  • Two studies were employed to test the reliability and validity of the Swimming Competence Questionnaire (SCQ) among primary school children. Study 1 was a cross-sectional survey in 4959 primary school children. Study 2 was a pre-post-test quasi-experiment among 1609 primary school children who underwent a 20-lesson learn-to-swim programme. In Study 1, exploratory structural equation modelling revealed excellent goodness-of-fit and scale reliability for a two-factor model comprising distance and skill factors, which supported the construct and convergent validity. SCQ scores were significantly and positively correlated with swimming outcomes (i.e., self-efficacy, intention, swimming frequency), which supported SCQ's concurrent and criterion validity. Average variance extracted for the SCQ factors exceeded cut-off criteria supporting discriminant validity. In Study 2, pre-test SCQ scores correlated significantly and positively with the SCQ scores, self-efficacy, intention, and swimming frequency at post-test, which supported SCQ's test-retest reliability and predictive validity. Positive intraclass correlation between SCQ scores and coach ratings at post-test provided evidence for SCQ's inter-rater reliability. SCQ scores significantly improved at post-test, which supported SCQ's ecological validity. In conclusion, findings indicate that the SCQ is a valid and reliable measure to assess primary school children's swimming competence, in terms of swimming distance and basic water survival skills.Background. Plantar pressure data from 9 experienced heel-to-toe male runners was collected before and after a 30-minute run on a treadmill at a speed 5% above the respiratory compensation point (RCP) of each participant. Significant changes in the plantar-pressure map were found post-run, including increased impulses in the first metatarsal head (9.92%, p less then  0.001) and hallux areas (16.19%, p less then  0.001), and decreased impulses in the fourth and fifth metatarsal heads (4.95%, p less then  0.05). The CoP curve showed a medial shift (p less then  0.01). The plantar-pressure map and CoP trajectory were altered following a 30-minute exhausting run. These changes may indicate an increase in stress on joints and tissues when individuals are fatigued and may promote overload injuries.Zika virus is part of the flaviviruses that spread through the Aedes mosquito species and causes neurological infectious diseases. The non-structural protein 1 (NS1) is an essential enzyme that is involved in the replication of Zika virus. In this study, the newly isolated flavonoid analogs were docked against the NS1 protein. Most of the compounds showed strong interactions with favorable binding energies in the active site of NS1. One of the suitable docked ligand-protein complexes was simulated along with the apo form of the enzyme for 100 ns. The simulation results validated the docking data. The molecular dynamics simulation analysis comprising of root mean square deviation and fluctuation, the radius of gyration, hydrogen bonding, potential energy, principle component analysis, and MM/PBSA revealed about the stability of the apo and complex systems. These flavonoids analogs can inhibit the hexamerization of the NS1 which is necessary for the Zika virus replication.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.We performed a retrospective study to evaluate clinical effectiveness of vancomycin loading strategy and factors associated with achieving optimal Cmin. Patients administered vancomycin for ≥72 h from January to June 2018 were enrolled. Patients were divided into two groups loading (LD) and non-loading (NLD). LD was defined as initial vancomycin dose ≥20 mg/kg and ≥120% of maintenance dose. During study period, 70 and 71 received initial LD (24.2 ± 2.5 mg/kg) and NLD (17.3 ± 3.3 mg/kg) doses of vancomycin, respectively (p  less then  .001). Achievement of optimal Cmin was not different before administration of the third dose (24.4% in LD versus 18.2% in NLD, p = .484) and within 72 h (22.9% versus 28.2%, p = .759). Risk factors for failure to achieve optimal Cmin before administration of the third dose were higher creatinine clearance and higher level of serum albumin. Therefore, more sufficient loading or patient-specific dose strategies should be used to achieve optimal serum vancomycin Cmin.

