    The aim of this in vitro study is to evaluate the accuracy of implant position using mucosal supported surgical guides, produced by a desktop 3D printer.

    Ninety implants (Bone Level Roxolid, 4.1 mm × 10 mm, Straumann, Villerat, Switzerland) were placed in fifteen mandibular casts (Bonemodels, Castellón de la Plana, Spain). A mucosa-supported guide was designed and printed for each of the fifteen casts. After placement of the implants, the location was assessed by scanning the cast and scan bodies with an intra-oral scanner (Primescan
    , Dentsply Sirona, York, PA, USA). Two comparisons were performed one with the mucosa as a reference, and one where only the implants were aligned. Angular, coronal and apical deviations were measured.

    The mean implant angular deviation for tissue and implant alignment were 3.25° (SD 1.69°) and 2.39° (SD 1.42°) respectively, the coronal deviation 0.82 mm (SD 0.43 mm) and 0.45 mm (SD 0.31 mm) and the apical deviation 0.99 mm (SD 0.45 mm) and 0.71 mm (SD 0.43 mm). All three variables were significantly different between the tissue and implant alignment (

In this paper, we present a copper-based multi-dimensional filler composed of three-dimensional microscale copper flakes, one-dimensional multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and zero-dimensional copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) to create a safe and low-cost TIM with a high thermal conductivity. Cu NPs synthesized by microwave irradiation of a precursor solution were bound to MWCNTs and mixed with copper flakes and polyimide matrix to obtain a TIM paste, which was stable even in a high-temperature environment. The cross-plane thermal conductivity of the copper-based TIM was 36 W/m/K. Owing to its high thermal conductivity and low cost, the copper-based TIM could be an industrially useful heat-dissipating material in the future.

    The Self-assembling Peptide Hydrogel [SAPH, PuraMatrix], a fully synthetic peptide solution designed to replace collagen, has recently been used to promote mucosal regeneration in iatrogenic ulcers following endoscopic submucosal dissection. Herein, we evaluated its utility in ulcer repair using a rat model of topical trinitrobenzene sulphonic acid [TNBS]-induced colonic injuries.

    Colonic injuries were generated in 7-week-old rats by injecting an ethanol solution [35%, 0.2 mL] containing 0.15 M TNBS into the colonic lumen. At 2 and 4 days post-injury, the rats were subjected to endoscopy, and SAPH [or vehicle] was topically applied to the ulcerative lesion. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry [TOF-SIMS] was used to detect SAPH. Colonic expression of cytokines and wound healing-related factors were assessed using real-time polymerase chain reaction or immunohistochemistry.

    SAPH treatment significantly reduced ulcer length [p = 0.0014] and area [p = 0.045], while decreasing colonic weight [p = 0.0375] and histological score [p = 0.0005] 7 days after injury. SAPH treatment also decreased colonic expression of interleukin [IL]-1α [p = 0.0233] and IL-6[p = 0.0343] and increased that of claudin-1 [p = 0.0486] and villin [p = 0.0183], and β-catenin staining [p = 0.0237]. TOF-SIMS revealed lesional retention of SAPH on day 7 post-injury. Furthermore, SAPH significantly promoted healing in in vivo mechanical intestinal wound models.

    Primary aldosteronism (PA) is associated with impaired quality of life (QoL). Autonomous cortisol cosecretion (ACS) is a relevant phenotype of PA, which could contribute to depression and anxiety disorders. This has not been investigated so far.

    To evaluate the prevalence of depression and anxiety in PA patients according to ACS.

    We performed testing for hypercortisolism and evaluated anxiety, depression and QoL by self-rating questionnaires in newly diagnosed PA patients of the German Conn's Registry; 298 patients were reevaluated at follow-up.

    In the overall cohort, scores for anxiety (P < .001), depression (P < .001), and QoL (mental P = .021; physical P = .015) improved significantly at follow-up. This improvement was seen in both subgroups of patients with and without ACS, with the exception of the mental subscore in no-ACS patients. Analysis for sex differences showed that anxiety decreased significantly in females with ACS and no-ACS, whereas males with no-ACS failed to improve. Depression improved significantly in males and females with ACS (P = .004, P = 0.011 respectively), but not in those with no-ACS. Physical subscore of QoL improved significantly (P = .023) in females with ACS and mental subscore (P = .027) in males with ACS, whereas no differences were seen for the no-ACS groups.

