Nicotine and tobacco specific nitrosamines (TSNAs) were measured on vape-shop surfaces and materials (glass, paper, clothing, rubber and fur ball) placed in the vape-shops (14 days) to study thirdhand exposures. Results Airborne PM2.5, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and nicotine concentrations during shop opening hours were 21, 3.3, 4.0, and 3.8 times higher than the levels during shop closing hours, respectively. PM2.5 concentrations were correlated with the number of e-cigarette users present in vape-shops (ρ=0.366-0.761, p less then 0.001). Surface nicotine, 4-(N-methyl-N-nitrosamino)-4-(3-pyridyl)butanal (NNA), and 4-(Methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) were also detected at levels of 223.6±313.2 μg/m2, 4.78±11.8 ng/m2, and 44.8±102.3 ng/m2, respectively. Substantial amounts of nicotine (0-2073 μg/m2) deposited on the materials placed within the vape-shops, and NNA (0-474.4 ng/m2) and NNK (0-184.0 ng/m2) were also formed on these materials. The deposited nicotine concentrations were strongly correlated with the median number of active vapers present in a vape-shop per hour (ρ=0.894-0.949, p=0.04-0.051). NNK levels on the material surfaces were significantly associated with surface nicotine levels (ρ=0.645, p=0.037). Conclusions Indoor vaping leads to secondhand and thirdhand e-cigarette aerosol exposures. Thirdhand exposures induced by e-cigarette vaping are comparable or higher than that induced by cigarette smoking. A PGPB strain, Aquitalea magnusonii H3, was inoculated to duckweed at different cell densities or timings in the presence of three environmental bacterial communities. The results showed that strain H3 improved duckweed growth by 11.7-32.1% in five out of nine experiments. Quantitative-PCR and amplicon sequencing analyses showed that strain H3 successfully colonized duckweed after 1 and 3 d of inoculations in all cultivation tests. However, it significantly decreased in numbers after 7 d, and similar bacterial communities were observed on duckweed regardless of H3 inoculation. Predicted metagenome analysis suggested that genes related to bacterial chemotactic motility and surface attachment system are consistently enriched through community assembly on duckweed.

Pre-hospital and in-hospital acute stroke pathways were reorganized to prioritize COVID-19 management and, in severely affected regions of Italy and France, stroke care was centralized to a limited number of centers, whereas the remaining stroke units were dedicated to patients with COVID-19. Access to acute stroke diagnostics and time-dependent therapies was limited or delayed because of reduced capacities of emergency services due to the burden of patients with COVID-19. A marked reduction in the number of patients presenting with transient ischaemic attack and stroke was noted in the emergency departments of all three countries. Although we only have preliminary data, these conditions may have affected stroke outcome. These indirect effects of the COVID-19 pandemic could negate the efforts of stroke neurologists over the last few years to improve outcome and reduce mortality of stroke patients. A total of 2072 rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, 1,004 brown trout Salmo trutta and 468 brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis were screened from 113 localities within 7 river basins during June 2017 through October 2019. Infections were detected by pepsin-trypsin digest, microscopy and the species-specific nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in 19 localities across 6 river basins. Myxospore morphology was indistinguishable from the published literature. In 2019, five rainbow trout that symptomatic for whirling disease (sloping neurocranium and lordosis) were captured and processed for histopathology. Myxospores were detected in the calvarial cartilage of two deformed trout with associated erosion of the cartilage consistent with reported whirling disease lesions. In contrast, an active intraocular prosthesis, which works as an implantable wireless camera, can capture real-time images and transmit them to a cortical visual prosthesis to restore partial vision of the patients. This active device has distinct advantages in that it can garner a variety of image information while focusing on objects in accordance with natural eye movements, compared with a glasses-mounted camera and implanted micro-photodiodes in typical artificial vision systems. Coated with an epoxy and sealed by an elastomer for biocompatibility as well as durability, the active intraocular prosthesis was fabricated in a spherical form miniaturized enough to be inserted into the eye. Its operation was evaluated by wireless image acquisition displaying a processed gray-scale image. Furthermore, signal-to-noise ratio measurements were conducted to find a reliable communication range of the fabricated prosthesis, while it was covered by an 8-mm-thick biological medium that mimicked in vivo environments. The incidence of perioperative stroke varies and is dependent on the specific type of surgery performed. This chapter overviews the risks, mechanisms, and acute evaluation and management of perioperative stroke in four surgical populations cardiac surgery, carotid