Evaluation of corneal endothelial layer was performed using specular microscopy. RESULTS Each study group consisted of five males and four females with total mean age of 28 ± 11.3 years (12-46 years). Endothelial cell density was significantly lower in patients with XP in comparison with controls (P less then 0.002). Maximum and minimum cell areas were significantly higher in XP group (P less then 0.016 and P less then 0.029, respectively). Although central corneal thickness was higher in controls, the difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.106). Furthermore, our study showed that the patients with XP had no difference with controls in terms of coefficient of variation of cell areas. CONCLUSIONS This study showed that endothelial cell population can decrease in patients with XP, although other specular microscopic variables such as coefficient of variation and central corneal thickness may remain within normal values.PURPOSE To evaluate safety and efficacy of hypertonic saline solution administration after uneventful cataract surgery. Similar results were recorded on postoperative day 9 in subjects demonstrating marked corneal edema on the first postoperative day. Endothelial cell loss showed no statistically significant difference between study groups (p = 0.48). No adverse events were recorded in relation to treatment. More patients in the TG (92.4% vs 57.1% in the PG) reported a subjectively clear vision 1 week postoperatively (p = 0.04). The risk was higher in patients with IGCCCG intermediate/poor prognosis (OR 3.56; 95% CI 1.33-9.52) and residual tumor size > 5 cm (OR 3.53; 95% CI 1.39-8.93). Blood loss was higher in patients with IGCCCG intermediate/poor prognosis (β = 0.177; p = 0.029), large residual tumor (β = 0.570; p less then 0.001), an additional intervention (β = 0.342; p less then 0.001) and teratoma on retroperitoneal histology (β = - 0.19; p = 0.014). Thirty-one patients had a postoperative complication Clavien-Dindo Grade ≥ 2 (25.0%). Complication risk was highest in patients undergoing an additional intervention (OR 3.46; 95% CI 1.03-11.60; p = 0.044). CONCLUSIONS The rate of additional interventions in our series is comparable to what has been reported in high-volume centers. RESULTS A smaller cumulative drainage fluid volume until day 14 (CDF) compared to contralateral side was observed in 15 patients (CONV) vs. 16 patients (VAC), with a median CDF 230 ml (CONV) vs. 415 ml (VAC) and a median maximum daily fluid volume (MDFV) of 80 ml (CONV) vs. 110 ml (VAC). Lithium/aluminum layered double hydroxides (Li/Al-LDHs) have been industrially proven to be recyclable lithium adsorbents that do not dissolve upon elution, although they are hypersensitive to lithium deintercalation. In this study, the Li+ adsorption performances and structural stabilities of Li/Al-LDHs samples with different lithium deintercalation intensities are comprehensively investigated and compared to expose the influence of excessive lithium deintercalation. The characterization results demonstrate that Li/Al-LDHs are inclined to transform to gibbsite under excessive lithium deintercalation. Moreover, this transformation is enhanced by a long deintercalation time at 80 °C in deionized water because the layered structure of Li/Al-LDHs collapses upon reduction of the lithium content. The Li+ adsorption kinetics and isotherms reveal that excessive lithium deintercalation has no effect on the adsorption pathway and rate, while the adsorption capacity fluctuates with increased lithium loss on account of the conflict between the generation of Li+ active sites and structural damage. Adsorption experiments at different pH values show that a neutral pH is more favorable because an acidic or alkaline condition leads to the undesirable formation of a gibbsite or amorphous phase in Li/Al-LDHs during adsorption. In addition, the presence of Mg2+ has a significant effect on the lithium adsorption capacity of Li/Al-LDHs. The adsorption capacities of Li/Al-LDHs samples with different lithium deintercalation intensities are all dramatically enhanced by a high Mg2+ concentration, reflecting the promising potential application of Li/Al-LDHs in Li+ extraction from low-grade brines with high Mg/Li ratios. OBJECTIVE The observed poorer physical function in persons with mental disorders could partly be due to dysregulation in physiological stress systems. However, an integrated picture of the role of physiological stress systems on objective physical function is lacking. This study examined the association of multiple physiological stress systems with objective physical function, and explored whether these stress systems contribute to the relationship between depression/anxiety and poorer physical function. METHODS Data of 2860 persons of the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety