The present research will be conducted to systematically evaluate the efficiency and safety of using acupuncture to treat cases of dysphagia after radiation therapy in NPC patients.

    Literature search will include all potential randomized controlled trials using MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, EMBASE, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese BioMedical Literature, and WanFang database from their inception to May, 2021 without language or publication status restrictions, to evaluate the efficiency and safety of using acupuncture to treat dysphagia cases following radiation therapy in NPC patients. A couple of independent authors will select related literature, extract data from studies, and estimate this risk in the bias of the selected study articles. In the instance of contrasting opinions, the outcome is mediated through discussion with a different independent author. The data synthesis and statistical analysis will be completed with the RevMan software (version 5.3).

    Acne vulgaris (AV) is a common dermatologic disease. The morbidity is increasing annually. External application of herbal medicines (EAHM) has been pervasively used in the therapy of AV. EAHM , as the traditional Chinese therapy, is widely applied in clinical trials for AV. The aim of this review is to systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of EAHM in the therapy for AV.

    We will conduct an electronic search of 13 databases from their inception to May, 2020, including PubMed, EMBASE, MEDLINE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, SpringerLink, WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform, Wanfang China database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, Chinese Scientific Journal Database, as well as China's Conference Papers Database and China Dissertation database. Other valid search strategies will also be retrieved to complete this review. All randomized controlled trials in which EAHM was used for the treatment of AV will be adopted. Two researchers will select eligible studies respectively according to a predefined protocol. Methodological quality will be assessed with Cochrane risk of bias by means of RevMan V.5.3.5 software.

    This systematic view will present a high-quality synthesis based on current evidence of EAHM intervention for AV patients.

  • Atherosclerosis (AS) is a chronic pathophysiological process that causes high mortality and morbidity. It has previously been reported that homeobox A9 (HOXA9) may participate in regulation of the cardiovascular system and the pathology of AS by upregulating E-selectin and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1). Thus, inhibiting HOXA9 could promote microcirculation of coronary arteries and could act as a potential therapy for AS treatment. Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into four groups, as follows i) AS; ii) AS + HOXA9 inhibitor; iii) AS + small interfering RNA-HOXA9 and iv) normal control. ELISA was used to measure the levels of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-12, C-C motif chemokine ligand 25 (CCL25), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL). Flow cytometry was employed to detect the content of M1 macrophages. Hematoxylin & eosin (H&E) staining was performed to observe the morphology of the coronary arteries. Oil red O staining was conducted for coronary arteries of AS rats. These findings indicated that HOXA9 inhibitors may have the potential to succeed in the treatment of AS.Myocardial hypertrophy is an independent risk factor of cardiovascular diseases and is closely associated with the incidence of heart failure. In the present study, we hypothesized that difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) could attenuate cardiac hypertrophy through mitochondria-associated membranes (MAM) and autophagy. Cardiac hypertrophy was induced in male rats by intravenous administration of isoproterenol (ISO; 5 mg/kg/day) for 1, 3,7 and 14 days. For DFMO treatment group, rats were given ISO (5 mg/kg/day) for 14 days and 2% DFMO in their water for 4 weeks. The expression of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) mRNA,heart parameters, apoptosis rate, fibrotic area and protein expressions of cleaved caspase3/9, GRP75, Mfn2, CypD and VDAC1 were measured to confirm the development of cardiac hypertrophy, apoptosis and autophagy induced by ISO. ANP mRNA and MAM protein expression levels were assessed by reverse transcription-quantitative PCR and western blotting to evaluate hypertrophy and the effects of DFMO oral administration. The results demonstrated that heart parameters, ANP mRNA levels, fibrotic area and apoptosis rate were significantly increased in the heart tissue for ISO 7 and 14 day groups compared with the control group. Furthermore, treatment with DFMO significantly inhibited these indicators, and DFMO downregulated the MAM signaling pathway and upregulated the autophagy pathway in heart tissue compared with the ISO 14 day group. Overall, all ISO-induced changes analyzed in the present study were attenuated following treatment with DFMO. The potential mechanism of miR-29b and EMT was also investigated. The expression levels of miR-29b, E-cadherin, and α-SMA in PVR epiretinal membranes were measured using quantitative PCR. The expression levels of Akt2, phosphorylated (p)-Akt2, p65, p-p65, and Snail in ARPE-19 cells were assessed using western blotting. The expression levels of miR-29b were positively correlated with E-cadherin mRNA expression, while an inverse correlation was observed between miR-29b and α-SMA mRNA expression in epiretinal membranes of patients with PVR. When miR-29b was transfected into ARPE-19 cells, the expression levels of Akt2, p-Akt2, p-p65 and Snail were downregulated. shRNA-Akt2 inhibited p-p65 and Snail expression, while the NF-κB inhibitor BAY11-7082 reduced Snail expression. DSA positivity was detected in 10 cases (20.8%). One case was positive for HLA class I and HLA class II antibodies, whereas 9 cases were positive for HLA class II antibodies, and the gene loci were HLA-DR and/or DQ. However, its roles in gastric cancer remain unclear. In the present study, the function and molecular mechanisms of PANX1 in gastric cancer were investigated in vitro. Two gastric cancer cell lines exhibiting low and high PANX1 expression (SNU-16 and HCG-27, respectively) were transfected using a PANX1-containing plasmid or PANX1 transcript-targeting short hairpin (sh)RNA. In addition, HCG-27 cells and PANX1-overexpressing SNU-16 cells were subjected to short interfering (si)RNA-mediated aquaporin 5 (AQP5) knockdown. In vitro cell migration (scratch) and transwell invasion assays were performed to evaluate the cell migratory and invasive abilities. Real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR was used to detect transcripts encoding epithelial-mesenchymal transition markers. Immunofluorescence and Western blotting were conducted to quantify corresponding proteins. In SNU-16 cells, PANX1 overexpression induced conversion from round (cobblestone-like) to elongated (spindle-like) morphologies and enhanced the cell migratory and invasive abilities. PANX1 knockdown had the opposite effect in HGC-27 cells. In PANX1-overexpressing SNU-16 cells, expression of SLUG, vimentin, and AQP5 was significantly upregulated, whereas expression of E-cadherin was downregulated. In HGC-27 cells, PANX1 knockdown showed the opposite effect. The accuracy of diagnosing parathyroid tissue was significantly better in the same-day group than in the next-day group. A cut-off value of 0.18 gave the best diagnostic precision, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.95 and 88.7% sensitivity and specificity in the same-day group. When the cut-off value was set to 0.20, the specificity for excluding carcinomatous tissues was 100%. The major haplotypes of all three loci occurred in individuals from both populations. Thus, there were no clear genetic differences between the populations with respect to these three loci. Although the breeding range of the tufted puffin covers the boreal and low Arctic from California to Hokkaido, our results suggest that the species has not genetically diverged within its breeding range.

