Despite the wide possibility of conclusion work, the dissertation, accompanied by an article and/or technical productions, is the main form of presentation.Objective to develop and validate the first immersive virtual reality simulation addressing vacuum blood collection in adult patients - VIDA-Nursing v1.0. Method methodological study to validate 14 steps of the vacuum blood collection procedure in adults, designed to develop the immersive virtual reality simulator VIDA-Nursing v1.0. It was assessed by 15 health workers and 15 nursing undergraduate students in terms of visual, interactive, movement simulation reality, teaching and user-friendly aspects. Results the workers considered 79.6% of the items to be valid, while the students considered 66.7% of the items valid; most of the demands can be implemented in the system by improving future versions. Conclusion the simulator was considered a promising and innovative tool to teach vacuum blood collection in adults as it can be combined with other resources currently used to introduce this topic and technique in the education of undergraduate nursing students.The World Health Organization has emphasized that one of the most important questions to address regarding the covid-19 pandemic is to understand risk factors for disease severity. We conducted a brief review that synthesizes the available evidence and provides a judgment on the consistency of the association between risk factors and a composite end-point of severe-fatal covid-19. Additionally, we also conducted a comparability analysis of risk factors across 17 studies. We found evidence supporting a total of 60 predictors for disease severity, of which seven were deemed of high consistency, 40 of medium and 13 of low. Among the factors with high consistency of association, we found age, C-reactive protein, D-dimer, albumin, body temperature, SOFA score and diabetes. The results suggest that diabetes might be the most consistent comorbidity predicting disease severity and that future research should carefully consider the comparability of reporting cases, factors, and outcomes along the different stages of the natural history of covid-19.OBJECTIVE To verify the associations of leisure walking with perceived and objective measures of neighborhood environmental factors stratified by gender and socioeconomic status (SES) in Brazilian adolescents. METHODS Cross-sectional study with a random sample of 1,130 high school students (47.3% girls; aged 14 to 20 years old) from Porto Alegre, Brazil. Leisure walking and SES were self-reported by the adolescents. Perceived environmental factors were assessed through Neighborhood Environment Walkability Scale for Youth (NEWS-Y). Objective measures were evaluated using Geographic Information Systems, with road network calculated around the adolescent's residential address, using 0.5km and 1.0km buffers. Data collection was carried out in 2017 and generalized linear regression models were used. RESULTS Leisure walking was positively associated with access to services (0.5 km buffers [Odds ratio (OR) = 2.22] 1.0 km buffers [OR = 2.17]) and lower distance to parks and squares (0.5 km [OR=2.80] 1.0 km [OR = 2.73]) in girls from low SES. Residential density (0.5 km [OR = 1.57] 1.0 km [OR = 1.54]) and walkability index (0.5 km [OR = 1.17] 1.0 km [OR = 1.20]) were associated with leisure walking in girls from middle SES. Boys from low SES showed an inverse association between crime safety and leisure walking (0.5 km [OR = 0.59] 1.0 km [OR = 0.63]). Neighborhood recreation facilities was positively associated with leisure walking in middle SES (0.5 km [OR = 1.55] 1.0 km [OR = 1.60]). Land use mix (0.5 km [OR = 1.81] 1.0 km [OR = 1.81]), neighborhood recreation facilities (0.5 km [OR = 2.32] 1.0 km [OR = 2.28]) and places for walking (0.5 km [OR=2.07] 1.0 km [OR=2.22]) were positively associated with leisure walking in high SES. Adolescents who do not consume food while watching TV had a higher weekly consumption of fruits (3.98, SD = 2.0 versus 3.39, SD = 2.1) and vegetables (4.1, SD = 2.2 versus 3.4, SD = 2.3). Adolescents that consume food while watching TV had higher weekly consumption of fried foods (3.1, SD = 2.0 versus 2.3, SD = 1.7), sweets (4.1, SD = 2.1 versus 3.3, SD = 2.1), soft drinks (3.2, SD = 2.1 versus 2.2, SD = 1.9), and snacks (2.3, SD = 2.0 versus 1.6, SD = 1.7). For 73,8% of the sample, food advertisements induce product consumerism, most commonly sweets and fast foods. Buying or asking to buy food after seeing it on the television was associated with fried foods (OR = 1.36, 95%CI = 1.03- 1.79), sweets (OR = 1.69, 95%CI = 1.30-2.18), and snacks (OR = 1.57, 95%CI = 1.12-2.22). CONCLUSION Food advertisements were associated with greater consumption of fried foods, sweets, and snacks in adolescents, even after adjusting for confounding factors.OBJECTIVE To describe the process of elaboration and validation of the Scale of Perceptions about Alcohol Consumption in Higher Education Students in a Portuguese sample, considering the relationship between alcohol use rates and students' perceptions about the effects of this consumption. METHODS The validation study included 531 Portuguese college freshmen who answered the instrument, which is composed of five items that express positive perceptions and five items that express negative perceptions about the effects of alcohol consumption. RESULTS Evidence of content validity, internal structure and external variables were obtained. The results of the factor analysis confirm the distribution of positive and negative perceptions by two different factors according to the theoretical model. Adequate internal consistency indexes were obtained for each dimension. The data obtained showed expected correlations between the perceptions and consumption behaviors of the students, indicating evidence of criterion validity of the scale.

