SNOLAB is a deep underground research laboratory in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada located 2 km beneath the surface of the planet. At this depth, significant shielding of NBR components is provided by the rock overburden. Here, we describe a Specialized Tissue Culture Incubator (STCI) that was engineered to significantly reduce background ionizing radiation levels. The STCI was installed 2 km deep underground within SNOLAB. It was designed to allow precise control of experimental variables such as temperature, atmospheric gas composition and humidity. More importantly, the STCI was designed to reduce radiological contaminants present within the underground laboratory. Quantitative measurements validated the STCI is capable of maintaining an appropriate experimental environment for sub-NBR experiments. This included reduction of sub-surface radiological contaminants, most notably radon gas. The STCI presents a truly novel piece of infrastructure enabling future research into the effects of sub-NBR exposure in a highly unique laboratory setting.This study is aimed at assessing the performance of water treatment plants (both wastewater and drinking water treatment plants) for dissolved organic matter (DOM) removal using excitation-emission matrix fluorescence (EEMF) as the monitoring technique. The influent from the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of Burgos (Spain) is characterized from the presence of protein-like peaks (T1 and T2) and humic-like peaks (A and C), T2 and A showing the highest fluorescence intensity. The percentages of total removal in the effluent were in the following order peak T1 (65%) > peak A (45%) > peak C (34%) > peak T2 (26%). The humic-like peaks were the most removed at the primary sedimentation stage, whereas peak T1 was by far the most removed in the biological reactor. Protein-like peaks T1 and T2 experienced a slight increase in the final effluent in comparison to their fluorescence at the previous stage (the exit of the biological reactor), an increase that can be explained by the release of SMP (soluble microbial products) from the biomass in the secondary clarifier. A poor correlation was obtained between peak T2 fluorescence and COD, BOD (r2 = 0.34-0.38). The natural water from the Úzquiza reservoir in Burgos (Spain) is characterized by the only presence of humic substances a majority peak A (fulvic-like) and a weak peak C (humic-like). The whole fluorescent DOM was removed by coagulation-flocculation but a low fluorescence peak T2 appeared at the final stage, coming from protein-like SMPs released by the biomass attached to the filters.A new class of ditrifluoroacetoxyboron complexes were designed and synthesized by chelation reaction of curcumins with boron trifluoroacetate. Their photophysical behaviors were studied in different solvents, powder state and PMMA polymer films. The results indicated that these complexes revealed a green to yellow emission at 486-595 nm in solution or PMMA films and an orange to red emission at 598-710 nm in powder state. Especially, complex 2c displayed the strongest emission intensity, the highest quantum yield in solution and the longest fluorescence lifetime in powder state in these complexes. In addtion, the emission bathochromic shifts of these complexes as a function of the solvent polarity parameter ET(30) were investigated by Lippert-Mataga approximation. It was observed that these complexes exhibited the higher values of the dipole moment difference (Δμ) between the ground and excited states, which implied an intense intramolecular charge transfer characteristics and a noticeable emission solvatochromic effect.The time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) was used to obtain vibronic absorption spectra of acridine orange dye (AO) in an aqueous solution that were in good agreement with the experiment. The protonated and neutral forms of the dye have been investigated. The results of calculations using various functionals and basis sets have been analyzed. The best agreement with experiment was given by the level of theory X3LYP/6-31G(d,p). AO molecular orbitals involved in electronic transitions due light absorption in the visible region of the spectrum have been obtained. The dipole moments and atomic charges of the ground and excited states of the AO molecule have been calculated. Maps of the electrostatic potential have been drawn. An insignificant photoinduced electron transfer was found in the central ring of the chromophore of the dye molecule. According to our calculations, the vibronic coupling and the Boltzmann distribution play a significant role in the absorption spectra of the AO.