was used. Physical function was indicated by hand grip strength assessed using a hand-held dynamometer and lung function assessed using a peak flow meter. Inflammatory markers (CRP, IL-6, TNF-α), salivary cortisol (cortisol awakening response (AUCg, AUCi), evening cortisol) and ANS markers (heartrate, PEP, RSA) were determined. Depression/anxiety disorders were determined using psychiatric interviews. Linear regression analyses were adjusted for sociodemographics, health and lifestyle factors. RESULTS Higher inflammation levels were associated with lower hand grip strength (BCRP = -0.21(SE = 0.06), p less then .001) and lower lung function (BCRP = -2.07(SE = 0.66), p = .002), BTNF-α = -3.35(SE = 1.42), p = .022). Higher salivary cortisol levels were associated with lower lung function (Bevening cortisol = -2.22(SE = 0.59), p less then .001). The association, in women, between depression/anxiety disorders and poorer physical function did not significantly diminish after adjustment for physiological stress markers. CONCLUSION This large cohort study showed that stress system dysfunction (especially the immune-inflammatory system and HPA-axis) contributes to poorer objective physical function. Stress system dysfunction did not explain the poorer physical function observed in persons with depression/anxiety disorders, suggesting that other pathways are involved to explain that association. CellTrace Violet™ is a commonly used fluorescent dye used with flow cytometry to identify cell proliferation. Activated equine lymphocytes were examined using flow cytometry, microscopy and tritiated thymidine proliferation assays. CellTrace Violet™ was incorporated into the equine lymphocytes effectively. Equine lymphocytes proliferated when activated with pokeweed mitogen, but did not proliferate when previously stained with CellTrace Violet™. Serial dilutions of CellTrace Violet™ did not eliminate the inhibition of activated lymphocytes. Equine lymphocyte viability was greater than 90 % for both stained and unstained cells. Based on these data, CellTrace Violet™ is not recommended for the assessment of lymphocyte proliferation in equine cells. The mechanism of inhibition of equine lymphocyte proliferation by CellTrace Violet™ is unknown. Furhter, the Wnt agonist DKK2-C2, Wnt inhibitor Endostar were used to verify the effect of miR-141 overexpression on the Wnt/β-catenin pathway. RESULT Compared with the OP group, the content of osteoprotegerin increased while the levels of RANKL, BGP, TRAP decreased in the miR-141 and DKK2-C2 groups (p less then 0.05). The levels of Runx2 and Osterix increased significantly in the miR-141 and DKK2-C2 groups when compared to the OP group (p less then 0.05). Interestingly, the protein expression of Wnt and β-catenin increased while DKK1 was remarkably down-regulated in the miR-141 and DKK2-C2 groups when compared to the OP group (p less then 0.05). In contrast to the miR-141 group, the above results were reversed after treatment with the Endostar (p less then 0.05). CONCLUSION Overexpression of miR-141 could inhibit the osteoporosis of jawbones in ovariectomized rats by activating the Wnt/β-catenin pathway.

Herein, a novel strategy of precisely quantifying the small concentration changes of a certain biotarget by editing the dynamic ranges and sensitivities of a lanthanide-based metal-organic framework (Eu-ZnMOF) biosensor is reported. By elaborately tailoring the biosensor's structure and surface areas, the tunable Eu-ZnMOF is developed with remarkably enhanced response slope within the "optimized useful detection window," enabling it to serve as a powerful signal amplifier (87.2-fold increase) for discriminating the small concentration variation of urinary vanillylmandelic acid (an early pathological signature of pheochromocytoma) within only three times between healthy and diseased subjects. Main structural unit in this description is '4-column', the set of four nearest columns of 14-hedral T-cages together with its internal filling by the pillar of mutually orthogonal pairs of T-cages. Comparison based on this new description of clathrate III and clathrate I (CS-I) shows that 4-column is maximal common structural element of these two structures. On this ground it is argued that clathrate III can be considered as a modification of the clathrate I, formed as a result of multiple interruption of clathrate I crystal growth. At the same time, it is shown that due to crucial differences between these two structures there does not exist structural or reconstructive phase transition between them. Integral character of 4-columns as the structural units of clathrate III is confirmed by the analysis of the most studied case of ionic hydrates of tetraalkylammonium salts in which guest molecules occupy simultaneously T-cages in outer columns and inner T-cages.