In hospitalized patients, lipid emulsions are an integral part of balanced parenteral nutrition. Traditionally, a single lipid source, soybean oil, has been given to patients and was usually regarded as just a source of energy and to prevent essential fatty-acid deficiency. However, mixtures of different lipid emulsions have now become widely available, including mixtures of soybean oil, medium-chain triglycerides, olive oil, and fish oil. Fish oil is high in the ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). There is a growing body of evidence that these ω-3 fatty acids can exert beneficial immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and inflammation-resolution effects across a wide range of patient groups including surgical, cancer, and critically ill patients. At least in part, these effects are realized via potent specialized pro-resolution mediators (SPMs). Moreover, parenteral nutrition including ω-3 fatty acids can result in additional clinical benefits over the use of standard lipid emulsions, such as reductions in infection rates and length of hospital and intensive care unit stay. Clinical and experimental evidence is reviewed regarding lipid emulsion use in a variety of hospitalized patient groups, including surgical, critically ill, sepsis, trauma, and acute pancreatitis patients. Practical aspects of lipid emulsion use in critically ill patients are also considered, such as how to determine and fulfill energy expenditure, how and when to consider parenteral nutrition, duration of infusion, and safety monitoring. © 2020 The Authors. Potential contributing factors include oxidative stress, high ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) and phytosterol content, and relatively low α-tocopherol levels. Fish oil has become an important component of modern, composite lipid emulsions, in part owing to a growing evidence base concerning its biological effects in a variety of preclinical models. These biological activities of fish oil are mainly attributed to its ω-3 PUFA content, particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). DHA and EPA have known mechanisms of action, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antioxidative properties. The main purpose of the consensus statements is to assist healthcare professionals by providing practical guidance on common clinical questions related to the provision of lipid emulsions as part of parenteral nutrition (PN). METHODS The summit was designed to allow interactive discussion and consensus development. The resulting consensus statements represent the collective opinion of the members of the expert panel, which was informed and supported by scientific evidence and clinical experience. RESULTS The current article summarizes the key discussion topics from the summit and provides a set of consensus statements designed to complement existing evidence-based guidelines. Lipid emulsions are a major component of PN, serving as a condensed source of energy and essential fatty acids.

METHODS We conducted GWAS for UAE in 7805 individuals of Asian ancestry from health-survey data collected by Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization (ToMMo) and Iwate Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization (IMM). The SNP genotype data were obtained with a SNP microarray. After imputation using a haplotype panel consisting of 2000 genome sequencing, 4,962,728 SNP markers were used for the GWAS. RESULTS Eighteen SNPs at 14 loci (GRM7, EXOC1/NMU, LPA, STEAP1B/RAPGEF5, SEMA3D, PRKAG2, TRIQK, SERTM1, TPT1-AS1, OR5AU1, TSHR, FMN1/RYR3, COPRS, and BRD1) were associated with UAE in the Japanese individuals. A locus with particularly strong associations was observed on TSHR, chromosome 14 [rs116622332 (p = 3.99 × 10-10)]. CONCLUSION In this study, we successfully identified UAE-associated variant loci in the Japanese population. Further study is required to confirm this association.Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) are a growing family of bacterial protein toxins that cause botulism, a rare but often fatal animal and human disease. They are the most potent toxins known owing to their molecular architecture, which underlies their mechanism of action. BoNTs target peripheral nerve terminals by a unique mode of binding and enter into their cytosol where they cleave SNARE proteins, thus inhibiting the neurotransmitter release. The specificity and rapidity of binding, which limits the anatomical area of its neuroparalytic action, and its reversible action make BoNT a valuable pharmaceutical to treat neurological and non-neurological diseases determined by hyperactivity of cholinergic nerve terminals. RESULTS We identified 24 studies comprising 3877 patients with 311 having LNM (pooled prevalence, 8.1%). The risk of LNM was significantly increased in lymphatic invasion (OR [95% confidence interval] = 4.22 [2.88-6.19]), lymphovascular invasion (LVI) (4.17 [2.90-5.99]), vascular invasion (2.38 [1.65-3.44]), positive vertical margin (2.16 [1.59-2.93]), submucosal invasion depth of ≥ 500 μm (2.14 [1.48-3.09]), and tumor size > 30 mm (1.77 [1.31-2.40]). In contrast, there was no significant association between undifferentiated-type or ulceration (scar) and LNM. When studies were restricted to those that evaluated the adjusted OR, the risk of vascular invasion for LNM did not reach statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS Several pathological factors, most notably lymphatic invasion and LVI, were associated with LNM in patients with noncurative resection after ER for EGC. The proportion of subjects with diabetic retinopathy, neuropathy and nephropathy was greater among patients with criteria for FA compared with patients without this condition (25% vs. 13.2%, 29.5% vs. 21.8% and 32% vs. 22.3%; p = 0.03, p = 0.05 and p = 0.05, respectively).

