Lignin is the second most abundant natural biopolymer, which is a potential alternative to conventional fossil fuels. It is also a promising material for the recovery of valuable chemicals such as aromatic compounds as well as an important biomarker for terrestrial organic matter. Lignin is currently produced in large quantities as a by-product of chemical pulping and cellulosic ethanol processes. Consequently, analytical methods are required to assess the content of valuable chemicals contained in these complex lignin wastes. This review is devoted to the application of mass spectrometry, including data analysis strategies, for the elemental and structural elucidation of lignin products. We describe and critically evaluate how these methods have contributed to progress and trends in the utilization of lignin in chemical synthesis, materials, energy, and geochemistry.While early empiric antibiotic therapy is beneficial for patients presenting with sepsis, the presentation of sepsis from Clostridioides difficile (formerly Clostridium difficile) infection (CDI) has not been well studied in large cohorts. We sought to determine whether the combination of extreme leukocytosis and diarrhea was strongly predictive of CDI in a cohort of 8659 patients admitted to the intensive care unit. We found that CDI was present in 15.0% (95% CI, 12.1-18.3%) of patients with extreme leukocytosis and diarrhea and that mortality for those with CDI, diarrhea, and extreme leukocytosis was 33.8% (95% CI, 23.2-44.3%). These data support consideration of empiric treatment for CDI in unstable critically ill patients with extreme leukocytosis and diarrhea, along with treatment of other possible sources of sepsis as appropriate. Empiric treatment for CDI can usually be discontinued promptly, along with narrowing of other broad-spectrum antimicrobial coverage, if a sensitive C. difficile test is negative.Low-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma (LGMS) is a mesenchymal tumor of myofibroblasts that occurs more frequently in adults. A series of three cases is presented to illustrate that LGMS may also occur within the oral cavity in children and adolescents. The first case (Case 1) occurred intra-osseously in the mandible, while the remaining two presented as gingival swellings and were purely restricted to soft tissue (cases 2 and 3). In this review, we summarized the progress over the last 10 years in the targeted pathways and molecular mechanisms of ISL that are involved in the regulation of the onset and progression of different types of cancers.We present the case of a man with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and prolonged profound neutropenia, who developed an invasive infection by Fusarium graminearum, acquired via non-cutaneous entry, with gastrointestinal symptoms, sigmoid perforation and liver abscesses due to portal dissemination. The etiologic agent was identified using the 18S-ITS1-5.8S-ITS2-28S rRNA sequence gene, from a liver biopsy. The infection was resolved with surgical drainage and antifungal treatment based on voriconazole. As far as we know, there are no previous reports in the literature of cases of human infection due to Fusarium graminearum.This study examines the current state of artificial intelligence (AI)-based technology applications and their impact on the healthcare industry. In addition to a thorough review of the literature, this study analyzed several real-world examples of AI applications in healthcare. The results indicate that major hospitals are, at present, using AI-enabled systems to augment medical staff in patient diagnosis and treatment activities for a wide range of diseases. In addition, AI systems are making an impact on improving the efficiency of nursing and managerial activities of hospitals. While AI is being embraced positively by healthcare providers, its applications provide both the utopian perspective (new opportunities) and the dystopian view (challenges to overcome). We discuss the details of those opportunities and challenges to provide a balanced view of the value of AI applications in healthcare. It is clear that rapid advances of AI and related technologies will help care providers create new value for their patients and improve the efficiency of their operational processes. Nevertheless, effective applications of AI will require effective planning and strategies to transform the entire care service and operations to reap the benefits of what technologies offer.
Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease that can affect the central and peripheral nervous system and it has variable neurological manifestation. However, brucellosis infection that presents with acute peripheral neuropathy mimicking Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is rarely reported in the literature.
We report a 56-year-old man who was initially diagnosed with GBS, and then he was confirmed to have acute
infection. We also did a systematic literature review to study the natural history and management of previously reported cases of brucellosis that presented with manifestations consistent with GBS.
We found 19 (including our patient) cases of brucellosis that presented with GBS-like manifestations. The age range was 9-62 years. Eight (42.1%) patients had a history of fever. Seven (36.8%) patients had no constitutional symptoms. Five (26.3%) patients had splenomegaly.

Propofol, a general anesthetic, is known to inhibit inflammation in I/R-induced ALI. We investigated whether propofol could suppress pyroptosis during rI/R-induced ALI by upregulating sirtuin 1 (SIRT1). We generated an in vivo model of rI/R-induced ALI by applying microvascular clamps to the renal pedicles of rats for 45 min. Pathological studies revealed that rI/R provoked substantial lung injury and inflammatory cell infiltration. The rI/R stimulus markedly activated pyroptotic proteins such as NLRP3, ASC, caspase 1, interleukin-1β and interleukin-18 in the lungs, but reduced the mRNA and protein levels of SIRT1. Propofol treatment greatly inhibited rI/R-induced lung injury and pyroptosis, whereas it elevated SIRT1 expression. Treatment with the selective SIRT1 inhibitor nicotinamide reversed the protective effects of propofol during rI/R-induced ALI. Analogous defensive properties of propofol were detected in vitro in rat alveolar macrophages incubated with serum from the rI/R rat model. These findings indicate that propofol attenuates rI/R-induced ALI by suppressing pyroptosis, possibly by upregulating SIRT1 in the lungs.This study investigated whether supplementation with nitrate-rich beetroot juice (BR) can improve high-intensity intermittent running performance in trained males in normoxia and different doses of normobaric hypoxia. Participants completed the first three experimental trials during days 3, 5, and 7 of BR or nitrate-depleted beetroot juice (PLA) supplementation and completed the remaining experimental visits on the alternative supplement following at least 7 days of washout. The fraction of inspired oxygen during visits 1-3 was either 0.209, 0.182, or 0.157, equivalent to an altitude of 0, 1,200, and 2,400 m, respectively, and this order was replicated on visits 4-6. Arterial oxygen saturation declined dose dependently as fraction of inspired oxygen was lowered (p .05). The findings from this study suggest that short-term BR supplementation does not improve high-intensity intermittent running performance in endurance-trained males in normoxia or at doses of normobaric hypoxia that correspond to altitudes at which athletes typically train while on altitude training camps.

