  • Political affiliation was the most frequent predictor of sexism. The results highlight the need for an intersectional approach to understanding the phenomenon of sexism.Previous work has shown that memory performance in older adults is affected by activation of a stereotype of age-related memory decline. In the present experiment, we examined whether stereotype threat would affect metamemory in older adults; that is, whether under stereotype threat they make poorer judgments about what they could remember. A picture of "observing eyes" was attached to paper dispensers and cleanser spray bottles at two different gyms in Norway. A reversal design, also called an ABA design, with and without the nudge's presence, was used to investigate the impact on gym members' hygienic behavior. A follow-up study was conducted in one of the centers to investigate whether the nudge stimuli would function over time. The study included 254 individual choice situations during nine observation sessions conducted over 9 weeks. The results from both centers provide evidence of a strong effect of the nudge. However, the effect decreased during the follow-up study. These findings support previous research indicating that human behavior is influenced by the presence of implicit observation cues - in this case - observing eyes. Novelty seeking, where individuals explore novel and unfamiliarly stimuli and environments, may enhance the creativity of individuals to solve problems in a way that allows them to adjust their emotional responses to stressful situations. This study employs a longitudinal design to investigate changes in novelty seeking and mental health outcomes (namely, stress, anxiety, and depression) before, during, and after COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, among a group of students (final N = 173; Mage = 19.81; SDage = 0.98; 135 females and 38 males) from a university in southeast China. Participants were surveyed at three points November, 2019 (prior to the COVID-19 pandemic); between February and March, 2020 (during the peak of the pandemic and intense lockdowntly detrimental to mental health. The findings indicate the important role of novelty seeking in responding to crises. It may be possible for future public health measures to incorporate the promotion of novelty seeking to help individuals' respond to stressful situations and maintain good mental health in the face of crises.Children are vulnerable to adverse effects of food advertising. Food commercials are known to increase hedonic, taste-oriented, and unhealthy food decisions. The current study examined how promoting resilience to food commercials impacted susceptibility to unhealthy food decision-making in children. To promote resilience to food commercials, we utilized the food advertising literacy intervention intended to enhance cognitive skepticism and critical thinking, and decrease positive attitudes toward commercials. Thirty-six children aged 8-12 years were randomly assigned to the food advertising literacy intervention or the control condition. Eighteen children received four brief intervention sessions via video over 1 week period. In each session, children watched six food commercials with interspersed embedded intervention narratives. While watching food commercials and narratives, children were encouraged to speak their thoughts out loud spontaneously ("think-aloud"), which provided children's attitudes toward commercials.

The understanding and exploitation of the nonspecific alloreactivity of allo-HCT and the graft-versus-tumor effect is contrasted by the genetically engineered precision of CAR T therapy. Historically, those with relapsed and refractory hematologic malignancies have often been considered for allo-HCT, although outcomes vary dramatically and are associated with potential acute and chronic toxicities. Such patients, mainly with B-lymphoid malignancies, may now be offered CAR T therapy. Yet, a lack of prospective data to guide decisions thereafter requires individualized approaches on whether to proceed to allo-HCT or observe. The continued innovations to make CAR T therapy more effective and accessible will continue to alter such approaches, but similar innovations in allo-HCT will likely result in similarly improved clinical outcomes. In this review, we describe the history of the two platforms, dissect the clinical indications emphasizing their intertwining and competitive roles described in trials and practice guidelines, and highlight innovations in which they complement or inform one another.

Pathological and genetic markers maypredict more aggressive behavior in MPNSTs but have uncommonly been investigated, and feware used in daily practice. This study reviews the prognostic value of immunohistochemical markers and genetic alterations in MPNST.

    A systematic search was performed in PubMed and Embase databases according to the PRISMA guidelines. Search terms related to 'MPNST' and 'prognostic' were used. Studies investigating the association of immunohistochemical markers or genetic alterations with prognosis were included. Qualitative synthesis was performed on all studies. A distinction was made between univariable and multivariable associations.

