We collected ectoparasites before treatments (June-July, 2018) and after treatments (August-October, 2018, June-July, 2019). Both deltamethrin and fipronil suppressed fleas for at least 12 months. Deltamethrin had no detectable effect on mites (Arachnida). Fipronil suppressed mites for at least 12 months. Lice (Phthiraptera) were scarce on non-treated sites throughout the study, complicating interpretation. On the other hand, DNA and microtubules have different structural properties. Here, using computational approaches, we studied the mechanism of protein diffusion along DNA and microtubules by exploring the diffusion of both protein types on both biopolymers. We found that DNA-binding and microtubule-binding proteins can diffuse on each other's substrates; however, the adopted diffusion mechanism depends on the molecular properties of the diffusing proteins and the biopolymers. On the protein side, only DNA-binding proteins can perform rotation-coupled diffusion along DNA, with this being due to their higher net charge and its spatial organization at the DNA recognition helix. By contrast, the lower net charge on microtubule-binding proteins enables them to diffuse more quickly than DNA-binding proteins on both biopolymers. On the biopolymer side, microtubules possess intrinsically disordered, negatively charged C-terminal tails that interact with microtubule-binding proteins, thus supporting their diffusion. Thus, although both DNA-binding and microtubule-binding proteins can diffuse on the negatively charged biopolymers, the unique molecular features of the biopolymers and of their natural substrates are essential for function.

  • Recently, we have witnessed a shift in the nature of genetic testing. What was once solely in the hands of the scientific community is now easily accessible to anyone. Commercial companies such as Veritas Genetics, Ancestry, and 23andMe offer cheap direct-to-consumer home DNA kits that are branded as a "health and ancestry service." These tests are gaining in popularity, and it is estimated that since their marketing, over 30 million people worldwide have provided their DNA samples. The implications of this new genetic era are diverse, ranging from the individuals personal health assessment, to family genealogy and ancestry, and the complexity of establishing an enormous population-based genetic database. Unique implications of commercial DNA tests on fertility patients and heath care providers, such as in the case of gamete donation, are important to acknowledge and have implications for reproductive care.PURPOSE To investigate the associations of previous pregnancy failures, including implantation failures (IFs), biochemical pregnancy losses (BPLs), and early (EMs) and late miscarriages (LMs), with blastocyst aneuploidy and pregnancy outcomes after PGT-A. METHODS This study included 792 couples who underwent PGT-A after multiple pregnancy failures. Subgroup analyses were used to compare the blastocyst aneuploidy rate (BAR), implantation rate (IR), early miscarriage rate (EMR), and live birth rate (LBR). Multiple linear and logistic regression models were used to evaluate the associations. The control group comprised couples with ≤ 2 IFs, ≤ 1 BPL, ≤ 1 EM, and no LM. RESULTS Notably, a history of ≥ 4 IFs was significantly associated with an increase in aneuploid blastocysts (42.86% vs. 33.05%, P = 0.044, B = 10.23 for 4 IFs; 48.80% vs. 33.05%, P = 0.002, B = 14.43 for ≥ 5 IFs). Women with ≥ 4 prior EMs also harbored more aneuploid blastocysts (41.00% vs. 33.05%, P = 0.048; B = 9.23). Compared with the control group, women with ≥ 4 prior EMs had a significantly higher EMR (6.58% vs. 31.11%, P  less then  0.001, OR = 6.49) and a lower LBR (53.49% vs. 34.18%, P = 0.007, OR = 0.56) after euploid transfer. Moreover, a history of LM(s) was associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes after PGT-A (OR for EM = 3.16; OR for live birth = 0.48). However, previous BPLs and 2 EMs were not associated significantly with blastocyst aneuploidy and pregnancy outcomes after PGT-A. CONCLUSION A history of high-order IFs or EMs and existence of LM(s) were significantly associated with blastocyst aneuploidy and adverse pregnancy outcomes after PGT-A, whereas no such associations were observed with BPLs or 2 EMs.PURPOSE The association of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) severity and related health status with sleep quality remains unclear. RESULTS The majority of patients reported uncontrolled symptoms (91% with ≥ 10 CAT or 61% with ≥ 2 mMRC). Mean (SD) age was 65 (12.3) with 79% males. CASIS-7 mean (SD) score was 37.7 (12.9). After adjustments, CASIS was significantly associated with worse health status (e.g., CASIS increased with CAT ≥ 10 [β = 12.53, (95% CI, 6.82, 18.25); p  less then  0.001], mMRC ≥ 2 [β = 4.96, (95% CI, 1.56, 8.34); p = 0.004]), COPD severity (CAT-based GOLD BD [β = 8.88 (95% CI, 2.50, 15.26); p = 0.007]), frailty [β = 8.85 (95% CI 4.45,13.25); p  less then  0.001], and sense of coherence [β = -0.14 (95% CI -0.21, -0.06), p  less then  001]. When using a CASIS cut-off score of 30 as indicator of sleep impairment, additional to the