The bivariate (Pearson) correlation analysis showed that SEOTE significantly influenced on SDLR (r=524, p less then .01) and LLMS was positively associated with SDLR (r=487, p less then .01). The multiple linear regression revealed that SEOTE and LLMS significantly predicted SDLR and explained 31.4% of variance in SDLR. The results of mediated regression analysis revealed that LLMS did have a significant indirect or mediating effect with SEOTE in predicting SDLR.The effect of the suspect-corroborator relationship and number of corroborators on alibi assessments was examined across two experiments. In both experiments, we explored the effect of relationship type and number of corroborators on believability, likelihood of guilt, and decision to retain the suspect as the primary suspect; we increased the social distance between the alibi provider and suspect and the size of difference between the number of corroborators in Experiment 2. Collectively, our results support Olson and Wells' taxonomy of alibi believability as (a) any form of person evidence mitigates pre-alibi judgments of guilt (although there is a ceiling effect), and (b) alibis corroborated by non-motivated others were judged more favourably than those corroborated by motivated others. Our results lend support toward extending the original taxonomy to include the number of corroborators. The implications for the alibi assessments are discussed.

  • Children whose parents with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and family of index clients are at high risk of HIV infection. Family testing is an efficient and effective way of identifying children's HIV. The number of children becoming newly infected with HIV remains unacceptably high. This study is to assess human immune deficiency, virus serostatus, and associated factors among children of adult index cases in central Tigrai, Northern Ethiopia, 2019.

    An institution-based cross-sectional study design was conducted to select a total of 454 index cases from February 01 to April 30, 2019. Data were collected from adult clients on antiretroviral treatment who have children using administered questionnaires and data extraction from the hospital antiretroviral register. Simple random sampling was used to select the index cases using the medical record number. Binary logistic regression analysis, odds ratio, and 95% confidence interval were used to determine the strength of association between dependent and independent variables. Statistical significance was declared a P-value <0.05.

    The prevalence of HIV in children from family index case testing was 8.9% with 95% CI (6.5-11.6). Female index clients [AOR=0.18, 95% CI 06-0.55], the age of the child [AOR=0.86, 95% CI 0.76, 0.97], importance of HIV testing [AOR=5.20, 95% CI 2.2011.96], and discussion HIV testing [AOR=3.22, 95% CI 1.5-16.84]. Participants who did not discuss HIV were 3.2 more likely have HIV positive child than who discussed with family members.

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is the treatment option for people infected by the HIV virus and helps them to lead longer and healthier lives and improve their quality of life. This study aimed to measure level of satisfaction and associated factors among patients receiving ART services in ART Clinics at Jimma Town Public Health Facilities, Southwest, Ethiopia.

    Facility-based, cross-sectional study was employed from March to April, 2018 among 383 clients attending ART in three public health facilities of Jimma town. Data was collected using exit interviewer administrated pre-test structured, coded and entered using Epi-data version 3.5.1 and then exported and analyzed using SPSS version 20 software. Variables having p < 0.25 at bivariate analysis were fitted to multivariate analysis. OR, P-value and 95% CI were computed to show the association of variables (p < 0.05).

    A total of 383 clients involved in the services provision. Factors like duration of stay on ART and waiting time to get service should be taken into consideration to improve the patient's satisfaction.

    A total of 58 patients (84 implants) were enrolled; each individual implant was considered as a separate sample first, then sampling by patient was also applied, implants were divided into group A systemically healthy patients and B patients with hypertension and diabetes mellitus type II, the status of peri-implant tissue was followed after the healing abutment placement, with regard to implant mucosal index (IMI), probing pocket depth (PPD) and bleeding on probing (BOP); when sampling was done by patient, the mean of scores of all examined implants in each patient was taken to represent one sample.

