Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) possess unique physical, optical, and electrical properties with great potential for future nanoscale device applications. Common synthesis procedures yield SWNTs with large length polydispersity and varying chirality. Electrical and optical applications of SWNTs often require specific lengths, but the preparation of SWNTs with the desired length is still challenging. Insulator-based dielectrophoresis (iDEP) integrated into a microfluidic device has the potential to separate SWNTs by length. Semiconducting SWNTs of varying length suspended with sodium deoxycholate (NaDOC) show unique dielectrophoretic properties at low frequencies (90% and were in excellent agreement with a numerical model for the sorting process.Membrane-based ion separation is environmentally friendly, energy-efficient, and easy to integrate, being widely used in water desalination and purification systems. With the existing separation technologies, it is yet difficult to achieve real time, in situ, and reversible control of the separation process. The permeation rates of small hydrated metal ions (Cs+ and K+) obviously increase upon switching from PB to PW, while the permeation rates of large hydrated metal ions (Li+, Na+, Mg2+, and La3+) remain constant. The membrane selectivity of small hydrated ions to large hydrated ions can be increased by more than 2 times during the electrochemical switch, which could be assigned to the slightly larger crystal size (e.g., pore window size) of PW than PB. The present approach provides a new strategy for constructing tunable seawater desalination and ion extraction systems.By taking advantage of the efficient Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between near-infrared (NIR)-responsive lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and Fenton reagent ferrocenyl compounds (Fc), a series of Fc-UCNPs was designed by functionalizing NaYF4Yb,Tm nanoparticles with Fc1-Fc5 via surface-coordination chemistry. Fc-UCNP-Lipo nanosystems were then constructed by encapsulating Fc-UCNP inside liposomes for efficient delivery. Fc-UCNP can effectively release ·OH via a NIR-promoted Fenton-like reaction. In vitro and in vivo studies of Fc1-UCNP-Lipo confirmed the preferential accumulation in a tumor site followed by an enhanced uptake of cancer cells. Therefore, in this work, the vdW epitaxy of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) on single-crystalline TMD templates is investigated in depth. It is demonstrated that the role of lattice mismatch is insignificant. More importantly is the role of surface energy, calculated using density functional theory, which plays an essential role in the activation energy for adatom diffusion, hence nucleation density. This in turn correlates with defect density since the stacking sequence in vdW epitaxy is generally poorly controlled. Moreover, the vapor pressure of the transition metal is also found to correlate with adatom diffusion. Consequently, the proposed study enables important and new insight in the vdW epitaxy of multilayer 2D homo-/heterostructures.A method for the synthesis of 2,3,6,7-substituted anthracene derivatives, one of the most challenging anthracene substitution patterns to obtain, is presented. Now, it has spread rapidly and has been declared a pandemic affecting over 200 countries with widespread morbidity and mortality. It has been postulated that the most vulnerable population are the elderly, people living in crowded areas, children and immune-compromised individuals, such as people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The correlation of tuberculosis (TB), HIV and malnutrition are well documented and hence, people with tuberculosis should be considered as special population in this pandemic. TB is an ancient disease among humans recorded as far **** as seventy thousand years which was declared a global public health emergency in 1993 by the World Health Organisation (WHO). India has the highest TB burden in the world.We used a publicly available data of 44,672 patients reported by China's centre for disease control to study the role of age, sex, co-morbidities and health-care related occupation on COVID-19 mortality. The data is in the form of absolute numbers and proportions. Using the percentages, retrospective synthetic data of 100 survivors and 100 deaths were generated using random number libraries so that proportions of ages, genders, co-morbidities, and occupations were constant as in the original data. Logistic regression of the four predictor factors of age, sex, co-morbidities and occupation revealed that only age and comorbidities significantly affected mortality. Sex and occupation when adjusted for other factors in the equation were not significant predictors of mortality. Age and presence of co-morbidities correlated negatively with survival with co-efficient of -1.23 and -2.33 respectively. Odds ratio (OR) for dying from COVID-19 for every 10-year increase in age was 3.4 compared to the previous band of 10 years.

