Nowadays, increasing attention has been drawn to biological valorization of organic wastes. Wherein, propionic acid-rich fermentation (PARF) has become a focal point of research. The objective of this review is to make a thorough investigation on the potential of PARF production and give future outlook. By discussing the key factors affecting PARF including substrate types, pH, temperature, retention time, etc., and various improving methods to enhance PARF including different pretreatments, inoculation optimization and immobilization, a comprehensive summary on how to achieve PARF from organic waste is presented. Then, current application of PARF liquid is concluded, which is found to play an essential role in the efficient denitrification and phosphorus removal of wastewater and preparation of microbial lipids. Finally, the environmental performance of PARF production is reviewed through life cycle assessment studies, and environmentally sensitive sectors are summarized for process optimization, providing a reference for waste management in low carbon scenarios.Simultaneous nitrification/denitrification (SND) can efficiently deplete NH4+ by using air-exposed biocathode (AEB) in bioelectrochemical reactors. However, the fluctuation of wastewater adversely affects the functional biofilms and therefore the performance. In this work, four up-flow bioelectrochemical reactors (UBERs) with some novel inocula were investigated to improve domestic wastewater treatment. The UBERs exhibited favorable removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD, 95%), NH4+-N (99%), and total nitrogen (TN, 99%). The maximum of current (2.7 A/m3), power density (136 mW/m3) and coulombic efficiency (20.5%) were obtained. Cyclic voltammetry analysis showed all the electrodes were of diversified catalytic reactions. Illumina pyrosequencing showed the predominant Ignavibacterium, Thauera, Nitrosomonas, Geminicoccus and Nitrospira were in all electrodes, contributing functional biofilms performing SND, comammox, and bioelectrochemical reactions. FAPROTAX analysis confirmed twenty-one functional groups with obvious changes related to chemoheterotrophy, respiration/oxidation/denitrification of nitrite and nitrate. Comfortingly, such novel diversified consortia in UBERs enhance the microbial metabolisms to treat domestic wastewater.Chemically enhanced primary treatment (CEPT) is an emerging sewage treatment strategy due to its high efficiency and small land requirement. The results showed that AD granular sludge in R1 had anammox activity and could be cultured into anammox granular sludge. Adsorption, interception and domestication enhanced the biomass of anammox bacteria in R1, accelerating the start-up of the reactor. Firstly, SCB was pretreated using liquid hot water as the only reagent at 210 °C for a short time (0 min), and the solid liquid ratio (SLR) was 120 (w/v). Then, the whole slurry of pretreated SCB was enzymatically hydrolyzed and fermented for cellulosic ethanol in one-pot. The results indicated that the one-pot preparation for ethanol achieved a high total fermentable sugar conversion of 84.52 ± 1.24%, containing 88.61 ± 1.57% of glucose and 78.01 ± 1.63% of xylose. Moreover, the ethanol yield reached 257 ± 5.51 mg/g SCB, which was 77.56 ± 1.64% of the theoretical ethanol conversion from SCB. Importantly, there was no wastewater discharge in the whole process. Overall, the present work provides an economically feasible method for ethanol production.

We applied our method to two Pan-cancer transcriptomic study examples with single or multiple types of transcripts available. Targeted downstream analysis identified categories of biomarkers with unique functionality and regulatory relationships that motivate new hypothesis in Pan-cancer analysis.Long non-coding RNAs are diverse class of non-coding RNA molecules >200 base pairs of length having various functions like gene regulation, dosage compensation, epigenetic regulation. Dysregulation and genomic variations of several lncRNAs have been implicated in several diseases. Their tissue and developmental specific expression are contributing factors for them to be viable indicators of physiological states of the cells. Here we present an comprehensive review the molecular mechanisms and functions, state of the art experimental and computational pipelines and challenges involved in the identification and functional annotation of lncRNAs and their prospects as biomarkers. We also illustrate the application of co-expression networks on the TCGA-LIHC dataset for putative functional predictions of lncRNAs having a therapeutic potential in Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).Objective KCNT2 gene mutations had been described to cause developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs). In this study, we presented the detailed clinical features and genetic analysis of two unrelated patients carrying two de novo variants in KCNT2 and reviewed eight different cases available in publications. Methods Likely pathogenic variants were identified by whole exome sequencing; clinical data of the patients were retrospectively collected and analyzed. Results Our two unrelated patients were diagnosed with Ohtahara syndrome followed by infantile spasms (IS) and possibly the epilepsy of infancy with migrating focal seizures (EIMFS), respectively. They both manifested dysmorphic features with hirsute arms, thick hair, prominent eyebrows, long and thick eyelashes, a broad nasal tip, and short and smooth philtrum. In the eight patients reported previously, two was diagnosed with IS carrying a 'change-of-function' mutation and a gain-of-function mutation, respectively, two with EIMFS-like carrying a gain-of-function mutation and a loss-of-function mutation, respectively, one with EIMFS carrying a loss-of-function mutation, three with DEE without functional analysis. Among them, two patients with gain-of-function mutations both exhibited dysmorphic features and presented epilepsy phenotype, which was similar to our patients. Conclusion Overall, the most common phenotypes associated with KCNT2 mutation were IS and EIMFS. Epilepsy phenotype associated with gain- and loss-of-function mutations could overlap. Additional KCNT2 cases will help to make genotype-phenotype correlations clearer.