  • Objectives Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is thought to complicate pain management outcomes, which is consistent with the impact of other psychosocial factors in the biopsychosocial model of pain. This study aimed to identify patient sociodemographic and clinical characteristics associated with PTSD prevalence among veterans of Operations Enduring Freedom/Iraqi Freedom/New Dawn (OEF/OIF/OND) who received Veterans Affairs (VA) chiropractic care. Methods A cross-sectional analysis of electronic health record data from a national cohort study of OEF/OIF/OND veterans with at least 1 visit to a VA chiropractic clinic from 2001 to 2014 was performed. The primary outcome measure was a prior PTSD diagnosis. Variables including sex, race, age, body mass index, pain intensity, alcohol and substance use disorders, and smoking status were examined in association with PTSD diagnosis using logistic regression. Results We identified 14,025 OEF/OIF/OND veterans with at least 1 VA chiropractic visit, with a mean age of 38 years and 54.2% having a diagnosis of PTSD. Male sex (adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 1.23, 95% CI = 1.11-1.37), younger age (OR = 0.99, CI = 0.98-0.99), moderate-to-severe pain intensity (numerical rating scale ≥ 4) (OR = 1.72, CI = 1.59-1.87), body mass index ≥ 30 (OR = 1.34, CI = 1.24-1.45), current smoking (OR = 1.32, CI = 1.20-1.44), and having an alcohol or substance use disorder (OR = 4.51, CI = 4.01-5.08) were significantly associated with a higher likelihood of PTSD diagnosis. Conclusion Post-traumatic stress disorder is a common comorbidity among OEF/OIF/OND veterans receiving VA chiropractic care and is significantly associated with several patient characteristics. Recognition of these factors is important for the appropriate diagnosis and management of veterans with PTSD seeking chiropractic treatment for pain conditions.Objective The purpose of this paper is to describe the rapid deployment of telehealth, particularly real time video conference, for chiropractic services as a response to COVID-19. Methods Two health centers at 2 campuses of a large California corporation have chiropractic care integrated into physical medicine services. Care was suspended beginning on March 17, 2020 to prevent spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) among patients and staff. On March 19, the Governor of California issued a stay at home order. With musculoskeletal problems being common in the employee patient population, telehealth services were quickly developed to continue chiropractic care for patients. Using existing infrastructure, several members of the health center team developed chiropractic telehealth operations within 2 days. Results Musculoskeletal telehealth services included examinations, risk assessment, advice, and rehabilitative exercises. These telehealth visits facilitated care that would have otherwise been unavailable to employees. Patients reported that the appointments were helpful, addressed their concerns, and provided a safe method to see their doctor. Regular interprofessional teamwork and relations between the clinic operator and client company were key contributors to operationalizing this service in our integrated healthcare environment. Conclusion We were able to quickly implement real time video conferencing and other forms of telehealth for chiropractic services at 2 worksite health centers. This paper includes information and insights to providers about setting up similar telehealth systems so they may also provide this benefit for patients in their communities during pandemics or disasters.ICER corresponds to a group of alternatively spliced Inducible cAMP Early Repressors with high similarity, but multiple roles, including in circadian rhythm, and are involved in attenuation of cAMP-dependent gene expression. We present experimental and in silico data revealing biological differences between the isoforms with exon gamma (ICER) or without it (ICERγ). Both isoforms are expressed in the liver and the adrenal glands and can derive from differential splicing. In adrenals the expression is circadian, with maximum at ZT12 and higher amplitude of Icerγ. Data are in favour of ICERγ as the physiologically important form in hepatic cells where weaker binding of repressor might be preferred in guiding the cAMP-dependent response.There are two commercially available transcatheter heart valve systems balloon expandable valves (BEV) and self-expanding valves (SEV). However, there is a paucity of randomized trials comparing both systems. Electronic databases (Medline, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and clinicaltrials.gov) and major conference proceedings were searched for randomized trials of patients with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis and received transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) with a SEV or BEV or surgical aortic valve replacement. The main efficacy outcomes were all-cause mortality and stroke at the longest available follow-up. The main analysis was performed using a random-effects network meta-analysis complemented by several subgroup and sensitivity analyses. Ten trials with 9,439 patients (mostly undergoing transfemoral TAVI) were included. At a median of 27 months, there was no difference between BEV and SEV valves in terms of all-cause mortality (odds ratio [OR] 1.05, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.79 to 1.42). The incidence of any stroke was higher with BEV (OR 1.51, 95% CI 1.01 to 2.26), but there was no difference in the incidence of disabling stroke. At 30-days, BEV valves were associated with lower incidence of new permanent pacemaker placement (OR 0.50, 95% CI 0.32 to 0.79) and moderate/severe paravalvular regurgitation (OR 0.39, 95% CI 0.22 to 0.68). In conclusion, in patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis undergoing transfemoral TAVI, SEV and BEV were associated with similar all-cause mortality. BEV were associated with a higher incidence of any stroke driven by nondisabling strokes, but lower incidence of new permanent pacemaker placement and moderate/severe paravalvular regurgitation compared with SEV.

  • Conclusion Secondary PD after prior gastrectomy remains challenging, with higher EBL and rate of transfusion. However, when performed by experienced surgeons, the patients with or without previous gastrectomy show comparable postoperative clinical outcomes, such as similar duration of postoperative hospital stay and rate of postoperative pancreatic fistula. Copyright © 2020, the Korean Surgical Society.Purpose Intrahepatic recurrence has a significant effect on the survival of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. We aimed to determine if there are useful indicators in predicting the recurrence of liver cancer after a hepatic resection. Methods We retrospectively reviewed medical records of 210 HCC patients who underwent hepatectomy between January 2009 and December 2015. We examined clinic-pathological variables comparing 2 groups of HCC patients, either intrahepatic recurrence or not. Results We divided 184 patients into 2 groups; 94 patients (51.1%) with intrahepatic recurrence and 90 patients (48.9%) without intrahepatic recurrence. Multivariate analysis showed operation type, preoperative α-FP, postoperative protein induced by vitamin K