    Analyses were based on The Danish Childhood Obesity Data- and Biobank, a cross-sectional study including children and adolescents, aged 6 to 19 years, from an obesity clinic group (n = 1978) and from a population-based group (n = 2334). Fasting concentrations of plasma total GLP-1 and quantitative CMR factors were assessed. The effects of GLP-1 as a predictor of CMR risk outcomes were examined by multiple linear and logistic regression modeling.

PacBio long-read sequences from hop were assembled with FALCON and partially phased with FALCON-Unzip. Comparative analysis of haplotype sequences provides insight into selective pressures that have driven evolution in hop. We discovered genes with greater sequence divergence enriched for stress-response, growth, and flowering functions in the draft phased assembly. With improved resolution of long terminal retrotransposons (LTRs) due to long-read sequencing, we found that hop is over 70% repetitive. We identified a homolog of cannabidiolic acid synthase (CBDAS) that is expressed in multiple tissues.     Peri-implantitis (PI) is an inflammatory disease associated with peri-implant bone loss and impaired healing potential. There is limited evidence about the presence of mesenchymal stromal cells (****) and their regenerative properties within the granulation tissue (GT) of infrabony peri-implantitis defects. The aim of the present study was to characterize the cells derived from the GT of infrabony PI lesions (peri-implantitis derived mesenchymal stromal cells-PIMSCs).

    PIMSC cultures were established from GT harvested from PI lesions with a pocket probing depth ≥6 mm, bleeding on probing/suppuration, and radiographic evidence of an infrabony component from four systemically healthy individuals. Cultures were analyzed for embryonic (SSEA4, NANOG, SOX2, OCT4A), mesenchymal (CD90, CD73, CD105, CD146, STRO1) and hematopoietic (CD34, CD45) stem cell markers using flow cytometry.   • This study aimed at creating a zebrafish screening model for diabetic retinopathy, and evaluated the effects of aflibercept, which is being used to treated diabetic retinopathy. A morphological change occurred at 160 mM of glucose. The survival and hatching rate decreased in a dose-dependent manner. In the 130 mM glucose group, the retinal vessel diameter was more than double that in the normal group. The zebrafish embryo morphology changed in 200 μg/mL and 400 μg/mL at aflibercept. The survival and hatching rate decrease at 400 μg/mL. Aflibercept 100 μg/mL was a nontoxic and effective dose for the zebrafish diabetic retinopathy model. The expression of diabetic retinopathy inflammatory markers was increased in hyperglycemia. But the inflammation was improved by aflibercept in the zebrafish eye. In a zebrafish diabetic retinopathy model, the diameters of retinal vessels were reduced after treatment with aflibercept, and molecular biological and histopathological efficacy was confirmed. This model can serve for screening of new drug candidates for treatment of in diabetic retinopathy.

Driving under the influence of cannabis is an important contributor to the high rates of **** among youth. Understanding the specific impact of cannabis on the driving performance outcomes of young drivers can inform injury prevention, education, and intervention strategies.

    This systematic literature review (SLR) aims to determine the Class (I- highest to IV-lowest) of evidence and level of confidence (A-high to U-insufficient) in the effects of cannabis on the driving performance of young drivers.

    Registered in PROSPERO (#CRD42020180541), this SLR searched seven data bases and appraised the quality and confidence in the evidence using an established research methodology.

    Class II evidence suggests that THC is likely to reduce mean speed, headway distance, and reaction time; and increase lane and steering wheel position variability among young drivers (Level B, moderate confidence).

    This study shows that there is a moderate to low level of confidence on the impact of cannabis on the specific driving performance outcomes of young drivers. A need remains for Class I and II studies that focus on the specific effects on young drivers, distinguish between the biological and socially constructed variables of sex and gender, and includes larger and more representative samples.

