Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) were also assessed pre-operation,1 week and 1 month after surgery. The MTF values at spatial frequencies of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 cycles/degree (c/d) were selected. We used optical coherence tomography (OCT) to assess the macular thickness of different regions pre-operatively and1month after the surgery. RESULTS In PCS group, we found the statice macular thickness changes, but better optical quality recovery. Phys. 65, 843 (1988)], this paper demonstrates the necessity to account for a complete ensemble of all excited O3 PESs that correlate with O2(X) and O(3P) when high-temperature kinetics is of interest. At the same time, it is found that the Varandas 11A' O3 PES adequately describes vibrational energy transfer and dissociating dynamics when compared to the most recent 11A' O3 PES by Varga et al. [J. Chem Phys. 147, 154312 (2017)]. The differences between this new dataset and previous rate coefficients are quantified by the master equation model.The key process in organic solar cell operation is charge separation under light illumination. Due to the low dielectric constant of organic materials, the Coulomb attraction energy within the interfacial charge-transfer state (CTS) is larger than the thermal energy. Understanding the mechanism of charge separation at the organic donor/acceptor interface still remains a challenge and requires knowledge of the CTS temporal evolution. To address this problem, the CTS in the benchmark photovoltaic blend PCDTBT/PC71BM was studied by the out-of-phase Electron Spin Echo (ESE). The protocol for determining the CTS geminate recombination rate for certain electron-hole distances was developed. Simulating the out-of-phase ESE trace for the CTS in the PCDTBT/PC71BM blend allows precise determination of the electron-hole distance distribution function and its evolution with the increase in the delay after the laser flash. Distances of charge separation up to 6 nm were detected upon thermalization at a temperature of 20 K. Assuming the exponential decay of the recombination rate, the attenuation factor β = 0.08 Å-1 is estimated for the PCDTBT/PC71BM blend. Such a low attenuation factor is probably caused by a high degree of hole delocalization along the PCDTBT chain.Dissipaton-equation-of-motion (DEOM) theory [Y. J. Yan, J. Chem. Phys. 140, 054105 (2014)] is an exact and nonperturbative many-particle method for open quantum systems. The existing dissipaton algebra also treats the dynamics of hybrid bath solvation coordinates. The dynamics of conjugate momentums remain to be addressed within the DEOM framework. In this work, we establish this missing ingredient, the dissipaton algebra on solvation momentums, with rigorous validations against necessary and sufficient criteria. The resulted phase-space DEOM theory will serve as a solid ground for further developments of various practical methods toward a broad range of applications. We illustrate this novel dissipaton algebra with the phase-space DEOM-evaluation on heat current fluctuation.We develop two novel transition path sampling (TPS) algorithms for harvesting ensembles of rare event trajectories using non-equilibrium dynamics. These methods have the advantage that no predefined reaction coordinate is needed. Instead, an instantaneous reaction coordinate is based on the current path. We found that the MEL is negative, i.e., the EL decreases with the applied field strength, B. In addition, the MEL(B) response has a Lorentzian line shape whose width depends on the perovskite used. We interpret the MEL(B) response using the "Δg mechanism" in which the spin of the injected electron-hole (e-h) pairs oscillates between singlet and triplet configurations due to different precession frequencies of the electron and hole constituents that originate from the difference, Δg, in the electron and hole gyromagnetic constants, g. In this model, the MEL(B) linewidth is inversely proportional to the spin lifetime and Δg. The model used is validated by directly measuring the spin lifetime of photogenerated e-h pairs using the circularly polarized pump-probe transmission technique with 100 fs resolution.

