In addition to the low toxicity, easy functionalization, resistance to photobleaching, and sensitivity to changes in surrounding medium of gold, the enhanced surface-to-volume ratio and tunable SPR of HGNs make them highly attractive for different applications in the fields of sensing, therapy, and theranostics. In this article, we review recent progress on the synthesis and structural control of HGNs and applications of their SPR properties in biomedical sensing and theranostics. Diagnosis delay in children and adolescents with cancer is a public health problem in Peru that leads to high rates of advanced disease and mortality. We aimed to assess the implementation feasibility and potential utility of ONCOpeds®, a mobile application that provides consultations with pediatric oncologists, in reducing the latency to diagnosis (LD) and referral time (RT) among children and adolescents in Peru diagnosed with cancer.
A prospective pilot study was conducted in the region of Callao between November 2017 and April 2018. Primary and secondary care providers were trained on the use of ONCOpeds in five educational sessions. Patients younger than 18 years who resided in Callao and were diagnosed with cancer at four pediatric cancer units in Lima were analyzed by referral type ONCOpeds facilitated or conventional.
ONCOpeds was successfully installed in the smartphones of 78 primary and secondary care providers of Callao. During the study period, 23 new cases of cancer in children and adolescents from the region were diagnosed. Ten patients received ONCOpeds-facilitated referrals and 13 received conventional referrals. The RT decreased among those who received ONCOpeds-facilitated referrals by 66% (P=0.02); however, the LD did not significantly decrease with the use of ONCOpeds.
The implementation of ONCOpeds was found to be feasible in this pilot study, having a potential utility in improving early diagnosis and referral in children and adolescents newly diagnosed with cancer. Directions for future research include multicenter studies with a larger population to further test the application's effectiveness.

Older age, being overweight/obese, and lack of recent contact with medical personnel were independently associated with decreased utilization of Pap smear among female Rb survivors. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy revealed a protruding mass in the left upper lobar bronchus; based on the bronchoscopic biopsy findings, a primary solitary endobronchial plasmacytoma was diagnosed. After radiation therapy the patient was well and 6 months after treatment showed no evidence of disease recurrence. As an economically important poultry pathogen, avian paramyxovirus serotype 4 (APMV-4) frequently reported and isolated from domestic and wild birds particularly waterfowls worldwide. However, evolutionary dynamics of APMV-4 based on genomic characteristics is lacking. In this study, APMV-4 strain designated JX-G13 was isolated from oropharyngeal and cloacal swab samples of wild birds in China. Phylogenetic analysis revealed APMV-4 strains were divided into four genetic genotypes and China isolates were mainly clustered into Genotype I. The MCMC tree indicated that APMV-4 diverged about 104 years ago with the evolutionary rate of 1.2927 × 10-3 substitutions/site/year. BSP analysis suggested that the effective population size of APMV-4 exhibited a steady state and decreased slowly after 2013. The F gene of APMV-4 was considered relatively conserved among isolates based on nucleotide diversity analysis. Although the F gene was under purifying selection, two positions (5 and 21) located in 3'-UTR were subject to positive selection. Our study firstly presented the evolutionary assessments on the genetic diversity of circulating APMV-4 from wild birds and domestic poultry.Salivary secretions play critical roles in interactions among insects, insect-vectored pathogens, and host plants. The Asian citrus psyllid Diaphorina citri is a sap-sucking Hemipteran that serves as a vector for Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus, the causal agent of citrus greening disease ("Huanglongbing" or HLB). D. citri continuously injects saliva into host plants using specialized stylets so as to feed and transmit the HLB pathogen. Knowledge on the composition and function of salivary proteins of this pest is very limited. In this study, proteomic and transcriptomic approaches were adopted to characterize the protein composition of the saliva and salivary glands in D. citri. A total of 246 and 483 proteins were identified in saliva and dissected salivary glands, respectively, via LC-MS/MS analyses. Comparative analyses of the identified proteins were performed between D. citri and other reported Hemipteran insect species. Transcription levels of the genes coding for the identified proteins were determined via RNA-sequencing among different tissues including salivary glands and other digestive tissues. Identification of putative effectors that are expressed exclusively or abundantly in salivary glands provides the foundation for future functional studies towards the understanding of their roles in interactions among D. citri, HLB pathogen, and their citrus host. BIOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE This is a systematic analysis on proteins in saliva and dissected salivary glands. A high percentage of novel proteins have been identified due to the large amounts of samples collected. This report gives a more comprehensive repertoire of potential effector proteins that may be possibly involved in modulating host defense, altering nutrient metabolism, and facilitating Ca. L. asiaticus transmission.Honey adulteration is a common practice that deceives consumers and devalues the unique curative and food properties of honey. For marketing, each honey must satisfy an internationally valid Codex standard. One of the quality parameters is diastase/amylase activity, which, if lowered, may be compensated for by the addition of foreign amylases. However, the estimation of enzyme activity does not enable identification of artificially added amylases. 