Quality appraisal will be conducted using the Cochrane's ROBINS-I tool, the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool, and the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist where appropriate. Results will be analysed by mapping findings onto the Theoretical Domains Framework and visualising characteristics of the included studies using EviAtlas. Conclusions The results of this study may facilitate the systematic development of behavioural interventions to increase adherence to social distancing measures.Introduction Cold storage of platelets is considered to contribute to lower risk of bacterial growth and to more efficient hemostatic capacity. For the optimization of storage strategies, it is required to further elucidate the influence of refrigeration on platelet integrity. This study focused on adenosine diphosphate (ADP)-related platelet responsiveness. Materials and Methods Platelets were prepared from apheresis-derived platelet concentrates or from peripheral whole blood, stored either at room temperature or at 4°C. ADP-induced aggregation was tested with light transmission. Activation markers, purinergic receptor expression, and P2Y12 receptor function were determined by flow cytometry. P2Y1 and P2X1 function was assessed by fluorescence assays, cyclic nucleotide concentrations by immunoassays, and vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein (VASP)-phosphorylation levels by Western blot analysis. Results In contrast to room temperature, ADP-induced aggregation was maintained under cold storage for 6 days, associated with elevated activation markers like fibrinogen binding or CD62P expression. Purinergic receptor expression was not essentially different, whereas P2Y1 function deteriorated rapidly at cold storage, but not P2Y12 activity. Inhibitory pathways of cold-stored platelets were characterized by reduced responses to nitric oxide and prostaglandin E1. Refrigeration of citrated whole blood also led to the attenuation of induced inhibition of platelet aggregation, detectable within 24 hours. Conclusion ADP responsiveness is preserved under cold storage for 6 days due to stable P2Y12 activity and concomitant disintegration of inhibitory pathways enabling a higher reactivity of stored platelets. Results Of the 266 eligible patients, 189 (71%) underwent testing; 51 (26.9%) tested positive and the results impacted management in 32 (16.9%) of tested patients. Patient undergoing testing were more likely to be younger than 40 years (30.9 vs. 18.2%), have had prior pregnancy loss (9.0 vs. 0%), or known family history of hypercoagulability (24.9 vs. 10.4%), and were less likely to have had provoked VTE (37 vs. 79.2%). The most common thrombophilias tested were antiphospholipid syndrome (60.1%), factor V Leiden (59.7%), and prothrombin gene mutation (57.5%). Direct costs of thrombophilia testing were $2,364.32 per patient, $12,331.55 to diagnose 1 positive, and $19,653.41 per patient-management affected. Conclusion We noted significant variability in selection of patients and panel of tests, sparse utilization of test results in patient management, but high cost associated with thrombophilia testing in patients with VTE. With guidelines advocating selective use of thrombophilia testing and attention to potential impact of test results in patient management, we propose the need for measures at institutional levels to improve test-ordering practices.

For chemotherapy induction and ovary destruction, cyclophosphamide was injected intraperitoneally to 40 female Wistar rats (weighing 180-200 gr, 10 wk old) for 14 days. In recent years, haze pollution has had a wide impact in China. This research systematically studies the influence mechanism of haze pollution from a new perspective of urban innovation efficiency. We use a generalised space two-stage least squares method to analyse the correlation between urban innovation efficiency and haze pollution. The periodic and regional influences of urban innovation efficiency on haze pollution is explored using a threshold regression model. Through the mediating effect model, we accurately identify the transmission mechanism of urban innovation efficiency affecting haze pollution. The results show a significant inverted 'U' relationship between improvement of urban innovation efficiency and haze pollution. The regional innovation activities of innovative cities differ greatly from those of non-innovative cities. The effect of