We performed a meta-analysis to provide quantitative estimates of fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) changes in patients following bariatric surgery over 1 year. A systematic search of PubMed, SCOPUS and Web of Science databases was conducted; the pooled weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using a random-effects model. Thirty-four studies including Roux en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), sleeve gastrectomy (SG) biliopancreatic diversion (BPD) and gastric banding (GB) were analyzed. RYGB decreased in body FM (-28.99 kg [31.21, -26.77]) or FM% (-12.73% [-15.14, -10.32]) or FFM (-9.97 kg [-10.93, -9.03]), which were greater than SG and GB. Moreover, the FFM% in RYGB group (11.72% [7.33, 16.11]) was more than SG (5.7% [4.44, 6.95]) and GB (8.1% [6.15, 10.05]) groups. Bariatric surgeries, especially RYGB, might be effective for a decrease in FM and maintenance of FFM in patients with morbid obesity in over 1 year.Glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK-3β) is involved in a variety of diseases such as neurodegenerative diseases, bipolar disorder, and diabetes. In this study, a series of heterobifunctional small molecule proteolysis targeting chimera (PROTAC) were designed and synthesized based on E3 ubiquitin ligase cereblon (CRBN). Most of PROTACs displayed good inhibitory activity, with the IC50 values at the double-digits nanomolar levels and moderate protein degradation ability against GSK-3β. Western-blot data showed compound PG21 can effectively degrade GSK-3β in a dose-dependent manner, which can induce 44.2% protein degradation at 2.8 μM. Further pharmacological experiments revealed that the ability of PG21 to degrade GSK-3β is mediated by the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS). In addition, PG21 protects against glutamate-induced cell death in HT-22 cells. In vivo, pOBz inhibited cerebral MAO activity after middle cerebral artery occlusion with reperfusion in rats, and it reduced cerebral infarct volume, improved neurological function and NeuN expression, and inhibited complement C3 expression and apoptosis. Here, we report the discovery of series of lysosome-targeting covalent anticancer agents by introducing nitrogenous bases to the modified isosteviol skeleton in order to minimize the toxicity and increase the selectivity. By introducing the electrophilic α, β-unsaturated ketones into the A- and D-rings of isosteviol, the cytotoxicity of the obtained compounds were greatly increased. Further nitrogen-containing modifications to the D-ring led to the discovery of novel molecules that targeted lysosomes, and of which, compound 30 was the most potent and selective antiproliferative one to kill A549 cells in vitro and in vivo. Mechanism investigation revealed that compound 30 was trapped into lysosomes and damaged lysosomes to cause cell death.Omega-3-fatty-acids are now increasingly being used for potential beneficial anti-inflammatory effect in the treatment and management of cardiovascular disease. Eicosapentaenoic acid and Docosahexaenoic acid are 2 essential omega-3 fatty acids found predominately in fish and fish oil supplements. Despite the increased use of fish oil products for both primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, the available literature evidence are controversial. We searched through PubMed for studies that have investigated the impact of omega-3 fatty acids on coronary heart disease and mortality. Our systemic review suggests that most studies, which are mostly observational, have found there to be a potential benefit of omega-3 fatty acids on coronary heart disease whereas some other studies have found conflicting results. More randomized controlled studies are warranted with adequate sample size to clearly establish the risk and benefits of omega-3 fatty acids on cardiovascular disease.
Chest computed tomography (CT) scan is frequently used in the diagnosis of COVID-19 pneumonia.
This study investigates the predictive value of CT severity score (CSS) for length-of-stay (LOS) in hospital, initial disease severity, ICU admission, intubation, and mortality.

Total of 121 patients (60±16 years), including 54 women and 67 men, with positive RT-PCR tests were enrolled. We found a significant but weak correlation between CSS and qSOFA, as a measure of disease severity (r 0.261, p=0.003). No significant association was demonstrated between CSS and LOS. Patients with CSS>8 had at least three-fold higher risk of ICU admission, intubation, and mortality.

