  • Nanobridge Josephson junctions and nanometer-scale superconducting quantum interference devices (nanoSQUIDs) based on titanium nitride (TiN) thin films are described. The TiN films have a room temperature resistivity of ~15 µΩ·cm, a superconducting transition temperature Tc of up to 5.3 K and a coherence length ξ(4.2 K) of ~105 nm. They were deposited using pulsed DC magnetron sputtering from a stoichiometric TiN target onto Si (100) substrates that were heated to 800 °C. Electron beam lithography and highly selective reactive ion etching were used to fabricate nanoSQUIDs with 20-nm-wide nanobridge Josephson junctions of variable thickness. X-ray and high-resolution electron microscopy studies were performed. The essential oils showed various biological activities, including antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, phytotoxic, larvicidal, anti-inflammatory, and cytotoxic properties. This review contributes to the Psidium species rational and economic exploration as natural sources to produce new drugs.Coriandrum sativum L. is a medicinal and aromatic plant spread around the world, with beneficial properties that are well recognized. Both coriander seeds and leaves are used for pharmaceutical and flavoring purposes. Even though coriander seeds tend to be more popular, the leaves are receiving a consistently growing interest, especially because of popularization of Mexican, Northern African, and Indian cuisines. This increased attention brings about the necessity for providing the product with guaranteed quality, which will retain its valuable characteristics, even after post-harvest treatment. For this reason, it is highly necessary to determine reliable protocols for cilantro preservation, which usually include drying procedures; in order to identify the optimal drying treatments, a spectrum of drying techniques-convective, vacuum-microwave, and a combination of convective and vacuum-microwave-were evaluated. Cilantro-based dried products were examined from the perspectives of volatile organic constituent composition and sensory quality.

  • In contrast, offspring of women not taking antidepressant medication with depressive disorder and high anxiety there was low cortisol reactivity observed. Our findings suggest that the relationship between maternal antenatal depression and anxiety and infant cortisol reactivity is mediated through placental 11β-HSD2 mRNA expression. Furthermore, the direction differed for women taking antidepressants, where infant cortisol reactivity was high whereas when compared to those with unmedicated depression and anxiety, where infant cortisol reactivity was low.Mining operations often generate tailing dams that contain toxic residues and are a source of contamination when left unconfined. The establishment of a plant community over the tailings has been proposed as a containment strategy known as phytostabilization. Previously, we described naturally occurring mine tailing colonizing plants such as Acacia farnesiana, Brickellia coulteri, Baccharis sarothroides, and Gnaphalium leucocephalum without finding local adaptation. We explored the rhizosphere microbes as contributors in plant establishment and described both the culturable and in situ diversity of rhizospheric bacteria using the 16S rRNA gene and metagenomic shotgun sequencing. We built a synthetic community (SC) of culturable rhizosphere bacteria from the mine tailings. The SC was then the foundation for a serial passes experiment grown in plant-derived nutrient sources, selecting for heavy metals tolerance, community cooperation, and competition. The outcome of the serial passes was named the 'final synthetic community' (FSC). Overall, diversity decreased from in situ uncultivable microbes from roots (399 bacteria genera) to the cultivated communities (291 genera), the SC (94 genera), and the lowest diversity was in the FSC (43 genera). Metagenomic diversity clustered into 94,245 protein families, where we found plant growth promotion-related genes such as the csgBAC and entCEBAH, coded in a metagenome-assembled genome named Kosakonia sp. Nacozari. Finally, we used the FSC to inoculate mine tailing colonizing plants in a greenhouse experiment. The plants with the FSC inocula observed higher relative plant growth rates in sterile substrates. The FSC presents promising features that might make it useful for phytostabilization tailored strategies.We review glucosinolate (GSL) diversity and analyze phylogeny in the crucifer tribe Cardamineae as well as selected species from Brassicaceae (tribe Brassiceae) and Resedaceae. Some GSLs occur widely, while there is a scattered distribution of many less common GSLs, tentatively sorted into three classes ancient, intermediate and more recently evolved. The number of conclusively identified GSLs in the tribe (53 GSLs) constitute 60% of all GSLs known with certainty from any plant (89 GSLs) and apparently unique GSLs in the tribe constitute 10 of those GSLs conclusively identified (19%). Intraspecific, qualitative GSL polymorphism is known from at least four species in the tribe. The most ancient GSL biosynthesis in Brassicales probably involved biosynthesis from Phe, Val, Leu, Ile and possibly Trp, and hydroxylation at the β-position. From a broad comparison of families in Brassicales and tribes in Brassicaceae, we estimate that a common ancestor of the tribe Cardamineae and the family Brassicaceae exhibited GScal aspects of the deduced evolution are discussed and testable hypotheses proposed. Biosyntheses from Val, Leu, Ile, Phe, Trp, homoPhe and homologs of Met are increasingly well understood, while GSL biosynthesis from mono- and dihomoIle is poorly understood. We filtered and selected SNP with stringent criteria, such as high polymorphism, genome coverage, design score, and priorities. Finally, a total of 43,681 effective SNP successfully genotyped were included on our custom array. Approximately 14K SNP were previously reported to be associated with important economic traits in egg-type chickens.   • eHealth literacy can potentially facilitate web-based information seeking and taking informed measures.