  • Episodic memory was inferred when the three scene properties (identity, location and time) were correct. The measure of non-episodic memory consisted of those trials in which the identity was correctly remembered, but not the location or time. Our results show that episodic memory for congruent stimuli is significantly superior to that for incongruent ones. In sharp contrast, non-episodic measures found superior memory for targets in the presence of incongruent distractors. Our results demonstrate that response compatibility affects the encoding of episodic and non-episodic memory traces in different ways.Residential treatment (RT) serves 311,000 children and adolescents per year and has been described as a "last resort" by families, healthcare providers, and insurance payors as it is highly disruptive and costly. The purpose of this study was to explore mothers' accounts of the strategies and services they used before admitting their adolescent to RT as well as to understand the barriers they encountered in their adolescent's treatment trajectory. This was a cross-sectional study in which 15 mothers of adolescents currently or previously in RT completed 1-h phone interviews. Data were analyzed using content analysis generating two themes and seven subthemes. The first theme, 'the lead up to residential treatment,' consists of descriptions of the treatment modalities before RT and mothers' initial impressions of RT. Analyses assessed mean facilitator adherence and competency overall, by study arm, and by session; and, examined site, facilitator, and client-specific effects. There were no significant differences found between study arms. Findings show paraprofessionals can deliver MB with similar fidelity as mental health professionals.PURPOSE To evaluate breast cancer (**) molecular subtypes association with reproductive characteristics and an index of cumulative exposure to endogenous estrogens (EEI) in Mexican women. METHODS We performed a study of incident cases and population controls in northern Mexico. We included ** cases with tumor molecular classification in their medical records (n = 509), and classified them as HR+/HER2- (ER+ and/or PR+ and HER2-) (n = 289), HER2+ (HR+ or HR-) (n = 117) or triple negative (TN) (n = 103). We matched controls (n = 1030) by age and place of residence with index cases. Women were interviewed about their reproductive history, from which the EEI was developed. We used logistic regression models to estimate ** molecular subtypes associations with reproductive characteristics and EEI. RESULTS The EEI was higher in all subtypes compared to controls (Median HR+/HER2- 27.25, HER2+ 26.8, TN 24.2 vs. controls 22.8 years, p  less then  0.05), and was associated with HR+/HER2- (ORT3 vs. T1 = 2.58, 95% CI 1.77-3.55, p-trend  less then  0.001) and HER2+ (ORT3 vs. T1 = 4.17, 95% CI 2.15-8.08, p-trend  less then  0.001) **. Additionally, HR+/HER2- tumors were positively associated with age at first pregnancy and age at menopause, and negatively with age at menarche, parity and breastfeeding. The HER2+ subtype was associated in the same direction as HR+/HER2- tumors with all the reproductive characteristics except for age at menarche. TN tumors were negatively associated with parity and breastfeeding. CONCLUSION Endogenous estrogens exposure throughout Mexican women reproductive life may contribute to the development of all but TN **, however, these findings should be confirmed in other Hispanic populations.PURPOSE Despite the benefits of adjuvant endocrine therapy (AET) for reducing recurrence and mortality risks after hormone-sensitive breast cancer, AET adherence is sub-optimal for a high proportion of women. Our objectives were to (1) identify 5-year AET adherence trajectory groups; (2) describe trajectory groups according to adherence measures traditionally used (i.e., Proportion of Days Covered); and (3) explore factors associated with trajectories. METHODS We conducted a 5-year cohort study using data from a French national study that included AET dispensing data. Women diagnosed with first non-metastatic breast cancer and having at least 1 AET dispensing in the 12 months after diagnosis were included. Group-based trajectory modeling was used to identify adherence trajectory groups by clustering similar patterns of monthly AET dispensing. Multinomial logistic regressions were used to identify factors associated with trajectories. RESULTS Among 674 women, five AET adherence trajectory groups were identified (1) quick decline and stop (5.2% of women); (2) moderate decline and stop (6.4%); (3) slow decline (17.2%); (4) high adherence (30.0%); and (5) maintenance of very high adherence (41.2%). Mean 5-year Proportion of Days Covered varied from 10 to 97% according to trajectories. Women who did not receive chemotherapy or a personalized care plan were more likely to belong to trajectories where AET adherence declined and stopped. CONCLUSION Our results provide information on the diversity of longitudinal AET adherence patterns, the timing of decline and discontinuation and associated factors that could inform healthcare professionals.

