Renal angiomyolipomas (AMLs) were first described in the early 1900s by Gravitz, but it was not until 1951 that they were named renal AML. These kidney tumours are rare, occurring in 0.13%-0.44% of the population. These mesenchymal tumours are composed of smooth muscle-like, adipocyte-like and epithelioid cells. Depending on the predominant cell population, it can be further subclassified into classic, epithelioid and AML with epithelial cyst. A 32-year-old woman presented with mild, intermittent, epigastric and right upper quadrant abdominal pain. Abdominal ultrasound revealed an incidental lesion within the inferior vena cava (IVC). A CT scan showed a lesion within the left renal vein extending into the IVC with 40% narrowing and a fat-containing mass in the lower pole of the left kidney of 15 mm suggesting an AML. Thrombectomy was performed. The specimen resulted positive for classic variant renal AML. Initial diagnosis is centred on imagining studies, based in fatty tissue concentration. The AML expresses melanocytic markers. This helps differentiate from renal cell carcinoma. AM833 (cagrilintide) is a novel lipidated amylin analog that is undergoing clinical trials as a nonselective AMYR and CTR agonist. In the current study, we have investigated the pharmacology of AM833 across 25 endpoints and compared this peptide with AMYR selective and nonselective lipidated analogs (AM1213 and AM1784), and the clinically used peptide agonists pramlintide (AMYR selective) and salmon CT (nonselective). We also profiled human CT and rat amylin as prototypical selective agonists of CTR and AMYRs, respectively. Our results demonstrate that AM833 has a unique pharmacological profile across diverse measures of receptor binding, activation, and regulation. In low- and middle-income countries, children experience multiple risks for delayed development. We evaluated a multicomponent, group-based early child development intervention including behavioural recommendations on responsive stimulation, nutrition, water, sanitation, hygiene, mental health and lead exposure prevention.
We conducted a 9-month, parallel, multiarm, cluster-randomised controlled trial in 31 rural villages in Kishoreganj District, Bangladesh. Villages were randomly allocated to group sessions ('group'); alternating groups and home visits ('combined'); or a passive control arm. Sessions were delivered fortnightly by trained community members. The primary outcome was child stimulation (Family Care Indicators); the secondary outcome was child development (Ages and Stages Questionnaire Inventory, ASQi). Other outcomes included dietary diversity, latrine status, use of a child potty, handwashing infrastructure, caregiver mental health and knowledge of lead. Analyses were intention to treat. Dat, multicomponent interventions can be effective at improving child development outcomes in rural Bangladesh, and that they have the potential to be delivered at scale.

COVID-19 has changed the epidemiology of trauma. However, Taiwan is a country with a low COVID-19 threat, and people's daily lives have remained mostly unchanged during this period. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the trend of trauma incidence and the service of trauma care is affected by the relatively minor COVID-19 pandemic in Taiwan.
A single-institute, retrograde cohort study.
An observational study based on the trauma registry of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (CGMH).
Trauma patients presented to the emergency department of CGMH in the period of 1 January to 30 June 2020 (week 1 to week 26) were designated as the COVID-19 group, with 1980 patients in total. Patients of the same period in 2015-2019 were designated as the pre-COVID-19 group, with 10 334 patients overall.
The primary outcome is the incidence of trauma admission. Differences in trauma mechanism, severity, location and outcome were also compared in both groups.
A decrease in trauma incidence during March and April 2020 was noticed.