To enhance the research availability of relevant clinical specimens, we developed the Living BioBank (LBB) solution, which allows for just-in-time capture and delivery of phenotyped surplus laboratory medicine specimens. The LBB is a system-of-systems integrating research feasibility databases in i2b2, a real-time clinical data warehouse, and an informatics system for institutional research services management (SPARC). LBB delivers deidentified clinical data and laboratory specimens. We further present an extension to our solution, the Living µBiome Bank, that allows the user to request and receive phenotyped specimen microbiome data. We discuss the details of the implementation of the LBB system and the necessary regulatory oversight for this solution. The conducted institutional focus group of translational investigators indicates an overall positive sentiment towards potential scientific results generated with the use of LBB. Reference implementation of LBB is available at https//LivingBioBank.musc.edu.IL@MOF (IL ionic liquid; MOF metal-organic framework) materials have been proposed as a candidate for solid-state electrolytes, combining the inherent non-flammability and high thermal and chemical stability of the ionic liquid with the host-guest interactions of the MOF. In this work, we compare the structure and ionic conductivity of a sodium ion containing IL@MOF composite formed from a microcrystalline powder of the zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF), ZIF-8 with a hierarchically porous sample of ZIF-8 containing both micro- and mesopores from a sol-gel synthesis. Although the crystallographic structures were shown to be the same by X-ray diffraction, significant differences in particle size, packing and morphology were identified by electron microscopy techniques which highlight the origins of the hierarchical porosity. After incorporation of Na0.1EMIM0.9TFSI (abbreviated to NaIL; EMIM = 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium; TFSI = bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide), the hierarchically porous composite exhibited a 40% greater filling capacity than the purely microporous sample which was confirmed by elemental analysis and digestive proton NMR. Finally, the ionic conductivity properties of the composite materials were probed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results showed that despite the 40% increased loading of NaIL in the NaIL@ZIF-8micro sample, the ionic conductivities at 25 °C were 8.4 × 10-6 and 1.6 × 10-5 S cm-1 for NaIL@ZIF-8meso and NaIL@ZIF-8micro respectively. These results exemplify the importance of the long range, continuous ion pathways contributed by the microcrystalline pores, as well as the limited contribution from the discontinuous mesopores to the overall ionic conductivity.Placental trophoblast cells invasion into the maternal uterus is an essential and complex event in the formation of the maternal-fetal interface. Commonly used two-dimensional (2D) cell invasion tools do not accurately represent the in vivo cell invasion microenvironment. Three-dimensional (3D) silicone polymer polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microfluidic platforms are an emerging technology in developing organ-on-a-chip models. Here, we present a placenta-on-a-chip platform that enables the evaluation of trophoblast invasion with intraluminal flow within an engineered PDMS 3D microfluidic chip. This platform reproduces key elements of the placental microenvironment, including endothelial and trophoblast cells, layered with an extracellular matrix, and incorporates dynamic medium flow while allowing for real-time monitoring, imaging, evaluation of trophoblast cell invasion, and heterocellular cell-to-cell interactions. Coupled with fluorescent cell tagging and flow cytometry, this platform also allows collection of the invasive cells. This will help our understanding of pathways that regulate trophoblast cell invasion and may prove important for toxicological screening of exposures that interfere with invasiveness in a complex organ such as the placenta.The synthesis and characterization of heteromultimetallic complexes has been one of the biggest challenges faced by inorganic chemists in the last few years. Here, the physical nature behind the relative stability of tri-heteronuclear complexes, involving the [M(PR3)]+ (M = Au(i), Ag(i) and Cu(i); and R = Ph and H) cation bridged by the [Fe(CO)4]2- anion, at the relativistic DFT-D3 level of theory is presented. Although the synthetic route to afford the [Fe(CO)4(AuPPh3)2] complex has been known for a long time, information about its copper and silver counterparts is scarce. The bonding situation is addressed via Kohn-Sham molecular orbitals coupled with a canonical energy decomposition analysis as the primary technique. The results show that complexes whose metal portion M-Fe-M is **** are more stable than linear ones. This stems from the dispersive interactions between the phenyl groups, but this also supports the presence of aurophilic d10-d10 interactions. The bonding between the [Fe(CO)4]2- and [Au-PPh3]+ fragments has a chiefly electrostatic character, but orbital interactions also represent a non-negligible role, as evidenced by the presence of (i) σ-donation from the iron-carbonyl groups to the metal-phosphorus fragment; (ii) small π-donation from the metal to the iron center; and (iii) inner fragment polarization. The description of the metal-metal bonding situation in these complexes provides valuable information, useful to guide the synthesis of unprecedented multimetallic complexes containing coinage metals and other transition metals.

This study aimed to review qualitative studies on perceptions of home cooking. A systematic search was conducted in Scopus and SciELO databases using English and Portuguese terms related to home cooking, without date or language restrictions. Twenty-six articles, published between 2004 and 2017, investigated, whether as a primary objective or as a secondary finding, the perceptions of individuals on home cooking. More than half of the studies were conducted in English-speaking countries. Study participants included women and men, adults and seniors as well as residents of urban and rural areas, Eastern and Western countries, and developing and developed nations. Thematic analysis showed that home cooking has different interpretations and meanings in diverse contexts and revealed differences in how individuals plan and cook their meals at home. Cognitive, practical, affective, and emotional factors are the major motivators to home meal preparation. Having a cooking role model in the family, cooking confidence and skills, and living alone were reported as facilitators of home cooking. Participated of this study 43 children with an allocation ratio of 11 between groups (Intervention Group [IG], N = 21; Control Group [CG], N = 22) from a public school in the city of Sao Paulo participated in the study. Behaviors were evaluated by using standardized questionnaires (PAS, CBCL, SDQ, SCBE) assessing the behavioral profile of the children at three different periods; baseline (T0), one month (T1) and three months (T2) after the intervention. It was observed a reduction in the intensity of anxiety symptoms in the IG after the intervention but with no significant effect. Overall, there were no significant differences between the IG and the CG in most behaviors on all periods evaluated. On both Intention-to-Treat analyses also it was not detected significant effects of the intervention. This is the first Brazilian study evaluating the effects of FunFRIENDS program and the implications of these findings are discussed and its significance for future research.
