The failure modes of the specimens still belonged to ductile failure because of the confinement of outer steel tube. The degree of steel tube corrosion, diameter-to-thickness ratio, and confinement coefficient had substantial influences on the AULC and the ultimate compressive strength of circular thin-walled CFST stub columns. A simple AULC prediction model for corroded circular thin-walled CFST stub columns was presented through the regression of the experimental data and parameter analysis.After delivery, mothers are encouraged to increase physical activity (PA) gradually to regulate body weight; however, data on PA in relation to postpartum weight retention remains scarce, particularly among Asian women. In a cohort of 1617 Vietnamese mothers, we investigated the prospective association between habitual PA exposures at 3-month postpartum and weight retention at 6-month and 12-month postpartum. Detailed information on PA intensity and domains was collected from participants using a validated instrument specifically for Vietnamese women. Linear regression analyses and a general linear model for the repeated weight retention measures were used to ascertain the apparent relationships. On average, the participants reported 3.6 (SD 3.9) and 2.6 (SD 3.8) kg weight loss at 6- and 12-month postpartum, respectively. Total and light-intensity PA were inversely associated with the postpartum weight retention (p for trend less then 0.05). This review aimed to summarize the molecular mechanisms underlying AA-induced nephrotoxicity with an emphasis on its enzymatic bioactivation, and to discuss some agents and their modes of action to reduce AA nephrotoxicity. By addressing these two aspects, including mechanisms of action of AA nephrotoxicity and protective approaches against the latter, and especially by covering the whole range of these protective agents, this review provides an overview on AA nephrotoxicity. Among 11 known types and subtypes of MPS, neuronopathy occurs in seven (MPS I, II, IIIA, IIIB, IIIC, IIID, VII). Brain dysfunctions, occurring in these seven types/subtypes include various behavioral disorders. Intriguingly, behavioral symptoms are significantly different between patients suffering from various MPS types. Molecular base of such differences remains unknown. Here, we asked if expression of genes considered as connected to behavior (based on Gene Ontology, GO terms) is changed in MPS. Using cell lines of all MPS types, we have performed transcriptomic (RNA-seq) studies and assessed expression of genes involved in behavior. We found significant differences between MPS types in this regard, with the most severe changes in MPS IIIA (the type considered as the behaviorally most severely affected), while the lowest changes in MPS IVA and MPS VI (types in which little or no behavioral disorders are known). Intriguingly, relatively severe changes were found also in MPS IVB (in which, despite no behavioral disorder noted, the same gene is mutated as in GM1 gangliosidosis, a severe neurodegenerative disease) and MPS IX (in which only a few patients were described to date, thus, behavioral problems are not well recognized). More detailed analyses of expression of certain genes allowed us to propose an association of specific changes in the levels of transcripts in specific MPS types to certain behavioral disorders observed in patients. Therefore, this work provides a principle for further studies on the molecular mechanism of behavioral changes occurring in MPS patients.Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a kind of water-soluble polymer, which has been widely used in different industries due to its excellent mechanical and chemical properties. In this paper, the effects of polyvinyl alcohol with different hydrolysis and polymerization degrees on the rheological properties of cement mortar are studied. The results show that the rheological properties of PVA-modified cement mortar can be described by the modified Bingham model. The yield stress of modified cement mortar is less than that of unmodified mortar when the degree of polymerization and the content of PVA are small. With the increase of polyvinyl alcohol content and polymerization degree, the yield stress and plastic viscosity of modified cement mortar increase sharply, which are larger than those of the unmodified cement mortar. However, the effect of hydrolysis degree of PVA on yield stress and plastic viscosity of modified cement mortar is not obvious.