In efforts to improve safety, an enormous interest has been shown in developing statistical models for intersection crash prediction and explanation. The selection of an adequate form of the statistical model is of great importance for the accurate estimation of crash frequency and the correct identification of crash contributing factors. Using a six-year crash data, road infrastructure and geometric design data, and traffic flow data of urban intersections, we applied three different functional forms of negative binomial models (i.e., NB-1, NB-2, NB-P) and a generalized Poisson (GP) model to develop safety performance functions (SPF) by crash severity for signalized and unsignalized intersections. This paper presents the relationships found between the explanatory variables and the expected crash frequency. It reports the comparison of different models for total, injury & fatal, and property damage only crashes in order to obtain ones with the maximum estimation accuracy. The comparison of models was based on the goodness of fit and the prediction performance measures. The fitted models showed that the traffic flow and several variables related to road infrastructure and geometric design significantly influence the intersection crash frequency. Further, the goodness of fit and the prediction performance measures revealed that the NB-P model outperformed other models in most crash severity levels for signalized intersections. For the unsignalized intersections, the GP model was the best performing model. When only the NB models were compared, the functional form NB-P performed better than the traditional NB-1 and, more specifically, the NB-2 models. In conclusion, our findings suggest a potential improvement in the estimation accuracy of the SPFs for urban intersections by applying the NB-P and GP models.Despite nearly universal texting while driving bans in U.S. states, distracted driving still poses a major risk for American motorists and pedestrians on a daily basis.     This study aimed at creating a zebrafish screening model for diabetic retinopathy, and evaluated the effects of aflibercept, which is being used to treated diabetic retinopathy. A morphological change occurred at 160 mM of glucose. The survival and hatching rate decreased in a dose-dependent manner. In the 130 mM glucose group, the retinal vessel diameter was more than double that in the normal group. The zebrafish embryo morphology changed in 200 μg/mL and 400 μg/mL at aflibercept. The survival and hatching rate decrease at 400 μg/mL. Aflibercept 100 μg/mL was a nontoxic and effective dose for the zebrafish diabetic retinopathy model. The expression of diabetic retinopathy inflammatory markers was increased in hyperglycemia. But the inflammation was improved by aflibercept in the zebrafish eye. In efforts to improve safety, an enormous interest has been shown in developing statistical models for intersection crash prediction and explanation. The selection of an adequate form of the statistical model is of great importance for the accurate estimation of crash frequency and the correct identification of crash contributing factors. Using a six-year crash data, road infrastructure and geometric design data, and traffic flow data of urban intersections, we applied three different functional forms of negative binomial models (i.e., NB-1, NB-2, NB-P) and a generalized Poisson (GP) model to develop safety performance functions (SPF) by crash severity for signalized and unsignalized intersections. This paper presents the relationships found between the explanatory variables and the expected crash frequency. It reports the comparison of different models for total, injury & fatal, and property damage only crashes in order to obtain ones with the maximum estimation accuracy. The comparison of models was based on the goodness of fit and the prediction performance measures. The fitted models showed that the traffic flow and several variables related to road infrastructure and geometric design significantly influence the intersection crash frequency. Further, the goodness of fit and the prediction performance measures revealed that the NB-P model outperformed other models in most crash severity levels for signalized intersections. For the unsignalized intersections, the GP model was the best performing model. When only the NB models were compared, the functional form NB-P performed better than the traditional NB-1 and, more specifically, the NB-2 models. The host innate and adaptative immune responses play critical roles in the defense against leishmaniasis. However, Leishmania parasites also manipulate the host immune response for their survival and replication. In addition, other factors such as sand fly salivary proteins and microbiota also promote disease susceptibility and parasite spread by modulating local immune response. Thus, a complex interplay between parasite, sand fly and the host immunity governs disease severity and outcome. In this review, we discuss the host immune response during Leishmania infection and highlight the factors associated with resistance or susceptibility.
    The use of aural thermometry as a method for accurately measuring internal temperature has been questioned. No researchers have examined whether aural thermometry can accurately measure internal body temperature in patients with exertional heat stroke (EHS).

    Processed nerve allograft (PNA) is an alternative to autograft for the reconstruction of peripheral nerves. We hypothesize that peripheral nerve repair with PNA in a military population will have a low rate of meaningful recovery (M ≥ 3) because of the frequency of blasting mechanisms and large zones of injury.

    A retrospective review of the military Registry of Avance Nerve Graft Evaluating Utilization and Outcomes for the Reconstruction of Peripheral Nerve Discontinuities database was conducted at the Walter Reed Peripheral Nerve Consortium. All adult active duty military patients who underwent any peripheral nerve repair with PNA for complete nerve injuries augmented with PNA visit were included. Motor strength and sensory function were reported as a consensus from the multidisciplinary Peripheral Nerve Consortium. Motor and sensory testing was conducted in accordance with the British Medical Research Council.

    A total of 23 service members with 25 nerve injuries (3 sensory and 22 mixed motor/sensory) underwent reconstruction with PNA. The average age was 30 years and the majority were male (96%). The most common injury was to the sciatic nerve (28%) from a complex mechanism (gunshot, blast, compression, and avulsion). The average defect was 77 mm. Twenty-four percent of patients achieved a meaningful motor recovery. Longer follow-up was correlated with improved postoperative motor function (r = 0.49 and P = .03).