Microalgae have been recently cultivated using resources from wastewater treatment plants, including nutrients, CO2, and heat. In the present study, we focused on the natural cultivation of total microalgae rather than specific microalgae, for which culture conditions and the cultivation environment are difficult to prepare. Natural microalgal cultivation systems using 380-L raceway tanks were operated outdoors for 8 months and the effects of the culture substrate were investigated. The cultivation substrate was the primary effluent with or without excess sludge. The results showed that when diluted excess sludge was added to the substrate, microalgal biomass increased more than when the substrate contained only primary effluent. Additionally, the wastewater suspended matter and water quality were removed, reaching low levels. Microalgal culture systems using excess sludge showed higher organic acid content, higher biochemical methane potential, and higher efficiency in producing more microalgal biomass than wastewater treatment plant systems that did not use excess sludge.in English, German Zusammenfassung. Anschließend priorisierten die Teilnehmenden die als wichtig erachteten Forschungsschwerpunkte. Ergebnisse Fünfzehn Expertinnen und Experten ergänzten 61 identifizierte Forschungsthemen, die in bereits bestehenden Forschungsagenden enthalten sind. Insgesamt schätzten sie 107 Themen hinsichtlich ihrer Wichtigkeit ein. Sie priorisierten 79 mehrheitlich als wichtig erachtete Themen. Aim of this work is to build a framework for the evaluation of the impact of mobility policies on air quality in 14 major Italian cities, on a long-time scale (2006-2016). Air quality data was collected from all PM10, PM2.5, and NO2 monitoring stations, installed in compliance with the European directive 2008/50/EC. A large dataset was collected, including public transport, environmental, and fuel categorization of the private vehicular fleet, low emissions zones and modal split. In the analyzed time period, both public transportation use and private motorization decreased. Considering the environmental classification standards of vehicles, Northern cities are more readily switching to newer and less polluting cars (e.g. Euro 5 and Euro 6). There has been a general reduction in PM and NO2 concentration. Nevertheless, exceedances are still above the targeted limit value, mainly in some Northern cities who made major investments in sustainable and shared mobility this highlights a strong influence of climatic conditions and other sources. Dramatic variations in the CO/NO ratio were observed in Turin, while smaller changes are observed in Milan, Rome and Palermo.Effectiveness of a 12-week cognitive training (CT) programme for community-dwelling patients with dementia was evaluated on various cognitive functions (attention, memory, executive functions and reasoning) and psychological well-being (PWB). A single-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted in adult day care centres in Helsinki, Finland. Participants (N = 147) were older individuals with mild to moderate dementia living at home and attending day care (mean age 83 years, 72% female, 63% at mild stage of dementia). The intervention group (n = 76) received systematic CT for 45 min twice a week while the control group (n = 71) attended day care as usual. The cognitive and psychological outcomes were measured at baseline, and followed up at 3 and 9 months. No differences between the two groups in changes of any of the cognitive functions, or PWB over time were found. We observed a positive trend at 3 months in the change for PWB favouring the intervention group, but no significant interaction effect was found (p = .079; d = -0.31). Thus, systematic CT appears to have no effect on neuropsychological outcomes of cognitive functioning and PWB in older adults who already have dementia.Intrinsically disordered proteins are now widely accepted to play crucial roles in biological functions. Identification of signatures of intrinsic disorder is one of the key steps towards building a proper repertoire for their occurrence in proteomes. In this work, systematic computational synthesis of a library of all possible (3368400) dipeptides, tripeptides, tetrapeptides and pentapeptides using the natural 20 amino acids allowed us to identify 36 unique tetrapeptides present exclusively in intrinsically disordered proteins and absent in the complete primary sequence space of naturally occurring structured proteins. Further, out of more than 530000 known naturally occurring primary sequences without any structural information, 1349 sequences contain the above identified unique signatures of intrinsic disorder. These sequences, having cellular functions varying from housekeeping to metabolic to transport, more than double the number of the currently known intrinsically disordered proteins. On similar lines, we report that 26577 pentapeptide signatures exclusive to intrinsically disordered proteins, and absent in naturally occurring structured proteins, identify ∼50% of more than half-a-million curated protein sequences without structural information to be intrinsically disordered.