However, its roles in gastric cancer remain unclear. In the present study, the function and molecular mechanisms of PANX1 in gastric cancer were investigated in vitro. Two gastric cancer cell lines exhibiting low and high PANX1 expression (SNU-16 and HCG-27, respectively) were transfected using a PANX1-containing plasmid or PANX1 transcript-targeting short hairpin (sh)RNA. In addition, HCG-27 cells and PANX1-overexpressing SNU-16 cells were subjected to short interfering (si)RNA-mediated aquaporin 5 (AQP5) knockdown. In vitro cell migration (scratch) and transwell invasion assays were performed to evaluate the cell migratory and invasive abilities. Real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR was used to detect transcripts encoding epithelial-mesenchymal transition markers. Immunofluorescence and Western blotting were conducted to quantify corresponding proteins. In SNU-16 cells, PANX1 overexpression induced conversion from round (cobblestone-like) to elongated (spindle-like) morphologies and enhanced the cell migratory and invasive abilities. PANX1 knockdown had the opposite effect in HGC-27 cells. In PANX1-overexpressing SNU-16 cells, expression of SLUG, vimentin, and AQP5 was significantly upregulated, whereas expression of E-cadherin was downregulated.     Previous studies have demonstrated that excretion of urinary extracellular vesicles (EVs) from different nephron segments differs between kidney stone formers and non-stone formers (NSFs), and could reflect pathogenic mechanisms of urinary stone disease. In this study we quantified selected populations of specific urinary EVs carrying protein markers of immune cells and calcium/phosphorus physiology in calcium oxalate stone formers (CSFs) compared to non-stone formers (NSFs).

    Biobanked urine samples from CSFs (n = 24) undergoing stone removal surgery and age- and sex- matched NSFs (n = 21) were studied. Urinary EVs carrying proteins related to renal calcium/phosphorus physiology (phosphorus transporters (PiT1 and PiT2), Klotho, and fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23); markers associated with EV generation (anoctamin-4 (ANO4) and Huntington interacting protein 1 (HIP1)), and markers shed from activated immune cells were quantified by standardized and published method of digital flow cytometry.