  • Peri- and postmenopausal disorders can have a significant impact on quality of life. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) might be necessary in order to decrease women's symptoms. The German S3 guideline "Peri- and Postmenopause-Diagnostics and Therapy" (2020) provides recommendations that include the most recent evidence as well as the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study results from 2002 and 2004. These results led to reduced prescription patterns due to a high risk of cardiovascular diseases as well as an increased risk for breast cancer if HRT had been administered. Both ongoing analyses of subgroups and other studies extenuated the WHI data, since the increased risks were neither generalizable to the typical postmenopausal patient (regarding age and risk profile) nor to the medication being used today. This article summarizes all aspects of HRT in peri- and postmenopausal women (indications, contraindications, practical approaches, risks, prevention) and provides recommendations with respect to the most recent S3 guideline.BACKGROUND Biologic therapies are a key component of modern medicine, especially in the treatment of chronic conditions and in particular immune-mediated diseases. Biosimilars are molecularly highly similar variants of biologic therapies approved after patent expiration of the original product. OBJECTIVES To provide an overview of the emerging role of biosimilars and present data with respect to efficacy and safety. CURRENT DATA Since the approval of human insulin as the first biologic therapy, over 150 biologic therapeutics have been approved in the European Union (EU). Due to the high cost of development and production, biologic therapies place a heavy burden on healthcare systems and, at costs totaling 13.8 billion Euros annually, comprise one third of the annual drug expenditure in Germany. Biosimilars are highly similar versions of already approved biologic therapies that do not have clinically relevant differences with respect to efficacy, safety and immunogenicity, as far as can currently be ascertained. Through competition with the original product, biosimilars have been able to drive down prices and relieve the healthcare system without changing overall efficacy. The potential savings through biosimilars are estimated to be 500 million Euros in Germany alone. Currently, over 50 biosimilars of 16 different biologic therapies are approved in the EU. CONCLUSIONS Biosimilars are safe and economical alternatives to biooriginal drugs that can boost access to modern, high-cost therapies and relieve healthcare systems.Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are regarded as harbingers of metastases. Their ability to predict response to therapy, relapse, and resistance to treatment has proposed their value as putative diagnostic and prognostic indicators. CTCs represent one of the zeniths of cancer evolution in terms of cell survival; however, the triggers of CTC generation, the identification of potentially metastatic CTCs, and the mechanisms contributing to their heterogeneity and aggressiveness represent issues not yet fully deciphered. Thus, prior to enabling liquid biopsy applications to reach clinical prime time, understanding how the above mechanistic information can be applied to improve treatment decisions is a key challenge. Here, we provide our perspective on how CTCs can provide mechanistic insights into tumor pathogenesis, as well as on CTC clinical value. In doing so, we aim to (a) describe how CTCs disseminate from the primary tumor, and their link to epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT); (b) trace the route of CTCsmanagement.The availability and repartition of fucosylated glycans within the gastrointestinal tract contributes to the adaptation of gut bacteria species to ecological niches. To access this source of nutrients, gut bacteria encode α-L-fucosidases (fucosidases) which catalyze the hydrolysis of terminal α-L-fucosidic linkages. We determined the substrate and linkage specificities of fucosidases from the human gut symbiont Ruminococcus gnavus. Sequence similarity network identified strain-specific fucosidases in R. gnavus ATCC 29149 and E1 strains that were further validated enzymatically against a range of defined oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates. Using a combination of glycan microarrays, mass spectrometry, isothermal titration calorimetry, crystallographic and saturation transfer difference NMR approaches, we identified a fucosidase with the capacity to recognize sialic acid-terminated fucosylated glycans (sialyl Lewis X/A epitopes) and hydrolyze α1-3/4 fucosyl linkages in these substrates without the need to remove sialic acid. Molecular dynamics simulation and docking showed that 3'-Sialyl Lewis X (sLeX) could be accommodated within the binding site of the enzyme. This specificity may contribute to the adaptation of R. gnavus strains to the infant and adult gut and has potential applications in diagnostic glycomic assays for diabetes and certain cancers.Combination immunotherapy targeting the PD-1 and CTLA-4 checkpoint inhibitor pathways provides substantial clinical benefit in patients with advanced-stage cancer but at the risk of dose-limiting inflammatory and autoimmune toxicity. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/shin1-rz-2994.html The delicate balance that exists between unleashing tumor killing and promoting systemic autoimmune toxicity represents a major clinical challenge. Responses to 100 µg of targeted anti-CTLA-4 also equaled or exceeded those observed with a series of systemic injections delivering 600 µg (p  less then  0.05). While preserving antitumor activity, this approach resulted in serum anti-CTLA-4 exposure (area under the curve) that averaged only 1/16th of that measured with systemic therapy. Consistent with the marked differences in systemic exposure, systemic anti-CTLA-4 stimulated the onset of autoimmune thyroiditis in iodide-exposed NOD.H-2h4 ****, as measured by anti-thyroglobulin antibody titer, while hydrogel-encapsulated anti-CTLA-4 had a minimal effect (p ≤ 0.01). At the same time, this targeted low-dose anti-CTLA-4 approach synergized well with systemic anti-PD-1 to control tumor growth and resulted in a high frequency of complete responders that were immune to tumor re-challenge at a distant site. We conclude that targeted and controlled delivery of low-dose anti-CTLA-4 has the potential to improve the benefit-risk ratio associated with combination checkpoint inhibitor therapy.