A total of 9 unique studies (N = 1344; 40.5% females) were included. The authors found a moderate correlation test-retest reliability for PA SRQs in the assessment of vigorous PA (r = .69 [.38 to .85]; P = .001), moderate to vigorous PA (r = .63 [.25 to .84]; P = .003), moderate PA (r = .63 [.39 to .79]; P = .001), and good correlation total PA (r = .75 [.37 to .92]; P = .001). Physical activity provides a number of physical and psychological benefits. Multimodal proprioceptive exercise represents a useful balance-based exercise with the potential to reduce falls in older adults. Previous research has also indicated cognitive benefits following multimodal proprioceptive exercise in young and older adults. This study aimed to assess cognition and mood following 2 types of physical activity (multimodal proprioception vs yoga) compared with control (classroom-based) in healthy older adults.
Nineteen older adults (Mage = 65, sex = 9 males) participated in this randomized controlled crossover trial. Participants completed a 20-minute multimodal proprioceptive exercise class, 20-minute yoga session, and 20-minute classroom-based control. Numeric working memory and mood were assessed before and immediately following each of the interventions.
The multimodal proprioceptive intervention significantly reduced numeric working memory reaction time versus the yoga (P = .043) and control (P = .023) group. There were no differences found for accuracy or mood.
These results indicate that multimodal proprioceptive exercise is worthy of further investigation as an alternative mode of exercise alongside the more traditional aerobic and strength-based exercise for healthy older adults.

Despite the known risks of physical inactivity, only 50% of adults meet the recommended guidelines for physical activity (PA). Therefore, numerous interventions have been designed to increase PA across a lifespan. The purpose of this systematic review was to determine the effectiveness of interventions based on the transtheoretical model to improve PA in healthy adults.
Electronic databases (CINAHL, MEDLINE, Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection, PsycINFO, Sociological Collection, and SPORTDiscus) were systematically searched from January 2001 to May 2020.
A total of 11 randomized pretest-posttest studies were included in this review. In the past few decades, the studies of extrachromosomal DNA (ecDNA), which existed independently of chromosomes, were tepid. However, recent studies on ecDNA rekindled the enthusiasm of oncologists for further studying ecDNA. In this review, we summarized the recent advances of ecDNA in oncogenesis and oncotherapy. ecDNA consists of highly open chromatin, and its circular structure enables ultra-long-range chromatin contacts. ecDNA is not inherited in accordance with Mendel's laws. Furthermore, ecDNA is widely existed in cancer cells, but almost never found in normal cells. It has been found that ecDNA played important roles in tumorigenesis and tumor progression, including oncogene amplification, tumor heterogeneity, enhancer hijacking and genomic rearrangement. More importantly, ecDNA is closely related to cancer treatment resistance. The purpose of this study is to get to know the current status of rheumatologists in Ecuador, focusing on education, working conditions, productivity, distribution of time between work activities, and job satisfaction.
A digital survey was created using the Google Forms platform. It was distributed to all rheumatologist members of the Ecuadorian Society of Rheumatology. The data analysis was carried out using the statistical program SPSS v.23®.
A total of 64 surveys were received. The response rate was 86.48%. 62.5% were men and 37.5% women, with an average age of 40.76 ± 9.18. The main workplace was state/public hospital (56.3%). The average working hours per week were 40.35 ± 25.72. Most rheumatologists in Ecuador (62.5%) received their training abroad. 79.7% of rheumatologists earn less than $ 49,000 annually. The mean retirement age was 66.51 ± 6.7, and 54.7% have a retirement plan. The average satisfaction of Ecuadorian rheumatologists was 5.
