It occurs in over 1 in 2000 pregnancies and affects 1500 families in the US annually. EPRA was historically considered universally fatal due to associated pulmonary hypoplasia and neonatal respiratory failure. There are several etiologies of fetal renal failure that result in EPRA including bilateral renal agenesis, cystic kidney disease, and lower urinary tract obstruction. Appropriate sonographic evaluation is required to arrive at the appropriate urogenital diagnosis and to identify additional anomalies that allude to a specific genetic diagnosis. Genetic evaluation variably includes karyotype, microarray, targeted gene testing, panels, or whole exome sequencing depending on presentation. Patients receiving a fetal diagnosis of EPRA should be offered management options of pregnancy termination or perinatal palliative care, with the option of serial amnioinfusion therapy offered on a research basis. Preliminary data from case reports demonstrate an association between serial amnioinfusion therapy and short-term postnatal survival of EPRA, with excellent respiratory function in the neonatal period. A multicenter trial, the renal anhydramnios fetal therapy (RAFT) trial, is underway. In most cases, VLs were easy to recognize, with numerous, large, round, well-defined vacuoles, but in three cases of LSDs, VLs were atypical. RESULTS Eight hundred five individuals were analyzed with ECS testing for 283 genetic conditions. Three hundred fifty-two carriers (43.7%) were identified with 503 pathogenic variants in 145 different genes. Seventeen of the 391 participating couples (4.34%) were identified as being at-risk couples. The most prevalent alleles found were associated with alpha thalassemia, cystic fibrosis, GJB2 nonsyndromic hearing loss, biotinidase deficiency, and familial Mediterranean fever. This study aims to investigate different aspects of health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) and psychosocial functioning in women with TS in order to establish new possible targets for therapy. DESIGN/PARTICIPANTS A comprehensive set of questionnaires (EQ-5D, PSS-10, CIS-20, Ferti-QoL, FSFI) was developed and used to capture different aspects of HR-QoL and psychosocial functioning in a large cohort of adult women with Turner syndrome. All consecutive women, ≥18 years, who visited the outpatient clinic of our tertiary centre were eligible for inclusion. RESULTS Of the eligible 201 women who were invited to participate, 177 women (age 34 ± 12 years, mean ± SD) completed at least one of the validated questionnaires (88%). © 2020 The Author(s).We describe adult males and females and a nymph belonging to Linguatula serrata in Australia, based on light and scanning electron microscopies. In addition, 18S and Cox1 sequence data have also been provided and were compared with similar sequences in GenBank. Our specimens had identical 18S sequences and limited genetic distance in Cox1 region which fell within the intra-specific range observed for Linguatula spp. suggesting that they all belong to one species. Phylogenetic analyses showed that Australian specimens were grouped with L. serrata in Europe where the species was first found and described. A number of L. serrata from Iran and Bangladesh formed a distinct group. The genetic distance between these Linguatula and Australian/European L. serrata ranged from 0.46% to 2.21% which is larger than the genetic distance observed between L. arctica and Australian/European L. serrata (0.12%) suggesting that they belong to a different species. As pointed out previously by several other authors, L. serrata comprises more than one species and those from the Palearctic region (including Iran and Bangladesh) should not be automatically named L. serrata unless there is enough evidence for the identification. To accurately address the complex taxonomy of Linguatula spp. a detailed morphological and genetic characterisation of numerous developmental stages of the parasite is necessary, to ensure morphological differences are not due to development. (buffalo) infections in cattle co-grazing with African buffalo have been reported in Kenya and schizonts were cultured from these infected cattle, raising questions regarding host specificity. A Corridor disease outbreak in 2013 on a ranch in South Africa where cattle co-grazed with Theileria parva and T. sp. (buffalo) infected buffalo presented the opportunity to investigate the possible carrier-state of T. sp. (buffalo) in cattle using real-time PCR analysis. Almost all buffalo (n = 19, 95%) were infected with T. sp. (buffalo) and showed CP values (22-20) indicative of high parasitemia similar to that observed for buffalo in endemic areas. Conversely, only ~14-27% cattle (n = 69, 100, 96) were positive with CP values (31-40) suggesting low parasitemia and a carrier state epidemiology different from African buffalo. Long term monitoring of T. sp. (buffalo) positive cattle showed that most cattle lost their parasitemia or presented fluctuating parasitemia around the PCR assay detection limit. A single splenectomized animal showed a persistent carrier state. The general