Presently, persons with diabetes are classified as having type 1 (T1D) or type 2 diabetes (T2D) based on clinical diagnosis. However, adult patients exhibit diverse clinical representations and this makes treatment approaches challenging to personalize. A recent Scandinavian study proposed a novel classification of adult diabetes into five clusters based on disease pathophysiology and risk of vascular complications. The current study aimed to characterize new subgroups of adult diabetes using this strategy in a defined population from northern Ukraine.
We analyzed 2,140 patients with established diabetes from the DOLCE study (
= 887 with new-onset diabetes and
= 1,253 with long duration). We used the k-means approach to perform clustering analyses using BMI, age at onset of diabetes, HbA

The conventional genetic screening for deafness involves 9-20 variants from four genes. This study expands screening to analyze the mutation types and frequency of hereditary deafness genes in Zhejiang, China, and explore the significance of in-depth deafness genetic screening in newborns.
This was a multi-centre study conducted in 5,120 newborns from 12 major hospitals in the East-West (including mountains and islands) of Zhejiang Province. Concurrent hearing and genetic screening was performed. For genetic testing, 159 variants of 22 genes were screened, including

A total of 4,893 newborns (95.57%) have passed the initial hearing screening, and 7 (0.14%) have failed in repeated screening. Of these, 446 (8.71%) newborns carried at least one genetic deafness-ass SLC26A4 c.919-2A > G, and m.1555A > G variants. The expanded genetic screening in the detection rate of diseasecausing variants was significantly improved. It is helpful in identifying high-risk children for follow-up intervention.

PURPOSE To analyze the clinical characteristics, management choices, and outcomes of cases of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcal aureus (MRSA) keratitis. DESIGN Retrospective interventional case series METHODS 52 culture-proven (52 eyes) cases of MRSA keratitis diagnosed and treated at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center were identified and reviewed. RESULTS Mean age was 66.6±19.2 years with median follow-up time of 147 days. The most prevalent risk factors included a history of ocular surgery (62.5%), topical corticosteroid use (35.4%), and dry eye syndrome (37.5%). There was a high burden of systemic disease (95.8%). Average presenting logMAR visual acuity was 1.7±0.8 and average final logMAR visual acuity was 1.2+1.0. Initial antibiotic treatment varied, with 20.8% receiving moxifloxacin alone, 20.8% fortified cefazolin and fortified tobramycin together, and 12.5% fortified vancomycin and fortified tobramycin, though other antibiotics were used during treatment if warranted. Surgical management was often required as 17.3% of eyes perforated 13.5% required tarsorrhaphy, 5.8% required penetrating keratoplasty, and 1 eye was enucleated. When patients treated with fourth-generation fluoroquinolones were compared to those treated with fortified vancomycin, no difference in final visual acuity, treatment duration, or need for surgery was found. CONCLUSIONS MRSA causes fulminant keratitis often requiring surgical management with poor visual acuity outcomes. Poor ocular surface, topical corticosteroid use, prior ocular surgery, and/or a high burden of systemic disease were identified as common risk factors. Patients treated with fluoroquinolones in our study had comparable outcomes to those treated with fortified vancomycin, however, those treated with fortified vancomycin tended to have more severe ulcers at presentation. DESIGN Retrospective cohort study METHODS National data on 2,162,191 subjects who underwent cataract surgery were collected from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment (HIRA) service database of health claims from 2009 to 2016. The HIRA database was used to identify potential risk factors for IOL dislocation, including age, sex, and various pre- and postoperative ophthalmic conditions. The hazard ratios (HRs) and confidence intervals (CIs) of these risk factors were assessed with a multivariable-adjusted Cox regression model. RESULTS IOL dislocation occurred in 15,170 patients (0.7%) in the cataract surgery cohort (2,162,191 patients). The incidence rate of IOL dislocation peaked at 40-50 years old, although the mean age of IOL dislocation was 65.25 ± 10.81 years. The average male/female ratio was 1.8. The adjusted HR for IOL dislocation in patients with partial vitrectomy was 11.93 (95% CI, 10.95-12.99; P less then .0001). Posterior capsulotomy performed within one year after the cataract surgery significantly decreased IOL dislocation, with an adjusted