Regions of interest in tumor core, tumor border, pancreas border with tumor, nontumoral pancreas, and aorta were recorded on pancreatic parenchymal phase (PPP) dual-energy CT 70-keV, 52-keV, and iodine material density (MD) images, plus portal venous phase (PVP) conventional CT images. Enhancement gradient (delta) across the tumor-pancreas interface was calculated. In recent literature, it has become apparent that radiologic images can serve as mineable databases that contain large amounts of quantitative features with potential clinical significance. Extraction and analysis of these quantitative features is commonly referred to as texture or radiomic analysis. Numerous studies have demonstrated applications for texture and radiomic characterization methods for assessing brain tumors to improve noninvasive predictions of tumor histologic characteristics, molecular profile, distinction of treatment-related changes, and prediction of patient survival. In this review, the current use and future potential of texture or radiomic-based approaches with machine learning for brain tumor image analysis and prediction algorithm construction will be discussed. This technology has the potential to advance the value of diagnostic imaging by extracting currently unused information on medical scans that enables more precise, personalized therapy; however, significant barriers must be overcome if this technology is to be successfully implemented on a wide scale for routine use in the clinical setting. The risks from potential exposure to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and resource reallocation that has occurred to combat the pandemic, have altered the balance of benefits and harms that informed current (pre-COVID-19) guideline recommendations for lung cancer screening and lung nodule evaluation. Consensus statements were developed to guide clinicians managing lung cancer screening programs and patients with lung nodules during the COVID-19 pandemic.
An expert panel of 24 members, including pulmonologists (n = 17), thoracic radiologists (n = 5), and thoracic surgeons (n = 2), was formed. The panel was provided with an overview of current evidence, summarized by recent guidelines related to lung cancer screening and lung nodule evaluation. The panel was convened by video teleconference to discuss and then vote on statements related to 12 common clinical scenarios. All mynas consuming carotenoids had higher levels of plasma carotenoids, but only males showed a significant increase by the end of the experiment. Dietary carotenoids and macronutrient intake consumed in combination tended to increase plasma carotenoid concentrations the most. These results demonstrate for the first time that consuming specific combinations of macronutrients along with carotenoids contributes to optimizing a colorful signal, and point to sex-specific nutritional strategies. Our findings improve our knowledge of how diet choices affect signal expression and, by extension, how nutritionally impoverished diets, such as those consumed by birds in cities, might affect sexual selection processes and, ultimately, population dynamics.Circadian rhythms optimize health by coordinating the timing of physiological processes to match predictable daily environmental challenges. The circadian rhythm of body temperature is thought to be an important modulator of molecular clocks in peripheral tissues, but how daily temperature cycles affect physiological function is unclear. Here, we examined the effect of constant temperature (Tcon, 25°C) and cycling temperature (Tcyc, 28°C22°C during lightdark) paradigms on lifespan of Drosophila melanogaster, and the expression of clock genes, heat shock protein 83 (Hsp83), Frost (Fst) and senescence marker protein-30 (smp-30). Male and female D. melanogaster housed at Tcyc had longer median lifespans than those housed at Tcon. Tcyc induced robust Hsp83 rhythms and rescued the age-related decrease in smp-30 expression that was observed in flies at Tcon, potentially indicating an increased capacity to cope with age-related cellular stress. Ageing under Tcon led to a decrease in the amplitude of expression of all clock genes in the bodies of male flies, except for cyc, which was non-rhythmic, and for per and cry in female flies. Strikingly, housing under Tcyc conditions rescued the age-related decrease in amplitude of all clock genes, and generated rhythmicity in cyc expression, in the male flies, but not the female flies. The results suggest that ambient temperature rhythms modulate D. melanogaster lifespan, and that the amplitude of clock gene expression in peripheral body clocks may be a potential link between temperature rhythms and longevity in male D. melanogaster. Longevity due to Tcyc appeared predominantly independent of clock gene amplitude in female D. melanogaster.The brainstem region medullary raphe modulates non-shivering and shivering thermogenesis and cutaneous vasomotion in rodents. All mynas consuming carotenoids had higher levels of plasma carotenoids, but only males showed a significant increase by the end of the experiment. Here, we examined the effect of constant temperature (Tcon, 25°C) and cycling temperature (Tcyc, 28°C22°C during lightdark) paradigms on lifespan of Drosophila melanogaster, and the expression of clock genes, heat shock protein 83 (Hsp83), Frost (Fst) and senescence marker protein-30 (smp-30). Male and female D. melanogaster housed at Tcyc had longer median lifespans than those housed at Tcon. Tcyc induced robust Hsp83 rhythms and rescued the age-related decrease in smp-30 expression that was observed in flies at Tcon, potentially indicating an increased capacity to cope with age-related cellular stress. Ageing under Tcon led to a decrease in the amplitude of expression of all clock genes in the bodies of male flies, except for cyc, which was non-rhythmic, and for per and cry in female flies. Strikingly, housing under Tcyc conditions rescued the age-related decrease in amplitude of all clock genes, and generated rhythmicity in cyc expression, in the male flies, but not the female flies. The results suggest that ambient temperature rhythms modulate D. melanogaster lifespan, and that the amplitude of clock gene expression in peripheral body clocks may be a potential link between temperature rhythms and longevity in male D. melanogaster. To compare parameters of phacoemulsification using handpiece Active Sentry and Centurion Ozil.