trends and epidemiology observed in cattle infected with T. sp. (buffalo) are similar to that seen for buffalo-adapted T. parva, for which a defined carrier state in cattle has not yet been proven. The study suggests that cattle may be infected by T. sp. Therefore, the differential diagnosis is often difficult if they are not suspected. We report a case of AWP which was initially suspected to be pulmonary tuberculosis because of the chest HRCT findings centrilobular opacities distributed predominantly on the right lobe. On detailed review of the work history, however, the patient was found to be involved in welding. Prussian blue staining of the lung tissues and the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) ferritin analysis were useful for the final diagnosis and the appropriate treatment for AWP. The atypical lymphocytosis in BALF in this case suggested the involvement of HP in the pathogenesis due to the occupational sensitization to causal antigens. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of AWP showing features of HP. AWP should be noted even in patients with the typical patterns of centrilobular opacities on chest HRCT. Medical history, iron staining of lung tissues, and the BALF ferritin analysis would be useful for the diagnosis of these patients. The BALF findings are sometimes indeterminate for the diagnosis because the occupational sensitization to causal antigens might be involved in some cases of AWP. © 2020 The Authors.An 83-year-old man with a history of interstitial lung disease (ILD) presented with a 1-week history of progressive dyspnea. Computed tomography of the chest revealed right lung-predominant, diffuse, ground glass opacities superimposed upon reticular opacities. Despite methylprednisolone pulse therapy under a diagnosis of acute exacerbation (AE) of ILD, lung involvement and renal dysfunction worsened and disseminated intravascular coagulation developed. The patient died on day 5 of hospitalization. Pathological examination at autopsy revealed diffuse alveolar hemorrhage (DAH) superimposed upon organizing diffuse alveolar damage and usual interstitial pneumonia. We reached a final diagnosis of DAH-predominant AE of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Abundant expression of the oxidative stress marker hemeoxygenase-1 (HO-1) was observed in alveolar macrophages. These suggest that HO-1 expression in the lungs may offer a useful biomarker for this atypical histological subtype of AE of IPF. © 2020 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

[This corrects the article DOI 10.1371/journal.pone.0202450.].The genus Vitivirus in the family Betaflexiviridae includes eleven viruses known to infect grapevine grapevine vitiviruses A, B, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, L and M (GVA-GVM). Three of these viruses, GVA, GVB and GVD, have been associated with the etiology of rugose wood disease in grapevine and cause agronomically significant losses. The other vitiviruses were more recently discovered and their effects on grapevine are undetermined. To certify grape material for propagation as virus tested, an updated reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) assay to detect all known vitiviruses is desirable. To accomplish this, multiple grapevine vitivirus sequences were aligned at the amino acid level to search for conserved motifs. Two highly conserved motifs were found at an ideal distance for RT-PCR detection in the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase region of the replicase protein. The amino acid motifs were **** translated to create degenerate primers and used to successfully amplify all eleven grapevine vitiviruses. The RT-PCR primers were used to test a panel of vitivirus-infected vines for inclusivity as well as vines infected with closely related viruses in the Betaflexiviridae family (i.e. grapevine pinot gris virus and grapevine rupestris stem pitting-associated virus) for exclusivity. Broader use of these primers to detect vitiviruses in other plant hosts was investigated. In summary, an end-point RT-PCR assay that detects all the known grapevine vitiviruses and potentially other members of the genus Vitivirus has been developed. Improving health outcomes for Indigenous people by strengthening the cultural safety of care is a vital challenge for the health sector, both in Australia and internationally. Although Indigenous people have long requested to have Indigenous practitioners involved in their health care, many health services report difficulties with recruiting and retaining Indigenous staff. This article describes Indigenous workforce policies and strategies from two Australian health services, as well as cancer-service specific strategies.
Services were identified as part of a national study designed to identify and assess innovative services for Indigenous cancer patients and their families. In-depth interviews were conducted in a small number of identified services. The interviews from two services, which stood out as particularly high performing, were analysed through the lens of Indigenous health workforce.