endarterectomy, neurosurgery, and non-cardiac/non-carotid/non-neurological surgeries.We noticed that syphilis patients seem to be more susceptible to diabetes and the lesions often involve the kidneys, but the pathogenesis is not yet completely understood. A conventional intraocular prosthesis is a passive device that helps blind patients underwent eye enucleation to maintain the shape of an eyeball. In contrast, an active intraocular prosthesis, which works as an implantable wireless camera, can capture real-time images and transmit them to a cortical visual prosthesis to restore partial vision of the patients. This active device has distinct advantages in that it can garner a variety of image information while focusing on objects in accordance with natural eye movements, compared with a glasses-mounted camera and implanted micro-photodiodes in typical artificial vision systems. METHODS A fractal coronary bifurcation bench model made of flexible urethane was used, and crossover single-stent implantation (Xience Sierra, Abbott Vascular, Santa Clara, CA, n = 12) was performed from the MB with the re-POT sequence. During the re-POT sequence, the jailing rate at the SB ostium assessed by videoscopy was compared between SB inflation using PBED technique (PBED group, n = 6) and SB inflation using conventional balloon dilation (conventional group, n = 6).   • KGaA, Weinheim.OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate histologic and histomorphometric bone characteristics with a focus on vitality after lateral alveolar ridge augmentation using an autogenous bone graft as a block covered by either a platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) membrane (test group) or a standard procedure involving coverage of the bone block with a deproteinized bovine bone mineral and a resorbable collagen membrane (control group). MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 27 (test = 14, control = 13) partially edentulous patients with indication for bone block augmentation before implant installation were included. For analyses, a biopsy of augmented bone was retrieved six months after bone grafting. RESULTS Histologic evaluation of augmented bone revealed a predominance of non-vital bone towards the periosteum and few localized areas of vital bone in the center of the graft in both groups. In contrast, augmented bone towards the native bone demonstrated extensive bone remodeling in both groups. Histomorphometric analyses demonstrated a mean of 14% vital bone, 80% non-vital bone, 5% soft tissue, and 1% blood vessels in the test group. In the control group, the corresponding shares were 14% vital bone, 63% non-vital bone, 22% soft tissue, and 1% blood vessels. However, few studies evaluate ecosystem responses across approaches. Also, managers lack information about how species traits mediate responses across management approaches, a potentially substantial source of spatial and temporal variation in population and community responses that if ignored may hinder effectiveness of management programs. We used data collected over eight years from a manipulative experiment to test how four forest management strategies influenced avian community composition and wood production. After harvesting, we evaluated responses to three levels of plant cover suppression (Light, Moderate, and Intensive herbicide applications) in relation to a control without herbicide. We predicted the Moderate and Intensive treatments would exert strong negative effects on leaf-gleaning insectivores, including species of conservation concern due gains in wood biomass. Current practices provided more balance between two ecosystem responses, avian diversity and wood production, compared to less intensive alternatives. When short-term negative effects occur, the spatial distribution of harvesting and regeneration regionally indicates that habitat is often available locally to support leaf-gleaning and non-leaf-gleaning bird populations while releasing other portions of the region for high priority conservation objectives including late-successional forest reserves. All rights reserved.OBJECTIVE To determine whether foot structure varies according to the presence and radiographic severity of first metatarsophalangeal joint osteoarthritis (first MTPJ OA). METHODS Weight-bearing dorso-plantar and lateral radiographs were obtained for the symptomatic foot of 185 participants (105 females, aged 22 to 85 years) with clinically diagnosed first MTPJ OA. A validated atlas was used to classify participants as having radiographic first MTPJ OA and to stratified into three categories of severity (none/mild, moderate, severe). Bone length, width and angular measures of the forefoot and medial arch were performed on radiographs, and differences between categories were compared using univariate general linear models, adjusting for confounders. RESULTS One hundred and fifty participants were categorised as having radiographic first MTPJ OA, and participants were further stratified into none/mild (n = 35), moderate (n = 69) or severe (n = 81) OA categories. Participants with radiographically defined first MTPJ OA displayed a greater hallux abductus interphalangeal angle. Increasing radiographic severity of first MTPJ OA was associated with a larger hallux abductus interphalangeal angle, wider first metatarsal and proximal phalanx and smaller intermetatarsal angle. No differences in medial arch measurements were observed between the categories. CONCLUSION First ray alignment and morphology differ according to the presence and severity of first MTPJ OA.     