  • There is a call for integrative studies examining the roles of biological and psychosocial factors and their interrelations in shaping maternal postpartum psychopathology. Using longitudinal data from 198 primiparous mothers, we tested a biopsychosocial model for the etiology of maternal postpartum depressive symptoms that integrated childhood emotional maltreatment, couple relationship satisfaction, and oxytocin and dopamine D4 receptor genes (i.e., OXTR rs53576 and DRD4). Results indicate (a) two indirect effects from childhood emotional maltreatment and DRD4 to depressive symptoms at 1 year postpartum through couple relationship satisfaction at 6 months postpartum; (b) an interactive effect between DRD4 and couple relationship satisfaction at 6 months postpartum in predicting depressive symptoms at 1 year postpartum, which is in concert with the differential susceptibility hypotheses; and (c) no mediating effects or moderating effects (after adjusting for multiple testing with Bonferroni correction) involving OXTR rs53576. Notably, all associations were identified after controlling for several key covariates (e.g., maternal prenatal depressive symptoms). Last, robustness of the currently identified interactive effect involving DRD4 was demonstrated by an extensive set of additional analyses considering the effects of rGE, G × Covariates, and/or E × Covariates. Taken altogether, this study represents one of the initial efforts for a more sophisticated portrayal of how nature and nurture forces may work in conjunction with each other to shape new mothers' psychopathology. Guided by family systems theory, we assumed both parents' child-related bliss to be positively associated with individual (i.e., spillover effects) as well as the spouse's partnership satisfaction (i.e., crossover effects). Longitudinal dyadic data from N = 135 heterosexual couples were analyzed using the actor-partner interdependence model, which takes interdependencies between couples into account. Taken as a set, the findings suggest that fathers' child-related and partnership-related perceptions are more closely linked than is the case for mothers. Networks were jointly estimated among groups. Within the Suicide Attempt and ED groups, interoceptive deficits and pain tolerance emerged as important bridge symptoms, whereas feeling inadequate was an important bridge symptom in the Clinical Outpatient group. Within all groups, having thoughts of killing oneself and feeling inadequate were central, meaning that they were most strongly connected to all other symptoms in the networks.     There is a call for integrative studies examining the roles of biological and psychosocial factors and their interrelations in shaping maternal postpartum psychopathology. Using longitudinal data from 198 primiparous mothers, we tested a biopsychosocial model for the etiology of maternal postpartum depressive symptoms that integrated childhood emotional maltreatment, couple relationship satisfaction, and oxytocin and dopamine D4 receptor genes (i.e., OXTR rs53576 and DRD4). Results indicate (a) two indirect effects from childhood emotional maltreatment and DRD4 to depressive symptoms at 1 year postpartum through couple relationship satisfaction at 6 months postpartum; (b) an interactive effect between DRD4 and couple relationship satisfaction at 6 months postpartum in predicting depressive symptoms at 1 year postpartum, which is in concert with the differential susceptibility hypotheses; and (c) no mediating effects or moderating effects (after adjusting for multiple testing with Bonferroni correction) involving OXTR rs53576. Notably, all associations were identified after controlling for several key covariates (e.g., maternal prenatal depressive symptoms). Last, robustness of the currently identified interactive effect involving DRD4 was demonstrated by an extensive set of additional analyses considering the effects of rGE, G × Covariates, and/or E × Covariates. Taken altogether, this study represents one of the initial efforts for a more sophisticated portrayal of how nature and nurture forces may work in conjunction with each other to shape new mothers' psychopathology.   • Biogenic production of nanoparticles is eco-friendly, less expensive method with various medical and biological applications. Nanotechnology along with photodynamic therapy is gaining tremendous importance with enhanced efficacy. The present work was aimed to evaluate methanolic extracts and nanoparticles of two selected plants (Datura suavolens and Verbina tenuisecta) for cytotoxic photodynamic, antioxidant and antimicrobial study. Both extract and silver (5 mM) nanoparticles of Datura plant showed significant activities against bacterial strains. Maximum ZOI of 27.3 ± 1.6 mm was observed with nanoparticles of Datura branches with minimum inhibitory (MIC) value of 32 µg/ml. In case of antifungal and antioxidant assay samples were moderately active. Silver nanoparticles and extracts were effective against rhabdomyosarcoma cell line with lowest IC50 value of 42.5 ± 0.6 μg/ml and percent viability of 25.6 ± 1.3 of Verbena tenuisecta. However, nanoparticles of Datura leaves and branches were more potent with IC50 value of 2.4 ± 0.9 μg/ml and 7.8 ± 1.1 μg/ml respectively. The result of photodynamic study showed that efficacy of photosensitizer was enhanced and percent viability reduced when nanoparticles used as an adjunct. The color change and UV spectra (415‒425 nm) indicated the production of nanoparticles. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra showed presence of different functional groups e.g., hydroxyl, carbonyl and amino. Nanoparticles are sphenoid in morphology and size ranges between 20-150 nm. We describe immune response biomarkers along with new developments that could translate into advances.INTRODUCTION The presence of microembolic signals (MES) during the acute phase of stroke is poorly understood, and its role and clinical application in relation to risk stratification and prognosis in patients remain uncertain. We assessed the prevalence of spontaneous MES in acute stroke and their relationship with risk stratification, stroke recurrence, morbidity, and mortality. PATIENTS AND METHODS This was a prospective cohort study conducted in the Stroke Unit. The MES presence was evaluated by transcranial Doppler (TCD) in patients with ischemic stroke within 48 h. The outcomes (risk stratification, morbidity, mortality, and recurrence of a stroke) were followed up for 6 months. The relationship between risk stratification and MES was obtained by odds ratios and that between MES and stroke recurrence, morbidity, and mortality using multiple logistic regression; considering statistical significance at P  less then  0.05. RESULTS Of the 111 patients studied, 70 were men (63.1%) and 90 were white (81.1%), with a median age of 68 years. The MES frequency was 7%. There was a significant relationship between MES and symptomatic carotid disease (OR = 22.7; 95% CI 4.1-125.7; P  less then  0.001), a shorter time to monitoring (OR = 12.4; 95% CI  1.4-105.4; P = 0.02), and stroke recurrence (OR = 16.83; 95% CI 2.01-141; P = .009). DISCUSSION It was observed that the stroke recurrence adjusted for prior stroke was higher and earlier among patients with MES detection. In conclusion, MES demonstrated a significant correlation with symptomatic carotid disease and a shorter DELAY until monitoring, and could be a predictor for the early recurrence of stroke in the long term.Liquid biopsies are still far from widely implanted in the clinical arena. Issues related to the added sensitivity of this test beyond conventional methods have not been fully resolved. A11 is specific for prostate stem cell antigen (PSCA), a cell surface glycoprotein which is overexpressed in more than 90% of both localized prostate cancer and bone metastases. METHODS PC3-PSCA cells were implanted subcutaneously (s.c.) and intratibially (i.t) in nude ****. Efficacy of α-RIT (two fractions-14-day interval) was studied on s.c. macrotumors (0, 1.5 and 1.9 MBq) and on i.t. microtumors (~100-200 μm; 0, 0.8 or 1.5 MBq) by tumor-volume measurements. The injected activities for therapies were estimated from separate biodistribution and myelotoxicity studies. RESULTS Tumor targeting of 211At-A11 was efficient and the effect on s.c. macrotumors was strong and dose-dependent. At 6 weeks, the mean tumor volumes frols, respectively), i.e., a 99.7% reduction (p less then 0.001). The different outcome in experiment 1 and 2 is most likely due to differences in microtumor sizes at therapy, or higher tumor-take in experiment 2 (where more cells were implanted). The proposed internal curing technology can be considered a real alternative to achieve the expected performance of a high-performance concrete since a concrete with a compressive strength range from 45 to 67 MPa, density range from 2130 to 2310 kg/m3, and exceptional durability ( less then 2000 C) was effectively developed.Physical activity (PA) is a factor that may have an influence on the symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD). The aim of this study was to identify the potential determinants of spontaneous PA in a PD patient group. A total of 134 PD patients aged 65.2 ± 9.2 years with a Hoehn-Yahr scale score ≤4 and a Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) score ≥24 were examined. For the study's purposes, the authors analyzed age, sex, education, history of PD, dopaminergic treatment, the severity of PD symptoms using Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), and Hoehn-Yahr scale. Additionally, all participants were evaluated through a set of scales for specific neuropsychiatric symptoms including depression, anxiety, apathy, fatigue, and sleep disorders. A linear regression analysis was used with backward elimination. In the total explanatory model, for 12% of the variability in activity (R2 = 0.125; F(16.133) = 2.185; p less then 0.01), the significant predictor was starting therapy with the dopamine agonist (DA) (β= 0.420; t= 4.068; p = 0.000), which was associated with a longer duration of moderate PA. In the total explanatory model, for more than 13% of the variance in time spent sitting (R2 = 0.135; F(16.130) = 2.267; p less then 0.01), the significant predictors were secondary education and the results of the UPDRS. The effect of zoledronic acid (ZA) and pamidronic acid (PA) on the metabolism of oral fibroblasts, oral keratinocytes and three-dimensional oral mucosa models was investigated and then repeated in the presence of hydroxyapatite granules. Without hydroxyapatite, ZA and PA significantly reduced the metabolic activity of oral cells in a dose-dependent manner. Both drugs reduced epithelial thickness and 30 µM ZA resulted in loss of the epithelium. Hydroxyapatite granules had a protective effect on oral cells, with metabolic activity