HR of 0.48 (95% CI, 0.44-0.51; P less then .0001). CONCLUSIONS IOL dislocation tended to occur in young males. Anterior vitrectomy was a significant risk factor for IOL dislocation, while posterior capsulotomy after surgery was associated with a decreased risk of IOL dislocation. DESIGN Retrospective cross-sectional study. PURPOSE To analyze the clinical characteristics, management choices, and outcomes of cases of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcal aureus (MRSA) keratitis. DESIGN Retrospective interventional case series METHODS 52 culture-proven (52 eyes) cases of MRSA keratitis diagnosed and treated at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center were identified and reviewed. RESULTS Mean age was 66.6±19.2 years with median follow-up time of 147 days. The most prevalent risk factors included a history of ocular surgery (62.5%), topical corticosteroid use (35.4%), and dry eye syndrome (37.5%). There was a high burden of systemic disease (95.8%). Average presenting logMAR visual acuity was 1.7±0.8 and average final logMAR visual acuity was 1.2+1.0. Initial antibiotic treatment varied, with 20.8% receiving moxifloxacin alone, 20.8% fortified cefazolin and fortified tobramycin together, and 12.5% fortified vancomycin and fortified tobramycin, though other antibiotics were used during treatment if warranted. Surgical management was often required as 17.3% of eyes perforated 13.5% required tarsorrhaphy, 5.8% required penetrating keratoplasty, and 1 eye was enucleated. When patients treated with fourth-generation fluoroquinolones were compared to those treated with fortified vancomycin, no difference in final visual acuity, treatment duration, or need for surgery was found. CONCLUSIONS MRSA causes fulminant keratitis often requiring surgical management with poor visual acuity outcomes. Poor ocular surface, topical corticosteroid use, prior ocular surgery, and/or a high burden of systemic disease were identified as common risk factors. DESIGN Retrospective cohort study METHODS National data on 2,162,191 subjects who underwent cataract surgery were collected from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment (HIRA) service database of health claims from 2009 to 2016. The HIRA database was used to identify potential risk factors for IOL dislocation, including age, sex, and various pre- and postoperative ophthalmic conditions. The hazard ratios (HRs) and confidence intervals (CIs) of these risk factors were assessed with a multivariable-adjusted Cox regression model. RESULTS IOL dislocation occurred in 15,170 patients (0.7%) in the cataract surgery cohort (2,162,191 patients). The incidence rate of IOL dislocation peaked at 40-50 years old, although the mean age of IOL dislocation was 65.25 ± 10.81 years. The average male/female ratio was 1.8. The adjusted HR for IOL dislocation in patients with partial vitrectomy was 11.93 (95% CI, 10.95-12.99; P less then .0001). Whilst interpretation bias may be present in chronic pain, it also appears to indicate better glycemic control in individuals with T2D. These findings suggest a more dynamic approach to understanding cognitive bias is needed, to consider when these biases are more or less adaptive, so that they can be better harnessed to improve outcomes for individuals with T2D who experience chronic pain. PERSPECTIVE These findings suggest that cognitive biases can be associated with psychopathology in chronic pain and in T2D, but can also potentially be adaptive in those with T2D. Articles were reviewed for key words that focused on underrepresented ethnic/race groups with chronic musculoskeletal pain applying health factor terms identified in the NIAHealth Disparity Research Framework four levels of analysis 1) environmental, 2) sociocultural, 3) behavioral, and 4) biological. A total of 52 articles met inclusion criteria. There were limited publications specific to underrepresented ethnic/race groups with chronic musculoskeletal pain across all levels with particular research gaps under sociocultural and biological categories. Current limitations in evidence may be supplemented by a foundation of findings specific to the broader topic of "chronic pain" which provides guidance for future investigations. Study designs including a focus on protective factors and multiple levels of analyses would be particularly meritorious. PERSPECTIVE Chronic musculoskeletal pain unequally burdens underrepresented ethnic/race groups. In order to move research forward and to systematically investigate the complex array of factors contributing toward health disparities, an organized approach is necessary. Here, we show that a viroporin consisting of the influenza A matrix-2 (M2) protein, is activated by low pH and has proton channel