    This study aimed to evaluate socioeconomic disparities in eHealth literacy and seeking of web-based information on COVID-19, and their associations with COVID-19 preventive behaviors.

    The COVID-19 Health Information Survey (CoVHIns), using telephonic (n=500) and web-based surveys (n=1001), was conducted among adults in Hong Kong in April 2020. The Chinese eHealth literacy scale (eHEALS; score range 8-40) was used to measure eHealth literacy. COVID-19 preventive behaviors included wearing surgical masks, wearing fabric masks, washing hands, social distancing, and adding water or bleach to the household drainage system. Adjusted beta coefficients and the slope indices of inequality for the eHEALS score by socioeconomic status, adjusted odds ratios (aORs) for seeking of web-based information on COVID-19 by socioeconomic status, and aORs for the high adherence to preventive behaviors by the eHEALS score aChinese adults with a higher socioeconomic status had higher eHealth literacy and sought more web-based information on COVID-19; both these factors were associated with a high adherence to the guidelines for preventive behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic.

    The aims of this study are to examine the spatial-temporal relationship between population mobility and COVID-19 outbreaks and use population mobility data to predict daily new cases at both the state and county level in South Carolina.

    This longitudinal study used disease surveillance data and Twitter-based population mobility data from March 6 to November 11, 2020, in South Carolina and its five counties with the largest number of cumulative confirmed COVID-19 cases. Population mobility was assessed based on the number of Twitter users with a travel distance greater than 0.5 miles. A Poisson count time series model was employed for COVID-19 forecasting.

Because they are non-invasive, potentially cost-saving and relatively easy to use, the external rhythm recording devices have shown some great advances in the last years, spreading from photoplethysmographic technique to real ECG reconstruction. Technological advances in the field of microelectronics, as well as in the field of data transmission have contributed to their widespread use in cardiology. The trend for miniaturization was also expanded to the implantable recorders.     Complete atrioventricular block (AVB3) may be an urgent potentially lifethreatening situation. Our objective was to describe the routine management of AVB 3, with emphasis on the organizational aspects.

    From September 2019 to November 2019, a prospective national survey including 28 questions was electronically sent to 100 physicians (Google Form).