absence-II (PIVKA-II) elevation, and multiple tumor number were closely associated with intrahepatic recurrence. The preoperative PIVKA-II level was not statistically significant in postoperative intrahepatic recurrence rate. The recurrence rate was 46.2% in 132 of 184 cases of α-FP 200 ng/mL was 38 of 184 cases, 21 of which recurred (55.3%). According to the multivariate analysis, OR ratio was 8.003 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.549-41.353) in the α-FP 100-200 ng/mL group and 1.867 (95% CI, 0.784-4.444) in α-FP 200 ng/mL or higher group (P = 0.013). Three-year survival rate of intrahepatic recurrence patients was 80.7%, 3-year survival rate of no intrahepatic recurrence patients was 95.0%. Conclusion The intrahepatic recurrence rates were high in the group preop α-FP over 100 ng/mL. Close observation is needed. Prospective study for α-FP genes of HCC patients should be planned for predicting intrahepatic recurrence after hepatectomy. The patient died few weeks later. Conclusion This case was an opportunity for us to review RSHM. This type of metastasis seems to be an early event, in the context of advanced stage HCC with elevated protein induced by vitamin K absence-II (PIVKA II). The Lee nomogram is useful in detecting patients at high risk of developing RSHM. Sudden onset of a tonic-clonic seizure for a few minutes with agitation, and neck stiffness on physical examination were noted. Lumbar puncture was performed and xanthochromic turbid cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was retrieved. CSF analysis showed pleocytosis with a white blood cell count of 4608/cm2; the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio was 964. The CSF also showed extreme hypoglycorrhachia (4 mg/dL) and high protein levels (865 mg/dL) were noted. Bacterial me results can also lead to the successful outcome without neurologic deficits. Prevotella bivia is a member of a nonpigment group found in the resident flora of the female genital tract and it is occasionally seen in the oral cavity. Case report We describe the very rare case of a 39-year-old woman with fulminant generalized peritonitis secondary to purulent salpingitis caused by Prevotella bivia. Discussion In most cases described in the literature, Prevotella bivia was mixed with aerobes and caused bacterial vaginosis and pelvic inflammatory disease, whereas in our case study Prevotella bivia was the only microbe that was isolated. The infection was fulminant and caused generalized peritonitis. Rapid and systemic infections typically occur in immunocompromised hosts, however our patient was in good health condition and immunocompetent. Conclusions Prevotella bivia may cause rapid and systemic infections, even in immunocompetent hosts.
    Conclusion Secondary PD after prior gastrectomy remains challenging, with higher EBL and rate of transfusion. However, when performed by experienced surgeons, the patients with or without previous gastrectomy show comparable postoperative clinical outcomes, such as similar duration of postoperative hospital stay and rate of postoperative pancreatic fistula. Copyright © 2020, the Korean Surgical Society.Purpose Intrahepatic recurrence has a significant effect on the survival of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. We aimed to determine if there are useful indicators in predicting the recurrence of liver cancer after a hepatic resection. Methods We retrospectively reviewed medical records of 210 HCC patients who underwent hepatectomy between January 2009 and December 2015. We examined clinic-pathological variables comparing 2 groups of HCC patients, either intrahepatic recurrence or not. Results We divided 184 patients into 2 groups; 94 patients (51.1%) with intrahepatic recurrence and 90 patients (48.9%) without intrahepatic recurrence. Multivariate analysis showed operation type, preoperative α-FP, postoperative protein induced by vitamin K absence-II (PIVKA-II) elevation, and multiple tumor number were closely associated with intrahepatic recurrence. The preoperative PIVKA-II level was not statistically significant in postoperative intrahepatic recurrence rate. The recurrence rate was 46.2% in 132 of 184 cases of α-FP 200 ng/mL was 38 of 184 cases, 21 of which recurred (55.3%). According to the multivariate analysis, OR ratio was 8.003 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.549-41.353) in the α-FP 100-200 ng/mL group and 1.867 (95% CI, 0.784-4.444) in α-FP 200 ng/mL or higher group (P = 0.013). Three-year survival rate of intrahepatic recurrence patients was 80.7%, 3-year survival rate of no intrahepatic recurrence patients was 95.0%. Conclusion The intrahepatic recurrence rates were high in the group preop α-FP over 100 ng/mL. Close observation is needed. Prospective study for α-FP genes of HCC patients should be planned for predicting intrahepatic recurrence after hepatectomy. In adolescents and adults with AN, studies have demonstrated a nutritionally acquired GH resistance with low IGF-I levels despite high concentrations of GH. IGF-I levels go up with increasing body weight, and are associated with rising levels of bone turnover markers. In short-term studies lasting 6-10 days, recombinant human IGF-I (rhIGF-I) administration in physiologic replacement doses normalized IGF-I levels and increased levels of bone formation markers in both adults and adolescents with AN. In a randomized controlled trial in adults with AN in which participants were randomized to one of four arms (i) rhIGF-I with oral estrogen-progesterone (EP), (ii) rhIGF-I alone, (iii) EP alone, or (iv) neither for 9 months, a significant increase in bone formation markers was noted in the groups that received rhIGF-I, and a significant decrease in bone resorption markers in the groups that received EP. The group that received both rhIGF-I and EP had a significant increase in bone density at the spine and hip compared to the group that received neither. Clinical studies show that the natural product fumagillin, and its analogs are potential inhibitors of MetAP2. However, due to their poor pharmacokinetic properties and neurotoxicities in clinical studies, their further developments have received a great setback. Here, we apply structure-based virtual screening and molecular dynamics methods to identify a new class of potential inhibitors for MetAP2. We screened Otava's Chemical Library, which consists of about 3 200 000 tangible-chemical compounds, and meticulously selected the top 10 of these compounds based on their inhibitory potentials against MetAP2. The top hit compounds subjected to ADMET predictor using 3 independent ADMET prediction programs, were found to be drug-like. To examine the stability of ligand binding mode, and efficacy, the unbound form of MetAP2, its complexes with fumagillin, spiroepoxytriazole, and the best promising compounds compound-3369841 and compound-3368818 were submitted to 100 ns molecular dynamics simulation. Like fumagillin, spiroepoxytriazole, and both compound-3369841 and compound-3368818 showed stable binding mode over time during the simulations. Taken together, these uninherited-fumagillin compounds may serve as new class of inhibitors or provide scaffolds for further optimization towards the design of more potent MetAP2 inhibitors -development of such inhibitors would be essential strategy against various cancer types.