METHODS We conducted GWAS for UAE in 7805 individuals of Asian ancestry from health-survey data collected by Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization (ToMMo) and Iwate Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization (IMM). The SNP genotype data were obtained with a SNP microarray. After imputation using a haplotype panel consisting of 2000 genome sequencing, 4,962,728 SNP markers were used for the GWAS. RESULTS Eighteen SNPs at 14 loci (GRM7, EXOC1/NMU, LPA, STEAP1B/RAPGEF5, SEMA3D, PRKAG2, TRIQK, SERTM1, TPT1-AS1, OR5AU1, TSHR, FMN1/RYR3, COPRS, and BRD1) were associated with UAE in the Japanese individuals. A locus with particularly strong associations was observed on TSHR, chromosome 14 [rs116622332 (p = 3.99 × 10-10)]. CONCLUSION In this study, we successfully identified UAE-associated variant loci in the Japanese population. This study aimed to better characterize ground glass (type II) and globular (type III) fibrinogen inclusions by the pathological examination of 3 cases and a literature review. Three adults (age 32-64 years; M/F 2/1) were unexpectedly found by liver needle biopsy to have fibrinogen-positive ground glass changes (type II inclusions), against a background of acute hepatitis E, resolving acute cholangitis, or severe lobular hepatitis of unknown etiology. One patient also had fibrinogen-positive intracytoplasmic globules (type III inclusions) in the first biopsy, but they were not present in a second biopsy. None had coagulation abnormalities or hypofibrinogenemia. On immunostaining, both inclusions were strongly positive for not only fibrinogen but also C-reactive protein and C4d. Ultrastructurally, ground glass changes corresponded to membrane-bound cytoplasmic inclusions containing amorphous, granular material. The pathological features of type II fibrinogen inclusions were identical to those of pale bodies in hepatocellular carcinoma. The literature review suggested that type I fibrinogen inclusions characterized by a polygonal appearance are strongly associated with mutations in fibrinogen genes, coagulopathy, and family history, whereas type II/III inclusions are immunoreactive to multiple proteins and typically develop in cases of other unrelated liver diseases. In conclusion, type II and III fibrinogen inclusions do not represent a true hereditary storage disease but instead the collective retention of multiple proteins. Given the lack of clinical significance, a less specific name (e.g., pale body) may be more appropriate for those inclusions. Natural evolution has generated an impressively diverse protein universe via duplication and recombination from a set of protein fragments that served as building blocks. The application of these concepts to the design of new proteins using subdomain-sized fragments from different folds has proven to be experimentally successful. To better understand how evolution has shaped our protein universe, we performed an all-against-all comparison of protein domains representing all naturally existing folds and identified conserved homologous protein fragments. Overall, we found more than 1000 protein fragments of various lengths among different folds through similarity network analysis. These fragments are present in very different protein environments and represent versatile building blocks for protein design. This data is available in our web server called F(old P)uzzle (fuzzle.uni-bayreuth.de), which allows to individually filter the dataset and create customized networks for folds of interest. We believe that our results serve as an invaluable resource for structural and evolutionary biologists and as raw material for the design of custom-made proteins. We intended to compare the two other operator-independent methods assessing endothelial function - the EndoPAT and Laser Doppler flowmetry (LD), and we endeavored to place them on current individual profile of biochemical cardiovascular risk and endothelial function. A total of 61 clinically healthy subjects (aged 29 ± 1y) were investigated. The blood was collected for conventional cardiovascular risk markers, the NO-pathway metabolites (ADMA, L-arginine, SDMA), oxidative-stress-markers (MDA, thiol-index) as well as endothelial and platelet activation markers (sICAM1, sVCAM1, PAI-1, sE-selectin, sP-selectin, VEGF). Subsequently, all participants underwent examination by both EndoPAT and LD. There was a poor correlation between EndoPAT and LD results. No significant differences between participants with preserved and impaired endothelial function regarding endothelial activation nor cardiovascular risk markers were observed. Both methods assess endothelial function independently from the profile of endothelial pro/anti-inflammatory status and conventional risk factors, therefore further prospective studies are needed in order to verify their additional value in the cardiovascular risk stratification.