45 honey samples were analyzed using label-free nanoLC-MS/MS proteomics. Four honeys were found to contain the foreign amylases from Aspergillus niger, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and/or Bacillus licheniformis. This result was confirmed via proof of specificity at multiple levels. Furthermore, we identified a series of plant-related protein groups. Despite plant-related proteins constituting a significant portion of honey proteins, they were minor components compared to the major honey bee-derived proteins. Bioinformatic analysis also provided evidence for aphid and rst time specifically identify foreign amylases in honey. However, this study provided new information on other non-honey bee proteins in honey. Thus, this study is also of importance due to its identification of plant and aphid proteins and catalase-related proteins. This study provides a clue explaining the controversial presence of catalase in honey, since catalases can be identified and their origin determined via proteomics.In the study on fermented acid rice soup (rice-acid) inoculated with L. paracasei H4-11 and K. marxianus L1-1, the concentrations of main flavor components on the third day of fermentation were significantly higher than those on the first day. Transcriptome analysis and proteome analysis based on RNA sequencing and 4D label-free proteomic techniques were combined to provide new insights into the molecular mechanisms of flavor characteristics and antioxidant activity of the two strains during the development of rice-acid. The key up-regulated genes and proteins in L. paracasei and K. marxianus L1-1, which were involved in flavor formation and antioxidant activity in rice-acid development, were different. The KEGG pathways involving the up-regulated genes and proteins in L. paracasei included starch and sucrose metabolism, pyruvate metabolism, amino sugar, and nucleotide sugar metabolism, and glycolysis/guconeogenesis. The KEGG pathways involving the up-regulated genes and proteins in K. marxianus L1-1 mainly included glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, TCA cycle, pyruvate metabolism, and other pathways related to antioxidant capacity. We successfully identified key genes and proteins associated with the metabolism and accumulation of flavor components and antioxidant activity. These findings provide new insights into the molecular mechanisms of flavor formation in co-cultivation with L. paracasei and K. marxianus. SIGNIFICANCE It is anticipated that this study would provide us an insight into the mechanisms of flavor components accumulation and antioxidant activity of acid rice soup in China's minority areas. Unexpectedly, cancer-associated fibroblasts expressed comparable levels of SPARC compared with fibroblasts from normal endometrium. However, co-culture of normal fibroblasts with SPARC-expressing Ishikawa cells resulted in activation of the fibroblasts. Immunodepletion of SPARC did not affect the activation of fibroblasts.
Our data indicated that SPARC activated fibroblasts only in the presence of fibronectin, which was abundantly secreted from SPARC-expressing endometrial cancer cells. These results suggested that a SPARC-fibronectin-mediated activation of fibroblasts might be involved in enhanced mobility and invasion of cancer cells.

The goal of this study is to disclose the clinically significant genomic alterations in the Chinese and Western patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.
A total of 86 Chinese patients were enrolled in this study. A panel of 579 pan-cancer genes was sequenced for the qualified samples from these patients. Driver genes, actionability, and tumor mutational burden were inferred and compared to a cohort of Western patients.
Totally, 36 and 12 driver genes were identified in the Chinese and Western cohorts, respectively. Of them, seven driver genes (IDH1, KRAS, TP53, BAP1, PBRM1, ARID1A, and NRAS) were shared by the two cohorts. Four driver genes (SPTA1, ARID2, TP53, and GATA1) were found significantly correlated with the tumor mutational burden. For both cohorts, half of the patients had actionable mutations. The two cohorts shared the most actionable genes but differed **** in their frequency. Though KRAS mutations were at the first and second actionable rank respectively for the Chinese and Western populations, they were still at a relatively low level of actionable evidence.

Quantitative assessment of vascular density (VD) of retinal and choriocapillaris (CC) in various stages of diabetic retinopathy (DR) using spectral domain optical coherence tomography angiography (SD OCTA).
188 eyes of 97 participants were recruited in this cross-sectional study. The macular OCTA (3x3mm) scan was performed and the computer algorithm assessed VD at the level of superficial capillary plexus (SCP), deep capillary plexus (DCP) and CC.
All measured parameters were decreased in retinal VD at the more extreme stages of DR, with the exception of SCP foveal VD. There was a constant pattern of decrease in VD of CC from normal cases to cases of NDR and NPDR and then a slight increase occurred in the PDR stage but never touching the normal quantities. Age, fasting blood sugar, and years of diabetes mellitus were correlated with reduced VD in different segments. Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was positively correlated with parafoveal VD at SCP and VD of foveal area at CC. VD of all subfields of macular area except foveal DCP VD showed reduced levels in diabetic macular edema (DME) patients compared to those without DME.