innovation efficiency improvement in innovative cities on haze governance is better than that of non-innovative pilot cities. In eastern cities with a higher level of economic development, the improvement of innovation efficiency has a stronger impact on haze governance. Industrial structure and population agglomeration have a mediating effect on the impact of urban innovation efficiency on haze pollution, providing directions for the rational formulation and effective implementation of haze governance policies in China, as well as in other countries.A cyclic peptide containing one cysteine and five alternating tryptophan and arginine amino acids [(WR)5C] was synthesized using Fmoc/tBu solid-phase methodology. The ability of the synthesized cyclic peptide to produce gadolinium nanoparticles through an in situ one-pot mixing of an aqueous solution of GdCl3 with [(WR)5C] peptide solution was evaluated. This report provides insight about using a non-toxic MRI agent, gadolinium nanoparticles, for the delivery of various types of molecular cargos.Waste sorting is the cardinal measurement to solve the problem of low efficiency of rural environmental governance and to alleviate environmental pollution by reduction, recycling, and harmlessness in rural areas. However, non-excludable and non-rival features of public goods easily cause a wide free-rider problem, which results in a low frequency of participation in the waste sorting of rural people. Based on the theory of the utility maximization of the rational economic man, this paper investigates survey data of 688 farm households in three cities and three counties of Shaanxi Province to explore the effect of the perceived value on the household waste classification behavior based on cost-benefit analysis. The results show that perceived benefit and perceived cost are important perceived value factors affecting farmers' participation in waste sorting. Specifically, the spiritual benefit of the perceived benefit has a significantly positive impact on classification behavior, while the time cost, physical cost, and material cost of the perceived cost have a negative impact on waste classification behavior. Further study of the heterogeneity of income impact shows that time cost only has a significant impact on the high-income group of farmers' classification behavior, while spiritual benefit and learning cost only affect the low-income group of farmers' waste classification behavior. Material cost has different influence directions on high- and low-income groups. In view of the aforementioned findings, this study highlights corresponding policy implications from the perspective of perceived benefit and perceived cost.Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA), as a smart polymer, can be applied for drug delivery systems. This amorphous polymer can be exposed on a structural recovery process during the storage and transport of medicaments. For the physical aging times up to one year, the structural recovery for PNIPA was studied by advanced thermal analysis. The structural recovery process occurred during the storage of amorphous PNIPA below glass transition and could be monitored by the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The enthalpy relaxation (recovery) was observed as overshoot in change heat capacity at the glass transition region in the DSC during heating scan. The physical aging of PNIPA was studied isothermally at 400.15 K and also in the non-isothermal conditions. For the first time, the structural recovery process was analyzed in reference to absolute heat capacity and integral enthalpy in frame of their equilibrium solid and liquid PNIPA.PeptideWitch is a python-based web module that introduces several key graphical and technical improvements to the Scrappy software platform, which is designed for label-free quantitative shotgun proteomics analysis using normalised spectral abundance factors. The program inputs are low stringency protein identification lists output from peptide-to-spectrum matching search engines for 'control' and 'treated' samples. Through a combination of spectral count summation and inner joins, PeptideWitch processes low stringency data, and outputs high stringency data that are suitable for downstream quantitation. Data quality metrics are generated, and a series of statistical analyses and graphical representations are presented, aimed at defining and presenting the difference between the two sample proteomes.