He was diagnosed with congenital coronary artery fistula (CAF). Angiography revealed 3 giant aneurysmal formations and coronary artery calcification. We report a case of successful repair of CAF with a giant coronary aneurysm by closing the orifice and resecting the aneurysm and reconstructing the left coronary artery. The surgical procedure included closure from within a vessel dilated by aneurysm and excision of the aneurysm. We were able to completely obliterate the fistula and preserve the normal blood flow through the coronary arteries post operation. The postoperative course was eventful, but the patient was discharged home. We collected patient clinical characteristics, target lesion characteristics, and procedural details. RESULTS Eighty-six percent of patients had complex Type C lesions, and 13.9% had Type B lesions. Lesion length ranged from 8 mm to 130 mm (≤ 20 mm, 15.4%; 20-40 mm, 35.8%; > 40 mm, 49.1%). The right coronary artery (59.2%) was the most common intervention vessel followed by the left ascending artery (30.6%) and the left circumflex artery (10.2%). CTO accounted for 38% of all lesions, followed by distortions (28%), heavy calcification (24%), proximal stent thrombosis (9%), and coronary artery origin anomalies (1%). A total of 142 patients underwent successful PCI using the GuidezillaTM extension catheter. The success rate was 86%. CONCLUSION The GuidezillaTM guide extension catheter was an effective and safe technique in the transradial treatment of complex coronary lesions. The cardiac location of lipomas is rare, mostly asymptomatic, and can cause life-threatening complications by rapid growth. The clinical symptoms, when present, occur in evolution with the growth in size, depending upon the location and degree of invasion in the endocardium. We present the case of a 63-year-old male patient with a large intrapericardial lipoma with an unusual location, originating from the left atrial roof. The initial symptoms of the patient were shortness of breath, dizziness, and mild dyspnea. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) was the first line diagnosis method, followed by computed tomography (CT); both showed a large posterior intrapericardial mass. Resection of a 12/8/5 cm lipomatous tumor mass was performed via median sternotomy, under cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) on the beating heart. Histopathologic examination revealed the presence of diffuse proliferation of large- and medium-sized mature adipocytes consistent with the diagnosis of pericardial lipoma. The patient was discharged at home on the seventh postoperative day, with a marked improvement of his clinical state and effort tolerance. It is the cornerstone for graft patency. In this study, we tried to demonstrate the value of 3D printing in determining optimal saphenous graft length. METHODS Sixteen patients who underwent bypass surgery with only vein grafts were examined. Patients' measurements of graft lengths were obtained from postoperative CT images and from both 3D print models manually with plastic tubes and via 3D print digital images of Mimics software during segmentation. Another measurement was done using the Fit Centerline tool in the analysis module of Mimics software after segmentation. These 3 measurements were compared. RESULTS There was a statistically significant difference between 3 measurement methods for each graft length (P .05). CONCLUSION 3D printing models and their software may be used to determine optimal saphenous graft length and the anastomosis site to decrease operation time. It can be deducted from these results that 3D printing is a promising method for reducing operator dependent variables in adjusting graft size and finding optimal anastomosis sites.