This study aimed to review qualitative studies on perceptions of home cooking. A systematic search was conducted in Scopus and SciELO databases using English and Portuguese terms related to home cooking, without date or language restrictions. Twenty-six articles, published between 2004 and 2017, investigated, whether as a primary objective or as a secondary finding, the perceptions of individuals on home cooking. More than half of the studies were conducted in English-speaking countries. Study participants included women and men, adults and seniors as well as residents of urban and rural areas, Eastern and Western countries, and developing and developed nations. Thematic analysis showed that home cooking has different interpretations and meanings in diverse contexts and revealed differences in how individuals plan and cook their meals at home. Cognitive, practical, affective, and emotional factors are the major motivators to home meal preparation. Having a cooking role model in the family, cooking confidence and skills, and living alone were reported as facilitators of home cooking. Tokyo Dental College started oral cancer screening in cooperation with a local dental association in 1992. Reveal the usefulness of Countermeasure and Opportunistic Screening Systems for Oral Cancer. The actual results of countermeasure and opportunistic oral cancer screening systems are reported.
Countermeasure screening for the public was performed in each region, and opportunistic screening was performed in a general dental clinic of a cooperating physician.
In countermeasure screening, 19,721 persons were checked from 1992 to 2018; the gender ratio was 13. The close examination rate was 4.45%. The detection rates of oral cancer and oral potentially malignant disorders were 0.13% and 1.85%, respectively. In opportunistic screening, 29,912 persons were checked from 2006 to 2018; the gender ratio was 23. The close examination rate was 2.33%. The detection rates of oral cancer and oral potentially malignant disorders were 0.08% and 2.15%, respectively. The close examination rate was significantly lower in opportunistic screening than in countermeasure screening. The oral cancer detection rates and the positive predictive value for cancer were equivalent. In addition, the detection rate of oral potentially malignant disorders was significantly higher in opportunistic screening than in countermeasure screening.

Patients with human papillomavirus (HPV) associated squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx (SCC-OP) have improved overall survival (OS) after distant metastasis (DM) compared to HPV negative patients. These patients may be appropriate candidates for enrollment on clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of metastasis-directed therapy (MDT). This study seeks to identify prognostic factors associated with OS after DM, which could serve as enrollment criteria for such trials.
From an IRB approved multi-institutional database, we retrospectively identified patients with HPV/p16 positive SCC-OP diagnosed between 2001 and 2018. Patterns of distant failure were assessed, including number of lesions at diagnosis and sites of involvement. The primary outcome was OS after DM. Prognostic factors for OS after DM were identified with Cox proportional hazards. Stepwise approach was used for multivariable analysis.
We identified 621 patients with HPV-associated SCC-OP, of whom 82 (13.2%) were diagnosed with DM. Median OS after DM was 14.6months. On multivariable analysis, smoking history and number of lesions were significantly associated with prolonged OS. Median OS after DM by smoking (never vs ever) was 37.6 vs 11.2months (p=0.006), and by lesion number (1 vs 2-4 vs 5 or more) was 41.2 vs 17.2 vs 10.8months (p=0.007).
Among patients with newly diagnosed metastatic HPV-associated SCC-OP, lesion number and smoking status were associated with significantly prolonged overall survival. These factors should be incorporated into the design of clinical trials investigating the utility of MDT, with or without systemic therapy, in this population.

Patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) display a significant risk of synchronous primary neoplasia (SPN) which could impact their management. The aims of this study were to evaluate the risk and distribution of SPN in OPSCC patients according to their HPV (p16) status, the predictive factors of SPN and the impact of SPN on therapeutic strategy and oncologic outcomes.
All OPSCC patients treated from 2009 to 2014 were included in this multicentric retrospective study. Univariate analyses were conducted using Chi-2 and Fisher exact tests. For multivariate analyses, all variables associated with a p≤0.10 in univariate analysis were included in logistic regression models.
Among the 1291 patients included in this study, 75 (5.8%) displayed a SPN which was preferentially located in the upper aerodigestive tract, lung and esophagus. Comorbidity level (p=0.03), alcohol (p=0.005) and tobacco (p=0.01) consumptions, and p16 tumor status (p<0.0001) were significant predictors of SPN. In multivariate analysis, p16+status was significantly associated with a lower risk of SPN (OR=0.251, IC95% [0.133;0.474]). Preoperative screening had a key role in planning elective surgical activity for head and neck cancer (HNC) during the COVID-19 pandemic.