Real materials are disordered. This disorder influences the properties of these materials and the chemical processes that occur at their interfaces. Gaining a molecular-level understanding of the underlying physical manifestations caused by disordered materials is crucial to unraveling and ultimately controlling the efficiency and performance of these materials in a range of energy-related devices. This understanding necessitates measurement techniques through which disorder can be detected, quantified, and monitored. However, such quantitative measurements are notoriously difficult, as effects often average out in ensemble measurements. In this work, we describe how a combination of electrochemical and spatially resolved surface spectroscopy measurements illuminate a molecular-level picture of disorder in materials. Using amorphous carbon as an intrinsically disordered material, we covalently attached a monolayer of ferrocene. Interfacial electron transfer across the amorphous carbon-ferrocene interface is highly sensitive to disruptions of order. By systematically varying linker properties and surface loadings, the influence of lateral interactions between nonuniformly distributed ferrocene headgroups on ensemble electrochemical measurements is demonstrated. Electrochemical and imaging data collectively indicate that conformational flexibility of the ferrocene moieties provides a mechanism to elude repulsive and unbalanced lateral interactions, while rigid linkages provide direct information about the underlying disorder of the material. This study is the first of its kind to quantify and visualize molecular disorder and heterogeneity with an experimental model accessed through ensemble measurements.Treating fibrous feed ingredients with exogenous feed enzymes may improve their utilization in monogastric animals. An in vitro study was conducted to determine the effects of steeping corn distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) or wheat middlings (WM) with exogenous feed enzymes. Four treatments were arranged as follows 1) co-product steeped with water (CON), 2) CON plus 0.5-g fiber degrading enzymes (FDE), 3) CON plus 0.5-g protease (PRO), and 4) CON plus 0.5-g FDE and 0.5 g PRO (FDEPRO). The FDE contained about 62,000, 37,000, and 8,000 U/g of xylanase, cellulase, and β-glucanase, respectively, whereas activities in PRO amounted to 2,500,000, 1,300,000, and 800,000 U/g of acid, alkaline, and neutral proteases, respectively. Briefly, 50 g of DDGS or WM samples (n = 8) were mixed with 500-mL water with or without enzymes and steeped for 0 to 72 h at 37 °C with continuous agitation. The pH, concentration of monosaccharides, and organic acids in the supernatant and apparent disappearance (AD) of fiber in h. In WM, enzymes increased (P = 0.007) AD of NDF relative to CON at 72 h. Nonetheless, greater (P less then 0.05) AD of fiber was observed between 48 and 72 h. In conclusion, although there were differences in responses among co-products, fiber degrading enzymes increased release of fermentable monosaccharides from co-products at 12 to 24 h of steeping and these effects were not extended with the addition of protease.Twenty stock-type horses (589 ± 126 kg BW; 13 ± 8 yr) were used in a completely randomized design for 28-d to evaluate the impact of a joint supplement on gait kinematics, inflammation, and cartilage metabolism. The identification of key therapeutic targets has resulted in several clinical trials evaluating pharmaceutical candidates to treat aneurysm progression. In this review, we focus on providing recent updates on developments in murine models of aortic aneurysm. In addition, we discuss recent studies of the various cellular and extracellular components of the aorta along with the abutting aortic structures that contribute to aneurysm development and progression.Gene sets, including protein complexes and signaling pathways, have proliferated greatly, in large part as a result of high-throughput biological data. Leveraging gene sets to gain insight into biological discovery requires computational methods for converting them into a useful form for available machine learning models. We present Set2Gaussian, a novel network-based gene set embedding approach, which represents each gene set as a multivariate Gaussian distribution rather than a single point in the low-dimensional space, according to the proximity of these genes in a protein-protein interaction network. We demonstrate that Set2Gaussian improves gene set member identification, accurately stratifies tumors, and finds concise gene sets for gene set enrichment analysis. We further show how Set2Gaussian allows us to identify a previously unknown clinical prognostic and predictive subnetwork around NEFM in sarcoma, which we validate in independent cohorts.
Real materials are disordered. This disorder influences the properties of these materials and the chemical processes that occur at their interfaces. Gaining a molecular-level understanding of the underlying physical manifestations caused by disordered materials is crucial to unraveling and ultimately controlling the efficiency and performance of these materials in a range of energy-related devices. This understanding necessitates measurement techniques through which disorder can be detected, quantified, and monitored. However, such quantitative measurements are notoriously difficult, as effects often average out in ensemble measurements. In this work, we describe how a combination of electrochemical and spatially resolved surface spectroscopy measurements illuminate a molecular-level picture of disorder in materials. Using amorphous carbon as an intrinsically disordered material, we covalently attached a monolayer of ferrocene. Interfacial electron transfer across the amorphous carbon-ferrocene interface is highly sensitive to disruptions of order. By systematically varying linker properties and surface loadings, the influence of lateral interactions between nonuniformly distributed ferrocene headgroups on ensemble electrochemical measurements is demonstrated. Electrochemical and imaging data collectively indicate that conformational flexibility of the ferrocene moieties provides a mechanism to elude repulsive and unbalanced lateral interactions, while rigid linkages provide direct information about the underlying disorder of the material. This study is the first of its kind to quantify and visualize molecular disorder and heterogeneity with an experimental model accessed through ensemble measurements.Treating fibrous feed ingredients with exogenous feed enzymes may improve their utilization in monogastric animals. An in vitro study was conducted to determine the effects of steeping corn distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) or wheat middlings (WM) with exogenous feed enzymes. Four treatments were arranged as follows 1) co-product steeped with water (CON), 2) CON plus 0.5-g fiber degrading enzymes (FDE), 3) CON plus 0.5-g protease (PRO), and 4) CON plus 0.5-g FDE and 0.5 g PRO (FDEPRO). We performed a prospective double-blind placebo controlled pilot study into the effect and safety of bosentan in BD patients. Disease activity was measured using the Behçet Disease Current Activity Form. The primary objective of the study was to determine whether bosentan is therapeutically effective in patients with BD. Secondary endpoints were safety, tapering of medication and the effect of bosentan on possible disease activity markers such as ET-1, circulating endothelial cells (CECs), soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL2R) and cytokine levels.