activity in E. coli. The heterologous expression of the M2 protein in E. coli resulted in a significant increase in the intracellular pH and cell viability in the presence of various weak acids with different lengths of carbon chains. In addition, the feasibility of developing a robust and efficient E. coli-based whole-cell biocatalyst via introduction of the proton-selective viroporin was explored by employing (Z)-11-(heptanolyoxy)undec-9-enoic acid (ester) and 2-fucosyllactose (2'-FL) as model products, whose production is hampered by cytosolic acidification. The engineered E. coli strains containing the proton-selective viroporin exhibited approximately 80% and 230% higher concentrations of the ester and 2'-FL, respectively, than the control strains without the M2 protein. The simple and powerful strategy developed in this study can be applied to produce other valuable chemicals whose production involves substrates and/or products that cause cytosolic acidification.
Hematoma is a complication of cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) procedures and may lead to device infection. The TYRX antibacterial envelope reduced major CIED infection by 40% in the randomized WRAP-IT (World-wide Randomized Antibiotic Envelope Infection Prevention Trial) study, but its effectiveness in the presence of hematoma is not well understood.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence and infectious consequences of hematoma and the association between envelope use, hematomas, and major CIED infection among WRAP-IT patients.
All 6800 study patients were included in this analysis (control 3429; envelope 3371). Hematomas occurring within 30 days postprocedure (acute) were characterized and grouped by study treatment and evaluated for subsequent infection risk. Data were analyzed using Cox proportional hazard regression modeling.
Acute hematoma incidence was 2.2% at 30 days, with no significant difference between treatment groups (envelope vs control hazard ratio [HR] 1.15; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.84-1.58; P = .39). Data regarding uterine artery embolization (UAE) to specifically treat anticoagulant-associated iatrogenic abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB-I) are sparse. This manuscript aimed to quantify the effectiveness of UAE in treating this subset of patients.

Venous thromboembolic disease was the most common (92%) indication for anticoagulation.

The differentially expressed RBPs-encoding genes (DERs) and differentially expressed DERs-associated genes (DEDs) were screened to undergo GO and KEGG analysis. Results 18 DERs and DEDs were identified in the PTM vs. PM, 87 in the TM vs. PTM, and 87 in the TM vs. PM. Those DERs and DEDs participated in the regulation of gene expression at the levels of chromatin conformation, gene activation and silencing, splicing and degradation of mRNA, biogenesis of piRNA and miRNA, ribosome assemble, and translation of proteins. Conclusion The genes encoding RBPs and the relevant genes are involved in the transformation from PM to PTM, then constructing the TM by regulating protein synthesis. This regulation included whole process of biological genetic information transmission from chromatin conformation to gene activation and silencing to mRNA splicing to ribosome assemble to translation of proteins and degradation of mRNA. The treatment of B. pseudomallei infection is hampered by resistance to a wide range of antimicrobial agents and no vaccine is currently available. At present, the underlying mechanisms of B. pseudomallei pathogenesis are poorly understood. In our previous study, we reported that a B. pseudomallei short-chain dehydrogenase (SDO; BPSS2242) mutant constructed by deletion mutagenesis showed reduced B. pseudomallei invasion and initial intracellular survival. This indicated that SDO is associated with the pathogenesis of melioidosis. In the present study, the role of B. pseudomallei SDO was further investigated using the SDO deletion mutant by a proteomic approach. The protein profiles of the SDO mutant and wild-type K96243 were investigated through gel-based proteomic analysis. Quantitative intensity analysis of three individual cultures of the B. pseudomallei SDO mutant revealed significant down-regulation of five protein spots compared with the wild-type. Q-TOF MS/MS identified the protein spots as a glutamate/aspartate ABC transporter, prolyl-tRNA synthetase, Hsp70 family protein, quinone oxidoreductase and a putative carboxypeptidase. Functional assays were performed to investigate the role of these differentially expressed proteins in adhesion to host cells, biofilm induction and survival under heat stress conditions. The SDO deletion mutant showed a decreased ability to adhere to