At the end of December 2019, a novel acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2) appeared as the third unheard of outbreak of human coronavirus infection in the 21st century. First, in Wuhan, China, the novel SARS-CoV2 was named by the World Health Organization (WHO), as 2019-nCOV (COVID-19), and spread extremely all over the world. SARS-CoV2 is transmitted to individuals by human-to-human transmission leading to severe viral pneumonia and respiratory system injury. SARS-CoV2 elicits infections from the common cold to severe conditions accompanied by lung injury, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and other organ destruction. There is a possibility of virus transmission from asymptomatic cases as active carriers, in addition to symptomatic ones, which is a crucial crisis of COVID-19 that should be considered. Comments boxes allowed participants to provide rationale for selecting a severity grade for each case. Agreement with expert grading among study participants was evaluated using percentage agreement. Inter-rater reliability was evaluated by Kendall's coefficient of concordance (W). The final SGT was revised based on validation study results and feedback received. Results The overall agreement was almost perfect with W = 0.84 (confidence interval [CI], 0.78-0.90). Of 34 DAEs, respondent agreement with expert grading of more than 90% was reached for 18 DAEs, 80% to 90% for six DAEs, 70% to 80% for six DAEs, and less than 70% for four DAEs. Introduction Fungal infections are increasingly encountered in clinical practice due to more favorable environmental conditions and increasing prevalence of immunocompromised individuals. The diagnostic approach for many fungal pathogens continues to evolve. Herein, we outline available diagnostic tests for the most common fungal infections with a focus on recent advances and future directions.Areas covered We discuss the diagnostic testing methods for angioinvasive molds (Aspergillus spp. and Mucor spp.), invasive yeast (Candida spp. and Cryptococcus ssp.), Pneumocystis, and endemic fungi (Blastomyces sp., Coccidioides ssp., and Histoplasma sp.). The PubMed-NCBI database was searched within the past 5 years to identify the most recent available literature with dates extended in cases where literature was sparse. Diagnostic guidelines were utilized when available with references reviewed.Expert opinion Historically, culture and/or direct visualization of fungal organisms were required for diagnosis of infection. Significant limitations included ability to collect specimens and delayed diagnosis associated with waiting for culture results. Antigen and antibody testing have made great strides in allowing quicker diagnosis of fungal infections but can be limited by low sensitivity/specificity, cross-reactivity with other fungi, and test availability. Molecular methods have a rich history in some fungal diseases, while others continue to be developed.Introduction Acutely ill and medically complex pediatric patients typically rely on central venous catheters (CVCs) for vascular access. CVCs can have serious complications, including venous thromboembolism (VTE). In children, CVCs are the most common risk factor for VTE.Area covered Studies focused on the prevention and treatment of CVC-related VTE in children have been lacking until recently. Currently, there is one U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved anticoagulant, dalteparin, and phase 3 trial results for two direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in pediatrics have recently been published. This review focuses on the epidemiology, risk factors, prevention, and treatment for CVC-related VTE in children. Data are included from relevant articles in PubMed, 1990 to present.Expert opinion With a paucity of FDA-approved anticoagulants for VTE treatment or prophylaxis in children, dosing and monitoring recommendations are often based largely on adult studies. DOACs are a promising group of anticoagulants to be used for children since they are