    Group A implants showed higher mean scores of PPD (5.2 mm) than group B (4.2 mm) with significance (P = 0.014), and higher mean scores of BOP, group A = 0.71, group B = 0.45 with (P = 0.015); there was no statistical difference with regard to IMI, group A = 1.35, group B = 1.16 with (P = 0.172). Similar results were obtained when the sampling was calculated by patient; PPD group A (5.31 mm), group B (4.75 mm) and P = 0.008, IMI group A (1.34), group B (1.16) and P = 0.131, BOP group A (0.75), group B (0.48) and P = 0.03.

    Preoperative diagnosis of uterine leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is challenging because the disease can mimic benign leiomyoma (LM). The objective of the present study was to investigate the role of preoperative clinical characteristics and hematologic parameters to differentiate uterine LMS and LM.

    Preoperative clinical and laboratory variables were reviewed retrospectively in patients with LMS or LM, and the significances of intergroup differences were assessed.   • Pyruvate is irreversibly decarboxylated to acetyl coenzyme A by mitochondrial pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC). Decarboxylation of pyruvate is considered a crucial step in cell metabolism and energetics. The cancer cells prefer aerobic glycolysis rather than mitochondrial oxidation of pyruvate. This attribute of cancer cells allows them to sustain under indefinite proliferation and growth. Pyruvate dehydrogenase kinases (PDKs) play critical roles in many diseases because they regulate PDC activity. Recent findings suggest an altered metabolism of cancer cells is associated with impaired mitochondrial function due to PDC inhibition. PDKs inhibit the PDC activity via phosphorylation of the E1a subunit and subsequently cause a glycolytic shift. Thus, inhibition of PDK is an attractive strategy in anticancer therapy. This review highlights that PDC/PDK axis could be implicated in cancer's therapeutic management by developing potential small-molecule PDK inhibitors. In recent years, a dramatic increase in the targeting of the PDC/PDK axis for cancer treatment gained an attention from the scientific community. We further discuss breakthrough findings in the PDC-PDK axis. In addition, structural features, functional significance, mechanism of activation, involvement in various human pathologies, and expression of different forms of PDKs (PDK1-4) in different types of cancers are discussed in detail. We further emphasized the gene expression profiling of PDKs in cancer patients to prognosis and therapeutic manifestations. Additionally, inhibition of the PDK/PDC axis by small molecule inhibitors and natural compounds at different clinical evaluation stages has also been discussed comprehensively.Effective treatment regimens for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) are relatively scarce due to a lack of specific therapeutic targets. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signaling is highly active in TNBC and is associated with poor prognosis. Most EGFR antagonists, which significantly improve outcome in lung and colon cancer, have shown limited clinical effects in breast cancer. However, limiting EGFR expression in TNBC is a potential strategy for improving the clinical efficacy of EGFR antagonists. Here, we found that the gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptor π subunit (GABRP), as a membrane protein enriched in TNBC stem cells, interacted with EGFR and significantly sustained its expression, resulting in stemness maintenance and chemotherapy resistance. Silencing GABRP induced down-regulation of EGFR signaling, which hindered cell stemness and enhanced sensitivity to chemotherapies, including paclitaxel, doxorubicin, and cisplatin. Decarboxylation of pyruvate is considered a crucial step in cell metabolism and energetics. The cancer cells prefer aerobic glycolysis rather than mitochondrial oxidation of pyruvate. This attribute of cancer cells allows them to sustain under indefinite proliferation and growth. Pyruvate dehydrogenase kinases (PDKs) play critical roles in many diseases because they regulate PDC activity. Recent findings suggest an altered metabolism of cancer cells is associated with impaired mitochondrial function due to PDC inhibition. PDKs inhibit the PDC activity via phosphorylation of the E1a subunit and subsequently cause a glycolytic shift. Thus, inhibition of PDK is an attractive strategy in anticancer therapy. This review highlights that PDC/PDK axis could be implicated in cancer's therapeutic management by developing potential small-molecule PDK inhibitors. In recent years, a dramatic increase in the targeting of the PDC/PDK axis for cancer treatment gained an attention from the scientific community. We further discuss breakthrough findings in the PDC-PDK axis. In addition, structural features, functional significance, mechanism of activation, involvement in various human pathologies, and expression of different forms of PDKs (PDK1-4) in different types of cancers are discussed in detail. We further emphasized the gene expression profiling of PDKs in cancer patients to prognosis and therapeutic manifestations. Here, we found that the gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptor π subunit (GABRP), as a membrane protein enriched in TNBC stem cells, interacted with EGFR and significantly sustained its expression, resulting in stemness maintenance and chemotherapy resistance. Silencing GABRP induced down-regulation of EGFR signaling, which hindered cell stemness and enhanced sensitivity to chemotherapies, including paclitaxel, doxorubicin, and cisplatin.   • To estimate the hospital costs among persons with obesity undergoing bariatric surgery compared with those without bariatric surgery.