    Forty-six studies were included after full-text screening. Sixty-seven different immunohistochemical markers were investigated. Absence of S100 and H3K27me3 and high Ki67 and p53 staining was most commonly independently associated with worse ay distinguish MPNSTs with worse outcomes. Genetic alterations and staining of other cell cycle regulatory and Ras pathway proteins may also help stratifying patients with worse outcomes.   • The safety and tolerability profile of oral semaglutide across the PIONEER clinical trial program was consistent with the GLP-1RA class. The most common adverse events were gastrointestinal (GI) (eg, nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting), which were typically mild to moderate and transient. In clinical practice, oral semaglutide expands the treatment options available to patients with T2D and can be considered in patient populations suitable for injectable GLP-1RAs.The first tablet formulation of a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist(GLP-1RA), oral semaglutide, was approved in September 2019 for the treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D). This article reviews data from the PIONEER phase 3a clinical trial program, which assessed the efficacy and safety of oral semaglutide in more than 9500 patients at different stages on the disease trajectory (mean diabetes duration,3.5-15 years) and on a range of background treatment regimens(monotherapy, added to 1 or 2 oral glucose-lowering agents, or added to insulin). The studies compared oral semaglutide (doses of 3 mg, 7 mg, or14 mg) with placebo, and selected commonly used glucose-lowering agents (empagliflozin 25 mg, sitagliptin 100 mg, or liraglutide 1.8mg).     The aim of the present study was to describe our totally intracorporeal robotic ileal ureter replacement technique, reporting perioperative and mid-term results and compare it with previous similar experiences, specifically focusing on technical considerations.

    Three patients were submitted to robotic ileal ureter substitution for long ureteral defects in our institution during 2019. The procedures were carried out fully intracorporeally. Two patients received a complete replacement of the urinary tract using an ileal segment, while in one patient the lower ureteral stump was maintained, and an ileal-ureter anastomosis was performed distally. Patients' baseline characteristics, as well as perioperative and mid-term results were collected. A detailed description of the technique is reported and compared with prior similar experiences.

    Median operative time was 270 (range 240-300) min. No Clavien-Dindo complication >2 was collected. All patients experienced a fast return to oral intake and canalization. Antegrade pyelography, performed a 1-month follow-up, revealed full passage of the medium contrast in those patients submitted to complete ileal ureter replacement while, in the third one, stenosis at the level of ileal-ureter anastomoses was found.

    Robotic ileal ureter replacement can be performed completely intracorporeal with optimal results and limited complication rate, in selected cases. According to our considerations, specific surgical steps are needed to reduce the risks related to this procedure, including avoiding partial ileal substitution.

Two patients received a complete replacement of the urinary tract using an ileal segment, while in one patient the lower ureteral stump was maintained, and an ileal-ureter anastomosis was performed distally. Patients' baseline characteristics, as well as perioperative and mid-term results were collected. A detailed description of the technique is reported and compared with prior similar experiences. Median operative time was 270 (range 240-300) min. No Clavien-Dindo complication >2 was collected. All patients experienced a fast return to oral intake and canalization. Antegrade pyelography, performed a 1-month follow-up, revealed full passage of the medium contrast in those patients submitted to complete ileal ureter replacement while, in the third one, stenosis at the level of ileal-ureter anastomoses was found. Brain connectivity metrics were then correlated with State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) measures within each group. Adolescents with an anxiety disorder showed significant hyperconnectivity between salience-motor DN FT and cerebral cortical salience-motor regions compared to controls. Salience-motor FT connectivity with cerebral cortical sensorimotor regions was significantly correlated with STAI-trait scores in HC (R2 = 0.41). It is undeniable that scientists and radiologists will play a predominant role in directing this burgeoning field. This article introduces several recent developments in imaging modalities and nanoparticles-based imaging agents, and discusses how systematic imaging can be achieved. In the near future, systematic imaging which combines multiple imaging modalities with multimodal imaging agents will pave a new avenue for comprehensive characterization of diseases, successful achievement of image-guided therapy, precise evaluation of therapeutic effects, and rapid development of novel pharmaceuticals, with the final goal of improving human health-related outcomes.

    We conducted both a longitudinal epidemiological survey and action research in parallel in a large housing complex district in Tokyo, Japan, using the community-based participatory research framework. Through collaboration with community professionals, we supported an isolated elderly man who refused medical intervention for three years until his death. After his passing, we re-examined all of his records, conducted in-depth interviews with the community professionals, and held a conference to review the process of managing this individual.