KGaA, Weinheim.OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate histologic and histomorphometric bone characteristics with a focus on vitality after lateral alveolar ridge augmentation using an autogenous bone graft as a block covered by either a platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) membrane (test group) or a standard procedure involving coverage of the bone block with a deproteinized bovine bone mineral and a resorbable collagen membrane (control group). MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 27 (test = 14, control = 13) partially edentulous patients with indication for bone block augmentation before implant installation were included. For analyses, a biopsy of augmented bone was retrieved six months after bone grafting. RESULTS Histologic evaluation of augmented bone revealed a predominance of non-vital bone towards the periosteum and few localized areas of vital bone in the center of the graft in both groups. In contrast, augmented bone towards the native bone demonstrated extensive bone remodeling in both groups. Histomorphometric analyses demonstrated a mean of 14% vital bone, 80% non-vital bone, 5% soft tissue, and 1% blood vessels in the test group. In the control group, the corresponding shares were 14% vital bone, 63% non-vital bone, 22% soft tissue, and 1% blood vessels. However, few studies evaluate ecosystem responses across approaches. Also, managers lack information about how species traits mediate responses across management approaches, a potentially substantial source of spatial and temporal variation in population and community responses that if ignored may hinder effectiveness of management programs. We used data collected over eight years from a manipulative experiment to test how four forest management strategies influenced avian community composition and wood production. After harvesting, we evaluated responses to three levels of plant cover suppression (Light, Moderate, and Intensive herbicide applications) in relation to a control without herbicide. We predicted the Moderate and Intensive treatments would exert strong negative effects on leaf-gleaning insectivores, including species of conservation concern due gains in wood biomass. Current practices provided more balance between two ecosystem responses, avian diversity and wood production, compared to less intensive alternatives. When short-term negative effects occur, the spatial distribution of harvesting and regeneration regionally indicates that habitat is often available locally to support leaf-gleaning and non-leaf-gleaning bird populations while releasing other portions of the region for high priority conservation objectives including late-successional forest reserves. All rights reserved.OBJECTIVE To determine whether foot structure varies according to the presence and radiographic severity of first metatarsophalangeal joint osteoarthritis (first MTPJ OA). METHODS Weight-bearing dorso-plantar and lateral radiographs were obtained for the symptomatic foot of 185 participants (105 females, aged 22 to 85 years) with clinically diagnosed first MTPJ OA. A validated atlas was used to classify participants as having radiographic first MTPJ OA and to stratified into three categories of severity (none/mild, moderate, severe). Bone length, width and angular measures of the forefoot and medial arch were performed on radiographs, and differences between categories were compared using univariate general linear models, adjusting for confounders. RESULTS One hundred and fifty participants were categorised as having radiographic first MTPJ OA, and participants were further stratified into none/mild (n = 35), moderate (n = 69) or severe (n = 81) OA categories. Participants with radiographically defined first MTPJ OA displayed a greater hallux abductus interphalangeal angle. Increasing radiographic severity of first MTPJ OA was associated with a larger hallux abductus interphalangeal angle, wider first metatarsal and proximal phalanx and smaller intermetatarsal angle. No differences in medial arch measurements were observed between the categories. CONCLUSION First ray alignment and morphology differ according to the presence and severity of first MTPJ OA.   • We evaluated 113 pediatric patients with chronic hepatitis C from 2009 to 2019 at a Brazilian tertiary center. Seventy patients received pegylated-interferon treatment. The sustained virologic response was 61.4%, and 92.8% reported side effects. Currently, we are following 39 patients with chronic hepatitis C, 24 of whom are eligible for treatment with direct-acting antivirals according to Brazilian recommendations.Background Abdominal tuberculosis (TB) in children is poorly described and often poses a diagnostic challenge. We evaluated abdominal involvement in children presenting with bacteriologically confirmed TB. Methods We undertook a retrospective study at Tygerberg Hospital, Cape Town, from January 1, 2014, through December 31, 2018, of all children ( less then 13 years) diagnosed with bacteriologically confirmed TB, in whom abdominal involvement was found. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/Y-27632.html Demographic and clinical data were collected through folder review, laboratory records and imaging reports. Results Of 966 children with bacteriologically confirmed TB, 111 (11.5%) had abdominal involvement; 16 (14.4%) were excluded from further analysis because of lack of clinical data. The main gastrointestinal symptoms/signs were weight loss (84.2%), abdominal distention (54.7%), hepatomegaly (60.0%) and abdominal pain (26.3%). The main pathological types were intra-abdominal lymph nodes (68.4%), solid organ involvement (54.7%), peritoneal type (23.2%) and intestinal type (10.5%). Splenic abscesses and solid organ involvement on ultrasonography were more common in HIV-positive children (P less then 0.001 and P = 0.008, respectively). Liver abscesses were associated with age less than 5 years (P = 0.03), while abdominal lymphadenopathy on ultrasonography was more common in children older than 5 years (P = 0.038). Abdominal specimens were collected in an attempt to identify Mycobacterium tuberculosis in 15 of 95 (15.8%) patients and were positive in 13 of 15 (86.7%). Conclusions Over 10% of children with confirmed TB had abdominal involvement. A 2018 ballot initiative in Kansas City, Missouri, would allow health inspectors to investigate complaints of poor or hazardous conditions in rental housing. Objectives Because the Kansas City, Missouri Health Department cannot legally advocate directly for voter support of public health policies, department staff used outside consultants to demonstrate the potential positive impact of environmental initiatives. Design The Win-Win model provides a standardized, unbiased economic analysis of interventions to help public health officials make informed policy and program decisions and engage in cross-sectoral collaboration. Results The Win-Win model found that if an asthma home remediation program were provided for almost 7000 low-income children in Kansas City, it would result in 55 000 fewer days of missed school annually among other promising outcomes. The model also showed a $1.67 return-on-investment to local and state government for each dollar spent and a 3-year breakeven point. The results from the Win-Win model were integrated into Kansas City's Community Health Improvement Plan and made available on the Win-Win Project Web site. The proposed law to promote rental inspections passed with 57% of the vote. Conclusions The model results allowed for an informed, unbiased point of evidence that the health department could present to community groups and elected officials leading up to the vote on the health inspection initiative.Context Despite attention to federal and state governments' response to the US opioid crisis, few studies have systematically examined local governments' role in tackling this problem. Design A cross-sectional survey and multistage sampling procedure. Setting/participants Of all 358 county governments in 5 purposively selected states (Colorado, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Washington) surveyed, 171 counties (response rate = 47.8%) with complete data on self-reported policy and programmatic activities and predictor variables were eligible for analysis. Main outcome measures Nineteen opioid policy and programmatic activities were analyzed individually and combined into a latent implementation ability index using empirical Bayes means estimates.

  • Past research showed on-road emissions patterns unique to hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), indicating the need to account for them in emissions models as projected HEV sales increase over the coming decades. This work defines and characterizes a variable that quantifies HEV operating behavior to inform future development of new HEV emissions models based on current knowledge of conventional vehicle (CV) emissions patterns. Instantaneous hybridization factor (IHF), was quantified using on-road data collected from a 2010 Toyota Camry HEV. IHF is the ratio of electric system power to total system power and accounts for energy storage in the high voltage battery (IHF ranges from -1 to +1). Relationships between IHF and vehicle specific power (VSP), road type and road grade were examined. Negative VSP resulted in regenerative braking operation (IHF = -0.01 to -1) 90% of the time. IHF identified the VSP range where HEV operation was highly variable (VSP = -1 to 8 kW/ton) when driving at speeds below the ICE-off threshold (42 mph). VSP and IHF together account for 76-86% of the variability in HEV CO2 emissions in this study. CO2 model results using VSP computed with the measured real-world road grade (R2 = 0.86) gave improved fits over the no-grade VSP model (R2 = 0.69). This study establishes one framework for calculating the instantaneous HEV power split, confirms the need to include road grade in VSP for accurate modeling of vehicle emissions, and identified the need for significant improvements in on-board diagnostic (OBD) scantool measurement requirements for HEVs in three areas (1) temporal resolution (sub-second to capture transient events such as ICE restarts); (2) simultaneous data logging capability for multiple controller area networks (i.e., engine and HEV parameters together); and (3) improved data precision.The notion of water footprint provides a novel perspective for understanding the relationship between physical water and virtual water, especially in agricultural production. In this study, with the help of CROPWAT 8.0 model, we estimate the water footprint requirement (WFr) of main crops growth for 2005, 2010 and 2015 in Zhangjiakou City, an extreme water shortage region in northern China, and three new indicators are introduced, i.e., green water footprint occupancy rate (GWFor), blue water footprint deficit (BWFd), and virtual water consumption per output value (VWV). The results indicate that the total WFr increased from 1.671 billion m3 to 1.852 billion m3 during the study period, of which the green water was always about twice as the blue water. Cereals, as the main staple food, had the largest WFr, while the WFr of potatoes increased the fastest, which was the result of large-scale promotion of potato cultivation in recent years. The spatial characteristics of the GWFor and BWFd are closely related to altitude, that is, the GWFor was less than 50% in higher-altitude Bashang area, while it was more than 50% in lower-altitude Baxia area, and the BWFd was generally smaller in Bashang area than in Baxia area. Due to differences in crop types and food prices, higher water footprint food productivity does not absolutely mean higher water footprint economic productivity. Therefore, it is vital to consider from two perspectives (food yields priority or economic benefits priority) to formulate a reasonable water footprint utilization policy. We used directed content analysis of news articles to code content into a priori categories both to identify salient themes and to characterize their valence. Results One hundred forty-six unique articles matched our search terms. Overall, there was a steady increase in epilepsy reporting over time, with a majority of articles published with a positive tone. Neuromodulation was the focus of over 50% of all the articles in the time points analyzed. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) and deep-brain stimulation (DBS) were discussed more prominently than other types of neurotechnological interventions; VNS was the neurotechnological focus in 39% of the pediatric articles; resective surgery was the focus in 34% of adult articles. Access, support, and epilepsy literacy were the central themes in the context of ethical, legal, and social issues. Significance News media can influence the trust that the public places in science and medicine, and by extension, influences health policy.   • Background As one of the novel therapeutic drugs that targets Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), 75 mg rimegepant has been used for the acute management of migraine, which is one of the most common neurological diseases worldwide. Several clinical trials have been conducted to investigate the efficacy and safety of rimegepant for the acute management of migraine, but no systematic review of existing literature has been performed. We therefore performed a meta-analysis to investigate the efficacy and safety of rimegepant in treatment of patients with migraine. Method Pubmed, Embased, and Cochrane Library were searched from January 2001 to August 2019 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Four RCTs with 3,827 patients were finally included in our study. In addition, there was no statistically significant increase in adverse events compared with the placebo. Conclusions 75 mg rimegepant had good efficacy and safety for acute treatment of migraine. Therefore, this 2D nanosheet-based photonic nanomedicine has been gaining tremendous attention as both gene delivering vehicles and photothermal agents, which create synergistic effects in the treatment of different diseases. In this review, we briefly provide an overview of the following two parts regarding this type of photonic nanomedicine (1) mechanism and advantages of nanosheets in gene delivery and photothermal therapy, respectively. (2) mechanism of synergistic effects in nanosheet-mediated combined gene and photothermal therapies and their examples in a few representative nanosheets (e.g., graphene oxide, black phosphorus, and translational metal dichalcogenide). Both MZRW and Senna are better than a placebo; relative to Senna and a placebo, MZRW displayed a more sustained effect during the 8-week follow-up period. The characteristic pharmacological mechanism responsible for this observation is still unclear. To explore this, we collected pre- and post-treatment serum samples of 85 FC patients from MZRW/Senna/placebo treatment groups for pharmacometabolomic analysis. An ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer (UPLC-MS) was used for metabolic profiling and quantification. In vivo studies were conducted in constipated C57BL/6J **** to verify the effects and corresponding mechanism(s) of the action of MZRW. Pearson correlation analysis, paired t-test, one-way ANOVA analysis, χ2 test, and Student t-test were used to interpret the clinical and preclinical data.