We have evaluated results of 200 eyes of 129 patients that were operated for cataract at the Department of Ophthalmology. All surgeries were performed by one surgeon (NJ). In 100 eyes handpiece Active Sentry was used and in 100 eyes handpiece Centurion Ozil was used. The intraocular pressure during surgery (IOP), cumulative dissipated energy (CDE), ultrasound time (U/Stime) and estimated consumption of balanced salt solution (BSS) were evaluated.
Using handpiece Ozil Centurion the IOP was 65 mmHg, use handpiece Active Sentry enabled decrease safely peroperative IOP to 46 mm Hg withouth increase of fluctuation or declension of stability of the anterior chamber. The mean CDE aU/Stime were significantly statistically decreased using Active Sentry versus Centurion Ozil handpieces. Difference in estimated consumption of balanced salt solution was not statistically significant.

Reproducibility of sperm measurements was evaluated by intraclass correlation coefficients on consecutive measurement. The host response to SARS-CoV-2, the etiologic agent of the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrates significant interindividual variability. In addition to showing more disease in males, the elderly, and individuals with underlying comorbidities, SARS-CoV-2 can seemingly afflict healthy individuals with profound clinical complications. We hypothesize that, in addition to viral load and host antibody repertoire, host genetic variants influence vulnerability to infection. Here we apply human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-based models and CRISPR engineering to explore the host genetics of SARS-CoV-2. We demonstrate that a single-nucleotide polymorphism (rs4702), common in the population and located in the 3' UTR of the protease FURIN, influences alveolar and neuron infection by SARS-CoV-2 in vitro. Thus, we provide a proof-of-principle finding that common genetic variation can have an impact on viral infection and thus contribute to clinical heterogeneity in COVID-19. Now the ability of scFv to detect the immune complexes was verified by immunofluorescence, flow cytometry using magnetic beads and surface plasmon resonance (SPR). As ELISA, the SPR, immunofluorescence and flow cytometry demonstrated the ability of scFv to detect immune complexes in sera from individuals with strongyloidiasis and discriminate them from sera of individuals with other parasitic diseases and healthy individuals. Besides de conventional ELISA, the novel approaches can also be promptly applied as auxiliary diagnostic tools to the existing parasitological method for accurate diagnosis of human strongyloidiasis.
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection continues to be an important public health problem worldwide. Despite the availability of drugs that promote the cure of infection in more than 95% of cases, the identification of HCV carriers remains a major challenge.
To evaluate a strategy for identifying HCV carriers based on combined criteria screening in emergency units and specialty outpatient clinics of a tertiary hospital and among older adults (≥45 years), both suggested as efficient in epidemiological studies.
A cross-sectional, analytical and descriptive study was conducted on individuals of both sexes, aged 45 years and older, attending the emergency department and specialty outpatient clinics of a University Hospital in São Paulo, Brazil, from January 2016 to June 2018. After giving formal consent, the patients were submitted to a standardized interview and rapid testing for the identification of HCV antibodies (SD BIOLINE® anti-HCV).