All adult active duty military patients who underwent any peripheral nerve repair with PNA for complete nerve injuries augmented with PNA visit were included. Motor strength and sensory function were reported as a consensus from the multidisciplinary Peripheral Nerve Consortium. Motor and sensory testing was conducted in accordance with the British Medical Research Council. A total of 23 service members with 25 nerve injuries (3 sensory and 22 mixed motor/sensory) underwent reconstruction with PNA. The average age was 30 years and the majority were male (96%). The recruitment was postponed due to COVID-19 and will start in January 2021.

    ECAP is a relevant example for assessing how users (ie, parents) handle not only health information but the various and continuous changes, uncertainties, and controversies attached to it.     Type 2 diabetes affects 30 million Americans, representing a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Self-management support is an important component of chronic illness care and is a key pillar of the chronic care model. Face-to-face teaching and patient education materials suffer from being static or incompatible with mobile lifestyles. Digital apps provide a self-management support alternative that is convenient and scalable.

    This pilot study tested the real-world deployment of a self-guided mobile app for diabetes education (Time2Focus app; MicroMass Communications Inc, Cary, NC), which utilizes evidence-based content and gamification to deliver an interactive learning experience.

    Primary care providers were approached for permission to invite their patients to participate. Eligible patients were 18 to 89 years of age, had a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) ≥8% and <12% in the past 3 months, an active online patient portal account (tied to the electronic health record), om self-management support may be delayed. Further research is needed to address how to increase engagement through self-management support and to investigate if follow up over a longer period demonstrates a significant change in outcomes such as HbA1c.
    Participants who engaged in all 12 levels of the Time2Focus mobile app showed an improvement in diabetes self-efficacy and a decrease in severity of illness perceptions. The decrease in HbA1c observed in app users relative to nonusers during this limited pilot study was not statistically significant. The Argus II Retinal Prosthesis is a surgically implanted medical device that delivers electrical stimulation to the retina. It is intended to produce a form of artificial vision for blind people with severe-to-profound retinitis pigmentosa by stimulating the remaining viable retinal cells to induce visual perception. This study has been initiated by National Health Service England's Commissioning through Evaluation program and funded through the National Institute of Health Research of the United Kingdom.

Athletes and performers represent a unique population; they stand at the intersection of racial and socioeconomic health inequity and societal expectations for entertainment. Returning to the field or stage suddenly, unscathed by effects of global viral and racial pandemics, is impossible. Instead, athletes face resuming play with a sobering realisation the pursuit of health is not fulfilled with the same tenacity for everyone. This editorial is to raise awareness to disparities that exist for athletes and performing artist athletes during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.

    We obtained from the Japan Sport Association study subjects' biographical information, information on lifestyles and medical data. Missing data were obtained from online databases. In this narrative review, we consider the associations between hyperuricemia, hyperglycemia, atherosclerosis and thrombosis. Furthermore, we comment on the available evidence linking elevated SUA levels with the incidence and outcomes of coronary heart disease, stroke, peripheral artery disease and non-alcoholic fatty liver in subjects with T2DM. The effects of antidiabetic drugs (e.g. metformin, pioglitazone, sulfonylureas, dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitors, glucagonlike peptide-1 receptor agonists, sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors and insulin) on SUA concentrations are also reviewed.

Staphylococcus aureus is a notable bacterium, with high pathogenic potential and demonstrated resistance to conventional antibiotics. Considering the importance of discovering novel compounds to combat antibiotic resistance, our group previously demonstrated the antibacterial properties of limonene, a compound present in the essential oils of several plant species.

    This study aimed to investigate the potential of limonene as an efflux pump (EP) inhibitor in Staphylococcus aureus strains RN-4220 and IS-58, which carry EPs for erythromycin (MrsA) and tetracycline (TetK), respectively.

    The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of limonene and other efflux pump inhibitors were determined through the broth microdilution method. A reduction in the ****of ethidium bromide was used as a parameter of EP inhibition.

    While limonene was not shown to exhibit direct antibacterial effects against EP-carrying strains, in association with ethidium bromide and antibiotics, this compound demonstrated enhanced antibacterial activity, indicating the inhibition of the MrsA and TetK pumps.

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible different induction effects of CYP3A4 by PZQ racemate and enantiomers via the pregnane X receptor (PXR) and the effect of PXR polymorphism on the induction potency of PZQs.

    The dual-luciferase reporter gene systems constructed in HepG2 cells were used to measure the abilities of PZQs to induce CYP3A4 expression mediated by PXR. The mRNA and protein levels of CYP3A4 were evaluated by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and western blotting, respectively.