retained. Oral mucosa models retained their multi-layered epithelium when treated with ZA in the presence of hydroxyapatite granules and metabolic activity was comparable to controls. These results demonstrate hydroxyapatite granules protected oral soft tissues from damage caused by bisphosphonate exposure. The proposed method simultaneously solves the problem of Person ReID using silhouettes and enables home monitoring systems to employ sensor fusion techniques for data analysis. The aim of this study was to identify the potential determinants of spontaneous PA in a PD patient group. A total of 134 PD patients aged 65.2 ± 9.2 years with a Hoehn-Yahr scale score ≤4 and a Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) score ≥24 were examined. For the study's purposes, the authors analyzed age, sex, education, history of PD, dopaminergic treatment, the severity of PD symptoms using Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), and Hoehn-Yahr scale. Additionally, all participants were evaluated through a set of scales for specific neuropsychiatric symptoms including depression, anxiety, apathy, fatigue, and sleep disorders. A linear regression analysis was used with backward elimination. In the total explanatory model, for 12% of the variability in activity (R2 = 0.125; F(16.133) = 2.185; p less then 0.01), the significant predictor was starting therapy with the dopamine agonist (DA) (β= 0.420; t= 4.068; p = 0.000), which was associated with a longer duration of moderate PA. We hypothesised that hydroxyapatite (Ca5(PO4)3(OH)) could reduce bisphosphonate concentrations and protect the oral mucosa by exploiting bisphosphonate's calcium binding affinity. The effect of zoledronic acid (ZA) and pamidronic acid (PA) on the metabolism of oral fibroblasts, oral keratinocytes and three-dimensional oral mucosa models was investigated and then repeated in the presence of hydroxyapatite granules. Without hydroxyapatite, ZA and PA significantly reduced the metabolic activity of oral cells in a dose-dependent manner. Both drugs reduced epithelial thickness and 30 µM ZA resulted in loss of the epithelium. Hydroxyapatite granules had a protective effect on oral cells, with metabolic activity retained. Oral mucosa models retained their multi-layered epithelium when treated with ZA in the presence of hydroxyapatite granules and metabolic activity was comparable to controls. These results demonstrate hydroxyapatite granules protected oral soft tissues from damage caused by bisphosphonate exposure. A total of 472 CVD patients were enrolled in this study and divided into three groups; n = 144 for PPAR-γ (C/G) variation and n = 164 in each group to investigate FTO (T/A) and ABCC8 (G/T) variation, respectively. Polymorphisms within groups were identified by using Tetra and/or Tri ARM-PCR. This study showed positive association among genetic polymorphisms in PPAR-γ, FTO, and ABCC8 groups with altered metabolic parameters in CVD patients. Findings showed that smoking is major contributory factor for genetic polymorphism that was strongly associated with elevated blood glucose and serum TGs accompanying PPAR-γ, FTO, and ABCC8 genetic polymorphism in 25%, 24%, and 20% in smokers and 11%, 10%, and 5% in non-smoker CVD patients, respectively. To enhance total nitrogen removal, an approach of supplying water at two locations in the CDW at different influent flow ratios, combined with artificial aeration, was proposed to adjust carbon and oxygen distribution in the system. The highest average TN removal was achieved at low influent concentration (CDW4; influent flow ratio 12). The removal of TN in winter and spring were 58.93 and 83.26%, respectively. The distribution of carbon sources in the **** zone enhanced denitrification. Of the high influent concentration treatments, CDW2 (21) achieved 16.97% more TN removal on average compared with CDW1 (30), after extra artificial aeration was applied in the front zone. However, nitrification was a limiting step in the system, which became the primary problem preventing pollutant purification. Moreover, nitrifying bacteria abundance was negatively correlated to the influent flow ratio and autotrophic denitrifying bacterial abundance was positively correlated to the influent flow ratios. With limited care and social support resources, there is a greater anticipated decline in QoL among stroke survivors in Africa. This study aims to examine post-stroke QoL, properties of outcome measures adopted and predictors of the QoL among African stroke survivors.

    The aim of the present study was to evaluate clinical efficacy and safety of superselective embolization of the superior rectal artery (SRA) for the treatment of internal hemorrhoidal bleeding.

    Patients with stage II and stage III internal hemorrhoids, treated by interventional embolization of the SRA in our department between January 2017 and June 2019 were retrospectively evaluated. All patients suffering from disabling chronic hematochezia and some with relative contraindications for operation (n = 17) orrejectionofconventional hemorrhoidectomy (n = 15). Superselective SRA branch embolization was performed using gelatin sponge particles (350-560μm) and metallic coils (2-3mm). This treatment process was planned by a multidisciplinary team consisting of proctologist,gastroenterologist and radiologist. The surgical efficacy, postoperative complications and follow-up outcomes were observed.