  • Participants consumed most of their COVID-19 information via "Internet, online newspapers, social networks". Our findings indicate an urgency to re-design training programs and communication activities for a more effective dissemination of information related to the COVID-19 epidemic or epidemics in general.Background The negative effects of sedentary behavior (SB) on public health have been extensively documented. A large number of studies have demonstrated that high prevalence of SB is a critical factor of all-cause mortality. Globally, the frequency of SB research has continued to rise, but little is known about SB in the Chinese population. Therefore, this review was conducted to scope the research situation and to fill the gaps related to the effects of SB in the Chinese population. Methods Using a scoping review based on York methodology, a comprehensive search of published journal articles and grey literature was carried out through 12 databases. The literature research was conducted by two authors in July 2019, and included journal articles that targeted on the Chinese population were published between 1999 and 2019. The two authors screened the records independently and included those research topics related to SB in the Chinese population. Results The number of included studies increased from 1 to 29 ps were focused on children and adolescents, while only a few studies investigated infants/toddlers and older adults. Both female and male were examined in most studies, and non-clinical populations were investigated in the context of SB in a relatively large number of studies. Conclusions The number of research articles on SB in the Chinese population published per year has increased year by year, indicating a growing interest in this research area. More studies using population subgroup samples are needed, particularly among infants/toddlers, older adults, and clinical populations. To provide stronger evidence of the determinants and outcomes of SB, longitudinal studies using device-based measures of SB are required.Hemangiosarcomas (HSA) are common neoplasms of dogs that often metastasize and are typically fatal. Recently it was demonstrated that thalidomide extends the survival time of dogs with HSA, potentially due to thalidomide-induced inhibition of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) production by the neoplastic cells. To investigate this, immunostaining was used to evaluate VEGF within HSA metastases that developed after thalidomide treatment. The immunostaining was then compared to VEGF immunostaining in primary tumors from the same dogs prior to treatment with thalidomide and in metastatic tumors from untreated dogs with splenic HSA. Immunostaining was scored from 1 to 4 for each sample. Immunostaining in the metastatic lesions that had been treated with thalidomide had a mean immunostaining score of 1.4 which was significantly lower than the mean score in the corresponding primary splenic HSA (3.8, p = 0.02) and in metastases from untreated dogs (3.5, p = 0.02). This supports the hypothesis that thalidomide prolongs survival time in dogs with HSA due to inhibition of VEGF production by the neoplastic cells. As VEGF remained visible within HSAs exposed to thalidomide, additional treatments to inhibit VEGF production may further prolong survival times of dogs with these common canine neoplasms.Technology innovation in sanitation is needed for the 4.2 billion people worldwide, lacking safely managed sanitation services. A major requirement for the adoption of these technologies is the management of malodor around toilet and treatment systems. There is an unmet need for a low-cost instrumented technology for detecting the onset of sanitation malodor and triggering corrective actions. This study combines sensory data with low-cost gas sensor data on malodor emanating from feces. The response of 10 commercial electrochemical gas sensors was collected alongside olfactometric measurements. Odor from fecal specimens at different relevant dilution as well as specimens with pleasant odors as a control were evaluated for a total of 64 responses. Several of the sensors responded positively to the fecal odor, with the formaldehyde, hydrogen sulfide, and ammonia sensors featuring the highest signal to noise ratio. A positive trend was observed between the sensors' responses and the concentration of the odorant and with odor intensity, but no clear correspondence with dilution to threshold (D/T) values was found. Through XRD analysis, it was found that the CH crystals are more prone to grow along the (0001) plane with larger size in the paste with nano-C-S-H addition before the induction period starts, because the C-S-H nanoparticles can form 3D network to slow down the diffusion rate of the released ions and eliminate the convection in the paste, thus suppress the 3D nucleation and growth of the CH crystals.