    The answers were collected from 93 physicians (response rate 93%). Permanent pacemaker implantation during weekends and nights (after 8PM) is possible for 49% of the operators (<5 times a year), for 15% (>5 times a year), impossible for 36% of the operators. For AVB3 nonresponsive to isoproterenol occurring during the night, a temporary pacing lead (TPL) is implanted by the on-site medical staff on-duty (27%), the on-call interventional cardiologist (21%), the on-call electrophysiologist (19%), a permanent pacemaker is implanted by the electrophysiologist (12%), the strategy is not standardized (15%). OH-MINA turned out to be the major of the three metabolites with consistent urinary excretion fractions (FUEs) of 0.020-0.023 % among all volunteers. Oxo-MINA and cx-MIOA were excreted with lower shares (mean 0.003 % and 0.009 %, respectively). For all three metabolites, urinary concentrations peaked quickly between 1.4 and 2.3 h post dose with maximum concentrations of 23.1 (OH-MINA), 2.87 (oxo-MINA) and 9.83 µg/L (cx-MIOA). The present study showed that exposure to WBV could be an important variable for designing work environments that require a high level of performance and mental demand while seated.     Bipolar disorder is a psychiatric disorder that alters mood and affects over 55 million people globally with an estimated lifetime prevalence of approximately 0.8-1.1%. In Africa, the lifetime prevalence of the bipolar spectrum disorders is slightly lower at 0.1-0.6%. Bipolar disorder is ranked the sixth leading cause of disability with high rates of morbidity and mortality and negatively impacts quality of life of those affected.

    The aim of the study was to determine the health-related quality of life of patients with bipolar disorder attending a mental health clinic in south western Uganda. We enrolled a consecutive sample of 169 participants and evaluated their health-related quality of life using the medical outcomes health survey short form-36 (SF-36) scale. We used bivariate and multivariable logistic regression to determine associations between quality of life, sociodemographic and clinical factors setting the physical and mental component categories of quality life scale as the main outcome variabental and physical quality of life of our participants was poor and history of suicidal thoughts and psychotic symptoms were associated with poor quality of life. There is need to address psychotic symptoms and suicidal thoughts in the management of patients with bipolar disorder to improve health related outcomes and quality of life.The epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is intrinsically linked to alterations of the intracellular cytoskeleton and the extracellular matrix. After EMT, cells acquire an elongated morphology with front/**** polarity, which can be attributed to actin-driven protrusion formation as well as the gain of vimentin expression. Consequently, cells can deform and remodel the surrounding matrix in order to facilitate local invasion. In this review, we highlight recent bioengineering approaches to elucidate EMT and functional changes in the cytoskeleton. First, we review transitions between multicellular clusters and dispersed individuals on planar surfaces, which often exhibit coordinated behaviors driven by leader cells and EMT. Second, we consider the functional role of vimentin, which can be probed at subcellular length scales and within confined spaces. Third, we discuss the role of topographical patterning and EMT via a contact guidance like mechanism. Finally, we address how multicellular clusters disorganize and disseminate in 3D matrix. These new technologies enable controlled physical microenvironments and higher-resolution spatiotemporal measurements of EMT at the single cell level.     The SF-36 questionnaire is perhaps the most widely used quality of life instrument in the world today, while the PROMIS instruments continue to gain popularity. Given their continued use in chiropractic research and practice, we examined their latent domain structure using exploratory factor analysis (EFA).

We conducted linear multiple regression analyses with letter and category verbal fluency as outcome variables and performance on other cognitive domains (e.g., processing speed, executive functioning) as predictors.

    Neurofilament heavy (NfH) is a promising biomarker for neuro-axonal damage in Multiple Sclerosis (MS). We compared the performance of high-sensitivity serum-NfH immunoassays, with as aim to investigate the value of serum-NfH as biomarker for MS.

    We measured serum-NfH in 76 MS patients with Simoa (one commercial, one in-house) or Luminex assays. Serum-NfH measured by the immunoassay with greatest sensitivity was related to clinical and radiological outcomes with age and sex-adjusted linear regression analysis, and to biological outcomes cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-NfH, serum neurofilament light (NfL) and CSF-NfL with Spearman's correlation analysis.

    With the commercial Simoa assay, we obtained 100% serum-NfH detectability (in-house Simoa 70%, Luminex 61%), with lowest coefficient of variation (CV) between duplicates of 11%CV (in-house Simoa 22%CV, Luminex 30%CV). Serum-NfH quantified with the commercial Simoa assay was associated with disease duration (standardized beta (sβ)=0.28, p=0.034), T2 lesion volume (sβ=0.23, p=0.041), and tended to associate with black hole count (sβ=0.21, p=0.084) but not with Expanded Disease Disability Score (EDSS) or normalized brain volume (all p>0.10). Furthermore, serum-NfH showed correlations with CSF-NfH (rho=0.27, p=0.018) and serum-NfL (rho=0.44, p<0.001), but not with CSF-NfL.