All patients undergoing surgery for HNC at two Italian referral hospitals (University of Padua and National Cancer Institute [NCI]) during the peak of the COVID-19 epidemic in Italy were included. Accuracy of screening protocols was assessed.
In the Padua protocol, 41 patients were screened by pharyngeal swab. The entire sample (100%) was admitted to surgery, diagnostic accuracy was 100%. In the NCI protocol, 23 patients underwent a telephone interview, blood test, and chest CT. Twenty patients (87%) were negative and were directly admitted to surgery. In the remaining 3 (13%), pharyngeal swab was performed. The screening was repeated until a negative chest CT was found. Diagnostic accuracy was 85%.

Significant spatial clustering of viruses of the same type was observed within 14-day time intervals at distances of up to 6.8 km (p less then 0.05). These results suggest that arbovirus risk is not uniformly distributed within cities during co-circulation. Findings may guide outbreak preparedness and response efforts by highlighting the clustered nature of transmission of co-circulating arboviruses at the neighborhood level. The potential for competitive interactions between the arboviruses should be further investigated.
The aim was to analyse the tumor expression of Notch1, Hes1, Ascl1, and DLL3 in Small-Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC) and each such biomarker's potential association with clinical characteristics and prognosis after platinum-doublet chemotherapy (PDCT).
The protein expression of the biomarkers was evaluated using immunohistochemistry. Patients were categorized according to their sensitivity to first line PDCT with a Progression-free survival (PFS) ≥ 3 months after completion of treatment considered "sensitive" and < 3 months after completion of treatment considered "refractory". PFS and overall survival were computed using Kaplan-Meier curves with 95% confidence interval.
The study included 46 patients, with 21 and 25 of the patients having "sensitive" and "refractory" disease, respectively. The majority of patients had a high DLL3 expression (n = 38), while a minority had Notch 1-high expression (n = 10). The chi-square test showed that there was a statistically significant negative association between Notce association between Notch1 and Ascl1 expression (p = 0.013). However, there are limited records on the exploration of novel biomarkers for seminoma. Hence, we aimed to identify new biomarkers associated with overall survival in seminoma. mRNA-seq and clinical traits of TGCTs were downloaded from UCSC XENA and analyzed by weighted gene co-expression network analysis. After intersection with differentially expressed genes in GSE8607, common genes were subjected to protein-protein interaction (PPI) network construction and enrichment analyses. Then, the top 10 common genes were investigated by Kaplan-Meier (KM) survival analyses and univariate Cox regression analyses. Ultimately, TYROBP, CD68, and ITGAM were considered three prognostic biomarkers in seminoma. Based on correlation analysis between these genes and immune infiltrates, we suggest that the three biomarkers influence the survival of seminoma patients, possibly through regulating the infiltration of immune cells. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that TYROBP, CD68, and ITGAM could be regarded as prognostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets for seminoma patients.
Economic recessions carry an impact on population health and access to care; less is known on how health systems adapt to the conditions brought by a downturn. This particularly matters now that the COVID-19 epidemic is putting health systems under stress. Brazil is one of the world's most affected countries, and its health system was already experiencing the aftermath of the 2015 recession.
Between 2018 and 2019 we conducted 46 semi-structured interviews with health practitioners, managers and policy-makers to explore the impact of the 2015 recession on public and private providers in prosperous (São Paulo) and impoverished (Maranhão) states in Brazil. Thematic analysis was employed to identify drivers and consequences of system adaptation and coping strategies. Nvivo software was used to aid data collection and analysis. We followed the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research to provide an account of the findings.

Post-thaw viability, assessed by both trypan blue and flow cytometry, showed no significant differences between the techniques. Similarly, there was no negative effect of the duration of frozen storage, donor age at sample collection or donor gender on post-thaw viability using either thawing method. The implication of these results is that the cryopreservation protocol chosen initially remains robust and appropriate for use with a wide range of donors. The positive response of the samples to water-free thawing offers potential benefits for clinical situations by removing the subjective element inherent in water bath thawing and eliminating possible contamination issues.