Twenty-four hospital staff (Indigenous and non-Indigenous), five Indigenous people with cancer and three family own policies and programs to support building their Indigenous workforce.
These two cancer services and their affiliated hospitals show how positive patient outcomes and a strong Indigenous health workforce can be achieved when a health service has strong leadership, commits to an inclusive and enabling culture, facilitates two-way learning and develops specific support structures appropriate for Indigenous staff. It is hoped that the strategies captured in this study will be used by health services and cancer services to inform their own policies and programs to support building their Indigenous workforce.Social distancing, a non-pharmaceutical tactic aimed at reducing the spread of COVID-19, can arise because individuals voluntarily distance from others to avoid contracting the disease. [This corrects the article DOI 10.1371/journal.pone.0202450.].The genus Vitivirus in the family Betaflexiviridae includes eleven viruses known to infect grapevine grapevine vitiviruses A, B, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, L and M (GVA-GVM). Three of these viruses, GVA, GVB and GVD, have been associated with the etiology of rugose wood disease in grapevine and cause agronomically significant losses. The other vitiviruses were more recently discovered and their effects on grapevine are undetermined. To certify grape material for propagation as virus tested, an updated reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) assay to detect all known vitiviruses is desirable. To accomplish this, multiple grapevine vitivirus sequences were aligned at the amino acid level to search for conserved motifs. Two highly conserved motifs were found at an ideal distance for RT-PCR detection in the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase region of the replicase protein. The amino acid motifs were back translated to create degenerate primers and used to successfully amplify all eleven grapevine vitiviruses. The RT-PCR primers were used to test a panel of vitivirus-infected vines for inclusivity as well as vines infected with closely related viruses in the Betaflexiviridae family (i.e. grapevine pinot gris virus and grapevine rupestris stem pitting-associated virus) for exclusivity. Broader use of these primers to detect vitiviruses in other plant hosts was investigated. In summary, an end-point RT-PCR assay that detects all the known grapevine vitiviruses and potentially other members of the genus Vitivirus has been developed. Although changes in DNA methylation are related to mechanisms of long-term resistance, it is more likely that the methylation state of a series of proteins could be responsible for the first-line of defense of cancer cells against irradiation. In this study, we observed that irradiation of breast cancer cells was accompanied by an overproduction in S-adenosylmethionine, which increases the activity of cellular methylases. We found that by activating PRMT1, irradiation triggers a BRCA1-dependent program that results in efficient DNA repair and inhibition of apoptosis. Depletion of PRMT1 in irradiated cells resulted in a switch of BRCA1 functions from repair and survival in the nucleus to activation of cell death signals in the cytoplasm. We conclude that by modulating the cellular localization of BRCA1, PRMT1 is an important regulator of the oncogenic functions of BRCA1, contributing to the epigenetic defense of breast cancer cells against ionizing radiation.The use of a plastic stent (PS) in resectable patients with distal malignant biliary obstruction (DMBO) is uncommon due to the high failure rate of this method. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of a double-layer, large-diameter PS as a bridge to surgery compared with a conventional PS. This was a single-center retrospective cohort study. In total, 129 consecutive patients with DMBO underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy between January 2011 and March 2018. Fifty-five patients who preoperatively underwent plastic biliary drainage were enrolled. The patients were divided into two groups based on stent diameter a large-diameter plastic stent (LPS) group and a small-diameter plastic stent (SPS) group. The primary endpoint was the stent patency period, and the secondary endpoint was the medical cost. Thirty-six patients received SPSs; 19 patients received LPSs. The patency rate until surgery was significantly higher in the LPS group than in the SPS group (89.5% vs. 41.7%, P = 0.0006). Multivariate analysis revealed that LPS use was significantly associated with sufficient stent patency. The total cost of LPS use was significantly lower than that of SPS use. LPSs had longer patency and reduced medical costs than SPSs. Our results indicate that PfCRT transports peptides from the lumen of the parasite's digestive vacuole to the cytosol, thereby providing a source of amino acids for parasite metabolism and preventing osmotic stress of this organelle. Clinical encounters for children with CL/P undergoing operative procedures were identified, classified by location as "Team" versus "Community," and characterized by demographic, geographic, clinical, and procedural factors. A secondary evaluation reviewed concordance of team and community practices with an ACPA guideline related to coordination of care.