A total of 606 adult patients (62% women and 37% men) were evaluated. The mean age was 62±10 years. Four positive tests were identified, with confirmation by conventional serology and HCV-RNA determination. Thus, the prevalence of HCV identified in the sample was 0.66%. All patients had a history of risk factors for infection.

To identify more potent sterol enhancers of oligodendrocyte formation, we synthesized a collection of 8,9-unsaturated sterol derivatives and found that 24,25-epoxylanosterol potently promoted oligodendrocyte formation. In OPCs, 24,25-epoxylanosterol was metabolized to 24,25-epoxycholesterol via the epoxycholesterol shunt pathway. The host response to SARS-CoV-2, the etiologic agent of the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrates significant interindividual variability. In addition to showing more disease in males, the elderly, and individuals with underlying comorbidities, SARS-CoV-2 can seemingly afflict healthy individuals with profound clinical complications. We hypothesize that, in addition to viral load and host antibody repertoire, host genetic variants influence vulnerability to infection. Here we apply human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-based models and CRISPR engineering to explore the host genetics of SARS-CoV-2. We demonstrate that a single-nucleotide polymorphism (rs4702), common in the population and located in the 3' UTR of the protease FURIN, influences alveolar and neuron infection by SARS-CoV-2 in vitro. Thus, we provide a proof-of-principle finding that common genetic variation can have an impact on viral infection and thus contribute to clinical heterogeneity in COVID-19. Ongoing genetic studies will help to identify high-risk individuals, predict clinical complications, and facilitate the discovery of drugs.Strongyloidiasis is a helminthiasis of neglected condition that has no gold standard parasitological diagnosis due to the intermittent release of larvae in feces. This study aimed to use an scFv (single chain variable fragment) obtained by Phage Display, previously validated to detect immune complexes in serum samples from individuals infected with Strongyloides stercoralis by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Now the ability of scFv to detect the immune complexes was verified by immunofluorescence, flow cytometry using magnetic beads and surface plasmon resonance (SPR). As ELISA, the SPR, immunofluorescence and flow cytometry demonstrated the ability of scFv to detect immune complexes in sera from individuals with strongyloidiasis and discriminate them from sera of individuals with other parasitic diseases and healthy individuals. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection continues to be an important public health problem worldwide. Despite the availability of drugs that promote the cure of infection in more than 95% of cases, the identification of HCV carriers remains a major challenge. To evaluate a strategy for identifying HCV carriers based on combined criteria screening in emergency units and specialty outpatient clinics of a tertiary hospital and among older adults (≥45 years), both suggested as efficient in epidemiological studies. A cross-sectional, analytical and descriptive study was conducted on individuals of both sexes, aged 45 years and older, attending the emergency department and specialty outpatient clinics of a University Hospital in São Paulo, Brazil, from January 2016 to June 2018. After giving formal consent, the patients were submitted to a standardized interview and rapid testing for the identification of HCV antibodies (SD BIOLINE® anti-HCV). A total of 606 adult patients (62% women and 37% men) were evaluated. The mean age was 62±10 years. Four positive tests were identified, with confirmation by conventional serology and HCV-RNA determination. Thus, the prevalence of HCV identified in the sample was 0.66%. All patients had a history of risk factors for infection. The aim of this study was to explore the everyday life experiences of people one year after corrective osteotomy following a symptomatic, malunited, distal radius fracture.Semi-structured interviews were conducted with twenty respondents, median age 65 (22-81) years. The respondents were recruited consecutively. The interviews were subjected to qualitative content analysis. Three authors took part in the analysis.The result is presented as one theme, 'Daily life works again' with five categories Relief of inconveniences and symptoms, Managing new symptoms and complications, Regaining abilities, Normalised social relationships, Increased wellbeing. The symptoms had declined in severity, some participants regarded themselves as fully restored and used their hand again without hesitation. Others were still bothered by their wrist