  • Results There were 26 TB patients and 26 healthy control people. Serum ADA level at the beginning of TB treatment was higher than the level at the end of intensive phase treatment. There was a significant difference between serum ADA level before and after the intensive phase of TB treatment (P less then 0.001). Conclusions The examination of serum ADA levels can be used to evaluate the PTB treatment response.Background Perfect implementation of the six priority policies advocated by the MPOWER package is the most important challenge for member states (MS) to reach tobacco control goals. Methods A validated checklist set according to the WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic was filled out five times based on biannual reports from 2011 to 2019 for 22 MS in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. It contained ten topics including smoking prevalence and seven elements of six MPOWER policies and compliances resulting with possible maximum score of 37. High score indicates better implementation. Results The total score for the region increased from 416 in 2011 to 509 in 2019. Six countries (27% of the region) had more than 75% of total score, whereas 11 countries were between 50% and 75% and five countries had less then 50% of total score in 2019. In all five reports, Iran was ranked first in the region even in 2019, when it witnessed a 2 point decrease. Iran held the first place alongside with Pakistan and Saudi Arabia with 32 points. The highest score in the indicators was related to the monitoring, reaching from 35 in 2011 to 59 in 2019. The lowest score increase in the indicators was related to the Smoke-free Policy compliance and the prevalence of consumption, reaching from 18 to 20 and 44-48, respectively, between 2011 and 2019. Conclusions Although several remarkable achievements have been made regarding tobacco control goals, many policy implementation challenges remain and require urgent action by member states in the Eastern Mediterranean region.Background Central airway obstruction (CAO) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with thoracic malignancies. In this prospective study, we describe the role of rigid bronchoscopy (RB) in the multimodality management of CAO. Methods Prospective description of different rigid bronchoscopic techniques used for CAO between July 2016 and July 2019. Results A total of 152 procedures (124 therapeutic/palliative and 28 diagnostics) in 111 adults and 10 pediatric patients were performed. The mean age in 111 adults (66 males) and 10 pediatric (5 males) patients were 45.4 ± 15.8 (range 16-80) and 5.4 ± 3.6 (range 1-10) years, respectively. Palliation of the airway obstruction (48.8%) and establishment of diagnosis (23.2%) were the main indications of RB in our study. Mechanical debulking in 53 (57%) and airway dilatation in 40 (43%) patients were the most utilized interventions during the palliative or therapeutic RB. There was a significant decrease in mean (modified Medical Research Council) dyspnea scale from 3.9 ± 1.0 to 1.42 ± 0.63 and increase in mean Visual Analogue Scale from 2.06 ± 0.74 to 8.7 ± 0.54 after the procedure (P less then 0.0001). Additional therapy was undertaken in 38 (31.4%) of 121 patients, and surgical excision was the primary form of definitive treatment in 17 patients Moderate bleeding was encountered in 13.3% of the procedures mainly in the diagnostic RB. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/ulk-101.html The mean procedure duration was 28.4 (range, 11-49) min and 13.2 (7-22) min in the adults and pediatric patients, respectively. This is the largest series of bronchoscopic device closure of BPF being reported from India. Materials and Methods This was a retrospective analysis of data of patients who underwent bronchoscopic device closure with various techniques for the management of postoperative BPF. In total, 11 patients (six males and five females) with a mean age (±standard deviation) of 42.72 ± 14.40 years with BPFs were treated with various bronchoscopic interventions for BPF closure. We used various devices such as endobronchial coils, occluder devices, and covered tracheobronchial self-expandable stents for BPF closure depending on the size of air leaks. We describe the various devices used, technique, and outcome of bronchoscopic management of BPF. Results All our patients had developed BPFs postoperatively. Pulmonary tuberculosis was the most common etiology seen in nine of our patients. All the devices were placed using a fiberoptic bronchoscope, and all patients were followed up for a minimum duration of 6 months. We successfully localized and closed BPFs in nine (81.81%) of our patients. Conclusions Bronchoscopic device closure can be a successful strategy to manage postoperative BPF with minimal complications.Background Respiratory disorders are important contributors to disease burden across the world. The aim is to assess the proportionate burden of types of respiratory diseases and their seasonal patterns in India we are performing a field study. The present report describes methodological aspects of a respiratory disease point prevalence survey from India. Methods A total of 4108 chest physicians were invited. Acceptance was received from 420 sites. Chest physicians were classified according to location of practice one as medical college, district government hospital, private hospital, and private clinics. Qualifications of practicing chest physicians were postgraduate in chest medicine, including Doctorate of Medicine (68.4%), diploma in chest medicine (22.1%), and Postgraduate in Medicine (9.5%). The study questionnaire was designed to record demographic data, comorbidities, risk factors, and respiratory conditions based on ICD-10. Results A total of 366 sites provided baseline data, and the response rate of recruitment of the study sites was 8.