Our findings indicate an urgency to re-design training programs and communication activities for a more effective dissemination of information related to the COVID-19 epidemic or epidemics in general.Background The negative effects of sedentary behavior (SB) on public health have been extensively documented. A large number of studies have demonstrated that high prevalence of SB is a critical factor of all-cause mortality. Globally, the frequency of SB research has continued to rise, but little is known about SB in the Chinese population. Therefore, this review was conducted to scope the research situation and to fill the gaps related to the effects of SB in the Chinese population. Methods Using a scoping review based on York methodology, a comprehensive search of published journal articles and grey literature was carried out through 12 databases. The literature research was conducted by two authors in July 2019, and included journal articles that targeted on the Chinese population were published between 1999 and 2019. The two authors screened the records independently and included those research topics related to SB in the Chinese population. Results The number of included studies increased from 1 to 29 ps were focused on children and adolescents, while only a few studies investigated infants/toddlers and older adults. Both female and male were examined in most studies, and non-clinical populations were investigated in the context of SB in a relatively large number of studies. Conclusions The number of research articles on SB in the Chinese population published per year has increased year by year, indicating a growing interest in this research area. More studies using population subgroup samples are needed, particularly among infants/toddlers, older adults, and clinical populations. To provide stronger evidence of the determinants and outcomes of SB, longitudinal studies using device-based measures of SB are required.Hemangiosarcomas (HSA) are common neoplasms of dogs that often metastasize and are typically fatal. Recently it was demonstrated that thalidomide extends the survival time of dogs with HSA, potentially due to thalidomide-induced inhibition of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) production by the neoplastic cells. To investigate this, immunostaining was used to evaluate VEGF within HSA metastases that developed after thalidomide treatment. The immunostaining was then compared to VEGF immunostaining in primary tumors from the same dogs prior to treatment with thalidomide and in metastatic tumors from untreated dogs with splenic HSA. Immunostaining was scored from 1 to 4 for each sample. Immunostaining in the metastatic lesions that had been treated with thalidomide had a mean immunostaining score of 1.4 which was significantly lower than the mean score in the corresponding primary splenic HSA (3.8, p = 0.02) and in metastases from untreated dogs (3.5, p = 0.02). This supports the hypothesis that thalidomide prolongs survival time in dogs with HSA due to inhibition of VEGF production by the neoplastic cells. As VEGF remained visible within HSAs exposed to thalidomide, additional treatments to inhibit VEGF production may further prolong survival times of dogs with these common canine neoplasms.Technology innovation in sanitation is needed for the 4.2 billion people worldwide, lacking safely managed sanitation services. A major requirement for the adoption of these technologies is the management of malodor around toilet and treatment systems. There is an unmet need for a low-cost instrumented technology for detecting the onset of sanitation malodor and triggering corrective actions. This study combines sensory data with low-cost gas sensor data on malodor emanating from feces. The response of 10 commercial electrochemical gas sensors was collected alongside olfactometric measurements. Odor from fecal specimens at different relevant dilution as well as specimens with pleasant odors as a control were evaluated for a total of 64 responses. Several of the sensors responded positively to the fecal odor, with the formaldehyde, hydrogen sulfide, and ammonia sensors featuring the highest signal to noise ratio. A positive trend was observed between the sensors' responses and the concentration of the odorant and with odor intensity, but no clear correspondence with dilution to threshold (D/T) values was found. In this study we investigated what role RIP1 plays in human ovarian cancer cells. We showed that knockout (KO) of RIP1 substantially suppressed cell proliferation, accompanied by the G2/M checkpoint arrest in two human ovarian cancer cell lines SKOV3 and A2780. On the other hand, RIP1 KO remarkably attenuated cisplatin-induced cytotoxicity, which was associated with reduction of the apoptosis markers PARP cleavage and the necroptosis marker phospho-MLKL. We found that RIP1 KO suppressed cisplatin-induced ROS accumulation in both SKOV3 and A2780 cells. ROS scavenger BHA, apoptosis inhibitor Z-VAD or necroptosis inhibitor NSA could effectively suppress cisplatin's cytotoxicity in the control cells, suggesting that ROS-mediated apoptosis and necroptosis were involved in cisplatin-induced cell death. In addition, blocking necroptosis with MLKL siRNA effectively attenuated cisplatin-induced cytotoxicity. The timing and composition of chondritic and cometary deliveries to Earth has remained enigmatic due to the paucity of reliable measurements of cometary material. This work uses recently measured volatile elemental ratios and noble gas isotope data from comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko (67P/C-G), in combination with chondritic data from the literature, to reconstruct the composition of Earth's ancient atmosphere. Comets are found to have contributed ~20% of atmospheric heavy noble gases (i.e., Kr and Xe) but limited amounts of other volatile elements (water, halogens and likely organic materials) to Earth. These cometary noble gases were likely mixed with chondritic - and not solar - sources to form the atmosphere. We show that an ancient atmosphere composed of chondritic and cometary volatiles is more enriched in Xe relative to the modern atmosphere, requiring that 8-12 times the present-day inventory of Xe was lost to space. This potentially resolves the long-standing mystery of Earth's "missing xenon", with regards to both Xe elemental depletion and isotopic fractionation in the atmosphere. The inferred Kr/H2O and Xe/H2O of the initial atmosphere suggest that Earth's surface volatiles might not have been fully delivered by the late accretion of volatile-rich carbonaceous chondrites. Instead, "dry" materials akin to enstatite chondrites potentially constituted a significant source of chondritic volatiles now residing on the Earth's surface. We outline the working hypotheses, implications and limitations of this model in the last section of this contribution.