The findings of the study endorse retina VD changes as a potential biomarker for DR development before retinopathy becomes clinically evident. It seems that parafoveal VD of SCP and foveal VD of CC are good biomarkers to predict VA in the diabetic patients.

Unexpectedly, cancer-associated fibroblasts expressed comparable levels of SPARC compared with fibroblasts from normal endometrium. However, co-culture of normal fibroblasts with SPARC-expressing Ishikawa cells resulted in activation of the fibroblasts. Immunodepletion of SPARC did not affect the activation of fibroblasts. The goal of this study is to disclose the clinically significant genomic alterations in the Chinese and Western patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. A total of 86 Chinese patients were enrolled in this study. A panel of 579 pan-cancer genes was sequenced for the qualified samples from these patients. Driver genes, actionability, and tumor mutational burden were inferred and compared to a cohort of Western patients. Totally, 36 and 12 driver genes were identified in the Chinese and Western cohorts, respectively. Of them, seven driver genes (IDH1, KRAS, TP53, BAP1, PBRM1, ARID1A, and NRAS) were shared by the two cohorts. Four driver genes (SPTA1, ARID2, TP53, and GATA1) were found significantly correlated with the tumor mutational burden. For both cohorts, half of the patients had actionable mutations. The two cohorts shared the most actionable genes but differed much in their frequency. Though KRAS mutations were at the first and second actionable rank respectively for the Chinese and Western populations, they were still at a relatively low level of actionable evidence. Quantitative assessment of vascular density (VD) of retinal and choriocapillaris (CC) in various stages of diabetic retinopathy (DR) using spectral domain optical coherence tomography angiography (SD OCTA). 188 eyes of 97 participants were recruited in this cross-sectional study. The macular OCTA (3x3mm) scan was performed and the computer algorithm assessed VD at the level of superficial capillary plexus (SCP), deep capillary plexus (DCP) and CC. All measured parameters were decreased in retinal VD at the more extreme stages of DR, with the exception of SCP foveal VD. There was a constant pattern of decrease in VD of CC from normal cases to cases of NDR and NPDR and then a slight increase occurred in the PDR stage but never touching the normal quantities. Age, fasting blood sugar, and years of diabetes mellitus were correlated with reduced VD in different segments. Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was positively correlated with parafoveal VD at SCP and VD of foveal area at CC. VD of all subfields of macular area except foveal DCP VD showed reduced levels in diabetic macular edema (DME) patients compared to those without DME. The findings of the study endorse retina VD changes as a potential biomarker for DR development before retinopathy becomes clinically evident. To predict the structure, function, and behaviour of any cluster of macromolecules, it is necessary to understand the interaction between them and other components through basic principles of chemistry and physics. An important number of macromolecules are present in mixtures with surfactants, where a combination of hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions is responsible for the specific properties of any solution. It has been demonstrated that surfactants can help the formation of helices in some proteins thereby promoting protein structure formation. On the other hand, there is extensive research towards the use of surfactants to solubilize drugs and pharmaceuticals; therefore, it is evident that the interaction between surfactants with macromolecules is important for many applications which includes environmental processes and the pharmaceutical industry. In this review, we describe the properties of different types of surfactants that are relevant for their physicochemical interactions with biological macromolecules, from macromolecules-surfactant complexes to hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions.
Patients with congenital urologic conditions present unique challenges as adults. Herein, we review the literature relevant to the adult reconstructive urologist confronted with complex surgical concerns affecting their patients with a history of hypospadias, spina bifida, and other syndromes affecting the genitourinary tract.
Urethral stricture disease related to hypospadias is complex, but successful urethroplasty and penile curvature correction can be achieved with an anatomically minded approach. Multiple urinary diversion techniques can be considered in a patient-centered approach to bladder management in the adult spina bifida patient, but complications are common and revision surgeries are frequently required. Strong evidence is lacking for most surgical techniques in this population, but experiences reported by pediatric and adult urologists with genitourinary reconstruction training can help foster consensus in decision-making. Urologists trained in genitourinary reconstruction may be uniquely positioned to care for the transitional urology patient as they enter adolescence and adulthood.