  • Classical CRAB features (hypercalcaemia, renal failure, anaemia, osteolytic lesions) have been traditionally defined in patients with plasma cell dyscrasia. But these can be rare and uncommon presentations of other chronic lymphoproliferative disorders (CLPD). The pathophysiological basis of CRAB features in other CLPD need to be explored further for better outcomes and therapeutic interventions. These can present a diagnostic dilemma and requires extensive workup to rule out coexisting malignancy and myeloma. Here, we report an unusual case of B CLPD in a middle-aged male who presented with classical CRAB features along with a brief literature review. After detailed investigations, he was diagnosed as chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, without any second malignancy and responded well to ibrutinib-based therapy.Cardiac angiosarcoma is a rare malignant neoplasm, the gold standard treatment is surgical resection. Our patient, an 81-year old Japanese woman, was admitted to hospital after chest pain over a month-long period. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) showed a heterogeneous and irregular mass-like lesion measuring approximately 45 mm and arising from the right ventricular free wall. Transesophageal echocardiography showed the lesion had a mobile portion. Considering the possibility of malignancy and a high risk of embolism and obstruction, we performed surgical resection of the tumour. Histological and immunohistochemical findings led to diagnosis of cardiac angiosarcoma. One year after surgery, TTE and CT showed no evidence of recurrence of angiosarcoma.Amputations of the upper limb, in particular, have a major impact on patients' lives, as loss of function can not only cause reduced autonomy in daily life but also hinder social interactions and capacity for work. Replantation at or proximal to the wrist, referred to as wrist-proximal replantation, remains a daunting challenge that presents the hand surgeon with an array of difficulties distinct from digital replantation.We present our experience with a successful replantation of a near-complete amputation at the non-dominant left wrist in a 25-year-old man managed in sub-Saharan Africa. Two years after replantation, the patient had a Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand score of 40 and 2-point discrimination of 6 mm. We also discuss the peculiar challenges which have limited the development of replantation in the tropics. NEC is associated with severe neutropenia and predominantly affects the large bowel; however, we present a case of severe NEC with oesophageal perforation requiring transfer to a specialist upper gastrointestinal unit for corrective stenting. Despite initial bowel wall thickness of 20 mm in the ascending colon, two discrete episodes of bowel perforation and an inpatient stay totalling 89 days, the patient was discharged with full independence, a good quality of life and a plan for curative mastectomy plus axillary clearance.A 74-year-old man with a history of prostate cancer was referred to the urology team with a new left sided testicular lump. He had a background of prostate cancer 4 years previous which had been treated with external beam radiotherapy and androgen deprivation therapy, both of which had been completed. Concurrently, he also had evidence of biochemical recurrence of prostate cancer with a rising prostate-specific antigen (PSA). He underwent a left radical orchidectomy. Following histopathological analysis, this was found to be metastatic spread from his prostate cancer. Subsequent staging showed no evidence of metastatic spread elsewhere. The patient made a good recovery following surgery and his PSA levels returned to undetectable levels. She presented in the first trimester with abdominal pain and distension associated with ovarian enlargement and did not respond to conservative management. Fetal reduction was done from triplets to twins which resulted in good symptomatic relief for the patient. The patient underwent six cycles of systemic chemotherapy with a favourable response, resulting in improvement in vision and regression of the ocular lesion.A 69-year-old man renal transplant recipient for 4 years, presented with 4-day history of cough and dyspnoea. He was diagnosed with community-acquired pneumonia and treated accordingly. He deteriorated requiring intensive care unit admission and intubation. Mycobacterial culture from bronchoalveolar lavage grew colonies within 7 days of incubation while Mycobacterium tuberculosis PCR was negative. The antibiotic regimen was adjusted to cover for rapidly growing mycobacteria with imipenem, amikacin and clarithromycin. The final culture reported Mycobacterium cosmeticum He improved on the antibiotic regimen given which the organism turned to be sensitive to.   • Previous research has focused on the risks of stress, burnout and the impact on general emotional well-being in paid palliative care staff, however volunteers in patient-facing roles are exposed to similar stressors. Volunteers increasingly provide emotional support to patients and families but receive little formal support for themselves. It is important to understand volunteers' emotional experiences of their role to identify strategies that could be implemented to support them effectively.