given orally and do not require monitoring. Currently, children at the highest risk for CVC-related VTE are not well represented in the published pediatric DOAC trials.Introduction Monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs) are rapidly changing the therapeutic scenario of multiple myeloma. Darunavir-loaded oral pro-liposome powder (OPP) was prepared by a solvent evaporation technique with varying independent variables at three different levels. Based on different levels pro-liposome powder formulation was optimized by using Box-Behnken design. The formulations were analyzed for its size distribution, entrapment efficiency and surface morphology. Optimized pro-liposome batch A was evaluated for physical parameter, morphological parameters, entrapment efficiency, followed by in vitro, ex- vivo and in-vivo studies. Oral pro-liposome powder showed good micromeritic properties with angle of repose was less than 30°, Carr's index and Hausner's ratio were also less than 21 and 1.25, respectively. The mean size of the vesicles was in the range of 180 to 290 nm. The assay and entrapment efficiency of pro-liposome powder formulations were 79.00 ± 0.2% and 93.46 ± 0.2% respectively. In vitro release of Darunavir pro-liposome powder was 78.17 ± 0.1% after 24 hrs which shows good release from the vesicle of pro-liposome. Ex vivo permeation study shows 58.11% enhancement which shows good permeation. The optimize batch A of pro-liposome powder indicated 50% enhancement in the relative bioavailability as compared to the Darunavir suspension. The results showed that pro-liposome powder containing Darunavir can efficiently deliver in to the blood stream. While the very first double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial conducted in Wuhan, did not find any significant benefit compared to the control, the preliminary result of another similar multi-country trial has shown a significant faster time to recovery but without any difference in mortality. Complications documented included uveitis flare, raised intraocular pressure, intraocular lens damage/displacement, cystoid macular edema, and retinal detachment.Results There were 39 eyes of 38 patients (20M, 18F; age 27-89 years). Mean interval between cataract surgery and laser was 55 months (range 8-286 months). Mean laser energy was 79 mJ (range 33-207 mJ). At 3 months 62% of eyes achieved a 2-5 Snellen line improvement that was maintained at 12 months. Vision was unchanged in 21% of eyes due to preexisting pathology, with no eyes having worse vision. No post-laser complications were documented.Conclusions NdYAG laser posterior capsulotomy is a safe procedure in uveitis patients, resulting in a good improvement in vision.Background Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, imposing an enormous economic burden on society. The aim of this study was to estimate the effect of polymorphisms in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) and GC genes on lung cancer risk. Methods Eligible case-control studies published between January 2000 and December 2018 were searched and studied. The pooled odds ratio and its 95% confidence interval were used to estimate the effect. Results Fifteen articles that included 4732 lung cancer patients and 4337 controls were identified for this study. Our results demonstrated that the VDR Bsm1 polymorphism (p less then 0.05) and the TC and TT+TC genotypes of the Cdx2 polymorphism (p less then 0.05) were protective factors for avoiding lung cancer incidence, while T allele and TT genotype of Taq1 polymorphism (p less then 0.05) wpulations. Future case-control studies with different ethnicities are still needed to generalize these associations.PURPOSE There are strategies to bring quality cancer care to underserved patients, but poor use of the principles of teamwork is a major barrier to achieving quality services. The intent of this study was to assess teamwork as perceived by health care workers caring for patients with cancer. METHODS We conducted a survey among health care professionals in cancer care at 3 tertiary centers in southwestern Nigeria from July to November 2016. Respondents rated teamwork using the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire; we focused on the teamwork climate subscale comparing health care providers and institutions using analysis of variance and on collaboration using logistic regression. RESULTS Three hundred seventy-three professionals completed the survey 177 physicians (47%), 51 nurses (14%), 21 pharmacists (6%), 31 laboratory technicians (8%), and 88 others (24%); 5 (1%) participants had missing professional information. The average teamwork climate score across all professionals in the study was 70.5 (SD = 24.2). Pharmacists rated the