Despite strong variation of resistance across geographical settings, there is limited understanding of the underlying drivers. To assess these drivers, we developed a transmission model of cephalosporin- and carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae. The model is parameterized using antibiotic consumption and demographic data from eleven European countries and fitted to the resistance rates for Klebsiella pneumoniae for these settings. The impact of potential drivers of resistance is then assessed in counterfactual analyses. Based on reported consumption data, the model could simultaneously fit the prevalence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing and carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (ESBL and CRK) across eleven European countries over eleven years. The fit could explain the large between-country variability of resistance in terms of consumption patterns and fitted differences in hospital transmission rates. Based on this fit, a counterfactual analysis found that reducing nosocomial transmission and antibiotic consumption in the hospital had the strongest impact on ESBL and CRK prevalence. Antibiotic consumption in the community also affected ESBL prevalence but its relative impact was weaker than inpatient consumption. Finally, we used the model to estimate a moderate fitness cost of CRK and ESBL at the population level. This work highlights the disproportionate role of antibiotic consumption in the hospital and of nosocomial transmission for resistance in gram-negative bacteria at a European level. In addition, targets associated with psoriasis were acquired using multiple disease-related databases. Thereafter, an interaction network between candidate **** targets and the known psoriasis-associated targets was constructed based on the protein-protein interaction (PPI) data, using the STRING database. Then, the topological parameter degree was determined for mining the core targets for **** in the treatment of psoriasis, which also represented the major hubs within the PPI network. In addition, the core networks of targets and ingredients were constructed using Cytoscape software to apply **** in the treatment for psoriasis. These core targets were then analyzed for Gene Ontology biological processes and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment using OmicShare. RESULTS The ingredient-target core network of **** for treating psoriasis was constructed; it contained 52 active ingredients and corresponded to 19 core targets. In addition, based on enrichment analysis, these core targets were majorly enriched for several biological processes (immuno-inflammatory responses, leukocyte differentiation, energy metabolism, angiogenesis, and programmed cell death) together with the relevant pathways (Janus kinase-signal transducer and activator of transcription, toll-like receptors, nuclear factor kappaB, vascular endothelial growth factor, and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor), thus identifying the possible mechanism of action of **** in treating psoriasis. CONCLUSIONS The present network pharmacology study indicated that **** alleviates various pathological factors of psoriasis through multiple compounds, multiple targets, and multiple pathways.
To assess the correlations between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation, personal growth and quality of life with learning environment perceptions, perceived academic rank and burnout among medical students.
Cross-sectional questionnaires were administered to medical students at three medical schools in Israel, Malaysia, and China, at the end of one academic year. Surveys included demographic data, students' perceived academic rank, two learning environment perceptions scales, and scales for personal growth, goal orientation, burnout and quality of life. Comparative analyses were made to determine the significance of relationships between the outcome measures and control variables, using a series of t-tests. Pearson correlation coefficients were used to test the hypothesis.

From the KORA-MRI FF4 cohort study 337 subjects (mean age 55.7 ± 9.1 years; 43% women) underwent a whole-body 3T MRI scan. Cardiac parameters derived from a cine-steady-state free precession sequence using cvi42. MRI-based lung volumes derived semi-automatically using an in-house algorithm. Fasting serum glucose, fasting insulin levels, and HOMA index were calculated in all study subjects. Based on this fit, a counterfactual analysis found that reducing nosocomial transmission and antibiotic consumption in the hospital had the strongest impact on ESBL and CRK prevalence. Antibiotic consumption in the community also affected ESBL prevalence but its relative impact was weaker than inpatient consumption. Finally, we used the model to estimate a moderate fitness cost of CRK and ESBL at the population level. RESULTS The ingredient-target core network of MGCM for treating psoriasis was constructed; it contained 52 active ingredients and corresponded to 19 core targets. In addition, based on enrichment analysis, these core targets were majorly enriched for several biological processes (immuno-inflammatory responses, leukocyte differentiation, energy metabolism, angiogenesis, and programmed cell death) together with the relevant pathways (Janus kinase-signal transducer and activator of transcription, toll-like receptors, nuclear factor kappaB, vascular endothelial growth factor, and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor), thus identifying the possible mechanism of action of MGCM in treating psoriasis. Provide an updated review of the clinical management and diagnosis of Kawasaki disease with inclusion of potential diagnostic difficulties with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Adjunctive corticosteroid therapy has been shown to reduce the rate of coronary artery dilation in children at high risk for IVIG resistance in multiple Japanese clinical studies (most notably RAISE study group). Additional adjunctive therapies (etanercept, infliximab, cyclosporin) may also provide limited benefit, but data is limited to single studies and subgroups of patients with cardiac abnormalities. The efficacy of other agents (atorvastatin, doxycycline) is currently being investigated. MIS-C is a clinically distinct entity from KD with broad clinical manifestations and multiorgan involvement (cardiac, GI, hematologic, dermatologic, respiratory, renal). MIS-C with Kawasaki manifestations is more commonly seen in children < 5 years of age.