The C-terminal sequence of a protein is involved in processes such as efficiency of translation termination and protein degradation. However, the general relationship between features of this C-terminal sequence and levels of protein expression remains unknown. Here, we identified C-terminal amino acid biases that are ubiquitous across the bacterial taxonomy (1,582 genomes). We showed that the frequency is higher for positively charged amino acids (lysine, arginine), while hydrophobic amino acids and threonine are lower. We then studied the impact of C-terminal composition on protein levels in a library of Mycoplasma pneumoniae mutants, covering all possible combinations of the two last codons. We found that charged and polar residues, in particular lysine, led to higher expression, while hydrophobic and aromatic residues led to lower expression, with a difference in protein levels up to fourfold. We further showed that modulation of protein degradation rate could be one of the main mechanisms driving these differences. Our results demonstrate that the identity of the last amino acids has a strong influence on protein expression levels.The development of three-dimensional (3D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with high chemical stability is of critical importance for their practical use. In this work, it is demonstrated that the stability of 3D COFs can be improved by periodic decoration of isopropyl groups on their backbones. Owing to the strong hydrophobicity of the alkyl groups, the resultant COFs show high crystallinity, permanent pores, and exceptional stability in harsh environments, such as strong acids (3 m HCl or 3 m H2 SO4 for one week), a strong base (20 m NaOH for one week), and boiling water (100 °C for one month). Furthermore, these highly stable and hydrophobic COFs display excellent oil/water separation performance with >99 % separation efficiency over a wide pH range. This work demonstrates the use of alkyl decoration in 3D COFs to tune their chemical stability and expand their potential applications.Usher syndrome encompasses a group of genetically and clinically heterogeneous autosomal recessive disorders with hearing deficiencies and retinitis pigmentosa. The mechanisms underlying the Usher syndrome are highly variable. In the present study, a Chinese family with Usher syndrome was recruited. Whole exome sequencing (WES), Sanger sequencing, homozygosity mapping, short tandem repeat (STR) analysis and segregation analysis were performed. Functional domains of the pathogenic variant for USH2A were analysed. We identified a homozygous frameshift variant c.99_100insT (p.Arg34Serfs*41) in the USH2A gene in the proband that showed discordant segregation in the father. Further homozygosity mapping and STR analysis identified an unusual homozygous variant of proband that originated from maternal uniparental disomy (UPD). The p.Arg34Serfs*41 variant produced a predicted truncated protein that removes all functional domains of USH2A. The variant was not included in the 1000 Human Genomes Project database, ExAC database, HGMD or gnomAD database, but was included in the ClinVar databases as pathogenic. Although USH2A is an autosomal recessive disease, the effects of UPD should be informed in genetic counselling since the recurrence risk of an affected child is greatly reduced when the disease is due to the UPD mechanism. To test potential patients, WES, combined with STR analysis and homozygosity mapping, provides an accurate and useful strategy for genetic diagnosis. The C-terminal sequence of a protein is involved in processes such as efficiency of translation termination and protein degradation. However, the general relationship between features of this C-terminal sequence and levels of protein expression remains unknown. Here, we identified C-terminal amino acid biases that are ubiquitous across the bacterial taxonomy (1,582 genomes). We showed that the frequency is higher for positively charged amino acids (lysine, arginine), while hydrophobic amino acids and threonine are lower. We then studied the impact of C-terminal composition on protein levels in a library of Mycoplasma pneumoniae mutants, covering all possible combinations of the two last codons. We found that charged and polar residues, in particular lysine, led to higher expression, while hydrophobic and aromatic residues led to lower expression, with a difference in protein levels up to fourfold. We further showed that modulation of protein degradation rate could be one of the main mechanisms driving these differences. Our results demonstrate that the identity of the last amino acids has a strong influence on protein expression levels.The development of three-dimensional (3D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with high chemical stability is of critical importance for their practical use. In this work, it is demonstrated that the stability