  • For mMRI (where the resolution mimics the clinical MRI of human cartilage), the quantitative T2 mapping at AFs up to 4 showed negligible variations. This study aimed to identify phenotypes across prognostic factors and musculoskeletal complaints. Concurrent and external validity were assessed against an established instrument and a new sample, respectively, and treatment outcome was described. METHODS We conducted a longitudinal observational study of 435 patients (aged 18-67 years) seeking treatment for nonspecific complaints in the neck, shoulder, low **** or multisite/complex pain in primary health care physiotherapy in Norway. Latent class analysis was used to identify phenotypes based on 11 common prognostic factors within four biopsychosocial domains; pain, beliefs and thoughts, psychological and activity and lifestyle. The survivors' HRQOL was also compared to reference scores from the population. METHODS In this exploratory cross-sectional study patients were invited 15 months after their diagnosis and asked to answer two quality of life questionnaires (EORTC QLQ- C30, EORTC QLQ- HN35), 405 participated. RESULTS HRQOL was associated with gender, with males scoring better than females on a few scales. Patients' HRQOL was more associated with treatment than tumor stage. Patients' HRQOL was worse than that in an age- and sex-matched reference group from the normal population, the largest differences were found for problems with dry mouth followed by problems with sticky saliva, senses, swallowing and appetite loss. CONCLUSIONS The tonsillar carcinoma patients had a worse HRQOL compared to the general population one year after treatment. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.BACKGROUND The primary purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility and acceptability of participation in a randomized waitlist-controlled intervention of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) in a young adult cancer sample. A secondary aim was to examine patterns of change in patient reported outcomes (PROs) of physical, social, and emotional functioning. METHODS Participants were enrolled at a large Midwestern comprehensive cancer center and randomized to MBSR or a waitlist control. Feasibility and acceptability were examined through enrollment metrics and a survey. PROs were gathered at baseline, 8-weeks, and 16-weeks. Descriptive statistics and mixed models were used in analyses. RESULTS Of 597 eligible participants, 151 (26.5%) consented from which 126 (83.4%) completed baseline measures. Sixty-seven participants were randomized to MBSR, and 59 to the waitlist. Immediately following MBSR, the majority of respondents (72%-78%) reported their experience with mindfulness was very logical and useful to increasing their wellbeing. Compared to waitlist members, MBSR participant's scores on PROs improved in expected directions. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that recruitment for an intensive, in-person, multi-week supportive intervention can be challenging with young adults with cancer, similar to other cancer survivor populations; however once enrolled, feasibility and acceptability of MBSR was supported. Descriptive statistics and mixed models were used in analyses. RESULTS Of 597 eligible participants, 151 (26.5%) consented from which 126 (83.4%) completed baseline measures. Sixty-seven participants were randomized to MBSR, and 59 to the waitlist. Immediately following MBSR, the majority of respondents (72%-78%) reported their experience with mindfulness was very logical and useful to increasing their wellbeing. Compared to waitlist members, MBSR participant's scores on PROs improved in expected directions. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that recruitment for an intensive, in-person, multi-week supportive intervention can be challenging with young adults with cancer, similar to other cancer survivor populations; however once enrolled, feasibility and acceptability of MBSR was supported. A secondary aim was to examine patterns of change in patient reported outcomes (PROs) of physical, social, and emotional functioning. METHODS Participants were enrolled at a large Midwestern comprehensive cancer center and randomized to MBSR or a waitlist control. Feasibility and acceptability were examined through enrollment metrics and a survey. PROs were gathered at baseline, 8-weeks, and 16-weeks. Descriptive statistics and mixed models were used in analyses. RESULTS Of 597 eligible participants, 151 (26.5%) consented from which 126 (83.4%) completed baseline measures. Sixty-seven participants were randomized to MBSR, and 59 to the waitlist. Immediately following MBSR, the majority of respondents (72%-78%) reported their experience with mindfulness was very logical and useful to increasing their wellbeing. Compared to waitlist members, MBSR participant's scores on PROs improved in expected directions. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that recruitment for an intensive, in-person, multi-week supportive intervention can be challenging with young adults with cancer, similar to other cancer survivor populations; however once enrolled, feasibility and acceptability of MBSR was supported. With regard to dmfs index and socio-economic status, an association between these polymorphisms and primary dentition caries was investigated. RESULTS ACTN2 (rs6655267) and MPPED2 (rs536007) are not associated with primary dentition caries. MPPED2 (rs11031093, G Allele) is marginally associated. The total antioxidant activity (TAA) of milk is a novel and scarcely explored trait, defined as the sum of antioxidant contributions of the aforementioned compounds. On this background, the aims of the present study were to investigate the variability of milk TAA on a large scale exploiting predictions obtained through mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy and to estimate genetic parameters of this trait in Holstein cows. Individual milk samples were collected between January 2011 and December 2018 duringthat an indirect favourable selection for milk pTAA should be already in progress in Italian Holstein population.Sufficient supply of oxygen is a major bottleneck in industrial biotechnological synthesis. One example is the heterologous production of rhamnolipids using Pseudomonas putida KT2440. Typically, the synthesis is accompanied by strong foam formation in the reactor vessel hampering the process. It is caused by the extensive bubbling needed to sustain the high respirative oxygen demand in the presence of the produced surfactants. One way to reduce the oxygen requirement is to enable the cells to use the anode of a bioelectrochemical system (BES) as an alternative sink for their metabolically derived electrons. We here used a P. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/caerulein.html putida KT2440 strain that interacts with the anode using mediated extracellular electron transfer via intrinsically produced phenazines, to perform heterologous rhamnolipid production under oxygen limitation. Eyelid geckos (Eublepharidae) are of particular interest, as they encompass species with both environmental and genotypic sex determination. We identified for the first time the X-specific gene content in the Yucatán banded gecko, Coleonyx elegans, possessing X1X1X2X2/X1X2Y multiple sex chromosomes by comparative genome coverage analysis between sexes. The X-specific gene content of Coleonyx elegans was revealed to be partially homologous to genomic regions linked to the chicken autosomes 1, 6 and 11. A qPCR-based test was applied to validate a subset of X-specific genes by comparing the difference in gene copy numbers between sexes, and to explore the homology of sex chromosomes across eleven eublepharid, two phyllodactylid and one sphaerodactylid species. Homologous sex chromosomes are shared between Coleonyx elegans and Coleonyx mitratus, two species diverged approximately 34 million years ago, but not with other tested species. Although most asthmatic patients are symptom-free with standard treatments, a small percentage of them suffer from uncontrolled persistent asthma. In these children, a multidisciplinary systematic assessment, including comorbidities, treatment-related issues, environmental exposures, and psychosocial factors is needed. The identification of modifiable factors is important to differentiate children with difficult asthma from those with true severe therapy-resistant asthma. Early intervention on modifiable factors for children with difficult asthma allows for better control of asthma without the need for invasive investigation and further escalation of treatment. The purpose of this study was to explore and clarify the existence of any relationships of individual BCAAs and AAAs with hypertension with adjustments for potential relevant confounders. A total of 2805 healthy controls and 2736 hypertensive patients were included in the current analysis. The associations between individual amino acids and hypertension were explored by logistic regression analyses adjusted for potential confounding variables. Among the investigated amino acids, only the BCAAs showed consistently significant positive associations with hypertension in the adjusted models (p-trend less then 0.05 to 0.001). However, compared with the corresponding lowest quartile of individual BCAAs, the positive association with hypertension remained significant only in the highest quartile (p less then 0.01 to 0.001). We confirmed in a relatively large cohort of subjects that BCAAs, not AAAs, demonstrated consistent positive associations with hypertension.

Homologous sex chromosomes are shared between Coleonyx elegans and Coleonyx mitratus, two species diverged approximately 34 million years ago, but not with other tested species. The identification of modifiable factors is important to differentiate children with difficult asthma from those with true severe therapy-resistant asthma. Early intervention on modifiable factors for children with difficult asthma allows for better control of asthma without the need for invasive investigation and further escalation of treatment. Otherwise, addressing a correct diagnosis of true severe therapy-resistant asthma avoids diagnostic and therapeutic delays, allowing patients to benefit from using new and advanced biological therapies.Findings of the available studies regarding the roles of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and aromatic amino acids (AAAs) in hypertension are inconsistent, conflicting and inconclusive. The purpose of this study was to explore and clarify the existence of any relationships of individual BCAAs and AAAs with hypertension with adjustments for potential relevant confounders. A total of 2805 healthy controls and 2736 hypertensive patients were included in the current analysis. The associations between individual amino acids and hypertension were explored by logistic regression analyses adjusted for potential confounding variables. Among the investigated amino acids, only the BCAAs showed consistently significant positive associations with hypertension in the adjusted models (p-trend less then 0.05 to 0.001). However, compared with the corresponding lowest quartile of individual BCAAs, the positive association with hypertension remained significant only in the highest quartile (p less then 0.01 to 0.001). We confirmed in a relatively large cohort of subjects that BCAAs, not AAAs, demonstrated consistent positive associations with hypertension.