In the past few decades, the studies of extrachromosomal DNA (ecDNA), which existed independently of chromosomes, were tepid. However, recent studies on ecDNA rekindled the enthusiasm of oncologists for further studying ecDNA. In this review, we summarized the recent advances of ecDNA in oncogenesis and oncotherapy. ecDNA consists of highly open chromatin, and its circular structure enables ultra-long-range chromatin contacts. ecDNA is not inherited in accordance with Mendel's laws. Furthermore, ecDNA is widely existed in cancer cells, but almost never found in normal cells. It has been found that ecDNA played important roles in tumorigenesis and tumor progression, including oncogene amplification, tumor heterogeneity, enhancer hijacking and genomic rearrangement. More importantly, ecDNA is closely related to cancer treatment resistance. In hence, further understanding of ecDNA would contribute to developing innovative targeting ecDNA therapies.Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T therapy started a new era of tumor treatment, especially for hematological malignancies. Robert John Porra (7.8.1931-16.5.2019) is probably best known for his substantial practical contributions to plant physiology and photosynthesis by addressing the problems of both the accurate spectroscopic estimation and the extractability of chlorophylls in many organisms. Physiological data and global productivity estimates, in particular of marine primary productivity, are often quoted on a chlorophyll basis. He also made his impact by work on all stages of tetrapyrrole biosynthesis he proved the C5 pathway to chlorophylls, detected an alternative route to protoporphyrin in anaerobes and the different origin of the oxygen atoms in anaerobes and aerobes. A brief review of his work is supplemented by personal memories of the authors.Diatoms are a diverse group of photosynthetic unicellular algae with a plastid of red-algal origin. As prolific primary producers in the ocean, diatoms fix as **** carbon as all rainforests combined. The molecular mechanisms that contribute to the high photosynthetic productivity and ecological success of diatoms are however not yet fully understood. Using the model diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum, here we show rhythmic transcript accumulation of plastid psaA, psbA, petB, and atpB genes as driven by a free running circadian clock. Treatment with the electron transport inhibitor 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea overrides the circadian signal by markedly downregulating transcription of psaA, petB, and atpB genes but not the psbA gene. Changes in light quantity produce little change in plastid gene transcription while the effect of light quality seems modest with only the psaA gene responding in a pattern that is dependent on the redox state of the plastoquinone pool. The significance of these plastid transcriptional responses and the identity of the underlying genetic control systems are discussed with relevance to diatom photosynthetic acclimation.Electro-acupuncture (EA) has been used for clinic analgesia for many years. However, its mechanisms are not fully understood. We recently reported that AXL, a tyrosine kinase receptor, contributes to the peripheral mechanism of neuropathic pain. We here aim to figure out the significance of EA on neuropathic pain mediated by AXL in dorsal root ganglion (DRG). Spinal nerve ligation (SNL) was used as a neuropathic pain model. EA was applied at ''Huantiao'' (GB-30) and ''Yanglingquan'' (GB-34) acupoints for 30 min daily from day 7 to day 10 after SNL. EA not only gradually attenuated SNL-induced mechanical allodynia, but also suppressed the expression of phosphorylated AXL (p-AXL) and AXL in injured DRGs of SNL rats examined by western blotting and immunofluorescence. Moreover, intrathecal injection of the subthreshold dose of AXL inhibitor TP0903, significantly prolonged the analgesic time of single EA treatment and enhanced the analgesic effect of repeated EA treatments, suggesting a synergic effect of EA and AXL inhibitor. These results indicate that AXL signaling underlies EA analgesia and combination of AXL inhibitor and EA might be a new strategy for clinic analgesia on neuropathic pain.The month of Ramadan is associated with many worships that might exhaust the weak body. The most important worships in Ramadan are fasting and prayer. Some prayers require the length of sitting and standing, in addition to prayer movements. Many Muslims are spending a long time in the mosque; sitting on the ground for reading or standing for prayer. The questionnaire is focused on those who spend a long time in the mosque. Seven attributes were considered for the understanding of what affects the worshiper's health, especially those who with chronic diseases. We found that there is a strong relationship between age and chronic diseases that may increase with the age. Also, the elderly cannot continue to pray for more than half an hour, and this is if balanced standing and sitting on a chair when is needed to prevent the disorder of the body and the emergence of symptoms of chronic disease.In a cohort of 82,898 participants from 60 countries, this study examined attitudes towards suicide among five religions (Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and other non-specific religions), while simultaneously considering two different dimensions of religiosity subjective religiosity and religious practices. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/Rapamycin.html At the national level, religiosity was an important negative predictor variable for suicide rates and an important positive predictor variable for negative attitudes towards suicide. Methods Data were collected from a sample of respondents that mirrored the general US population aged 18-59 years with regards to age, geographic region, ethnicity, income, and education level, based on most recent census data. Misuse/abuse/non-prescribed obtainment was collectively defined as use of a gabapentinoid for reasons other than a diagnosed medical condition, using with the intention of altering one's state of consciousness, or obtaining without a prescription. A multivariable logistic regression model was created to predict misuse/abuse/non-prescribed obtainment of gabapentinoids, incorporating relevant covariates. Main outcome measure Proportion of sample indicating lifetime misuse/abuse/non-prescribed obtainment of gabapentinoids. Results Among 1,843 respondents, 121 (6.6%) reported gabapentinoid misuse/abuse/non-prescribed obtainment. Specifically, 2.1% (n = 39) and 1.5% (n = 27) of respondents for gabapentin and pregabalin, respectively, met study criteria for abuse. Opioids were the most common medication co-administered with gabapentinoids (among 50-70% of respondents) for misuse/abuse. Previous treatment for addiction (OR 2.61, 95% CI 1.32-5.14, p = 0.005) and the total attitudinal risk score (OR 1.14, 95% CI 1.09-1.19, p less then 0.001) were associated with gabapentinoid misuse/abuse/non-prescribed obtainment. Conclusion Among those surveyed, 6.6% reported previous gabapentinoid misuse/abuse/non-prescribed obtainment, providing one of the first estimates within a nationally distributed, US general population sample.

Callosal angle (CA) and Evans index (EI) had been considered as imaging biomarkers to diagnosis normal-pressure hydrocephalus as traditional MR measurement methods.
The current study was aimed to evaluate the differential diagnostic value of CA and EI in the mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD).