Ten patients were randomized to either bosentan or placebo. Overall, no effect on disease activity was observed, although one patient responded clinically and continued treatment after the study period. Despite one SAE, bosentan seems safe to use. We focus here on the emerging use of liquid Cu catalysts, which have high potential for fast and efficient industrial-scale production of high-quality graphene. The interface between graphene and liquid Cu is studied using force field and ab initio molecular dynamics, revealing a complete or partial embedding of finite-sized flakes. By analyzing flakes of different sizes, we find that the size-dependence of the embedding can be rationalized based on the energy cost of embedding vs bending the graphene flake. The embedding itself is driven by the formation of covalent bonds between the under-coordinated edge C atoms and the liquid Cu surface, which is accompanied by a significant charge transfer. In contrast, the central flake atoms are located around or slightly above 3 Å from the liquid Cu surface and exhibit weak van der Waals-bonding and **** lower charge transfer. The structural and electronic properties of the embedded state revealed in our work provide the atomic-scale information needed to develop effective models to explain the special growth observed in experiments where various interesting phenomena such as flake self-assembly and rotational alignment, high growth speeds, and low defect densities in the final graphene product have been observed.Triplet energy transfer (TET) from quantum dots (QDs) to molecular acceptors has received intense research interest because of its promising application as triplet sensitizers in photon up-conversion. Herein, TET from trap states in CdSe QDs to adsorbed 9-anthracene carboxylic acid (ACA) is studied with steady state photoluminescence, transient absorption spectroscopy, and time-resolved photoluminescence. We show that both band edge and trap excitons undergo direct Dexter energy transfer to form the triplet excited state of ACA. The rate of TET decreases from (0.340 ± 0.002) ns-1 to (0.124 ± 0.004) ns-1 for trap excitons with decreasing energy from 2.25 eV to 1.57 eV, while the TET rate from band edge excitons is 13-37 times faster than trapped excitons. Despite slightly higher TET quantum efficiency from band edge excitons (∼100%) than trapped excitons (∼95%), the overall TET process from CdSe to ACA is dominated by trapped excitons because of their larger relative populations. Our study indicates that CDDP inhibits 786-O cell proliferation and migration and HWG and RA protect against these effects. On the other hand, HWG and RA demonstrate a low cytotoxic effect in human renal proximal tubular epithelial cell line -2 (HK-2 cells). Cell cycle analysis found that HWG/CDDP and RA/CDDP combined treatment exerted cytotoxicity by inducing G2/M arrest and apoptosis. Both low vitamin D status and metabolic syndrome (MetS) are worldwide concerns, and low 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels are associated with MetS; however, related epidemiological evidence based on elderly Chinese individuals, especially those over 80 years of age, is limited. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the association between serum 25(OH)D and MetS in elderly Chinese individuals.
Serum 25(OH)D was measured in a cross-sectional sample of 2493 elderly people aged 65-112 years from eight areas of China in which the density of centenarians is exceptionally high. MetS was diagnosed according to blood pressure, lipid, and blood sugar levels; waist circumference; and body mass index (BMI). Adjusted multivariable logistic regression was used to analyze the associations between vitamin D and MetS based on different diagnostic criterias.