of 3D COFs can be improved by periodic decoration of isopropyl groups on their backbones. Owing to the strong hydrophobicity of the alkyl groups, the resultant COFs show high crystallinity, permanent pores, and exceptional stability in harsh environments, such as strong acids (3 m HCl or 3 m H2 SO4 for one week), a strong base (20 m NaOH for one week), and boiling water (100 °C for one month). Furthermore, these highly stable and hydrophobic COFs display excellent oil/water separation performance with >99 % separation efficiency over a wide pH range. This work demonstrates the use of alkyl decoration in 3D COFs to tune their chemical stability and expand their potential applications.Usher syndrome encompasses a group of genetically and clinically heterogeneous autosomal recessive disorders with hearing deficiencies and retinitis pigmentosa. The mechanisms underlying the Usher syndrome are highly variable. In the present study, a Chinese family with Usher syndrome was recruited. Whole exome sequencing (WES), Sanger sequencing, homozygosity mapping, short tandem repeat (STR) analysis and segregation analysis were performed. Functional domains of the pathogenic variant for USH2A were analysed. We identified a homozygous frameshift variant c.99_100insT (p.Arg34Serfs*41) in the USH2A gene in the proband that showed discordant segregation in the father. Further homozygosity mapping and STR analysis identified an unusual homozygous variant of proband that originated from maternal uniparental disomy (UPD). The p.Arg34Serfs*41 variant produced a predicted truncated protein that removes all functional domains of USH2A. The variant was not included in the 1000 Human Genomes Project database, ExAC database, HGMD or gnomAD database, but was included in the ClinVar databases as pathogenic. Although USH2A is an autosomal recessive disease, the effects of UPD should be informed in genetic counselling since the recurrence risk of an affected child is greatly reduced when the disease is due to the UPD mechanism. To test potential patients, WES, combined with STR analysis and homozygosity mapping, provides an accurate and useful strategy for genetic diagnosis. Silymarin extracted from milk thistle consisting of flavonolignan silybin has shown chemopreventive and chemosensitizing activity against various cancers. The present review summarizes the current knowledge on the potential targets of silymarin against various cancers. Silymarin may play on the system of xenobiotics, metabolizing enzymes (phase I and phase II) to protect normal cells against various toxic molecules or to protect against deleterious effects of chemotherapeutic agents on normal cells. A total of 2538 protein-coding genes, six microRNAs (miRNAs), and 1617 long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) were identified differentially expressed between the groups, including several well-characterized cardiomyopathy-related genes (ANKRD1, FHL2, TGFB3, miR-30d, and miR-154). Gene enrichment analysis revealed that those genes are significantly involved in heart development and physiology. Furthermore, we highlighted four subnetworks mtDNA-subnetwork, DSP-subnetwork, MYH7-subnetwork, and MYBPC3-subnetwork, which could play significant roles in the progression of HCM. The pedicled palatal periosteal flap is a simple and effective surgical technique with high predictability and patient satisfaction levels, offering one more alternative for the treatment of OAF. BACKGROUND Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a major cause of cardio-embolism in patients with stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA). Insertable cardiac monitors (ICM) make long-term monitoring for AF possible, but limited health care resources make patient selection important. AF is associated with atherosclerosis and markers of this could potentially be used to guide AF monitoring. METHODS AND RESULTS One-hundred fourteen TIA-patients without AF were thoroughly monitored for AF with ECG, 72-hour Holter monitoring and ICM with a median monitoring time of 2.2 years. Patients with AF (n = 18) were significantly older than patients without AF (age 71.1 versus 64.4 years, P = .008) but were otherwise similar in regards to comorbidities. AF patients had significantly thicker carotid intima-media and also more often presence of carotid plaques than patients without AF, but no difference was found after adjusting for age and sex. No difference in noncontrast cardiac CT calculated coronary artery calcium score was found between the 2 groups. Serum biomarkers did not differ between groups, except for brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), where patients with BNP in the upper tertile were more likely to have AF than patients with BNP in the lowest tertile, odds ratio 5.96 (95% confidence interval 1.04-34.07, P = .045). CONCLUSIONS Carotid intima-media thickness and coronary artery calcium