucosa, and of the cytotoxin CagA gene in phytoncide treated groups (P less then 0.05 and P less then 0.01). In conclusion, phytoncide significantly inhibited the growth of H. pylori in gastro tissue, possibly due to the abundant α-pinene present in the phytoncide as detected by HPLC analysis.