Our study extends the known distribution of this rare muscular dystrophy and presents the first detailed clinical and genetic characterizations of LGMD R7 cases from the Chinese population. Our work expands the mutation spectrum known for LGMD R7 and emphasizes the need for clinicians to consider TCAP mutations when evaluating patients with symptoms of limb girdle muscular dystrophy. Forty rhizobial strains were isolated from Lotus creticus, L. pusillus and Bituminaria bituminosa endemic to Tunisia, and they belonged to the Mesorhizobium and Ensifer genera based on 16S rDNA sequence phylogeny. According to the concatenated recA and glnII sequence-based phylogeny, four Bituminaria isolates Pb5, Pb12, Pb8 and Pb17 formed a monophyletic group with Mesorhizobium chacoense ICMP14587T, whereas four other strains Pb1, Pb6, Pb13 and Pb15 formed two separate lineages within the Ensifer genus. Among the L. pusillus strains, Lpus9 and Lpus10 showed a 96% identical nucleotide with Ensifer meliloti CCBAU83493T; whereas six other strains could belong to previously undescribed Mesorhizobium and Ensifer species. For L. creticus strains, Lcus37, Lcus39 and Lcus44 showed 98% sequence identity with Ensifer aridi JNVU TP6, and Lcus42 shared a 96% identical nucleotide with Ensifer meliloti CCBAU83493T; whereas another four strains were divergent from all the described Ensifer and Mesorhizobium species. The analysis of the nodC gene-based phylogeny identified four symbiovar groups; Mesorhizobium sp. sv. anthyllidis (Lpus3 and Lpus11 from L. pusillus, Lcus43 from L. creticus), Ensifer medicae sv. meliloti (four strains from L. creticus and two strains from L. pusillus), E. meliloti sv. meliloti (four from L. creticus, four from L. pusillus and four from B. bituminosa). In addition, four B. bituminosa strains (Pb5, Pb8, Pb12, and Pb17) displayed a distinctive nodC sequence distant from those of other symbiovars described to date. According to their symbiotic gene sequences and host range, the B. bituminosa symbionts (Pb5, Pb8, Pb12 and Pb17) would represent a new symbiovar of M. chacoense for which sv. psoraleae is proposed. PURPOSE Radiation therapy delivery during deep inspiration breath-hold (DIBH) reduces the irradiation of the heart and lungs and is therefore recommended for adults with mediastinal lymphoma. However, no studies have addressed the use of DIBH in children. No children received radiation therapy. The children were placed in a potential radiation therapy position. The DIBH was voluntary and monitored using an optical surface system providing visual feedback. Children who performed 3 stable DIBHs of 20 seconds each and remained motionless were deemed DIBH compliant. Compliance, equipment suitability, and coaching were further assessed in a semistructured interview. RESULTS We included 33 children (18 healthy and 15 hospitalized children with cancer) with a mean age of 8.5 years (range, 5-15). A totherapy delivery in DIBH compared with free breathing with pediatric patients, has been initiated. The current air pollution by SO2 due to anthropogenic pressure in Poland was assessed based on sulfur concentrations in pine needles (Pinus sylvestris L.). On 308 monitoring sample plots located in pine stands distributed across Poland, measurements were conducted in mineral soil layers (0-10 cm, 10-40 cm, 40-100 cm) and in the soil organic layer (+5-0 cm). Samples of Scots pine foliage (current-year needles) were then collected, and the sulfur concentration in these needles was determined. Based on these data, a map of the spatial variability of sulfur concentrations in pine needles was drawn. The mean sulfur concentration in the pine needles was 854.8 mg kg-1 in dry mass. Higher SO2 emissions were noted in regions influenced by industry, such as the Upper Silesia and regions under strong urban pressure. Sulfur concentrations in Scots pine needles were related to the stands' degrees of defoliation. A comparison of the current sulfur concentrations in pine needles from biomonitoring in 2015-2016 with those from previous biomonitoring (in 1983-1985, by Dmuchowski and Bytnerowicz (1995) showed that air quality has improved and SO2 emissions have decreased. Monitoring studies have quantified microscopic plastic debris, so-called microplastics, in freshwater systems, including banks, surface waters and sediments. However, there is a lack of knowledge of freshwater and terrestrial environments. When microplastics are released in freshwater environments, they will be transported and will not remain stationary. Moreover, their transport from sink to source (land-based to river systems) may depend on several factors such as weather conditions and river hydrology. The present study aims to investigate the abundance and composition of microplastics in the most important river of Apulia Region (Southeast Italy) evaluating the main drivers and possible input sources of microplastic debris. The following work is the first study showing an Italian river context. For this research five sampling campaigns have been conducted west of the Ofanto river mouth. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine predictors and outcomes associated with spinal cord ischemia (SCI) after elective fenestrated or branched endovascular aneurysm repair (F/BEVAR) of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA), abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), or aortic dissection. Our study extends the known distribution of this rare muscular dystrophy and presents the first detailed clinical and genetic characterizations of LGMD R7 cases from the Chinese population. Our work expands the mutation spectrum known for LGMD R7 and emphasizes the need for clinicians to consider TCAP mutations when evaluating patients with symptoms of limb girdle muscular dystrophy. Forty rhizobial strains were isolated from Lotus creticus, L. pusillus and Bituminaria bituminosa endemic to Tunisia, and they belonged to the Mesorhizobium and Ensifer genera based on 16S rDNA sequence phylogeny. According to the concatenated recA and glnII sequence-based phylogeny, four Bituminaria isolates Pb5, Pb12, Pb8 and Pb17 formed a monophyletic group with Mesorhizobium chacoense ICMP14587T, whereas four other strains Pb1, Pb6, Pb13 and Pb15 formed two separate lineages within the Ensifer genus. Among the L. pusillus strains, Lpus9 and Lpus10 showed a 96% identical nucleotide with Ensifer meliloti CCBAU83493T; whereas six other strains could belong to previously undescribed Mesorhizobium and Ensifer species. For L. creticus strains, Lcus37, Lcus39 and Lcus44 showed 98% sequence identity with Ensifer aridi JNVU TP6, and Lcus42 shared a 96% identical nucleotide with Ensifer meliloti CCBAU83493T; whereas another four strains were divergent from all the described Ensifer and Mesorhizobium species. The analysis of the nodC gene-based phylogeny identified four symbiovar groups; Mesorhizobium sp. sv. anthyllidis (Lpus3 and Lpus11 from L. pusillus, Lcus43 from L. creticus), Ensifer medicae sv. meliloti (four strains from L. creticus and two strains from L. pusillus), E. meliloti sv. meliloti (four from L. creticus, four from L. pusillus and four from B. bituminosa). In addition, four B. bituminosa strains (Pb5, Pb8, Pb12, and Pb17) displayed a distinctive nodC sequence distant from those of other symbiovars described to date. According to their symbiotic gene sequences and host range, the B. bituminosa symbionts (Pb5, Pb8, Pb12 and Pb17) would represent a new symbiovar of M. chacoense for which sv. psoraleae is proposed. PURPOSE Radiation therapy delivery during deep inspiration breath-hold (DIBH) reduces the irradiation of the heart and lungs and is therefore recommended for adults with mediastinal lymphoma. However, no studies have addressed the use of DIBH in children. No children received radiation therapy. The children were placed in a potential radiation therapy position. The DIBH was voluntary and monitored using an optical surface system providing visual feedback. Children who performed 3 stable DIBHs of 20 seconds each and remained motionless were deemed DIBH compliant. Compliance, equipment suitability, and coaching were further assessed in a semistructured interview. RESULTS We included 33 children (18 healthy and 15 hospitalized children with cancer) with a mean age of 8.5 years (range, 5-15). The current air pollution by SO2 due to anthropogenic pressure in Poland was assessed based on sulfur concentrations in pine needles (Pinus sylvestris L.). On 308 monitoring sample plots located in pine stands distributed across Poland, measurements were conducted in mineral soil layers (0-10 cm, 10-40 cm, 40-100 cm) and in the soil organic layer (+5-0 cm). Samples of Scots pine foliage (current-year needles) were then collected, and the sulfur concentration in these needles was determined. Based on these data, a map of the spatial variability of sulfur concentrations in pine needles was drawn. The mean sulfur concentration in the pine needles was 854.8 mg kg-1 in dry mass. Higher SO2 emissions were noted in regions influenced by industry, such as the Upper Silesia and regions under strong urban pressure. Sulfur concentrations in Scots pine needles were related to the stands' degrees of defoliation. A comparison of the current sulfur concentrations in pine needles from biomonitoring in 2015-2016 with those from previous biomonitoring (in 1983-1985, by Dmuchowski and Bytnerowicz (1995) showed that air quality has improved and SO2 emissions have decreased. Monitoring studies have quantified microscopic plastic debris, so-called microplastics, in freshwater systems, including banks, surface waters and sediments. However, there is a lack of knowledge of freshwater and terrestrial environments. When microplastics are released in freshwater environments, they will be transported and will not remain stationary. Moreover, their transport from sink to source (land-based to river systems) may depend on several factors such as weather conditions and river hydrology. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to compare the performance of an in-house CIM (iCIM) modification with the CIM and mCIM for the detection of carbapenemase production in 149 well characterised isolates (70 carbapenemase producers and 79 non-carbapenemase producers). METHODS Isolates were tested using the CIM, mCIM and iCIM procedures. The gold standard was genotypic characterisation by PCR. RESULTS For Acinetobacter baumannii, the sensitivity was low (10%) for the mCIM, 70% for the CIM but was 100% for the iCIM, with a specificity of 100% for all three. For Enterobacterales, the sensitivity of all three tests was 100% for Ambler class A and B β-lactamases, while the iCIM also had a sensitivity of 100% for class D β lactamases. The sensitivity in Enterobacterales was highest for the iCIM at 100% (CIM 98.2%, mCIM 96.2%). The specificity was 100% for the mCIM and 98% for the CIM and iCIM. For Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the sensitivity of the CIM (100%) was higher than the iCIM (85.7%) and the mCIM (71.4%). iCIM exhibited excellent sensitivity (100%) and specificity (98%) for carbapenemase detection in Enterobacterales and was able to detect two OXA-232 producers that the mCIM did not detect and an OXA-181 producer that the CIM did not detect. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, iCIM performed better than the CIM and mCIM for carbapenemase detection in A. baumannii and Enterobacterales, however the CIM achieved the highest sensitivity for carbapenemase detection in P. aeruginosa suggesting that different CIM variations should be utilised depending on the organism type. In vertebrates, prolactin and corticosterone are two important hormones that regulate parental investment because they stimulate parental care and mobilize energy, respectively. Further, concentrations of both hormones change in response to disturbances. One of the most important parental care behaviors in birds is incubation, since small changes in egg temperature have large effects on offspring. We investigated how prolactin and corticosterone may mediate parental incubation constancy (i.e., the daily amount of time spent incubating eggs) and regulation of egg temperature. We collected blood samples from female wood ducks (Aix sponsa) near the start and end of the incubation period to measure baseline and stress-induced (30 min after capture and restraint) hormone concentrations. We also quantified incubation constancy and egg temperature using artificial egg temperature loggers. As expected, prolactin decreased and corticosterone increased after 30 min of capture and restraint. Corticosterone concentrations (baseline and stress-induced) were negatively related to body mass, but were not related to incubation constancy. In contrast, prolactin concentrations (baseline and stress-induced) were higher at the end than the start of the incubation period, and stress-induced prolactin concentrations were positively related to incubation constancy following a nest disturbance (i.e., capture). Further, prolactin (baseline and stress-induced) concentrations were positively related to egg temperatures, but only after the disturbance. These results suggest that prolactin may be associated with the regulation of parental incubation constancy and resulting heat-transfer after a disturbance, which may ultimately affect offspring development. Serum collected across the lifespan of four managed rhino species black (Diceros bicornis, n = 16), white (Ceratotherium simum simum, n = 19), greater one-horned (GOH, Rhinoceros unicornis, n = 11) and Sumatran (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis, n = 6) were validated and analyzed in an anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) enzyme- linked immunoassay. Concentrations of AMH were examined over time, between sexes and throughout different reproductive states which included n = 3 female white rhinos immunocontracepted with porcine zona pellucida (pZP). Across species, males produced higher AMH concentrations compared to females. Among males, AMH concentrations varied by species aside from comparable values secreted between black and white rhinos. The GOH and Sumatran rhino secreted the highest and lowest male AMH concentrations, respectively. However, within each species, AMH concentrations were similar across male age categories. Preliminary insight into male AMH changes from birth to sexual maturity suggest its potential as a marker for onset of testicular maturation. Myeloid-Derived sSuppressor Cells (MDSCs) are immature myeloid cells that suppress the inflammatory response, a phenomenon related to the resolution or recovery of the clinical symptoms associated with experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), the most common model for MS. Here, we establish the severity index as a new parameter for the clinical assessment in EAE. It is derived from the relationship between the maximal clinical score and the time elapsed since disease onset. Moreover, we relate this new index with several histopathological hallmarks in EAE and with the peripheral content of MDSCs. Based on this new parameter, we show that the splenic MDSC content is related to the evolution of the clinical course of EAE, ranging from mild to severe.