host cells. Moreover, biofilm formation and the survival rate of bacteria under heat stress conditions were also reduced in the mutant strain. Strong heterogeneity in AD signatures among the five brain regions was observed HC/PC/SFG showed clear and pronounced AD signatures, MTG moderately so, and EC showed essentially none. Results 18 DERs and DEDs were identified in the PTM vs. PM, 87 in the TM vs. PTM, and 87 in the TM vs. PM. Those DERs and DEDs participated in the regulation of gene expression at the levels of chromatin conformation, gene activation and silencing, splicing and degradation of mRNA, biogenesis of piRNA and miRNA, ribosome assemble, and translation of proteins. Conclusion The genes encoding RBPs and the relevant genes are involved in the transformation from PM to PTM, then constructing the TM by regulating protein synthesis. The treatment of B. pseudomallei infection is hampered by resistance to a wide range of antimicrobial agents and no vaccine is currently available. At present, the underlying mechanisms of B. pseudomallei pathogenesis are poorly understood. In our previous study, we reported that a B. pseudomallei short-chain dehydrogenase (SDO; BPSS2242) mutant constructed by deletion mutagenesis showed reduced B. pseudomallei invasion and initial intracellular survival. This indicated that SDO is associated with the pathogenesis of melioidosis. In the present study, the role of B. pseudomallei SDO was further investigated using the SDO deletion mutant by a proteomic approach. The protein profiles of the SDO mutant and wild-type K96243 were investigated through gel-based proteomic analysis. Quantitative intensity analysis of three individual cultures of the B. pseudomallei SDO mutant revealed significant down-regulation of five protein spots compared with the wild-type. Q-TOF MS/MS identified the protein spots as a glutamate/aspartate ABC transporter, prolyl-tRNA synthetase, Hsp70 family protein, quinone oxidoreductase and a putative carboxypeptidase. Functional assays were performed to investigate the role of these differentially expressed proteins in adhesion to host cells, biofilm induction and survival under heat stress conditions. The SDO deletion mutant showed a decreased ability to adhere to host cells. Moreover, biofilm formation and the survival rate of bacteria under heat stress conditions were also reduced in the mutant strain. To validate this, we tested several measures of fractal dimension on the brain activity from healthy volunteers and patients with disorders of consciousness of varying severity. We used a Compact Box Burning algorithm to compute the fractal dimension of cortical functional connectivity networks as well as computing the fractal dimension of the associated adjacency matrices using a 2D box-counting algorithm. To test whether brain activity is fractal in time as well as space, we used the Higuchi temporal fractal dimension on BOLD time-series. We found significant decreases in the fractal dimension between healthy volunteers (n = 15), patients in a minimally conscious state (n = 10), and patients in a vegetative state (n = 8), regardless of the mechanism of injury. We also found significant decreases in adjacency matrix fractal dimension and Higuchi temporal fractal dimension, which correlated with decreasing level of consciousness. These results suggest that cortical functional connectivity networks display fractal character and that this is associated with level of consciousness in a clinically relevant population, with higher fractal dimensions (i.e. more complex) networks being associated with higher levels of consciousness. We also found that while intrinsic motivation benefitted task acquisition it was not a modulator of sleep-wake differences in memory processing. In addition, a network meta-analysis evaluated regimens that had noent completion rates than shorter rifamycin-based regimens.In summary, short-course (3- to 4-month) rifamycin-based treatment regimens are preferred over longer-course (6-9 month) isoniazid monotherapy for treatment of LTBI. These updated guidelines can be used by clinicians, public health officials, policymakers, health care organizations, and other state and local stakeholders who might need to adapt them to fit individual clinical circumstances.

As important components of plant cells, lipids are involved in various biological functions. However, the composition and content of lipids in cell membranes changes at low temperature resulting in chilling injury and affecting the commercial value of green peppers. Detecting the changes in lipids helps to understand the mechanism of low-temperature stress in green peppers; however, a comprehensive study of lipid profiles in green pepper has not been well documented.