  • Spermatogenesis involves coordinated processes, including meiosis, to produce functional gametes. We previously reported Topaz1 as a germ cell-specific gene highly conserved in vertebrates. Topaz1 knockout males are sterile with testes that lack haploid germ cells because of meiotic arrest after prophase I. To better characterize Topaz1 -/- testes, we used RNA-sequencing analyses at two different developmental stages (P16 and P18). The absence of TOPAZ1 disturbed the expression of genes involved in microtubule and/or cilium mobility, biological processes required for spermatogenesis. Moreover, a quarter of P18 dysregulated genes are long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), and three of them are testis-specific and located in spermatocytes, their expression starting between P11 and P15. In this review, we discuss various subpopulations of endothelial cells in the mammalian heart, which spatiotemporally regulate critical cellular and molecular processes of heart development via unique sets of angiocrine signaling pathways. In particular, elucidation of intercellular communication among the functional cell types in the developing heart has recently been accelerated by the use of single-cell sequencing. Specifically, we overview the heterogeneic nature of cardiac endothelial cells and their contribution to heart tube and chamber formation, myocardial trabeculation and compaction, and endocardial cushion and valve formation via angiocrine pathways.The emergence of high-throughput RNA-seq data has offered unprecedented opportunities for cancer diagnosis. However, capturing biological data with highly nonlinear and complex associations by most existing approaches for cancer diagnosis has been challenging. In this study, we propose a novel hierarchical feature selection and second learning probability error ensemble model (named HFS-SLPEE) for precision cancer diagnosis. Specifically, we first integrated protein-coding gene expression profiles, non-coding RNA expression profiles, and DNA methylation data to provide rich information; afterward, we designed a novel hierarchical feature selection method, which takes the CpG-gene biological associations into account and can select a compact set of superior features; next, we used four individual classifiers with significant differences and apparent complementary to build the heterogeneous classifiers; lastly, we developed a second learning probability error ensemble model called SLPEE to thoroughly learn the new data consisting of classifiers-predicted class probability values and the actual label, further realizing the self-correction of the diagnosis errors. Benchmarking comparisons on TCGA showed that HFS-SLPEE performs better than the state-of-the-art approaches.     Spermatogenesis involves coordinated processes, including meiosis, to produce functional gametes. We previously reported Topaz1 as a germ cell-specific gene highly conserved in vertebrates. Topaz1 knockout males are sterile with testes that lack haploid germ cells because of meiotic arrest after prophase I. To better characterize Topaz1 -/- testes, we used RNA-sequencing analyses at two different developmental stages (P16 and P18). The absence of TOPAZ1 disturbed the expression of genes involved in microtubule and/or cilium mobility, biological processes required for spermatogenesis. In this study, we propose a novel hierarchical feature selection and second learning probability error ensemble model (named HFS-SLPEE) for precision cancer diagnosis. Specifically, we first integrated protein-coding gene expression profiles, non-coding RNA expression profiles, and DNA methylation data to provide rich information; afterward, we designed a novel hierarchical feature selection method, which takes the CpG-gene biological associations into account and can select a compact set of superior features; next, we used four individual classifiers with significant differences and apparent complementary to build the heterogeneous classifiers; lastly, we developed a second learning probability error ensemble model called SLPEE to thoroughly learn the new data consisting of classifiers-predicted class probability values and the actual label, further realizing the self-correction of the diagnosis errors.   • AIMS This study aimed to evaluate in vitro efficacy of essential oils (EOs) and their compounds (EOCs) alone or in combination against Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida, the causative agent of furunculosis in salmonid fish. METHODS AND RESULTS Antimicrobial activity of 13 EOs and 16 EOCs was investigated for four A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida strains using broth microdilution. The checkerboard assay was used to evaluate a putative synergy between the most efficient EOs and EOCs against the tested strains. Cinnamon bark, oregano, clove, and thyme oils and their major compounds cinnamaldehyde, eugenol, carvacrol and thymol showed the lower minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration values. The association of cinnamaldehyde and eugenol (V/V 30%/70%) showed a synergistic activity against three tested strains. The combinations of cinnamon with oregano, clove or thyme EOs showed a neutral or additive activity against all the tested strains. CONCLUSIONS Cinnamon, oregano, clove and thyme oils and their major phytochemical compounds showed strong activities against A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida strains. Association between EZH2 with LINC00630 and BEX1 promoter was determined by RNA immunoprecipitation and chromatin immunoprecipitation. BEX1 and DNMT3B proteins were quantified by Western blot. We demonstrated the elevated LINC00630 correlated with radio-resistance and poorer prognosis in CRC. Knockdown of LINC00630 significantly improved the sensitivity of CRC cells to irradiation. Finally antibiotic susceptibility and acute oral toxicity of the strain in **** were investigated to check its safety status. The strain showed >99% similarity to Lactobacillus paracasei which was further confirmed by biochemical tests. It significantly inhibited pathogens in agar well diffusion assay. It showed tolerance to simulated gastric acid (pH 3), 0·3% bile salt and 10% NaCl. Significant hydrophobic, aggregation and anti-oxidizing activities were observed. No resistance to antibiotics tested was observed and no adverse effects during acute oral toxicity in **** were detected. CONCLUSIONS Lactobacillus paracasei ZFM 54, a new and safe Lactobacillus strain was identified with numerous probiotic-associated genes and characteristics confirmed by experimental studies. The MVNs are required to not only protect the healing agent for a sufficient period of time but also survive the mixing process, release the healing agent when the cementitious matrix is damaged, and have minimal impact on the physical and mechanical properties of the host cementitious matrix. A systematic study is described which fulfilled these design requirements and determined the most appropriate form and material for the MVNs. A subsequent series of experiments showed that MVNs filled with sodium silicate, embedded in concrete specimens, are able to respond effectively to damage, behave as a perfusable vascular system and thus act as healing agent reservoirs that are available for multiple damage-healing events. Using a sample of 500 African American middle aged smokers and non-smokers, we found that a) self-reported cigarette consumption was associated with accelerated intrinsic DNA methylation-based aging on some but not all DNA methylation-based aging indices, b) for those aging outcomes associated with self-reported cigarette consumption, DNA methylation-based indicators of smoking typically accounted for greater variance than did self-reported cigarette consumption, and c) self-reported cigarette consumption effects on DNA methylation-based aging indices typically were fully mediated by DNA methylation-based indicators of smoking (e.g., PACKYRS from GrimAge; or cg05575921 CpG site). A systematic study is described which fulfilled these design requirements and determined the most appropriate form and material for the MVNs. A subsequent series of experiments showed that MVNs filled with sodium silicate, embedded in concrete specimens, are able to respond effectively to damage, behave as a perfusable vascular system and thus act as healing agent reservoirs that are available for multiple damage-healing events.   • Finally, the amount of lifetime running exposure did not affect ankle kinetics during walking in middle-aged runners.PURPOSE To assess the effects of periodized versus nonperiodized dry-land strength training (DLST) on indices of swimming performance in well-trained adolescent swimmers. METHODS Sixteen athletes (10 boys and 6 girls; age 14.9 [1.1] y) performed similar endurance training for 16 weeks (29.1 [7.5] km·wk-1). During weeks 1 to 7, all athletes additionally performed 2 or 3 times weekly whole-body DLST (3 × 6-10 repetitions at 75-85% 1-repetition maximum [1RM]). Thereafter, the DLST frequency was maintained, but athletes were stratified into periodized (experimental, n = 9) and nonperiodized (control, n = 7) DLST groups. The experimental group performed maximal (3 × 3-4 repetitions at 85-90% 1RM) and explosive DLST (throws and unloaded jumps), while in the control group, DLST was maintained. RESULTS Swimming time at 4 mmol·L-1 of blood lactate improved after 7 weeks in both the experimental (+2.6% [1.8%], P = .033) and the control groups (+3.2% [2.4%], P = .081) and plateaued thereafter. Ten-meter start improved in both the experimental (-3.6% [2.5%], P = .039) and the control groups (-5.1% [2.2%], P = .054) throughout the entire intervention. The purpose of this study was to determine the supporting limb's ankle, knee, hip, and pelvis-trunk joint angle excursions and kinematic coordination strategies utilized during the pirouette's