The 5-year cumulative costs were €11,176 for surgical patients and €8759 for controls (P = 0.001).

Per- and postoperative complications (vascular, urinary, parietal, and digestive complications) within 30 days were listed. Predictive models of surgical complications were generated based on the results of the logistic regression. Among the 163 patients included, 53 (32.5%) experienced surgical complications. The AP was a risk factor for complications in multivariate analysis (OR 1.050; 95% CI 1.016-1.087; p = 0.03). Two predictive models of complications were created based on the statistical analysis a one-variable model based on AP (sensitivity 86.8%, specificity 41.8%, area under the curve (AUC) 65.3, with a cutoff value of 107 cm) and a five-variable model based on BMI, TFS, SFS, VSD, and AP (sensitivity 73.6%, specificity 57.3%, AUC 66.2). These models, based on patient morphometric measurements, could allow predicting the occurrence of surgical complications in obese candidates for kidney transplantation.To further the understanding of the evolution of transcriptional regulation, we profiled genome-wide transcriptional start sites (TSSs) in two sub-species, Bos taurus taurus and Bos taurus indicus, that diverged approximately 500,000 years ago. The 16% of all SNPs located in significant differentially used TSS clusters across sub-species had significant shifts in allele frequency (472 SNPs), indicating they may have been subject to selection. In spleen and muscle, a higher relative TSS expression was observed in Bos indicus than Bos taurus for all heat shock protein genes, which may be responsible for the tropical adaptation of Bos indicus.

    The primary purpose of this study is to conduct more reliable research to evaluate the lagged meteorological impacts on COVID-19 incidence by considering a relatively long study period and diversified high-risk areas in the United States.

    This study adopted the distributed lagged nonlinear model with a spatial function to analyze COVID-19 incidence predicted by multiple meteorological measures from March to October of 2020 across 203 high-risk counties in the United States. The estimated spatial function was further smoothed within the entire continental United States by the biharmonic spline interpolation.

    Our findings suggest that the maximum temperature, minimum relative humidity, and precipitation were the best meteorological predictors. Most significantly positive associations were found from 3 to 11 lagged days in lower levels of each selected meteorological factor. In particular, a significantly positive association appeared in minimum relative humidity higher than 88.36% at 5-day lag. The spatial analysis also shows excessive risks in the north-central United States.

    Toenail metal concentrations can be used as an effective biomarker for exposure to environmental toxicants. Typically toenail clippings are measured ex vivo using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). X-ray fluorescence (XRF) toenail metal measurements done on intact toenails in vivo could be used as an alternative to alleviate some of the disadvantages of ICP-MS. In this study, we assessed the ability to use XRF to measure toenail metal concentrations in real-time without having to clip the toenails (i.e., in vivo) in two occupational settings for exposure assessment of manganese and mercury.