UK literature indicates that pupils in these schools feel that their teachers are ill-equipped, cautious or even discouraging towards their aspiration and/or application to medicine. This study aimed to explore teachers' perspectives and practices to include their voice in discussions and consider how medical schools might best engage with them to facilitate WA. Interviews were conducted with high school teachers in three UK regions, working in schools targeted by WA initiatives. Data were analysed thematically using template analysis, using a largely data-driven approach. Findings showed that although medicine was largely seen as a prestigious and worthwhile career, teachers held reservations about advocating this above other choices. Teachers saw it as their role to encourage pupils to educate themselves about medicine, but to ultimately allow pupils to make their own decisions.

We aimed to estimate the different salt intakes and evaluate the knowledge and self-awareness about salt among people speaking the Teochew, Teochew-Hakka and Hakka dialects in the Chaoshan region of southern China. DESIGN The study followed a cluster sampling of residents in Chaoshan region. General characteristics, lifestyles, health status as well as knowledge and self-awareness related to salt intake were investigated using a questionnaire. Anthropometric variables as well as Na and K excretion in a 24-h urine collection were measured. SETTING Chaoshan region of China. PARTICIPANTS Four hundred fifteen adults who spoke only one of these three dialects. RESULTS The salt intake of adults who spoke the Teochew, Teochew-Hakka and Hakka dialects was 7·19 (interquartile range (IQR) 5·29-10·17), 9·03 (IQR 6·62-11·54) and 10·12 (IQR 7·61-12·82) g/d, respectively, with significant differences between Teochew and Teochew-Hakka speakers and between Teochew and Hakka speakers (both P less then 0·05). https://www.selleckchem.com/products/iberdomide.html The NaK ratio for adults who spoke the three dialects was 3·00 (IQR 2·00-4·11), 3·50 (IQR 2·64-4·82) and 4·52 (IQR 3·35-5·97), respectively, and differed significantly among the groups (all P less then 0·05). Additionally, the vast quantity of unprocessed Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste pose serious problems in some places, particularly in residential, institutional, industrial or commercial construction hotspots. While several waste quantification methodologies have been proposed in the literature, the quantification of waste generation in India is inadequate. This inadequacy can be attributed to the lack of appropriate hierarchical control mechanism, absence of a common C&D waste estimation method, and the lack of C&D waste processing knowledge among generators, collectors, operators, regulators, and the general public. The C&D Waste Management Rules 2016 were introduced to ensure organized collection, storage, transportation, treatment/processing, and disposal of C&D waste in India and fix responsibilities of all stakeholders for management of C&D waste. This comprehensive research attempts to analyze the existing legislation and challenges, and proposes an information framework for organized collection, storage, treatment/processing, and disposal of C&D waste. The C&D waste processing mechanism, potential application of recycled C&D waste products, its limitations, and the best practices of C&D waste management in India are important constituents of the proposed framework.Annually 500 M t organic wastes are produced in India from the agriculture sector. Transportation of bulky organic manures for centralized collection, processing and distribution to farms is cost prohibitive. Hence, recycling of agricultural wastes using vermicompost technology at the farm level is a practical way of managing agriwaste for meeting the plant nutrient requirement. Our experience with a 1.584 ha farm for three years (2015-2016 to 2017-2018) revealed that 8.1 t vermicompost was produced in three batches from 24 t agriwastes produced within the farm area. The system productivity by recycling these farm generated agriwastes and run-off water was 18.05 t (≈11.4 t ha-1) rice equivalent yield which was higher by 2.6 times as compared to rice fallow (4.46 t ha-1). Also, the net return from this system (Indian rupees 70141 ha-1) was higher by 2.3 times, after considering the fixed cost towards construction of a water recycling pond. An increase in carbon stock in soil for the four years study period was 0.66 Mg ha-1 year-1 with the agriwaste recycling system under organic nutrition. For the inorganic fertilizer plot, the increase in carbon stock was 0.53 Mg ha-1 year-1. A decrease in bulk density from 1.56 to 1.46 Mg m-3, increase in water holding capacity from 0.43 to 0.52 cm3 cm-3 and increase in available P and K content in soil from 38.0 and 174.7 kg ha-1 to 45.8 and 186.5 kg ha-1, respectively, were noted. Thus, recycling of agricultural waste at the farm level is useful in improving soil health and crop productivity.