Significant spatial clustering of viruses of the same type was observed within 14-day time intervals at distances of up to 6.8 km (p less then 0.05). These results suggest that arbovirus risk is not uniformly distributed within cities during co-circulation. Findings may guide outbreak preparedness and response efforts by highlighting the clustered nature of transmission of co-circulating arboviruses at the neighborhood level. The potential for competitive interactions between the arboviruses should be further investigated. The aim was to analyse the tumor expression of Notch1, Hes1, Ascl1, and DLL3 in Small-Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC) and each such biomarker's potential association with clinical characteristics and prognosis after platinum-doublet chemotherapy (PDCT). The protein expression of the biomarkers was evaluated using immunohistochemistry. Patients were categorized according to their sensitivity to first line PDCT with a Progression-free survival (PFS) ≥ 3 months after completion of treatment considered "sensitive" and < 3 months after completion of treatment considered "refractory". PFS and overall survival were computed using Kaplan-Meier curves with 95% confidence interval. The study included 46 patients, with 21 and 25 of the patients having "sensitive" and "refractory" disease, respectively. The majority of patients had a high DLL3 expression (n = 38), while a minority had Notch 1-high expression (n = 10). The chi-square test showed that there was a statistically significant negative association between Notce association between Notch1 and Ascl1 expression (p = 0.013). Hence, we aimed to identify new biomarkers associated with overall survival in seminoma. mRNA-seq and clinical traits of TGCTs were downloaded from UCSC XENA and analyzed by weighted gene co-expression network analysis. After intersection with differentially expressed genes in GSE8607, common genes were subjected to protein-protein interaction (PPI) network construction and enrichment analyses. Then, the top 10 common genes were investigated by Kaplan-Meier (KM) survival analyses and univariate Cox regression analyses. Ultimately, TYROBP, CD68, and ITGAM were considered three prognostic biomarkers in seminoma. Based on correlation analysis between these genes and immune infiltrates, we suggest that the three biomarkers influence the survival of seminoma patients, possibly through regulating the infiltration of immune cells. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that TYROBP, CD68, and ITGAM could be regarded as prognostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets for seminoma patients. This particularly matters now that the COVID-19 epidemic is putting health systems under stress. Between 2018 and 2019 we conducted 46 semi-structured interviews with health practitioners, managers and policy-makers to explore the impact of the 2015 recession on public and private providers in prosperous (São Paulo) and impoverished (Maranhão) states in Brazil. Thematic analysis was employed to identify drivers and consequences of system adaptation and coping strategies. Nvivo software was used to aid data collection and analysis. Complementing recently published functional analyses in a zebrafish model, these data suggest that LCC most often occurs due to combinatorial severe and milder mutations, with the latter mostly affecting 3' end processing of precursor-U8.Engineered DNA frameworks have been extensively exploited as affinity scaffolds for drug delivery. However, few studies focus on the rational design to comprehensively improve their stability, internalization kinetics, and drug loading efficiency. Herein, DNA framework-based hybrid nanomaterials are rationally engineered by using a molecular docking tool, where the framework acts as a template to support conjugated polymers. The hybrid materials exhibit high stability in biofluids owning to the multiple interactions between DNA and cationic conjugated polymer. Through molecular docking, it is found that a specific structure of the conjugated polymer at major grooves of DNA gives rise to a unique pocket for small-molecular drug doxorubicin (DOX) yielding lower binding energy than conventional DOX binding sites. This increases the binding affinity of DOX, allowing for high drug loading content and efficiency, and preventing drug leakage under physiological condition. As a proof of concept, the hybrid nanomaterials equipped with aptamer are used to carry DOX and antisense oligonucleotide G3139, which effectively inhibits solid tumor growth and shows negligible side effects on ****. AE related to central activation were seen at doses ≥ 75 mg. At 25 and 75 mg, central penetration of mevidalen was confirmed by measurement of mevidalen in cerebrospinal fluid. In the MAD study, once-daily doses of mevidalen at 15-150 mg for 14 days showed dose-proportional PK. Acute dose-dependent increases in SBP, DBP, and PR were observed on initial administration, but with repeated dosing the effects diminished and returned toward baseline levels. Early diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) remains challenging because of the high prevalence of chronic **** pain in patients initially treated by nonrheumatology health care providers (HCPs). We assessed the patient pathway to rheumatology referral, including HCP recognition of inflammatory **** pain (IBP) and other features suggestive of AS, diagnostic workup, treatment, and referral to a specialist with the goal of identifying barriers to patient referral to a rheumatologist.
US HCPs from 10 specialties were invited to participate in a cross-sectional web-based survey on clinical characteristics and diagnostic measures leading to IBP suspicion and the subsequent referral process. Eligible HCPs were actively practicing and had referred a patient with suspected IBP or ocular findings (ophthalmology only) within 12 months. Data were analyzed descriptively.
Of 1690 HCPs, 61% identified morning stiffness lasting more than30 minutes, 29% sleep disturbance due to **** pain, and 28% pain that improves with activity as features suggestive of IBP. Nearly two-thirds of primary care HCPs reported that they were the first HCPs consulted by patients with suspected IBP. Among HCPs ordering diagnostic blood work, approximately90% selected antinuclear antibody and rheumatoid factor, whereas 76% selected human leukocyte antigen B27. Almost 40% would treat patients with suspected IBP themselves. HCPs cited lack of adequate specialists nearby (35.1%), insurance restrictions (47.1%), and long wait time (77.0%) as barriers to early referral.