In the present study, we demonstrated that T. cruzi epimastigote cell proliferation and viability are reduced after 72 h of TST treatment. The results obtained through different microscopy methodologies suggest that this inhibitor impairs the polymerization dynamics of cytoskeleton microtubules, generating protozoa displaying atypical morphology and cellular patterns that include polynucleated parasites. Furthermore, the microtubules of treated protozoa were more intensely acetylated, especially at the anterior portion of the cell body. A cell cycle analysis demonstrated an increase in the number of trypanosomatids in the G2/M phase.   • Objectives The aim of this study was to investigate whether echocardiographic assessment of myocardial work is a predictor of outcome in advanced heart failure. Background Global work index (GWI) and global constructive work (GCW) are calculated by means of speckle tracking, blood pressure measurement, and a normalized reference curve. Their prognostic value in advanced heart failure is unknown. Methods Cardiopulmonary exercise testing and echocardiography with assessment of GWI and GCW was performed in patients with advanced heart failure caused by ischemic heart disease or dilated cardiomyopathy (n = 105). They were then followed up repeatedly. The combined endpoint was all-cause death, implantation of a left ventricular assist device, or heart transplantation. Results The median patient age was 54 years (interquartile range [IQR] 48-59.9). The mean left ventricular ejection fraction was 27.8 ± 8.2%, the median NT-proBNP was 1,210 pg/ml (IQR 435-3,696). However, the impact of aging on EPC function and severity in male NSTEMI patients and its possible mechanism is unclear until now. Methods We measured the circulating EPC function including migration, proliferation, and adhesion in aging or young male patients with NSTEMI. The GRACE and TIMI risk score were evaluated. Plasma levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-17 (IL-17) were also detected in all patients. Results Compared with the young group, the old male patients with NSTEMI had higher GRACE score and TIMI score and decreased function of circulating EPCs. EPC function was negatively correlated with GRACE score and TIMI score. IL-6 and IL-17 level were higher in the old group than those in the young group. There was a significant negative correlation between EPC function and IL-6 or IL-17. Moreover, IL-6 and IL-17 positively correlated with GRACE and TIMI score. Age was positively related with GRACE or TIMI score and plasma level of IL-6 or IL-17, but inversely correlated with EPC function. Conclusions The current study firstly illustrates that the age-related decrement in EPC function is related to the severity of NSTEMI in male patients, which may be connected with systemic inflammation. These findings provide novel insights into the pathogenetic mechanism and intervention target of aging NSTEMI.The level of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) decreases to a certain extent after daily meals; however, the influencing factor of this phenomenon has not been fully elucidated. This study included 447 patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). Serum levels of blood lipid parameters at 0, 2, and 4 hours (h) after a daily breakfast were monitored in all subjects. The levels of total cholesterol (TC), LDL-C, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and non-HDL-C significantly decreased, while those of triglycerides (TG) and remnant cholesterol (RC) significantly increased from baseline to 4 h in both male and female patients (P less then 0.05). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that fasting LDL-C level, the non-fasting change in RC level at 4 h and fasting TG level were significant predictors of the non-fasting change in LDL-C level at 4 h in patients with CHD, and fasting LDL-C level was the most significantly associated with the non-fasting change in LDL-C level. Patients with lower levels of fasting LDL-C had smaller non-fasting changes in LDL-C levels. When the fasting LDL-C level was less then 1.4 mmol/L, both absolute reduction and percent reduction in LDL-C level at 4 h were almost zero, which means that the non-fasting LDL-C level at 4 h was approximately equivalent to its fasting value (P less then 0.05). This result indicated that the non-fasting changes in LDL-C levels were influenced by fasting LDL-C levels in patients with CHD. Background Global work index (GWI) and global constructive work (GCW) are calculated by means of speckle tracking, blood pressure measurement, and a normalized reference curve. Their prognostic value in advanced heart failure is unknown. Methods Cardiopulmonary exercise testing and echocardiography with assessment of GWI and GCW was performed in patients with advanced heart failure caused by ischemic heart disease or dilated cardiomyopathy (n = 105). They were then followed up repeatedly. The combined endpoint was all-cause death, implantation of a left ventricular assist