Though its meaning was always ambiguous and continuously evolving, it captured various concerns about the future uses of psychology in warfare and domestic life and the potential for new technologies to control and manipulate human minds. Recent scholarship on what historians have called the 'Cold War brainwashing scare' has tended to treat brainwashing as a Cold War paranoia or fantasy that not only was never to be, but was never really supported by scientific research. Drawing on recent scholarship and my own research, this paper examines some of the interactions between experts and popular discourses on brainwashing. For many experts, the Cold War brainwashing scare offered an opportunity to engage the public with contemporary psychological theory and research. But it was by no means a discussion over which they had complete control. It will be argued that the popular debate about brainwashing was not only a question of dealing with scientific 'facts', but existed in a more diverse imaginary concerned as **** with present realities, as it was with future possibilities. **** in the same way that stories about artificial intelligence are reported today, discussions of techniques of brainwashing were often accompanied by speculation both wild and grounded about how new technology may be used in the future and by whom. This paper covers three examples Korean War military psychiatrists, the popular theories of William Sargant and the field of experimental research known broadly as sensory deprivation. It concludes with some observations about current concerns about psychological manipulation in the digital age and the role psychology expertise plays in navigating these concerns.
Kit lot change in clinical biochemistry labs leads to variations in patient results. This study planned to identify variations during 60 reagent lot changes in our laboratory during the period from June 2018 to May 2019.
A statistical analysis was performed to identify the difference between patient samples results variations and QC results. The long term drift was analyzed using a regression test.
There was a significant difference between the patient and QC results in 16.7% of reagent lot changes. Moreover, the extent of variation in QC results was 3.3%. No long-term drift was seen in three analytes which were studied using regression analysis.
Our results showed that, during reagent kit lot change, along with QC material, the patient samples should also be run in order to identify the variation. However, this practice is presently ignored by most of the laboratories. There was no accumulated effect in our laboratory due to reagent kit lot change.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) affects human health worldwide. Our objective was to explore the correlation between urinary retinol-binding protein (URBP) and NAFLD.
This cross-sectional study included 445 NAFLD patients and 911 healthy controls. The URBP level and other parameters were measured.
The URBP level (expressed by the RBP/creatinine ratio) was higher in the NAFLD patients compared with the non-NAFLD patients. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a frequently encountered disorder. This study aimed to identify polymorphisms in ADRB2 in Saudi PCOS development and to study its influence on lipids, hormones, and anthropometric parameters.
Saudi females (100) suffering from PCOS and healthy controls (100) were investigated. The estimation of cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C), plasma glucose, leptin Insulin, and ghrelin were carried out. The DNA was extracted, and

The waist, W/H ratio, lipids, glucose, and insulin were significantly higher in the obese PCOS compared to the normal weight group. The leptin and ghrelin were not different. Two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs1042713 (Arg16Gly; A>G) and rs1042714 (Gln27Glu; C>G) were identified. The genotype and allele frequency of rs1042713 did not differ in the total PCOS and normal weight, and obese PCOS compare to the controls. However, rs1042714 was significantly associated with PCOS development, where the minor G allele was protective against PCOS development.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) affects human health worldwide. Our objective was to explore the correlation between urinary retinol-binding protein (URBP) and NAFLD. This cross-sectional study included 445 NAFLD patients and 911 healthy controls. The URBP level and other parameters were measured. The URBP level (expressed by the RBP/creatinine ratio) was higher in the NAFLD patients compared with the non-NAFLD patients. Provide an updated review of the clinical management and diagnosis of Kawasaki disease with inclusion of potential diagnostic difficulties with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Adjunctive corticosteroid therapy has been shown to reduce the rate of coronary artery dilation in children at high risk for IVIG resistance in multiple Japanese clinical studies (most notably RAISE study group). Additional adjunctive therapies (etanercept, infliximab, cyclosporin) may also provide limited benefit, but data is limited to single studies and subgroups of patients with cardiac abnormalities. The efficacy of other agents (atorvastatin, doxycycline) is currently being investigated. MIS-C is a clinically distinct entity from KD with broad clinical manifestations and multiorgan involvement (cardiac, GI, hematologic, dermatologic, respiratory, renal). MIS-C with Kawasaki manifestations is more commonly seen in children < 5 years of age.