  • In the subtropics, agricultural activities such as beekeeping are greatly influenced by environmental challenges. In the desert of Central Arabia, honeybees forage on limited prairies that are affected by adverse weather conditions. Bee colonies reduce their field activities during extremely hot-dry-windy weather. This study investigated whether nectar-rich melliferous flora enhance the field activities of two honeybee subspecies, Apis mellifera jemenitica (indigenous) and A. m. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/elsubrutinib.html carnica (exotic), despite the presence of severe weather conditions. The foraging and pollen-gathering activities of the two subspecies were evaluated on Acacia trees (Acacia gerrardii Benth.), a common subtropical, summery endemic bee plant, in the central desert of the Arabian Peninsula. The native colonies were significantly (p less then 0.001) more active foragers than the exotic colonies (109 ± 4 and 49 ± 2 workers/colony/3 min, respectively). Similarly, the native colonies recruited significantly (p ˂ 0.01) more active pollen-gathering bees than the imported colonies (22 ± 1 and 7 ± 1 workers/colony/3 min, respectively). Furthermore, far more food was collected by the indigenous colonies than by the exotic colonies, and a higher portion of all field trips was allocated to pollen gathering by the indigenous bees than by the imported bees. The nectar-rich Acacia trees reduced the negative effects of hot-dry-windy weather. Healthcare professionals, especially dentists, are exposed to a higher risk of getting infected due to close contact with infected patients. The current study was conducted to assess anxiety and fear of getting infected among dentists while working during the current novel coronavirus diseases (COVID-19) outbreak. In addition, dentists' knowledge about various practice modifications to combat COVID-19 has been evaluated. A cross-sectional study was conducted using an online survey from 10th to 17th March 2020. The well-constructed questionnaire was designed and registered at online website (Kwiksurveys) and validated. A total of 669 participants from 30 different countries across the world responded. After scrutiny, completed questionnaires (n = 650) were included in the study. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 25. Chi-Square and Spearman correlation tests were applied to control confounders arecommended guidelines to emergency treatment only or closed down practices for an uncertain period.INTRODUCTION Mortality caused by ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) has declined because of greater use of primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). It is unknown if patients >75 have similar survival as peers. We aim to know it stratifying by sex and assessing how the sex may impact the survival. METHODS We retrospectively selected all patients >75 who suffered a STEMI treated with primary PCI at our institution. We compared their survival with that of the reference population (general population matched by age, sex, and geographical region). A Cox-regression analysis controlling for clinical factors was performed to know if sex was a risk factor. RESULTS Total of 450 patients were studied. Survival at 1, 3, and 5 years of follow-up for patients who survived the first 30 days was 91.22% (CI95% 87.80-93.72), 79.71% (CI95% 74.58-83.92), and 68.02% (CI95% 60.66-74.3), whereas in the reference population it was 93.11%, 79.10%, and 65.01%, respectively. Sex was not a risk factor, Hazard Ratio = 1.02 (CI95% 0.67-1.53; p = 0.92). CONCLUSIONS Life expectancy of patients suffering a STEMI is nowadays intimately linked to survival in the first 30 days. After one year, the risk of death for both men and women seems similar to that of the general population.This study introduced an experimental bioactive glass (BG) with a lower Na2O content than conventional BG 45S5 (10.5 wt% vs. 24.5 wt%), additionally containing CaF2 (12 wt%) and a network connectivity similar to that of BG 45S5. A series of experimental composites functionalized with 5-40 wt% of the novel BG was prepared and compared to a corresponding series of experimental composites functionalized with 5-40 wt% of BG 45S5. Commercial acidneutralizing materials (alkasite, giomer, and glass ionomer) were used as references. The capabilities of the materials to neutralize hydrochloric acid (pH = 2.6) and lactic acid (pH = 4.5) were evaluated by real-time pH measurements over 1 h. The degree of conversion and precipitation of calcium phosphate were also investigated. Data were analyzed using one-way and Welch ANOVA at an overall level of significance of 0.05. The acid-neutralizing potential of the experimental BG incorporated into resin composites was generally comparable to that of BG 45S5, and better than that of a giomer and glass ionomer. Fluorine was identified in the precipitate that developed on the composites functionalized with the experimental BG, suggesting a capability of forming fluorapatite. Unlike the 45S5 composition, the experimental BG did not impair the degree of conversion of resin composites. The novel BG filler is therefore an interesting candidate for future investigations of caries-preventive resin composites, and their potential clinical applicability for restorative, preventive, and orthodontic purposes.This study reports a relationship between Akt3 expression and tissue-specific regulation of the pI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway by copaiba essential oil. Akt3, a protein kinase B isoform important for the regulation of neuronal development, exhibited differential expression levels in cells of various origins. In neuronal and microglial cells, where Akt3 is present, copaiba essential oil positively regulated the pI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway. In contrast, in liver cells and T lymphocytes, where Akt3 is absent, copaiba essential oil negatively regulated the pI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway. The expression of Akt3 via plasmid DNA in liver cells led to positive regulatory effects by copaiba essential oil on the pI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway. In contrast, inhibition of Akt3 expression in neuronal cells via small interfering RNA molecules targeting Akt3 transcripts abrogated the regulatory effects of copaiba essential oil on the pI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway. Interestingly, Akt3 expression did not impact the regulatory effects of copaiba essential oil on other signaling pathways.