  • PURPOSE Intraoperative hyperglycemia is associated with infectious complications in general surgery patients. This study aimed to determine if the use of lactated Ringer's (LR) carrier solution during hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) would lower the incidence of intraoperative hyperglycemia and improve postoperative outcomes when compared with a standard 1.5% dextrose peritoneal dialysate carrier solution. PATIENTS AND METHODS This is a retrospective cohort study of 134 patients who underwent HIPEC at the University of Colorado. Perioperative glucose levels and outcomes were compared between patients who were perfused with 1.5% dextrose peritoneal dialysate carrier solution (n = 68) versus LR carrier solution (n = 66). RESULTS The study population consisted of patients undergoing HIPEC for appendiceal (50%), colorectal (34%), mesothelioma (8%), and ovarian cancer (5%). Intraoperative severe hyperglycemia (glucose ≥ 180 mg/dL) was significantly more common among patients perfused with a dextrose-containing carrier solution versus those perfused with LR (88% vs. 21%; p  less then  0.001). Patients in the dextrose cohort had significantly more severe complications (39% vs. 12%; p = 0.034), infectious complications (35% vs. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/necrostatin-1.html 15%; p = 0.011), and organ space infections (18% vs. 5% p = 0.026) than the LR cohort. On multivariable analysis, dextrose-containing carrier solution was significantly associated with an increased risk of postoperative infectious complications (HR 5.16; p = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS Intraoperative hyperglycemia is common when dextrose-containing carrier solution is used during HIPEC, and severe intraoperative hyperglycemia is strongly associated with an increased risk for infectious of complications following HIPEC. It is correct as reflected here.Although it is often assumed that electronic gaming machines (EGMs) are associated with the highest level of risk, it has proved difficult to find reliable evidence in support of this proposition. In this paper, we analysed statistics from major Australian community prevalence studies for the period 2011-2020 to investigate whether EGMs (in comparison to racing and casino table games) have a stronger association with problem gambling. All prevalence studies reviewed used telephone sampling and the Problem Gambling Severity Index to assess problem gambling. In this paper, we examine the principal hypothesis using several lines of evidence, including whether problem gamblers are more likely to gamble and gamble regularly on EGMs as opposed to racing and casino games and if the EGM-problem gambling association was maintained after controlling for other forms of participation. Results showed that of all gambling activities, EGMs do appear to have the strongest association with problem gambling. Despite having a disproportionately higher level of participation on racing and casino games as compared with other gamblers, problem gamblers are more likely to report regular or weekly participation in EGM gambling and this may be the reason why this activity emerges most strongly as a predictor of problem gambling in multivariate models. This finding is particularly salient, given the very high prevalence of EGM participation, compared to other risky gambling forms. The findings underscore the importance of survey reporting that presents results in a form that can inform policy relevant research relating to the potential impact of different gambling activities.A large contemporary UK cohort study, the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, was used to investigate gambling behavior and to explore the antecedents of regular gambling in the 17-24-year age group. Participants completed computer-administered gambling surveys in research clinics, on paper, and online. The sample sizes were 3566 at age 17 years, 3940 at 20 years, and 3841 at 24 years; only 1672 completed all three surveys. Participation in gambling in the last year was reported by 54% of 17-year-olds, rising to 68% at 20 years, and 66% at 24 years, with little overall variance. Regular (weekly) gambling showed a strong gender effect, increasing among young men from 13% at 17 years to 18% at 20 years, and 17% at 24 years. Although gambling frequency increased between the ages of 17 and 20 years, gambling behaviors showed little variance between 20 and 24 years, except online gambling and betting on horseraces. The commonest forms of gambling were playing scratchcards, playing the lottery, and private betting with friends. Gambling on activities via the internet increased markedly between 17 and 24 years, especially among males. In the fully adjusted model, individual antecedents of regular gambling were being male, and having a low IQ, an external locus of control, and high sensation seeking scores. Parental gambling behavior and maternal educational background were associated with regular gambling in both sexes. Regular gambling was associated with smoking cigarettes and frequent and harmful use of alcohol, but no associations with depression were found.Gambling opportunities are facilitated by the growth of the Internet and social media platforms. Digital games also increasingly include monetary features, such as microtransactions, blurring the line between gambling and gaming. The Internet provides a variety of virtual communities for gamblers and gamers, but comprehensive research on these communities and their relevance in gambling and monetary gaming behaviors remains scarce. This paper summarizes research of online gambling and monetary gaming communities based on a systematic literature review. A systematic literature search was conducted from five databases Scopus, Web of Science, PsycINFO, Social Science Premium Collection, and EBSCOhost. The search was limited to empirical articles that focused on gambling or gaming involving money and examined online interaction between gamblers or gamers. Preliminary search resulted in 1056 articles, from which 55 were selected for the analyses based on pre-determined criteria. According to results, online communities serve different functions in gambling and gaming behaviors.