The 2017 American Heart KD to include both pulse-dose IVMP and longer course of prednisolone with an oral taper. A significant proportion of children diagnosed with MIS-C, a post-infectious syndrome of SARS-CoV-2 infection, meet criteria for Kawasaki disease. Further investigation is warranted to further delineate these conditions and optimize treatment of these conditions given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.In 1950, a new word 'brainwashing' entered the English language. Though its meaning was always ambiguous and continuously evolving, it captured various concerns about the future uses of psychology in warfare and domestic life and the potential for new technologies to control and manipulate human minds. Recent scholarship on what historians have called the 'Cold War brainwashing scare' has tended to treat brainwashing as a Cold War paranoia or fantasy that not only was never to be, but was never really supported by scientific research. Drawing on recent scholarship and my own research, this paper examines some of the interactions between experts and popular discourses on brainwashing. For many experts, the Cold War brainwashing scare offered an opportunity to engage the public with contemporary psychological theory and research. But it was by no means a discussion over which they had complete control. It will be argued that the popular debate about brainwashing was not only a question of dealing with scientific 'facts', but existed in a more diverse imaginary concerned as **** with present realities, as it was with future possibilities. **** in the same way that stories about artificial intelligence are reported today, discussions of techniques of brainwashing were often accompanied by speculation both wild and grounded about how new technology may be used in the future and by whom. This paper covers three examples Korean War military psychiatrists, the popular theories of William Sargant and the field of experimental research known broadly as sensory deprivation. It concludes with some observations about current concerns about psychological manipulation in the digital age and the role psychology expertise plays in navigating these concerns.
Kit lot change in clinical biochemistry labs leads to variations in patient results. This study planned to identify variations during 60 reagent lot changes in our laboratory during the period from June 2018 to May 2019.
A statistical analysis was performed to identify the difference between patient samples results variations and QC results. The long term drift was analyzed using a regression test.
There was a significant difference between the patient and QC results in 16.7% of reagent lot changes. Moreover, the extent of variation in QC results was 3.3%. No long-term drift was seen in three analytes which were studied using regression analysis.
Our results showed that, during reagent kit lot change, along with QC material, the patient samples should also be run in order to identify the variation. However, this practice is presently ignored by most of the laboratories. There was no accumulated effect in our laboratory due to reagent kit lot change.

Two strains isolated from soil samples were designated as YH-JAE5T and YH-JAE2. The isolates were facultative anaerobic, Gram-stain-variable, motile, rod-shaped bacteria. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the isolates belonged to the genus Paenibacillus, but the 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities were less then 98 % when compared with other species within the genus. Analysis of rpoB gene revealed the isolates formed a sub-cluster with P. chibensis. The only menaquinone identified was MK-7. The two isolates contained meso-diaminopimelic acid within their cell wall peptidoglycan. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phospholipid, aminophospholipids, and lipids. The major fatty acids were C15  0 anteiso and C15  0 iso. The average nucleotide identity, average amino acid identity, and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between isolate YH-JAE5T and the most closely related reference strain (Paenibacillus chibensis KCTC 3758T) were 81.7, 84.8 and 23.4 %, respectively. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 47.4 mol%. Thus, the polyphasic data revealed that YH-JAE2 (=KCTC 43239=JCM 34435) and YH-JAE5T (=KCTC 43059=JCM 33533) represent a new species. Co-expression of HBe protein improved cell viability significantly in both WT and MT virus constructs, indicating an important role of HBe in protecting cells. RNA sequencing analysis carried out at 12 and 72 h post-transfection with WT virus construct showed enrichment of innate/adaptive immune response-activating signal transduction, cell survival and amino acid/nucleic acid biosynthetic pathways at 12 and 72 h. By contrast, MT virus construct showed enrichment in host defence pathways and some biosynthetic pathways at the early time point (12 h), and inflammatory response, secretary granule, regulation of membrane potential and stress response regulatory pathways at the late time point (72 h). There was a significant down-regulation of genes involved in endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondrial functions and metabolism with MT construct and this possibly led to induction of apoptosis in cells. The principal cellular fatty acids were summed feature 8 (C18  1 ω7c and/or C18  1 ω6c), summed feature 3 (iso-C15   0 2-OH and/or C16   1 ω7c), C16  0 and C14  0 2-OH. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine, phosphatidyldimethylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, sphingoglycolipid and phosphoglycolipid. The DNA G+C content was 63.1 %. The average nucleotide identity and in silico DNA-DNA hybridization relatedness values between strain AR-3-1T and its most closely related genus members were ≤89.6 and 39.6 %, respectively. The genome was 5 162 327 bp long, with 83 scaffolds and 4824 protein-coding genes. The genome showed six putative biosynthetic gene clusters responsible for various secondary metabolites. Based on this polyphasic study, strain AR-3-1T represents a novel species within the genus Sphingobium, for which the name Sphingobium psychrophilum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is AR-3-1T (=KACC 21613T=NBRC 114604T).
Mass shootings account for a small fraction of annual worldwide murders, yet disproportionately affect society and influence policy. Evidence suggesting a link between mass shootings and severe mental illness (i.e. involving psychosis) is often misrepresented, generating stigma. Thus, the actual prevalence constitutes a key public health concern.
We examined global personal-cause mass murders from 1900 to 2019, amassed by review of 14 785 murders publicly described in English in print or online, and collected information regarding perpetrator, demographics, legal history, drug use and alcohol misuse, and history of symptoms of psychiatric or neurologic illness using standardized methods. We distinguished whether firearms were or were not used, and, if so, the type (non-automatic v. semi- or fully-automatic).