turn phase. The bioactive compounds and predictive targets of XLGB were collected from the traditional Chinese medicine systems pharmacology databases and analysis platform(TCMSP), the Encyclopeida of traditional Chinese medicine (ETCM), traditional Chinese medicine Databse@Taiwan, ChEMBL, STITCH, and SymMap database. The targets corresponding to OP were obtained by using Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man® (OMIM), GeneCards, the National Center for Biotechnology Information-Gene database. The XLGB-OP targets were obtained by intersecting with the targets of XLGB and OP. Protien-Protien interaciton (PPI) network was constructed using STRING online database and analyzed using Cytoscape 3.7.0 software to screen out hub genes. Gene ontology (GO) and KEGG enrichment analysis of the target in the PPI network was conducted using the ClusterProfiler package in R with adjusted p-value less then 0.05. A total of 65 XLGB bioactive compounds were screened corresponding to 776 XLGB targets and 2556 OP targets. The GO analysis and KEGG enrichment analyses suggested XLGB played a therapeutic roles in OP treatment via the interleukin-17 signaling pathway, hypoxia-inducible factor-1 signaling pathway, insulin resistance, Th-17 signaling pathway, etc. Five hub genes (AKT1, MAPK1, MAPK8, TP53, and STAT3) were screened using the degree algorithm, and molecular docking stimulation results showed that most bioactive compounds of XLGB had strong binding efficiency with hub genes. Overall, this study laid the foundation for further in vivo and in vitro experimental research and expanded the clinical applications of XLGB. METHODS We examined the manipulation ability of internal representations in WM using mental rotation (MR) tasks, and compared the task performances of euthymic bipolar I disorder patients to those of schizophrenia patients and healthy controls. In this study, 20 euthymic bipolar I disorder patients, 20 schizophrenia patients, and 38 healthy controls were recruited. People and letter MR tasks were employed to evaluate the ability of WM manipulation. RESULTS Compared to healthy controls, euthymic bipolar I disorder patients showed substantially higher error rates of people MR task and slower responses in both people and letter MR tasks. Schizophrenia patients showed no difference in error rate and response time in MR tasks compared to healthy controls; however, they showed significantly slower responses in people MR task compared to controls.

The bioactive compounds and predictive targets of XLGB were collected from the traditional Chinese medicine systems pharmacology databases and analysis platform(TCMSP), the Encyclopeida of traditional Chinese medicine (ETCM), traditional Chinese medicine Databse@Taiwan, ChEMBL, STITCH, and SymMap database. The targets corresponding to OP were obtained by using Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man® (OMIM), GeneCards, the National Center for Biotechnology Information-Gene database. The XLGB-OP targets were obtained by intersecting with the targets of XLGB and OP. Protien-Protien interaciton (PPI) network was constructed using STRING online database and analyzed using Cytoscape 3.7.0 software to screen out hub genes. Gene ontology (GO) and KEGG enrichment analysis of the target in the PPI network was conducted using the ClusterProfiler package in R with adjusted p-value less then 0.05. A total of 65 XLGB bioactive compounds were screened corresponding to 776 XLGB targets and 2556 OP targets. The GO analysis and KEGG enrichment analyses suggested XLGB played a therapeutic roles in OP treatment via the interleukin-17 signaling pathway, hypoxia-inducible factor-1 signaling pathway, insulin resistance, Th-17 signaling pathway, etc. Five hub genes (AKT1, MAPK1, MAPK8, TP53, and STAT3) were screened using the degree algorithm, and molecular docking stimulation results showed that most bioactive compounds of XLGB had strong binding efficiency with hub genes. Overall, this study laid the foundation for further in vivo and in vitro experimental research and expanded the clinical applications of XLGB. METHODS We examined the manipulation ability of internal representations in WM using mental rotation (MR) tasks, and compared the task performances of euthymic bipolar I disorder patients to those of schizophrenia patients and healthy controls. In this study, 20 euthymic bipolar I disorder patients, 20 schizophrenia patients, and 38 healthy controls were recruited. People and letter MR tasks were employed to evaluate the ability of WM manipulation. RESULTS Compared to healthy controls, euthymic bipolar I disorder patients showed substantially higher error rates of people MR task and slower responses in both people and letter MR tasks. Schizophrenia patients showed no difference in error rate and response time in MR tasks compared to healthy controls; however, they showed significantly slower responses in people MR task compared to controls.