Five-hundred and two subjects were selected from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database, which included 168 normal controls (NC), 233 MCI and 101 AD patients. The structural MR images were interactively applied with multiplanar reconstruction to measure the CA and EI.
CA presented no significant difference among NC, MCI and AD groups (H value = 3.848, P value = 0.146), and EI was demonstrated the higher in MCI and AD groups than that in NC groups (P = 0.000 and 0.001, respectively). MCI group had significant larger EI (0.29±0.04) than that (0.27±0.03) in NC group in 70-75 years old sub-groups. ROC showed that the area under the curve was 0.704±0.045 for NC-MCI in 70-75 years old groups. The correlation analysis indicated that EI was significantly negatively related with MMSE scores of MCI patients (r = -0.131, P = 0.046).
EI might serve as a screening imaging biomarker for MCI in 70-75 years old, and show limited differential value for the diagnosis of AD. CA could present no diagnostic value for MCI and AD in the current study.

COVID-19 has emerged recently and become of global concern. Computed tomography (CT) plays a vital role in the diagnosis.
To characterize the pulmonary CT changes and distributions of COVID-19 infection in regard to different age groups.
Chest CT scan of 104 symptomatic patients with COVID-19 infection, from 7 Iraqi isolation centers were retrospectively analyzed between March 10th and April 5th, 2020. Patients were sub-classified according to their ages to three groups (young adult20-39years, middle age40-59years and old age60- 90years).
The most common findings were ground-glass opacities (GGO) (92.3%, followed by consolidation (27.9%), bronchovascular thickening (15.4%), and crazy-paving (12.5%). Less commonly, there were tree-inbud (6.7%), pulmonary nodules (5.8%), bronchiectasis (3.8%), pleural effusion (1.9%), and cavitation (1%). There were no hallo sign, reversed hallo sign, nor mediastinal lymphadenopathy. Pulmonary changes were unilateral in 16.7% and bilateral in 83.3%, central in 14.6%, peripheral in 57.3%, and diffuse (central and peripheral) in 28.1%. Most cases showed multi-lobar changes (70.8%), while the lower lobe was more commonly involved (17.7%) than middle lobe/lingula (8.3%) and upper lobe (3.1%). In unilateral involvement, changes were more on the right (68.8%) than left (31.2%) side. Callosal angle (CA) and Evans index (EI) had been considered as imaging biomarkers to diagnosis normal-pressure hydrocephalus as traditional MR measurement methods. The current study was aimed to evaluate the differential diagnostic value of CA and EI in the mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Five-hundred and two subjects were selected from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database, which included 168 normal controls (NC), 233 MCI and 101 AD patients. The structural MR images were interactively applied with multiplanar reconstruction to measure the CA and EI. CA presented no significant difference among NC, MCI and AD groups (H value = 3.848, P value = 0.146), and EI was demonstrated the higher in MCI and AD groups than that in NC groups (P = 0.000 and 0.001, respectively). MCI group had significant larger EI (0.29±0.04) than that (0.27±0.03) in NC group in 70-75 years old sub-groups. ROC showed that the area under the curve was 0.704±0.045 for NC-MCI in 70-75 years old groups. The correlation analysis indicated that EI was significantly negatively related with MMSE scores of MCI patients (r = -0.131, P = 0.046). EI might serve as a screening imaging biomarker for MCI in 70-75 years old, and show limited differential value for the diagnosis of AD. To characterize the pulmonary CT changes and distributions of COVID-19 infection in regard to different age groups. Chest CT scan of 104 symptomatic patients with COVID-19 infection, from 7 Iraqi isolation centers were retrospectively analyzed between March 10th and April 5th, 2020. Patients were sub-classified according to their ages to three groups (young adult20-39years, middle age40-59years and old age60- 90years). The most common findings were ground-glass opacities (GGO) (92.3%, followed by consolidation (27.9%), bronchovascular thickening (15.4%), and crazy-paving (12.5%). Less commonly, there were tree-inbud (6.7%), pulmonary nodules (5.8%), bronchiectasis (3.8%), pleural effusion (1.9%), and cavitation (1%). There were no hallo sign, reversed hallo sign, nor mediastinal lymphadenopathy. Pulmonary changes were unilateral in 16.7% and bilateral in 83.3%, central in 14.6%, peripheral in 57.3%, and diffuse (central and peripheral) in 28.1%. Most cases showed multi-lobar changes (70.8%), while the lower lobe was more commonly involved (17.7%) than middle lobe/lingula (8.3%) and upper lobe (3.1%). Results displayed that the total higher alcohol concentration in α5ΔGDH1 strain decreased by 27.31% to 348.68 mg/L compared with that of α5. The total content of higher alcohols in α5ΔCAN1 and α5ΔGAT1 strains increased by 211.44% and 28.36% to 1493.96 and 615.73 mg/L, respectively, compared with that of α5. This study is the first to report that the CAN1 and GAT1 genes have great influence on the generation of higher alcohols. The results demonstrated that amino acid metabolism plays a substantial role in the metabolism of higher alcohols by S. cerevisiae. Interestingly, we also found that gene knockout downregulated the expression levels of the knocked out gene and other genes in the recombinant strain and thus affected the formation of higher alcohols by S. cerevisiae. Fourteen polymorphisms were analyzed in 93 Tunisian PF patients compared to 193 matched healthy controls rs5743703-rs5743709 and (GT)n repeat (TLR2); rs5743305, rs3775294, and rs3775291 (TLR3), rs4986790 and rs4986791 (TLR4); and rs3853839 (TLR7). Our results showed that the genetic factors varied depending on the epidemiological feature stratification. In fact, in the whole population, no association with the susceptibility to PF was found. The TLR2 GT repeat seems to be closely associated with PF risk in patients originated from the endemic localities (group 3); the GT18 allele and the heterozygous genotype GT18/GT19 seem to confer risk to endemiincreased susceptibility to PF in the Tunisian population.