device, or heart transplantation. Results The median patient age was 54 years (interquartile range [IQR] 48-59.9). The mean left ventricular ejection fraction was 27.8 ± 8.2%, the median NT-proBNP was 1,210 pg/ml (IQR 435-3,696). The mean GWI was 603 ± 329 mmHg% and the mean GCW was ailure.Background Aging patients easily suffer from non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). Our previous studies revealed declined function of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) in the elderly. However, the impact of aging on EPC function and severity in male NSTEMI patients and its possible mechanism is unclear until now. Methods We measured the circulating EPC function including migration, proliferation, and adhesion in aging or young male patients with NSTEMI. The GRACE and TIMI risk score were evaluated. Plasma levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-17 (IL-17) were also detected in all patients. Results Compared with the young group, the old male patients with NSTEMI had higher GRACE score and TIMI score and decreased function of circulating EPCs. EPC function was negatively correlated with GRACE score and TIMI score. IL-6 and IL-17 level were higher in the old group than those in the young group. There was a significant negative correlation between EPC function and IL-6 or IL-17. Moreover, IL-6 and IL-17 positively correlated with GRACE and TIMI score. Age was positively related with GRACE or TIMI score and plasma level of IL-6 or IL-17, but inversely correlated with EPC function. Conclusions The current study firstly illustrates that the age-related decrement in EPC function is related to the severity of NSTEMI in male patients, which may be connected with systemic inflammation. These findings provide novel insights into the pathogenetic mechanism and intervention target of aging NSTEMI.The level of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) decreases to a certain extent after daily meals; however, the influencing factor of this phenomenon has not been fully elucidated. This study included 447 patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). Serum levels of blood lipid parameters at 0, 2, and 4 hours (h) after a daily breakfast were monitored in all subjects. The levels of total cholesterol (TC), LDL-C, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and non-HDL-C significantly decreased, while those of triglycerides (TG) and remnant cholesterol (RC) significantly increased from baseline to 4 h in both male and female patients (P less then 0.05). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that fasting LDL-C level, the non-fasting change in RC level at 4 h and fasting TG level were significant predictors of the non-fasting change in LDL-C level at 4 h in patients with CHD, and fasting LDL-C level was the most significantly associated with the non-fasting change in LDL-C level. Patients with lower levels of fasting LDL-C had smaller non-fasting changes in LDL-C levels. When the fasting LDL-C level was less then 1.4 mmol/L, both absolute reduction and percent reduction in LDL-C level at 4 h were almost zero, which means that the non-fasting LDL-C level at 4 h was approximately equivalent to its fasting value (P less then 0.05). This result indicated that the non-fasting changes in LDL-C levels were influenced by fasting LDL-C levels in patients with CHD. When the fasting LDL-C level was less then 1.4 mmol/L, the non-fasting LDL-C level could replace the fasting value to guide treatment.Background Coronary artery calcification (CAC) may provide insight to the patients' coronary artery disease (CAD) risks and influence early intervention. With increasing use of non-gated CT scans in clinical practice, the visual coronary artery scoring system (Weston Method) could quickly provide clinicians with important information of CAC for patient triage and management. Methods We retrospectively studied the available CT imaging data and estimated CAC burden using the Weston method in 493 emergency room or other hospitalized patients. The Weston scores were calculated by the sum of the score for each vessel including the left main, left anterior descending, left circumflex artery and right coronary artery (range 0-12). The primary endpoint was a composite of the major adverse cardiac events (MACEs), including cardiac death, myocardial infarction, stroke, and coronary revascularization. Results During a median follow-up of 85 months, a total of 25 (5.1%) MACE were recorded and 57 (11.2%) patients died from any causes. PAH mice were immunized with ETRQβ-002 at different time points, and the experiment lasted for 21 weeks. Hemodynamic, histological, and biochemical analyses were conducted to evaluate the long-term effects of ETRQβ-002. Results We demonstrated that the titer of the specific antibody against ETR-002 could be maintained chronically after periodic booster immunization in PAH mice. Long-term reduction of right ventricular systolic pressure and amelioration of PA remodeling by ETRQβ-002 were confirmed.