Following a severe brain injury (BI), some literate individuals who require augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) strategies to support communication may benefit from the use of onscreen keyboards to generate text. A range of layouts are available to these individuals within specialized communication software. However, a paucity of information is available to describe user preferences, user perceptions, as well as the visual-cognitive processing demands of such layouts. Such information is critical to guide clinical decision-making for keyboard selection and to provide patient-centered services. This study (a) described the preferences and perceptions of two onscreen keyboard layouts (QWERTY and alphabetic) and (b) used eye-tracking analysis to investigate the visual-cognitive processing demands between these onscreen keyboards for individuals with and without BI. https://www.selleckchem.com/mTOR.html Results indicated participants in both groups held a strong preference for QWERTY keyboard interfaces and had extensive prior experience using the QWERTY keyboard layout on mobile devices. Airway pressure in the first 100ms of an occluded inspiration (P0.1) evaluates the respiratory center activity, increasing in the presence of respiratory muscle weakness. It is uncertain if its activity can compensate for respiratory muscles weakness in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Consecutive ALS patients with P0.1 evaluated at first visit were included. Depending on P0.1 percentile, patients were divided in three groups G1 (<25th percentile); G2 (25th-74th percentiles); G3 (≥75th percentile); two subgroups were further considered SG0 (<10th percentile); SG1 (>90th percentile). Body mass index (BMI), functional ALS rating scale and its subscores, respiratory function tests, including forced vital capacity, maximal inspiratory (MIP) and expiratory pressures, percentage of P0.1 (%P0.1), blood gas analyses, phrenic nerve motor amplitude (MeanPhrenAmpl) were compared. P0.1/MIP and %P0.1 predictors were explored by linear and multinomial logistic regression analyses.

Hyperselective neurectomy is used to treat spastic arm paralysis. The aim of the study was to analyze the nerve branching patterns of elbow and wrist flexors/pronator to inform hyperselective neurectomy approached.
Eighteen upper extremities of fresh cadaver specimen were dissected. The number of motor branches from the musculocutaneous nerve to biceps brachii and brachialis, median nerve to pronator teres, flexor carpi radialis and ulnar nerve to flexor carpi ulnaris were counted. The origin site of each primary motor branch was documented.
Either biceps or brachialis was innervated by one or two primary motor branches. Pronator teres was innervated by one to three motor trunks and the pattern for flexor carpi radialis was a common trunk with other branches. The origin of the biceps and brachialis nerve trunk was located approximately 30% to 60% of the length of the arm. The median nerve branched to pronator teres and flexor carpi radialis at the region about 34mm (SD 18.8mm) above and 50mm (SD 14.9mm) below the medial epicondyle. Flexor carpi ulnaris was innervated by one to three motor trunks and the mean distance from the medial epicondyle to the origin of flexor carpi ulnaris nerve on ulnar nerve was 18.7 mm (SD 6.5mm).

Endoscopic resection can be used for removing colloid cysts as a substitute for open craniotomy. Cerebral vasospasm, a possible complication of the craniotomy procedure, has not been reported as a complication of endoscopic removal of colloid cysts.
A 58-year-old man developed the worst headache of his life. The CT and MRI showed a 1.3 cm midline third ventricular cyst at the level of the foramen of Monro, consistent with a colloid cyst. The patient elected to undergo an endoscopic resection of the colloid cyst. The image-guided frameless stereotactic endoscopic colloid cyst resection proceeded without events. Postoperative MRI showed a gross total resection. The patient continued to improve until post-operative day #9 when he experienced an episode of slurred speech and several episodes of legs buckling. An MRI did not show a stroke. A CT angiogram showed diffuse vasospasm, including the basilar artery and bilateral middle cerebral arteries, when compared to the patient's preoperative MRA. The patient's antihypertensive medications were stopped. The patient was started on Nimodipine, 60 mg every 4 hours, and triple H therapy (Hypertension, Hypervolemia, and Hemodilution) was applied. His blood pressure rose and his neurologic exam improved over several days. The patient returned to his baseline in 14 days without any neurological deficits. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of a patient undergoing endoscopic colloid cyst resection that was complicated by diffuse cerebral vasospasm.