Multivariable survival models adjusted for sociodemographic variables, Charlson comorbidity index, admission diagnostic category, and number of ICU and non-ICU exposures. ICU cohort had a 14.5% (95% CI, 14.0-15.0) and 42.7% (95% CI, 42.0-43.5) age- and sex-standardized incidence of any diagnosed mental disorder at 1 and 5 years post-ICU exposure, respectively. Our objective was to verify the feasibility of nulliparous uterine graft transplantation. Methods The Czech Uterus Transplant Trial (registered under ClinicalTrials.gov, identifier NCT03277430) is a two-arm trial comparing the efficacy of deceased-donor vs. live-donor uterus transplant (10 patients in both arms). A 25-year-old patient suffering from inborn absolute uterine factor infertility underwent a deceased-donor uterus transplant. The donor was a 20-year-old nulliparous brain-dead donor. Results The transplant procedure was uneventful. The posttransplant period was complicated by (i) recurrent episodes of acute cellular rejection, (ii) neutropenia necessitating the administration of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, (iii) vaginal anastomotic stenosis treated with the insertion of a self-expanding stent, (iv) the concurrence of Clostridium difficile colitis and acute appendicitis, and (v) temporary renal function impairment of a combined aetiology. Two years after the uterus transplantation, after the fourth embryo transfer, the patient became pregnant. Apart from gestational diabetes mellitus, the pregnancy was uneventful. Due to preterm contractions, delivery was achieved via caesarean section at gestational age 34 + 6. The postoperative course was uneventful for both the mother and the newborn. Conclusions Herein, we report the first live birth after a deceased-donor uterus transplantation in Europe. This report provides a proof of concept that nulliparous uteri may present a suitable source of uterine grafts for uterus transplantation. The aim of the current review is to evaluate the recent literature on the added value of aNRP when compared to local standard perfusion technique. Methods The PRISMA guideline for systematic reviews was used and relevant literature databases were searched. Primary outcomes were organ utilization rate and patient- and graft survival after 1 year. Secondary outcomes included delayed graft function, primary nonfunction, serum creatinine and biliary complications. Results A total of 24 articles were included in this review. The technique is unanimously reported to be feasible and safe, but the available studies are characterized by considerable heterogeneity and bias. Conclusion Uniform reported outcome measures are needed to draw more definitive conclusions on transplant outcomes and organ utilization. A 25-year-old patient suffering from inborn absolute uterine factor infertility underwent a deceased-donor uterus transplant. The donor was a 20-year-old nulliparous brain-dead donor. Results The transplant procedure was uneventful. The posttransplant period was complicated by (i) recurrent episodes of acute cellular rejection, (ii) neutropenia necessitating the administration of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, (iii) vaginal anastomotic stenosis treated with the insertion of a self-expanding stent, (iv) the concurrence of Clostridium difficile colitis and acute appendicitis, and (v) temporary renal function impairment of a combined aetiology. Two years after the uterus transplantation, after the fourth embryo transfer, the patient became pregnant. Apart from gestational diabetes mellitus, the pregnancy was uneventful. Due to preterm contractions, delivery was achieved via caesarean section at gestational age 34 + 6. The postoperative course was uneventful for both the mother and the newborn. Conclusions Herein, we report the first live birth after a deceased-donor uterus transplantation in Europe. This report provides a proof of concept that nulliparous uteri may present a suitable source of uterine grafts for uterus transplantation. A miniature laser-induced fluorescence (mLIF) detector utilizing a novel spherical dichroic reflector (SDR), an unconventional long working distance high magnification objective, an uncommon broadband emission-matched excitation filter pair, and a silicon-based photodiode detector assembly instead of a photomultiplier tube was developed and evaluated. The detection cell was placed at the spherical center of the SDR instead of the regular focus, yielding a 1.8× signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) improvement. Different from previous works, the use of a 40× objective with a long working distance of 5.38 mm and a broadband BP 527-70 nm emission filter with matched BP 450-30 nm excitation filter improved SNR to 4.6× and 1.9×, respectively. By flow injection analysis (FIA) evaluation, the limit of detection (LOD; 3σ method) for fluorescein sodium was 1.5 × 10-13 M or 8.9 fluorescein molecules in 98 pL detection volume, which was the lowest level of LIFs evaluated by FIA mode. We loaded high-εr HCs including manganese dioxide (MnO2), activated carbon, zinc oxide (ZnO), copper