aforementioned associations, we found increased risk for sleep impairment with ≥ 2 exacerbations/year and poor inhaler adherence (p value less then  0.05). CONCLUSIONS Our study suggests that worse health status and COPD severity are associated with poor sleep quality in COPD patients.OBJECTIVE In 2011, a multidisciplinary hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) program with a dedicated myectomy surgeon was implemented at our institution. We hypothesized that a dedicated approach allows better identification and management of mitral regurgitation (MR) during septal myectomy (SM) for obstructive HCM with significant mitral regurgitation. METHODS Between 2006 and 2018, 181 patients had SM at our institution. This study consists of 53 patients with preoperative moderate or greater MR associated with systolic anterior motion who underwent isolated SM with or without mitral intervention. Patients were divided into those who underwent SM by a dedicated myectomy surgeon (group D, n = 31) or by a non-dedicated surgeon (group ND, n = 22). Primary outcome of interest was rate of mitral valve replacement (MVR) at SM. Secondary outcomes include in-hospital mortality, need for permanent pacemaker, mitral valve reoperation, and residual MR and left ventricular outflow tract gradient on postoperative echocardiography. RESULTS 12 patients (55%) had a concomitant MVR during septal myectomy in group ND compared to 2 patients (6%) in group D (p  less then  0.01). Among patients who did not undergo MVR, patients in group D less commonly had residual MR than patients in ND after SM (p  less then  0.01). Group D had 100% survival with NYHA class I in 94% patients at follow-up visit (p = 0.01). Reoperation for MVR was required in four patients in group ND vs. none in group D (p  less then  0.01). CONCLUSIONS A dedicated surgeon is able to spare the mitral valve in patients undergoing SM. This study emphasizes the importance of surgical expertise in this cohort.

Our secondary goal focused on quantifying specific preoperative risk factors that predispose children to postoperative complications. Methods We retrospectively reviewed 248 patients who underwent adenotonsillectomy at our ENT office from 2006 to 2011. We stratified these patients into two groups under 2 years old; and 2-3 years old. We identified 42 preoperative risk factors and 22 postoperative complications for each age group and conducted tests of statistical significance. Results We found that children under 24 months old had a statistically significant higher postoperative complication rate of 38% compared to 22.3% in children 2-3 years old (p = 0.0320, chi-squared test). For specific complications, younger children had a higher rate of respiratory distress within 24 h (p = 0.0355), endotracheal re-intubation (p = 0.0281), and retractions (p = 0.0281).   • BACKGROUND AND AIM Male sex is a risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Diabetes mellitus (DM) is associated with a doubled risk of HCC in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). We examined the relationship between serum total testosterone and HCC risk in male CHB patients with DM. METHODS We performed a retrospective cohort study of male CHB patients with DM between 2000 and 2017 using a territory-wide electronic healthcare database in Hong Kong. DM was defined by use of anti-diabetic medications, hemoglobin A1c ≥6.5%, and/or fasting glucose ≥7mmol/L in two measurements or ≥11.1mmol/L in one measurement. RESULTS Of 928 male CHB patients with DM, 83 (8.9%) developed HCC at a median (interquartile range) of 10.7 (6.1-14.6) years. Higher testosterone was associated with an elevated risk of HCC (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] per 1 SD increase 1.23, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.03-1.46; P=0.024). Upper tertile of testosterone (aHR 1.86, 95% CI 1.02-3.39, P=0.043), but not middle tertile (aHR 0.84, 95% CI 0.41-1.69 P=0.620), was associated with a higher risk of HCC than lower tertile. The cumulative incidence (95% CI) of HCC at 5, 10 and 15 years were 4.4% (2.5%-7.2%), 12.4% (8.7%-16.7%) and 19.1% (14.2%-24.5%), respectively, in patients in upper tertile of testosterone. By subgroup analysis, the association between testosterone and HCC was stronger in patients aged ≥50 years and those not receiving antiviral therapy. The expression of CD161 on NK cells, NKT cells, CD4+ T cells, and CD8+ T cells in peripheral blood among inactive SLE and active SLE, and normal controls group were determined using flow cytometry. The frequency and expression level of CD161 in lymphocyte subsets and its relationship with the quantity of regulatory T cells, anti-double stranded DNA antibody, the titer of antinuclear antibody were evaluated. Both the percentages of CD161+ subpopulation and mean fluorescence intensities (MFIs) of CD161 in CD8+ T cells and NKT cells significantly decreased in SLE patients compared to normal controls (P less then 0.001). The CD161 expression in CD8+ T cells and NKT cells also decreased in the anti-dsDNA (+) group (P less then 0.05). The counts of Treg cells were lower in SLE patients and were weakly correlated