A questionnaire was applied with questions regarding participants' general knowledge on headache, neurological approach, demographic profile, and workplace profile. RESULTS 159 physicians answered the questionnaire. The professionals' profile corresponded to recently graduated individuals (mean of 6.31 years). Knowledge about headache management was regular. Those who do not have any specialization or are not majoring a specialization were statistically significantly more confident in neurological patients care (p=0.006). Only 18.24% reported access to Magnetic Resonance Imaging and 35.85% had no access to any type of neuroimaging. CONCLUSIONS General practice physicians often do not feel confident when performing neurological exams, demonstrating low knowledge about the topic. The profile of professionals working in these departments is predominantly of newly graduates, which may affect in some way on care quality. CONCLUSIONS VEGFA and CXCL8 are important factors for angiogenesis, which are suggested to have significant roles during tumorigenesis. Our results provide further evidence that VEGFA and CXCL8 could induce angiogenesis and promote LGG to progress into GBM. These findings could be useful in developing novel targeted therapeutics approaches in the future.OBJECTIVE To investigate the feasibility of a Brazilian samba protocol in individuals with Parkinson's disease. METHODS Twenty participants, mean age of 66.4±10.7 years, diagnosed with idiopathic Parkinson 's disease, divided into experimental group that received the intervention of Brazilian samba dance classes (10 individuals); and control group that maintained their routine activities (10 individuals). For data collection, a divided questionnaire was used General Information; Disability stages scale; Balance and Quality of Life. RESULTS During class implementation, there were no falls, as all dance activities adhered to the details of the protocol steps without any changes. On average, patients completed 82.7% of activities. After 12 weeks, the experimental group had improvements in the UPDRS global score, in daily activities, and on motor examination. There was also improvement in balance scores and in the mobility domain of the quality of life in the experimental group. CONCLUSION The samba protocol seems to be feasible and safe for patients with PD.

  • Anaphylactic cardiovascular events constitute an underrated cause of medical emergencies in hospitalized patients. Coronary arteries and myocardium are targeted by anaphylactic mediators leading to acute coronary syndrome and imminent cardiovascular collapse. Notably, Kounis anaphylaxis-associated acute coronary syndrome is a rare cause of ST segment elevation myocardial infarction with normal or diseased coronary arteries. We recommend that Kounis syndrome and its variants should be taken into consideration in the differential diagnosis of ischemic heart disease in patients with signs of allergic reaction and/or medical history of previous allergic reactions, who experience acute coronary syndrome after exposure to certain environmental stimuli.Two patients with post-coma reactivation deficiency who showed a "dramatic" response to rotigotine therapy are described. They had suffered from prolonged coma due to lesions in the mesencephalic ventral tegmental area. The authors believe that rotigotine effect in these cases could be due to restoration of dopaminergic transmission in medial frontal areas previously "de-afferented" from the lesions. Some comatous patients may experience a prolonged difficulty in recovering a normal state of consciousness. This phenomenon may be due to dysfunction of amynergic activating pathways connecting brainstem to the frontal cerebral cortex. In particular, dysfunction of dopaminergic pathways from the mesencephalon to the frontal cortical areas may be responsible for clinical pictures characterized by preserved alertness and total loss of interactions with the surrounding environment; the so called "waking coma" cases.SJS is a rare mucocutaneous syndrome characterized by skin and mucous detachment. The main etiological factors are drugs and infections; sometimes the cause remains unknown. In the prodromal phase we observed non-specific symptoms, followed by mucocutaneous manifestation. Due to risk of complications and mortality a multidisciplinary approach is needed.  