occasionally and a few had to manage complications. The participants had regained the ability to perform many everyday life activities and reported increased independence and less irritation between spouses, as well as increased wellbeing.One year after a corrective osteotomy following malunion of a distal radius fracture, the patients' experiences represent a continuum. Some are still restricted by their wrist occasionally, the majority experience an increased ease in their performance of activities of daily life and some regard themselves as fully restored. Body Scan was delivered using a standardized script developed for this study. Participants were assessed regarding their capacity to perform the Body Scan, perceptual differences between the knees and how perception changed following the intervention. Functional measures (vertical hop, triple hop, mSEBT, quadriceps strength, and hamstring strength) were taken.Results 96.7% were able to perform a Body Scan, with 93.1% demonstrating a difference in perception between the knees. Of participants with perceptual differences, 92.5% demonstrated improvement in perception following the intervention. Ten participants had a clinically significant improvement in a functional measure following the intervention.Conclusion Most participants could perform Body Scanning. The majority perceived perceptual differences between operated and non-operated knees, and reported more symmetric perception following the intervention. One-third of participants also showed improvements in a functional performance measure. This study aims to find out the impact of different LAA locations with respect of LA on the risk of thrombus formation within LAA in patients with AF. Three different LAA locations at LA were modeled and a fully coupled fluid-structure interaction analysis was performed. Continuous measurement of aortic pressure and aortic flow velocity signals in the operating theatre allows us to draw velocity-pressure (Vel-Pre) loops. The global afterload angle (GALA), derived from the Vel-Pre loops, has been linked to cardiac afterload indicators. As age is the major determinant of constitutive arterial stiffness, we aimed to describe (1) the evolution of the GALA according to age in a large cohort of anesthetized patients and (2) GALA variations induced by haemodynamic interventions.
We included patients for whom continuous monitoring of arterial pressure and cardiac output were indicated. Fluid challenges or vasopressors were administered to treat intra-operative hypotension. The primary endpoint was the comparison of the GALA values between young and old patients. The secondary endpoint was the difference in the GALA values before and after haemodynamic interventions.
We included 133 anaesthetized patients 66 old and 67 young patients. At baseline, the GALA was higher in the old constriction changes (by vasopressors). In addition, the GALA can discriminate the differential effects of phenylephrine and noradrenaline. These results should be confirmed in a prospective, ideally randomized, trial.This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of intraoperative motor evoked potential (MEP) and somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP) monitoring for predicting postoperative motor deficits (PMDs) in patients with internal carotid artery (ICA) aneurysms. The data for 138 patients with ICA aneurysms who underwent surgical clipping as well as their intraoperative neuromonitoring data were retrospectively reviewed. The efficacy of MEP/SSEP changes for predicting PMDs was assessed using binary logistic regression analysis. Subsequently, receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to obtain a supplementary critical value of the MEP/SSEP deterioration duration. The sensitivity and specificity of MEP changes for predicting PMDs were 0.824 and 0.843, respectively. For SSEP changes, the sensitivity and specificity were 0.529 and 0.959, respectively. MEP and SSEP changes were identified as independent predictors for short-term (p = 0.002 and 0.011, respectively) and long-term PMDs (p = 0.040 and 0.006, respectively). The supplementary critical value for MEP deterioration duration for predicting PMDs was 14 min (p = 0.007, AUC = 0.805). For SSEP, the value was 14.5 min (p = 0.042, AUC = 0.875). The MEP/SSEP changes adjusted by those optimal values were also identified as independent predictors for short-term (p less then 0.001 and p = 0.005, respectively) and long-term PMDs (p = 0.019 and 0.003, respectively). Intraoperative MEP and SSEP deterioration durations are effective in predicting PMDs in patients with ICA aneurysms.Biomonitoring provides direct evidence of the bioavailability and accumulation of toxic elements in the environment, and homing pigeons have been proposed as a biomonitor