    Urine excrcells and EVs with proteins related to calcium/phosphorus regulation differed between CSFs and NSFs. Further validation of these and other populations of urinary EVs in larger cohort could identify biomarkers that elucidate novel pathogenic mechanisms of calcium stone formation in specific subsets of patients.

    Increasing drought induced by global climate changes is altering the structure and function of grassland ecosystems. However, there is a lack of understanding of how drought affects the trade-off of above- and belowground biomass in desert steppe. We conducted a four-year (2015-2018) drought experiment to examine the responses of community above-and belowground biomass (AGB and BGB) to manipulated drought and natural drought in the early period of growing season (from March to June) in a desert steppe. We compared the associations of drought with species diversity (species richness and density), community-weighted means (CWM) of five traits, and soil factors (soil Water, soil carbon content, and soil nitrogen content) for grass communities. Meanwhile, we used the structural equation modeling (SEM) to elucidate whether drought affects AGB and BGB by altering species diversity, functional traits, or soil factors.

    We found that manipulated drought affected soil water content, but not on soil carbon and nitronstrate that the long-term observation and experiment are necessary to understand the underlyingmechanism of the allocation and trade-off of community above-and belowground biomass.
    These results suggest that species richness and functional traits can modulate the effects of drought on AGB, however natural drought and soil nitrogen determine BGB. Our findings demonstrate that the long-term observation and experiment are necessary to understand the underlying mechanism of the allocation and trade-off of community above-and belowground biomass.
    Abdominal pain and other gastrointestinal symptoms are common presenting features of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) and can overlap with infectious or inflammatory abdominal conditions, making accurate diagnosis challenging.

    We describe the case of a 16-year-old female who presented with clinical symptoms suggestive of appendicitis and an abdominal computed tomography (CT) that revealed features concerning for appendicitis. After laparoscopic appendectomy, histopathology of the appendix demonstrated only mild serosal inflammation and was not consistent with acute appendicitis. Her overall clinical presentation was felt to be consistent with MIS-C and she subsequently improved with immunomodulatory and steroid treatment.

    We note that MIS-C can mimic acute appendicitis. This case highlights MIS-C as a cause of abdominal imaging with features concerning for appendicitis, and MIS-C should be considered in the differential for a patient with appendicitis-like symptoms and a positive COVID-19 IgG. Lab criteria, specifically low-normal white blood cell count and thrombocytopenia, appears to be of high relevance in differing MIS-C from acute appendicitis, even when appendix radiologically is dilated.

  • Clustering the individual response trajectories of behavioral and endocrine responses yielded two multidimensional response types of different adaptive value. Interestingly, these response types were displayed by individuals of all three strains. The response types differed significantly on anxiety and activity related behavioral dimensions but not on corticosterone concentrations. This study empirically confirms that adaptive capacities may differ within 129 cohorts. In addition, it extends this inter-individual variability in behavioral profiles to BALB/c and C57BL/6. For that, we analyze differences on the perception of difficulty, stress, and academic performance between students and teachers in a nursing Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). We analyze the different perceptions in 41 s-year nursing degree students (20.1 ± 2.3 years; 29 females and 12 males) and 21 nursing degree professors (39.1 ± 4.2 years) of the different scenarios that compose the OSCE, that were BP+EKG, venipuncture, CPR, nutritional assessment, respiratory assessment, mobilization, and interprofessional scenario. After the statistical analysis we found that professors presented higher difficulty perceptions of venopunction, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and nutritional evaluation, as well as higher academic performance perception on all scenarios except nutritional evaluation than students. Students showed higher stress perceptions on venopunction, respiratory evaluation, mobility and interprofessional scenarios, as well as higher academic perception on nutritional evaluation than teachers. Professors presented higher difficulty and academic performance perceptions than students, and stress perception varies depending on the OSCE station between professors and students.