Thus, the contribution of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to age estimation of living individuals is a subject of ongoing research. In the current study, MRIs of shoulder were retrospectively collected from a modern Chinese Han population and data from 835 individuals (599 males and 236 females) in the age group 12 to 30 years were obtained. A staging technique based on (Schmidt et al. Int J Legal Med 121(4)321-324, 2007) and (Kellinghaus et al. Int J Legal Med 124(4)321-325, 2010) was used and all images were evaluated with T1-wieghted turbo spin echo (T1-TSE) sequence and T2-weighed fat suppression (T2-FS) sequence. One-sided images were assessed because data from both sides were considered coincidental, as no significant differences were found (P > 0.05). Two MRI sequences were evaluated separately and subsequently compared. Regression models and supportive vector classification (SVC) models were established accordingly. The intraobserver and interobserver agreement levels were good. Compared with T1-TSE sequence, the R2 values of T2-FS sequence were generally higher, while the mean absolute deviation (MAD) values were slightly lower. For T2-FS sequence, the MAD value was 1.49 years in males and 2.19 years in females. With two MRI sequences incorporated, the SVC model obtained with 85.7% correctly classified minors and 96.2% correctly classified adults in males, while 83.3% and 98.0% respectively in females. In conclusion, T2-FS sequence may slightly outperform the T1-TSE sequence in shoulder MRI analysis for age estimation, while shoulder MRIs could be a reliable prediction indicator for the 18-year threshold and two MRI sequences incorporated are encouraged.
    To compare the safety and durability of transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) and Laser prostatectomy (LP) among multi-morbid and elderly patients.