Four orthopedic residents who had no prior experience of ankle arthrodesis were instructed on how to use the 3-dimensional navigation drill guide and where to insert the screws for ankle arthrodesis. Each resident inserted 6.5 cannulated screws on 8 sawbone ankle models using the device and the C-arm fluoroscopy. An experienced attending surgeon also inserted the same screws on 2 sawbone ankle models to find out if there is any difference between the experienced and inexperienced surgeons. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/direct-red-80.html All four residents and an attending surgeon did not experience any collision of screws for the three cannulated screws. The results indicate that the ecological risk of CTC in the soil is possible and can be controlled by slurry pit farm practices.Ecological theories can be applied to improve agricultural sustainability. In our study, a core hypothesis behind this claim is that "selfish behaviour" of rice cultivars results in "aversion" to a toxic substance in a multi-cropping system. We studied Changliangyou 772, a low-cadmium rice cultivar, cultivated with 11 different rice cultivars in intercropping and mixed systems. Rice cultivars with medium grain yield, ranging from 25 to 45 g plant-1, had distinctly higher yields in mixtures. Rice varieties with lower grain cadmium concentrations in monocultures had greater reductions in grain cadmium in the mixtures. In the intercropping systems, the yields of Changliangyou 772 were positively correlated with those of the neighbouring rice cultivars, while the grain cadmium showed a negative correlation with the grain cadmium of intercrops in the monocultures. The neighbouring cultivars with low grain cadmium concentrations in the intercropping showed higher cadmium concentrations in the monocultures. The intercropping and mixtures reduced the grain cadmium in two ways 1) they increased the soil pH, resulting in lower cadmium bioavailability; and 2) they enhanced the iron plaque (Ip). However, a high Ip or cadmium concentration that was too high in the Ip weakened the Ip to block cadmium uptake by the roots.Understanding the behavior of heavy metals in wastewater is critical for the development of metal removal and detection techniques. In this study, we characterize the dynamic and evolving size and partitioning behavior of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and arsenite (As(III)) throughout the wastewater treatment train (WWTT). Metal concentrations were determined in three size fractions (>0.45 μm, 0.45 μm - 5 kDa, and less then 5 kDa), and the partitioning/complexation of the metals was quantified for the less then 0.45 μm fraction. Cd was found to be highly mobile, with the fraction of dissolved Cd gradually increasing throughout the WWTT. As(III) was also highly mobile, with its size distribution and partitioning remaining largely steady, except when FeCl3 was used as a flocculation agent, which led to the formation of arsenic/iron complexes. However, Pb was found primarily in complex forms or adsorbed onto inorganic particulates. The WWTT had little impact on the size and partitioning of Pb, except that the formation of the Pb/iron complex occurred after flocculation with FeCl3. An increase of water hardness slightly increased the metals in the dissolved fraction. In this study, we analyzed the binding characteristics of REEs within coal ash via sequential extraction and examined REE recovery during a coal ash recycling process. As the temperature increased to 650 °C, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (except phenols) increased to 20.55 % and 19.03 %, respectively. Meanwhile, the total content of CO2, CO, CH4 and H2 in the non-condensable gases increased significantly. Addition of ZSM-5 and kaolin promoted the recombination reaction of pyrolysis products, increased the relative percentage of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (except phenols) and C11-C20 compounds in the oil, and reduced non-condensable gases. The oxygen bomb-ion chromatography was used to evaluate the Br content of pyrolysis residues. Higher pyrolysis temperature enhanced transfer of Br to pyrolysis gas. K2CO3, Na2CO3 and NaOH reacted with hydrogen bromide to generate KBr and NaBr, which significantly improved the Br fixation efficiency of pyrolysis residues (i.e. from 29.11%-99.80%, 96.39 % and 86.69 %, respectively) and reduced Br content in pyrolysis gas.In this study, Pretilachlor polyurea microencapsulate suspension (PMS) with effective controlled release function was carefully prepared. Under the optimal conditions, wall material PM-200 dosage 4%, emulsifier T-60 dosage 4% with S-20 as solvent, the prepared PMS was demonstrated to have encapsulation efficiency approaching to 95.27 ± 0.57 % and high suspension rates of 97.33 ± 0.49 %. Afterwards, PMS was proved to possess average release rate reached to 85.56 %, 55.46 % and 15.85 % respectively in acidic, basic and natural medium. Subsequently, the herbicidal activity of PMS on barnyard grass and the growth safety of rice were evaluated. PMS showed enhanced herbicidal activity against barnyard grass and had lower toxicity to rice growth compared with technical pretilachlor at dose 270-540 g (a.i.)/hm2. In addition, the use safety of PMS was validated to be comparable to that of commercially available pretilachlor emulsifiable concentrate containing additive safener at dose 270-540 g (a.i.)