In this paper, we examine the principal hypothesis using several lines of evidence, including whether problem gamblers are more likely to gamble and gamble regularly on EGMs as opposed to racing and casino games and if the EGM-problem gambling association was maintained after controlling for other forms of participation. Results showed that of all gambling activities, EGMs do appear to have the strongest association with problem gambling. Despite having a disproportionately higher level of participation on racing and casino games as compared with other gamblers, problem gamblers are more likely to report regular or weekly participation in EGM gambling and this may be the reason why this activity emerges most strongly as a predictor of problem gambling in multivariate models. This finding is particularly salient, given the very high prevalence of EGM participation, compared to other risky gambling forms. The findings underscore the importance of survey reporting that presents results in a form that can inform policy relevant research relating to the potential impact of different gambling activities.A large contemporary UK cohort study, the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, was used to investigate gambling behavior and to explore the antecedents of regular gambling in the 17-24-year age group. Participants completed computer-administered gambling surveys in research clinics, on paper, and online. The sample sizes were 3566 at age 17 years, 3940 at 20 years, and 3841 at 24 years; only 1672 completed all three surveys. Participation in gambling in the last year was reported by 54% of 17-year-olds, rising to 68% at 20 years, and 66% at 24 years, with little overall variance. Regular (weekly) gambling showed a strong gender effect, increasing among young men from 13% at 17 years to 18% at 20 years, and 17% at 24 years. Although gambling frequency increased between the ages of 17 and 20 years, gambling behaviors showed little variance between 20 and 24 years, except online gambling and betting on horseraces. The commonest forms of gambling were playing scratchcards, playing the lottery, and private betting with friends. Gambling on activities via the internet increased markedly between 17 and 24 years, especially among males. In the fully adjusted model, individual antecedents of regular gambling were being male, and having a low IQ, an external locus of control, and high sensation seeking scores. Parental gambling behavior and maternal educational background were associated with regular gambling in both sexes. Regular gambling was associated with smoking cigarettes and frequent and harmful use of alcohol, but no associations with depression were found.Gambling opportunities are facilitated by the growth of the Internet and social media platforms. Digital games also increasingly include monetary features, such as microtransactions, blurring the line between gambling and gaming. The Internet provides a variety of virtual communities for gamblers and gamers, but comprehensive research on these communities and their relevance in gambling and monetary gaming behaviors remains scarce. This paper summarizes research of online gambling and monetary gaming communities based on a systematic literature review. A systematic literature search was conducted from five databases Scopus, Web of Science, PsycINFO, Social Science Premium Collection, and EBSCOhost. The search was limited to empirical articles that focused on gambling or gaming involving money and examined online interaction between gamblers or gamers. Preliminary search resulted in 1056 articles, from which 55 were selected for the analyses based on pre-determined criteria. According to results, online communities serve different functions in gambling and gaming behaviors.

Methods This is a two-center study of patients' post-radiofrequency ablation of dysplastic BE. After BET, jumbo (Boston Scientific©, Radial Jaw 4, opening diameter 2.8 mm) or standard (Boston Scientific©, Radial Jaw 4, opening diameter 2.2 mm) biopsy forceps were utilized to obtain surveillance biopsies from the neo-squamous epithelium. Presence of lamina propria and proportion of squamous epithelium with partial or full thickness lamina propria was recorded by two experienced gastrointestinal pathologists who were blinded. Squamous epithelial biopsies that contained at least two-thirds of lamina propria were considered 'adequate'. Results In a total of 211 biopsies from 55 BE patients, 145 biopsies (29 patients, 18 males, mean age 61 years, interquartile range [IQR] 33-83) were obtained using jumbo forceps and 66 biopsies (26 patients, all males, mean age 65 years, IQR 56-76) using standard forceps biopsies. Comparing jumbo versus standard forceps, the proportion of specimens with any subepithelial lamina propria was 51.7% versus 53%, P = 0.860 and the presence of adequate subepithelial lamina propria was 17.9% versus 9.1%, P = 0.096 respectively. Conclusions Use of jumbo forceps does not appear to have added advantage over standard forceps to obtain adequate biopsy specimens from the neo-squamous mucosa post-ablation.Motivation An essential part of drug discovery is the accurate prediction of the binding affinity of new compound-protein pairs. Most of the standard computational methods assume that compounds or proteins of the test data are observed during the training phase. However, in real-world situations, the test and training data are sampled from different domains with different distributions. To cope with this challenge, we propose a deep learning-based approach that consists of three steps. In the first step, the training encoder network learns a novel representation of compounds and proteins. To this end, we combine convolutional layers and LSTM layers so that the occurrence patterns of local substructures through a protein and a compound sequence are learned. Also, to encode the interaction strength of the protein and compound substructures, we propose a two-sided attention mechanism. In the second phase, to deal with the different distributions of the training and test domains, a feature encoder network is learned for the test domain by utilizing an adversarial domain adaptation approach. In the third phase, the learned test encoder network is applied to new compound-protein pairs to predict their binding affinity. Results To evaluate the proposed approach, we applied it to KIBA, Davis, and BindingDB datasets. The results show that the proposed method learns a more reliable model for the test domain in more challenging situations. We aimed to study clinical performance, correlation and agreement of RV strain by these techniques, using arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) as a model for RV disease. Methods and results We enrolled 110 subjects, including 34 patients with definite ARVC, 30 preclinical relatives of ARVC patients, and 46 healthy control subjects. Global and regional RV longitudinal peak strain (PS) were measured by STE and FT-CMR. Both modalities showed reduced strain values in ARVC patients compared to ARVC relatives (STE global PS P less then 0.001; FT-CMR global PS P less then 0.001) and reduced strain values in ARVC relatives compared to healthy control subjects (STE global PS P = 0.042; FT-CMR global PS P = 0.084). There was a moderate, albeit significant correlation between RV strain values obtained by STE and FT-CMR [global PS r = 0.578 (95% confidence interval 0.427-0.697), P less then 0.001]. Topiramate was started at a dosage of 25 mg by mouth twice daily and after 3 weeks titrated to a dosage of 100 mg by mouth twice daily for maintenance therapy. After initiation of topiramate therapy, the patient began to experience an immediate change in her carbonation perception when drinking carbonated beverages; all carbonated beverages, including seltzer and beer, tasted "flat." The patient remained on topiramate for the subsequent 12 months without her carbonation perception returning to normal but noted that drinking carbonated beverages through straws slightly mitigated the adverse effect.