    Clustering the individual response trajectories of behavioral and endocrine responses yielded two multidimensional response types of different adaptive value. Interestingly, these response types were displayed by individuals of all three strains. The response types differed significantly on anxiety and activity related behavioral dimensions but not on corticosterone concentrations. This study empirically confirms that adaptive capacities may differ within 129 cohorts. In addition, it extends this inter-individual variability in behavioral profiles to BALB/c and C57BL/6. We analyze the different perceptions in 41 s-year nursing degree students (20.1 ± 2.3 years; 29 females and 12 males) and 21 nursing degree professors (39.1 ± 4.2 years) of the different scenarios that compose the OSCE, that were BP+EKG, venipuncture, CPR, nutritional assessment, respiratory assessment, mobilization, and interprofessional scenario. After the statistical analysis we found that professors presented higher difficulty perceptions of venopunction, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and nutritional evaluation, as well as higher academic performance perception on all scenarios except nutritional evaluation than students. Students showed higher stress perceptions on venopunction, respiratory evaluation, mobility and interprofessional scenarios, as well as higher academic perception on nutritional evaluation than teachers.   • This study aimed to examine how anxiety related to different styles of coping during the COVID-19 pandemic and how these relationships were moderated by the cultural orientations of individualism/collectivism and a person's sense of meaning in life. A sample of 849 participants from Georgia completed an online survey during the final stage of lockdown. To measure the main variables, we used the State Anxiety Inventory, the Horizontal and Vertical Individualism and Collectivism Scale, the Meaning of Life Questionnaire, the COVID-19 Worry Scale, and the Ways of Coping Scale tailored to COVID-19 pandemic. The latter measured rational coping via the subscales of information accessing/processing and action-planning coping, and affective coping - via the subscales of passive-submissive and avoidant coping. Results suggested that anxiety positively predicted both affective coping styles and negatively predicted the action-planning coping style, while COVID-19 worry predicted all coping styles; presence of meaning in life positively predicted both rational coping styles and negatively predicted the avoidant coping style, while search for meaning positively predicted all coping styles; individualism negatively predicted the passive-submissive style and positively predicted the action-planning style, whereas collectivism predicted all coping styles; furthermore, individualism and collectivism moderated the link between anxiety and the passive-submissive coping style, presence of meaning in life moderated the link between anxiety and avoidant coping style, while search for meaning in life moderated the link between anxiety and the action-planning coping style. Overall, the findings enrich the cultural transactional theory of stress and coping, and generate insights for the culture-sensitive approach to the meaning in life. Here, we examined the effects of a 24-session, Cuisenaire rod intervention on a building block for symbolic fraction knowledge, continuous and discrete non-symbolic proportional reasoning, in children who have yet to receive fraction instruction. Participants were 34 second-graders who attended the intervention (intervention group) and 15 children who did not participate in any sessions (control group). As attendance at the intervention sessions was irregular (median = 15.6 sessions, range = 1-24), we specifically examined the effect of the number of sessions completed on their non-symbolic proportional reasoning. Our results showed that children who attended a larger number of sessions increased their ability to compare non-symbolic continuous proportions. However, contrary to our expectations, they also decreased their ability to compare misleading discretized proportions. In contrast, children in the Control group did not show any change in their performance. Apart from major benefits that may come along with such information and communication technologies (e.g., productivity increases, better resource planning, and increased worker safety), they also enable comprehensive Electronic Performance Monitoring (EPM) which may also have negative effects (e.g., increased stress and a reduction in job satisfaction). This conceptual article investigates EPM to better understand the development, adoption, and impact of EPM systems in organizations. The EPM literature published since the 1980s constitutes the basis for this conceptual article. We present a framework which is intended to serve as foundation for future studies. Moreover, we reviewed more than three decades of empirical EPM research and identified six major outcomes that are influenced by the use of an EPM system, as well as a large number of moderator variables. Based on our conceptual analyses and the resulting insights, which also include privacy, ethical, and cultural considerations, we discuss future research opportunities where we also refer to design implications for EPM systems.

We discuss the methodologies of and considerations for these frequently used techniques, as well as those for some alternative techniques. A water-soluble non-quaternary copolymeric ammonium salt (P7) was herein synthetized by copolymerizing 2-methoxy-6-(4-vinylbenzyloxy)-benzylammonium hydrochloride monomer with N, N-di-methyl-acrylamide. The antibacterial activity of P7 was assessed against several multidrug-resistant (MDR) clinical isolates of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative species. Except for colistin-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, most isolates were susceptible to P7, also including some Gram-negative bacteria with a modified charge in the external membrane. Progression probability after 26.8 years of theoretical follow-up was 24.0%; probability of death, 1.0%. Progression was more rapid and ≈2 times more likely for indigenous Māori or Pacific Islander patients. Of 435 initial RHD patients, 82.2% had not been previously hospitalized for ARF. This young cohort demonstrated low mortality rates but considerable illness, especially among underserved populations. A national patient register could help monitor, prevent, and reduce ARF progression.