with the percentage of CD161 subpopulation (r=0.229, P=0.016) and MFIs of CD161 expression in CD8+ T cells (r=0.232, P = 0.014). To date, there have been few randomized clinical trials (RCT) examining whether obesity-related reductions in cerebral blood flow could be modified by weight loss. Further, it is unknown whether the behavioral intervention strategy for weight loss (i.e., diet alone or diet combined with exercise) differentially influences cerebral blood flow in adults with overweight or obesity. The primary aim of this study was to determine whether a 12-month RCT of exercise and diet increases cerebral blood flow in 125 midlife (Mean age ± SD = 44.63 ± 8.36 years) adults with overweight and obesity. Further, we evaluated whether weight loss via diet combined with aerobic exercise has an added effect on changes in cerebral blood flow compared to weight loss via diet alone and whether there were regionally specific effects of the type of behavioral intervention on cerebral blood flow patterns. Consistent with our predictions, a 12-month diet and exercise program resulting in 10% weight loss increased cerebral blood flow. These effects were widespread and extended throughout frontal, parietal, and subcortical regions. Further, there was some regional specificity of effects for both diet-only and diet combined with exercise. To this end, different groups of samples were made with different combinations of clay and biomass bottom ashes, from 100% clay to 100% biomass bottom ashes. These samples were shaped, sintered and subjected to the usual physical tests in ceramics. In turn, the mechanical resistance, color and leaching of the contaminating elements present were studied. The physical and mechanical tests showed that the results of all the families were adequate, achieving compressive strengths of over 20 MPa and leaching of the contaminating elements acceptable by the regulations. Therefore, a sustainable range of ceramics was developed, with specific properties (porosity, density, resistance and color), with a waste that is currently unused and sustainable with the environment.The eighth edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system for lung cancer was introduced in 2017 and included major revisions, especially of stage III. For the subgroup stage IIIA-N2 non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), surgical resection remains controversial due to heterogeneous disease entity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinicopathologic features and prognostic factors of patients with completely resected stage IIIA-N2 NSCLC. We retrospectively evaluated 77 consecutive patients with pathologic stage IIIA-N2 NSCLC (AJCC eighth edition) who underwent surgical resection with curative intent in China Medical University Hospital between 2006 and 2014. Survival analysis was conducted, using the Kaplan-Meier method. Prognostic factors predicting overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) were analyzed, using log-rank tests and multivariate Cox proportional hazards models. Of the 77 patients with pathologic stage IIIA-N2 NSCLC examined, 35 (45.5%) were diagnosed before surgery and 42 (54.5%) were diagnosed unexpectedly during surgery. The mean age of patients was 59 years, and the mean length of follow-up was 38.1 months. The overall one-, three-, and five-year OS rates were 91.9%, 61.3%, and 33.5%, respectively. Multivariate analysis showed that tumor size less then 3 cm (hazards ratio (HR) 0.373, p = 0.003) and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) approach (HR 0.383, p = 0.014) were significant predictors for improved OS. In this feasibility study, we demonstrate that the ash remaining after the DMA analyses can be used to quantify a wide range of other non-volatile elements (Ba, Be, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ga, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr, Th, and U) in that same sample of wood by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) after microwave-assisted acid digestion. Other elements (Ag, Cd, Cs, Rb, Tl, and V) exhibited poor recoveries, possibly due to losses during sample preparation. We assessed the accuracy with reference materials, spikes, and by comparison with EPA Method 3052 (Microwave Assisted Acid Digestion of Siliceous and Organically Based Matrices). These samples were shaped, sintered and subjected to the usual physical tests in ceramics. In turn, the mechanical resistance, color and leaching of the contaminating elements present were studied. The physical and mechanical tests showed that the results of all the families were adequate, achieving compressive strengths of over 20 MPa and leaching of the contaminating elements acceptable by the regulations. For the subgroup stage IIIA-N2 non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), surgical resection remains controversial due to heterogeneous disease entity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinicopathologic features and prognostic factors of patients with completely resected stage IIIA-N2 NSCLC. We retrospectively evaluated 77 consecutive patients with pathologic stage IIIA-N2 NSCLC (AJCC