Many of these outbreaks are occurring in remote, or resource-limited areas, that do not have access to molecular laboratories. Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) is a rapid point of care test that can overcome a range of inhibitors. We outline further development of a real-time ASFV LAMP, including field verification during an outbreak in Timor-Leste. To increase field applicability, the extraction step was removed and an internal amplification control (IAC) was implemented. Assay performance was assessed in six different sample matrices and verified for a range of clinical samples. A LAMP detection limit of 400 copies/rxn was determined based on synthetic positive control spikes. A colourmetric LAMP assay was also assessed on serum samples. Comparison of the LAMP assay to a quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was performed on clinical ASFV samples, using both serum and oral/rectal swabs, with a substantial level of agreement observed. The further verification of the ASFV LAMP assay, removal of extraction step, implementation of an IAC and the assessment of a range of sample matrix, further support the use of this assay for rapid in-field detection of ASFV.This study aimed to clarify whether ossification predisposition influences clinical symptoms including pain, restriction of activities of daily living, and quality of life in patients with cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL). We have observed reasonable shifts of the spontaneous vibrations and stochastic resonance modes when attaching an analyte molecule to the oligomer. After controlling for sociodemographic and health status characteristics, results of multinomial logistic regression revealed drinking alcohol (stress perception odds ratio (OR) = 1.61, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.19-2.19; depressive mood OR = 2.59, 95% CI = 1.67-4.02; suicidal thoughts OR = 2.28, 95% CI = 1.18-4.42), increased sedentary time (stress perception OR = 1.88, 95% CI = 1.36-2.58), ≤6 h weekday sleep (stress perception OR = 1.28, 95% CI = 1.00-1.66; suicidal thoughts OR = 1.98, 95% CI = 1.05-3.75), and 8 h ≤ weekend sleep (stress perception OR = 0.74, 95% CI = 0.56-0.98; depressive mood OR = 0.63, 95% CI = 0.41-0.98; suicidal thoughts OR = 0.41, 95% CI = 0.21-0.79) were significantly associated with mental health problems.

  • Through this availability, the last decades have seen an increase of fatal intoxications. Websites selling them are regularly closed by French public authorities and Interpol, but unfortunately it seems insufficient.BACKGROUND Between 2010 and 2014, microscopic transsphenoidal surgery (mTSS) was performed more frequently than endoscopic TSS (eTSS) in the USA. However, few epidemiological studies on pituitary surgery are currently available. METHODS We performed a retrospective study on patients who had undergone pituitary surgery between July 2010 and March 2016. To this end, a nationwide inpatient database in Japan was used. Patients' characteristics, diagnoses, types of surgery, complications, and discharge status were examined. RESULTS A total of 16,253 inpatients who received pituitary surgery were identified. Patients were diagnosed with diseases for insurance claims described below pituitary adenoma, hyperprolactinemia, other pituitary disorders (e.g., Rathke's cleft cyst), hyperpituitarism, craniopharyngioma, acromegaly, Cushing's disease, and pituitary cancer. Among them, pituitary adenomas, primarily the non-functioning ones, were the most frequent (66.9%). A total of 14,285 (88%) patients underwent TSS, while 1968 (12%) patients were treated using transcranial surgery. The number of patients undergoing TSS increased each year. The number of eTSS operations was 8140 (77%) and that of mTSS operations was 2419 (23%). Of note, eTSS increased each year. We found that high-volume hospitals more frequently selected eTSS. Compared with mTSS, eTSS was associated with a reduction of hyponatremia incidence (odds ratio, 0.69; p = 0.019). Additionally, it was not associated with other major complications. CONCLUSION The present study showed that both TSS and eTSS increased on a yearly basis. We believe that the present study will be the basis of future epidemiological investigations of pituitary surgery.PURPOSE The role of surgery in the management of congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN) is controversial. The overall satisfaction with surgical management was good, although no predictors for satisfaction could be identified. Higher current age of the child was found to predict decision regret in proxy-reports. Most participants indicated that having a scar is more socially acceptable than a CMN. Opinions differed on whether surgery should be deferred until the child is old enough to be involved in the decision-making process. CONCLUSIONS Whether and when to perform surgery in children with CMN is a multifaceted question. Forty (78.4%) patients were diabetic and 17.6% had hematological malignancies. The majority (60.8%) had stage 2 or 3 disease. Partial/total maxillectomy (29.4%), orbital exenteration (7.8%) and craniotomy (2%) were also performed at a single session in 20 patients. Intra-operative sampling of all sinuses was performed. Six patients who appeared to have unilateral disease based on clinicoradiological assessment were found to have bilateral disease.