/hm2. The results indicate that the ecological risk of CTC in the soil is possible and can be controlled by slurry pit farm practices.Ecological theories can be applied to improve agricultural sustainability. In our study, a core hypothesis behind this claim is that "selfish behaviour" of rice cultivars results in "aversion" to a toxic substance in a multi-cropping system. We studied Changliangyou 772, a low-cadmium rice cultivar, cultivated with 11 different rice cultivars in intercropping and mixed systems. Rice cultivars with medium grain yield, ranging from 25 to 45 g plant-1, had distinctly higher yields in mixtures. Rice varieties with lower grain cadmium concentrations in monocultures had greater reductions in grain cadmium in the mixtures. In the intercropping systems, the yields of Changliangyou 772 were positively correlated with those of the neighbouring rice cultivars, while the grain cadmium showed a negative correlation with the grain cadmium of intercrops in the monocultures. The neighbouring cultivars with low grain cadmium concentrations in the intercropping showed higher cadmium concentrations in the monocultures. The intercropping and mixtures reduced the grain cadmium in two ways 1) they increased the soil pH, resulting in lower cadmium bioavailability; and 2) they enhanced the iron plaque (Ip). However, a high Ip or cadmium concentration that was too high in the Ip weakened the Ip to block cadmium uptake by the roots.Understanding the behavior of heavy metals in wastewater is critical for the development of metal removal and detection techniques. In this study, we characterize the dynamic and evolving size and partitioning behavior of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and arsenite (As(III)) throughout the wastewater treatment train (WWTT). Metal concentrations were determined in three size fractions (>0.45 μm, 0.45 μm - 5 kDa, and less then 5 kDa), and the partitioning/complexation of the metals was quantified for the less then 0.45 μm fraction. Cd was found to be highly mobile, with the fraction of dissolved Cd gradually increasing throughout the WWTT. As(III) was also highly mobile, with its size distribution and partitioning remaining largely steady, except when FeCl3 was used as a flocculation agent, which led to the formation of arsenic/iron complexes. However, Pb was found primarily in complex forms or adsorbed onto inorganic particulates. The WWTT had little impact on the size and partitioning of Pb, except that the formation of the Pb/iron complex occurred after flocculation with FeCl3. An increase of water hardness slightly increased the metals in the dissolved fraction. In this review, we recapitulate the physiological and pathological meanings of the microbiota on osteoporosis onset by governing miRNA production. Furthermore, 17/74 sera of persons with high concentrations of anti-Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (α-Bbsl) antibodies reacted strongly with B. miyamotoi GlpQ in immunoblots. The B. miyamotoi GlpQ seroprevalence was 7/50 in α-Bbsl negative persons. In healthy blood donors from commercial suppliers and from the Austrian Red Cross, seroprevalences were 5/14 and 10/35, respectively. Strikingly, two B. miyamotoi PCR-positive cases from Austria had negative GlpQ serology, indicating poor sensitivity. Finally, when we analyzed sera of dogs, we found α-B. miyamotoi GlpQ antibody seroprevalence in tick-free dogs (n = 10) and in tick-exposed dogs (n = 19) with 2/10 and 8/19, respectively. Thus, our results indicate that GlpQ-based B. miyamotoi serology holds neither specificity nor sensitivity.Despite the development of targeted therapies and novel inhibitors, cancer remains an undefeated disease. We here focus on the cell cycle kinase CDK6 and on the MAPK pathway and on their interplay. We also provide an overview on clinical studies examining the effects of combinational treatments currently explored for several cancer types.Most people infected with the fungus Paracoccidioides spp. do not get sick, but approximately 5% develop paracoccidioidomycosis. Understanding how host immunity determinants influence disease development could lead to novel preventative or therapeutic strategies; hence, we used two mouse strains that are resistant (A/J) or susceptible (B10.A) to P. brasiliensis to study how dendritic cells (DCs) respond to the infection. RNA sequencing analysis showed that the susceptible strain DCs remodeled their transcriptomes **** more intensely than those from the resistant strain, agreeing with a previous model of more intense innate immunity response in the susceptible strain. Contrastingly, these cells also repress genes/processes involved in antigen processing and presentation, such as lysosomal activity and autophagy. After the interaction with P. brasiliensis, both DCs and macrophages from the susceptible mouse reduced the autophagy marker LC3-II recruitment to the fungal phagosome compared to the resistant strain cells, confirming this pathway's repression. These results suggest that impairment in antigen processing and presentation processes might be partially responsible for the inefficient activation of the adaptive immune response in this model.The prevalence of gastric Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection is ~50% of the world population. However, how Hp infection influences inflammatory bowel disease in humans is not fully defined. In this study, we examined whether co-infection with Hp influenced Helicobacter hepaticus (Hh)-induced intestinal pathology in Rag2-/- ****. Rag2-/- **** of both sexes were infected with Hh, of which a subgroup was followed by infection with Hp two weeks later. Co-infected males, but not females, had significantly higher total colitis index scores in the colon at both 10 and 21 weeks post-Hh infection (WPI) and developed more severe dysplasia at 21 WPI compared with mono-Hh males. There were no significant differences in colonization levels of gastric Hp and colonic Hh between sexes or time-points. In addition, mRNA levels of colonic Il-1β, Ifnγ, Tnfα, Il-17A, Il-17F, Il-18, and Il-23, which play important roles in the development and function of proinflammatory innate lymphoid cell groups 1 and 3, were significantly up-regulated in the dually infected males compared with mono-Hh males at 21 WPI. Here, we aimed at expanding the cyanobacterial lipidomic analytical pipeline by using an untargeted lipidomics approach. Thus, the lipid composition variation of the model cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 was investigated in response to both alternative cultivation setups and gene deletion. This approach allowed for detecting differences in total lipid content, alterations in fatty-acid unsaturation level, and adjustments of specific lipid species among the identified lipid classes. The employed method also revealed that the cultivation setup tested in this work induced a deeper alteration of the cyanobacterial cell lipidome than the deletion of a gene that results in a dramatic increase in the release of lipid-rich outer membrane vesicles. This study further highlights how growth conditions must be carefully selected when cyanobacteria are to be engineered and/or scaled-up for lipid or fatty acids production.