of atmospheric pollution. We evaluated metal concentrations in homing pigeon feather tissue as a biomonitoring tool. We measured cadmium, lead, and mercury concentrations in feathers collected from 5-6-yo homing pigeons from Guangzhou, Beijing, and Harbin, China during 2011, and feathers of 1, 5, and 10-yo homing pigeons collected from Guangzhou, Beijing, and Harbin, China during 2015-16. We compared metal concentrations in feathers between sexes and among ages and evaluated spatio-temporal differences. Correlations between feather metal concentrations and previously evaluated kidney and liver metal concentrations are reported. There were no significant differences in feather metal concentrations between male and female pigeons or among 1, 5, and 10-yo pigeons. Cadmium, lead, and mercury concentrations in feathers of 1-yo pigeons were significantly correlated with concentrations in liver and kidney tissues, although the correlations were not consistent. Spatio-temporal differences in feather metal concentrations suggest the usefulness of feathers in identifying areas of concern and remedial effectiveness. Homing pigeon feather metal concentrations appear to be useful as a screening biomonitoring tool.A natural compound with the algicidal effect was isolated from the culture medium of Aspergillus sp. The primary endpoint was the comparison of the GALA values between young and old patients. The secondary endpoint was the difference in the GALA values before and after haemodynamic interventions. We included 133 anaesthetized patients 66 old and 67 young patients. At baseline, the GALA was higher in the old constriction changes (by vasopressors). In addition, the GALA can discriminate the differential effects of phenylephrine and noradrenaline. These results should be confirmed in a prospective, ideally randomized, trial.This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of intraoperative motor evoked potential (MEP) and somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP) monitoring for predicting postoperative motor deficits (PMDs) in patients with internal carotid artery (ICA) aneurysms. The data for 138 patients with ICA aneurysms who underwent surgical clipping as well as their intraoperative neuromonitoring data were retrospectively reviewed. The efficacy of MEP/SSEP changes for predicting PMDs was assessed using binary logistic regression analysis. Subsequently, receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to obtain a supplementary critical value of the MEP/SSEP deterioration duration. The sensitivity and specificity of MEP changes for predicting PMDs were 0.824 and 0.843, respectively. For SSEP changes, the sensitivity and specificity were 0.529 and 0.959, respectively. MEP and SSEP changes were identified as independent predictors for short-term (p = 0.002 and 0.011, respectively) and long-term PMDs (p = 0.040 and 0.006, respectively). The supplementary critical value for MEP deterioration duration for predicting PMDs was 14 min (p = 0.007, AUC = 0.805). For SSEP, the value was 14.5 min (p = 0.042, AUC = 0.875). The MEP/SSEP changes adjusted by those optimal values were also identified as independent predictors for short-term (p less then 0.001 and p = 0.005, respectively) and long-term PMDs (p = 0.019 and 0.003, respectively). We compared metal concentrations in feathers between sexes and among ages and evaluated spatio-temporal differences. Correlations between feather metal concentrations and previously evaluated kidney and liver metal concentrations are reported. There were no significant differences in feather metal concentrations between male and female pigeons or among 1, 5, and 10-yo pigeons. Cadmium, lead, and mercury concentrations in feathers of 1-yo pigeons were significantly correlated with concentrations in liver and kidney tissues, although the correlations were not consistent. Here, we present the first ever management effectiveness assessment of Pakistan's Protected Areas (PAs). We link these assessments to the delivery of conservation outcomes focusing on the threatened Western Tragopan (Tragopan melanocephalus) endemic to Pakistan and India. We used two approaches, first mapping the spatial distribution of potential habitat coverage using machine learning ensemble models and second, an assessment of the management effectiveness of protected areas. Our results show that only Machiara National Park scored just above 40% (indicating relatively weak management), 22 of the PAs fell within the 25-50% quantile (indicating weak management), and 3 scored below 25% (indicating poor management). PAs within the species distributional range covered 92,387 ha which is only 2% of the total potential habitat of the Tragopan. Scoring of Planning element was insufficient both in term of the site and species.