We identified 1315 mass murders, 65% of which involved firearms. Lifetime psychotic symptoms were noted among 11% of perpetrators, consistent with previous reports, including 18% of mass murderers wsychotic psychopathology might yield more substantial results.
Trans rectal ultrasound guided prostate biopsy with periprostatic nerve block (PPNB) is performed following probe insertion and manipulation leaving these initial maneuvers uncovered in terms of pain control. We evaluated whether topical analgesia reduces pain during early stages of the procedure.
Seven group prospective, randomized controlled study groups 1-3 nerve block with 5 ml 1% lidocaine bilaterally plus perianal topical application of 10 ml 5% lidocaine cream. Groups 4-6 as in 1-3 plus digital application of 10 ml 5% lidocaine cream internally on rectal walls. For each approach exposure times were 5 (groups 1 and 4), 10 (groups 2 and 5) and 20 (groups 3 and 6) min, respectively. The control group (7) received PPNB only. Patients filled a 0-10 visual analogue scale (VAS) at five points after probe insertion, during probe manipulation, following PPNB, after prostate biopsies and a global pain estimation.
Two hundred and fifty-two patients were enrolled. Significant differences in VAS between all study groups and controls were observed at the pre-biopsy stages of the procedure.

Based on this polyphasic study, strain AR-3-1T represents a novel species within the genus Sphingobium, for which the name Sphingobium psychrophilum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is AR-3-1T (=KACC 21613T=NBRC 114604T). Mass shootings account for a small fraction of annual worldwide murders, yet disproportionately affect society and influence policy. Evidence suggesting a link between mass shootings and severe mental illness (i.e. involving psychosis) is often misrepresented, generating stigma. Thus, the actual prevalence constitutes a key public health concern. We examined global personal-cause mass murders from 1900 to 2019, amassed by review of 14 785 murders publicly described in English in print or online, and collected information regarding perpetrator, demographics, legal history, drug use and alcohol misuse, and history of symptoms of psychiatric or neurologic illness using standardized methods. We distinguished whether firearms were or were not used, and, if so, the type (non-automatic v. semi- or fully-automatic). We identified 1315 mass murders, 65% of which involved firearms. Lifetime psychotic symptoms were noted among 11% of perpetrators, consistent with previous reports, including 18% of mass murderers wsychotic psychopathology might yield more substantial results. Trans rectal ultrasound guided prostate biopsy with periprostatic nerve block (PPNB) is performed following probe insertion and manipulation leaving these initial maneuvers uncovered in terms of pain control. We evaluated whether topical analgesia reduces pain during early stages of the procedure. Seven group prospective, randomized controlled study groups 1-3 nerve block with 5 ml 1% lidocaine bilaterally plus perianal topical application of 10 ml 5% lidocaine cream. The first step in SPB duplication is the half-bridge to bridge conversion via the antiparallel dimerization of the centrin (Cdc31)-binding protein Sfi1 in anaphase. The bridge, which is anchored to the old SPB on the proximal end, exposes free Sfi1 N-termini (N-Sfi1) at its distal end. These free N-Sfi1 promote in G1 the assembly of the daughter SPB (dSPB) in a yet unclear manner. This study shows that N-Sfi1 including the first three Cdc31 binding sites interacts with the SPB components Spc29 and Spc42, triggering the assembly of the dSPB. Cdc31 binding to N-Sfi1 promotes Spc29 recruitment and is essential for satellite formation. Furthermore, phosphorylation of N-Sfi1 has an inhibitory effect and delays dSPB biogenesis until G1. To determine whether enteral supplementation with fatty acids from birth to 40 weeks' postmenstrual age reduces ROP in extremely preterm infants.
The Mega Donna Mega trial, a randomized clinical trial, was a multicenter study performed at 3 university hospitals in Sweden from December 15, 2016, to December 15, 2019. The screening pediatric ophthalmologists were masked to patient groupings. A total of 209 infants born at less than 28 weeks' gestation were tested for eligibility, and 206 infants were included. Efficacy analyses were performed on as-randomized groups on the intention-to-treat population and on the per-protocol population using as-treated groups. Statistical analyses were performed from February to April 2020.
Infants received either supplementation with an enteral oil providing AA (100 mg/kg/d) and DHA (50 mg/kg/d) (AAificant differences between the AADHA group and the control group in the rates of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (48 of 101 [47.5%] vs 48 of 105 [45.7%]) and of any grade of intraventricular hemorrhage (43 of 101 [42.6%] vs 42 of 105 [40.0%]). In the AADHA group and control group, respectively, sepsis occurred in 42 of 101 infants (41.6%) and 53 of 105 infants (50.5%), serious adverse events occurred in 26 of 101 infants (25.7%) and 26 of 105 infants (24.8%), and 16 of 101 infants (15.8%) and 13 of 106 infants (12.3%) died.