teamwork climate the lowest, with a mean score of 63.9 (SD = 29.5); nurses and laboratory technicians rated teamwork higher, with means of 74.5 (SD = 21.7) and 74.2 (SD = 27.1), respectively; and physicians rated teamwork 66.0 (SD = 23.6). Collaboration with other health care providers was reported as poorer by physicians compared with nurses and pharmacists. CONCLUSION Although overall teamwork scores were consistent with ambulatory studies in the United States, important subgroup variations provide targets for intervention. Physicians rated collaboration as poor both intra- and interprofessionally. Pharmacists rated interprofessional teamwork with nurses as poor. Efforts to transform cancer care must focus on building trust among the key stakeholders. Results showed that von Mises stress limit values were exceeded in the chair frame by 6.5%, in the collision analysis by 72.1%, and in the footrest by 189.4%. This indicated that the structure of the analyzed wheelchair is not adequated based on simulation results, same as INMETRO reports.Background Occupational therapy-based interventions may help people with advanced cancer to live actively despite their illness. The present study aimed to identify whether the place of residence, rural or urban, influenced the level of physical activity that schoolchildren had in Primary Education and in Secondary Education. Methods A longitudinal study was carried out using the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Children (PAQ-C) for data collection. The sample consisted of 542 students (272 boys and 270 girls), aged between 11 and 13 years, who were interviewed at two different times during the sixth year of primary education, and later in the first year of secondary education. A descriptive analysis of the items and final score of the PAQ-C in the rural and urban environment were carried out in both educational periods and an ANCOVA analysis of the final score; The association between the level of physical activity and the variables used was studied through corrected typified residuals and Cramer's V. The effect size was calculated. Results The results obtained confirmed that there are significant differences in the course variable (f=63,757; p0.05) when the sex variable was controlled (f=27,325; p less then 0.001; η2=0.025). Conclusions The transition to Secondary Education implies the increase of a sedentary lifestyle, both in rural and urban areas.BACKGROUND A growing body of evidence suggests that in the face of life adversity, threats, or other major stressful events, resilience is more conducive to individual adaptation and growth. MATERIAL AND METHODS The Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale and the Chinese Perceived Stress Scale were used to evaluate the resilience and perceived stress of 600 medical staff members from the radiology departments in 32 public hospitals in Sichuan Province, China, respectively. Multiple linear regression was used to analyze factors related to resilience. RESULTS The total resilience score was 65.76±17.26, wherein the toughness dimension score was 33.61±9.52, the strength dimension score was 21.25±5.50, and the optimism dimension score was 10.91±3.15. There was a significant negative correlation between perceived stress and resilience (r=-0.635, P less then 0.001). According to multivariate analysis, the total perceived stress score (ß=-1.318, P less then 0.001), gender (ß=-4.738, P less then 0.001), knowledge of COVID-19 (ß=2.884, P=0.043), knowledge of COVID-19 protective measures (ß=3.260, P=0.042), and availability of adequate protective materials (ß=-1.268, P=0.039) were independent influencing factors for resilience. CONCLUSIONS The resilience level of the medical staff in the radiology departments during the outbreak of COVID-19 was generally low, particularly regarding toughness. More attention should be paid to resilience influence factors such as high perceived stress, female gender, lack of understanding of COVID-19 and protective measures, and lack of protective materials, and targeted interventions should be undertaken to improve the resilience level of the medical staff in the radiology departments during the outbreak of COVID-19.Background There is a lack of studies on adjustment to upper limb prosthesis with large representative samples that would compare different prosthesis types and use standardised outcome measures. Hence, we wanted to assess satisfaction with, and level of adjustment to, an upper-limb prosthesis among people after an upper limb amputation in our country. Material and methods We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study. The TAPES-R questionnaire was mailed to 431 patients identified from electronic health records at national specialist