eighth edition) who underwent surgical resection with curative intent in China Medical University Hospital between 2006 and 2014. Survival analysis was conducted, using the Kaplan-Meier method. Prognostic factors predicting overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) were analyzed, using log-rank tests and multivariate Cox proportional hazards models. Of the 77 patients with pathologic stage IIIA-N2 NSCLC examined, 35 (45.5%) were diagnosed before surgery and 42 (54.5%) were diagnosed unexpectedly during surgery. The mean age of patients was 59 years, and the mean length of follow-up was 38.1 months. The overall one-, three-, and five-year OS rates were 91.9%, 61.3%, and 33.5%, respectively. Multivariate analysis showed that tumor size less then 3 cm (hazards ratio (HR) 0.373, p = 0.003) and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) approach (HR 0.383, p = 0.014) were significant predictors for improved OS. In this feasibility study, we demonstrate that the ash remaining after the DMA analyses can be used to quantify a wide range of other non-volatile elements (Ba, Be, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ga, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr, Th, and U) in that same sample of wood by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) after microwave-assisted acid digestion. Other elements (Ag, Cd, Cs, Rb, Tl, and V) exhibited poor recoveries, possibly due to losses during sample preparation. We assessed the accuracy with reference materials, spikes, and by comparison with EPA Method 3052 (Microwave Assisted Acid Digestion of Siliceous and Organically Based Matrices). For the first group of elements (deemed suitable for the method), recoveries ranged between 80% and 120% and the relative standard deviation was generally Ga ≈ Ag, with the other elements generally below the method detection limit (MDL).   • Known techniques for modification of polypropylene membranes (PPm) often require modification of the membrane in its entire volume (i.e. at the manufacturing stage), which may affect its properties. In the present work, the authors proposed a simple method for PPm hydrophilization. The process involves a two-step Fenton-type reaction, with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as a crosslinking agent and cumene hydroperoxide (CHP) as a source of free radicals. This hydrogel coating aims to enhance membrane hemocompatible and biocompatible properties. The biggest advantage of the proposed technique is the change of materials' surface properties, without interfering with its internal structure. Microscopic (SEM) and spectroscopic (FTIR-ATR) analyses confirmed the presence of hydrogel coating on PPm surfaces. Additionally, the evaluation of the surface density of the coating showed that the thickness of the coating increases with the reaction time and CHP concentration. The applied coatings significantly increase surface hydrophilicity (contact angle for PPm 128.58° ± 0.52°, for all modified surfaces less then 53.31° ± 2.03°). The cytotoxicity test (XTT assay) proved biocompatibility of the PVP coating - cell viability remained above 90% for all variants tested. The modification resulted in a decrease in fibrinogen adsorption (of at least about 16%) and in a number of surface-adhered platelets. The assay evaluating the amount of secreted cell adhesion molecules (ICAM-1) showed a significant reduction (of at least about 50%) in the expression of ICAM-1 for all hydrogel-modified surfaces.In this study, fabrication of a three-dimensional porous scaffold was performed using freeze gelation method. Recently, fabrication of scaffolds using polymer blends has become common for many tissue engineering applications due to their unique tunable properties. In this work, we fabricated alginate-gelatin porous hydrogels for wound healing application using a new method based on some modifications to the freeze-gelation method. Alginate and gelatin were mixed in three different ratios and the resulting solutions underwent freeze gelation to obtain 3D porous matrices. We analyzed the samples using different characterization tests. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results indicated that the freeze gelation method was successful in obtaining porous morphologies for all the fabricated alginate-gelatin samples as previously was seen in single-polymer fabrication using this method. The alginate to gelatin ratio affected swelling, biodegradation, cell culture and mechanical properties of the matrices. The scaffold with the lowest content of gelatin had the highest swelling ratio while biodegradation and cell proliferation and viability were increased with the gelatin content. Regarding the mechanical properties, as the gelatin content increased, the scaffold became more ductile and showed higher tensile strength. The in-vivo results also showed the biocompatibility of the blend scaffold and its positive role in wound healing process in rats. The low-cost procedure used in this study to fabricate the porous alginate-gelatin scaffolds can be adapted and modified to suit different tissue engineering applications.A thermo-responsive