oxide (CuO), and barium titanate (BaTiO3) on polyurethane foams using a fast and large-scale roll-to-roll gel squeezing method. Based on the experimental results, when HCs had a εr larger than 5.1, an increased εr did not benefit electrostatic filtration efficiency for aerosol particles ****, but resulted in a larger net ozone production. Combination of these biomarkers might improve the diagnostic efficiency of candidemia when compared with bacteremia. Insects have been proposed as new source of proteins to meet the growing demand connected to the increasing world population. In the EU the inclusion of insect proteins in feed and food is strictly regulated. Hence, analytical methods able to discriminate and identify different insect species in food and feed are a necessity. In this work, a peptidomic approach was applied to determine peptide biomarkers for two edible insect species lesser mealworm and black soldier fly. Three species specific peptide biomarkers were identified using LC-MS/MS. The two insects were mixed with fish standard feed at different concentrations, to evaluate the feasibility of their use as markers in complex matrices. The detection of marker peptides was confirmed down to 1% insect amount. The data here reported constitutes the first proof of concept for the potential application of the peptide marker approach for the identification and quantification of insect ingredients. It is derived from the secondary metabolite of plants with an analogous biosynthetic pathway to other flavonoids. Due to its unique biological properties over other flavonoids, tricin has been linked to numerous health benefits for human nutrition. In recent years, tricin has been demonstrated to have excellent pharmacological bioactivities and has been proposed as a safe candidate for cancer chemoprevention. For throwing light on the structure-activity relationship of tricin monomer and its potential clinical application, the natural occurrence, physicochemical characteristics, bio/chemosynthesis, isolation and purification, biological properties involved metabolism in vitro and in vivo of tricin as well as its toxicology and bioavailability are critically reviewed, which aims at greatly moving forward the value-added applications of this natural bioactive material on food, human nutrition, and pharmacology. The removal of organophosphorus pesticides residues from wastewater of fruits and vegetables processing as well as other agricultural processes by a low-cost, environment-friendly, and efficient strategy is necessary. In this study, rice bran protein (RBP) was cross-linked with ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN). The results showed that the cross-linking process generated new functional groups and significantly enhanced the chemical reactivity and adsorption capacity of RBP. The RBPC showed rough and porous surface structure compared with smooth surface structure for RBP. In addition, greatest adsorption capacity of 193.0 mg/g and omethoate removal efficiency of 72.1% was achieved, and the results fitted well with Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second order models. Moreover, Omethoate (5 mg/L) removal efficiency maintained over 60% after 5 cycles of RBPC usage. Therefore, the obtained RBPC complex can be suggested as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of pesticide residues from wastewater. By using the desirability function, the optimal framework of the mobile phase was obtained at volume ratio of 83103.53.5, respectively, for SDS (0.09 mol L-1), butanol, NADES, and GAC. Moreover, the curvature and effect plots were applied for evaluating the robustness of the procedure. At the optimal conditions, the drugs were excellently separated within a total analysis time of 12 min when the flow rate of the mobile phase was 1 mL min-1. To certify the performance of the developed procedure, the Food and Drug Administration guidelines for bioanalytical analysis have been implemented. The designed MLC system was successfully utilized for the quantification of the drugs in urine and plasma samples. This study was to develop a reliable and simple high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) to detect paeoniflorin, geniposide, saikosaponin b2, liquiritin, paeonol and atractylenolide Ⅲ in beagle plasma and to study pharmacokinetic of paeoniflorin and geniposide after single-dose administration of Danzhi Xiaoyao Pill (DZXY). Chromatographic separation was performed using an Agilent C18 column, and multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode was used. A gradient elution procedure was used with solvent A (acetonitrile) and solvent B (0.1 % formic acid-water) as mobile phases. The elution procedure was as follows 85 % B-30 % B (0-7 min) and 30 % B-30 % B (7.1-8 min). The flow rate was 0.3 mL/min. The column temperature was 40 ℃, and the injection volume was 10 μL. The main analytical parameters of paeoniflorin, geniposide, saikosaponin b2, liquiritin, paeonol and atractylenolide Ⅲ were m/z 525→449, m/z 433→224, m/z 780→617, m/z 417→254, m/z 167→43 and m/z 249→231, respectively.