    The long-term course of ulcerative colitis [UC] is difficult to predict. Mortality, colectomy, cancer, and hospitalisation represent hard outcomes of disease. Moreover, knowledge on the risk of relapses and need for potent medication add important information about living with UC. We aimed to evaluate the course and prognosis of UC during the first 20 years after diagnosis, and to identify early prognostic risk factors.

    From 1990 to 1994, a population-based inception cohort of patients with inflammatory bowel disease was enrolled in South-Eastern Norway. A systematic follow-up [FU] was conducted at 1,5, 10, and 20 years after diagnosis. Clinical outcomes were recorded continuously, and possible relationships between early disease characteristics and outcomes were analysed using multiple regression analysis.

    Among 519 UC patients, 119 died, 60 were lost to FU, and 340 were included in the FU cohort. The 20-year cumulative risk of colectomy was 13.0% (95% confidence interval [CI] [11.4-14.6]). Extensive colitis at diagnosis was independently associated with an increased risk of colectomy compared with proctitis (hazard ratio [HR] = 2].8, 95% CI [1.3-6.1]). In contrast, mucosal healing at 1-year FU was independently associated with reduced risk of colectomy [HR = 0.4, 95% CI [0.2-0.8]), and inversely associated with subsequent risk of relapse [adjusted HR = 0.5, 95% CI [0.3-0.7]).

Using mixed-method research, we recruited users of a health website and general practice patients to surveys (n = 441) and telephone interviews (n = 40). We contribute specific evidence investigating barriers to access, use and benefit from digital health services within an equity framework that incorporates social determinant factors, eHealth Literacy and trust. Our research highlights the foundational role of trust in predicting use, showcases which groups are unlikely to benefit from population-oriented digital health services, and proposes strategies to enhance the equity of these services. The theoretical framework we developed serves as a roadmap for future health promotion research and action by outlining the complex and interrelated pathways that can promote and threaten digital health equity.Enzyme catalysis is omnipresent in the cell. With experiments performed at close to native conditions, catalytic transformations can be monitored in real time, giving access to kinetic parameters. The power of NMR in the solid state, in contrast with solution, lies in the absence of fundamental size limitations, which is crucial for enzymes that are either membrane-embedded or assemble into large soluble complexes exceeding hundreds of kilodaltons in molecular weight. Here we review recent progress in solid-state NMR methodology, which has taken big leaps in the past years due to steady improvements in hardware design, notably magic angle spinning, and connect it to parallel biochemical advances that enable isotope labelling of increasingly complex enzymes. We first discuss general concepts and requirements of the method and then highlight the state-of-the-art in sample preparation, structure determination, dynamics and interaction studies. We focus on examples where solid-state NMR has been instrumental in elucidating enzyme mechanism, alone or in integrative studies.Physiological assessment is challenging in patients with multivessel disease (MVD) with a chronic total occlusion (CTO) and may result in inappropriate treatment decisions. We report herein, for the first time to our knowledge, on the dynamic changes of the instantaneous wave-free ratio in the CTO collateral donor artery before and after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Our case highlights the paramount importance of collateral circulation when interpreting invasive indices of coronary stenosis severity to guide decision-making for CABG in MVD patients with a CTO. This may be particularly relevant to reduce the risk of early graft failure in patients with MVD undergoing CABG.

Here, we evaluated the contributions of endothelial loss to acute and chronic corneal injuries in SM-exposed eyes. METHODS Rabbit eyes were exposed in vivo to equivalent doses of SM using 9-, 11-, or 14-mm vapor caps. The effects of exposure area on corneal injury progression were longitudinally evaluated over 12 weeks using clinical evaluations. The effects of exposure area on CEC morphology, endothelial and epithelial ultrastructure, and endothelial barrier function were determined from 1 day to 12 weeks. METHODS Data on 83,975 patients with PHFs were included from the Premier Healthcare Claims database (2006 to 2016) and stratified by Deyo-Charlson index. Multivariable models assessed associations between Deyo-Charlson comorbidities and resource utilization (length and cost of hospitalization, and opioid utilization in oral morphine equivalents [OME]) for five treatment modalities (1) open reduction internal fixation (ORIF), (2) closed reduction internal fixation (CRIF), (3) hemiarthroplasty, (4) reverse total shoulder arthroplasty, and (5) nonsurgical treatment (NST).