injectable bioactive glass (BAG) that has the ability to set at body temperature was prepared using pluronic F127 and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose as the carrier. The injectable composite has the advantage to fill irregular shape implantation sites and quick setting at body temperature. The structural and morphological analysis of injectable BAG before and after setting was done by using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The effect of an ultrasonic scaler for a quick setting of injectable BAG was also investigated. The ultrasonic scaler sets the BAG formulation three-folds faster than at body temperature and homogenized the dispersion. The in vitro bio-adhesion was studied in the bovine tooth in both artificial saliva and deionized water for periodic time intervals, i.e., day 7, 30, 90, and 180, which confirmed the apatite layer formation. The nanofibrous mats were fabricated by co-electrospining of polyanionic poly(γ-glutamic acid) (γ-PGA) and cationic photosensitizer 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(1-methylpyridinium-4-yl)porphyrin tetra (p-toluenesulfonate) (TMPyP) in aqueous solution and stabilized by the chemical crosslinking. The as-prepared nanofibrous mats can not only confer the moist microenvironment to the wound bed, but also provide potent bactericidal activity upon visible light irradiation by releasing the cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS). The antibacterial assay in vitro showed that they can effectively eradicate the board-spectrum bacteria at a relatively low loading dose of TMPyP (e.g., 0.1 wt%). Meanwhile, those nanofibrous mats showed good biocompatibility with no obvious adverse effects on mammalian cells and red blood cells (RBCs). The animal test in vivo suggested that the restrained inflammatory reaction and better wound healing could be achieved upon timely and effective antibacterial treatment with negligible local toxicities. This biocompatible and antibacterial γ-PGA-TMPyP nanofibrous mat may show great potential in practical infection-resistant applications, particularly for wound dressing applications.

  • Epidemics and evolution of many pathogens occur on similar timescales so that their dynamics are often entangled. Here, in a first step to study this problem theoretically, we analyze mutating pathogens spreading on simple SIR networks with grid-like connectivity. We have in mind the spatial aspect of epidemics, which often advance on transport links between hosts or groups of hosts such as cities or countries. We focus on the case of mutations that enhance an agent's infection rate. We uncover that the small-world property, i.e., the presence of long-range connections, makes the network very vulnerable, supporting frequent supercritical mutations and bringing the network from disease extinction to full blown epidemic. For very large numbers of long-range links, however, the effect reverses and we find a reduced chance for large outbreaks. We study two cases, one with discrete number of mutational steps and one with a continuous genetic variable, and we analyze various scaling regimes. For the continuous case we derive a Fokker-Planck-like equation for the probability density and solve it for small numbers of shortcuts using the WKB approximation. Our analysis supports the claims that a potentiating mutation in the transmissibility might occur during an epidemic wave and not necessarily before its initiation.As the primary indication for corneal transplantation, the pathogenesis of keratoconus remains elusive. Aiming to identify whether any mutation from extracellular-matrix (ECM)-related genes contributes to the patients with sporadic cases of keratoconus (KC) from Chinese Han population, one hundred and fifty-three participants in total were enrolled in our study, including fifty-three KC patients and one hundred healthy controls. Mutational analysis of three ECM-related genes (LOX, COL5A1 and TIMP3) with next-generation sequencing and Sanger sequencing was performed. To further confirm the function of three ECM-related genes in the pathogenesis of keratoconus, we performed Real-time Quantitative PCR in vitro. Results showed that three new sequence variants (c.95 G > A in LOX, c.1372 C > T in COL5A1 and c.476 C > T in TIMP3) were identified in aforementioned ECM-related genes in KC patients without being detected among the healthy controls. According to the results of QPCR, we found that the expression levels of LOX and TIMP3 were decreased in the KC patients, while COL5A1 showed no significant difference of expression. Here, to evaluate the feasibility of REVec for in vivo gene delivery, we conducted biodistribution analysis of transmission competent REVec and transmission defective ΔG-REVec in Lewis rats. Following intracranial administration of REVec, transgene expression was detected in various tissues. In contrast, transgene expression was only observed in the brain after ΔG-REVec administration. Low levels of vector shedding in the feces and blood and of neutralizing antibody in the serum were detected after REVec injection. In the brain, microglia, astrocytes and neurons were