    Concerning support for the decision-making, three conclusions were obtained from the data 1) a decision is not always stated explicitly; 2) a decision should be supported by the team, because mind sometimes changes; and 3) supporting decision-making is a process in itself.     Alcohol consumption is high in the colder regions of Russia, and it is related to poor sleep quality, mental and physical health problems. Little known on the actual situation, and no appropriate amount of drinking has been shown as a health guidance. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between alcohol consumption (in pure alcohol) and sleep among older people living in the Russian Siberian region, and the factors related to alcohol consumption.

    A self-reported questionnaire survey was administered to 422 elderly over the age of 60 living in Novosibirsk, the central city of Siberia. Question items were basic attributes, health status, drinking habits, Short Form-8 Health Survey, Geriatric Depression Scale, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. For drinking elderly, daily amount of alcohol converted in pure alcohol was calculated, and logistic regression analysis among the two groups was compared based on the median value (32 g).

    The valid responses from the survey was 416 (98.9%). Of these, 293 with drinking habits were subjected to logistic regression analysis using pure alcohol (≥32 g/day) as the dependent variable. Significant relationships were found with gender (OR=0.586; 95%CI 0.345-0.995), years of education (OR=1.538; 95%CI 1.239-1.910), insomnia (OR=2.442; 95%CI 1.185-5.032), alcohol intake, due to better sleep (OR=4.120; 95%CI 1.044-16.258), effects of drinking, arousal during the night (OR=2.586; 95%CI 1.317-5.077), effects of drinking, from family (OR=26.938; 95%CI 3.368-215.431).

As part of the driver's license clinic at Kurashiki Heisei Hospital, the present study investigated the status of voluntary license surrender in Okayama Prefecture of Japan. From March 2017 to December 2019, the number of voluntary surrenders increased from 5,434 to 10,284 cases, or at a rate of 0.42% to 0.80%, among license holders, with the old-old accounting for 68%-77% of voluntary surrenders. The major reasons for surrender were a decline in physical ability (25%-38%), a decline in driving needs (28%-60%), and family's suggestion (14%-17%). The increase in voluntary license surrender over these 3 years was common across all municipalities within Okayama Prefecture, but the surrender rate was closely correlated with the aged-society rate for both old populations of ages 65-74 and more than 75 (r = -0.5508, **p = 0.002 and r = -0.3086, p = 0.110, respectively). The driver's license clinic at Kurashiki Heisei Hospital received 110 visits during the 3-year period, in which MCI (mild cognitive impairment) accounted for 67% of voluntary surrenders (21.8%).     The purpose of this study was to clarify the effect of sonic wave vibration (SWV) on mood, the autonomic-nervous system, brain function and cognitive function in elderly people.

    We randomly assigned 24 late-stage elderly people (M 88.0±5.0 yrs) into a SWV group and a control group. The SWV group conducted 10 minutes of SWV per day, 5 days a week for 8 consecutive weeks. For evaluation purposes, we analyzed the moods with TDMS, heart rate variability (HRV), resting energy expenditure (REE), and brain activation during the Stroop test using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS).

    The stability level and pleasure level of mood increased significantly immediately after SWV. Simultaneously, the levels of the parasympathetic nervous system index of HRV significantly increased while the levels of the sympathetic nervous system index significantly decreased. REE also significantly increased. These results suggest that SWV has a relaxation effect as well as increasing the energy expenditure for elderly people. After intervention, Stroop B's execution time significantly decreased suggesting an improvement in the processing speed.