Three teams and 39 community providers performed a total of 3010 cleft-related procedures across 2070 encounters. Teams performed 69.7% of total volume and performed the majority of cleft procedures, including cleft lip repair, palate repair, alveolar bone grafting, and correction of velopharyngeal insufficiency. Community locations principally offered myringotomy and rhinoplasty. Team care was associated with higher guideline concordance.

Clinical practice guidelines recommend that cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) be managed with long-term anticoagulant therapy using warfarin or low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) for 3 to 12 months. However, oral factor Xa inhibitors may offer preferable alternative treatment options for these patients.
The primary objective was to determine the effectiveness and safety of rivaroxaban or apixaban compared with warfarin or enoxaparin as long-term anticoagulation therapy for patients with a new diagnosis of CVT.
This was a single-center retrospective review of patients with newly diagnosed CVT who received acute and maintenance anticoagulation treatment. Study groups compared patients who received warfarin, enoxaparin, or an oral factor Xa inhibitor as their maintenance anticoagulant. The primary outcome was recurrent thrombotic events while on anticoagulation. Secondary outcomes included modified Rankin Scale, improved cerebral venous sinus opacification, duration of anticoagulant therapy, bleeding eventl improvement in recovery among patients that received an oral factor Xa inhibitor.
Virtual scribe services (VSS) are a contemporary take on the in-person scribes utilized as a means to reduce administrative burden on physicians and enhance the physician-patient interaction. The purpose of this study was to determine whether VSS use could decrease the time an orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon spends on documentation without diminishing the patient experience as compared with traditional postencounter dictation (TD).
Fifty patients presenting for first-time visits with a single orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon were prospectively enrolled and randomized to VSS or TD prior to the physician-patient encounter. Time spent with the patient in the exam room and time spent documenting away from the patient were recorded. A postencounter survey assessed patient satisfaction, perception of physician empathy, understanding of the plan, and perception of the amount of time spent with the physician.
Of 50 patients enrolled, 25 were randomized to VSS. Retrospective cohort study.
Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) is used to achieve fusion in adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery. Our aim was to investigate the long-term impact of rhBMP-2 use for clinical outcomes and health care utilization in this patient population.
We conducted an analysis using MarketScan to identify health resource utilization of rhBMP-2 use for ASD after surgical intervention compared to fusion without rhBMP-2 at 24 months' follow-up. Outcomes assessed included length of stay, complications, pseudoarthrosis, reoperation, outpatient services, and health care payments.
Of 7115 patients who underwent surgery for ASD, 854 received rhBMP-2 and 6261 were operated upon without use of rhBMP-2. One month after discharge, the rhBMP-2 cohort had a nonsignificant trend in fewer complications (15.38%) than those who did not receive rhBMP-2 (18.07%),
= .0558. At 12 months, pseudoarthrosis was reported in 2.8% of cases with no BMP and 01.14% of cases with BMP,
= .0048. Average payments at 12 months were $120 138 for the rhBMP-2 group and $118 373 for the no rhBMP-2 group,

In ASD surgery, use of rhBMP-2 was not associated with increased complications or reoperations at index hospitalization and 1-month follow-up. Three teams and 39 community providers performed a total of 3010 cleft-related procedures across 2070 encounters. Teams performed 69.7% of total volume and performed the majority of cleft procedures, including cleft lip repair, palate repair, alveolar bone grafting, and correction of velopharyngeal insufficiency. Of 7115 patients who underwent surgery for ASD, 854 received rhBMP-2 and 6261 were operated upon without use of rhBMP-2. A model for calculating the probability of success was developed in which to input parity, placentation and amniotic fluid data. The model correctly classified 98.8% of successful technique and 74% of all women. Complications were very few and mostly mild. Of women who had success, 77% (163 of 212) had a vaginal birth. No differences between neonatal outcomes were found.

Improvement of the accessible surface of 3D GBMs where the interface exchanges are occurring is of great importance. A better control of the chemical mechanisms involved in the self-assembly mechanism itself at the nanometer scale is certainly the key for a future research breakthrough regarding 3D GBMs.