    To synthesize qualitative data on the emotional experiences of being a volunteer in palliative and end-of-life care settings, including how people cope with this role and how they can be best supported.

    A systematic review with thematic synthesis design, with an iterative three-stage synthesis, including line-by-line coding, organizing this into descriptive themes and then developing analytical themes. Four databases (PsycInfo, CINAHL, MEDLINE, and EMBASE) were searched in November 2019. The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme was used to evaluate included papers.

    From the 22 included studies, four themes were developed 1) intrinsic challenges (e.g., conflicting feelings); 2) extrinsic challenges (e.g., resources and expectations); 3) personal gain (e.g., learning and self-growth); and 4) developing relationships (e.g., appropriate boundaries). Challenges included personal feelings related to their role for example uncertainty, not being 'good enough' and feeling drained as well as frustrations within the palliative care system.

    Advance care planning (ACP) is underutilized, especially among Black Americans. Yet, no ACP interventions have been tested at the community level.

    Within an established academic and community partnership, we sought to determine whether ACP is a community-identified need and if so, to conduct a pilot study of an evidence-based ACP program, PREPARE (PrepareForYourCare.org).

    We conducted open discussions and in-depth interviews to determine the relevance of ACP to the community. We then conducted a pre- to 3-week postpilot study of a virtual peer facilitated brief session to introduceACP and encourage participants to engage with PREPARE. We conducted thematic content analysis for qualitative data and used paired t-tests to assess within-participant changes in the validated ACP Engagement Survey measured on a 1-5 scale (5 = greatest engagement).

    We conducted two discussion groups with community leaders (n = 12) and key informant interviews (n = 6), including leaders in aging, public health, health care and faith. We concluded that ACP is a community priority. In the pilot study, we enrolled 13 Black Americans; 85% were women and the mean age was 59.7 years (SD 15.1). There was a trend toward increased ACP engagement after the peer facilitated PREPARE (mean 3.2 (SD 0.6) pre vs. 3.5 (SD 0.6) post, paired t-test P = 0.06). All participants found the intervention to be acceptable and were satisfied with it.

    Feasibility of a safe opioid prescribing standard operating protocol (SOP) was determined by assessing the percentage of patients in an outpatient cancer center who completed each component of a five-component SOP.

    A five-component SOP included risk stratification for misuse, consent form, prescription drug monitoring program review, urine drug testing, and Naloxone for high-risk individuals.

Our previous work showed that the antioxidant capacity of Momordica charantia polysaccharides (MCPs) could protect against cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) after stroke. However, whether the protective effect of MCPs on I/R injury is related to neural stem cell (NSC) proliferation remains unclear. In the present study, we designed invivo and invitro experiments to elucidate the underlying mechanisms by which MCPs promote endogenous NSC proliferation during cerebral I/R. Invivo results showed that MCPs rescued the memory and learning abilities of rats after I/R damage and enhanced NSC proliferation in the rat subventricular zone (SVZ) and subgrannular zone (SGZ) during I/R. Invitro experiments demonstrated that MCPs could stimulate the proliferation of C17.2 cells under oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) conditions. Further studies revealed that the proliferation-promoting mechanism of MCPs relied on increasing the activity of SIRT1, decreasing the level of acetylation of β-catenin in the cytoplasm, and then triggering the translocation of β-catenin into the nucleus. These data provide experimental evidence that the up-regulation of SIRT1 activity by MCPs led to an increased cytoplasmic deacetylation of β-catenin, which promoted translocation of β-catenin to the nucleus to participate in the signaling pathway involved in NSC proliferation. The present study reveals that MCPs function as a therapeutic drug to promote stroke recovery by increasing the activity of SIRT1, decreasing the level of acetylated β-catenin, promoting the nuclear translocation of β-catenin and thereby increasing endogenous NSC proliferation.