    Using data retrieved from the New York State Department of Health Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System and the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development, we selected cohorts of 1) multi-morbid (Charlson comorbidity index ≥ 3) and 2) elderly (aged ≥ 75) patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia who underwent laser coagulation, vaporization, enucleation, or TURP between January 2005 and December 2016. We assessed the post-operative incidence of hospital readmission and ER visit at 30 days and 90 days, complications at 90 days, and reoperation and the development of urethral stricture at 6months or longer.

    We found 12,815 and 29,806 patients in the multi-morbid and elderly cohort, respectively. Compared to LP, TURP was associated with lower odds of 90-day hospital readmission and ER visit in the multi-morbid cohort (OR 0.92, 95% CI 0.85-1.00) and higher odds in the elderly cohort (OR 1.07, 95% CI 1.01-1.14). The multi-morbid cohort showed lower odds of urinary tract infections (Ref LP, OR 0.83, 95% CI 0.73-0.93). The elderly cohort showed higher odds of experiencing hematuria (OR 1.28, 95% CI 1.03-1.59) post TURP. TURP was associated with a 19% (95% CI 0.66-1.00) and 20% (95% CI 0.71-0.91) reduced hazard of reoperation at 6months or longer for multi-morbid and elderly cohorts, respectively.

ZBTB20 was shown to be a crucial protein for the maintenance of cardiac contractile function. However, the role of ZBTB20 in cardiac response remodeling has not been elucidated. Thus, this study aimed to explore the role of ZBTB20 in cardiac remodeling following angiotensin II insult. **** were subjected to angiotensin II infusion to induce a cardiac adverse remodeling model. An adeno-associated virus (AAV) 9 system was used to deliver ZBTB20 to the mouse heart. Here, we demonstrate that ZBTB20 expression is elevated in angiotensin II-induced cardiac remodeling and in response to cardiomyocyte insults. Furthermore, AAV9-mediated overexpression of ZBTB20 caused cardiac wall hypertrophy, chamber dilation, increased fibrosis, and reduced ejection fraction. Additionally, ZBTB20 siRNA protected cardiomyocytes from angiotensin II-induced hypertrophy. Mechanistically, ZBTB20 interferes with EGFR and Akt signaling and modulates the remodeling response. Overexpression of constitutively active Akt counteracts ZBTB20 knockdown-mediated protection of adverse cardiac remodeling. This perspective summarizes the current status and emerging trends in synthesis and characterization of superatoms. The topics related to synthesis include (1) development of targeted synthesis based on transformation, (2) enhancement of robustness and synthetic yield for practical applications, and (3) development of controlled fusion and assembly of well-defined superatoms to create new properties. New characterization approaches are also introduced such as (1) mass spectrometry and laser spectroscopies in the gas phase, (2) determination of static and dynamic structures, and (3) computational analysis by machine learning. Finally, future challenges and prospects are discussed for further promotion and development of materials science of superatoms.The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a very important organelle responsible for crucial biosynthetic, sensing, and signalling functions in eukaryotic cells. In this work, we established a strategy of ligand regulation to enhance the singlet oxygen generation capacity and subcellular organelle localization ability of a rhodamine-decorated iridium(iii) complex by variation of the cyclometallating ligand. The resulting metal complex showed outstanding reactive oxygen species generation efficiency (1.6-fold higher than that of rose bengal in CH3CN) and highly specific ER localization ability, which demonstrated the promise of the metal-based photo-theranostic agent by simultaneously tuning the photochemical/physical and biological properties. Additionally, low dark cytotoxicity, high photostability and selective tumour cell uptake were featured by this complex to demonstrate it as a promising candidate in photodynamic therapy (PDT) applications. The topics related to synthesis include (1) development of targeted synthesis based on transformation, (2) enhancement of robustness and synthetic yield for practical applications, and (3) development of controlled fusion and assembly of well-defined superatoms to create new properties.     We sought to validate the association of plasma levels of urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA), its soluble receptor (SuPAR) and its inhibitor (PAI-one) with oncologic outcomes in a large cohort of patients treated with radical cystectomy (RC) for urothelial carcinoma of the bladder (UCB).

    We collected preoperative blood samples from 1,036 consecutive patients treated with RC for UCB. Plasma specimens were assessed for levels of uPA, SuPAR and PAI-one. Retrospective logistic and Cox regression analyses were performed to assess their correlation with clinical outcomes. The additional clinical net benefit provided by the biomarkers was evaluated using decision curve analysis.

    Preoperative plasma uPA, SuPAR and PAI-one levels were significantly elevated in patients harboring adverse pathological features. Higher levels of all biomarkers were independently associated with an increased risk of lymph node metastasis; uPA levels were also independently associated with ≥pT3 disease. Our objective was to perform a comparative effectiveness analysis of the bottom-up vs top-down approach.

In the bottom-up approach, the initial study was VCUG. We assumed all children with vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) received continuous antibiotic prophylaxis (CAP). Outcomes included recurrent UTI, number of VCUGs and CAP exposure. We assumed a 25% VUR prevalence in children with initial UTI with sensitivity analysis using 40% VUR prevalence.

While socioeconomic status (SES) disparities exist for access to care, less is known about the effect of SES on treatment decision-making. We sought to evaluate whether income status was associated with the treatment selected (radical prostatectomy [RP] vs radiation therapy [RT]) for nonmetastatic prostate cancer in a universal health care system.

    All men from Manitoba, Canada who were diagnosed with nonmetastatic prostate cancer between 2005 and 2016 and subsequently treated with RP or RT were identified using a provincial cancer database. SES was defined as neighborhood income by postal code and divided into income quintiles (Q1-Q5, with Q1 the lowest quintile and Q5 the highest). Multivariable logistic regression nested models were used to compare whether SES was associated with treatment type received.

    We identified 3,966 individuals who were diagnosed with nonmetastatic prostate cancer and were treated with RP (2,354) or RT (1,612).     The etiology of postmenopausal recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI) is not completely known, but the urinary microbiome is thought to be implicated. We compared the urinary microbiome in menopausal women with recurrent UTIs to age-matched controls, both in the absence of acute infection.