outpatient clinics for rehabilitation of people after upper limb amputation. Results 191 patients (44%) responded and were subsequently ascertained to be a representative sample of the population of upper limb amputees in our country. Univariate analyses and multiple regression models indicated that, on average, overall satisfaction is lower among those who have received their current prosthesis more recently, women might be more satisfied with prosthesis than men, above-elbow amputees experience more activity restrictions than those with amputation at a lower level, patients with amputated fingers or palm are more satisfied with the prosthesis than others, and so are those who had amputation following an accident as compared to other reasons. Conclusion We reliably identified some systematic factors, but it is individual factors and experience that largely determine adjustment to and satisfaction with a prosthesis following an upper limb amputation.

The present study aimed to identify whether the place of residence, rural or urban, influenced the level of physical activity that schoolchildren had in Primary Education and in Secondary Education. Methods A longitudinal study was carried out using the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Children (PAQ-C) for data collection. The sample consisted of 542 students (272 boys and 270 girls), aged between 11 and 13 years, who were interviewed at two different times during the sixth year of primary education, and later in the first year of secondary education. A descriptive analysis of the items and final score of the PAQ-C in the rural and urban environment were carried out in both educational periods and an ANCOVA analysis of the final score; The association between the level of physical activity and the variables used was studied through corrected typified residuals and Cramer's V. The effect size was calculated. Results The results obtained confirmed that there are significant differences in the course variable (f=63,757; p0.05) when the sex variable was controlled (f=27,325; p less then 0.001; η2=0.025). Conclusions The transition to Secondary Education implies the increase of a sedentary lifestyle, both in rural and urban areas.BACKGROUND A growing body of evidence suggests that in the face of life adversity, threats, or other major stressful events, resilience is more conducive to individual adaptation and growth. MATERIAL AND METHODS The Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale and the Chinese Perceived Stress Scale were used to evaluate the resilience and perceived stress of 600 medical staff members from the radiology departments in 32 public hospitals in Sichuan Province, China, respectively. Multiple linear regression was used to analyze factors related to resilience. RESULTS The total resilience score was 65.76±17.26, wherein the toughness dimension score was 33.61±9.52, the strength dimension score was 21.25±5.50, and the optimism dimension score was 10.91±3.15. There was a significant negative correlation between perceived stress and resilience (r=-0.635, P less then 0.001). According to multivariate analysis, the total perceived stress score (ß=-1.318, P less then 0.001), gender (ß=-4.738, P less then 0.001), knowledge of COVID-19 (ß=2.884, P=0.043), knowledge of COVID-19 protective measures (ß=3.260, P=0.042), and availability of adequate protective materials (ß=-1.268, P=0.039) were independent influencing factors for resilience. CONCLUSIONS The resilience level of the medical staff in the radiology departments during the outbreak of COVID-19 was generally low, particularly regarding toughness. More attention should be paid to resilience influence factors such as high perceived stress, female gender, lack of understanding of COVID-19 and protective measures, and lack of protective materials, and targeted interventions should be undertaken to improve the resilience level of the medical staff in the radiology departments during the outbreak of COVID-19.Background There is a lack of studies on adjustment to upper limb prosthesis with large representative samples that would compare different prosthesis types and use standardised outcome measures. Hence, we wanted to assess satisfaction with, and level of adjustment to, an upper-limb prosthesis among people after an upper limb amputation in our country. Material and methods We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study. The TAPES-R questionnaire was mailed to 431 patients identified from electronic health records at national specialist outpatient clinics for rehabilitation of people after upper limb amputation. Results 191 patients (44%) responded and were subsequently ascertained to be a representative sample of the population of upper limb