We present a case of a girl with an atypical presentation of SJS related to Enterovirus.Neuroma, also known as traumatic neuroma or amputation neuroma or stump neuroma, is a focal non neoplastic area of proliferative hyperplastic reaction secondary to peripheral nerve damage that commonly occurs after a focal trauma (acute or chronic) or surgery, such as amputation or partial transection. Neuromas are more commonly located in the lower limbs, followed by head and neck; other extremely rare sites include the ulnar nerve followed by the radial nerve and the brachial plexus. A radiologic plan is necessary to recognize soft tissue lesions with a neural origin and whether they are a true tumor or a pseudotumor such as a neuroma, fibrolipoma, or peripheral nerve sheath ganglion. In oncologic patients the appearance of post-surgical neuromas can produce problems in differential diagnosis with local recurrences. Therefore, with a combination of different imaging techniques, mainly ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), it is possible to characterize neurogenic tumours safely, with a great impact on patient management and to plan an appropriate treatment. Here, we report the first case of post-amputation neuroma of radial nerve in a patient with clinical history of ephitelioid sarcoma with a short literature review.We focus our attention on the use of lithographed lecture notes written by professors, or more often by students, in the teaching of medicine and surgery courses, between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a period in which, to better understand the phenomena underlying life and death, collaboration between medical professionals and natural science researchers was intense (1). In particular, we analyzed the lithographed lecture notes of Professor Paolo Pellacani at the University of Pavia for the course of legal medicine.In our paper we report a brief history of the X-rays discovery and discuss the implications of their use and abuse in the Italian pedriatic schools of the early 20th century. Indeed, history of the X-ray treatment in the Italian Pediatric School has not yet been well studied. Even if the scientific experience of many physicians is well known in literature, a summary was missing. In Italy, in 1900, exposure to Röntgenand ultraviolet radiation or to large amounts of solar rays was a widespread medical practice, especially in several pediatric schools. During those years, diagnosis and treatment of childhood pathologies underwent considerable changes, especially after the twenties, when scientists developed an unquestionable trust in the therapeutic properties of radiation, considered harmless at that time. We report the main steps of the scientific research of the early 20th century in Italy.BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE WORK Few know that Lombroso was also involved in epidemiological research. In particular, Lombroso's scientific reflections on Medical Geography were addressed to the theme of climate influences and meteorological conditions on human conduct. The authors analyze the scientific production and the works of Lombroso devoted to medical geography. DISCUSSION Lombroso carried out accurate epidemiological investigations using the statistical method with great modernity, combining health data with geographical and climatic data to demonstrate the relationship between man, the environment and health in a social vision of preventive and curative medicine. CONCLUSIONS The theory of Cosmotellurism in Lombroso's work is not only a source of unquestionable interest in the History of Medicine. The heritage of Medical Geography within the pre-bacteriological medical culture can continue with its teachings to correctly address the clinician's thinking even in the current historical context in which endemic and epidemic pathologies re-emerge in various parts of the world.