A self-reported questionnaire survey was administered to 422 elderly over the age of 60 living in Novosibirsk, the central city of Siberia. Question items were basic attributes, health status, drinking habits, Short Form-8 Health Survey, Geriatric Depression Scale, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. For drinking elderly, daily amount of alcohol converted in pure alcohol was calculated, and logistic regression analysis among the two groups was compared based on the median value (32 g). The valid responses from the survey was 416 (98.9%). Of these, 293 with drinking habits were subjected to logistic regression analysis using pure alcohol (≥32 g/day) as the dependent variable. Significant relationships were found with gender (OR=0.586; 95%CI 0.345-0.995), years of education (OR=1.538; 95%CI 1.239-1.910), insomnia (OR=2.442; 95%CI 1.185-5.032), alcohol intake, due to better sleep (OR=4.120; 95%CI 1.044-16.258), effects of drinking, arousal during the night (OR=2.586; 95%CI 1.317-5.077), effects of drinking, from family (OR=26.938; 95%CI 3.368-215.431). Among the elderly people in colder regions of Russia, high alcohol consumption reduces sleep quality, suggesting the need for appropriate standards for pure alcohol and health education. As part of the driver's license clinic at Kurashiki Heisei Hospital, the present study investigated the status of voluntary license surrender in Okayama Prefecture of Japan. From March 2017 to December 2019, the number of voluntary surrenders increased from 5,434 to 10,284 cases, or at a rate of 0.42% to 0.80%, among license holders, with the old-old accounting for 68%-77% of voluntary surrenders. The major reasons for surrender were a decline in physical ability (25%-38%), a decline in driving needs (28%-60%), and family's suggestion (14%-17%). The increase in voluntary license surrender over these 3 years was common across all municipalities within Okayama Prefecture, but the surrender rate was closely correlated with the aged-society rate for both old populations of ages 65-74 and more than 75 (r = -0.5508, **p = 0.002 and r = -0.3086, p = 0.110, respectively). The driver's license clinic at Kurashiki Heisei Hospital received 110 visits during the 3-year period, in which MCI (mild cognitive impairment) accounted for 67% of voluntary surrenders (21.8%). The present study suggests that the increase in the rate of voluntary license surrender during the 3-year period was closely related to the aged-society rate in Okayama Prefecture, and that a driver's license clinic provides a detailed dementia status among license holders who have voluntarily surrendered their license. The purpose of this study was to clarify the effect of sonic wave vibration (SWV) on mood, the autonomic-nervous system, brain function and cognitive function in elderly people. We randomly assigned 24 late-stage elderly people (M 88.0±5.0 yrs) into a SWV group and a control group. The SWV group conducted 10 minutes of SWV per day, 5 days a week for 8 consecutive weeks. For evaluation purposes, we analyzed the moods with TDMS, heart rate variability (HRV), resting energy expenditure (REE), and brain activation during the Stroop test using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). The stability level and pleasure level of mood increased significantly immediately after SWV. Simultaneously, the levels of the parasympathetic nervous system index of HRV significantly increased while the levels of the sympathetic nervous system index significantly decreased. REE also significantly increased. These results suggest that SWV has a relaxation effect as well as increasing the energy expenditure for elderly people. After intervention, Stroop B's execution time significantly decreased suggesting an improvement in the processing speed.

  • The optimal surgical indications for humeral shaft fractures in the working population remain uncertain. This study investigates the impact of surgical fixation on return to duty, union, and complications in workers' compensation patients with humeral shaft fractures.

    All workers' compensation patients with humeral shaft fractures managed at a single institution between 2007 and 2017 were identified. Manual chart and radiographic review was performed to identify etiology of injury, type of work, time until return to duty, length of physical therapy, complications, and time to fracture union.

    There were 39 humeral shaft fractures in workers' compensation patients managed at our institution (25 surgical; 64.1%). There was no difference in the return to light (106.1 versus 60.4 days;

    The primary goals of total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) are to relieve pain, improve range of motion, and restore function. Physical therapy is commonly used to help achieve these goals. Recent evidence has pointed to the success and safety of a purely physician-guided, home-based or internet-based, program versus the traditional therapist guided program. The purpose of this study was to evaluate outcomes of TSA in patients using a web-based, home therapy program.

    A retrospective review was performed of TSA patients who were given the option of using a web-based, home therapy program. Functional outcomes were collected preoperatively, 6-month, and 12-month post-operative examinations. Physical examination parameters were recorded at preoperative, 3-month, 6-month, and 12-month time-points.

    Forty-seven patients used the web-based, home therapy program and had complete follow-up data at all time intervals. All mean range of motion parameters and functional scores improved significantly from preoperatively to postoperatively. There was one reported complication in a patient who sustained a subscapularis rupture and underwent subsequent open repair at 10 months postoperatively.

    This study demonstrates successful improvements in range of motion and functional outcomes in a subset of patients who utilized an online therapy program after TSA. Future study will be necessary to directly compare results in patients enrolled in formal, outpatient therapy programs and to determine barriers to utilization of web-based therapy programs.