score were poor predictors of AF in patients with TIA. Apart from BNP, the examined biomarkers (hs-CRP, MR-proADM, c-TnI, copeptin) had no predictive value, but larger scale studies are needed to confirm these findings. PURPOSE We aimed to quantify the extent to which overweight and obesity explain cesarean delivery risk among women of different racial and ethnic backgrounds. METHODS Using administrative records for 216,481 singleton, nulliparous births in New York City from 2008 to 2013, we calculated risk ratios, risk differences, and population attributable fractions for associations between body mass index (BMI) and cesarean, stratified by race and ethnicity. RESULTS The population attributable fraction (95% confidence interval) for BMI was 6.8% (6.2%-7.3%) among Asian, 10.9% (10.4%-11.4%) among White, 14.6% (13.7%-15.5%) among Hispanic, and 17.4% (16.2%-18.6%) among Black women. Although overweight and obesity were most prevalent among Black and Hispanic women, the risk gradient was strongest among Whites (adjusted risk ratio [95% CI] from 1.37 [1.33-1.41] for overweight to 2.23 [2.07-2.39] for class III obesity). Additional adjustment for gestational complications partially attenuated associations, and accounting for delivery hospital eliminated the stronger gradient among White women. CONCLUSIONS Prepregnancy overweight and obesity contribute proportionally more to cesarean risk among Black and Hispanic women because of higher prevalence compared to White or Asian women. Although preconception weight management is important to decrease cesarean risk, results encourage attention to clinical approaches in low-risk pregnancies to mitigate racial and ethnic perinatal disparities. BACKGROUND The optimal management of asymptomatic aortic stenosis (AS) remains controversial. Although exercise stress echocardiography (ESE) has been applied to nonischemic heart disease, the evidence of the prognostic value for asymptomatic AS has been limited. This study aimed to investigate the value of ESE in patients with asymptomatic AS. METHODS This retrospective observational study included consecutive asymptomatic patients with at least moderate AS (mean pressure gradient ≥ 20 mm Hg or aortic valve area less then 1.5 cm2) and preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (≥50%) who underwent ESE. Of these, 10 patients who were referred for aortic valve replacement without symptoms were excluded. A final 99 conservatively managed patients (73 ± 13 years; 54% male) were enrolled in this study. All patients were followed for AS-related events. RESULTS During the mean follow-up period of 14 ± 11 months, 23 patients underwent from AS-related events. Although no differences were found between the patients with and without adverse events in terms of mean pressure gradient during exercise, the transvalvular flow rate during exercise (Ex-FR) was lower in the patients who experienced adverse events (236 ± 55 vs 274 ± 64 mL/sec, P = .01). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed a decrease in Ex-FR ( less then 270 mL/sec) independently associated with adverse events in patients with asymptomatic AS (hazard ratio = 3.53, P less then .01). CONCLUSIONS The result of the present study suggests that Ex-FR measured by ESE could play a crucial role in the risk stratification of patients with asymptomatic AS.

Insertable cardiac monitors (ICM) make long-term monitoring for AF possible, but limited health care resources make patient selection important. AF is associated with atherosclerosis and markers of this could potentially be used to guide AF monitoring. METHODS AND RESULTS One-hundred fourteen TIA-patients without AF were thoroughly monitored for AF with ECG, 72-hour Holter monitoring and ICM with a median monitoring time of 2.2 years. Patients with AF (n = 18) were significantly older than patients without AF (age 71.1 versus 64.4 years, P = .008) but were otherwise similar in regards to comorbidities. AF patients had significantly thicker carotid intima-media and also more often presence of carotid plaques than patients without AF, but no difference was found after adjusting for age and sex. No difference in noncontrast cardiac CT calculated coronary artery calcium score was found between the 2 groups. Serum biomarkers did not differ between groups, except for brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), where patients with BNP in the upper tertile were more likely to have AF than patients with BNP in the lowest tertile, odds ratio 5.96 (95% confidence interval 1.04-34.07, P = .045). CONCLUSIONS Carotid intima-media thickness and coronary artery calcium score were poor predictors of AF in patients with TIA. Apart from BNP, the examined biomarkers (hs-CRP, MR-proADM, c-TnI, copeptin) had no predictive value, but larger scale studies are needed to confirm these findings. PURPOSE We aimed to quantify the extent to which overweight and