Contraceptive counselling is essential in women with chronic disease, though it is frequently overlooked. We aimed to assess practices and awareness in contraceptive counselling in hospital physicians caring for reproductive age women with chronic disease.

Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL), with unknown causes, is one of the most common challenges facing pregnancy. Apoptotic signaling pathways are involved in the normal and abnormal pregnancy process. Despite the evidence pointing toward the aberrant expression of apoptotic and apoptotic-related genes in pregnancy complications, the involvement of these genes in RPL remains to be elucidated. This study aimed to investigate the expression levels of BAX, MEG3, and miR-214-3p (as a microRNA), and their associations in an Iranian population.
Following the extraction of RNA from blood samples of RPL patients and controls, quantitative expression levels of BAX, MEG3, and miR-214-3p genes were analyzed by real-time RT-PCR.
The findings showed that the expression levels of BAX and miRNA-214-3p were significantly higher in the blood samples of RPL patients than in control samples. In contrast, the expression of MEG3 was significantly down-regulated in women RPL. Furthermore, altered expressions of MEG3 and miRNA-214-3p are associated with their target gene BAX, where the BAX expression is positively and negatively correlated with the expressions of has-miR-214-3P and MEG3, respectively. ROC curve evaluation demonstrated the highest specificity and diagnostic value for miR-214-3p expression in distinguishing RPL samples from the healthy controls.
These data indicated that the aberrant expression of BAX, MEG3, miRNA-214-3p genes in RPL patients could provide new insights into the biological characteristics and related pathways of differentially expressed genes, which could help as potential diagnostic biomarkers and a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms of RPL.

Within hours of exposure, nearly half of the cattle developed lethargy, anorexia, depression, and recumbency, followed by bellowing, colic, and death. Even though the uneaten contaminated hay was removed the first day, nearly 100 animals died within the first 48 h. Three of these cattle were examined postmortem, and tissues and hay samples were collected for microscopic and chemical analysis. Several days later, a smaller number of the clinically poisoned cattle developed neurologic disease with aberrant behavior, aggression, icterus, blindness, exhaustion, and death. A total of 165 cattle were fatally poisoned. Poisoned cattle had swollen, dark, mottled livers that had a prominent nutmeg-like lobular pattern on cut section. Histologically, there was severe centrilobular-to-panlobular hepatic necrosis with marked hepatocellular swelling, degeneration, and necrosis. The surviving cattle developed liver disease characterized by altered serum biochemical analyses and microscopic hepatocellular degeneration and necrosis. In subsequent biopsies and analysis, these lesions resolved within 6-7 mo. After confirming toxicity of the hay in cattle, goats, and ****, followed by a mouse bioassay-guided chemical fractionation process, Salvia reflexa was identified as the contaminant in the hay responsible for the hepatotoxicity. S. reflexa has not been reported previously to cause fatal hepatotoxicity in livestock in North America, to our knowledge.

We built a computational model for MWA including a 200 mm long and 14 G antenna from Amica-Gen and solved an electromagnetic-thermal coupled problem using COMSOL Multiphysics. We compared the coagulation zone (CZ) sizes created with pulsed and continuous modes under and conditions. The model was used to compare long vs. short pulses, and 1000 W high-powered short pulses. experiments were conducted to validate the model. The computational models predicted the axial diameter of the CZ with an error of 2-3% and overestimated the transverse diameter by 9-11%. For short pulses, the computer modeling results showed a trend toward larger CZ when duty cycles decreases. In general, short pulsed mode yielded higher CZ diameters and volumes than continuous mode, but the differences were not significant (<5%), as in terms of CZ sphericity.