  • Patients on peritoneal dialysis are at risk of developing peritoneal fibrosis and angiogenesis, which can lead to dysfunction of the peritoneal membrane. Recent evidence has identified cross-talk between transforming growth factor beta (TGFB) and the WNT/β-catenin pathway to induce fibrosis and angiogenesis. Limited evidence exists describing the role of non-canonical WNT signalling in peritoneal membrane injury. Non-canonical WNT5A is suggested to have different effects depending on the receptor environment. WNT5A has been implicated in antagonizing canonical WNT/β-catenin signalling in the presence of receptor tyrosine kinase-like orphan receptor (Ror2). We co-expressed TGFB and WNT5A using adenovirus and examined its role in the development of peritoneal fibrosis and angiogenesis. Treatment of mouse peritoneum with AdWNT5A decreased the submesothelial thickening and angiogenesis induced by AdTGFB. WNT5A appeared to block WNT/β-catenin signalling by inhibiting phosphorylation of glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (GSK3B) and reducing levels of total β-catenin and target proteins. To examine the function of Ror2, we silenced Ror2 in a human mesothelial cell line. We treated cells with AdWNT5A and observed a significant increase in fibronectin compared with AdWNT5A alone. We also analysed fibronectin and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in a TGFB model of mesothelial cell injury. Both fibronectin and VEGF were significantly increased in response to Ror2 silencing when cells were exposed to TGFB. Our results suggest that WNT5A inhibits peritoneal injury and this is associated with a decrease in WNT/β-catenin signalling. Tumour cells often develop resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs, which seriously affects the efficacy of chemotherapy. GPR30 is a novel oestrogen receptor that is involved in the invasion, metastasis and drug resistance of many tumours. Targeting GPR30 has been shown to increase the drug sensitivity of breast cancer cells. However, few studies have investigated the role of GPR30 in gastric cancer. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) has been shown to be associated with the development of chemotherapeutic drug resistance. In this study, we demonstrated that GPR30 is involved in cisplatin resistance by promoting EMT in gastric cancer. GPR30 knockdown resulted in increased sensitivity of different gastric cancer (GC) cells to cisplatin and alterations in the epithelial/mesenchymal markers. Furthermore, G15 significantly enhanced the cisplatin sensitivity of GC cells while G1 inhibited this phenomenon. In addition, EMT occurred when AGS and ****823 were treated with cisplatin. Down-regulation of GPR30 with G15 inhibited this transformation, while G1 promoted it. Taken together, these results revealed the role of GPR30 in the formation of cisplatin resistance, suggesting that targeting GPR30 signalling may be a potential strategy for improving the efficacy of chemotherapy in gastric cancer. © 2020 The Authors. There have been sporadic reports focused on the preoperative usage of BTA complementing plastic surgery. We briefly summarize the current experience of BTA complementing plastic surgery in China based on clinical experience. METHODS We reported a brief review of the preoperative use of BTA as an accessory to plastic surgery (blepharoplasty, chin augmentation, mandibular angle ostectomy, rhinoplasty, hyaluronic acid fillers injection for wrinkle reduction) based on previous studies and our experience. RESULTS Preoperative treatment with BTA in plastic surgery helps surgeons operate and results in better cosmetic results. CONCLUSIONS Preoperative BTA treatment can reduce the occurrence of surgical complications as well as improve the surgical results in some plastic surgeries. However, little is known about the cellular ultrastructure of Salmonella in low-aw environment in relation to the survival and persistence during desiccation. MATERIALS AND RESULTS In this study, Salmonella Enteritidis strain PT30 was dehydrated by exposure to air or by mixing with wheat flour (aw 0·30 at room temperature) for 7 days followed by heat treatment at 80°C for 10, 20, 60 min respectively. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was employed to examine and compare the ultrastructure of heat-treated S. Enteritidis cells after desiccation with the cells suspended in trypticase soy broth (TSB). Cells suspended in TSB broth showed disrupted ribosomes, congregated proteins and denatured DNA. METHODS We reported a brief review of the preoperative use of BTA as an accessory to plastic surgery (blepharoplasty, chin augmentation, mandibular angle ostectomy, rhinoplasty, hyaluronic acid fillers injection for wrinkle reduction) based on previous studies and our experience. RESULTS Preoperative treatment with BTA in plastic surgery helps surgeons operate and results in better cosmetic results. CONCLUSIONS Preoperative BTA treatment can reduce the occurrence of surgical complications as well as improve the surgical results in some plastic surgeries. The procedure is suitable for clinical application and worth promoting. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.AIMS Salmonella cells desiccated in an environment with low-water activity (aw ) show longer survival times and enhanced resistance to heat. However, little is known about the cellular ultrastructure of Salmonella in low-aw environment in relation to the survival and persistence during desiccation. MATERIALS AND RESULTS In this study, Salmonella Enteritidis strain PT30 was dehydrated by exposure to air or by mixing with wheat flour (aw 0·30 at room temperature) for 7 days followed by heat treatment at 80°C for 10, 20, 60 min respectively. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was employed to examine and compare the ultrastructure of heat-treated S. Enteritidis cells after desiccation with the cells suspended in trypticase soy broth (TSB). Cells suspended in TSB broth showed disrupted ribosomes, congregated proteins and denatured DNA.