This study found that, compared with standard of care, enteral AADHA supplementation lowered the risk of severe ROP by 50% and showed overall higher serum levels of both AA and DHA. Enteral lipid supplementation with AADHA is a novel preventive strategy to decrease severe ROP in extremely preterm infants.

Substantial genome-wide association study (GWAS) work in Parkinson disease (PD) has led to the discovery of an increasing number of loci shown reliably to be associated with increased risk of disease. Improved understanding of the underlying genes and mechanisms at these loci will be key to understanding the pathogenesis of PD.

There is currently insufficient information available on effective therapies that can be administered to patients with non-small cell cancer (NSCLC) who develop resistance to epidermal growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs). However, sequential treatment via programmed death-1 (PD-1) blockade followed by EGFR-TKI rechallenge is suggested to improve the therapeutic efficacy in such patients.
A total of 75 patients with advanced NSCLC harboring sensitive EGFR mutations treated with afatinib, erlotinib, or gefitinib after EGFR-TKI treatment failure were retrospectively analyzed. Among them, 13 patients were treated with EGFR-TKI rechallenge immediately after the failure of PD-1 blockade therapy (experimental group) and the remaining 62 patients did not receive PD-1 inhibitor therapy before EGFR-TKI rechallenge (control group). Blood samples were collected at two time points; before the initiation of anti-PD-1 therapy and at EGFR-TKI rechallenge.

Specifically, the analysis and quantification of these substances in meat tissues is a challenge for the analytical chemistry research community. This is due to the complexity of the matrix and the low detection limits required by the regulatory agencies. In this sense, a comprehensive review on the development of new sample preparation treatments involving extraction, cleanup, and enrichment steps of antibiotics in meat samples in combination with sensitive and sophisticated determination techniques that have been carry out in the last years is necessary. Therefore, the aim of this work is to summarize the published methodologies for the determination of antibiotics from 2016 until the beginning of the second semester of 2020. The first part of this review includes an introduction about antibiotic families, followed by sample preparation and determination techniques applied to the different families. Finally, a detailed discussion of the current trends and the future possible perspectives in this field are also included.
To compare the clinical outcomes of anterior controllable antedisplacement fusion (ACAF), a new surgical technique, with laminoplasty for the treatment of multilevel severe cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) based on a 2-year follow-up.
Clinical data of 53 patients (21 by ACAF and 32 by laminoplasty) who have accepted surgery for treatment of cervical myelopathy caused by multilevel severe OPLL (occupying rate ≥ 50%) from March 2015 to March 2017 were retrospectively reviewed and compared between ACAF group and laminoplasty group. Operative time, blood loss, and complications of the two groups were recorded. Radiographic parameters were evaluated pre- and postoperatively cervical lordosis on X-ray, space available for the cord (SAC) and the occupying ratio (OR) on computed tomography (CT), and the anteroposterior (AP) diameter of the spinal cord at the narrowest level and the spinal cord curvature on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) 40.9%, P < 0.05), SAC (150.8 vs 110.5 mm
, P < 0.05), AP spinal cord diameter (5.5 vs 4.2 mm, P < 0.05), and cervical lordosis (12.7° vs 4.7°, P < 0.05) were improved more considerably in ACAF group, with significant differences between two groups. Notably, the spinal cord on MRI showed a better curvature in ACAF group.

Clinical data of 53 patients (21 by ACAF and 32 by laminoplasty) who have accepted surgery for treatment of cervical myelopathy caused by multilevel severe OPLL (occupying rate ≥ 50%) from March 2015 to March 2017 were retrospectively reviewed and compared between ACAF group and laminoplasty group. Operative time, blood loss, and complications of the two groups were recorded. Radiographic parameters were evaluated pre- and postoperatively cervical lordosis on X-ray, space available for the cord (SAC) and the occupying ratio (OR) on computed tomography (CT), and the anteroposterior (AP) diameter of the spinal cord at the narrowest level and the spinal cord curvature on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) 40.9%, P < 0.05), SAC (150.8 vs 110.5 mm , P < 0.05), AP spinal cord diameter (5.5 vs 4.2 mm, P < 0.05), and cervical lordosis (12.7° vs 4.7°, P < 0.05) were improved more considerably in ACAF group, with significant differences between two groups. Notably, the spinal cord on MRI showed a better curvature in ACAF group. This study showed that ACAF is considered superior to laminoplasty for the treatment of multilevel severe OPLL as anterior direct decompression and better curvature of the spinal cord led to satisfactory neurologic outcomes and low complication rate.