amputees in our country. Univariate analyses and multiple regression models indicated that, on average, overall satisfaction is lower among those who have received their current prosthesis more recently, women might be more satisfied with prosthesis than men, above-elbow amputees experience more activity restrictions than those with amputation at a lower level, patients with amputated fingers or palm are more satisfied with the prosthesis than others, and so are those who had amputation following an accident as compared to other reasons. Production of wheat germ oil nanoemulsions (WGO), having 114.7 nm average zeta size, 0.144 PD index, 14.76 mV zeta potential value, were successfully carried out. TBARS, FFA, PV, CD, and CT tests, lipid nutritional quality indexes (AI, HH, PI, TI, EPA/DHA, PUFA/SFA, and n3/n6), color measurements, and the changes in sensory quality were studied in cooked mackerel fillets stored at 4 °C for 11 days. WGO nanoemulsion has delayed the increase in TBARS, FFA, PV, CD, and CT values of cooked fish fillets by 36.1%, 20.5%, 32.2%, 37.7%, and 68.4%, respectively. The changes in lipid nutritional quality indexes, b* value and sensory quality of cooked fish fillets treated with WGO nanoemulsions were found to be more stable. The antioxidant and antihypertensive activities of BBME, its hydrolysate and their MRPs were assessed. (37) orthogonal experimental design was used to obtain the optimal reaction conditions for generation of MRPs with improved sensory characteristics. The optimal conditions were processing temperature, 120 °C; processing time, 60 min; xylose concentration, 2.5% (w/v); cysteine concentration, 2%; Vitamin B1, 1.2%; Hydrolyzed vegetable protein, 6%; and sample to liquid ratio, 11. The total content of free amino acid in BBME decreased from 86.18 to 25.50 g L-1 in EH-BBME-MRPs. In addition, EH-BBME and EH-BBME-MRPs contained significantly higher amount of low molecular weight peptides ( less then 1000 Da; 47.2% and 21.84%, respectively) compared to other samples. They also exhibited enhanced antioxidant activities against DPPH, ABTS and hydroxyl free radicals, and presented improved FRAP activity and reducing power. EH-BBME-MRPs also exhibited higher antihypertensive activity compared to other samples. The results indicate that MRPs derived from BBME hydrolysate are promising components for improving food flavor and also provide health benefits. Reduced-fat mayonnaise formulation containing different faba protein/egg yolk powder ratios were prepared and characterized through rheological analyses as well as emulsion stability, texture, color and microstructural evaluations. This work reported effect of salting on the structural change and digestibility of actomyosin before and after heat treatment. Actomyosin in 0.4 M and 0.8 M of NaCl had higher content of disulfide bonds, and actomyosin in 0.4 M NaCl showed the largest particle sizes before and after heat treatment. In addition, actomyosin in 0.6 M and 0.8 M of NaCl was oxidized more severely after heat treatment. Based on peptidomics analysis by using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), actomyosin in 0.6 M was digested more easily, which was followed by sample in 0.8 M and 0.4 M of NaCl in descending order. The lowest digestibility of actomyosin in 0.4 M NaCl was related with its higher content of disulfide bond and severer aggregation behavior. The lower digestibility of actomyosin in 0.8 M NaCl should be related with the higher content of disulfide bonds and surface oxidation. In conclusion, the addition of freeze-dried acid whey in varying amounts did not significantly affect the physicochemical characteristics of sausages from both fallow deer and beef. Major laboratory findings within 12 days post-exposure revealed hypoalbuminemia, proteinuria, thrombocytopenia, leukocytosis and increases in cytokines (IL-6, IL-10 and TNF-α), troponin and creatine kinase. Ricin A-chain (ELISA) was detected in serum up to D3 (peak at 24 h post-exposure), with ∼79% being excreted in the urine within 64 h post-exposure. Ricinine was detected in serum and urine by LC-MS up to D5. A ricin A-chain concentration of 246 µg/mL was found in the seed extract, corresponding to the injection of ∼738 µg of ricin A-chain (∼10.5 µg/kg). The patient was discharged on D71, with limited range of motion and function of the left forearm and hand.Conclusion Ricin injection resulted in a near-fatal poisoning that evolved with septic shock-like syndrome, multiple organ dysfunction and necrotizing fasciitis, all of which were successfully treated with supportive care.Increased risk of pancreatic cancer may be associated with consumption of sugar containing foods. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of peach nectar containing high fructose corn sirup (HFCS) consumption in a pancreatic carcinogenesis rat model induced by 7,12-Dimethyl benzanthracene (DMBA). Fifty-day-old male Sprague Dawley rats were fed with peach nectar containing HFCS + chow, peach nectar containing sucrose + chow and only chow. The present study was a proof-of-concept study that developed a brief version of the ISI, the ISI-3, in a sample of older adult veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a group which is at increased risk for insomnia. Patients/methods Participants included 86 older veterans with combat- or military-related PTSD. Veterans completed a clinician-administered PTSD diagnostic interview, self-report measures of insomnia and other psychosocial questionnaires, and two neuropsychological assessments. The factor structure of the ISI was examined to reduce the measure into a brief version. The reliability and validity of the ISI-3 were examined. Results Principal axis factoring yielded a one-factor solution, which reproduced 59% of the item variance. Item reduction procedures resulted in three items, which best represented this factor ("Insomnia Impact;" ISI-3). For the ISI-3, internal consistency was good (α =.89). Convergent validity was demonstrated via moderate to high positive correlations between the ISI-3 and other measures of sleep disturbance. Divergent validity was demonstrated via non-significant correlations between the ISI-3 and unrelated measures and moderate correlations with self-reported depression. Conclusions The ISI-3 is a psychometrically valid brief version of the ISI. Clinicians can administer the ISI-3 to screen for insomnia and monitor changes in insomnia during treatment.Context The illegal market of counterfeit and falsified medicines and supplements containing unlabeled pharmaceuticals is expanding worldwide. They are usually referred to by the term "performance and image enhancing drugs" (PIEDs) and are mainly steroids, stimulants, hormones, and drugs for erectile dysfunction. PIEDs are easily accessible through the online or black markets. We analyzed over 400 such medicines confiscated in Italy in the period 2017-2019, to determine their composition.Methods Confiscated products were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry, in order to ascertain their composition and to evaluate the correspondence between what was declared on the label and the actual content, or to identify unknown products.Results The most commonly found substance was anabolic steroids, found in 64% of products, with 11% containing hormone modulators, 6% stimulants, 6% sexual enhancers (mainly sildenafil) and other drugs, including thyrntamination.Conclusions The use of counterfeit products is a public health concern, as it constitutes a high risk for consumer health. It is mainly caused by the uncontrolled use of steroids, stimulants, sexual enhancers, and other medicaments, without medical indication or supervision, with variable and unknown compositions and doses, as well as other contaminants as a result of the absence of good manufacturing practices.Previous studies on the association between legume and nuts intake and risk of breast cancer have mainly been focused on individual components of legume or nuts, rather than consumption of the whole food group. This study aimed to investigate the relation between legume and nuts intake in relation to breast cancer in Iranian women. In this population-based case-control study, we enrolled 350 pathologically confirmed new cases of breast cancer and 700 controls which were matched with cases in terms of age and socioeconomic status. Dietary intakes were assessed using a validated block-format 168-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Legume intake was computed by summing up the consumption of lentils, peas, chickpeas, and different kinds of beans, including red beans and pinto beans. To calculate nuts consumption, we summed up intake of mixed nuts, almond, peanut, walnut and hazelnut. Data on potential confounding variables were also collected using pre-tested questionnaires. In this population-based case-control study, we enrolled 350 pathologically confirmed new cases of breast cancer and 700 controls which were matched with cases in terms of age and socioeconomic status. Dietary intakes were assessed using a validated block-format 168-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Legume intake was computed by summing up the consumption of lentils, peas, chickpeas, and different kinds of beans, including red beans and pinto beans. To calculate nuts consumption, we summed up intake of mixed nuts, almond, peanut, walnut and hazelnut. Data on potential confounding variables were also collected using pre-tested questionnaires.