As a shift toward more plant-based diets may also lead to higher exposures to chemicals or pathogens present in these foods, an evaluation of food safety implications of such transitions is now imperative. We conclude that several synergies between public health, environmental, and food safety strategies can be identified to support dietary transitions.
The global food system is directly linked to international health and sustainability targets, such as the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals, Paris Agreement climate change targets, and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets. These targets are already threatened by current dietary patterns and will be further threatened by 2050 because of a growing population and transitions toward diets with more calories, animal-source foods, and ultra-processed foods. While dietary changes to healthier and predominantly plant-based diets will be integral to meeting environmental targets, economic, social, and cultural barriers make such dietary transitions difficult.
To discuss the role of healthy diets in sustainable food systems and to highlight potential difficulties and solutions of transitioning toward healthier dietary patterns. To do so, we synthesize global knowledge and conduct a series of case studies on 4 countries that differ in their social, economic, political, and dietary contexts Brazil, Vietnam, Kenya, and Sweden.
No single "silver bullet" policy solution exists to shift food choices toward sustainable healthy diets. Instead, simultaneous action by the public sector, private sector, and governments will be needed.

Three complementary approaches to defining healthy diets are compared World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines or recommendations developed between 1996 and 2019; 2017 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) risk factor study estimates of diet-related risk-outcome associations; and analyses associating indices of whole dietary patterns with health outcomes in population studies and clinical trials.
World Health Organization dietary recommendations are global reference points for preventing undernutrition and reducing NCD risks; they emphasize increasing intakes of fruits, vegetables (excepting starchy root vegetables), legumes, nuts, and whole grains; limiting energy intake from free sugars and total fats; consuming unsaturated rather than saturated or
fats; and limiting salt intake. Global Burden of Disease findings align well with WHO recommendations but include some additional risk factors such as high consumption of processed meat; this approach quantifies contributions of diet-related risks to the NCD burden. Evidence on whole dietary patterns supports WHO and GBD findings and raises concerns about potential adverse health effects of foods with high levels of industrial processing.

In this paper, we review the contribution of these 2 diets to health and nutrition and to environmental, sociocultural, and economic sustainability proposing pertinent indicators. Learning from a culturally established diet and a constructed one, tradeoff could be reached to ensure better health and sustainability outcomes. Strong factors for achieving this goal lie in building on the sociocultural appropriation of diets, having the proper tools and indicators, investing in cross-sector collaboration and policy coherence, and having the necessary political support to push the agenda of sustainability forward.
As a shift toward more plant-based diets may also lead to higher exposures to chemicals or pathogens present in these foods, an evaluation of food safety implications of such transitions is now imperative. We conclude that several synergies between public health, environmental, and food safety strategies can be identified to support dietary transitions. The global food system is directly linked to international health and sustainability targets, such as the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals, Paris Agreement climate change targets, and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets. These targets are already threatened by current dietary patterns and will be further threatened by 2050 because of a growing population and transitions toward diets with more calories, animal-source foods, and ultra-processed foods. While dietary changes to healthier and predominantly plant-based diets will be integral to meeting environmental targets, economic, social, and cultural barriers make such dietary transitions difficult. To discuss the role of healthy diets in sustainable food systems and to highlight potential difficulties and solutions of transitioning toward healthier dietary patterns. To do so, we synthesize global knowledge and conduct a series of case studies on 4 countries that differ in their social, economic, political, and dietary contexts Brazil, Vietnam, Kenya, and Sweden. Cellular senescence is an important tumor-suppressive mechanism that arrests the cell cycle of damaged cells after diverse stresses. This study aimed to elucidate the role of mitochondrial glutamine (Gln) metabolism in senescence cell-fate decision after DNA damage.
β-galactosidase staining was used to determine senescence induction. The mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) activity and p21 expression were examined by western blot. Cell proliferation and clonogenic growth were evaluated.
Inhibition of mitochondrial Gln metabolism suppressed DNA damage-induced senescence, whereas increased Gln anaplerosis resulted in a profound induction of senescence. Mechanistically, Gln anaplerosis mediated senescence induction by activating mTOR signaling upon DNA damage. Importantly, enhancing Gln anaplerosis could reduce the emergence of proliferative subpopulations of cancer cells after exposure to non-lethal doses of chemotherapeutic agents.

Acceptance of corneas from donors with a malignancy remains controversial, especially for donors with hematological malignancy. The aim of our study was to examine, for the first time in literature, any structural differences in the integrity of the corneal grafts from donors who have received and from those who have not received chemotherapy.
The immunohistochemical expression of CD44 was examined in 12 corneal grafts obtained from 8 donors. Three grafts were obtained from 2 donors who had received chemotherapy and the rest were obtained from 6 donors who had not received any kind of chemotherapy.