A total of 890 (35.7%) of the recruited elderly individuals had insufficient levels of vitamin D, and 1029 participants (41.3%) were vitamin D deficient. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the association between serum 25(OH)D and MetS in elderly Chinese individuals. Serum 25(OH)D was measured in a cross-sectional sample of 2493 elderly people aged 65-112 years from eight areas of China in which the density of centenarians is exceptionally high. MetS was diagnosed according to blood pressure, lipid, and blood sugar levels; waist circumference; and body mass index (BMI). Adjusted multivariable logistic regression was used to analyze the associations between vitamin D and MetS based on different diagnostic criterias. A total of 890 (35.7%) of the recruited elderly individuals had insufficient levels of vitamin D, and 1029 participants (41.3%) were vitamin D deficient. Thirteen healthy, recreationally active men (21 ± 2 yr) completed the study. Each 4-wk HIIT period included 40 min of treadmill training four times/week. Each training session included four 7-min intervals 4 min at 90%-95% heart rate maximum (HRmax) and 3 min at 70%-75% HRmax. Vascular (FMD) and cardiorespiratory fitness (maximal oxygen consumption [V̇o2max]) assessments were conducted before and following each 4-wk training period. Training resulted in significant improvements in V̇o2max (P less then 0.001). Training also improved FMD (P less then 0.001), with no differences betwspite considerable between-subject variability in FMD adaptation, individual FMD changes with the first HIIT period predicted FMD changes in the second period. Young people (ages 12-25) experience the highest risk of developing mental disorders; however, their uptake of and engagement with treatment is low. The study explored sociodemographic predictors of attendance and discontinuation of mental health services in a large, population-based sample.
Data were from the minimum data set collected from young people (ages 12-25) who attended headspace, Australia's National Youth Mental Health Foundation, from 2013 to 2017 (N=80,502). Data on key demographic and clinical variables and practitioner ratings of need for ongoing care were analyzed. Cox regression was used to examine the association between sociodemographic factors and rates of discontinuation based on practitioner-rated need for ongoing treatment.
The mean±SD number of sessions attended during the first episode of care was 4.6±4.4 sessions (median=3). Session-by-session discontinuation rates ranged from 14% to 19% across 10 sessions. The proportion discontinuing treatment before session 11 was 71.2%. Analysis of a subgroup (N=40,039) showed that 24% of those who discontinued treatment later returned to the same headspace center for a second episode of care. Those who were most at risk of discontinuation were older (ages 18-25), male, heterosexual, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, and living in a rural location.
Sociodemographic factors were found to be associated with treatment discontinuation, and some young people followed a pathway in and out of mental health treatment. Further exploration is needed to determine the appropriate length and type of care for specific sociodemographic groups and how best to tailor treatment accordingly.

Second, we analyzed the impact of AA6216 on TNF-α production by human alveolar macrophages collected from patients with IPF. Finally, we investigated the anti-fibrotic potency of AA6216 on bleomycin-induced lung fibrosis in ****. We found that AA6216 significantly inhibited TGF-β1 production by THP-1 cells. It also significantly suppressed TNF-α production by alveolar macrophages from patients with IPF. In recent years, the role of NLRP3 inflammasome in the pathophysiology of diabetic kidney diseases in both clinical and experimental studies has generated great interest. In the current review, we focused on and discussed the role of NLRP3 inflammasome in diabetic nephropathy. A literature review was performed using online databases namely, PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar and Web of science to explore the possible pharmacological interventions that blunt the NLRP3 inflammasome-caspase-1-IL-1β/IL-18 axis and shown to have a beneficial effect in diabetic kidney diseases. In the current review, we focused on and discussed the role of NLRP3 inflammasome in diabetic nephropathy. A literature review was performed using online databases namely, PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar and Web of science to explore the possible pharmacological interventions that blunt the NLRP3 inflammasome-caspase-1-IL-1β/IL-18 axis and shown to have a beneficial effect in diabetic kidney diseases. This review describes the inhibition of NLRP3 inflammasome activation as a promising therapeutic target for drug discovery in future.Leishmania infected macrophages have conditions to produce adenosine. Despite its known immunosuppressive effects, no studies have yet established whether adenosine alter Leishmania parasitic burden upon macrophage infection. This work aimed at investigating whether endogenous adenosine