We aimed to estimate the different salt intakes and evaluate the knowledge and self-awareness about salt among people speaking the Teochew, Teochew-Hakka and Hakka dialects in the Chaoshan region of southern China. DESIGN The study followed a cluster sampling of residents in Chaoshan region. General characteristics, lifestyles, health status as well as knowledge and self-awareness related to salt intake were investigated using a questionnaire. Anthropometric variables as well as Na and K excretion in a 24-h urine collection were measured. SETTING Chaoshan region of China. PARTICIPANTS Four hundred fifteen adults who spoke only one of these three dialects. RESULTS The salt intake of adults who spoke the Teochew, Teochew-Hakka and Hakka dialects was 7·19 (interquartile range (IQR) 5·29-10·17), 9·03 (IQR 6·62-11·54) and 10·12 (IQR 7·61-12·82) g/d, respectively, with significant differences between Teochew and Teochew-Hakka speakers and between Teochew and Hakka speakers (both P less then 0·05). https://www.selleckchem.com/products/iberdomide.html The NaK ratio for adults who spoke the three dialects was 3·00 (IQR 2·00-4·11), 3·50 (IQR 2·64-4·82) and 4·52 (IQR 3·35-5·97), respectively, and differed significantly among the groups (all P less then 0·05). Additionally, the vast quantity of unprocessed Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste pose serious problems in some places, particularly in residential, institutional, industrial or commercial construction hotspots. While several waste quantification methodologies have been proposed in the literature, the quantification of waste generation in India is inadequate. This inadequacy can be attributed to the lack of appropriate hierarchical control mechanism, absence of a common C&D waste estimation method, and the lack of C&D waste processing knowledge among generators, collectors, operators, regulators, and the general public. The C&D Waste Management Rules 2016 were introduced to ensure organized collection, storage, transportation, treatment/processing, and disposal of C&D waste in India and fix responsibilities of all stakeholders for management of C&D waste. This comprehensive research attempts to analyze the existing legislation and challenges, and proposes an information framework for organized collection, storage, treatment/processing, and disposal of C&D waste. The C&D waste processing mechanism, potential application of recycled C&D waste products, its limitations, and the best practices of C&D waste management in India are important constituents of the proposed framework.Annually 500 M t organic wastes are produced in India from the agriculture sector. Transportation of bulky organic manures for centralized collection, processing and distribution to farms is cost prohibitive. Hence, recycling of agricultural wastes using vermicompost technology at the farm level is a practical way of managing agriwaste for meeting the plant nutrient requirement. Our experience with a 1.584 ha farm for three years (2015-2016 to 2017-2018) revealed that 8.1 t vermicompost was produced in three batches from 24 t agriwastes produced within the farm area. The system productivity by recycling these farm generated agriwastes and run-off water was 18.05 t (≈11.4 t ha-1) rice equivalent yield which was higher by 2.6 times as compared to rice fallow (4.46 t ha-1). Also, the net return from this system (Indian rupees 70141 ha-1) was higher by 2.3 times, after considering the fixed cost towards construction of a water recycling pond. An increase in carbon stock in soil for the four years study period was 0.66 Mg ha-1 year-1 with the agriwaste recycling system under organic nutrition. For the inorganic fertilizer plot, the increase in carbon stock was 0.53 Mg ha-1 year-1. A decrease in bulk density from 1.56 to 1.46 Mg m-3, increase in water holding capacity from 0.43 to 0.52 cm3 cm-3 and increase in available P and K content in soil from 38.0 and 174.7 kg ha-1 to 45.8 and 186.5 kg ha-1, respectively, were noted. Thus, recycling of agricultural waste at the farm level is useful in improving soil health and crop productivity.