In conclusion, a certificated gluten-free bread with improved nutritional and physicochemical properties and good sensorial profile was obtained.As a result of rapid urbanization and urban sprawl, natural ecosystems are shrinking or are fragmented, affecting people's health and quality of life. Modern people prefer to live in large cities rather than rural areas because of greater convenience and more comfortable living conditions. As a consequence, people are suffering from many psycho-physiological health problems and have a longing for natural environments to escape the concrete jungle. Forest therapy has emerged as a preventive and alternative therapy to cope with stress and enhance people's health and wellbeing as a result of spending time in a green and healthy environment. Here, we review the activities related to forest therapy in China and discuss the commonalities and differences between the forest therapy types. Furthermore, we summarize the current achievements of forest therapy in basic research and the development of the forest therapy industry. Nor can the method detect deep and/or small vessels. Multispectral optoacoustic tomography (MSOT), a real-time three- dimensional (3D) imaging modality which allows exact spatial identification of absorbers in tissue such as blood and injected dyes can overcome these hurdles. However, MSOT with a handheld probe has not been performed yet in lymphedema patients. We conducted a pilot study in 11 patients with primary and secondary lymphedema to test whether lymphatic vessels could be detected with a handheld MSOT device. In eight patients, we could not only identify lymphatics and veins but also visualize their position and contractility. Furthermore, deep lymphatic vessels not traceable by ICG lymphography and lymphatics covered by severe dermal backflow, could be clearly identified by MSOT. In three patients, two of which had advanced stage lymphedema, only veins but no lymphatic vessels could be identified. We found that MSOT can identify and image lymphatics and veins in real-time and beyond the limits of near-infrared technology during a single bedside examination. Given its easy use and high accuracy, the handheld MSOT device is a promising tool in lymphatic surgery.In this study, a novel magnetorheological (MR) polishing device under a compound magnetic field is designed to achieve microlevel polishing of the titanium tubes. The polishing process is realized by combining the rotation motion of the tube and the reciprocating linear motion of the polishing head. Two types of excitation equipment for generating an appropriate compound magnetic field are outlined. A series of experiments are conducted to systematically investigate the effect of compound magnetic field strength, rotation speed, and type and concentration of abrasive particles on the polishing performance delivered by the designed device. The experiments were carried out through controlling variables. Before and after the experiment, the surface roughness in the polished area of the workpiece is measured, and the influence of the independent variable on the polishing effect is judged by a changing rule of surface roughness so as to obtain a better parameter about compound magnetic field strength, concentration of abrasive particles, etc. It is shown from experimental results that diamond abrasive particles are appropriate for fine finishing the internal surface of the titanium-alloy tube. It is also identified that the polishing performance is excellent at high magnetic field strength, fast rotation speed, and high abrasive-particle concentration.There is an increasing need for non-destructive, low-cost devices for real-time fluid viscosity monitoring. Therefore, in this study, a method based on structural health monitoring is adapted for monitoring fluid properties. A device is built such that an inexpensive and disposable viscosity probe be possible. The design incorporates a sensor/actuator pair using a piezoelectric material layered with copper/brass and capable of monitoring viscosity changes in low volume liquids (e.g., vacutainer vial). Experiments performed with the new device show a definite pattern of wave propagation in viscous solutions. A numerical model is built to investigate the wave propagation in the fluid. For experimental measurements, the sensor part of the device detects the generated pressure wave in fluid (e.g., air, water, glycerin) by the actuator part. The phase shift between the actuator and the sensor signals is then recorded and plotted for different concentrations of glycerin and water at room temperature. The results of this study show a direct correlation between the phase shift and varying viscosity in the ultrasonic frequency range from 6 to 9 MHz. The numerical simulation, performed utilizing acoustic modal and harmonic response analysis, results also demonstrate the same trend as the experimental results a phase shift increases with the viscosity of the fluid.The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of Spirulina platensis, formulation containing microalgal extract, post-extraction residue, and formulation without algal extract (containing only emulsifier) on the content of FAs in the eggs of laying hens. The experiment was conducted on 90 laying hens (ISA Brown) as a completely randomized design. Hens were assigned to five experimental groups (six replicates). The FAs content in eggs was determined after 30, 60, 90, and 120 days of the experiment. There were no statistically significant differences in FA profiles after 30 days of the experiment. It was shown that after 60, 90, and 120 days of the experiment, the investigated additives had a significant impact on the content of such acids as dodecanoic acid (C120), C150, nonadecanoic acid (C190), myristoleic acid (C141 n-5), α-linolenic acid (ALA, C183 n-3), DPA, C202 n-6, and decosahexaenoic acid (DHA C226 n-6). There were also significant differences in total PUFA n-3, PUFA n-6, and n-6/n-3 ratio in eggs. The obtained results suggest that the use of algae extract and emulsifier in laying hens nutrition has the greatest impact on the FA profile in the eggs.