Herein, we report an ultra-performance liquid chromatography/quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC/QTOF MS) method to determine phospholipids and glycolipids in green peppers and compare five extraction methods among which the isopropanol/chloroform/water (ICW) method demonstrated the best extraction efficiency. The established method was used to determine the membrane lipids of fresh samples, chilled samples(4°C-20d), and control samples (10°C-20d).
A total of 98 lipids, including 77 phospholipids and 21 glycolipids, were extracted from green peppers using ICW extraction. The content and profile of phosphatidylcholine (PC) among phospholipids were found to be the highest, accounting for 58.58% of all the phospholipids. The monogalactosyldiacylglycerol (MGDG) content among the glycolipids was the highest, accounting for 1.43%. The samples stored at low temperature (4°C, 20d) had a significantly higher PC content and a higher content of lipids containing unsaturated fatty acid residues as compared with the control samples (10°C, 20d). The recovery ranged from 75.55% to 96.64% while the limit of quantification ranged from 10 to 1000 ng mL

Clumped isotope geochemistry examines the pairing or clumping of heavy isotopes in molecules and provides information about the thermodynamic and kinetic controls on their formation. The first clumped isotope measurements of carbonate minerals were first published 15 years ago, and since then, interlaboratory offsets have been observed, and laboratory and community practices for measurement, data analysis, and instrumentation have evolved. Here we briefly review historical and recent developments for measurements, share Tripati Lab practices for four different instrument configurations, test a recently published proposal for carbonate-based standardization on multiple instruments using multi-year data sets, and report values for 21 different carbonate standards that allow for recalculations of previously published data sets.
We examine data from 4628 standard measurements on Thermo MAT 253 and Nu Perspective IS mass spectrometers, using a common acid bath (90°C) and small-sample (70°C) individual reactionn of data from a diversity of labs and instrument configurations and restandardization of a broad range of sample sets between 2006, when the first carbonate measurements were published, and the present.
We show that all configurations yield similar results if instrument drift is robustly characterized and validate a recent proposal for carbonate-based standardization using large multiyear data sets. However, such continued adaptations can create turbulence for the care sectors in question. In this article, we examine the large-scale reform of the Australia National Disability Insurance Scheme and the impact of a series of adaptations on the disability care sector in Australia. We find that the disability sector in Australia is experiencing turbulence and a lack of clarity about the rules regarding the programme, resulting in increased administrative burden and financial pressures. Such turbulence has flow-on effects on the level of care that is able to be accessed by people with disability in Australia.
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a lethal recessive genetic disease caused by loss of function associated with mutations in the CF trans-membrane conductance regulator (CFTR). CF is highly prevalent (approximately 1 in 3500) in Caucasians. The aim of this study was to compare demographic and clinical features, diagnostic tests, treatments, and complications of patients with CF whose newborn screening (NBS) with twice-repeated immune reactive trypsinogen (IRT/IRT) testing was positive, normal, and not performed.
In this study, 359 of all 1,488 CF patients recorded in the CF Registry of Turkey in 2018, who had been born through the process of NBS, were evaluated. Demographic and clinical features were compared in patients diagnosed with positive NBS (Group 1), normal (Group 2), or without NBS (Group 3).
In Group 1, there were 299 patients, in Group 2, there were 40 patients, and in Group 3, there were 20 patients. Clumped isotope geochemistry examines the pairing or clumping of heavy isotopes in molecules and provides information about the thermodynamic and kinetic controls on their formation. The first clumped isotope measurements of carbonate minerals were first published 15 years ago, and since then, interlaboratory offsets have been observed, and laboratory and community practices for measurement, data analysis, and instrumentation have evolved. Here we briefly review historical and recent developments for measurements, share Tripati Lab practices for four different instrument configurations, test a recently published proposal for carbonate-based standardization on multiple instruments using multi-year data sets, and report values for 21 different carbonate standards that allow for recalculations of previously published data sets. We examine data from 4628 standard measurements on Thermo MAT 253 and Nu Perspective IS mass spectrometers, using a common acid bath (90°C) and small-sample (70°C) individual reactionn of data from a diversity of labs and instrument configurations and restandardization of a broad range of sample sets between 2006, when the first carbonate measurements were published, and the present. We show that all configurations yield similar results if instrument drift is robustly characterized and validate a recent proposal for carbonate-based standardization using large multiyear data sets. Inclusion criteria were randomized controlled trials, prospective cohort studies, retrospective trials, and therapeutic case series.