The number of motor branches from the musculocutaneous nerve to biceps brachii and brachialis, median nerve to pronator teres, flexor carpi radialis and ulnar nerve to flexor carpi ulnaris were counted. The origin site of each primary motor branch was documented. Either biceps or brachialis was innervated by one or two primary motor branches. Pronator teres was innervated by one to three motor trunks and the pattern for flexor carpi radialis was a common trunk with other branches. The origin of the biceps and brachialis nerve trunk was located approximately 30% to 60% of the length of the arm. The median nerve branched to pronator teres and flexor carpi radialis at the region about 34mm (SD 18.8mm) above and 50mm (SD 14.9mm) below the medial epicondyle. Flexor carpi ulnaris was innervated by one to three motor trunks and the mean distance from the medial epicondyle to the origin of flexor carpi ulnaris nerve on ulnar nerve was 18.7 mm (SD 6.5mm). Cerebral vasospasm, a possible complication of the craniotomy procedure, has not been reported as a complication of endoscopic removal of colloid cysts. A 58-year-old man developed the worst headache of his life. The CT and MRI showed a 1.3 cm midline third ventricular cyst at the level of the foramen of Monro, consistent with a colloid cyst. The patient elected to undergo an endoscopic resection of the colloid cyst. The image-guided frameless stereotactic endoscopic colloid cyst resection proceeded without events. Postoperative MRI showed a gross total resection. The patient continued to improve until post-operative day #9 when he experienced an episode of slurred speech and several episodes of legs buckling. An MRI did not show a stroke. A CT angiogram showed diffuse vasospasm, including the basilar artery and bilateral middle cerebral arteries, when compared to the patient's preoperative MRA. The patient's antihypertensive medications were stopped. The patient was started on Nimodipine, 60 mg every 4 hours, and triple H therapy (Hypertension, Hypervolemia, and Hemodilution) was applied. His blood pressure rose and his neurologic exam improved over several days. The patient returned to his baseline in 14 days without any neurological deficits. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of a patient undergoing endoscopic colloid cyst resection that was complicated by diffuse cerebral vasospasm. Currently, there is a growing interest in the study of environmental degradation pathways of organic contaminants such as pesticides, with the objective to better understand their potential risk for environmental systems and living organisms. In this context, DFT (conceptual density functional theory) and predictive methods may systematically be used to simplify and accelerate the elucidation of environmental degradation. Taking advantage of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect along with good conductivity of AuNPs, the developed AuNP/Ag2S/fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) owns **** higher photoelectric conversion efficiency, and the photocurrent is 5.3 times that of Ag2S FTO. Subsequently, the NIR-driven AuNP/Ag2S/FTO was used to immobilize antibodies (Abs) for **-LR. Their specificity to **-LR led to steric effects and limited surface electron transfer, causing reduce of the photocurrent. Through AuNP/Ag2S-composite amplification and immunological specificity, the PEC immunosensor can quantitatively measure **-LR with a wide linear range, 10 pg L-1 to 10 μg L-1, and a **** low detection limit, 7 pg L-1 (S/N = 3). Finally, the NIR PEC sensor was employed in the analysis of **-LR contents in fish. In this study, a solid-phase microextraction (SPME) arrow configuration using a thick sorbent coating (120 μm, PDMS/CWR) was applied to enrich selected terpenes, namely α-pinene, limonene, linalool, and citronellol, in fish tissue (Oreochromis niloticus). Due to the thicker coating of the SPME arrow, a longer extraction time of 60 min was required to reach equilibrium extraction in comparison to the traditional fiber configuration. SPME conditions such as extraction temperature (60 °C), desorption temperature (250 °C), and salt effect (10% NaCl) were optimized for the developed application using the arrow configuration. The developed method exhibited good linearity at a concentration range of 5.0-500.0 μg L-1 for α-pinene and limonene, and 50.0-500.0 μg L-1 for linalool and citronellol. In addition, the coefficients of determination (R2) for all terpenes ranged from 0.9990 to 0.9999. The developed method was shown to be robust with good inter-day reproducibility in the range of 3.6-8.3%. Method sensitivity was assessed in terms of limits of detection (LODs) and limits of quantification (LOQs), with higher sensitivity achieved for α-pinene and limonene (LODs of 1.7 μg L-1) in comparison to linalool (LOD, 5.0 μg L-1) and citronellol (LOD, 17.0 μg L-1). Due to the extent of conjugative rings, the hydrophobic hydrocarbon chain, and anion exchange sites of 9-methylacridinium and 9-undecylacridinium group on the silica gel of columns, mixed-mode stationary phases were designed with multiple interactions including π-π stacking interaction, reverse phase, hydrophilic interaction, and anion exchange. According to the type of acridine, different interactions may be formed in the target column. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), alkylbenzenes, pyridines and parabens were chromatographed on π-π stacking modes and RPLC, where anion exchange sites can be applied for the separation of inorganic anions on AEC mode. Considering the structure of the stationary phases, these columns were used to separate organic compounds with higher polarity on the HILIC retention. The performance of the columns was investigated by the chromatographic parameters in terms of column efficiency (N/m), asymmetry factor (Af), retention factor (k), and resolution (Rs). The mixed-mode stationary phases can be successfully employed to conduct chromatographic separation on a wide range of samples with a single column.