Epithelial cells expressed the CD44 molecule in all grafts of both groups. No CD44 expression was noticed on endothelial cells or in the stroma.
Tumorigenesis and the consequent chemotherapy did not affect the structure and integrity of the corneal tissue in the examined samples. We suggest that corneal grafts from cancer donors are safe and functionally equals to grafts obtained from non-cancer donors.

CLIC1 has not been previously studied in bladder cancer and thus, we aimed to assess its immunohistochemical expression in relation to different stages of bladder cancer development.
Immunohistochemistry for CLIC1 was applied in 50 cases of muscle invasive bladder cancer.

Maslinic acid, a natural plant-derived triterpenoid compound, exhibits pharmacological activities, including anti-cancer. In the present study, we investigated the cytotoxic effects of maslinic acid on human cervical cancer HeLa cells in vitro and further investigated the molecular mechanism of maslinic acid-induced DNA damage and repair.

Using an integrated approach that combined coarse-grained molecular simulations, protein stability analysis, and perturbation-based modeling of residue interaction networks, we examined how mutations in the regulatory regions of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein can differentially affect dynamics and allosteric signaling in distinct functional states. The results of this study revealed key functional regions and regulatory centers that govern collective dynamics, allosteric interactions, and control signal transmission in the SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins. We found that the experimentally confirmed regulatory hotspots that dictate dynamic switching between conformational states of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein correspond to the key hinge sites and global mediating centers of the allosteric interaction networks. The results of this study provide a novel insight into allosteric regulatory mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins showing that mutations at the key regulatory positions can differentially modulate distribution of states and determine topography of signal communication pathways operating through state-specific cascades of control switch points. In this study, the uptake, elimination, and bioaccumulation of phenanthrene (PHE) in Enchytraeus albidus (Oligochaeta) under different constant temperatures, and an FT regime were investigated in a natural soil. In general, the PHE concentrations in worm tissues reached steady state within 14 days at different temperatures. The uptake (ku) and elimination (ke) rate constants and the bioaccumulation increased with increasing temperature likely because of an increased diffusivity of PHE into the worms and an increased metabolic rate. Interestingly, the bioaccumulation factor of PHE in E. albidus showed a positive relationship with temperature because the slope of the ku-temperature relationship was larger than that of the ke-temperature relationship.

To better mimic natural photosynthesis, the M1-ESY-SR101 system was utilized as photochemical catalysis for alkylation of C-H bonds in aqueous solution, showing enhanced catalytic activity as compared with the M1-ESY system or ESY/SR101 alone.The main aim in the present report is to gain a deeper understanding of typical 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions by means of three chemical reactivity models in a unified perspective conceptual density functional theory, distortion/interaction, and reaction force analysis. The focus is to explore the information provided by each reactivity model and how they complement or reinforce each other. Our results showed that the Bell-Evans-Polanyi (BEP) relationship is fulfilled, which is consistent with the Hammond-Leffler postulate. The electronic chemical potential based analysis classifies the reactions as HOMO-, HOMO/LUMO-, and LUMO-controlled reactions as the activation energy increases. It seems likely that HOMO-controlled reaction shifts into LUMO-controlled one as the transition state (TS) position does from early into late. Therefore, the transition from HOMO- (and early TS) into LUMO-controlled (and late TS) is paid by shifting the overall energy change into an endothermic direction, thus supporting the fulfillmement that BEP is fulfilled for similar reactions proceeding by a quite alike degree of synchronicity.Herein, we report a highly rare robust 4d-5f bimetal-organic framework that shows high porosity and thermal/chemical stability and thus is capable of removing trace SO2 from a SO2/CO2/N2 mixture even under humid conditions. This work not only shows a novel adsorbent for SO2 removal but also extends the function of actinium-based coordination compounds.The aroma of aged garlic extract (AGE) has been recently characterized as a complexity of seasoning-like, metallic, fatty, and acidic notes; most of the important aroma compounds were identified in a previous study. Besides the 25 previously identified aromas of AGE, several of the odor compounds that contribute to the acidic notes were isolated and identified using various analytical techniques, including gas chromatography coupled with an olfactometry monitoring system (GC-O), accurate and high-performance preparative GC system, GC-MS analysis, and sensory evaluation. The identified aromas include 2,4-dimethyl-1,3-dithiolane, 2,5-dimethyl-1,4-dithiane, and 2,6-dimethyl-1,4-dithiane. Interestingly, AGE contains all stereoscopic isomers of each of these components. An aroma recombinant composed of the newly identified acidic odors with other key odorants showed good agreement with the aroma of AGE.Although the toxicokinetics of organic pollutants in soil invertebrates under optimal and constant temperature has been widely reported, their uptake, elimination, and bioaccumulation under suboptimal temperatures, and especially daily fluctuating temperature (FT) regimes have received only little research attention. In this study, the uptake, elimination, and bioaccumulation of phenanthrene (PHE) in Enchytraeus albidus (Oligochaeta) under different constant temperatures, and an FT regime were investigated in a natural soil. In general, the PHE concentrations in worm tissues reached steady state within 14 days at different temperatures. The uptake (ku) and elimination (ke) rate constants and the bioaccumulation increased with increasing temperature likely because of an increased diffusivity of PHE into the worms and an increased metabolic rate.