Ginsenoside Rb1 inhibited complex I- but not complex II- or IV-dependent O2 consumption and enzyme activity. The inhibitory effects of ginsenoside Rb1 on mitochondrial I-dependent respiration and reperfusion-induced ROS production were rescued by bypassing complex I using yeast NADH dehydrogenase. The development of the experimental vaccines requires a plethora of molecular techniques as well as strict compliance with safety procedures. The research and clinical data integrity, cross-validation of the results, and appropriated studies from the perspective of efficacy and potently side effects have recently become a hotly discussed topic. In this review, we present an update on latest advances and progress in an ongoing race to develop 52 different vaccines against SARS-CoV-2. Our analysis is focused on registered clinical trials (current as of November 04, 2020) that fulfill the international safety and efficacy criteria in the vaccine development. The requirements as well as benefits and risks of diverse types of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines are discussed including those containing whole-virus and live-attenuated vaccines, subunit vaccines, mRNA vaccines, DNA vaccines, live vector vaccines, and also plant-based vaccine formulation containing coronavirus-like particle (VLP). We sought to determine whether pre-transplantation systemic intravenous administration of human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (hiPSC-MSCs) could improve the survival of hiPSC-MSCs or hiPSC-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs) following direct intramyocardial transplantation in a mouse model of MI. Methods Mice were randomized to undergo intravenous administration of saline or 5×105 hiPSC-MSCs one week prior to MI, induced by ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery. Mice were further assigned to undergo direct intramyocardial transplantation of hiPSC-MSCs (1×106) or hiPSC-CMs (1×106) 10 minutes following MI. Echocardiographic and invasive hemodynamic assessment were performed to determine cardiac function. In-vivo fluorescent imaging analysis, immunofluorescence staining and polymerase chain reaction were performed to detect cell engraftment.

    Postprandial hyperglycemia increases systemic inflammation and is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. A ketone monoester (KME) drink containing β-hydroxybutyrate (β-OHB) rapidly lowers plasma glucose, which may be a strategy protecting against postprandial hyperglycemia.

    We hypothesized that KME would attenuate 2-hour postprandial glucose, lower systemic inflammation, and improve vascular function in adults with obesity.

    In a randomized crossover design, 14 participants with obesity (age = 56 ± 12 years; body mass index = 32.8 ± 7.7 kg/m2) consumed KME (12 g β-OHB) or placebo 15 minutes prior to each meal for 14 days with all meals provided and matched between conditions. The aim of the study was to identify the characteristics, content and psychometric properties of measures for life participation used in research in PD.

    We searched MEDLINE, Embase, PsychInfo, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials from inception to May 2020 for all studies that reported life participation in patients on PD. The characteristics, dimensions of life participation and psychometric properties of these measures were extracted and analyzed.

    Of the 301 studies included, 17 (6%) were randomized studies and 284 (94%) were nonrandomized studies. Forty-two different measures were used to assess life participation. We estimated a social isolation index to incorporate variables, such as social interactions, social engagement, and social support, with perceived social isolation, for a comprehensive measurement. The association of social isolation with cognitive functioning was assessed using a panel data fixed-effects model, controlling for age, socioeconomic status, health-related variables, and time-invariant heterogeneity. Moreover, we conducted analyses using the System Generalised Method of Moments (GMM) to address the dynamic relationship of cognitive functioning and potential endogeneity.