These metabolites not only serve as critical determinants of membrane structures, but also act as signaling molecules, as growth-regulating hormones, or as modulators of enzyme activities. Therefore, it is critical to understand the wiring of the biosynthetic pathways by which plants generate these distinct sterols, to allow their manipulation and to dissect their precise physiological roles. Here, we review the complexity and variation of the biosynthetic routes of the most abundant phytosterols and cholesterol in the green lineage and how different enzymes in these pathways are conserved and diverged from humans, yeast, and even bacteria. Many enzymatic steps show a deep evolutionary conservation, while others are executed by completely different enzymes. This has important implications for the use and specificity of available human and yeast sterol biosynthesis inhibitors in plants, and argues for the development of plant-tailored inhibitors of sterol biosynthesis.
We aimed to investigate the prognostic impact of the burden of new-onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF) on long-term cardiovascular outcomes in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI).
This retrospective analysis consecutively included patients without a documented atrial fibrillation (AF) history who admitted for AMI at Shanghai Tenth People's Hospital between February 2014 and March 2018. Atrial fibrillation burden was measured as the percentage of time spent in AF, and its optimal cut-off value of 10.87% was identified by X-tile software. Of 2399 patients (mean age 65.8 years, 76.6% of men), 278 (11.6%) developed NOAF during hospitalization. During a median follow-up of 2.7 years, the incidence of all-cause death was 3.19, 9.00, and 17.41 per 100 person-years in the sinus rhythm (SR), low-burden (AF burden ≤ 10.87%), and high-burden (AF burden > 10.87%) groups, respectively. After adjustment for confounders, it was the high-burden NOAF [hazard ratio (HR) 1.94, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.28-2.95] rather than the low-burden one (HR 1.47, 95% CI 0.97-2.21) that was significantly associated with increased mortality compared with SR. Concordant results were obtained in our propensity score-matched analyses [2.55 (1.57-4.16) and 1.32 (0.85-2.05) for high- and low-burden NOAF, respectively). In addition, post-myocardial infarction NOAF was associated with an increased risk of heart failure irrespective of its burden. Only those high-burden individuals were at heightened risk of ischaemic stroke. The restricted cubic spline curves illustrated a dose-response relationship of NOAF burden with outcomes.

We defined age- and sex-adapted SW criteria in a first cohort of younger (n = 97) and older (n = 110) individuals using a signal-to-noise ratio approach. We then used these age- and sex-specific criteria in an independent second cohort (n = 77, 38 younger and 39 older adults) to evaluate age and sex differences on SW density and SW characteristics. After adapting SW amplitude criteria, we showed maintenance of an age-related difference for SW density whereas the sex-related difference vanished. Indeed, older adults produced less SW compared with younger adults. Specifically, the adapted SW amplitude criteria increased the probability of occurrence of low amplitude SW ( less then 80 µV) for older men especially. Our results thereby confirm an age-related decline in SW generation rather than an artifact in the detection amplitude criteria. As for the SW characteristics, the age- and sex-adapted criteria display reproducible effects across the two independent cohorts suggesting a more reliable inventory of the SW.
Previous research has identified low socioeconomic status (SES) as an epidemiological risk factor for early retirement and disability pension (DP) due to mental disorders. This study aims to examine these associations in greater detail, with separate consideration of the risk factors for mood disorders (F30-39) and non-affective psychotic disorder (F20-29) DP.
In this case-control setting the subjects (N = 36879) were all those granted DP due to a mental disorder for the first time between 2010 and 2015 in Finland. All the subjects were matched with three controls for their gender, age and hospital district (N = 94388). Three measures of dimensions of SES were used education, income and occupational status, as well as family type as a control factor. Differences between DP recipients and controls, and between diagnostic groups, were studied using calculated characteristics and conditional logistic regression models.
DP recipients often lived alone and had low educational and income levels. These characteristics were more prominent in non-affective psychotic disorder than in mood disorder DP.

We then used these age- and sex-specific criteria in an independent second cohort (n = 77, 38 younger and 39 older adults) to evaluate age and sex differences on SW density and SW characteristics. After adapting SW amplitude criteria, we showed maintenance of an age-related difference for SW density whereas the sex-related difference vanished. Indeed, older adults produced less SW compared with younger adults. Specifically, the adapted SW amplitude criteria increased the probability of occurrence of low amplitude SW ( less then 80 µV) for older men especially. Individuals with Down syndrome are predisposed to a number of chronic health conditions, but the relationship between these conditions and cognitive ability is not clear. The primary objective of this systematic review is to assess this relationship by evaluating studies that measure cognitive performance in the context of Down syndrome-associated chronic health conditions.
A systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Studies included in this review (1) included children, adolescent, and young adult participants with Down syndrome and one or more co-occurring health conditions; (2) were quantitative; and (3) reported outcomes related to both chronic health conditions and cognitive performance. A set of predetermined chronic health conditions that are common in Down syndrome (e.g. sleep disorders, congenital heart disease, thyroid disease, seizure disorders, and pulmonary hypertension) were selected based on exhibit deficits in cognitive ability, particularly related to attention, executive function and verbal processing. These deficits may be further exacerbated by the presence of chronic health conditions, particularly sleep disorders. However, there is high false-positive rate associated with this modality, and its reduction can provide a diagnostic and economic benefit to both pediatric patients and health providers. Machine learning methods have the advantage of utilizing high-dimensional and complex features, which can be obtained from the patient's metabolic patterns and interrogated for clinically relevant knowledge. In this study, using TQ-MS screening data of more than 600,000 patients collected at the Newborn Screening Center of Shanghai Children's Hospital, we derived a dataset containing 256 PKU-suspected cases. We then developed a machine learning logistic regression analysis model with the aim to minimize false-positive rates in the results of the initial PKU test. The model attained a 95-100% sensitivity, the specificity was improved 53.14%, and positive predictive value increased from 19.14 to 32.16%. Our study shows that machine learning models may be used as a pediatric diagnosis aid tool to reduce the number of suspected cases and to help eliminate patient recall. Methodology One hundred and two children admitted and treated for bacterial meningitis were recruited prospectively along with 102 age- and sex-matched controls who had auditory evaluation using otoacoustic emission and auditory brain stem response tests 48 h prior to hospital discharge. This was also repeated at the follow-up clinic at 1 month after hospital discharge, irrespective of the initial hearing assessment results. Result There were 57 (55.9%) males and 45 (44.1%) females among the cases (mean age, 5.34 ± 4.40 years) and 55 (53.9%) males and 47 (46.1%) females among the controls (mean age, 5.31 ± 3.15 years). The prevalence of hearing loss was 30.4% among the cases, while it was 6.9% among the controls. The risk factors of hearing impairment in this study were the presence of anemia, leukocytosis, and hypoglycorrhachia. Association of Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM) with both recent vaccination and viral infections is well described in current literature. However, the coincidence of ADEM and bacterial infections has been rarely documented. In this report, we present a case of ADEM which occurred after bacterial meningoencephalitis and prior vaccination against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap).
A 62-year old woman was hospitalized with an upper respiratory tract infection three weeks after Tdap triple vaccination. A few days after admission, she became somnolent and developed meningism. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis revealed pleocytosis and increased protein/lactate levels compatible with bacterial meningoencephalitis. The patient was treated with intravenous antibacterial triple therapy in combination with dexamethasone leading to a significant improvement of clinical symptoms and improvement of CSF parameters. Five days later, the patient's condition worsened again, and she developed aphasia and right-sided hemiparesis. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan revealed distinct fluid-attenuated inversion recovery sequence (FLAIR)-hyperintense lesions in both hemispheres. Following brain biopsy, the diagnosis of ADEM was made and methylprednisolone pulse therapy was initiated for five days leading to a nearly complete remission of symptoms.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with a varying symptom burden, which ranges from completely unawareness to disabling conditions. The present cross-sectional study tried to assess if neuroticism is associated with a greater degree of perception of AF related symptoms.
162 patients who were considered for catheter ablation of AF were included. AF related symptom burden was quantified according to the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) score. Personality traits were assessed using the Big Five personality traits (5BT).
Female patients reported higher symptom burden. Higher EHRA scores were furthermore associated with treatment with antiarrhythmic agents, digitalis, direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC), and antidepressant treatment, as well as suffering from heart failure or chronic kidney disease. Neuroticism showed a positive correlation to AF related symptom burden with significantly higher neuroticism scores in patients with higher EHRA scores (Rho=0.41; 95%CI 0.26 to 0.53; p<.001), while no association was demonstrated for the other four personality traits.