  • An efficient process for recycling waste LiMn2O4 cathode material is proposed in this research. This report constitutes low-temperature (NH4)2SO4 calcination mechanisms and water-leaching characteristics of the calcined samples. A calcination temperature range of 420.65-634.12 °C is determined by analysis of the TG-DSC curve under the conditions of heating from 25 to 1000 °C, with a molar ratio of n(2Li + Mn)n(NH4)2SO4 = 11 in air atmosphere. The sample calcined at 600 °C for 45 min when the excess coefficient of the (NH4)2SO4 was 1.1 exhibits optimal water-leaching efficiencies of the Li and Mn elements, which are approximately 100% and 96.73%, respectively. The macro-reaction mechanism of the waste LiMn2O4 cathode material calcined with (NH4)2SO4 is determined as the liquid-solid reaction by analysing the apparent morphologies of the calcined samples and their water-leaching residues under different calcination conditions. Moreover, the micro-reaction mechanism is investigated by analysing the phases of the calcined samples and their water-leaching residues under different calcination conditions. The free high-energy H+ released by the decomposition of the NH4+ generated by the molten (NH4)2SO4 play a key role in the entire calcination process. The spinel structure of the LiMn2O4 is broken and Li+ is released owing to the H+ bombarding the MnO bonds. Waste fraction characterisation has determined that aluminium is mainly found in small-size particles ( less then 2 mm) with the mass fraction higher than 60%. During the research planning the central composite design was used and three operating variables of an electrostatic separator were tested roll speed, voltage and separation splitter position. Results have shown that it is possible to obtain a concentrate with the Al mass fraction of 97.86% at 91.20% recovery. It has been shown that the splitter position has the most significant influence on the grade of concentrate and recovery. It has also been shown that the roll speed individually and the interaction of the roll speed and splitter position have a significant influence on the grade of concentrate. HYPOTHESIS The superhydrophobic lotus leaf has dual-scale surface structures, that is, nano-bumps on micro-mountains. CMFJ was applied through an orogastric cannula at 0, 19, and 23 hours after reserpine injection at doses of 2.5 ml/kg, 5 ml/kg, and 10 ml/kg to groups R+CMFJ2.5, R+CMFJ5, and R+CMFJ10, respectively. The groups control and R received distilled water (10 ml/kg) at the same time points. The open field test (OFT) and the forced swim test (FST) were carried out. In the OFT, crossings and rearings were recorded as a measure of locomotor activity. In the FST, the immobility time served as a measure of depressive-like behavior. RESULTS In the OFT, the number of crossings of rats were significantly reduced (p less then 0.05) by reserpine. CMFJ antagonized the effects of reserpine on rat locomotor activity. In the FST, reserpine caused an insignificant reduction of the immobility time while CMFJ reversed this effect probably by increasing the locomotor activity. CONCLUSION CMFJ reversed reserpine-induced hypokinesia in rats. This effect of CMFJ might be attributed to the polyphenols found in very high concentrations in the juice. RESULTS A positive antibody response (anti-HBs Ab > 10 mIU/ml) was reported in 79.7% (n = 51) of the group of subjects up to one year old, in 70.0% (n = 196) of the subjects in the age range 1 year/1 month to 15 years, and in 39.3% (n = 33) of the subjects 15 years/1 month to 20 years old. Female sex had a better post-vaccination response than male sex with statistically significant relationship between sex and anti-HBs Ab titer (χ2 = 24.76, p less then 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Regardless of the mass immunization against HBV in Bulgaria, the relative share of chronic HBV infections does not show a downward trend. Socio-demographic factors have been found to be important for the initiation and longer duration of breastfeeding. AIM To record the breastfeeding characteristics and to explore possible associations with socio-cultural and demographic factors in a culturally diverse area in Greece. MATERIALS AND METHODS A questionnaire including information about breastfeeding characteristics, medical history and demographics was completed by parents of children in the primary schools of the area. RESULTS The study included 700 school-age children (352 boys), mean age 9.4±1.9 years. Breastfeeding was reported in 54.9% of them, with median (IQR) duration of 120 (range 60-360) days. Prevalence of breastfeeding was slightly higher in semi-urban areas, versus rural or urban settlements, but the duration there was significantly lower (p less then 0.001). Better educated mothers tended to initiate or sustain breastfeeding for a longer period; however, this difference was not statistically significant. Children of the native Muslim minority had been breastfed for a longer time (median duration 360 vs. 120 days, p less then 0.001), however, no difference was noted in prevalence. CONCLUSION Prevalence of breastfeeding in Greece is approximately 55%, similar to previous reports and along with duration is determined by certain socio-cultural factors. AIM To record the breastfeeding characteristics and to explore possible associations with socio-cultural and demographic factors in a culturally diverse area in Greece. MATERIALS AND METHODS A questionnaire including information about breastfeeding characteristics, medical history and demographics was completed by parents of children in the primary schools of the area. RESULTS The study included 700 school-age children (352 boys), mean age 9.4±1.9 years. Breastfeeding was reported in 54.9% of them, with median (IQR) duration of 120 (range 60-360) days. Prevalence of breastfeeding was slightly higher in semi-urban areas, versus rural or urban settlements, but the duration there was significantly lower (p less then 0.001). Better educated mothers tended to initiate or sustain breastfeeding for a longer period; however, this difference was not statistically significant. Children of the native Muslim minority had been breastfed for a longer time (median duration 360 vs. 120 days, p less then 0.001), however, no difference was noted in prevalence. CONCLUSION Prevalence of breastfeeding in Greece is approximately 55%, similar to previous reports and along with duration is determined by certain socio-cultural factors.