  • Our findings have important implications for understanding the long-term consequences of large population shocks.Environmental changes caused by urbanization and noise pollution can have profound effects on acoustic communication. Many organisms use higher sound frequencies in urban environments with low-frequency noise, but the developmental and evolutionary mechanisms underlying these shifts are generally unknown. We used a common garden experiment to ask whether changes in minimum song frequency observed 30 years after a songbird colonized an urban environment are a consequence of behavioural flexibility. We captured male juvenile dark-eyed juncos, Junco hyemalis thurberi, from two populations (urban and mountain) soon after they reached independence (aged 25-40 days), raised them in identical indoor aviaries and studied their songs at an age of 3 years. We found that the large population difference in minimum frequency observed in the field persisted undiminished in the common garden despite the absence of noise. We also found some song sharing between the common garden and natal field populations, indicating that early song memorization before capture could contribute to the persistent song differences in adulthood. These results are the first to show that frequency shifts in urban birdsong are maintained in the absence of noise by genetic evolution and/or early life experiences.Interactions between RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) and RNAs are critical to cell biology. RNA interactome capture (RIC) uses in vivo UV crosslinking, oligo(dT) capture, and proteomics to identify RNA-binding proteomes. Recent advances have empowered RIC to quantify RBP responses to biological cues such as metabolic imbalance or virus infection. Enhanced RIC exploits the stronger binding of locked nucleic acid (LNA)-containing oligo(dT) probes to poly(A) tails to maximize RNA capture selectivity and efficiency, profoundly improving signal-to-noise ratios. The subsequent analytical use of SILAC and TMT proteomic approaches, together with high-sensitivity sample preparation and tailored statistical data analysis, substantially improves RIC's quantitative accuracy and reproducibility. This optimized approach is an extension of the original RIC protocol. Our results suggest that mitigation strategies aimed at reducing the mass concentrations of particulate matter alone may not reduce the oxidative potential concentration. Here we resolve this apparent paradox by showing that day-to-day human mobility does indeed contain meaningful scales, corresponding to spatial 'containers' that restrict mobility behaviour. The scale-free results arise from aggregating displacements across containers. We present a simple model-which given a person's trajectory-infers their neighbourhood, city and so on, as well as the sizes of these geographical containers. We find that the containers-characterizing the trajectories of more than 700,000 individuals-do indeed have typical sizes.   • Kallikrein (PKa), generated by activation of its precursor prekallikrein (PK), plays a role in the contact activation phase of coagulation and functions in the kallikrein-kinin system to generate bradykinin. The general dogma has been that the contribution of PKa to the coagulation cascade is dependent on its action on FXII. Recently this dogma has been challenged by studies in human plasma showing thrombin generation due to PKa activity on FIX and also by murine studies showing formation of FIXa-antithrombin complexes in FXI deficient ****. In this study, we demonstrate high-affinity binding interactions between PK(a) and FIX(a) using surface plasmon resonance and show that these interactions are likely to occur under physiological conditions. Furthermore, we directly demonstrate dose- and time-dependent cleavage of FIX by PKa in a purified system by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis and chromogenic assays. By using normal pooled plasma and a range of coagulation factor-deficient plasmas, we show that this action of PKa on FIX not only results in thrombin generation, but also promotes fibrin formation in the absence of FXII or FXI. Comparison of the kinetics of either FXIa- or PKa-induced activation of FIX suggest that PKa could be a significant physiological activator of FIX. Our data indicate that the coagulation cascade needs to be redefined to indicate that PKa can directly activate FIX. In this study, we discover Alzheimer's disease (AD)-specific single-nucleotide variants (SNVs) and abnormal exon splicing of phospholipase c gamma-1 (PLCγ1) gene, using genome-wide association study (GWAS) and a deep learning-based exon splicing prediction tool. GWAS revealed that the identified single-nucleotide variations were mainly distributed in the H3K27ac-enriched region of PLCγ1 gene body during brain development in an AD mouse model. A deep learning analysis, trained with human genome sequences, predicted 14 splicing sites in human PLCγ1 gene, and one of these completely matched with an SNV in exon 27 of PLCγ1 gene in an AD mouse model. In particular, the SNV in exon 27 of PLCγ1 gene is associated with abnormal splicing during messenger RNA maturation. Taken together, our findings suggest that this approach, which combines in silico and deep learning-based analyses, has potential for identifying the clinical utility of critical SNVs in AD prediction.The ability to control one's own emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in early life predicts a range of positive outcomes in later life, including longevity. We measured children's self-control across their first decade of life using a multi-occasion/multi-informant strategy. We measured their pace of aging and aging preparedness in midlife using measures derived from biological and physiological assessments, structural