Data of larger cohort are needed to determine reversibility of these changes.Background Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a dramatically harmful disease in the neonatal period, in particular common in preterm infants, and our study was to determine related factors of PDA in preterm infants. Methods A comprehensive literature review was conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science. The pooled odds ratio and standard mean difference were calculated to compare dichotomous and continuous variables, respectively. In addition, we also assessed the heterogeneity and publication bias and carried out sensitivity analysis for each related factor. Results We included 45 studies with 87,419 individuals. After the primary analysis and a series of adjustments, results showed chorioamnionitis, lower gestational age, lower birth weight, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, intraventricular hemorrhage, necrotizing enterocolitis, respiratory distress syndrome, sepsis, surfactant treatment, ventilation, and lower platelet count had a positive correlation with PDA, while small for gestational age decreased the incidence of PDA in preterm infants. Besides, premature rupture of membranes, preeclampsia, antenatal steroids, male gender, mean platelet volume, and platelet distribution width were found to have no statistically significant relationship with PDA. Conclusion Preterm infants with more immature characteristics generally have a higher likelihood to develop PDA. Our paper report a 1-year-old girl with functional chronic duodenal obstruction caused by megaduodenum.Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a severe autosomal recessively inherited disorder of the red blood cell characterized by erythrocyte deformation caused by the polymerization of the abnormal hemoglobin, which leads to erythrocyte deformation and triggers downstream pathological changes. These include abnormal rheology, vaso-occlusion, ischemic tissue damage, and hemolysis-associated endothelial dysfunction. These acute and chronic physiologic disturbances contribute to morbidity, organ dysfunction, and diminished survival. Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) from HLA-matched or unrelated donors or haploidentical related donors or genetically modified autologous hematopoietic progenitor cells is performed with the intent of cure or long-term amelioration of disease manifestations. Excellent outcomes have been observed following HLA-identical matched related donor HCT. The majority of SCD patients do not have an available HLA-identical sibling donor. Increasingly, however, they have the option of undergoing HCT from unrelated HLA matched or related haploidentical donors. The preliminary results of transplantation of autologous hematopoietic progenitor cells genetically modified by adding a non-sickling gene or by genomic editing to increase expression of fetal hemoglobin are encouraging. These approaches are being evaluated in early-phase clinical trials. In performing HCT in patients with SCD, careful consideration must be given to patient and donor selection, conditioning and graft-vs.-host disease regimen, and pre-HCT evaluation and management during and after HCT. Sociodemographic factors may also impact awareness of and access to HCT. Further, there is a substantial decisional dilemma in HCT with complex tradeoffs between the possibility of amelioration of disease manifestations and early or late complications of HCT. The performance of HCT for SCD requires careful multidisciplinary collaboration and shared decision making between the physician and informed patients and caregivers.

Methods A comprehensive literature review was conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science. The pooled odds ratio and standard mean difference were calculated to compare dichotomous and continuous variables, respectively. In addition, we also assessed the heterogeneity and publication bias and carried out sensitivity analysis for each related factor. Results We included 45 studies with 87,419 individuals. After the primary analysis and a series of adjustments, results showed chorioamnionitis, lower gestational age, lower birth weight, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, intraventricular hemorrhage, necrotizing enterocolitis, respiratory distress syndrome, sepsis, surfactant treatment, ventilation, and lower platelet count had a positive correlation with PDA, while small for gestational age decreased the incidence of PDA in preterm infants. Besides, premature rupture of membranes, preeclampsia, antenatal steroids, male gender, mean platelet volume, and platelet distribution width were found to have no statistically significant relationship with PDA. Conclusion Preterm infants with more immature characteristics generally have a higher likelihood to develop PDA. The prevention, diagnosis, and management of PDA may depend on these results, and effective measures can be taken accordingly.Since the beginning of the severe SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, an increasing number of countries reported cases of a systemic hyperinflammatory condition defined as multi-system inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). We report on a cohort of 6 Swiss children with SARS-CoV2 related MIS-C presenting with clinical features compatible with Incomplete KD and Toxic Shock Syndrome associated to a cytokine storm. Serum cytokine profile investigations showed increased IL1RA levels (8 to 22-fold) in 5 of the 6 patients (one patient had not been tested), whereas, IL-6 serum levels were increased only in the 3 patients of the 6 who were tested. With exception of one patient who had only benefited by Anakinra, all patients received at least one dose of IVIG. One patient has only received Anakinra with favorable evolution, and three patients had also a steroid treatment. In addition to all this anti-inflammatory medication two patients have also received one dose of anti-IL6.