susceptible to REVec-mediated transduction. However, the animals administered with REVec, but not with ΔG-REVec showed a significant decrease in body weight compared to **** treated animals. Additionally, CD8 T cell infiltration was observed in the brain of these animals. In summary, we demonstrated that REVec promotes long-term transgene expression in vivo without causing high vector shedding or neutralizing antibody production; however, suggests the need to attenuate vector associated pathogenicity in the future.Direct quantitative measurements of nanoscale dynamical processes associated with structural relaxation and crystallization near the glass transition are a major experimental challenge. Here, we report x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy measurements of dynamics at the crystal-melt interface during the radiation induced formation of Se nano-crystallites in pure Se and in binary AsSe4 glass-forming liquids near their glass transition temperature. We observe a heterogeneous dynamical behaviour where the intensity correlation functions g2(q, t) exhibits either a compressed or a stretched exponential decay, depending on the size of the Se nano-crystallites. The corresponding relaxation timescale for the AsSe4 liquid increases as the temperature is raised, which can be attributed to changes in the chemical composition of the melt at the crystal-melt interface with the growth of the Se nano-crystallites.The photonic environment can significantly influence emission properties and interactions among atomic systems. In such scenarios, frequently the electric dipole approximation is assumed that is justified as long as the spatial extent of the atomic system is negligible compared to the spatial variations of the field. While this holds true for many canonical systems, it ceases to be applicable for more contemporary nanophotonic structures. To go beyond the electric dipole approximation, we propose and develop in this article an analytical framework to describe the impact of the photonic environment on emission and interaction properties of atomic systems beyond the electric dipole approximation. Particularly, we retain explicitly magnetic dipolar and electric quadrupolar contributions to the light-matter interactions. We exploit a field quantization scheme based on electromagnetic Green's tensors, suited for dispersive materials. We obtain expressions for spontaneous emission rate, Lamb shift, multipole-multipole shift and superradiance rate, all being modified with dispersive environment.

For very large numbers of long-range links, however, the effect reverses and we find a reduced chance for large outbreaks. We study two cases, one with discrete number of mutational steps and one with a continuous genetic variable, and we analyze various scaling regimes. For the continuous case we derive a Fokker-Planck-like equation for the probability density and solve it for small numbers of shortcuts using the WKB approximation. Aiming to identify whether any mutation from extracellular-matrix (ECM)-related genes contributes to the patients with sporadic cases of keratoconus (KC) from Chinese Han population, one hundred and fifty-three participants in total were enrolled in our study, including fifty-three KC patients and one hundred healthy controls. Mutational analysis of three ECM-related genes (LOX, COL5A1 and TIMP3) with next-generation sequencing and Sanger sequencing was performed. To further confirm the function of three ECM-related genes in the pathogenesis of keratoconus, we performed Real-time Quantitative PCR in vitro. Results showed that three new sequence variants (c.95 G > A in LOX, c.1372 C > T in COL5A1 and c.476 C > T in TIMP3) were identified in aforementioned ECM-related genes in KC patients without being detected among the healthy controls. According to the results of QPCR, we found that the expression levels of LOX and TIMP3 were decreased in the KC patients, while COL5A1 showed no significant difference of expression. However, little is known about its tissue tropism and persistence of gene expression in vivo. Here, to evaluate the feasibility of REVec for in vivo gene delivery, we conducted biodistribution analysis of transmission competent REVec and transmission defective ΔG-REVec in Lewis rats. Following intracranial administration of REVec, transgene expression was detected in various tissues. In contrast, transgene expression was only observed in the brain after ΔG-REVec administration. Low levels of vector shedding in the feces and blood and of neutralizing antibody in the serum were detected after REVec injection. In the brain, microglia, astrocytes and neurons were susceptible to REVec-mediated transduction. However, the animals administered with REVec, but not with ΔG-REVec showed a significant decrease in body weight compared to mock treated animals. Additionally, CD8 T cell infiltration was observed in the brain of these animals. In summary, we demonstrated that REVec promotes long-term transgene expression in vivo without causing high vector shedding or neutralizing antibody production; however, suggests the need to attenuate vector associated pathogenicity