brain-imaging scans, observer ratings, self-reports, informant reports, and administrative records. As adults, children with better self-control aged more slowly in their bodies and showed fewer signs of aging in their brains. By midlife, these children were also better equipped to manage a range of later-life health, financial, and social demands. Associations with children's self-control could be separated from their social class origins and intelligence, indicating that self-control might be an active ingredient in healthy aging. Children also shifted naturally in their level of self-control across adult life, suggesting the possibility that self-control may be a malleable target for intervention. Furthermore, individuals' self-control in adulthood was associated with their aging outcomes after accounting for their self-control in childhood, indicating that midlife might offer another window of opportunity to promote healthy aging.Biodiversity is declining worldwide. Among functional guilds, herbivores are disproportionately likely to be declining from harvest, with important implications for plant communities and nutrient cycling.
    Kallikrein (PKa), generated by activation of its precursor prekallikrein (PK), plays a role in the contact activation phase of coagulation and functions in the kallikrein-kinin system to generate bradykinin. The general dogma has been that the contribution of PKa to the coagulation cascade is dependent on its action on FXII. Recently this dogma has been challenged by studies in human plasma showing thrombin generation due to PKa activity on FIX and also by murine studies showing formation of FIXa-antithrombin complexes in FXI deficient mice. In this study, we demonstrate high-affinity binding interactions between PK(a) and FIX(a) using surface plasmon resonance and show that these interactions are likely to occur under physiological conditions. Furthermore, we directly demonstrate dose- and time-dependent cleavage of FIX by PKa in a purified system by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis and chromogenic assays. By using normal pooled plasma and a range of coagulation factor-deficient plasmas, we show that this action of PKa on FIX not only results in thrombin generation, but also promotes fibrin formation in the absence of FXII or FXI. Comparison of the kinetics of either FXIa- or PKa-induced activation of FIX suggest that PKa could be a significant physiological activator of FIX. Our data indicate that the coagulation cascade needs to be redefined to indicate that PKa can directly activate FIX. These data add to observational studies showing detrimental cognitive effect of lower blood pressure values in very old subjects, with cognitive impairment, disability, and complex health problems. Regarding longevity, observational studies confirm protective effects of lower blood pressure values, although systolic blood pressure less then 130 mmHg are associated with greater mortality risk in subjects with cognitive and/or motor impairment. On the whole antihypertensive treatment might decrease the risk of cognitive impairment in older, robust, high vascular risk subjects. The simultaneous co-hexistence of the two conditions is associated with mortality rates higher than those observed in individuals with only one or none of them. Patients with concomitant HF and AF suffer from even worse symptoms and poorer prognosis, yet evidence-based evaluation and management of this group of patients is lacking. In this review, we evaluate the common mechanisms for the development of AF in HF patients and vice versa, focusing on the evidence for potential treatment strategies. Recent data have suggested that these patients may respond differently if compared to those with HF or AF alone. The management of elderly patients should be based on the evaluation of ischemic and hemorrhagic risk, life expectancy, comorbidities and parameters that are not included in the scores recommended by the current guidelines such as frailty and disability. In the era of "precision medicine", the evaluation of bleeding and ischaemic risk in elderly patients must be a dynamic process because of the risk changing over time. A"tailored therapy by individualized medicine" is the key of management strategy.Rates of cardiac pacemaker implantation rise with age, and, meanwhile, elderly patient may be at great risk of complications, as pneumothorax, lead perforation, or pocket dehiscence. The use of leadless pacemaker could overcome peri- and post-procedural complications related to the presence of transvenous leads and pocket. The study aims to investigate feasibility and outcomes of Micra Transcatheter Pacing System (M-TPS) implantation in elderly, which represents a challenge for conventional cardiac pacing. Between May 2014 and July 2019, 109 patients (88 males, mean age 77.71±9.68 years) underwent M-TPS implantation at our Center, targeting a non-apical site of delivery when feasible. Study population was divided into two groups according to age (group 1 less then 79 years vs group 2 group 2 ≥80 years). The outcome evaluation included electrical performance at hospital discharge, and during follow-up. In 46/109 cases (34 males, 73.91%) M-TPS was implanted in patients older than 80 years. There were no statistically significant differences between groups for demographics characteristics, except for age. The procedure was performed via the right femoral access in 102/109 cases and was successful in all cases, with no device-related events. No differences were observed between groups in procedure duration, single device delivery, electrical performance at implant and at 12 month F-U. MTP-S implant is an effective and safe procedure in elderly patients, with similar electrical performance and outcome compared with younger patients at mid-term follow-up.