exerts an autocrine modulation of macrophage response towards Leishmania infection, identifying its origin and potential pharmacological targets for visceral leishmaniasis (VL), using THP-1 differentiated macrophages. Adenosine deaminase treatment of infected THP-1 cells reduced the parasitic burden (29.1 ± 2.2%, P less then 0.05). The qualified presumption of safety (QPS) was developed to provide a safety pre-assessment within EFSA for microorganisms. Strains belonging to QPS taxonomic units (TUs) still require an assessment based on a specific data package, but QPS status facilitates fast track evaluation. QPS TUs are unambiguously defined biological agents assessed for the body of knowledge, their safety and their end use. Safety concerns are, where possible, to be confirmed at strain or product level, and reflected as 'qualifications'. Qualifications need to be evaluated at strain level by the respective EFSA units. The lowest QPS TU is the species level for bacteria, yeasts and protists/algae, and the family for viruses. The QPS concept is also applicable to genetically modified microorganisms used for production purposes if the recipient strain qualifies for the QPS status, and if the genetic modification does not indicate a concern. Based on the actual body of knowledge and/or an ambiguous taxonomic position, the following TUs were excluded from the QPS assessment filamentous fungi, oomycetes, streptomycetes, Enterococcus faecium, Escherichia coli and bacteriophages. The list of QPS-recommended biological agents was reviewed and updated in the current opinion and therefore now becomes the valid list. For this update, reports on the safety of previously assessed microorganisms, including bacteria, yeasts and viruses (the latter only when used for plant protection purposes) were reviewed, following an Extensive Literature Search strategy. All TUs previously recommended for 2016 QPS list had their status reconfirmed as well as their qualifications. The TUs related to the new notifications received since the 2016 QPS opinion was periodically evaluated for QPS status in the Statements of the BIOHAZ Panel, and the QPS list was also periodically updated. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are effective for advanced renal-cell carcinoma (aRCC) but can increase costs. This study compares the efficacy, safety and cost-effectiveness of ICIs for newly diagnosed aRCC patients in the first-line setting.
Trials evaluating ICI regimens as first-line treatment for newly diagnosed aRCC were searched and included. A network meta-analysis (NMA) was conducted, and a cost-effectiveness analysis was performed from the US payer's perspective. The key outcomes were overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) in the NMA, and quality-adjusted life years (QALYs), costs and the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) in the cost-effectiveness analysis.
Four randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 3758 patients receiving first-line ICIs treatment were analyzed. The NMA showed that pembrolizumab plus axitinib was ranked higher than the other three ICI regimens and sunitinib in the overall population. Nivolumab plus ipilimumab and pembrolizumab plus axitive for PD-L1-negative aRCC due to its more favorable health advantages.There are questions surrounding the real-world effectiveness of chemotherapeutic treatments for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. This literature review compared the clinical characteristics and outcomes of available real-world evidence (RWE) for liposomal irinotecan in combination with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and leucovorin (LV), a treatment regimen indicated for patients with metastatic pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (mPDAC) who previously progressed on gemcitabine-based therapy. A targeted literature search was conducted in the PubMed Central® and Embase® databases to identify available RWE regarding patients with mPDAC receiving liposomal irinotecan published within the last 5 years (January 2014-September 2019). Data were extracted for prior lines of therapy, performance status, overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), duration of exposure, and adverse events. Six studies met inclusion criteria. A comparison of baseline patient characteristics and results with the included evidence reveals a clinically fragile, real-world patient population in terms of age (range 61-68), prior lines of therapy with 34-61% of patients receiving ⩾2 lines of lines of prior therapy and performance status [49.8-100% of patients with Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) 0-1]. Studies observed wide OS (range 5.3-9.4 months) and similar PFS (range 2.3-4.1 months), with two studies measuring duration of exposure (7.3 weeks, 3.1 months). Patients analyzed by RWE studies tended to be older with significant disease progression, poor performance status, and more heavily pretreated compared with the phase III registrational trial (NAPOLI-1). Despite this, patients treated with liposomal irinotecan + 5-FU/LV therapy had similar outcomes as those in NAPOLI-1.