We present in this work an array of microfluidic valves altogether with a corresponding custom control interface. This microfluidic network is an integrated drug delivery system intended for Organ-On-Chip (OOC) applications. Recent research works have achieved high-quality OOC platforms. The latter platforms require an increasing complexity and efficient and flexibile drug delivery systems. As many organs can be integrated in a single chip, a large number of micro-fluidic channels is needed to access various specific locations. Thus, we propose to drive the expected large number of switching valves with an embedded on-chip controller. The presented system includes a control interface of 5n channels using n-line control unit.Thermosensitive liposomes (TSL) are nanoparticles that can encapsulate therapeutic drugs, and release those drugs when exposed to hyperthermic temperatures (>40 °C). Combined with localized hyperthermia, TSL enable focused drug delivery. In this study, we created a three-dimensional (3D) computer model for simulating delivery with TSL-encapsulated doxorubicin (TSL-Dox) to mouse tumors. A mouse hind limb was scanned by a 3D scanner and the resulting geometry was imported into finite element modeling software, with a virtual tumor added. Then, heating by a surface probe was simulated. Further, a drug delivery model was coupled to the heat transfer model to simulate drug delivery kinetics. For comparison, experimental studies in gel phantoms and in vivo fluorescence imaging studies in **** carrying lung tumor xenografts were performed. We report the tissue temperature profile, drug concentration profile and compare the experimental studies with the computer model. The thermistor produced very localized heating that resulted in highest drug delivery to regions near the probe. The average tumor temperature was 38.2˚C (range 34.4-43.4˚C), and produced an average tumor drug concentration of 11.8 µg/g (0.3-28.1 µg/g) after 15 min heating, and 25.6 µg/g (0.3-52 µg/g), after 60 min heating. The computer model reproduced the temperature profile compared to phantom experiments (mean error 0.71 °C, range 0.59-1.25 °C), as well as drug delivery profile as compared to in vivo studies. Our results suggest feasibility of using this approach to model drug delivery in preclinical studies with accurate model geometry.
Our primary goal was to evaluate the performance of a new high-efficiency electric fence energizer unit using resistive load changes. Our secondary goal was to test for compliance with the classical energy limits and the newer charge-based limits for output.
We tested 4 units of the Nemtek Druid energizer with 2 channels each. We used a wide load-resistance range to cover the worst-case scenario of a barefoot child making a chest contact (400 Ω) up to an adult merely touching the fence (2 kΩ).
The energy output was quite consistent between the 8 sources. Even at the lowest resistance, 400 Ω, the outputs were well below the IEC 60335-2-76 limit of 5 J/pulse. This article presents an innovative approach for detecting pacemaker pulses at sampling frequency as low as 125Hz. The proposed method is validated in wide range of simulated clinical ECG conditions such as arrhythmia (sinus rhythms, supraventricular rhythms, and AV blocks), pulse amplitudes (~100µV to ~3mV), pulse durations (~100µs to ~2ms), pacemaker modes and types (fixed-rate or on-demand single chamber, dual chamber, and bi-ventricular pacing), and physiological noise (tremor). The proposed algorithm demonstrates clinically acceptable detection accuracies with sensitivity and PPV of 98.1 ± 4.4 % and 100 %, respectively. In conclusion, the approach is well suited for integration in long-term wearable ECG sensor devices operating at a low sample frequency to monitor pacemaker function.Clinical Relevance- The proposed system enables real-time long-term continuous assessment of the proper functioning of implanted pacemaker and progression of treatment for cardiac conditions using battery-powered wearable ECG monitors.Repair of dissected aorta requires remodeling the structure of the media. Modeling approaches specific to endovascular stenting for aortic dissection have been reported. We created a goat model of descending thoracic aortic dissection and reproduced its morphological characteristics in a **** circulatory system. The purpose of this study was to examine a newly developed aortic stent which was capable of installing to the aortic dissected lesion for biomedical hemodynamics point of view. In this study, we examined the changes in hemodynamics of dissected lesions and the amelioration by endovascular stent intervention. Firstly, we performed animal experiments with the dissected aorta and examined the effects of stenting on volumetric changes in the false lumen. Secondly, we made several types of 3-D stereolithographic dissected aortic models with silicone rubber membrane between the false and the true lumens. Then, the hemodynamic characteristics in each model were evaluated in the pulsatile flow conditions in a **** circulatory system. These modelling approaches enabled the quantitative examination of post-therapeutic effects of stenting followed by elucidating of hemodynamic changes in the vicinity of stents, which may follow the management of clinical amelioration of interventional treatment with aortic stenting.Clinical Relevance- This study represents a modelling approach of the dissected aorta for endovascular intervention using stenting followed by the examination of false lumen volumetric changes resulting in the deterioration of pressure increase in diseased lesions.