obesity explain cesarean delivery risk among women of different racial and ethnic backgrounds. METHODS Using administrative records for 216,481 singleton, nulliparous births in New York City from 2008 to 2013, we calculated risk ratios, risk differences, and population attributable fractions for associations between body mass index (BMI) and cesarean, stratified by race and ethnicity. RESULTS The population attributable fraction (95% confidence interval) for BMI was 6.8% (6.2%-7.3%) among Asian, 10.9% (10.4%-11.4%) among White, 14.6% (13.7%-15.5%) among Hispanic, and 17.4% (16.2%-18.6%) among Black women. Although overweight and obesity were most prevalent among Black and Hispanic women, the risk gradient was strongest among Whites (adjusted risk ratio [95% CI] from 1.37 [1.33-1.41] for overweight to 2.23 [2.07-2.39] for class III obesity). Additional adjustment for gestational complications partially attenuated associations, and accounting for delivery hospital eliminated the stronger gradient among White women. CONCLUSIONS Prepregnancy overweight and obesity contribute proportionally more to cesarean risk among Black and Hispanic women because of higher prevalence compared to White or Asian women. Although preconception weight management is important to decrease cesarean risk, results encourage attention to clinical approaches in low-risk pregnancies to mitigate racial and ethnic perinatal disparities. BACKGROUND The optimal management of asymptomatic aortic stenosis (AS) remains controversial. Although exercise stress echocardiography (ESE) has been applied to nonischemic heart disease, the evidence of the prognostic value for asymptomatic AS has been limited. This study aimed to investigate the value of ESE in patients with asymptomatic AS. METHODS This retrospective observational study included consecutive asymptomatic patients with at least moderate AS (mean pressure gradient ≥ 20 mm Hg or aortic valve area less then 1.5 cm2) and preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (≥50%) who underwent ESE. Of these, 10 patients who were referred for aortic valve replacement without symptoms were excluded. A final 99 conservatively managed patients (73 ± 13 years; 54% male) were enrolled in this study. All patients were followed for AS-related events. RESULTS During the mean follow-up period of 14 ± 11 months, 23 patients underwent from AS-related events. Although no differences were found between the patients with and without adverse events in terms of mean pressure gradient during exercise, the transvalvular flow rate during exercise (Ex-FR) was lower in the patients who experienced adverse events (236 ± 55 vs 274 ± 64 mL/sec, P = .01). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed a decrease in Ex-FR ( less then 270 mL/sec) independently associated with adverse events in patients with asymptomatic AS (hazard ratio = 3.53, P less then .01). PATIENTS/METHOD Four patients with acquired haemophilia treated in three different institutions around Australia in the last 12 (twelve) months were included in the study. Haemostatic efficacy of Obizur was assigned by the treating Haematologist according to previously published criteria. The obtained photocatalyst exhibited an apparent quantum yield of 16 %, which is the highest achieved for BaLa4 Ti4 O15 to date. Thus, the developed loading technique of Rh2-x Crx O3 particles is extremely effective at improving the activity of the water-splitting photocatalyst BaLa4 Ti4 O15 . In contrast, the habitat amount hypothesis predicts that (1) species richness in plots of fixed size (species density) is more strongly and positively related to the amount of habitat around the plot than to patch size or isolation; (2) habitat amount better predicts species density than patch size and isolation combined, (3) there is no effect of habitat fragmentation per se on species density and (4) patch size and isolation effects do not become stronger with declining habitat amount. Data on eight taxonomic groups from 35 studies around the world support these predictions. Conserving species density requires minimising habitat loss, irrespective of the configuration of the patches in which that habitat is contained. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd/CNRS.BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) is a self-experienced decline in cognitive capacity with normal performance on standardized cognitive tests and has been shown to increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). SCD could also be related to other conditions such as normal aging, psychiatric, neurological or medical disorders. The SCD Initiative proposed a set of features (SCD-plus) that increase the likelihood of preclinical AD in individuals with SCD. Our aim was to assess the effect of these features on the risk of conversion from SCD to AD. METHODS In total 150 SCD subjects who underwent extensive neuropsychological investigation, assessment of cognitive complaints and apolipoprotein E (ApoE) genotyping at baseline and clinical-neuropsychological follow-up for a mean time of 11 years were included. RESULTS During the follow-up, 20 subjects developed AD. Considering SCD-plus features, age at onset ≥60 years and ApoE ε4 significantly increased the risk of conversion from SCD to AD. When our sample was stratified into three groups (no risk factor, one risk factor, two risk factors), the proportion of conversion was statistically significantly different between the three groups. CONCLUSIONS Our model allows the risk of AD to be stratified in patients experiencing SCD according to age at onset and ApoE genotype. ©2020 European Academy of Neurology.PURPOSE Central venous access devices (CVADs) are commonly employed in the management of cancer patients. While having several benefits they are associated with significant risks. We reviewed the incidence and risk factors for catheter-related thrombosis (CRT) in cancer patients with CVADs. METHODS We performed a prospective observational cohort study of adult patients with cancer requiring a CVAD between January 12 004 and June 292 016. The rate of, and risk factors for the development of, symptomatic catheter-related thrombosis were evaluated. RESULTS 4920 central lines were inserted into 3130 patients. The incidence of CRT was 3.6%. CRT developed a median of 12 days following line insertion. PICCs were associated with the highest rates of CRT (HR 22.2, 95% CI 2.9-170.6). Older age groups developed CRT at lower rates (HR 0.57; 95%CI 0.39-0.84 for age 50-61 years, and HR 0.63; 95% CI 0.45-0.89 for age > 61 years) compared to age less then 50 years. Increased CRT was seen in patients with prior CRT (HR 1.81; 95%CI 1.

In contrast, the habitat amount hypothesis predicts that (1) species richness in plots of fixed size (species density) is more strongly and positively related to the amount of habitat around the plot than to patch size or isolation; (2) habitat amount better predicts species density than patch size and isolation combined, (3) there is no effect of habitat fragmentation per se on species density and (4) patch size and isolation effects do not become stronger with declining habitat amount. Data on eight taxonomic groups from 35 studies around the world support these predictions. Conserving species density requires minimising habitat loss, irrespective of the configuration of the patches in which that habitat is contained. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd/CNRS.BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) is a self-experienced decline in cognitive capacity with normal performance on standardized cognitive tests and has been shown to increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). SCD could also be related to other conditions such as normal aging, psychiatric, neurological or medical disorders. The SCD Initiative proposed a set of features (SCD-plus) that increase the likelihood of preclinical AD in individuals with SCD. Our aim was to assess the effect of these features on the risk of conversion from SCD to AD. METHODS In total 150 SCD subjects who underwent extensive neuropsychological investigation, assessment of cognitive complaints and apolipoprotein E (ApoE) genotyping at baseline and clinical-neuropsychological follow-up for a mean time of 11 years were included. RESULTS During the follow-up, 20 subjects developed AD. Considering SCD-plus features, age at onset ≥60 years and ApoE ε4 significantly increased the risk of conversion from SCD to AD. When our sample was stratified into three groups (no risk factor, one risk factor, two risk factors), the proportion of conversion was statistically significantly different between the three groups. CONCLUSIONS Our model allows the risk of AD to be stratified in patients experiencing SCD according to age at onset and ApoE genotype. ©2020 European Academy of Neurology.PURPOSE Central venous access devices (CVADs) are commonly employed in the management of cancer patients. While having several benefits they are associated with significant risks. We reviewed the incidence and risk factors for catheter-related thrombosis (CRT) in cancer patients with CVADs. METHODS We performed a prospective observational cohort study of adult patients with cancer requiring a CVAD between January 12 004 and June 292 016. The rate of, and risk factors for the development of, symptomatic catheter-related thrombosis were evaluated. RESULTS 4920 central lines were inserted into 3130 patients. The incidence of CRT was 3.6%. CRT developed a median of 12 days following line insertion. PICCs were associated with the highest rates of CRT (HR 22.2, 95% CI 2.9-170.6). Older age groups developed CRT at lower rates (HR 0.57; 95%CI 0.39-0.84 for age 50-61 years, and HR 0.63; 95% CI 0.45-0.89 for age > 61 years) compared to age less then 50 years.