Since bacterioplankton catalyze vital biogeochemical reactions and play important roles in aquatic ecosystems, more attention has been paid to their responses in dammed rivers. Here, a comparative study was conducted between single-dammed (the Yarlung Tsangpo River) and cascade-dammed (the Lancang River) rivers in Southwest China to investigate whether bacterioplankton respond equally to different river regulations. Our results showed that the decreased bacterioplankton abundance and the increased α-diversity always co-occurred in reservoirs of the Yarlung Tsangpo River and the Lancang River. However, the impact of damming on bacterioplankton abundance and α-diversity were resilient in the Lancang River, which can be attributed to the repeated alterations of environmental heterogeneity in cascade damming reaches. Meanwhile, a generalized additive model (GAM) was appn be predicted based on single stage damming effect, which can contribute to the protection of aquatic ecology in the cascade hydropower development.The fractionation of natural organic matter (NOM) and its impact on the binding of quinolones to mineral surfaces and transport behavior under flow-through conditions have been scarcely investigated. In this study, the sorption and transport of a widely used quinolone antibiotic, Nalidixic acid (NA), were investigated in goethite-coated sand (GCS) columns over a wide concentration range (5-50 mg/L) of Leonardite humic acid (LHA), a representative NOM. Simultaneous injection of NA and LHA in GCS columns mutually alter transport of each other, i.e. NA mobility and LHA molecular fractionation. Preloading of GCS column with LHA dramatically facilitated the transport behavior of NA, where nonspecific interactions with LHA-covered goethite surfaces controlled NA mobility. Simulations using a two-site nonequilibrium model showed that a modified sorption rate constant was required to accurately describe the breakthrough curves of NA under these conditions. This altered rate constant suggests that nonspecific interactions of NA on bound LHA may take place as an additional binding mechanism affecting adsorption kinetics. NOM fractionation alters sorption mechanisms and kinetics of quinolone antibiotics, which in turn affect their fractionation. The contribution by persistent free radicals and the arene network of ** have promoted the catalytic degradation of adsorbates via electron transfer mechanisms. The presence of surface functional groups and the redox activity of ** facilitates the bacterial degradation of estrogens. The sorptive removal of estrogens from aqueous systems has been minimally reviewed as a part of a collective evaluation of micropollutants. However, to the best of our knowledge, a critique focusing specifically and comprehensively on **-based removal of steroidal estrogens does not exist. The presented review is a critical assessment of the existing literature on ** based steroidal estrogen adsorption and attempts to converge the scattered knowledge regarding its mechanistic interpretations. Sorption studies using natural water matrices containing residue level concentrations, and dynamic sorption experiments can be identified as future research directions.Artificial redox mediators can be employed to improve the electron transfer efficiency during sludge methanogenesis, whereas these artificial redox mediators have possible deficiencies, such as high cost and non-biodegradability. For large-scale commercial applications, more cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternatives should be developed. Herein, the potential of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) as natural redox mediators to improve methanogenesis was investigated. Compared to the control test without EPS addition, the methane (CH4) production yield was increased by 83.5 ± 2.4% with an EPS dosage of 0.50 g/L and the lag phase duration was shortened by 45.6 ± 7.0%, along with the enhanced sludge dewaterability. Spectroelectrochemical measurements implied that EPS addition notably changed the intensities of different redox-active groups, which decreased the charge transfer resistance and enhanced the extracellular electron transfer efficiency. These redox-active groups were mainly from the solubilization and hydrolysis of sludge protein due to increased protease activities, thereby leading to a higher acetate concentration during the acidification step. Further investigation showed that EPS addition also improved the activities of both acetotrophic and hydrogenotrophic methanogens, as indicated by a higher abundance of alpha subunit of methyl coenzyme M reductase (mcrA) genes, enhancing CH4 production. This work provides an innovative strategy for improving sludge anaerobic digestion with efficient additives.