in the future.Direct quantitative measurements of nanoscale dynamical processes associated with structural relaxation and crystallization near the glass transition are a major experimental challenge. These type of processes have been primarily treated as macroscopic phenomena within the framework of phenomenological models and bulk experiments. Here, we report x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy measurements of dynamics at the crystal-melt interface during the radiation induced formation of Se nano-crystallites in pure Se and in binary AsSe4 glass-forming liquids near their glass transition temperature. We observe a heterogeneous dynamical behaviour where the intensity correlation functions g2(q, t) exhibits either a compressed or a stretched exponential decay, depending on the size of the Se nano-crystallites. The corresponding relaxation timescale for the AsSe4 liquid increases as the temperature is raised, which can be attributed to changes in the chemical composition of the melt at the crystal-melt interface with the growth of the Se nano-crystallites.The photonic environment can significantly influence emission properties and interactions among atomic systems. In such scenarios, frequently the electric dipole approximation is assumed that is justified as long as the spatial extent of the atomic system is negligible compared to the spatial variations of the field. While this holds true for many canonical systems, it ceases to be applicable for more contemporary nanophotonic structures. To go beyond the electric dipole approximation, we propose and develop in this article an analytical framework to describe the impact of the photonic environment on emission and interaction properties of atomic systems beyond the electric dipole approximation. Particularly, we retain explicitly magnetic dipolar and electric quadrupolar contributions to the light-matter interactions. We exploit a field quantization scheme based on electromagnetic Green's tensors, suited for dispersive materials. We obtain expressions for spontaneous emission rate, Lamb shift, multipole-multipole shift and superradiance rate, all being modified with dispersive environment.

The absolute values of lymphocytes (LYMPH#) and percentages of lymphocytes (LYMPH%) were measured by an automatic blood analyzer. Results In the radon group, the numbers of CD3+ (Z = -0.140, P > .05) and CD4+CD8- (Z = -0.964, P > .05) T cells were higher, as compared with the controls, but this difference was not significant. In addition, the number of CD4-CD8+ (t = -2.141, P .05) showed no significant change. N-acetylcysteine (NAC), an antioxidant precursor to glutathione, has recently been studied for a variety of neuropsychiatric disorders. There is growing evidence to support its use to decrease irritability and self-injurious behaviors in youth with ASD. However, previous studies were limited to outpatient youth with mild symptoms of irritability, maintained on stable medication regimens, who do not meet criteria for higher levels of care. We describe the use of NAC among 4 youths (14-17 years) with ASD who had Aberrant Behavior Checklist-Irritability (ABC-I) scores of ≥ 20 and other psychotropic medication trials prior to treatment with NAC. In all of the cases, NAC appeared to be well tolerated. There was a reduction of symptoms of irritability and/or antipsychotic medication dosages in these cases; despite this, the authors cannot know whether use of NAC or other medication or behavioral strategies were responsible for such changes because this study was not a controlled trial. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends developing mechanisms for proactively identifying patients at risk for medication-related adverse events and failed reconciliation. This study's primary purpose was to evaluate pediatric patients admitted to identify risk factors requiring pharmacist intervention during medication reconciliation (MedRec). METHODS This prospective study included pediatric patients admitted during the study time frame until the target population of 500 patient encounters was achieved. During each admission, pharmacy staff completed a medication history, after which a pediatric pharmacist completed a MedRec, as is standard hospital practice. The primary outcome was identification of factors for high-risk transitions of care during pediatric admissions based on the need for pharmacist interventions during the MedRec process. RESULTS In total, 331 interventions were made for 127 patients (median 2; range, 1-12). Of the 331 interventions, 196 (59.2%) were classified as being of moderate or significant severity. Although patients with at least 2 home medications were significantly more likely to require any intervention (p less then 0.0001), patients with 5 or more home medications were more likely to have a significant intervention. CONCLUSION Identifying patients with home medications could allow for focused efforts to intervene. Also, patients admitted to the PICU or those with cardiology- or endocrinology-related diagnoses should be prioritized for MedRec process, because of the likelihood of requiring multiple home medications.
